RIght, so, sorry about the delay. Dad's in the hospital- nothing major, something in his lower GI I think they said, got him on antibiotics right now. Hopefully he's not causing too much of a ruckus, haha. We'd have started on time but for traffic throwing my dinner schedule all off... oh well. sorry.

At least the weather today is markedly better than yesterday you think, looking out the hangar doors to the runway beyond. It's not raining and it's only partly overcast- a welcome change of pace for the region, you're told. You tell yourself you'll take the chance to enjoy it when you get back- this flight should only last an hour or two, less if the fight doesn't drag. Of course, after yesterday, it might.

At Slider's request, you left Ice alone- and she pointedly avoided you, and has been this morning too. Slider said they talked, of course, and this would blow over, but you're not sure what you should be doing, let alone if you really should be putting in for a transfer out or not. You're reasonably sure you could get a posting to VF-2 or maybe VF-10, both of which are mixed units.

Of course, you haven't given serious thought to it, partly because you don't really want to try to work with a new unit- new commanders, new wingmates, the lot of it, partly because you're not sure you can. Other mixed units have taken losses, true, but you've been given the impression you're locked in to your current posting, like it or not. Besides, the other witches- Slider, especially, though Katya and Mav as well, have all made it clear that no one wants either of you to leave.

1/2
>>
That's part of the reason, you tell yourself as you climb up into the Wyvern's cockpit, that you're not actually worried about yesterday's little spat. It happens, and she really is babying you too hard- you're a combat aviator, dammit, a fighter pilot! This shit is what you do! And you'd have thought, by now, that, Tanana notwithstanding, you've proven yourself to be damn good at it. She's overreacting, that's all, and she'll come around like the rest of them have.

You shoot a glance over to the striker racks in time to catch her looking your way. She hurriedly looks away, busying herself with her equipment checks and the striker's startup checklist on her wrist MFD. Somehow, that almost makes you feel better- she looked away because she's embarrassed at what she did, not because she's mad at you. At least, that's what Slider's saying. Maybe you'll have to talk with her when you get on the ground.

“Nice day, isn't it?” Merlin asks- as usual, her stutter gone and her voice carrying a lot more confidence in the aircraft than it does outside it.

[] “Yeah. Shame we'll be down south. Any reason the Italians wanted us to use their Mediterranean ranges?”
[] “Yeah. Think Katya will forgive us for spending it flying against her instead of on the beach?”

[x] “Yeah. Shame we'll be down south. Any reason the Italians wanted us to use their Mediterranean ranges?”

You nod, reaching around to thread your vest through to the straps on your ejection seat. “Yeah, shame we'll be down south though. Any reason the Italians wanted us to use their Mediterranean ranges?”

“I think they wanted to host, and are still kind of unhappy it went to Barin and the RAF.” Merlin responds. “Hang on, going to intercom.”

You shrug, plugging in your helmet's umbilical to the outlet on the side of the seat. Merlin's voice greets you a second later.

“Check?”

“Yeah, I got you.” You say, settling your left hand on the throttles and the toggles there for your radios. “So they wanted to host?”

“Yeah, but it was too close to the front when this came down.” She says. “So here we are. I'm not sure I would have minded though, they're supposed to have really nice beaches down there.”

“That they do.” You answer. “But this still seems like an incredible pain in the ass.” You wave through the still open canopy at Powers, taxiing past, her camera pack slung.

“Well, we'll have tankers and a French AWACS.” Merlin says. “So it shouldn't be too bad. Plus it's over the Mediterranean, so there's no mountains to worry about.”

“We had at least a hundred feet of clearance between us and the tops of those peaks.” You respond. “Plenty of room.” She still hasn't quite forgiven you for getting as close as you did to the terrain yesterday.

“Of course.” She says, not sounding totally convinced. “I'm buttoning us up.”

The canopy retracts with the muted whine of it's servos, the one-way composite material slightly dimming the light streaming in from outside.

“So what do we know about this girl?” You ask- you're well aware of her abilities, of course, but it's good to make sure Merlin is too, since she's in charge of finding her and the better part of your defensive suite.

“She's fast.” She answers, simply. “Claims to have pushed mach three in her starfighters before, but they're not rated to go that fast, maybe in the mid two range. If she did, she probably wrecked her strikers doing it.”

“But if it's true, we can't disengage with speed.” You say. “So we'll have to think something else up. Ready to start 'em?”

“Yeah. Number one's coming up now.” Merlin sounds slightly distracted, your number one turbine spooling up with it's rising whine, the number two starting shortly after. “Ok, we're all green.”

“Anything else about her?” You ask.

“Nothing major. She's a combat vet, of course, but she hasn't got the same time up on the front as Young has. Favors a Machine gun, so that could be a problem. Her mom fought in the war, was stationed here at Barin, but speed isn't their family talent. Ice said she studied with Charlotte Yeager.”

“No shit? Well, that'd explain speed, anyway.” You respond. “Well, the MG could be interesting, but we can counter it. Let's go.” You let off the brakes, the wyvern rolling forward- you'll be airborne first, since you'll have to tank probably twice in flight, while the witches will just stretch. Worst case, most of them have planned alternates in France.

The weather over the range complex is supposed to be clear and a million, so you won't be sensor dependent, but at the same time, neither will she. With her speed, she can pin you in an engagement, but if she's not as good as young, she might not know enough to, or you might still be able to handle her if she tries. There's an energy advantage in going in high, then- it could give you the speed you need for an early pass or to at least adjust from a bad situation, but going in low could mean you get the drop on her.

[] Go in high- the extra energy should counteract if we get spotted first-hand
[] go in low- you can't terrain mask, but she probably won't expect you down there.

Some tips on fighting the steelwing F-104 Starfighter, which may carry over.

>The F-104 is fast as anything.
>Optimum performance at mach 1.4
>It has a wide turning radius due to speed
>It doesn't like going slow, and can easily be turnfighted.
>Its bounce is a good one, staying close to the ground will minimize angles she can attack from due to potentially hitting the ground
>It can fly smoothly above the ground when going FAST.
>It doesn't like going slow at all. Try and bait it into slowing down, but we must wait for the right time.
>It can easily go into a spin if the angle of attack is too high.

That's one way. Turning inside her turn would work too. You start turning one way and get her to start to follow, before cutting back around. This is looking to force overshoots.
In general, lead her on, let her get greedy, and bait her to slow down, before using our maneuverability to get behind it, but we're talking about witches, not planes, so that might not work as well.

[x] go in low- you can't terrain mask, but she probably won't expect you down there.

The french, perhaps somewhat for show, have generously cleared you at all altitudes for all flight regimes over the southern beaches- they want you to show off for tourists, you think.

Not that you're not happy to oblige. Pulling away from your last tanker hit, you dive, Topping out at a few thousand feet above the ground below- this part of the alps fortunately not nearly as large as the more central part, but a mountain is still a mountain, and a hell of a lot more sturdy than even your fighter.

Still, you cross feet wet above the sun-soaked beaches of nice at a mere fifteen hundred feet up, closing in on mach, your fighter's wings pivoting in and her tails streamlining down for high speed flight.

“Giving the tourists a show, Frank?” Merlin asks, placidly.

“Well, you never know when there's going to be a gorgeous movie starlet down there who wants to meet the pilot that just knocked her off her feet.” You respond, laughing.

“Literally, probably.” Merlin says, somewhat dryly. “Range to target is two hundred miles. At this speed we'll be there in a few minutes.”

You cross into the range complex with a greeting from the Italian AWACS- one of the Avro Shackeltons they bought from the UK's boneyards when the war started. Hurriedly refurbished and equipped with Napier Nomads, you've never worked with them, but the Italians are getting a bit of a mixed reputation. They fight well enough, but they're hot headed and somewhat disorganized. Remembering the hot-headed part you elect to not start calling the AWACS controller 'mario'- you can't see it going over well.

“Alright, we're in the range.” Merlin says, flipping over your computers to training mode and establishing an uplink with the twins and the spellcaster chase witches in the area. “Should I turn on the set? I don't think she'll be able to detect it, but I'm not sure.”

[x] Yeah, fire up the suite, see how fast we can find her.

“Yeah, fire it up.” you order, swiveling your head around- you're not sure how much the starfighter striker takes from it's steelwing counterpart, but the F-104 wasn't exactly noted for it's low altitude, low speed dog fighting capability, being more of a dedicated high speed interceptor than anything else.

The powerful sensor suite starts to overlay it's picture with your helmet mounted display- the target markers of friendly or non-target items flashing up in the airspace over the witches and, further out, the Shackleton AWACS.

“No joy, where is she?” You ask, half to your self, looking around- hoping merlin's sensor will paint her before she shows up.

Unfortunately, it doesn't.

1/2
>>
She comes in from your twelve o'clock, in a shallow dive, her weapon held out in front of her, her strikers kicking up huge plumes of water behind her as she cuts in.

“Closure rate is twenty five hundred knots!” Merlin calls out, far more calmly than she should feel, announcing a closure rate of over mach three- and climbing. You only briefly get a look at the witch as she whips past your fighter's right wing, her weapon flashing a few rounds into Merlin's shield as she flies past.

You slam the fighter into a brutal turn, grunting as the G force pushes you back into the all too thin padding of your ejection seat.

Gabriella has mirrored you, banking hard to her own right- flashing past in a pair of flat scissors at speed approaching mach two- you're having to fight ground effect to keep the fighter in the air.

You wait for the scissors to close before kicking in rudder and using the thrust vectoring nozzles to skid your fighter sideways, lighting off a cannon burst at the witch- impacting nothing but shield.

You see her eyes go wide as you do so, and she swings her legs around- before disappearing in a cloud of superheated steam as her afterburners scream to life, flash boiling a few hundred pounds of seawater in an eyebling and she rockets skyward, Clawing for altitude. Good the wyvern may be, but it'll never match a pair of F-104S strikers in a climbing race- though you could easily force her out of it, you think.

[] Stay on her- she's panicking in a dogfight, trying to separate and re-engage.

It is explicitly stated repeatedly in the thread, the quest overall, and in the lore (for lack of a better term) that there is no such thing as a jet that can outclimb a Striker. We can climb higher, yeah, and last longer at higher altitude, yeah, but climb faster? Hell no. Never.
>>
>>32112300
Anon, a missile that would be going 3000 knots at high altitude would barely get to 2000 knots at ground level from air resistance if going straight down. She's overpowered.
>>
[x] I'm not going vertical with a witch, let's keep it down here. Hell, we could even make a shark joke.

You open your throttles- climbing enough that you're not having to battle with ground effect. She wants to climb out, you think, that's fine. Let her. Meanwhile, you can get horizontal separation and maybe get her on the next pass- she seems to be favoring energy tactics, though you'd heard young did too, and she proved to be more than capable as a knife fighter.

While you'd dearly love to make a shark joke, channeling your inner twins results in nothing. You do, however, briefly hum the theme to jaws over an open channel.

“She's coming back down, Frank.” Merlin warns, craned around. “She's a few miles back though.”

“Impatient, isn't she?” You respond quietly, making a wide, sweeping turn to the left, going head-to-head with the witch again, as her striker's vapor trail curls around in a vortex behind her while she descends, her speed building, along with your collective closure rate.

The two of you pass closely again- though you note she's still got her afterburners wide open as she flashes past, her LMG still hanging by it's sling.

“Stay on her Merlin!” you order, slamming the fighter around again, opening your jets all the way back up.

She begins her own turn as you come around, twisting around her waist as she does so, her MG coming up to track. Merlin's shield flashes to life briefly, though no shots were fired- precautionary on her part, though seconds later, she does fire.

1/2
>>
Forced defensive, you roll away, the computer generated tracers passing down your left side as you cross over the top of the witch. Merlin's shields light again, though totally unnecessarily.

“She's closing back into gun range!” Merlin calls from behind you. “Break right!”

You respond without a word, hauling the fighter into a hard right hand turn, chopping the throttle back in an attempt to make her overshoot.

At these speeds, her reaction time, even amped up by magic, isn't up to par, and she overshoots as you slam the fighter back, gaining her tail. Your afterburners roar, as if in challenge to hers. She rolls around, spraying fire at you, her LMG laid down the length of her body, the muzzle terminating just above where her knee should be, the ejected brass twinkling in the light as it drops away from her the few hundred feet down to the surface of the ocean.

“Damnit! Can't get a shot!” You curse, trying for a shot- the hail of lead is preventing you from getting gunsights on her, and while an agile shot would do the job, you don't have any 'loaded'- the matrons specified guns only.

“We could try my sheild.” Merlin says. “But you'd have to be fast. Or she'll have to reload soon, but she could reverse on us if we wait too long.”

[] Trust Merlin- she's never let you down before.
[] We'll wait for a reload- she's burning ammo too fast to keep this up.

Not if you have any roll. Then your wingtip vortices are unbounded on one side, and interrupted on the other, which makes for both weird handling (though that /should/ be on a stable node) and center-of-pressure changes. Basically, plane does not respond like it usually is expected to, and acrobatic training at low altitude is a big no no. See CFIT: 25% of aircraft losses.

[x] Trust Merlin- she's never let you down before.

“Shields up number one.” you order in your best Jean-luc Picard impression, pulling the fighter up as they flash to life in front of you and the witch, understanding what's coming, starts skipping around the sky, trying to keep your gunsight off her.

“Damnit!” You curse again as a few of her rounds impact the shield in front of you, while your own cannons only register one hit on hers- an even trade, nearabouts. “Merlin! Wait, where's she goin?”

The witch twists away, and you watch the canister-like magazine fall away from her weapon as a bay pops open on her left hand striker, a magazine waiting inside.

Merlin's shield dissipates as you redouble your attack, slashing in and sending a longer burst her way- again, her shield intercepts it, though she's forced to use both hands to control her weapon as she jinks away from your guns, her reload momentarily forgotten. She kicks sideways, one of those almost ninety degree direction changes witches are so famous for- though you know that most of them hate to do that, especially at speeds like this, because of how hard it is to do it, and how hard on them it is.

“Frank-” Merlin says, her voice carrying a note of warning that instantly causes you to take notice “She's- “

You see her level out and her afterburners flash to life again, Her insane acceleration pushing her beyond gun range in an eyeblink.

You're astonished when Merlin- Merlin! Calls out on an a general frequency- “Knock it off! Knock it off!”- a general call by any aircraft in the exercise commanding all of them to reduce speed and roll wings-level. It's reserved entirely for emergencies- like near misses or catastrophic equipment failure. And you see why she did it.

Gabriella's portside striker is trailing smoke.

She notices it a split second before it goes, jettisoning both units. Their magical energy suddenly cut off, the starboard striker sputters out. The portside unit, though cuts a split second too late, exploding behind the witch. Her shield eats most of it, and her velocity carries her away from the worst of the rest.

“Mayday mayday mayday. One witch in the drink.” you call, throttling back and circling lower. “Shit, Merlin, what's her name anyway? Zucchini?”

“Lu- maybe I'd better work relay.” Merlin responds. “You just focus on keeping her in sight.”

You're relieved when she waves as you wing past- she deployed a massive shield before impacting the water, decelerating to more human levels.

“Alright, there's an Italian jolly green on the way.” Merlin says over the intercom, a minute later. “They're asking us to keep her in sight till they get here.”

“how are we fixed on fuel?” You ask, throwing the fighter into a broad left turn.

“We're fine for now.” She responds. “We'll have to tank on the way back to Barin.”

“no problem. What about the rest of them.”

“Your call.” Merlin says. “We could fly back alone, no problem, and if they stay they might have to land in France to overnight there. But they might want to wait around to see if Lucchini is ok.”

[x] I don't care if they stay or not, France doesn't seem like a bad place to overnight.

“I don't care if they stay or not, France doesn't seem like a bad place to overnight.” You respond, maintaining a broad racetrack pattern. “Go ahead and relay that she's ok and responsive, she waved.”

“Her rescue beacon is up too.” Merlin says, sounding slightly relieved. “Wonder what happened?”

“You'll have to ask.” you tell her, nodding to Maverick, who forms up on your wing.

“This seems familiar.” She quips.

“Only slightly. I don't have a hole in my fighter this time.” You observe.

“So you really are improving!” She says, laughing. “Well, she's just as cute, too. Good job, you get all the cute ones we-”

“Not in front of Merlin, thank you.” You bark, overriding her transmission. “Besides, not too sure I'd be into Italians.”

“Oh come on, Frank. Pasta and pizza and they're catholic, you know what that means. Biiiig families.”

“I'll pass, thanks.” you say, somewhat dryly.

“I'm sure she's heartbroken.” Mav responds, still laughing.

The Italian jolly green fishes the witch out of the drink quickly enough, the big chopper thudding north towards the French coast.

“They're not taking her back?” You ask, surprised.

“Fuel, probably.” Merlin says. “Plus she's headed back to barin with us either way. I wonder if they'll want a rematch?”

“Probably.” you're suddenly less happy than you were. “Oh well. They can wait, I bet none of the other matrons want to let them get one right away.”

“Right.” Merlin says. “Ok, we're headed for Salon de-province air base, take heading three three zero, I'll set up our transponders. It's an ADA training base, north of Marseille.”

You gently turn your fighter onto it's heading, looking at the fuel levels. “We good to make it?”

“We'll be fine, yeah.” Merlin says. “I'm talking to Ice now, she says they're flying the SEALs down and Kenji's coming!”

“How long do we think we're staying?” You ask, twisting your head around to look back at the formation above you- Goose has joined on Mav, but no one else has.

“Just overnight, but the SEALs have to be there, and Kenji's in charge of our ground crew, so he's got to come down.”

“I'm sure.” you say, trying to keep the sarcasm out of your voice- Merlin deserves better.

You overfly the beaches again- this time higher up, and have to rely on Rosalie to translate, but you eventually land ok, along with the pair of Hawks and Powers, the first four down. “welcome to France, Merlin.” you say as your wheels kiss the ground.

“One of us has to stay with the plane before Brigette gets here.” She responds.

“I figured as much.” You say, wheeling into an empty hangar, following the marshal on the ground. He directs you to shut down the fighter, as you watch the witches dismounting their strikers on portable stands.

Popping the canopy open, you're greeted by warm, humid air and the scent of jet fuel- and Konstantina's voice.

“That was amazing my love! Truly, she was struggling so hard to defeat you, she destroyed her own equipment!” She says, beaming up at you as she unlocks the ladder from the nose. “But tell me, darling, I have never felt that pressured by you, have I been unworthy of your full attention?”

Well, there went the hope this would be an enjoyable break.

Anyway, Sorry for starting late- the old man's in the hospital (not, thankfully, for anything major, though he's making everyone in there below the rank of Colonel hate life right now. Grumpy old cuss), we'd have been on time but for that.

Sure why not

-

I'm Lieutenant Rachel “Slider” Kerner, and the guy I kinda sorta like just made my best friend cry. I am understandably mad at him.

In his defense, this isn't the first time he's done this to her—but this is the first time when the asshole did it on purpose. I am starting to believe that might actually be his special talent, y'know? “Making Women Who Are Concerned For His Safety Cry Their Eyes Out.” Patty suggested it, and at first we all laughed, but maybe she's the most observant of us all. Kind of a long name for it but it is what it is, and it is what he's done a few times now.

Tanana, I think, was the worst. I've never seen Tabby so upset about anything, and I've known her like... forever, by my reckoning. Little Miss Cross-Knot has always been a bit of a perfectionist; she hated screwing up in the academy, but after Tanana... Goddamnit.

I don't think any of us are over it; we've all compartmentalized it in some way. If Tabby flat out didn't exist in the world, I think it'd be a toss-up between Patty and Katya for the “Witch Most Affected By The Sacrifice of Frank Bishop” award. I was pretty bad off too, but Ice...

Well, she never really got over it. Worse so than the rest of us.

That's the whole problem isn't it?
>>
>>32114543

Thanks anon, glad to hear it. And thanks again- I mean, I'm kinda mad cos i think this will make his medical records longer than mine (again, the cheating fuck) but at this point I'm happy it's not major, cos that's always the fear with my family.

We're witches. We do things that steelwings normally can't. We don't look at Frank Bishop doing the impossible and coming home to drop into a coma and think 'Oh wow that is the most awesome shit ever,' we think 'Oh God our pilot is dying!' Because he is! He keeps trying to play this like it's not a big deal but it is! I know he does his “I'm a pilot derp derp” act because he doesn't want us to worry, but we can't help it. I can't help it. I really, really can't help it, and Tabby's... Tabby is way worse off than I am.

"You were with him, right? He's not hurt is he?"

The Kraut witch that Frank TOTALLY FUCKING SMOKED is trying to get my attention. Hauptmann Young getting beat like a dishrag is some of the craziest, hottest flying I've seen our loveable dunce of an aviator pull off. I don't have a clue how Frank does it, but he's... got this way with steelwings. Nobody flies like he does. The Reds have got that cute little super fighter of theirs and Stalinka was pretty crazy when we first ran into her, but they ain't got shit on our Frank Bishop. Young talked a good game, but...

You know when you see someone decide to win a fight or a game after they've been losing? I saw it happen again with Frank today. He did it over Japan, over Berlin, and he did it again against one of the most skilled witches in service today. He just decided to win, so he did.

Yeah, he was bleeding out of his nose and looked ready to keel over. Tabby was worked up into a panic and almost picked a fight with a SpecOps witch over it and I think my heart actually did stop when I watched him turn on the juice, but he won. He's alive, and that's what counts. Right?

I think Ms. Young here is as impressed and frightened by how he did it as we all are, but she's not gonna let it show. I've seen that act before. Hell, I'm in the middle of it myself. She's gonna be a sour Kraut for a while, but she won't mind it all that much after a bit. Frank's kinda got that way about him.
>>
>>32114730
I want to use 'sour Kraut' in an actual conversation some time.

"Yeah, I was with him." I try to be a little respectful. Young here's got a list of kills longer than I am tall, tail included. Not for lack of effort on my part mind you, but Young's got pedigree and skill to boot. "He's tired, but fine."

"I owe smalltime a drink. And he owes me an explanation."

"Smalltime?" I have to fight the urge to comment on what I've seen in the showers at Miramar, so I grin like a idiot at her.

"Oh hoooo~, not so smalltime, I see?" She's remarkably perceptive. Goddamnit.

"Obviously not. He did win, didn't he?" My grin grows larger. She grumbles something in German at me. "You can go drag him to the lounge or whatever; just promise me you won't do anything retarded with him." I don my 'Slider Is Serious' mask for this next bit. "He's probably worse off than he's letting on. If he doesn't look well, let him rest."

Young looks at me like I'm not serious at first, but after my hand grips onto her shoulder tight enough for her to wince, I think she gets the point.

"I understand." She brushes my hand aside. "Smalltime- Bishop's pretty lucky, I guess. His whole squadron fawns over him like you do?"

"Wait till you meet Litvyak."

She says something in German again. The glare I shoot her convinces her to translate without me asking. "I said 'You're all holding him back,'" she explains. "I saw your commander's reaction to seeing him after our little dance. You can't baby talent like his. You would do better trying to help him and understand how he does what he does. More importantly, why he does it."

Okay. This *bitch*...

... is absolutely right. I'm still mad at her—she doesn't have a clue what it's like to see Frank do this to himself from our perspective—but she's right.
>>
>>32114777
"You should be grateful to fly alongside someone like that. None of the steelwing pilots I have fought has given me as much to think about." Young looks almost sad all the sudden. "There are a lot of good men and women who could benefit from what we learn here."

"I think we'd prefer it if it didn't come at the cost of him."

"Let's hope it can be that easy." Young brushes past me and all but kicks the door to the medical shop open. I can hear her call Frank smalltime again, and it kinda pisses me off. I know she's doing it on purpose. He absolutely is not smalltime!

-

So I guess I should really start admitting this to myself more often, because it's true: I'm a... fan of Frank Bishop. I mean, I don't think I'm the right girl for him, a-and I don't know what I'd even do if his cutely awkward flirting was genuine but-

No. It's not even worth thinking about.

Happens more often these days, though.

The point is, my best friend is upset, Bishop is responsible for it, and I'm actually mad at the both of them. I'd been hoping they used their recent 'vacation' together as a chance to finally work out their personal issues. Maybe bond with each other—Tabby's all but prayed for a chance to be alone with him and to let him know how much she cares for him.

In bed. Horizontally and repeatedly. Maybe not in bed, maybe involving creative use of rope. I dunno, But I've seen the books she reads.

So has Frank. That's my fault, actually, eheh.

I really *don't* want to have this chat with Tabby. I'm starving, and I told Frank I was gonna grab chow, and I even kinda suggested that maybe I wouldn't mind the company but hey it's his bag if he wants to wrap a German witch around his-

No, he's not going to be doing that. Not on purpose. He's dumber than bricks when it comes to that sort of thing.
>>
>>32114824
As I stand in front of the door to Tabby's room, I can feel myself getting more upset. Young's absolutely right. We don't understand a thing about Frank's talents beyond a basic grasp of how pilots operate jets. Frank is absolutely right. We're too worried about him. Too protective. I mean, it's in his job description to be in danger! It's in his *nature* to take risks, to be protective of us-

Oh.

We're kinda not alright in the head, are we?

My hand's on the door now. I'm starting to open it.

I'll try my best Frank, but I don't think she's going to understand. Because she's more afraid than I am that one day, you'll fly your heart out—literally. That you'll be gone forever and you'll take Merlin with you. And...

-

And I walk inside the room. Tabby's lying on her bed, staring at me, through me. She's been crying, silently, probably since the moment she sprinted out of the hangar.

She knows she screwed up. I heard the whole thing. It's why I'm upset with both of them. I really ought to be more pissed at Frank... but I guess I'm a little more forgiving of him than I should be.

She's just worried for you, Frank. I wish you could actually see what you do to her. I know if I just tell you how she feels right now, you wouldn't care nearly as much as you would if you could see it. If you could be in the room next to me and watch a pretty 18-year-old girl hugging a pillow to herself in the bed, look up at me and say: "I know I fucked up, Rachel. Can the lecture wait a while?"

If you could see that, maybe you'd understand how we feel. It wouldn't make how Tabby handled herself right, but you might understand that this girl is getting closer to finally admitting that she loves you.

I sit next to her on the bed, and for a few long minutes she just keeps sniffling away. She tries to say something to me but she's incoherent. She stops trying to talk after a while. Eventually—I think maybe a half hour later—the tears stop and she sits up, leaning against me back to back.

"I guess the last week musta been pretty good if you're that upset," I say carefully. She laughs even as one of her elbows digs into my back, so that's a good start I think-

"H-here to run interference for him again?" she asks.

So it's gonna be like that. I guess I fired first.

We've had chats like this before. When Frank crashed his the Tomcat with Katya... again, none of us really handled it well. Tabby managed to pull off being somewhat collected around him at the time. When it was just me and her in private, she was almost as bad as she was after Tanana. After Berlin, when Frank dropped almost-but-not-quite-dead, she- we-

It was bad.

"We've talked about this before, Tabby." I lean back against her.

"I know..."

"But you keep doing it. You keep freaking out every time he puts himself in danger."

"I know..."

"And you also know he hates that. He hates seeing you worry like that!"

"And you're not much better than me, Rachel."

"Yeah..." My stomach grumbles along with my voice. Gotta try a different tack. "So he's your Guardian now, huh?" I cringe inwardly. I don't think I could make a more awkward change of subject if I tried.

"Uh-huh. I guess I really didn't tell you all about that."

"Because you're trying to hide," I start to raise my voice now, "that you *didn't* relax all week like I specifically told you to!"

I think I understand how she feels about Frank because I'm always worried about Tabby not getting enough sleep, not getting enough to eat, not getting enough downtime where she's not working her ass to exhaustion.

"I told you," she said, sniffling again. "H-he did all the heavy lifting for me on this!"
>>
>>32114862
>Oh.
>We're kinda not alright in the head, are we?

No, you all anit.
>>
>>32114910
"Look me in the eyes and tell me that." It's hard to believe her, especially when she *insists* in not trying to look at my face. I'm actually surprised when she leaves the bed to stand in front of me.

"He flew to the US with our new witch, personally pissed off one Matron Longstreet, and retrieved something that's..." Tabby looks away, trying to hide the fact that she looks ready to cry again, "something incredibly precious to me." She plops down to the floor, her voice falling almost to a whisper. "He does all this for me, and I..."

"He really pissed off Longstreet?"

"S-says she almost lost her shit right in front of him." She sniffles, and then smiles when I offer her a fist bump.

"Our pilot's a pretty awesome guy."

"Yeah... just to the wrong witch." Any happiness I saw in Tabby melts away from her face as her shoulders slump. "He was so angry. I j-just saw the blood, and... well, I was me about the whole thing... I don't know why this bothers me so much-"

"H-hey now..." I know where this is going. I know what she's going to say. Honestly, I'm kinda tired of this part of our little song and dance.

She's going to tell me that Frank should be looking to the girl who always backed him when she wanted him out of our squadron. The girl who always goes to bat for him when Tabby overreacts to every little thing he does that puts him in danger. She'll tell me I have an understanding of Frank Bishop that she could never have and this is why I'm more suitable for Frank Bishop.

And then I tell her that it's obvious he's not as interested in me as she thinks he is.

I'll remind her of all the times I've seen them together talking casually, making sure I don't show even a hint of envy. And I'm not envious at all. I'll remind her about how one time, he took her out to dinner. He's never done that for me. She'll probably try to deny it and I'll just remind her that I always have been a helluva lot more observant than she ever gives me credit for.
>>
>>32114925
I'll point out to her that he chose to go through with becoming her Guardian; he sacrificed his leave for her. I know he cares for her!

So we do this.

Except today, for whatever reason, every response I have to her usual crap hurts to say. When she tells me that I'm clearly more suitable for Frank, I feel a lump in my throat. My eyes start to sting so much that I'm blinking rapidly, because I know what comes next, and I can't believe that it's actually happening.

It hurts so much and I'm angrier than I expected to be at my best friend. I'm also angry at myself. I'm supposed to be making her feel better, right?

-

"Tabby, why do you keep telling me that I'm more suitable for Frank?" My teeth are clenched; it's all reflex. I don't mean to be this mad with her, much less show it. I vent in private. Tabby might be as stupid as Frank is when it comes to this sort of thing, but she doesn't deserve my anger. Not over this.

"What?" she asks, her eyes wide with shock. "I've b-been telling you why, where is this-"

"Tabby, why don't you just be fucking honest with him, and with me?" I spit these words at her. "I know why you freak out worse than everyone else every time he comes close to dying. You owe it to him, to me, and to yourself most of all!"

I think I now know what it looks like for words to hit someone in the stomach.
>>
All these feels.

Best girls.
>>
>>32114957
"You always, always tell me how I'm the one for Frank. You always tell me how you just have a small crush and it doesn't matter and that you know nothing is going to happen between you two, but I see the look on your face every time you spend more than five minutes with him." I'm on a roll now, snarling at her. "Frank's the only person in the entire squadron who can make you relax, even for a little bit. I've watched you smile just before he walks into your office on the Sara, before he walks in, and I've watched you scramble to keep that hidden from him. I know exactly why you freak out worse than everyone else whenever he goes up to fly, whenever he gets hurt. I know why it bothers you so much when he gets upset at you."

I'm standing up now, invading her personal space. She tries to scramble back from me, her face bright red. She ends up backing into the bookshelf across from her bed. She tries to slip past me and retreat to the other side of the room but I don't let her, pinning one of her hands against the bookshelves. When she tries to look away, I pull her chin to make sure her eyes are looking right into mine.

"Not this time kiddo," I growl.

"R-Rachel, I get what you're-"

"You don't want to lose him before you tell him how much he means to you. That's why you wanted to ground him after Berlin. That's why you've even considered finding a way to get him and Merlin sent stateside. And you can't *do that to him* no matter how much you love him because he's *not* yours to protect."

I really think this is hurting me as much as it's hurting her.
>>
>>32115005
"He doesn't believe me," I say, blinking rapidly again from all the damned dust in the air, "whenever I tell him that Tabitha Kazanski cares for him. He acts confused when I say you care for him, because all you're letting him see is a bossy little girl who wants to take his wings away from him, the ones that let him fly with us." I give her hand a squeeze. "With you. And after he's done so much *for you*. Honestly, you're such an idiot."

I think I'm getting through to her.

"If it's coming from you, he'll understand. I'm sure he will." I let go of her hand and push myself away from her. Deep breath. I'm shaking for some reason and I'm hoping she can't see that. I start pacing around the room, holding the side of my head like I'm trying to prevent it from bursting. "He still won't like it if you try to keep treating him like a helpless kid but I think he'll understand. Maybe he'll listen to you if you ask him to control himself, so he doesn't leak his stupid brains out of his nose and ears. H-he doesn't listen to me, hasn't listened to me when I've asked him to do that for us- for you- m-maybe it's gotta come straight from the source."

Tabby slowly sinks to the ground, watching me pace like a madwoman.

"I'm sorry," she whispers.

"Don't apologize to *me*, apologize to Frank! I'm used to being driven up the wall standing between the two of you!" When I realize that I'm shouting, I stop pacing. She looks like I've slapped her at least twice now, and that kinda makes me feel like a bitch. I sit down next to her, and wrap an arm around her shoulder to pull her in nice and close. "I'm not so good with these pep talks, huh?"

"Pretty good, actually." She does her best to give me the sort of hug I'm known for amongst the Spellcasters. Six out of ten, Tabby. That's the best I can do for you. "You're j-just demonstrating honesty to me."
>>
>>32115031
"Honesty kinda hurts, y'know." She can't see me wipe at my face the way she is right now, which is good because I'm realizing that my whole rant just now makes me a hypocrite of sorts, and that's upsetting; but this moment is pretty nice and I don't wanna spoil it.

Honesty, huh?

We sit against the bookshelves for awhile—I don't know how long really. I thought I was about to make her cry again... but maybe she's had enough of that for the day. Part of me hopes it's not for too long. I'm still hoping to catch Frank—to tell him that I think I've smoothed things over with Tabby.

"I just don't know how to tell him-" She says, breaking the silence. "H-how to apologize to him."

"You've got rope somewhere I'm sure." I try to joke. I wanna start laughing. The serious talk between us has been a long time coming, sure but-

The hug upgrades to a nine on my scale. I had it coming. Not bad, Icelady, not bad. I almost consider bringing the familiar into it, but that's cheating, isn't it?

"Don't even joke about that," she sniffles and laughs. "I- I might need a couple days..."

"Just... tell him, Tabby. Please." I shift slightly so I can breath a little easier. "Tell him you're sorry that you acted like a bossy little snot to him, that it's hard for you to see him like that. You're just worried for him. We all are."

"Yeah."

"Don't expect him to stop being a pilot for you, though. He won't, not for me, for you, for anyone." I feel wistful as I look out the window of Tabby's room. "He wants to be up there. Can't blame him, flying is freakin' awesome."

"Y-yeah..." She finally lets go of me, thank God. "Y'know, I kinda wish he'd picked me to fly with him that one time..."

"Even if it ended with you having a broken leg?"

"...We have heal witches."

"Such an M."

"Hey." She clonks me on the head, I deserved that too. I also deserve feeling like the room is positively on fire when she asks me "Have *you* been honest with Frank?"

Months ago, I kissed Frank Bishop in Alaska.

Spur of the moment thing. I slapped him first.

I really didn't think I'd get to see him again.

-

When he came back the first time, I didn't want to believe it.

I watched him make the decision to fly into superior numbers of Soviet fighters. His fighter was ripped apart and I could do nothing for him. He didn't think a moment for himself. His first concern was Merlin, then the rest of us. I don't think he was even on his own list. He should have died. He should have never come back to us.

And then he did and everything was cool. I kinda didn't believe it the moment he climbed out of his fighter and I spend that whole night still not believing it. It was too Disney, too sappy. Maybe I kissed him because I wanted to make sure that my friend was actually alive. He didn't seem to mind it at the time!

And then he did it again after Berlin, and I was there to watch him come back to life.

He's *really* got to cut out this habit of his.

Back when Tabby and Frank were at each other's throats and pissed off at each other all the time, when Patty was having her way with his old RIO, I played gatekeeper for the both of them. I'm not entirely sure when I started to feel anything other than amusement towards Frank. Definitely before I started trying to sneak into the men's showers with flashbangs. I can't deny that I liked what I saw in there, but come on. He wouldn't show up on one of Tabby's novels, but who cares about that. I know she doesn't.

Actually, now that I think about it, I've always thought well of Frank. I did like that he could drive poor Tabby up the wall without really even trying, but he was always friendly around me. He was always a bit of a dunce. For a while he couldn't fight back against any of my pranks. I'd do my usual flirty crap, and he'd kinda be all like "hurrrrrrrr" and I'd laugh because it was funny.
>>
>>32115103
He never thought less of me for it. In fact, he learned to fight back. And that was fun too. When he picked up that one bimbo for a short time, I made fun of him endlessly and he never got angry. He deserved it too, the asshat!

When Merlin became his RIO, that's when he changed the most.

As much fun as he was, I always thought he was on the fast track to a very short career. He was reckless. He was going to get himself killed or court martialed. I warned him, but like always he never took my advice. With Merlin, he seemed to finally 'get' the responsibility of being a pilot in a mixed squadron which gave Tabby many fewer headaches, to my relief. It also gave him a mean protective streak. You never, ever wanted to mess with Merlin, much less any of us. That's something that holds true to this day. And I liked that. Spellcaster's more or less my family now, so it was nice to have, y'know, a 'battle buddy' on that front. Even if he's a wuss outside of his plane and didn't wanna go whole hog on righteous vengeance against the bitches who messed with Goose that one time.

He's always been a pretty cool guy. I don't think there's a moment I can point to where I 'started' liking him.

But I do like him. A lot. I don't know when or how I can tell him, but I do.

Tabby's wanting that answer...

-

"Not honest enough," I say to her.

"And you're telling *me* to be honest..." she elbows me, still trying to wipe her face clean.

"I should take my own advice," I stand up, pulling her up to her feet with me. "Sorry I yelled at ya."

"Maybe that's what I needed..." She's still sniffling a bit. I can tell exactly when she remembers what happened in the hangar. Her eyes water up just slightly.

"You okay for now?"

"I'm getting better..." she lies. "Thanks for being here for me, Rachel."

"You couldn't possibly get rid of me." I point to the door she's still obviously so afraid of stepping through. "I'm hungry. Wanna grab something to eat?"
>>
>>32115152
"Just bring me something if you could... I don't think I should-" she cuts herself off. "I'd appreciate it."

"I might be a bit," I sigh. Damnit, Frank. "But I'll see what's good, okay?"

"A-are you going to see him now?" She's suddenly intensely curious.

"He's seeing to massive amounts of sour Kraut right now." I'm glad I got a chance to use that. It sounds funnier when you say that out loud and even Tabby smiles. "Maybe when he's done with her."

"Don't be too honest with him." She's got this odd look on her face. She's still sad, but there's something else there.

"Who, me?"

As I wave to her while walking out the room, I realize that I may have actually issued a challenge.

-

Young's leaving the lounge as I reach it. She looks at me and raises a finger to her lips.

"Smallti-" she shakes her head. "Bishop's really out of it. Fair warning." I can't read her expression as she leaves, but there's a bit of a spring to her step.

I find the big asshat conked out on a couch. I'm surprised I don't see Katya or Merlin anywhere nearby. I check the roof for the Stalker, but she seems to be missing as well. In fact, I'm the only other person in the room.

"Figures. I finally have you all to myself and you're all worn out from playing with other girls." I throw myself onto the couch next to him. He doesn't even move, still as death. My heart races a bit but then he shifts on his own, scratching at his face and yawning as he blinks awake.

"Msstuvfallin slep" he groans. He slaps his face to try and wake up, I fight the urge to laugh at him. "Hi Shilder."

"Hey aviator."

"Hey witch." He's quick to recover from his short nap, a heartening sign I suppose. He looks around for a moment. "Young's gone."

"Girls usually don't like it when you fall asleep on them when you're in the middle of something," I grin.

"Well, the girl's gotta be interesting..." he yawns again.

"So am I interesting?"

"Very."

Isn't the air conditioning ON in this stupid castle?
>>
>>32115203
"Need help finding a bed?"

"This is comfy enough." He settles back into the couch. "Have you already eaten?"

"Not yet, I was gonna see if you wanted to join me." I give him a poke on the ribs. "I don't think you could keep up with me right now, though."

"I've had a day and a half today." His eyes flutter shut. "You talk with Ice?"

I'm actually a little upset that he asked.

"I did."

"And?"

"She... needs time, Frank. She knows what she did... just give her a couple days, alright?"

"Fair enough," he shrugs, and that's when his stomach I think tries to roar at him. "So that's a sign."

"No shit!" I'm laughing, and he joins me after a moment. I don't think we've heard a sound like that. Eventually he's mostly awake and alert.

"I might be hungry," he says, still chuckling.

"Join me for some dinner?" I offer him my hand.

"Sure." He reaches towards me. "Help me up, would you?"

It's easy to pull him off the couch. There's a funny moment where he stumbles into me and I accuse him of moving way too fast for our own good. We're both kinda embarrassed by it, but we shit-talk our way through it like always.

It's nice to have something like that to rely on. I don't like thinking that moments like this could stop actually being a thing.

I have to help him to the mess hall. Mrs. Mackintosh once again has cooked a killer meal and I think Frank appreciates the food more than I do. It doesn't seem to energize him though; at one point he almost drops his fork on the ground. He looks so tired while he eats, it's like he could sleep forever. And that thought frightens me.

But he's still here, and for the moment he's mostly all mine.

And that's good enough for now.

I'm really enjoying all these feels and all the girls are great.

But shitstorms are a secret horrible vice of mine. If stuff came to a head I'd be in the Silder camp but if I smell blood in the water I don't think I'd be able to help myself.

I'm looking forward to how Ghost handles his greatest trial.

Frank dominated her in a dogfight. That's kinda hot, y'know.

Maybe she's one of those types that really likes it when the man's on top. Ghost, any insight?
>>
>>32115645

She's a Young. what do you think?

You just keep working to justify Ice + Slider as a thing, you quit trying to bring more witches into the mix. Leave that to merc. MERC MORE JANICE WHEN.
>>
>>32115645
Oh so like Ice then but less rope?

Dammit, Bishop's snagged another one.

Also I just realized something about Stalinka?

She might be the only one that thinks this might be normal for Frank to bleed (she has not heard about the comas probably)

However besides all the shit that happens to Frank, she believes he will rise like the eagle she thinks he is...

That is somewhat endearing yet frightening
>>
>>32115693
Ghost, She's a Young, She's German.

That's like saying asking the very dark cloud to not rain.

or Frank to turn in his wings.

I think I know why Frank passed out.... :)
>>
>>32115696
On a scale of one to "Universal vaporization" how bad does Stalinka freak out when discovering Frank might die and she didn't do it?
>>
>>32115693
How does the best girl Wyvern feel about all this drama?
>>
>>32115696
Funnily enough, I'd guess that Konstantina in some fashion inherently "trusts" Frank more than any of the other witches. In her mind, it's impossible that there would ever be a time where he pushes too hard. In her mind, he will always come back victorious, and she never has to worry about his mortality
>>
>>32115718
Small tactical nuke maybe?

Aimed at the person who managed to push him that far.
>>
>>32115722

Wyvern is unimpressed with the fleshbags attempts to take her pilot. She's even less impressed with the fragments of that SLUT WHORE F-14 that tried to kill her pilot.
>>
>>32115735
>mortality
We don't have to worry about that if Frank gets augmented.
>>
>>32115755
>SLUT WHORE F-14

Those are fighting words, bitch.

>SLUT WHORE F-14 that tried to kill her pilot
Wow. Guess there's 2 yanderes in the quest now
>>
>>32115755
Is... Is this canon? Because I really, really want it to be. We've not had much development on the machine spirit of the Wyvern. I think we need to sit down and have a nice, long talk with our girl so we can get an even better feel for her.
>>
>>32115788
She's just very very protective of her man.
>>
>>32115791
Wyvern sits down and tells Frank exactly how many witches want him to put his fuel hose in their intake ports.
>>
>>32115791
If what Ghost just said is canon, I think Merlin'd be a little out of her element translating
>>

>I'm kinda mad cos i think this will make his medical records longer than mine (again, the cheating fuck)
I found the solution to making sure mine was longer than all my friends and family, serving and not: Be in charge of rescuing Seals off of mountains after they fuck everything up for 2 and a half years straight, it got me 23 xrays, 7 MRIs and somewhere around 12 surgeries and more to come.

Thanks for the thread Ghost.
>>
>>32115791

it's semi-canon. the wyvern does have a machine spirit, and it is exceedingly protective of Frank and merlin, and very eager to please them, but it's not quite that developed yet.

Of course, all the sparkle fantastic bullcrap that it's exposed to... well. yeah. It's probably easily the largest, most complex machine to have magic energy directly applied to it on a regular basis to date, and no one's real sure what that would do.
