You are Anthony Grant, but it's been about a week since you became Ambrosis the level 31 cleric. It was five days before the race, but after staying up for the entire night and afternoon, all you wanted to do was fall asleep.

When you finally wake up it's dark out and you can hear banging coming from the room next to you.

“DAMN IT!” You hear a muffled voice come from the other room.

You turn a groggy eye towards the wall separating you and the noise maker.

“AH COME ON!” You hear the person say. It sounds familiar and you quickly realize it is Canis yelling.

You roll out of bed and put on your armor; can never be too prepared, after all.

“GOD DA- SO CLOSE!”

You reach the door before you hear the wood of your wall suddenly crack and break.

“AH HA! Wait...”

You open the door, head out to the hallway, go to the next door, and knock. “You okay in there?”

“I'm just a little stuck!” Canis responds.

“Need some help?”

“Just a little!”

You open the door to find the bed flung over on its side, and Canis' leg inside the wall dividing your room and his. After taking the moment to look about the room, you look to the Wolf-fang and ask, “Is it bad that I had assumed you were having some kind of strange kinky wall sex with someone? Because, trying to kick a hole in the wall was not on my list of-”

“I was trying to kick the rift.” He cuts you off.

Kicking the rift was the phrase the two of you used to describe his near-mystical ability to glitch through walls in any game, named after the time he kicked a wall and fell through the floor into a hidden area.
>>
>>32127871
“So, why do you want to fall towards the center of the planet?” You ask.

“I just wanted to see if it still worked.” He starts kicking the wall some more. “Mind helping me get my leg free?”

“Yeah,” You respond, heading over to him. “Let me just...” You grab his leg and try to angle his foot out of the hole. “There.” You say once his foot is finally freed.

“Thanks.” He says with a sigh, sprawling himself out on the floor. “Too bad it didn't work. I've pretty much tried all my tricks out except the waltz one.”

“Please don't use my brother to get to the void.”

“No, that would take too long. Maybe I should just change my subclass to dancer? I mean, physician is nice, but with a healer in the party, is there even a point?”

[ ] “Stay physician. It's useful when I'm not around and they probably patched out all the tricks with the expansion anyways.”
[ ] “Well, it's your choice. I'm not going to stop you.”
[ ] “Don't pick up dance. Change it to a more useful subclass.”

Subclass leveling would take too long. No point in changing it unless you really want to and even if people just grinded their subclasses to max pre database it would take longer now

[other]Nah. it'll take longer to get it leveled decently if you try to grind it out since we actually live in game time now.

>>32128162
proper party planning means you dont NEED the extra heals and if you dont need them then the heals could have been dpsing or buffing. It basically all comes down to opportunity costs.

“Stay physician.” You say, “It's useful for when I'm not around, and they probably patched everything out anyways.”

He holds his hands up and looks to literally weigh his options. “When will you not be around?” He asks.

“When I'm being brainfucked by the Man in Black.”

“HOT!” He responds instantly, “But, seriously, when would you not be around? Because I would rather not be wasting half my character doing something we already have.”

“No, seriously.” You explain, “Brain fucked by the Man in Black. That's why I can't remember anything that happened back in Ekechi. I pretty much got a call from my brother and when I answered, BAM! Brainfucking.”

“HOT!”

“Not really, my brother was there and-”

“HOOOOOOOOT~!”

“Okay, serious time: My brother called me, and the only thing I remember after that is waking up in the cart. I don't think I was in control of my body at the time. I don't even remember leveling up! WHEN THE HELL DID I MAKE MORE TRUE LEVERS!?”
>>
>>32128559
“What whos?”

“True Levers. It's what I'm calling the levers that I made before the databasing. They can pretty much stick to anything and work like the gears they would be attached to are already in place.”

“Sounds fancy.”

“I know, right? Anyways, I can't find a way to make them anymore, but I somehow did while I was being brainfucked.”

“That's quite a brainfucking. Wish I had a magic brainfucking penis.” Canis laughs.

You let out a “Pffff” trying not to laugh at his comment.

Canis gets off the floor and puts his bed right side up. “Let's go do something.”

“Like what?”

He shrugs, “I don't know. See what Lilac is building? See what Tove's drinking? Try to find out what Takeshi does when he's alone? Go get drunk and sing about the end of the world? Anything's possible, really.”

“Fuck it, let's get drunk.” You say.

“Yeah! Let me just...” He examines the hole in the wall. “Let me... Uhh... Wait...” He takes up the mattress from the bed and tosses it over the hole. “Perfect. Let's go!”

Canis and you leave the inn and head off to the tavern.

“Barkeep!” Canis announces, “I demand all the booze! Mix them into a single drink! Hand unto me, THE BOOZESTROSITY!”

The man behind the bar gives Canis a confused look.

“Boozestrosity,” You explain, “Like a monstrosity, but make of booze.”

The barkeep gives a slow nod and places a pitcher on the bar. He then fills it with just about everything he has, much to your best friend's liking.

“Another one!” Canis shouts, “For my friend here!” He pats you on the back.

“Oh, and two shots of whatever!” You command, “For our friendship!”

The two of you laugh before downing the shots with a boozestrosity chaser.

You let out a sigh of relief. “Now if only this could actually get us drunk.”

“What?” Canis raises an eyebrow. “This stuff gets you drunk.”

“No it doesn't!” You counter, “If it could, I could taste the alcohol! Everything would taste like vodka, but it doesn't, because it can't get you drunk!”

Canis gives a not-sure-if-joking face before asking, “What do we do every time we get drunk?”

“Play rockband at the bar and sing shit.”

“And every time you've had something to drink, what did we do?”

“Sing, but... Nooooo.”

“See, this is some Pavlov. You're like Pavlov's singing drunk!”

“When the hell did that happen!?”

“More boozestrocity, less questions!”
>>
>>32129638
The two of you begin to drink your ungodly drinks. It all tastes like water to you. He must be messing with you, right?

“Is this one of those, tell him he's drunk and he'll act drunk thing?” You ask.

“Ha! I wish! If I had magic get-people-drunk powers, my parties would be a million times less expensive! People would just show up and I'd 'woobity woobity woo, you're drunk!' them and all I'd need to pay for is food!”

“Didn't you try that once?”

“Oh yeah! I completely forgot that!” The two of you laugh. “That's how I know it doesn't work! That's experimentation. That's science!”

“Yarr!” You hear behind you.

Both you and Canis turn around and yell out, “TROVE!”

“I bring me grog for all! Yarr!” He shouts back.

“Into the boozestrosity it goes!” Canis holds out his pitcher.

The pirate pours you and Canis some of his cactus fruit grog.

“We were almost half way done.” You comment.

“Half way there?” Canis asks.
>>
>>32129675
“OOOOH! WE'RE HALF WAY THERE! WOOOOOAAAAHH~! LIVIN' ON A PRAYER!” The two of you sing before laughing at one another. Neither of you knew the next lines of the song.

“TAKE MY HAND!” Trove sings, “AND WE'LL MAKE IT, I SWEEEEEAAAAAAR!”

“WOOOOAAAH! LIVIN' ON A PRAYER!” All three of you sing.

Soon the entire tavern is singing along.

The night advances just like the two previous nights of drinking you shared with Canis. The grog may have had a nice color to it, but it didn't taste any different. At least you wouldn't get scurvy.

Just as you three are ready to go to sleep, Canis taps your shoulder and says, “Look at me.”

You do as instructed.

“Alright, well, don't look, but Lilac just walked in.”

You instinctively start to turn around.

“What did I just say!” Canis exclaims through his teeth.

You look back to him.

“Okay, so, here's my plan. I'm going to go over there, and you're going to talk to her. I'll be giving you advice from afar, alright?”

“Alright, let's do this.” You reply.

Canis rubs his hands together and looks around. “Okay. You stay here for right now. I'm going to be helping you from afar.” He steps away.

You get a call. It's from Canis.

“Hello?” You say.

“Pretend you're not on the phone with me.”

“I thought that part was a bit obvious.” You look over to him as hit approaches a woman.

“Hi. Can you help me with something?” He pauses, “Thanks. You see my friend over there?” He points to you. “Well, he's trying to get with this girl he really likes, but needs help. Normally I wouldn't need help with this, but she knows us, so she'd know something's up if I am over there with him, so if you can help me look like I'm having a conversation with you while I'm actually helping him?” A pause, “Thank you. My name's Canis, by the way.”

Did he just use you as an in to get with a random girl?

“You there?” He asks.

“Yeah, I'm here.”

“Okay, she looks kinda depressed. You two already know each other, so there isn't much you need to do. Just approach her, ask if everything's okay, and I'll advise you from there.”

You take a deep breath and start walking towards her.

Should you smile?

Yeah, you should smile.

Why does this smile feel awkward?

Fuck! You look like an idiot!

Abort! Abort!

You begin to turn, but then Canis says, “Stop freaking out. You're too drunk to be freaking out. Just remember that. You're too drunk to be freaking out.”

He's right! You're too drunk!

And why should you give a shit!? As long as things don't go horribly, no one will remember it!

“Yeah.” She says with a sigh, “I can't seem to get any of the parts together. It's like the gears refuse to touch each other. Doesn't help that I can't even make gears or chains.” She looks up to you, eyes wide. “But you can, can't you!?”

You smile and confidently state, “Yes, I can.”

“Okay.” Canis says, “Now it looks like you cheered he up a bit. That's good, now-”

Lilac grabs you by the wrist and starts rushing for the door, dragging you with her.

“Oh.” Canis says. “I guess he didn't need any help after all. So, what are you doing-”

CLICK.

Lilac drags you through the streets, across train tracks, and around the giant boulder. She finally stops in front of a small shop. The sign looks to have been broken to pieces, whatever was once there is illegible now.

Lilac opens the door and inside you see a room filled with turned over boxes and machine parts.

“Ummm...” You say.

“This is my shop. It looks like someone broke in and took most of important stuff, but all of the parts are still here. That's where you come in.” Lilac explains, “I can't actually put machine parts together, but you can, right?”

“Yeah?”

“Well, I need you to build my racer for me.”

You take a couple of seconds to process what just happened. “But... I... I think I'm too drunk for this right now.”

“Perfect,” She replies, “Only the good engineers are drunk white they work.”

“You keep using the word good, and I don't think you know what it means.”

She looks quite angered by that.

“Sorry.” You say.

She mumbles something to herself.

“What was that?” You ask.

“Nothing.” She replies, “All you need to do is do exactly as I tell you.”

Well the strict definition of "Overskill" is just any use of skills that wasn't intended as part of the game mechanics. For example, combining the Cooking skill with manual cooking to create real food is an Overskill.

So technically we were using an Overskill the moment we created that chairapult.

“Okay.” You say, “But only on the condition that I get to attach a lever to anywhere I choose.”

Lilac thinks for a while and says, “Deal.”

After only two tries, you succeed to grasp her hand, and the two of you shake on the deal.

You turn to the pile of parts. “Okay, what am I looking at?”

“I was thinking of a standard car design, but then I realized that the roads are ruined. At a high speed the axle could break if it hits anything too hard, so we should probably go with an off road design. Probably make it as light as possible by just making an open chassis and-”

“How do you intend to power this thing?”

“I... Hmmm...” She sits down in a chair to think. “I guess an engine is out of the question.”

You begin to think as well. “What about a horse-sized hamster wheel.”

“If it's powered by horses, then we still run into the problem of stamina.”

“Well, it's not like we can make a steam engine and have some kind of car-train thing.”

There is silence for a while. Then Lilac asks “Why can't we?”

“Because...” You tilt your head to the side. The thought of building a steam engine had never crossed your mind. “I... I don't know. Can the physics engine actually take steam into account?”

She gets back up and starts pulling shelves from the shop. All kinds of things clatter to the floor. Weapon parts, tea cups, bars of various metals, rolls of cloth.

“Found it.” She says, pulling out a shelf and handing it to you.

You take the shelf and see that inside are bottles of water. “We'll need something to boil them in.”

“Over here.” She says, directing you to the back of the shop. In back, behind a door, is a tiny room with a bed, a table, a chest, and a fireplace. Quite minimalistic, but far neater than the front of the shop.

Lilac is looking through the chest, throwing things onto the floor until she finally pulls out a large pot and lid.
>>
>>32132240
We need wood.” You say.

“Yeah yeah.” She lets the pot and lid clatter to the floor as she goes back to the main room.

You sigh and put down the shelf. You start pouring the bottles of water into the pot when she returns with some wood.

The starts piling the wood into the fireplace when she suddenly asks, “How am I supposed to light this?”

“Magic?” You says, emptying the last bottle.

“Fireball!” She shouts.

“That... is not exactly what I mean, but-”

“Put the pot on.”

You give her a less than entertained look.

“Please?” She asks.

With a sigh, you heft the pot of water onto the flames. Lilac then places the lid and the two of you sit back and watch.

“How long does it take water to boil?” You ask.

Lilac seems to actually calculate the question before she finally concludes, “I have no idea.”

You give her a soft chuckle and she smiles in return.

“So, if this works, and you can actually use steam to power things, do you actually know how to make a steam engine?”

“No,” She responds, “But I have five days to learn.”

“Four.” You correct her.

“FOUR!?”

“What about a wind powered land-ship.” You suggest.

“Only winds out at sea are reliable enough to actually power vehicles, and even then, the winds can still cut out from time to time.”

“Ah.”

The two of you continue to watch the pot for any sign of boiling when you notice that the lid beginning to bounce back and forth, little clouds of steam popping up around it.

“IT WORKS!” Lilac shouts.

“Holy shit it works!” You yell, “We can make steampunk everything now!”

“Now all we need to do is find out how to...” She suddenly loses her enthusiasm, “reinvent the steam engine.” She leaps onto her bed. “I give up. Good night.”

The problem with clockwork is that it basically only does a handful of actions over and over again.

Now, if we could have some kind of gear swapping mechanism, you could expand the number of actions, but you're still only left with a finite amount.

She leaps up, standing on her bed, face red. “OUT!” She shouts. “OUT OF MY SHOP!”

“-pai?”

She starts pushing you, not that she has the strength to actually move you. You simply move backwards out of the shop.

“GET OUT!” She continues to shout until you are finally out of the shop. She slams the door in your face.

You meander through the empty streets, back to the inn, when you hear a familiar voice.

You round a corner to see him wielding his giant sword, slicing at absolutely nothing.

“Hyah!” He says as he cuts down absolutely nothing.

He turns to see you. “The samurai code says two friends training together is better than training alone.” He explains. “Do you want to train with me?”

“Is that what you do when you're not around?” You ask, “Train?”

“Yes.” He responds, “Practice makes perfect, as the samurai code says.”

“Any reason why the samurai code has a lot of English phrases?”

“Because the wisdom of the samurai encompasses all cultures.” He bows, for some reason.

You suddenly resolve yourself. “No.” You state, “I have something I need to do.”

You turn around and begin running off for the public crafting area, not that you know where that is, but after a wandering around you find it quick enough.

You begin to think. First thing you'll need is a chassis? Wings? No! You will not make the same mistake as Lilac. The first thing you are starting with is an engine!

You know a steam engine will work, so that's what you'll make. A steam engine!

It should be simple enough. A piston is pushed by steam, which turns the gears. Simple.

You'll have one bucket filled with coals, and another filled with water on top of it. Yes. Genius.

Then you'll put a cover on the water bucket, carve out a little hole in the cover, and put the piston there.

Bam! Steam engine.

This shit's so simple You have no idea why she was complaining.

Now that you know what you are making, what are you going to make it out of?

You could use some of the higher level metals, but they all seem pretty heavy.

You eye the Steel Silk in your inventory. It pretty much had the properties of steel in a light weight cloth. Perhaps that would to the trick? But cloth can't hold water. That's just silly.

“Standard steel, probably.” You think out loud. It weighted about the same as iron, but was strong. Too bad the game didn't have any light metals like titanium or aluminum.

Steel buckets. Steel buckets. Where will you get steel buckets? A blacksmith, probably. You don't know any other than Lilac, and you had no intention of going back to her. You were going to make this thing on your own.

Perhaps there was a blacksmith somewhere in the inn? It was worth a shot.

You start walking back towards the inn.

You pass by Lilac's shop.

You can't help but feel a twinge of guilt.

Lilac is a bitch. We can use MIB as our lore guide.
>>
>>32134028
In her defense we were being an asshole to her by saying that her engineering skills a shit since last session, it's natural to get mad.

SWAG
>>
>>32134048
Her engineering skills are shit. Steam engines are not complicated in the slightest.
>>
Remember to archive
>>
>>32134048
Except her skills are shit. It's obvious she's trying to pass herself off as more competent than she really is.
>>
>>32134048
It's becoming increasingly likely that she was lying when she said she was an engineer.

Super samefag.

What if she's like an architecture engineer or an environmental engineer?

Then she'll admit to not being fucking qualified to go build racecars instead of knowing shit about engineering.

kinda been a dick to her recently, anyone would be mad

We don't have anything to apologize for, barring some weird backstory quirk Lilac has that we have no knowledge of at the moment. Shit, if we're apologizing to anybody at all it'd better be Judicature.
>>
There is no need to apologize. What is needed is vindication for the Betrayer's sacrifice.
If the Liar won't do it then someone else must.
>>
>>32134274

Lilac fucking better as well, she's wasting Judicature's time, not her own.
>>
Fuck lilac. When we get to the big apple, can we make a deal with the man in black? I will gladly trade this cunt for our idiot brother.
>>
>>32134328
>idiot brother.

We're going to have a sister by that point.
>>
>>32134328

That's a bit over the line.

Still, I won't say no to ditching her.
>>
>>32134337
You mean like a sister in law?

There's always Coyote. I'm sure he's down to steal a maiden's heart.

No.

Then what do you mean?

>>32134355
Whatever happened to that PKer Coyote killed?

Guys in female bodies tend to go a bit.../odd/ in Log Horizon.

Such hostility in this thread.

Why has everyone suddenly become so hostile to each other?

>>32134274
>weird backstory quirk
Everyone has one of those, but those are secrets the characters like keeping to themselves.

Waifu wars. What did you expect would happen?
>>
>>32134380
Lack of killing/levering things. That tension has to go somewhere.
>>
>>32134375
From what I gathered in our Magical Realm Edition quest thread, our brother is still male.
>>
>>32134375
Your brother is in a male body, unless you are implying he's going to drink a gender change potion at some point.
>>
>>32134437
>still
operative word
>>
>>32134440
Normally I wouldn't consider that likely, but given his relationship...

Well, it's possible. Not that anon, btw.
>>

>>32134440

Whoops, misread that then.
