Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is warm, and the date is August 14.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you just woke up. Today was the day you were going to rob an illegal underground fight club and get away it. That was your hope anyway. Getting up, you started going about your regular morning routine. You weren’t going to hit the joint until later in the afternoon anyway so you had some time for now. In fact, before you could even start you needed to acquire a drill. You knew where to get one though so it wasn’t like it was a big problem but the sooner you got it done, the sooner you didn’t have to worry about it. That meant going to work.

Come to think of it you still had plenty of hours left and summer was coming to a close rather fast. There was only about half a month left before school started up again. Everything had just been so busy lately. At least it wasn’t some boring routine you mused.

Back to the topic of work though, your boss was a marked man. Someone wanted him out of the picture but no one had any idea who it could be. If he died you’d be free from your work though but all said he was a pretty cool guy so you’d rather that he didn’t. Who else was going to teach you how to cobble together homemade items to aid in your future heists?

Going to work after breakfast sounded like a plan, you’d be able to get more hours in than usual as well. Then again you also had other stuff on your plate that you could probably square away quickly. The favour for Sparky was just a matter of dealing with Toulour after all. Or you could get some reading done because honestly, doing honest work in the morning sounded like a pain.

You still went to work anyway. It was better to just get it over with. Still in your wheelchair, you made your way over to School District 17. If you remembered correctly, the doc had scheduled an appointment with you tomorrow. It was to see if you had recovered enough to do without the wheelchair. With the way you were feeling, the wheelchair was starting to feel a little unnecessary but you’d rather listen to the opinion of a healthcare professional. There was no significant amount of pain today so you laid off the pills for once.

Number 3 wasn’t in his office when you arrived. The sound of his cursing was enough for you to guess at what he was currently doing. Your boss was working on his rocket again. Out back the finished engines were attached to what looked like a central fuel tank which in turn had cables running from the nose to a laptop. Running between the screen and one of the engines, he seemed to try and isolate some kind of problem that you weren’t immediately aware of. It was probably why he was swearing.

“Torikov, good timing,” he greeted as he fiddled with what looked like another cable, “Can you keep an eye on the fuel pump gauge for me?”

Seemed simple enough.

“I think I got it,” the gauge shot up.

Your warning didn’t arrive in time as he was sprayed in the face with whatever was in the tank before it petered out.

“Crap,” he wiped off his face, “Stupid fuel pump hasn’t been working properly and it isn’t a bug in the software I double checked last night. I’d buy you a drink or something if you helped me with this but I’ve still got a buncha other stuff to do and I trust you enough to handle them.”

If you helped with his rocket you’d probably be stuck here all day. Besides, you needed to build your own drill so his work would serve as a perfect cover for your personal project. Then you could leave early and do something else.

Deciding to leave your boss to his hobbies, you went back to the office to see what needed to be done. There were several things you noticed. First was the paperwork, which wasn’t too much, then came some cataloguing and finally some building. The first two took a few hours but you weren’t complaining about the mindless work. Number 3 occasionally checked in but mostly you saw him hovering around his pet project for the majority of the time as you started on the builds. There were some interesting plans for what looked like camera-based sensor that could be packed in to a suit case the size of a laptop. You weren’t building the camera itself but the case which would fit the camera and all the electronics. At present you had no idea what possible uses it had but you got to work regardless. In parallel to that you built your own portable drill that could be attacked to surfaces.

By the time you were done with your work, it was several hours past lunch. You found it strange that you didn’t feel hungry until after you were done. Number 3 said it was normal though you’re not sure you were enjoying the sensation now. You could probably call it a day with the work you did. Then again your boss was still struggling with his rocket engines. You could just pop out for lunch and dive right back in to it though you’re sure your afternoon was forfeit then.

>What are your plans after a late lunch?

Well you only popped out for a late lunch before coming back to check on Number 3. If you were lucky someone might try and off him again and you’d have better idea on who it was. In the mean time there was no harm in helping him with his rocket. There was a reason he was so focused on it now.

“You know my background so I have friends who tell me things from time to time,” he said, “I heard rumblings about a space probe contest that was going to start up in September.”

“That’s like two weeks from now though,” you pitched in some elbow grease, “You sure you can get this done on time?”

“Course I can, and with your help we’ll totally make it,” he smiled back.

“The question is, will you be around to enjoy it?”

“Hah, if I can at least get this baby up and running then I’d have no regrets.”

Well if he died happy you weren’t going to hold it against him.

“I really do appreciate your help though. I’d take you out for a drink again but Ryuu would scold me.”

“You were serious about that huh? Maybe some other time then, I got plans tonight.”

“With that cute girlfriend of yours?”

“That obvious huh?”

He just grinned and told you to double check the fuel pumps again.

The time is now later afternoon, the weather is surprisingly pleasant and the date remains unchanged.

You were now in possession of a drill. With the tools of the trade, a plan and a crew, you had all the elements necessary to pull off the job. Now all that was left was to meet up with Asuka and get to the venue. Sagara, Tadakuni and Kyousuke had gone ahead separately so there were no worries there.

Before you went would you like to review the plan in it’s entirety?

Your plan was simplicity itself. Whilst everyone was focused on the fights at the establishment, your crew were going to rob them. In your way was a reinforced door that necessitated either a drill, which you just acquired, or a key card, which, you were sure, was in the Pit Boss’ office. Once through Tadakuni was going to go in and relieve the house of their dirty money whilst everyone else ran some sort of distraction or helped carry the loot. The getaway driver would be on the scene as soon as the drill was through so your crew could get out before anyone noticed. If someone did notice, Asuka or you were ready to engineer a riot to cover the escape. Of the five of you, Asuka and you probably had the highest chance of making it out of that melee.

As for specific roles, Tadakuni was obviously your way in to the money whereas Sagara and Kyousuke were going to distract the house and the crowd respectively with you pitching where it was needed. Asuka was going to be the star of the show however. Billed as a champion fighter in the circuit, she was going to duke it out with Toshino Kyouko, a girl you paid half a million yen for the fight.

Having met up with Asuka, you were both watching a low stakes fight from one of the VIP boxes when you got a call from Nakazawa.

“I’m just calling to give you a fair warning. Anti-Skill and Judgement are gearing up for something big tonight but I’m not sure what.”

It looked like your timetable was going to be moved up a bit just in case. Thanking him quickly, you gave Asuka a nod before leaving the box with her. There was still some time before her fight so she could help you,

The time is now 1852.

The sooner you started the faster you could get out of here and drilling was probably going to take a while. You smuggled it in under your wheelchair. The guards here were too stupid to check anyway. Plus, you didn’t want to take the chance of trying to steal the key card and failing. Tadakuni nicked the package from you and got to work as silently as a ghost. His Ability was to dampen all kinds of sounds so he was going to have to baby sit the thing as it did its work. Thankfully Sagara was still monitoring security and occasionally pretending to line up the odds.

Soon enough, Asuka was called forward for her own fight. You had to be amazed somewhat at how many heads had turned towards her. They parted to let her through, the expressions on their faces were clear, ‘look, but do not touch’. Toshino Kyouko came in from the other end, a ridiculous spear in her hand. Both she and her spear were bathed in a blue aura that was even more intense than the last time you saw her. Asuka wasn’t intimidated at all, drawing The Dean with an almost lazy flourish. The murmurs were barely enough to mask the sound of the drill but thankfully the two lovely, and undoubtedly deadly, ladies had the full attention of practically everyone present.

While tempting to watch the fight, Asuka was fighting her rival after all. You turned your attention towards and scanned the crowd, trusting both Tadakuni and Asuka to do their parts. Nakazawa’s warning was still running in the back of your head though. If Anti-Skill were on the prowl tonight then you’d have to be on the lookout for those that didn’t belong. Most of the spectators were about your age, maybe slightly older, so anyone that was significantly above the average in terms of age was suspicious.

The time is now 1907.

Tadakuni had a couple of problems with the drill. The delay was significant enough that even you were starting to wonder if you should have swiped the key card instead. Still, your attention never left the crowd as Asuka’s fight continued. They’d been going at it for a while now by your watch and if the cheers were anything to go by, they’d been going at it with flair. That’s why you caught sight of a few suspicious fellows. At some point during the fight, Lord Kudou had appeared in one of the spectator boxes. He hadn’t noticed you yet given that he was focused on the fight and he was frowning as per usual. The other anomaly was a short girl though more than that you couldn’t make out due to the poor lighting. Your suspicion was because she was edging closer and closer to Kyousuke. Another exclamation from the crowd punctuated some unseen action in the ring.

The important part of being inconspicuous was to not attract attention. Besides, you weren’t exactly sure who or what the girl was in the first place so you’d just have to wait and see rather than cause an unnecessary scene. Your message to Kyousuke gave him just enough warning before the girl came close enough to catch his attention. You couldn’t catch their conversation, not with this kind of noise anyway but it looked like she was urging him to do something, desperate to get him somewhere. Eventually he caved though, sending you a message.

“Anti-Skill are coming, ETA 10 minutes. G2G, take my share if you want”

The time is now 1911

You were down one man and on a time limit now. Tadakuni had gotten through only a minute ago and he was going through the lockboxes now. It’d take him just a minute to get through them but there were a lot of lockboxes, not to mention the time needed to transport the loot. As for Asuka, she wasn’t dragging out the fight as you caught a glimpse of the action. It was more like she seemed unable to put down her opponent. You suspect that magic was involved but you had no idea how to help her out in this case. At least you could call for your getaway vehicle now.

Tadakuni needed all the help could get so you quickly went to aid him. Nearly imperceptibly nodding to Sagara you wheeled by and started to help Tadakuni. It wasn’t the first time you picked a lock but it was certainly been a while so you worked slower than he did. Still, your telekinesis was helpful in regards to bagging the loot. You piled it up in a corner, readying it for transport. You managed to get about five done by the time Sagara sent you a message telling that Asuka was done with her fight.

The time is now 1920.

Anti-Skill was going to show up any minute now so you were now faced with a choice. The getaway driver was still a viable option, as Toulour had promised you, so it was a matter of gathering everyone together to haul out the loot bags while the chaos descended. That however, was putting all your eggs in one basket. If you hung together and got caught well, by either Anti-Skill or otherwise then you’d be in some shit. Leaving separately lessened the chance of capture but then ones without the cash, that is you and Asuka, would have to act as bait. Either way there was going to be a riot.

You were going to stick with the original plan. You and Sagara switched places, just in time for the commotion to start. There were tear gas and flash bangs thrown in to the area as soon as the time hit 1921. Anti-Skill were right on time, exactly as Kyousuke had told you. Thus you were prepared, which was much more than the rest of the spectators. It was easy for you to run in to the pit proper and whisk Asuka away, or at least that was the plan. Once again your girlfriend had her opponent over one shoulder and her sword over the other and it didn’t look likely that she was going to drop the former.

“Come dear, I believe we were on our way out,” she ushered you through the fighter’s tunnel entrance.

“Do we really have to bring her with us?” you asked.

“Of course we do, how is she going to reimburse your half a million yen when she finds herself imprisoned?” Asuka replied easily.

To be fair you weren’t too attached to the money if it meant you had a clean getaway. You could just consider it the price of such a thing. You didn’t voice your objections though as followed her through a familiar passage. As you emerged from the tunnel you were met with the stern gaze of Lord Kudou.

“Asuka, I am under the impression that you have been avoiding me,” he said.

“Kyril, please ask my father why he is here,” she didn’t speak with him.

You wanted to ask her why but then realised it was a rather stupid question that you already had an answer to. Thus you relayed her message.

“If that is how you wish to play it,” he sighed, “I am here to offer my moral support to my daughter. I can do at least that much as a father.”

“Dear please tell him that his support was unnecessary and undoubtedly insincere. Consequently I do not need his support.”

“We really should continue this touching reunion over lunch tomorrow Pops,” you didn’t follow her script, “before we all break in to tears, from the tear gas.”

“Of course,” he smiled, “I am not averse to it. Let it be known that I do not shy away when invited so politely.”

Asuka didn’t protest as you started leading her away but she did seem slightly displeased.

“Oh and a word of advice my boy,” he spoke again, “There is a running gun battle going on up there.”

Lord Kudou wasn’t kidding. You recognised the sound of gunfire, most of it automatic. Though no one was paying attention to your odd group yet, it didn’t mean that you couldn’t be hit by a ricochet. Moving further from the gun battle you could see a checkpoint had been set up. Looks like they put a lockdown on the immediate neighbourhood and it wouldn’t be lifted for a while yet. While you could just have Asuka bluff your way out of the mess, you didn’t want to take your chances just yet. Still, if you stayed too long they may find you anyway as they combed the area for stragglers.

“I do wonder if we could force our way through,” Asuka weighed in.

“There are ways out of the nineteenth,” Toshino Kyouko chose that moment to wake up, “Ugh my head. Put me down Kuso, the hell you hit me with?”

Asuka dropped unceremoniously.

“Well fuck you too,” the redhead hissed.

“I hit you in the head at least twenty three times with the flat of The Dean,” Asuka answered pleasantly, “I see your constitution is as formidable as ever.”

“What alternates are there?” you asked Toshino Kyouko.

“There are tunnels. Most of them unmapped but I know them like the back of my hand.”

“I still prefer the direct approach though that is simply my opinion,” Asuka repeated.

What’s the escape plan?

Despite the fact that Asuka had slapped her across the face twenty three times she was surprisingly lucid, and very sensible. It was probably magic. You didn’t want to walk through an Anti-Skill check point with a gun in your possession. Somehow you were disappointed you hadn’t used it yet. Besides there were still cameras despite how much of a slum the district was. It was hard to hide from those without inviting some peculiar questions.

“So, can we call it even here?” Toshino was leading you through the tunnels.

“Hardly Wanko-chan,” Asuka answered for you, “You are finding a way to escape Anti-Skill and we are merely following you.”

“What’s with the nicknames anyway?” you interjected.

“It is merely how her name is written dear,” Asuka elaborated, “It could be read as ‘Anko’ and she had many similarities with a dog thus, Wanko-chan. Imagine my disappointment when she was incapable of coming up with an equally clever appellation for me.”

“Bite me Kuso.”

You rolled your eyes though in the dim lighting you were sure no one noticed. Sagara, Tadakuni and Kyousuke had long since sent you a message affirming that they were safe and so was the loot. That was good. It gave you something to look forward to, something to help you ignore where you currently were.

“Dear are you alright?” Asuka must have felt your anxiety through your hand.

“I’m fine, I just,” you brushed some sweat off, “I just don’t like tunnels too much.”

“Do not worry dear, I am here for you.”

You only squeezed her hand in thanks.

“Will you two knock it off, I swear this is the tunnel love or some shit,” Toshino Kyouko complained.

“Can we please just focus on getting out of here?” you spoke before they stopped to settle their difference with body language.

“Yeah, yeah, this way.”

[1/2]
>>
>>32170323
It wasn’t too bad you thought. They walls didn’t close in, the shadows didn’t jump out at you and your every step was not treacherous. As long as you felt Asuka’s hand you just took it one step at a time. You definitely did not have a problem with dark tunnels. Still it felt like ages until you felt the fresh night air on your skin.

“Right I’m going this way, I have a week right?” Toshino Kyouko asked.

“Let us not deceive ourselves here Wanko-chan. We all know you are incapable of accruing that amount of wealth in such a short amount of time,” Asuka spoke, “You might want to acquaint yourself with the idea of indentured servitude.”

Toshino Kyouko only snorted and left.

The time is now night, the weather is cool and the date may change within the hour.

Apparently Sagara, Tadakuni and Kyousuke had been waiting for you at a safe spot as provided by THIEF. It was in a familiar bar that you had been to once before. That’s why when you arrived you were greeted with a cheer from your three accomplices as well as Toulour who only adjusted his glasses.

Your first action is to,

“I’ll have whatever my friends are having,” you ordered a drink.

You were given a flute of bubbly champagne. Fitting, you thought before enjoying the drink.

“Right lads, how much did we bag?” you inquired.

“Well at the final count you scored 10,527,435 JPY,” Toulour adjusted his glasses, “Split between the five of you that’d be 2,105,487 to each of you. Chump change all told.”

“Thank you Toulour,” Asuka sat down at the counter.

You joined her as your friends started to divvy up the prize.

“Well we aren’t exactly doing it for the money in the first place,” you replied.

“Then you would not complain when I combine my share with yours will you?” she asked.

“Not really but are you sure about that?”

“It is as Toulour says, this amount is ‘chump change’ to me,” she replied, “I believe this money will go straight to that offshore account of yours will it not?”

It didn’t sound much like a question to you. Well it made sense so you didn’t see a reason why not. You could transfer it out later anyway.

“So what now?” Sagara asked, “I mean the money is all good and everything but we’re not career criminals are we?”

“No, you’re not,” Toulour answered, “Not yet anyway.”

“I think I may have found my calling,” Tadakuni admitted.

“No you haven’t, you’re just drunk,” Kyousuke told him.

“Still the question about my capabilities has been answered,” Asuka finally said, “The question is, what next O Fearless Leader?”

Obviously everyone would wait on bated breath concerning your decision. They all wanted to know if stealing things for fun and profit was going to be a thing, as it were.

“We could make a life out of this,” you said, “We never going to stop, we get rich, or die trying.”

“Hear hear,” Tadakuni agreed.

“Now that’s what I like to hear,” Toulour added, “If you ever want to move on up in the ladder, just talk to me alright you problem children?”

His smile was wide and he finally stopped fiddling with his glasses. He got up and disappeared through a door that probably led deeper in to the bar.

“Problem Children has a nice ring to it does it not?” Asuka suggested.

“I could totally get behind that name,” Tadakuni was still enthusiastic.

“Heh, what would Aneue think of us now?” Sagara sighed.

“Nothing good I hope,” you returned with a smile.

“Well then, here’s to us, the Problem Children,” Kyousuke concluded.

“CHEERS!” the five of you raised your glasses.

A long time ago, Asuka had once asked you what you wanted to do with your life. Now, you think you’ve found it, something that you could do, something to make a life out of. That’s what you honestly thought. Just deciding, no, just knowing this gave you no small amount of peace. Well your work wasn’t done. This was just the beginning and you already had other jobs lined up, like that one for Sparky. However it wasn’t going to be plain sailing forever. Sagara had said it but Aneue wasn’t going to approve and your friendship, if you could call it that, with Kaoru might be strained. Still, that was a problem for another day. Tonight you were going to rest on your laurels for a bit. As the glasses and the champagne emptied you,

Giving your friends some time you followed Toulour in to the backroom. If his words weren’t an invitation you didn’t know what was. The bartender didn’t move to stop you either so you were probably in the clear here. Then again it looked like it lead to the toilets but that couldn’t be right because you could hear his breathing in one of the stalls. You hoped this wasn’t a bad time.

“No it isn’t. Ask away,” your THIEF contact spoke up, “Best to have something come in while something goes ou.”

That was slightly creepy that he knew it was you, and a little bit disgusting if he wasn’t lying.

“I’m looking for some info on Project Radio Noise,” you started, “Know where I can find some?”

“I do, it’s a pretty old one though so I can just tell you straight up that it involved cloning the third ranked Level 5. It was shutdown, or maybe it was repurposed for something,” Toulour answered, “If want to know more I guess I could set something up. I’m kinda surprised you’re asking me when you’re friends with one of the scientists involved with the project.”

“Nunotaba huh?” you mused, “She wasn’t too happy to talk about it so I could use a second opinion.”

“You didn’t steal the info from her?” he sounded incredulous, “I guess if you’re friends then no. Well I like that, an unprincipled thief can’t ever be counted a professional.”

“Let me think about it okay?”

“Sure, sure. Just give me a call and we’ll deliver ASAP. Lining up a job that could be right up you alley might take a few days though, sound good?”

“What about my friends?” you wondered, “What do you consider them now?”

“They are part of your crew so they’re your responsibility. As long as you keep acting as the face then they’re under the same rules as you are, with the same benefits too if they want to go solo.”

Your conversation, and other business, done, you walked out to a scene of your male friends slumped over the counter top.

“They really are light weights aren’t they dear,” Asuka’s face was flushed.

“Dare I ask?”

How were you even going to haul the lads back home? Or Asuka for that matter. Aneue was going to kill you now, if Lord Kudou didn’t do it first.

“No, I have not even started on the main course,” she pointed at you.

“Right, let’s get everybody home,” you sighed.

As you carried everyone home you wondered what book to read tonight?
