You stand beside your comrades Maurice, Pietra, and Kor, overlooking a valley deep in the southern jungle, nestled between two enormous mountain ranges. Beneath you, raising up from the earth are three pyramids that stand firm, over what you have come to learn has been millenia of neglect. They crumble here and there, but the builders who imagined them were truly skilled, and crafted them to stand the test of time. In one of these temples you believe will be the answer to the mystery revealed to you by the Lovers card, and hopefully the whereabouts of Annalise.

Maurice approaches you from the side. "There is a dark presence down there, sir. Something hateful and glutenous. If we go, we must take the utmost care."

You tell the others that you don't plan on charging headlong into danger without a bit more thought. Maurice seems relieved, but Pietra not so much. The four of you gather round and begin thinking on your plan of action.

You decide to split into four and come at the area from all sides, in hopes that you won't be surrounded yourselves. You break in half, heading around the east side with Pietra as Maurice and Kor go west. You split again, and make it to the complete other side alone before stopping. Here, you can barely make out the others as small specs in the distance, but with some strain, you can spot everyone signalling that they are in position and ready. You begin moving inward, not yet drawing your broken sword. As you walk, you look at the pyramids towering above you. From the furthest one, near Maurice, you begin to notice what seems like steam rising.

>>
>>32164326
You pick up speed, and judging by the increase in size, you assume the others have picked up on this and done the same.

The steam from the top of the pyramid is now condensing into a heavy cloud. It darkens and rolls in place, as if kneaded by a pair of great vinisible hands.

You are within shouting distance of the others now, and the cloud begins descending to the ground, clearly moving of some unknown will. Maurice stops and draws his cards, shuffling through them in anticipation.

>>

You shout for the others, and tell them to move to help Maurice with whatever seems to be happening. If they can hear you, they don't signal as much, but they do all begin approaching him at a good pace.

The cloud ceases it's descent, and now begins to spread out above you, just ten feet up, but thick and dark as any storm cloud you've seen. It's so heavy in fact, that it provides as much shade as a stone rooftop. You make it beneath the spreading cloud in time to witness something emerge from a crack in the side of the nearest pyramid, and begin dashing at impossible speeds toward Maurice.

Unfortunately, just as you near him, the shade that emerged from the pyramid reaches Maurice and drives something sharp up and through his chest. The deck of cards falls, fluttering to the ground as Maurice is raised up and tossed aside. You come to a halt and look over the attacker.

It appears to be a large man, just over six feet and dressed in tribal clothes made from leather, dyed wool, and feathers. He is muscular and stoic, holding out an arm that is covered in fresh blood. He watches as Maurice hits the dirt, hard, and then turns to you.

Come then, I will take your blood by force, if you wish." It is now that you realize things have been slowly darkening around you. You focus power into your sword, as you have done so many times before, and raise a shining golden shield that defends you from the point blank attack. Madon drives his arm down at you, and it collides with the shield.

First, his skin burns and rips away, then the bone of his arm turns to ash as it collides with the shield of light. Only when the magic has eaten up to his elbow does Madon realize what is happening, and retreat from you, fast as a hare. You get back up and bare your sword, watching as he sheds uncharacteristic tears over his now burnt and bloody stump.

"Gah! You wretched human! Urgh! You would dare to scar me like this!? I will consume you whole!" Madon bares his teeth, which suddenly appear numerous and sharp. He lets out a high pitched screech that rings in your ears as he comes at you again.

Too fast, in fact, and you receive a powerful blow to the stomach which lifts you off your feet. You roll onto your stomach and right yourself quickly, staring up at Madon as blood begins to spurt from his injury.

"Your brothers thought themselves intimidating as well. Allow me to give you the same greeting I gave them when they tried to sear me with magics." Madon raises a hand to the cloud cover, and you see thin bands of lightning begin to dance through the clouds overheard. They swirl and gather above him as he seems to strain for their attention.

Lightning radiates from the point of impact, spreading out in all directions, and finally coming to meet your planted feet. It runs up your back, paralyzing you and causing you unbelievable pain before dispersing again into the air and allowing you to crumble onto the ground, twitching against your will.

You plant one foot and bring your sword up to meet Madon as the spell finally fades. You cut through the shield, and deliver a powerful slash to his midriff, shattering the steel. It breaks in the same spot that it was bitten and cracked earlier, in the brawl in the middle of the tavern. Despite the hit being direct, there is no blood or even a mark where you hit Madon. You look up and see him grinning through rows of sharp teeth, smug in his minor victory.

"Mortal steel is worthless against my flesh. Even your comrades knew as much. Now, become my blood!" Madon grabs you by the collar and lifts you up, attempting to take a bite our o the side of your neck.

You feel confident in as much for a moment, up until he reaches his remaining arm out and catches the incoming fist. In one fluid motion, he latches his hand onto Kor's wrist and swings her in a wide arc, then releases her, sending her flying toward you. In your stunned state, you have no choice but to take her full weight upon you, knocking you both back into the dirt. Kor lands atop you, but is quick to regain her feet. You question the man as you ride the boulder over the hills.

"The person, or close enough I suppose, who's supposed to be tending all these fields is not. Doing that. Tending the fields. Sorry, I'm still pretty new to the whole 'wise words' thing. The point is, he's not here and the whole place is going to shit because of it." You ask about him.

"Me? I guess I'm a god now. Never was sure of exactly how that works, but I've got some handy powers and my lady love doesn't mind me having unconquerable stamina. It's a cushy gig, if you don't mind the prayers. Always in your head, especially at harvest time. I'm sure I had a name at some point, but nobody bothers to use it do don't worry."

You accept the deal. The man reaches his hand down, and you shake on the deal.

The world around you begins to quake wildly, throwing you to the ground. The man seems to have no trouble balancing on the boulder, but steps down anyway. He kneels beside you in the dirt and grabs your hand, holding it between both of his.

"I don't know how long this will last, but it should be more than enough to get you out of trouble for now. Good luck, and try not to die. It hurts pretty bad."

There is a minor pain in your chest as you struggle to stand, but more intense is the burning sensation running up your left arm. You look down and see that it is engulfed in golden flames.

You tell Pietra to help Maurice away from the pyramids, stating that you'll treat Kor further away and get some rest. She agrees, before looking up, surprised. You turn to see what shocked her.

Another unknown man, wearing little but a loincloth, sandals and feather headdress stands over the resting form of Madon. He kneels down and lifts him up, examining him before turning to you.

"I'm shocked, humans. You've managed to incapacitate Madon without a single casualty. Well done. But you should have finished the job, and spared him the shame of defeat." The new man places a hand on Madon's bare chest and drives his fingertips into his flesh slowly. It's as though he were shoving them into jam.

Madon regains consciousness and begins letting out wild screams of agony, and in a moment you realize why. His body shrivels like a raisin in the sun, and shrinks down, slowly consumed by the new man. Once nothing remains but empty clothing, he tosses the leather vest away and looks up at the cloud cover.

"Madon's spell will dissipate soon. I must hide myself for now, but rest assured that as soon as night falls, I will emerge to consume the rest of you." He turns away and heads back to the pyramid.

You enter the pyramid with the others. The only entrance seems to be the same crack in the stone work that Madon exploited to attack you earlier. It is a fairly large flaw, but even so you can't seem to squeeze through due to your armor. Maurice makes it, Pietra is nearly cat-like in her ability to maneuver, and even Kor is able to squeeze in like so much dough through a press, but steel isn't as friendly. You and the others think for a minute.

After some inspection, you think that the top of the pyramid must also have a way in, but it would likely lead to a different area all together. The group leaves it to you to decide the immediate course of action.

You decide to go through the easier entrance together, to minimize risk. The others agree, and thus begins the ascent of nearly eight-hundred stairs.

The climb starts off simple. You ascend up step after step, noting that they seem to have been built with a much shorter person in mind. After a minute or two, you are nearly halfway up, but at that point, you notice something odd. Five minutes after beginning the climb, the top is still quite far away. You look back at the others, who begin catching up, as they should, and decide it's only the stairs playing tricks on your mind. You continue climbing.

Ten minutes must pass before you stop again. You're getting nowhere, and now you're sure of it. You look back, and the others, with the exception of Kor are gone. You look all around, and spot them climbing completely different sides of the structure, staring dreamlike into the distance without actually thinking. You call to Pietra, who snaps out of the trance, and realizes that you've been separated. Maurice comes to attention to.

"How did this happen? I swear I was just looking at your- well I was looking right at you?" Pietra begins to worry, and Kor crosses her arms nervously.

"It's a trick if ever there was one, sir. But I don't sense an illusion at work. It seems one of our enemies has managed to ensnare us without us even knowing."

You stop and tell everyone to put their heads together. There must be a way to break the illusion, if you just think and look for clues. Any seam is a place you can tear through.

As you do this, you feel an odd shift in weight. The pyramid begins to turn, nearly throwing you off. Luckily, Kor grabs you by the wrist and digs her own hand into the stonework. The entire structure flips upside down, and you get a look at a new landscape. An endless green void, slightly nauseating. Pietra and Maurice are no longer on other sides of this pyramid, but other pyramids all together. Pietra begins panicking, breathing rapid and shallow as her pyramid rotates in mid-air. Maurice is holding up well, but his pyramid seems to be orbiting yours.

"Ah! Somebody help, I want to get off! I'm gonna be sick!" Pietra screams, clinging to the side of the structure with her eyes shut tight. Kor declares that you should each continue heading for the top of your respective pyramids, and Maurice agrees as he comes into speaking range.

Er, It's more like the bottom now, isn't it...I think I can keep using the cracks in the stone, but your gloves aren't gonna let you. They're too bulky. Hey! You use your teeth to remove your right glove, pulling the straps loose and yanking it off by the middle finger. You release it, and it goes tumbling into the void, disappearing into endless green. Kor carefully helps you switch hands to do it with the other glove, and soon you're ready to climb. She grunts as she tosses you up toward the inverted pyramid, and you do your best to drive your fingers into the cracked stone. Immediately you feel pain as you scrape your knuckles, but you do hold tight. Kor begins moving down acrobatically, with you following carefully.

In a few minutes, you manage to make it to the top-bottom. Kor swings in. Luckily the place did have a small roof, which now serves as a floor. You follow, falling to your knees and examining your cut and scraped hands. They are bleeding quite a bit, and Kor comes over to look at them.

"Oh, poor baby. Your skin is so delicate. Want me to take point for a while?" Kor doesn't seem to intend to mock, but it does sting a bit.

You let Kor lead, but not without a snarky comment. She throws her head back and takes up the posture of a refined lady, or at least what she believes it to be.

Kor looks up at what was perhaps some sort of well before the flipping of the pyramid. A hole in the stone, five feet across, leading into darkness. She hops up and grabs onto the ledge, pulling herself up.

"It's really dark in here. Cmon, grab my hand!" A long, dark hand reaches out for you.

You position yourself beneath Kor and leap up with all your might, slapping a hand into hers. It stings terribly as Kor begins hoisting you up into the pyramid with her, and you need a moment to ease the pain before you can continue on. Before you can fully recover, however, something happens. Torches lining the walls inside begin lighting of their own will. You and Kor look around, and spot someone on the roof-floor. Seated upside down like a bat, on a bloody alter, is a man dressed in a vibrant cloak. His clothes don't fall naturally, and in fact they behave as though the pyramid were still right side up. He looks at you, pulling back his hood to reveal a thin face, covered completely in odd tattoos and paint.

"Greetings, human male and female. I am known as Boiz. While my brothers are busy devouring your friends, I have been tasked with tenderizing you. If you would like to surrender now, I would be very much obliged."

You propose instead his own surrender, with the promise that you'll only beat him to near death. He doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor.

"Nonsense. You only killed Madon because he was weak and arrogant. I on the other hand know my limits, and after watching you fight, I know exactly how to kill you. Furthermore, you are both without any reliable means of harming me. It is best for everyone if you simply lay down and allow me to feed. It will be relatively painless." Boiz stands up from the altar and begins untying his cloak.

You threaten Boiz, though there is little melee combat to be done from this distance. Boiz doesn't seem amused. He drops his cloak, revealing a set of clothes made from hide and feathers, like his comrades. They consist mostly of long pants, slippers, and wristguards but nothing else. He then reaches into a pocket and produces a large silver coin. Again ignoring gravity, he flips it with his thumb and forefinger.

Suddenly the room seems to flip around without moving. You feel something pull you up, or down, to the floor, or roof. You try to right yourself, and end up landing on your stomach. Kor manages to land upright, like an agile cat, but she still appears nervous.

"I control every aspect of this room, as well as the pyramid. I control up, down, light, dark, everything. You cannot hope to harm me when you can't even reach me." Boiz flips the coin again, sending you up to the roof, then again, and again. Each time you crash on your back or stomach, and even Kor has trouble landing properly.

Your dexterity does no betray you, and the brick chunk collides with the coin, sending it flying away from Boiz. You land hard on the ground, and get back to your feet. You and Kor right yourselves and face off against Boiz, who seems legitimately surprised at your quick wit.

"That was clever, human. But it won't be enough to save you. Fight me then, since you're so set on dying." Boiz spreads his arms out, welcoming you to try for a strike.

You taunt Boiz a bit more. He smirks this time, although you aren't sure which emotion this suggests. You watch him a while longer.

"If you don't wish to make the first move, then I will. Prepare yourself." Boiz lowers his arms and reaches into his pocket again. This time he draws out a small knife, a letter opener, really. He tosses the blade back and forth between his hands in a slow rhythm, and you find your eyes drawn to its motion. Suddenly he stops, and raises it. You prepare to dodge, but the knife never comes.

Boiz stabs at his own wrist, slicing across his arm and letting blood flow freely. There is a sudden and harsh pain in your arm. You look down and see blood escaping from your sleeve now. You look back to Boiz. He stabs himself in the thigh next, and Kor falls beside you. Blood trickles from both of their left legs. You kneel down beside her, and look up as Boiz raises the knife to his throat. The injuries he gave himself are gone, though the evidence of them remains. Yet, you still bleed.

"One good swipe and one of you dies. I will heal in no time, full strength, but as far as I know, humans don't have such a power. If you surrender here, I will allow your female to leave, though I cannot promise the actions of my brothers. Turn yourself over, human male, and buy your friend another chance."

You raise a hand in surrender as Boiz plays with the knife by his throat. You stand, and as you do, you bite down hard on your lip. You draw some blood, but Boiz himself seems unaffected. His spell doesn't work the other way around, it seems.

"Stop! We can beat him, we just need a plan!" Kor halfheartedly begs you to not give up, but you can hear the fear in her voice. Boiz has you in a corner. He begins playing with his knife, tracing the blade across his face, making light but stingingly painful cuts. Across twice, and down thrice, creating a hash in your skin that mirrors his. He laughs as blood slowly trickles down.

You come to a sudden realization here. Boiz cut himself five times, but when you raise a hand to your face, you only feel four.

You deliver a line that sounded much better in your head, and begin listening, smelling, and feeling for anything out of place. Boiz continues to toss his back and forth, pricking himself now and then. You notice now that none of the cuts seem to be in places covered by armor. This solidifies your idea.

Suddenly Kor cries out, and there is a loud smash. You turn around and see her hand buried a few inches in the stone brick of the pyramid floor. She seems to be gripping something, but it's unclear.

You drive a bloody fist into his face, and feel the bones in your hand crack as if you had struck stone. Boiz uses his palm to push the small knife into your shoulder, and kicks you hard, sending you sliding across the stone floor. You try to get back up, but then you feel the world flipping upside down again, only this time there is no coin. You slam into the roof, and look up as Boiz approaches you from above.

"I will say you're quicker on the uptake than your dead friends, but even that won't be enough. I'm tired of playing with you, and so now I will end this game and take my leave." Boiz leaps down from the roof, fangs bared, ready to strike.

Something comes at you from the side. You turn quickly to see it, and the room is engulfed in a flash of white light. You fall backward and roll, totally disoriented. When you open your eyes again, Boiz is pressed up against the far wall alongside another who seems his identical twin. They writhe in pain as their flesh smokes and bubbles. You look across the room to see Pietra and Maurice. They are bloodied, and Maurice seems to be missing an eye. Pietra herself clearly has a dislocated shoulder, but they are alive, and looking feisty.

She smiles at you, revealing two rows of sharp, jagged teeth. Pietra bites down on your neck, drawing a great gush of blood and causing you to cry out in pain.

The world around you blurs and reconfigures into a dark, torch lit room. You are wrapped up in the thin arms of none other than Boiz, who is busy drinking from your neck. You struggle to free yourself, but your strength is already fading. Finally, he pulls away.
