Hello /tg/! It's Friday, and you know what that means.

You've long awaited a magic duel in our most favorite of game systems, FATAL. Tonight you're going to get it! In the past we've run fully armored knights on foot, unarmored knights on foot, and had a Roman take on the world. This time we'll have a mad sorcerer going toe-to-toe with a witch. The characters are created and ready to go.

The kobold sorcerer Muda is a wretched ball of mental illnesses and depravity. He likes to run around at night burning houses while naked.
The human witch Eufemia is only slightly less mad than Muda. She's nearly blind and has a phobia of beards.

If you guys thought FATAL's standard rules were bad enough, you ain't seen nothing yet. Hop along for the ride! We can all enjoy this trainwreck together.

Here's how this is going to work. We have two spellcasters who use Chaos Magic. We're going to have them cast spells at each other.

There are, broadly, two kinds of spells in their arsenals. One is a ranged attack spell. These range from magic missiles to spells that throw you through a window at 10 miles per hour. The other kind of spell is a touch-attack spell. To apply these to an unwilling target, you have to Brawl with them. Imagine a street brawl where each punch, knee, elbow, and eye gouge that lands on you may make your teeth crooked, make you a cannibal for a week, age you by 10 years, or split your jaw's muscles in two. That's what these spellcasters are able to do.

Whether the combat is resolved at range or up close is up to you guys! You'll be casting the spells.

>>32167183
Yes, I did. He defeated his wife, and then he was killed after he stepped outside his house and tried to fight a Viking.

>>32167242
The kobold does not have those spells. The one in the top left is Ceremonial Magic, not Chaos Magic, so he could never use it. The other three are Earth discipline spells, and our kobold pyromanic has access only to Fire spells. I believe he has more than enough to make up for it. You'll see in a minute.

Warning: These are the characters' FULL STATS.

Eufemia Umfreville-Braose: http://paste2.org/VDnNKI5X
Muda Hiawang: http://paste2.org/11xC5Y22

Like its combat system, FATAL's magic system is vaguely like D&D's. Spells are numbered in levels from 1 to 10. Spellcasters may gain new spells as they level up. Each spell may have ingredients, a ritual, and a chant that goes along with it. These chants and ingredients may be quite ridiculous. The rituals may be even more so.

Casting spells drains Magic Points, or MP. The time it takes to cast a spell depends on its level, your Enunciation sub-attribute, and any skill points you've invested into mastering that specific spell.

You have to say a spell's chant each time you cast the spell. If you mess up the chant, you get a random magical effect. If you use incorrect ingredients, you get random magical effects. If you don't perform the ritual correctly, you'll get a random magical effect. See a pattern here? Screw up you spellcasting, and nobody knows what's going to happen! It's on you to make sure that does not (or does) happen.

In the character sheets you will see each spell in their grimoires and what it takes to cast them. I will post them all for you.

Up first is the young and beautiful* 17-year-old human witch Eufemia Umfreville-Braose. She and her husband - whom she is happily married to - have a gig where they go to villages posing as refugees, then stay for a while to hunt spellcasters hiding in the village. They have eliminated two spellcasters this way. Unfortunately for her, her husband isn't around tonight, so she has to take on a magical arsonist by herself.

She has access to the Earth, Fire, and Ether spell domains. 1/3

*Little above average really. Nice face and body but she doesn't move or speak very well.

Both.

Your character may be able to speak more quickly than you. But you, its player, have to verbally say the chant correctly for the spell to work.

That's it for Eufmeia's grimoire. These are all the spells she has available! I'll let you guys stew it over for a while.

Listen up! If you screw up the chant, the MP invested in the spell is wasted and we will roll for a Random Magical Effect. But if the chant is between 90% and 99% correct, the rules say the spell still goes off, but you still roll for a Random Magical Effect.
If you then screw up the chant in the same way, you will get the same random effect.

In this way you can experiment with your spells. But beware! Each time you roll on the Random Magical Effects chart, you have a 1-in-2000 chance of accidentally casting Fatal and killing all life on the planet. The gods would not take mercy on your soul.

Next up is Muda, and I suspect he will be the crowd favorite. We created this character a while back in a FATAL Friday thread. I modified his stats and spell selection a bit and here he is.

Muda was raised a slave in a cult down in the Southern Queendoms, where he was taught sorcery by an unethical immoral sorceress mistress. Even today he is a slave to her will. She has given him free reign to terrorize local villages, which Muda usually does by lighting buildings on fire with his Meltdown spell.

He has the maximum of four mental illnesses to begin play with. He's terrified of houses and men (one a result of growing up a slave in the Southern Queendoms), yet he is an exhibitionist with pyromania. He does not yet know how to cope with these four simultaneous illnesses preying on his sanity.

Illness 1: domatophobia - Fear of houses or being in a house
Illness 2: exhibitionism
Illness 3: hominophobia - Fear of men
Illness 4: pyromania

Muda has access to only the Fire domain, but this domain includes such spells as cold and electric attacks. Muda is particularly fond of Cryoprobe. His master of the spell is such that he can cast it 4 times per combat round rather than the usual 3.

And there's the last of the grimoire sheets. You now know what all of our combatants' spells do.

If you're new to FATAL, I'll explain the basic mechanics. It has a bad case of "like D&D, but--". The basic game has you rolling 3d10 and trying to get EQUAL TO or HIGHER THAN a target number called a Threshold, or TH. You roll 3d10, apply any modifiers for your sub-attributes or skills (of which there are many), and then you compare it to the roll's TH. This determines success or failure.

In combat, time is divided into Rounds. Each Round is 3 seconds long. Regular weapon attacks can be done once per Round. Brawling attacks, like punches and kicks, can be done twice a round or faster. Combatants roll initiative at the start of each and every Round to see who acts in what order.

The magic system is a bit different. Each spell takes a certain amount of time to cast, depending primarily on its level.. Instead of rolling to see if you get it off, you have to say the spell's chant and your character has to have any necessary ingredients on hand. Finally, if the spell has a ritual, you must perform the ritual as well.

The spells used may call for skill checks, like an Aim roll to aim a magical ray, a Hurl roll to throw fire, or a Brawling roll to touch an unwilling target. Several spells, however, don't have any such way to fail. You cast them, and they work. End of story.

Take for example Muda's Meltdown spell. This magic kills knights. If he casts it, any target he sees will then start suffering 1d100 burning damage (times 1.10 for his Spellcasting (Specific) skill) per round, for 5 rounds. To put that number in perspective, an average human has 20 Life Points (LP). A large being like an ogre or troll tends to have around 50. And, if you're wearing metal plate armor like a knight would, you take double damage from burning effects. It's a very powerful spell.
>>
>>32168932
So, our battle will be really short then? Whoever first casts their no-save spell wins?
>>
>>32169070
Looks like it. FATAL has it all, even caster superiority!
>>

>>
>>32169100
As was said, "like D&D."

>>32169070
I'm pretty sure our battle will be short, but that we won't get any high-level spell off. Because you can spam level 1 spells multiple times per round, it's easy to overwhelm your enemy.

Then again, I thought our first FATAL Fecht of two fully-armored knights would be a lengthy battle where they gradually bash away at each other's armor. How wrong I was! We will see where this goes.
>>
>>32169213
We need to purposefully pronounce spells wrong so we can get random spell effects, which are hilarious.

So, here's the deal.

Our characters will start after Eufemia encounters Muda while investigating a burning building at night. They're outside on the grass and there are numerous windows within a hundred feet of their current location. Muda has a backpack on his back carrying a variety of ingredients -- he probably has what he needs to cast several of his spells. Eufemia has a small pouch that carries some small ingredients.

You guys will control a character, either Muda or Eufemia. You will decide what spells they cast, and you guys will say the necessary chants.

The chants for our spells are given in their character sheets. To determine a Chaos spell's chant, you first roll 1d100. Chaos magic has a 75% chance of requiring a chant, so most spells will need one. Then, you roll 3d10, and subtract the result from 33. This number is the number of characters in your chant. Your chant will have at minimum 3, and at most 30. For each character, you roll 1d100 and find the corresponding syllable on this chart. After you do that, you have your chant! >>32167242

Rolled 17 + 10

Eufemia strolls through a grassy knoll and comes upon the sorcerer Muda! Muda sees Eufemia and the duel is on!

They are this many feet apart. Without getting into the surprisingly extensive movement and Sprinting rules, I can tell you that either person can close the range to arm's reach if they spend one full Round running at their enemy. If the distance happens to be 15 or less, they can cover the distance and make a single 1-second spell or one Brawling attack along with it.

Whether you stay at range or close to melee is up to you guys!

First, we roll initiative! Eufemia has a knife out, and Muda is unarmed, so Muda does not have a Delivery Penalty to his Initiative roll. Breadth (your arm's reach) applies to only the very first Initiative roll of each round.

In this way, a really tall person (high Breadth) wielding a really long weapon (like a spear) will probably be very likely to take initiative over a midget with a knife. The midget would be faster if he ditched the knife, because FATAL is among the most realistic of roleplaying games, having been written by Byron Hall himself.

Eufemia roll 1d100 + 3 Reaction Speed + 30 Breadth - 22 Delivery Penalty, or 1d100 + 11
Muda rolls 1d100 - 6 Reaction Speed + 28 Breadth, or 1d100+22

After this first round we won't count Breadth anymore, so Eufemia will roll 1d100 - 19 and Muda will be rolling 1d100 -6.

To reiterate, Eufemia has a dagger in one hand, and Muda is unarmed. But these guys are wizards. Who needs weapons when you can shoot laser beams out of your hands like Muda can?

Roll me some d100s for initiative! You'll get to decide who you play as after that!

25 + 11 = 36
29 + 22 = >36

Muda will go first this Round, and then Eufemia will go.

Now, you guys have the power. You decide what spells Muda casts or what he does. Look at his sheet for the chants and any necessary ingredients or rituals, and ctrl+f "grimoire muda" for his spells' descriptions.

This shows how long it takes to cast spells based on their level. >>32169548
Because of their Enunciation stats, Muda can cast Cryoprobe (and only Cryoprobe) four times per Round, and Eufemia can cast only two level 1 spells per Round, but otherwise it is as the chart says.

Pick a spell, say its chant, and do it! I might recommend Cryoprobe. Try saying that chant four times fast.

He has failed utterly and has wasted 24 of his 190 MP.

190 - 24 = 166 MP remaining. Watch out, or you'll run out of magical energy!

More importantly, because he failed three times, Muda must roll 3d2000 to find random magical effects.

Get rolling!

You need to roll d2000, not d1000. There are two thousand different random magical effects. I think you can accidentally cast almost any spell in the game through rolling the right result on the table.

You do d1000 IRL the same way you do d100. You roll 3d10. One's a thousands place, one's a hundreds, one's a tens.

FATAL requires you to roll 1d1,000,000 and 1d10,000,000 at points, so just know that each 0 is another d10.

That's right. In Fatal, every time you miscast, you have a 1 in 2000 chance to destroy the fucking world.

Hey, that was actually pretty spot-on. No random magical effect for you!

Eufemia bumps her breast size up from an A to a B. Her clothes become mighty uncomfortable and she gains +15 Bodily Attractiveness, raising her score from 116 to 131, and her Bodily Attractiveness bonus from 9 to 14!

I don't think that affects any skills for this combat but if there's one you want to know about just ask.

That's it for Eufemia's turn.

Now is time for Muda again, except now we have a bladesmith who wants to test his blade on Muda.

To give you an idea of how magic progresses, this is a level 4 spell. You hit someone and they instantly age by 10 years. The level 5 version of this spell is Bestow Century -- it instantly ages the target by 100 years.

The spells eventually get more powerful than that.

This is a level 4 spell so it will take Muda (12 seconds * 0.88 Enunciation = 10 seconds) to cast, so, still 4 rounds.

Eufemia has 4 rounds all to herself. What will she do?

You sneaky fellow, trying to reuse chants. I'll let this work because that recording was for a sample outside the current combat. It's a bit off though, so you'll have to roll on the RME.

I am practicing the chant for Bestow Decade.

>>32172686
That works. After one round you'll be in punching range.

I totally skipped on rolling for initiative this round. Ah well. Muda is stuck doing his casting anyway.

So one round to get to him. Next round, you're up!

Muda casting: 0/4 complete.

Here's how we'll do this. The dice never lie. I will roll to see which of your actions comes first, and then next round we will do the other. Internal Explosion is a level 2 spell, so it takes a full round to cast.
1 = Internal Explosion
2 = Punch him in the face
>>
>>32172808
Eufemia spends the round running at Muda.

>Muda casting: 1/4 complete before this round's initiative.
After that, she casts Internal Explosion! This delivers 2d8 damage. Roll it!

>Muda casting: 2/4 complete before this round's initiative.
In this round you'll decide if you punch him in the face or what have you. But roll that 2d8 first!
>>

>>32172845

Four damage. Great job. Muda farts a bit in response to his innards exploding but he's still in the fight.

Specific modifiers for interrupting spells aren't in the book from what I see (unless you count the regular interruption from damage, which should apply). So I'll say Muda keeps casting.

What will you do now, Eufemia? You have two rounds left to yourself and you are in melee range for your knife or your brawling.
>>
Oh, and one more thing. Roll 1d2000 for a Random Effect for that chant being a bit off.

Although I feel that it makes the best picture to have his internal explosion swell up and have him explode like Cell, you guys are the bosses here, and so we shall do this.

As part of Muda's arson spree, he was told to burn any places of worship he possibly could. Belief in the gods was not among his unethical immoral mistress's interests. Eufemia found Muda tonight by observing the local church suddenly light on fire. When she cast one of her spells, that church became a funeral pyre for hundreds of souls. It just so happens the church was a mile and five feet back from Eufemia's current position. Muda was six feet too close, and about to be six feet under.

Survivors of this incident would remember this as the day of judgement towards witches and kobolds, when the gods' wrath was made real.

Roll 4d100. Four of you, 1d100 each.

It was a Sunday evening. People were worshiping in the church. Suddenly the church caught fire, and falling architecture trapped dozens of people inside. Those who got out were doing their best to clear the blocked exits. And then the gods made their will known.

32+58+41+16 = 147
147 * 10 = 1,470 LP/IP of damage to everything within 1 mile of the church.

Muda's LP:
19 - 4 Internal Explosion = 15
15 - 1,470 Lesser Holocaust = FOREVER USELESS (Book's own words, though admittedly for BPP loss, not LP loss.)

Muda is dead and so are hundreds other people.

Eufemia goes back home. Her husband is already packing their bags. It's time to move on to the next village. "That's three."

And that's about it. Eufemia Umfreville-Braose is the victor!

For a sense of scale, look at these ship stats. The IP listed under B is the Integrity Points of the item when subjected to Burning damage, like Lesser Holocaust. It would have been enough to annihilate any ship of a trireme size or smaller, and severely damage larger ships, possibly enough to sink them.

I suppose Eufemia's husband will notice his wife's larger breasts while on the road.

She gains
16 Internal Explosion * 3 = 48 AP from the experience. Develop Breasts was cast trivially and she didn't actually expend MP for the Lesser Holocaust.

She's currently a level 4 Sorceress (supposed to be level 2 but yeah), so ignoring AP from age and working experience, that puts her at...0.3% closer to the next level.

one thing about chaos magic and cerimonial magic

accoring to developer he wanted to do a mythically accurate game
cerimonial is the mythically acurrate magic, all spells he got from some real life book and dont have random rituals, ingredients.....

then he decided to add his own spells, but this would not be mythically accurate. So he made like this, chaos spells have random ingredients, rituals and words, this to each caster. The idea is that yo cant teaching to other caster how you cast a spell is uselles and thats the reason you cant find those spells on real life books.
>>
>>32181399
one thing I forgot. chaos magic and cerimonial magic have different professions

more
he added all this chaos magic explanation, to be able to have his own spells and still try be sort of mythically accurate.
yet magic (even cerimonial) have amor penalty, a thing that he even said didnt hapened in myths
and if the random magical effect from cerimonial magic, has chaos magic spells if I remember a non mythical stuff
