You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed. When you recovered, you found yourself in an unprecedented world, a backwards world living in fear of the demons you very nearly triumphed against.

You searched for the answers to how such a world came to pass. As you gathered power back around yourself from your demons who had stolen it away, your memories returned slowly. First of Lauren’s prognosis and incompatibility with the transdifferentiation organ. Then, with Matt as the two of you survived yet another suicide, and joined forces to fight back against the military that had betrayed you. Then you found a third memory from the soul of a demon you stole, but did not contract. That your brother killed your wife and left you for dead.

But even with the immense strength you gained from the fire demon, it isn’t enough for you to be certain of victory over your betrayer, as you are barely at half strength. So you turned to your remaining demons. Victoria refused to return her power to you, though you still have her blades. So you turned your attention to finding Scath, and came upon him using your form to sleep with Cyn. Between him and Alice, you learned that Matt had been coordinating all of your allies and using them, waiting for you to return now that he has grown in strength.

Now you stand in the plaza around the statue of the Demon Lords, and a group of guards have confronted you and seem to want to arrest you.

Alright, well, do you have any particular methods of finding the path down?

“Sir, you match the description of a wanted fugitive. You’re going to have to come with us,” the lead guard says as he steps forward with the piece of paper. You glance over at them. The guards are nothing special, just regular men who’ve stayed active. Their combat training is most likely minimal. You look over the paper again, it’d be more accurate to call it parchment really, it’s thick and discolored. With the sun at the current angle, you can see the grains of the paper; it’s certainly not made of wood. Some kind of reed perhaps, but you haven’t seen any reeds.

“What charges are those?” you ask as you start tapping your foot on the ground near a small vent in the cobblestone. You can faintly hear the echoes from beneath the ground, but there’s so much ambient noise you can’t get a clear picture.

“Destruction of property, attempted murder of a soldier of Lyr, assault and kidnapping of a noblewoman, desecration of the High Temple, and conspiracy to commit high treason. Put down your arms and come with us immediately,” the guard responds as his men fan out around you.

You think for a moment and nod. “I guess I did do those things,” you comment as you choose a particular spot in the plaza.

“So you confess?”

“No, but I will do this,” you say before lifting your foot and stomping it into the ground. The shockwave ripples through the ground, knocking the men to the ground and cracking something metal deep beneath you. You hold your ear up for a moment as you drop to the bottom of the crater you made, listening to the metal echo, and zero in on the nearest entrance.

“Guess that’s more charges for you,” you say before sprinting towards the entrance. You disappear before a single one of them can even get to their feet again, and slip into the alleys surrounding the plaza. The entrance is of course disguised, but your impact shook free a bunch of rust and trapped oil, so the scent is unmistakable.

You quickly find a number of broken palettes and crates leaning against the back of a derelict building. You grab hold of them and try to move them, but it seems that they’re actually a disguised door, so you change your grip and rip the whole thing off. The bolts and hinges and chains each take turns snapping apart with the wood, giving you a tangle of broken pieces to toss aside.

There’s a staircase below, not an original Epsilon either, but rotting wood that had been assembled a few years back. You grumble a bit and jump down, planting your hands on either side of the tunnel to throw yourself down without putting any weight on the staircase lest it break.

You hit the bottom of the tunnel, denting the floor, and straighten up as the lights come on. “Oh, interesting,” you say as you see three demi-humans aiming rifles at you. Ad hoc pieces of rubbish, but they can throw a slug.

“Naaf scum!” the ape in the middle shouts. Before you scan say anything back, the kid on the left fires. His barrel wasn’t aligned with you so the round flies uselessly between your legs. Instinct kicks in. Both of Victoria’s blades end up in your hands in the time it takes for you to clear the distance to him. One swipe cuts the gun in half, the next opens his throat.

The other two open fire on you, shouting unintelligible garbage at you. They’re not nearly trained enough though and can’t keep up with you. You run wide, almost running on the walls of the room, and every one of their rounds goes wide. You cut open the Ape’s back, severing his spine, and move to the last one. He tries to pull the trigger on you, but he should be empty.

You don’t bother with your blade and just strike him in the chest with your fist. His ribs practically turn to dust and he flies across the room, but not before reflexively pulling the trigger. There was one bullet left in it, and it rips a whole through your side, painting the wall behind you with black blood and bits of rib. “Fuck,” you groan, clutching your injury as you watch the wolf man fall to the ground, foaming at the mouth and writhing in pain. You don’t even want to imagine what you did to his heart.

You try to close the wound in your side, only to get a gurgling growl from your stomach.

Do we know enough about guns and maintenance that we could somehow fix at least one of them (likely cannibalizing the others for spare parts)?
And how many rounds did they have left?

Maybe, would certainly take a bit of time. You'd have to look around to find their ammunition.

Vote is to raid their supplies

It's probably more that the guns are over 100 years old I imagine

So they are probably better quality then anything we could find in the near future?
Still, I think we should get a massive Berserk-tier sword which is basically just a massive slab of steel.

Then lets take their guns and ammo. I hope at least one of them had a backpack or something. We might want to try fixing one rifle later.

You look around the room you’re in. It appears to have originally been some hovel in Gamma, expanded by tearing down the flimsy walls between the other homes. There are a number of doors, both mundane and blast, leading to different areas of the understructure. But, the men you killed were guarding a number of supplies. You quickly open some of the boxes and bags to see what they contain. You find a number of old bullets, a few dozen, along with a bag of homemade gunpowder and a small bag of primers for recasing. You toss those aside, far too unreliable.

Then you find what you were looking for; dehydrated rations and a gallon of fresh water. The bricks of calories can hardly be called food to a normal person, more of a building material really. You’re not sure what the primary ingredient is, but there’s allegedly real meat and corn packed into every kilogram block. The instructions on the century old food say to soak it in water for an hour to feed a squad of four for half a week. You just bite a hunk of it off, grind it between your teeth, and wash it down with some water. Reminds you of the days before ambrosia.

“The gunshots came from over here!” someone shouts above you.

>>
You toss the rest of the brick into your mouth and pocket the other two they had as you drain the last of the water. You grab one of their guns and sling it over your shoulder as you wipe your lips off. “They’re in the tunnels! They must be below. Come on, we have to catch them now!” the guards shout as you walk over to the blast door. You can hear the thumping of their boots and the rattling of their chainmail as they gather around the entrance.

But they’re hesitant to descend, giving you enough time to dig your fingers under the bottom lip of the blast door. The frame is rusted and tight, so you have to fix your footing and dig your fingers in a bit deeper before you grunt and lift the hundred kilo slab. The entire tunnel grinds and squeaks as you force it up enough to slip under.

Luckily, you manage to slide under the bottom of it and drop it back down before the guards work up the courage to descend. The door slams back into its seat, sealing you in truly total darkness. Beelzebub is close, but deeper still. As you wait for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, you hear four guards descend the wooden steps and start swearing in disgust as they look over your carnage.

You blink your eyes at the darkness. You’re certain you should have your night reflectors by now, but you’re still in complete darkness.

You squeeze your eyes shut and focus Scath’s energy on them. They start watering heavily as you reassemble the reflectors into nerve cells. Soon enough, you start to see a dull red glow, even with your eyes closed. Everything is still fuzzy and you didn’t get the cells lined up quite right, causing strange distortions, but you can see, technically. The infrared receptors are working, but you haven’t used them in years.

Back in the day you put out so much heat that you would nearly blind yourself, but now you have the fire demon’s soul in you. The steel tunnel is reflecting your light back as if you were a flood light. Holding your hand up to shield your eyes only makes it worse until you kill off some of your new receptors so you can take a proper look.

The new tunnel section has been used recently, but there’s still a thick layer of grime on every surface. Someone walked through here a few days ago. You can’t discern any details without proper light, but you can easily navigate the tunnels.

You proceed forward, leaving the guards behind. Several doors and passageways are collapsed or otherwise filled with debris and impassable, but there is one meandering path through all of it that eventually leads you to a ladder down, to the level Beelzebub is on. As soon as you put your weight on the old rungs though, they snap off. Thankfully, the shaft is narrow enough that you are able plant your arms on either side and slow yourself down. You still hit the ground hard enough that you wince though.

“Who is it this time?” The voice is sleepy and terribly drawn out. Even though they are speaking from a far distance away from you, they didn’t bother raising their voice above a whisper. Must be your demon.

“I’m back Beelzebub,” you say as you look around the tunnels. You’re definitely in Epsilon now, most of the tunnels are so small rats would struggle with them. Ancient pipes and cables still string from hook to hook and tunnel to tunnel, covered in spider webs and some kind of grime.

“Is that you, Joshua?” the demon responds, his voice echoing from several different tunnels at once. You had thought it would be a straight access, but doppelgangers love mazes.

“Been a while, hasn’t it?” you say as you start choosing your path as best you can, mapping your choices in your head.

“Has it? All I know is at some point my simulation broke down. Some years passed until Matthew found me and brought me a new one. I’ve been enjoying it ever since. I think I might be old. Older than I should be,” Beelzebub explains as you find a few dead ends. “I can hear your voice, but I can’t see you. Where are you, Joshua?”

“Coming towards you, keep talking so I can find my way through this fucking maze,” you respond before kicking open a grate door.

“I can’t move my body any more. I don’t remember the last time I was able to either. Have you seen Lyrra? She was supposed to bring me a new simulation but she never did,” Beelzebub says, giving you the last hint to finally find his room.

Your demon is decrepit with age. His muscles have atrophied beyond use, his rotting skin is so taught it would probably tear just from being moved, and his fruiting bodies have swelled up and covered his entire torso. You can’t see his head either, the fungus has attached itself to the External Neural Uplink around his skull. There’s light in this room at least, and not all of it is coming from the machine behind him, some of it is sneaking in through the ceiling above.

1/2
>>
“What the fuck happened to you?” you ask as the machine whirrs up and you watch a tube inserted into his back light up with a thin ambrosia. Another tube sucks out a blackened bile and Beelzebub sighs.

“I’ve gotten old.”

"You're knocking on death's fucking door," you say as you walk up to him. He doesn't have the strength to even lift a hand.

"Isn't that what you've always done?"

"Not like this."

"Well, what are you here for?"

“I’m here for my power, the power you took from me when I needed it,” you state. Beelzebub doesn’t move, but manages to make a whistling like noise as he thinks. “Will you give it back?”

“I suppose I could. Though it would likely be the end of my life. It matters little to me though, I’ve lived for eons in the machines your people have provided me. I am old and do not mind this life ending. Perhaps if the Dragon is truthful, I will be given new life, though whatever rebirth I have will surely pale to the fantasies I’ve lived,” Beelzebub explains. Then the machine activates again. You hear a rubber bellows move and Beelzebub’s chest inflates till bile bursts from the pores in his mycelium, then his chest deflates again and the machine chirps happily before squeezing saline into him.

“You’re barely alive right now,” you say as you walk forward and kneel next to him.

“I was only hanging on in hopes that Lyrra would bring me her new simulation. She always made the best. Have you ever seen the mists of Jupiter up close while sipping on authentic Indian tea? I have, and it was bliss for many a year. I fancied myself a bit of a fisherman you know. There were monsters down in those storms, and I had such a nice seat up on Titan.”

If we take his power and he dies then it is over for us too (sooner or later). The corruption will kill us sooner or later.
We need to find another way, I don't know which but we have to. Maybe we need to find Lyrra and her simulation.

Victoria's body is able to sustain itself on it's own, his isn't. You could get him back into action, but it would be a constant drain on your energy rather than a one time expenditure.

66% total power

“Look, I need your power back so that I can kill Matt, but I don’t want to kill you. Not the least of which reasons are it will end up killing me,” you explain as you put your hand on his chest.

“All is fine by me, but if you do leave me alive, I ask that you bring me a new simulation. The real world is dark and boring, and I can’t move my body as freely as a songbird,” Beelzebub says as you pry open his seal. He seems to have a withered grip on it still, but with a slight application of will, the energy breaks free and flows back into you through your arm. The seal on your chest corresponding to the doppelganger lights up as his energy returns to you.

Lights start blinking quickly on the machine and an alarm goes off as you feel his body sag inwards. The change is subtle, but the flesh around his torso seems to wilt until a new transfusion of ambrosia is forced into him.

“Guess I’m not dead quite yet. Maybe I will see Lyrra’s simulation. Do you think you could bring it to me next time you see her?” he asks.

Beelzebub, the doppelganger was fourth demon to be bound (10% total power, 10% accessed) This binding is primarily to minimize the downsides of the other bindings. Provides increased resistance to mental illusions. Prevents scar tissue from forming and expedites proper healing. The apathy also tempers Akab’s influence.

Figured you may want my notes on the matter

You stand up from your withered demon as you watch him reactivate his ENU. His breathing is too weak for him to carry a conversation anymore, so there is nothing left for you to do here. You look up at the ceiling, thinking about the city above. Victoria is up there, but she’s the only demon you can call upon for power. The Dragon and Akab are distant from you, but their power is great.

You clench your fist and assess yourself. Thanks to the power given by the fire demon, you should be stronger than Matt should be. The Dragon wouldn’t have contracted with him, but Alice did say that he increased his strength somehow. Without knowing how though, the only thing you can do to prepare is increase your own strength. But no matter how strong you are, you won’t be assured of victory with Victoria’s weapons, you need your own weapons, ones made to utilize all of your strength. You need your sword.

Alice mentioned that you were in the water filtration system, the filters retrofitted to recycle all the water draining into the central reservoir and distill it to be potable for the people living inside the Annihilation Wall. For you to have been put in it means you must have been in a reserve tank of some sort, and as you recall you near UNAAF headquarters when you confronted Matt. He couldn’t have carried you far after downing you, so there are very few places you could have been. And all of them should be reachable by the maglev system.

The room Beelzebub is in is a small hub of pipes and tunnels, and there is just enough light for you to see the faded signs pointing to the transportation system. You leave the old demon behind and make your way over to the transport tunnels. With the state of the sub structure, you don’t expect anything to still be working, but as soon as you step foot on the loading dock, you can feel the electricity in the rails. A cloud of dusty air rolls over the station and you step back from the edge as a single train car slides to a stop in front of you and opens its door.

“It’s good to see you again Dear,” Lyrra says from static ridden and disused speakers, but the voice is unmistakably your wife’s. “The two of us should have a talk, if you wouldn’t mind stepping in.”

“Cut it with the voice duplication,” you growl at the AI.

“Can’t, sorry. I had to purge any unneeded cores to maintain minimal functionality. You’ll have to bear with it. I thought you would like to hear your wife’s voice though. It’s been a very very long time since you’ve seen her. You weren’t a very good husband to her, you know? What kind of man abandons her like that?” Lyrra asks and you throw Victoria’s blade straight through the speaker, cutting it off. A moment later, the station speakers start working so she can keep talking. “Rude. Now are you going to come see me, or what?”

And that's thread. I'll archive in a moment. Comments? Next thread Tuesday maybe.
>>
>>32187375
Purging stuff to maintain even minimal functionality? Sounds like AI had it rough too.
>>
>>32187375
Beelze was quite a surprise, poor fella can't enjoy the real world anymore.
Plz no more puzzle...

Can we raid Matt's palace? I bet we'll find interesting stuff in there, i promise i won't vote to kill any of his contracts.
>>
>>32187673
Oh there will be more puzzle. Even when you may not realize it is a puzzle

Going to Matts place would require going to Naaf
>>
>>32187760
So, we already done a few of them.

No problem, how far is Naaf ?
>>
>>32187375

neat thread, poor beel
>>
>>32188096
You've actually missed most of them I think.

I put more thought into the things that happen than you give me credit for I think
>>
So, you have my attention for question answering if you have any.

Also, sorry for going "Oh, you want your sword? Too bad, someone else needs your attention"

I'm not going to post more updates, but I think I can churn out Beel's memory fragment tonight
>>
>>32188719
how stronk is matt now scale 1-10
>>
>>32188741
As I've said before, he's like 60% of your total power. To your present knowledge. You have to find out first hand if that has changed
>>
>>32188786
Gonna need bigger guns. Also going to need to kick the dragon in the face till he starts spilling.
>>
>>32189394
You are much weaker than the Dragon. But you'll only need bigger guns if you believe Alice.
>>
>>32189451
>Much weaker

Of course but I don't think the dragon would react too badly to getting kicked in the face a few times and even if Alice is lying bigger guns are always better. If we could find a sniper rifle or something I would be a happy man.
