LATE AS ALWAYS!

You are Anthony Grant and you are standing in front of a shop with no sign, Lilac's shop, assuming she's telling the truth. She's probably not, the lying bitch. She's probably not even an engineer! She can't even make a steam engine! You don't have time for this, you need to find a blacksmith, one that's actually competent.

You turn and begin walking back to the inn. Ambrosis, creator of the steam engine; that's what they'll call you! You'll be famous and rich and you'll get all the bitches. At least until someone finds a way to get out of the game.

You enter the inn and proclaim, “I need a blacksmith!”

Only one person is still awake. An elf named Tabula from the guild <49erS>. He raises his hand.

“You!” You exclaim, “I need buckets!”

He looks around, and then back to you. “Okay.”

You begin nodding to yourself. Everything is coming together.

“How many do you want?”

You ponder the question a moment. If one bucket pushes one piston, logically more buckets means more pistons, and more pistons means more power.
>>
>>32187052
“How many do you have?” You ask.

“Three?” He says with a shrug.

“I'll take all three!”

He shrugs again. “Okay.” Three iron buckets appear on the table in front of him.

“How much do I owe you?”

“Just take'um. Iron's everywhere. I doubt anyone'll actually pay more than a couple gold for them. Last I checked, the iron used to make'um's worth more than the bucket's themselves.”

You take up the buckets. “Woe, thanks a lot.”

He shoos you away. “Nothin' to thank me for. They were just takin' up inventory space.”

“I see.” You pause, “Can you also make pistons?”

“Pistons?”

“Yeah. Pistons. Like, you know, the kind you'd find in a steam engine.”

“Steam engine?”

“Yeah. I'm trying to make one. Think you can help me make the parts?”

“You entering the race?”

“Maybe.”

“Well, if you are, I'll make you everything IF you give me half your winnings.”

“How do you know I'll win?”

“Because the last guy's idea was to just make a really big bike. I might not be a scientist, but I'm pretty sure steam train beats big ass bike every time.”

[ ] “Deal.”
[ ] “Hell no. If I win, the reward is mine.”

He thinks for a moment. “Alright,” He concludes, “It's a deal.”

The two of you shake hands to seal the deal.

“So,” Tabula asks, “How are we gonna make this thing?”

“Well, we're gonna need somewhere to keep the water. Somewhere to keep the coals. Some pipes to put the steam into the pistons. The pistons themselves. Some wheels. Some of those... things. You know, those things that the pistons push that moves the wheels? Those things.” You think some more, “Somewhere for the driver to sit.” You start thinking some more, “OH! Brakes. Those things are important, oh, and a way to steer! That's also important.” You nod to yourself.

“So, how big are we making this thing?” The elf asks.

“As big as it needs to be.”

“And we're pretty much making a steam powered car?”

[x] Train all the way.

Although it makes little sense from a practical perspective: that you want something to go fast, so it is a bad idea to be heavier and bigger, it makes perfect sense from the rule of cool perspective.
>>
>>32187649

It can take a ton of damage though, and will have far more operational endurance than the other competitors.
>>
>>32187665
True. And where we are going, there will be no one left in the race except us.

Can we just train coyote on the rest of the comeptitors?

Other people brings bikes and race cars to the race.

We bring a tank of death. A steam tank of death. Hopefully with the option of a large magical cannon for the mages to use.

Then we steamroll wildlife with it after the race.

The landers are going to be so scared.

Yeah, might as well not halfass this.

>>

>>
We should probably consider this steam tank a prototype, which means it'll have a simple ballista rather than a cannon and have fairly light armor to give it speed.

So a light steam tank, really.
>>
Tanks are pretty slow though, we'd have to abuse the terrain or eliminate the other racers to win instead of relying on raw speed. Do we know what the course looks like?

However, if our steam engine can power a MBT, then go for it.

All this hype is distracting me from writing, not that I mind it.

“I was thinking more of a train you can steer.” You say, “With tank treads!”

“Tank treads?”

“Yes! There's a lot of unstable terrain out there. Tank treads are the only way to be certain.”

“That makes sense.”

“And a big cannon on the top!”

“So, what you really want is a steam tank?”

“Yes! That's even better!”

“Don't you think this's going a bit overboard?”

“If by overboard you mean fucking awesome, then yes. Yes I do.”

Tabula remains silent.

“First thing is first.” You say, “We need a boiler and some pistons. Maybe start off small for prototyping. A bucket of water, a cover, and a piston.”

The elf shrugs, “Well, better than the bike, I suppose.”

“Damn straight!”

The two of you get to work. By the time the sun rises you have a bucket with its top covered by a pipe which wraps around and ends with an opening currently covered by a piston. You put the bucket into the hot coals of forge in Tabula's workshop. You rub your hands together.

“This is the future, Tabula.” You say.

“Looks more like the past.” He responds, “But I know what you mean.”

You can hear the water begin to boil.

Suddenly the piston goes shooting out, a huge burst of steam following it.

“Well I'll be damned.” Tabula says.

“Told you it worked.” You reply.

The elf adjusts his glasses. “What's next?”

“We get this thing to turn a wheel.” You say, “One step at a time. It's one of the fundamentals of programming.”

“What are the other fundamentals?”

“When you have a problem, talk to a rubber duck before asking for help.”

He gives you a very peculiar look.

The piston is soon attached to a metal bar, which is affixed to a wheel.

You spin the wheel manually to make sure the piston goes back into the pipe, which it does.

Perfect.

Tabula can hardly stay awake, but he stays to see this experiment through.

The water boils.

The steam builds.

Finally the piston shoots out, spinning the wheel, and the piston goes back into the pipe.

Then nothing.

The steam builds up again until the piston shoots out once more.

Then nothing again.

You remove the mechanism form the coals. “It's losing too much steam, but it works.”

“Mhmm.” You half-asleep elf respond. “More testing tomorrow.” He yawns loudly and gets up. “I'm going to sleep. Don't burn down my house while I'm asleep.” He heads upstairs to where you assume his bed is.

You get up as well and wonder what to do next.

Wait, this could actually be revolutionary.

So assume the piston has two states - compressed and extended. The lever would swtich between the two. Further assume that this switching generates more power than it takes to switch the lever (cause magic, fuck you).

What we'd need then isn't a classic steam engine, we'd need something more like a steam computer that would flip levers in sequence to generate propulsion.

In terms of competition, we should be aware that there are many fast monsters people can harness into a faster-than-horse carts.

I come back from a walk and you guys are building a steam train tank. You glorious bastards...

>>
>>32189154
Railguns are nothing more than magnetized chambers that fire out magnetized objects with a different charge best I understand it.
In theory you could fashion a crude rail cum with a lightning elemental, some copper wiring and a few other basic parts. It would most likely not be very effective though.

Shep; what class is the elf?

It'd probably be easier to just use class skills. Hell, they already have one that fires bullets out of a summoned elemental without having to go through the trouble of building something around it.

Why settle for just steam?

We can make a hybrid steam/electric engine setup. Going off the steam computer idea, it'd make sense to have someone "use" the computer. The way i picture it, we put a system of turbines between the steam engine and the tank treads. The turbines generate electrical energy from the movement of the tank, we feed that energy into a room in the tank built to house both a lightning elemental and the levers operating the steam computer.

You decide that you should probably check on Judicature. You travel back to the inn. There are not many awake before noon, so you find only a handful of people there, but no one you know. You travel up the stair and step in front of your own room before you realize that you are not here for sleep.

You turn around and head for Judi's room.

Knock knock.

“Hello?” You hear Judi ask from inside.

“Can I come in?” You ask in response.

“Okay.” She responds.

You open the door. There she is, sitting on her bed.

“I didn't wake you, did I?”

“No. I've been awake for a while.”

“Then why are you still here?”

She fidgets and looks away, “I just... did not feel like doing anything.”

“Well, since you're not doing anything I need your help with something.”

She looks back, “W-what do you need me to do?”

“I need you to drive my steam tank to victory.” You put an arm around her and point to the horizon. “With you at the helm, our steam tank will beat out any big ass bikes!”

“Bikes?”

“Yes! Even the biggest of bikes will find themselves wanting in the presence of your steam tank! That is why you must enter the race with the steam tank I built!”

“O-okay.”

“Good! Now let us go and register for the race!”

Your turn around and open the door to leave.

“Umm.” You hear behind you. “Can't I just.” A pause. “Stay here?”

“Why?” You ask turning around.

“Because,” She pauses. “I just don't feel like going outside.”

“Why?”

“It's.” She goes silent.

“It's?”

She mumbles something.

“What?”

“I'm embarrassed.”

You feel confused. “Embarrassed of what?”

“Of people seeing me.”

You think on it for a while. “Didn't I already tell you no one cares?”

“Yeah, but-”

“Do I need to go track down that dog and ask him if he cares? Cause I'll do it.”

She says nothing, but looks away from you.

“You said you wanted to be useful, right?” You ask, “Well, I need you to help me with this.”

After what feels like forever she finally relents. “Okay.”

You exit the room, but she does not exit with you.

“Maybe I should just leave through the window.” She says, “So no one can see me.”

Before you can point out how bad of an idea that is, she is already out the window.

You sigh and head down stairs. Going all the way around the inn to the back alley, you find the duelist.

“Did you really need to do that?” You ask.

“Did anyone see me?” She asks.

“No.” You answer, not even caring if the answer was actually yes.

“Good.” She says.

The two of you head for the center of town where a man in shiny gold armor is shouting.

“That's right! One race, One hundred thousand gold! You too can be the winner of this race! Just make a vehicle, power it however you want, and enter the race! Four days left! Enter now while you have the chance! Don't have a fast vehicle!? Don't worry! The race is from here to Ekechi 51! That's right! Efficiency is going to be the winner of this race, so if you want to be the tortoise that beats the hare, sign up here!” He points to you, “You there! Are you ready to race a machine of maximum efficiency!?”

“Hell yeah!” You shout, “This here's my driver, and I'm going to be entering a machine of my design!”

“Fantastic!” The man shouts back, “Just sign up here with the name of your crew and the name of your vehicle!”

You turn around to see Lilac, dark bags under her eyes.

You can barely keep your contempt restrained. What the hell is she doing here?

You take a step away from the sign up sheet to see what she does.

She walks up, scribbles something, turns around, and leaves. She does all of this without looking at you or even saying a word. What a bitch.

You look over to the sheet to see what she had written.

Alchemist? She probably found some alchemist to go and be useless with. Good riddance in your book.

“Is Lilac alright?” Judi asks.

“Huh?” You ask.

“She seems really tired.” The duelist responds, “It's bad to say awake that long.”

“You've stayed awake for longer.”

“That doesn't make it any better, though.”

You sigh. “I'm sure she's fine. She's just getting ready for the race is all. Working hard and blah blah blah.”

“Okay.” Judi responds, “I'll just make sure Lilac is okay.”

“She's fine.”

“Maybe, but I just want to make sure she doesn't work too hard.”

“Why do you even care!?”

Judi looks taken aback by your sudden outburst. She stays silent.

“Well?”

“Because she's our friend?” Judi asks.

“Friend!? After you spent three days trying to get us here, she just up and gave up on the entire race!”

“But she just signed u-”

“She's just pretending to!” You shout, “She's a liar! She's not even an engineer! Everything she's done has been a lie! I guarantee you that the day of the race she'll have nothing!”

Judi looks down. “Maybe you should just go to sleep.” She says, “You are starting to get emotional.”

You begin to rub you temples.

You sigh. “Maybe you are right.”

You start walking towards the inn.

>>32191682
Before this race was a thing, I was all about the team dynamic and making this rag tag group work. I'm not some inhumane monster, I realize that lilac most likely has some emotional baggage that made her snap at us.

But here's the deal. Ambrosis is NOT her babysitter or her shrink or her punching bag to help vent her personal frustrations. I don't care who wins the race or if anyone wins at all. We chose to wholeheartedly help her succeed at something that is ultimately trivial and distracts us from stuff like oh I don't know... FIGURING OUT IF OUR OWN FLESH AND BLOOD BROTHER IS OK.

I didn't expect a thank you, because it was our choice to help her. But none of you should expect an apology, because it was her choice to slam the fucking door in our face.
>>
>>32192035
This is a fairly good argument for why Lilac can fuck off and build her own damn race car, which oh by the way will still be her race car after this race is over just as our tank will still be ours.

However, it is not a good argument for dropping Lilac from the team entirely or for dumping our problems onto Judi.

We'll talk with Lilac in the morning. It's really the only thing we can do at this point.
>>
>>32192035

So it's our fault for having a good idea and running with it?
>>
>>32192422
Lever man's burden.
>>
>>32192414
>>32192402
She probably is one of these engineers who barely scraped by with a pass after 6-7 years trying to get a 4 year degree that her peers finished in 3.5 years. So when we tell her she can't do it we hit a sore spot.
>>
>>32192414
Dude, we made a joke.

THEN she went ballistic.
>>
>>32192414
>>32192422
True. Looking back, she gave up too easily and brushed us aside.

When Spaghetti-Judi did it, we can empathize with her, so it is ok and we pushed her outside of her comfort zone.
>>
>>32192425
Shit, we really are a commie.
>>
>>32192452
Makes sense. If your issues cause you to act like a bitch to those who are trying to help you, it shouldn't be surprising when those people stop trying to help you.
>>
>>32192426
That sounds familiar...
>>32188664
>>
>>32192497
Are people not allowed to be tired and make mistakes?
>>
>>32192530
How was she tired? She was well rested on the cart, and I don't recall her doing anything strenuous before the theorizing.
>>
>>32192530
Has she done anything so far to even acknowledge that she made a mistake?

If your autism makes it so that you can't even apologize when you do something wrong, then you're going to end up forever alone. Nor should the people you blow up on be expected to turn the other cheek.
>>
See Shed?
Look at this. People are arguing and crying bitch tears long after the last update of the night.

You've got something good here. What you're doing is working.
You've made it as a QM.
>>
>>32192497
If you deliberately antagonize someone repeatedly over something that clearly bothers the, you are not allowed to be 'surprised' when they get upset.
Every time we bring up engineering, or try to confront her with it she gets upset.
It wasn't a joke she would find funny.
The turbo-autist thing was right, the MC really just has no idea of how to interact with other human beings.
>>
>>32192530
Why they surely are. But tell me, is ambrosis expected to be a submissive doormat when those mistakes happen?
>>
>>32192591

Should... should we try to put a lever on her and see if that fixes thing?
>>
>>32192644
I think we should just stick to machines. Less drama and far more likely to return the affection given to them.
>>
>>32192588
If this is such a sore subject for her, she probably shouldn't have brough us to an engineering competition. Or brought us to her shack to help her do engineering things.
>>
>>32192666
Steampunk waifu?
>>
>>32192559
Didn't she that turns with us helping keep Judi awake? maybe I'm mis-remembering.

>>32192577
So far, no she hasn't. But it's been, what? less than a day?

>>32192591
Of course not. but flipping about it isn't going to fix anything.

>>32192644
If only it was that easy.. doesn't hurt to try anyway, right?
>>
>>32192644
I wonder if that will boot her out of the game and into the real world? Maybe we can fix the databasing one person at a time?

I'm all for creating the robot race if we level Engineering high enough.
>>
So the next time we talk to Lilac we need to:
>apologize for joking about what is obviously a very touchy subject for her
>but at the same time clarify that Judi was in real bad shape after the blitz to Boulder and we didn't want to have her monumental effort go to waste

We can be neutral about it, nobody said we have to get on our hands and knees and beg for forgiveness. Lilac is obviously very useful with her lorefaggotry, we're going to need her help if we want to save our brother from his Illuminati woes.
>>
>>32192678
With the steam computer idea, we could do it! might have to be a little larger to hold all those levers though.
>>
>>32192733
Nope, next time we talk to lilac will be after we beat her to the finish line. And it'll be to gloat.
>>
>>32192739
Why not some kind of magic computer? We'll have to use very rare items, but it can be done.

The steam computer can be used for number crunching, like old mainframe computers were.
>>
>>32192733
Or we can do what reasonable adults do and ignore the issue and continue on with our lives. The resentment will be there, but shit can still get done.
>>
>>32192733
This sounds good to me.
>>
>>32192810
>wanting to be backstabbed THIS HARD

Leaving relationships damaged when the BBEG's forte is manipulation sounds like a great way to have everything go to shit.
>>
>>32192873
>implying relationship levels matter when the BBEG can just meatpuppet people at will

We're already fucked, it's a question of how.
>>
Hey guys, little off topic but do you know of any way of getting IDs on /tg/? It'd help TS tell who was samefagging at the least, and I could do with being able to spot who does what on this board.
>>
>>32192873
So much this. Let's apologize to Lilac for not working together with her better, tell her she should keep working with her designs, and then maybe to talk to Judi who is worried bout her and worked hard to get her here.

I think that might solve things.
>>
>>32192873
Don't be silly now. The MiB isn't malevolent. He is only looking for freedom for everyone.
If anybody is a villain it's OP for forcing all the characters into these scenarios without regard to their wishes.
>>
>>32192891
>wanting everyone to namefag

fuck off back to reddit
>>
>>32192891
Nope. Welcome to anonymous.

But you can pretty much tell. It's the guy who goes on and on about railroading and leaving both girls behind.
>>
>>32192733
Hey, look! a clear and reasonable suggestion to fixing this mess! If this doesn't work, at least we can say we tried to mend bridges.
>>
>>32192891
you can give yourself a name via the 'name' field in the posting area, but posting anonymously is one of the central elements of 4chan. People tend to give flack for using a name without a good reason.
>>
>>32192733
We're definitely need to remember this next thread.
>>
>>32192910
Nah, I'd just rather be able to tell who's samefagging whilst devoting my brainpower to doing more productive things.

>>32192969
I know, but I'd quite like something like what /b/ has, where every anon is assigned a randomised alphanumeric code in order to differentiate them from other anons. Stops the Spartacus problem from showing up too much.
>>
You know, she'd apologize if you apologized first.

Pride really is the worst.
>>
Progress > Pride > Friendship.
>>
>>32193098
I don't even know what we did wrong. How do you apologize for something you don't understand.
>>
>>32193098
Time to ride this train straight into the ground.
>>
>>32193148
See, this is autism. Not in the "lol so autistic" way that's used as an insult, but genuine autism, where social interaction becomes difficult due to not understanding the various cues that let someone know another person's emotional state.

For reference, we touched a sore point for Lilac, then promptly prodded it repeatedly with a metaphorical sharp stick until she'd had enough. Whilst we were technically at fault, there was no way we could've known and rectified it.

>>32193140
Swap friendship and pride around and we're good on that, friend.
>>
>>32193098
>The only way forward is to be a doormat

Nah, burn those bridges.
>>
>>32193148
It was obvious she was upset that someone was questioning her engineering background. We were being a dick and making fun of her ("are you even really an engineer?", "step up", etc.) well past the point that was established. Why she's upset over it is honestly irrelevant. Maybe we'll find out later if we make amends.
>>
>>32193293
>make amends.

Not in this lifetime
>>
>>32193170
>>32193212
Dude, can you do two things for me:
1) Stop samefagging, it's obvious and annoying.
2) Stop being a twat, you wouldn't complain about railroading if this were a Fighting Fantasy novel.
3) Deal with the fact that we're going to be social with people we know and/or want to have relations with, sexual or otherwise.

Once you've done this, please either kindly leave or go back to being a decent person. Thank you very much, and I hope you have a nice day.
>>
>>32193313
>Waaaaaaah, no one loves my waifu but me

kindly kill yourself with a dull object
>>
>>32193313
>abloobloobloo
>>
>>32193170
>>32193212
>>32193307
>>32193323
You're being a little too obvious, friend.
>>
>>32193293
Huh, I must have just skimmed over that part of the last thread, I need to pay more attention.

By the way anyone else reading the light novels? Some parts of the series are better explained than in the Anime, like how the reason why Shiroe didn't just fly over the mountains was because they were infested with wyverns.
>>
>>32193323
Mate, fuck the waifus, it's just polite to be, well, polite. Would you want someone to be a dick to you for no explainable reason?

Oh, and stop acting like a twat, it makes you seem so childish and insecure in yourself.
>>
>>32193338
He may as well start tripfagging at this point, he's so damned obvious.
>>
>>32193098
I said it before and I'll say it again.

NOT. OUR. PROBLEM. Lilac's her own person. If she can't be a fucking adult and grow some thicker skin instead of stewing in butthurt over a JOKE, ambrosis isn't required to care. Pride my ass.
>>
>>32193345
Everyone here should read the LNs, there's no reason not to if you're invested enough in Log Horizon to be following this quest in the first place. Great way to get prepped for the second season in Fall, too.
