A cityscape stretches for an infinite number of miles in every direction, with skyscrapers and towers breaking the horizon.

Static fills the sky like an empty television screen, with the light of the sun replaced by a mocking grey tone. The lights of the city seem like fireflies, winking in and out, an urban body with buildings as organs.

A small girl with a blue flower growing from her eye sits on a cube, which is covered in test cards, the kind you see sometimes on television. The cubes float above a sea of sharp triangles and pyramids of many colors that extend far below you. She stares, observing you silently.

Because, after all. She doesn't exist.

She mouths three words. You can't tell what they are.

>"Okay, I think I get it now. Some serious shit, but I think I get it." He nods. "I really don't WANT to get it, but I do. I'm seriously just waiting for the Candid Camera announcement any minute now." You shake your head.

>"I was too, dude. But then the pumpkin man appeared and when he almost killed me, I had to take it seriously." He stares at you.

>"I'm fine with this dude, but only if you tell Jess. We're going to the cafe, now."

>"But don't we have class?" You ask.

>"Jess. Now. She needs to hear this too." He steers you away from campus and to the cafe, where you usually meet, texting away on his phone. Puca follows the both of you obediently.

>After a bit, you arrive at the familiar cafe where the three of you always meet. Sitting in one of the booths, with an irritated look on her face, is your other best friend Jess.

>"So what's this emergency meeting for? And is she the Buglady, Marc?"

"Jess!" Marc hisses at her with a strained expression.

"Hey, your words, not mine." She replies flippantly, pointing at the seats next to her. "Sit down, come on. All of you."

Marc takes a seat next to Jess, and Puca takes her seat next to you. It's kinda strange, in a way. Usually you just let Jess have a side all to herself, because she likes to stretch.

"Oh, sorry about the comment earlier. We haven't met, I'm Jess. You are...?" Jess holds her hand out to Puca, who takes it.

"My name is Puca. It is nice to meet you, Jessica." She smiles wide.

"Yeah, likewise. When did you meet Lou over there? He's not usually the type to attach to a girl." She states plainly. You glare at her a little.

"Two days ago, when we met up near an intersection. We found that we had a lot in common." Puca says.

She's being intentionally vague, waiting on you to clarify for her.

>Primary: What do you say?
「」 Be vague. Try to play it off as a prank on Marc. It's a stretch, but he would be dumb enough to believe it.
「」 Be honest. Explain how you really met her, and what's going on.
「」 Try to have Puca explain it. She's a lot more familiar with this stuff than you are.

>Secondary: How did you meet Marc, anyway?
「」 You hit him with the ball during a baseball game when you were kids.
「」 He went to the same daycare as you.
「」 He beat up one of your brothers, so you responded in kind.

"Well, not exactly." You interrupt Puca, and both Jess and her look at you for a moment. "You're leaving a lot out of it, Puca."

"Then I will leave it to you, my king." She says. The waiter comes, and you order your usual-- a small mocha. Not to exciting, but they make them good here. Puca orders a water, not knowing what else to get. Jess and Marc order their usuals as well.

"My king?" Jess asks, looking confused. You smile a half-smile.

"Yeah, that's got something to do with it as well." You sigh, then launch into the same explanation you gave Marc

...

"That sounds like a fantastic idea for a graffiti piece." That's Jess's first response.

"That's what I said!" Marc's hands fly into the air as the coffee you ordered arrives. You had some a little while ago, but this much shouldn't hype you up too much.

"You sure she didn't beat your ass to the curb? If I recall, that's how you met Marc." Puca blushes a little, and you raise your eyebrows at Jess.

"Yeah. Marc beat the crap out of Johnny and you went after him, right? Then you both kicked the shit out of each other and here we are." She laughs a little, and Marc snorts a little. It's a very abbreviated version, but that's pretty much what happened. Your brother and Marc went to the same middle school, and Johnny did something dumb like usual. When Marc beat him up for it, you leapt to his aid. Then after you both fought, you ended up talking in the hospital and you became the best of friends.

>Marc gains the trait: "Childhood Friend".

"Nah, not like that. I can hardly believe it myself, but I'm telling the truth. Puca, can you show them a little bit of your insect stuff? Just an arm or a hand or something, we don't want to draw attention." Puca nods, and puts her arm on the table. Her skin pales and stitches weave across her arm, insects crawling in the seams. Marc jumps back just like last time, but Jess blinks a few times in amazement. She seems almost enraptured.

"Damn, that's kinda cool." Puca returns herself to normal, withdrawing her arm, and Jess sits back in her seat. "Not much you can say in front of stuff like that, can you? I'm waiting for a Candid Camera annoucement or something." Marc nervously laughs again.

"Again, that's what I said!" He says.

"So what do you plan to do about all this?" Jess leans forward and asks you.

>Primary: What do you want to tell your friends?
「」 I'm going to try to keep out of this.
「」 I'll try to solve all this peacefully, without getting anyone hurt.
「」 I'm honestly not sure. I'm just winging it right now.

>Secondary: And how did you meet Jess?

「」 She caught you tagging on the wall in high school.
「」 She dated one of your other brothers for a while.

"Right now? I'm really not sure. I'm trying to stay alive right now, winning doesn't matter to me." You sigh, and Puca pats you on the back.

"And I will guarantee that my king survives." Puca smiles at the both of them confidently.

"Oh yeah, and you." Jess says, her brow furrowing. "All that stuff about shadows, and the repressed self. Is that really true? Because I've known Lou here for a while, and I don't think he's repressing bugs. We'd know, believe me." You snort a little. She really would know. She caught you spraying on one of the walls of your high school, and since she was a hall monitor, she reported you. She also was the one who put you in charge of cleaning it, so it surprised you when she said that she liked what you were making. You got to talking about art, and ever since then you've been friends.

>Jess gains the trait: "Overbearing"
>Jess gains the trait: "Art-lover"

"That is who I am. It does not matter whether or not you choose to believe it. That is the truth." Puca responds coldly, but Jess brushes it off.

"All I'm saying is that if you take one step in the wrong direction and we hear about it, you're going to look like one of the cars over by his apartment." Jess frowns, and turns to you.

"Alright, so? What are we going to do now?" You blink for a second, realizing what she's asking you.

>Primary: How do you respond to her offer to help?
「」 ”No, no 'we' business. I'm not getting you guys involved."

"Hey, I mean, if there's anything you guys could think of, I could probably use it." Remembering the fight with the pumpkin man Jack last night makes your doubts about asking for help disappear. If you're going to survive this, you're going to need help in some way.

"Thank you god, he finally realizes what he needs. Were you avoiding us to keep us out of this?" Jess asks you, looking peeved. You can't bring yourself to nod.

"My king believed that you would be in danger if you were involved. He wishes only for your safety." Puca pipes up, but Jess shushes her.

"And we're adults, we can make our own decisions. The decision we're making right now is to help him." Jess replies, and Puca frowns.

"And while my first instinct tells me to go grab some two by fours and come with you..." She pauses. "From what you've told us, that might not be the best idea. But how about this: After class, we'll both come over and work something out, alright?" You nod. It sounds harmless enough, and as long as you can avoid the cops you should be fine.

"We have class in ten minutes, guys. We gotta get going." Marc shows you his phone. Soon after, you put some money on the table for the drinks and get up from the booth.

>>
"Oh, that reminds me. Is she coming, Lou?" Jess asks you.

"Yeah, she likes to look after me while I'm in class." Jess cocks her eyebrow. "Outside of class, of course."

"I believe it is a good way to spend my time while waiting for him." Puca smiles again.

"Uh-huh. Alright, let's get going." You smile a little to yourself. Yeah, you didn't think Jess would trust her just like that.

Soon after, you get to the college campus. Class will start soon, and you can't see a reason to skip out today.

>Primary: What are you going to do with Puca?
「」 Tell her to keep near the campus. You never know.
「」 Tell her to hang around the construction site and see if Jack shows up again.

"So we have Art History first period, right Jess?" She nods, and you start on your way, waving goodbye to Marc.

"My king, what would you have me do?" Puca asks, and Jess looks at her strangely again.

"For now, go back to my street and keep watch over what happens. If anything strange happens, tell me." Puca replies with a curt 'Yes, my king.' and trots off to do what was asked of her.

"Why does she keep calling you 'my king' anyway?" Jess asks you.

"I dunno. I just got used to it. Maybe it has something to do with the whole Shadow thing?" Jess shrugs.

"Yeah, I don't know either." You both head to class. Not much interesting happens, except for one very distinct thing.

The teacher announces a talk happening at the other campus in the city, about modern art interpretations. What matters most though... is that the talk is being given by your idol. Your eyes bulge in shock as you listen carefully. He dropped off the map after he stopped teaching at your college, not putting out any new pieces, contacting anybody, nothing. You even heard that he cut off his cell phone service, so nobody could get in touch with him either.

And now he's giving a talk at the other campus? No way you aren't going to this.

Soon after, class is dismissed.

"Wait, so Meinart's giving the talk?" Jess says to you. She has a bit of interest in art as well, and she knows all about your idol, after what you've told her.

"Yeah. We have to go and find out what happened to him." You reply to her resolutely.

Then, you hear a voice in your head. Puca's voice.

"My king, there is a girl being interrogated by police on your street. She looks younger than I, and she looks normal. However, she has several strange mannerisms about her. What should I do?"

>Primary: What do you say back?
「」 "Investigate her. See what's going on, and what she's saying to the police, and make sure nobody sees you."
「」 "Keep away, I'll be there soon." Go alone.
「」 "Keep away, we'll be there soon." Go with Jess, or Marc if you call him too.

"No, we can't go chasing after every weirdo that pops up. Watch her, but otherwise just keep your lookout." You reply to Puca, and she gives you a 'Yes, my king' into your head.

"Uhh... I didn't say anything." Jess looks at you funny.

"Oh, whoops, did I say that out loud? Puca and I have this telepathy thing. She can say stuff into my head and I can say things back. I haven't gotten used to it yet." You laugh at yourself, and Jess smiles.

"Telepathy. At this point, I guess it's just another thing to add to the pile of shit you've gotten yourself into." She sighs.

Classes don't last too long, and through them you continue to get updates from Puca. So far, the police are interrogating everyone they can find about the riots, or so they're calling them. A lot of property was damaged, but it doesn't sound like anybody was hurt. You smile, thanking Puca's child army for that.

Finally, after your last class ends, you get another update from Puca.

"My king, the girl is sticking around after she was interrogated. If I had to guess, she is performing the same function I am. I have kept out of view so far, but I'm not sure if I can do so for much longer."

"Alright, got it. Thanks for the report. Just gimme a sec." You say to Puca.

"Okay, so we have to go pick up Marc, and then I should go pick up a few things from home before we go to your place." Jess says to you.

"Puca, we'll be there soon. Where are you?" She describes a small alley near where your street opens up. She's been watching from one end of it.

"What's up?" She asks.

"Remember that girl I was talking about a while ago? Puca's really suspicious of her, so we're going to go investigate." You say.

"Okay, got it. I'll call Marc on the way." She takes out her phone and starts dialing.

In a few minutes, you meet up with Puca.

"That's the girl over there." She points out a young girl with blonde hair wearing a hat. She was right. She does look plain, but there's something off about her. Her movements are really stiff, and she stares at things for long periods of time. "What do you suggest we do, my king?" Puca asks.

"Yeah, I agree with Jess. Let's wait for Marc, she said it would only be a minute." She nods, and Puca steps back.

"Yes, my king." She nods, and the three of you watch the girl. She's in an alleyway not far from your own. She's got a strange way of looking at things, where she turns her entire head instead of just moving her eyes. She's also got this expression of anguish on her face, like she's in intense pain, or regretting something. She seems to be looking at three things: the wreckage, the cops, and then at the entrance of the street. Is she waiting for something? Or someone?

"Hey, I'm here." Marc rushes into the alleyway, carrying around a baseball bat of his own. "So what're we all watching?"

"Marc, you dumb fuck!" Jess yells as loud as the situation will allow. "Why the hell did you bring a bat! There are cops all over the place, and what the hell are they going to think if they see a guy with a bat!?" She yells at him, and he casts his eyes downward.

"Well, I thought it would help..." He says. You hear the click of a camera several times, the cops taking pictures of everything.

"She's moving." Puca suddenly says that, and you all turn from Marc to the girl, who is getting up and moving backwards into the alleyway.

Hopefully none of the cops noticed you.

You only catch a glimpse of her as she turns the corner. Waving to the others, you quietly look around the corner before following her.

You've got to act fast-- there's no time. The girl's crossing the road, and you need to get to her before she does.

Except for one thing-- the walk signal isn't on yet! And there's a car coming straight for her!

But you can do it. You know you can. Because you can't let her die.

You push yourself as hard as you can, harder than you thought you could. The screams of your friends, of Puca, all die in the wind. For an instant you could swear that your legs grow rocket boosters as you push forward explosively.

The girl turns towards the car. Her hat shimmers, turning into a huge face. It grows tentacles. Her mouth opens in surprise. But that doesn't matter. Because no matter what, you can't let her die.

You see the car coming, faster than it should, but that doesn't matter. Your own feet touch the white lines of the crosswalk, and time seems to slow. The girl turns towards you, her shining yellow eyes reflecting the evening sun.

The car rips towards you. It's in the intersection now, and as it comes towards you even faster, your arms stretch out towards her.

Holding her in your arms, you collapse with a roll onto the other side of the street. The car keeps going, and before long you can hear police sirens from your street. But that doesn't matter.

You look into her eyes, panting. "A-Are you alright?"

"Y-Yes..." She says, staring back into your own, a faint blush on her cheeks. Her hat shimmers once more, and she turns back into the girl she was before she crossed the street.

"Wh-Who are you?" She asks you. Reality rushes back towards you. People are crowding around you.

「」 Stay there. Maybe you can get a favor from whoever it is.
「」 Write-in.

>Secondary: What do you say back?
「」 "Your friendly neighborhood college student."
「」 "Lou, Lou Haring."
「」 Stay silent.

Can we agree to combine these?

「」 "Your friendly neighborhood college student."

I think so. I'll combine them into "Just your friendly neighborhood college student that also happens to have a shadow. If you and your partner want to talk peacefully, I'll buy you folks a drink."

That sound good?

I support this.

>>32214440
Maybe leave out the "I HAVE A SHADOW TOO" part, but do let her know we are aware of the game.
>>
>>32214483
Yeah, good point. Also, mention something about zombies while we're meeting the partner.

"Just your friendly neighborhood college student that knows your secret. If you and your partner are willing to talk peacefully, I'll buy you folks a drink." She stares at you, her eyes sparkling in wonder, and she nods fiercely.

"Lou! Are you alright!?" Jess runs over to you as the walk signal turns on, and you nod at her.

"Yeah, I'm fine. She's alright too." You let the girl out of your arms, and she stumbles a bit, still looking at you with a subtle blush.

"You scared the shit out of us, dude!" You smile at him, and he smiles back. Somehow, it all ended up alright.

Puca looks at you with a strangely disappointed expression, but then sighs and smiles at you.

"Good job, my king." She helps you to your feet.

"I'll go ask Dad." With a chirp, the girl you saved runs over to the car and knocks on the window. The window rolls down, and she talks to someone inside. In just a few seconds, the engine of the car turns off, and the car door opens.

"Thank you for saving my daughter. She said that you wanted to talk to me, so why don't I get you all something to drink down there?" The man's voice is gritty and hardened as he gestures to a small restaurant down the street.

But you don't respond immediately. You have to use all your strength from keeping your jaw from dropping to the floor.

Because the man speaking to you is Meinart Jensen, your idol.

Sorry if we were a bit short this time, but I felt that was the perfect place to stop. I'm not going to lie, I had no idea what to do when you crit'd on that roll, but after I thought of something I just had to do it. Nice job as always, and I hope to see you next time on Tuesday, 9-10PM

If you're not following me yet, my twitter is @GMMindQuest. I'm always looking for critique and feedback, so lay it on me if you've got it. I'll stick around for questions, so if you've got any, ask away.

Hey, thanks again for running. Enjoyed the thread as usual.

So, like, is our suspicion's that she has a shadow as a hat, or that she IS the shadow and her "Dad" is her partner?
Because that kinda confused me...
>>
>>32214787
>she IS the shadow and her "Dad" is her partner?
That's what the evidence points to right now. She's definitely the zombie summoner shadow you had seen before.
>>
>>32214818
Oh.

Well.

Erm...

This situation just got a hell of a lot more complicated...
