UPDATES:

- Cherubim entries added to Hellion Upgrades.
- Machine Cannon entry added to Weapon Research.
- Updated Red Comet upgrades.
- New entry: Hollow Sun Upgrades.
- Vehicles added to the Foundry.

NEW SYSTEMS:

- Vehicles: Specialist vehicles are now available for construction at the Hollow Sun. Vehicles require a Vehicle Bay to be utilized - At present, you have one bay available, which is currently utilized by the Red Comet. After construction, Vehicles can be further upgraded at the Hollow Sun - If a vehicle is ever destroyed, you lose all upgrades on that vehicle.

Unique machines like the Red Comet are inherently irreplaceable.

Vehicles can be summoned via Teleport Homer.

- Modular Frame: When summoned, Hellion units can jettison limbs to replace your destroyed components. (i.e. If you're missing a left arm, you can replace it with a Hellion arm.) This prevents you from utilizing anything other than Hellion equipment on the limb, for the duration of the battle; However, the limb functions normally otherwise.

Hellion components are balanced, Virtue components are high-performance but fragile, and Cherubim components are durable but bulky.

- Transformation Servoes: If researched, Transformation Servoes allow the relevant class of Hellion to reconfigure itself - Effectively destroying that specific unit - into a support unit for your personal use. Be aware that this will override the related components.

(i.e. Ardor Grips lock out arm weapons, Metatron Wing flight units replace your Tempest Scrander, and Goliath Cannon Arrays replace your Interceptor System, until jettisoned.)

Question! Do the massive addtions to the HS guide not warrant a version change from 3.x to 4.0?

Also no matter what else we're voting for the Terminus.
>>
>>32216363
Yeah, definitely Terminus.

I love the addition of Machine Cannon research, btw.

So, with Zero Point drive and Strike Harkens we can create spider-guardian.

Also, can transformation servos allow us to grant other players equipment? And is the Goliath Cannon Array another kind of interceptor or a set of weapons, similar to our missile racks?

This is amazing, and will sadly be needed for extended fights. It would be better if we can help allies the same way.

>Transformation Servoes allow the relevant class of Hellion to reconfigure itself - Effectively destroying that specific unit - into a support unit for your personal use.

Guess not.

So, Terminus and Falsehood Array? Let's try and have a Hellion research in progress as much as possible going forward.
>>
Red Comet essentials:
- Galvanic Emitters (Fixes melee vulnerability)
- Multicore Converter
- Thanatos Infuser
- Nitro Boosters
- Progenitor Engram
This allows it to have heavily increased lifetime.

Other nice stuff:
- Guardian AI ("Flee, you fool!")
- Mimetic Alloys
- Panoptic Array
- Myomer Hypetrophy
- Chassis Reinforcement
As a second layer of survivability.

Also, I wonder if the Nova Reactor upgrade also applies to us, considering that our Cobalt Booster is the reactor of an Armory Guardian.

Helios Matrix is better. We want snipers.

Also, might want to invest in a 10% upgrade. I'm in favor of an additional heavy weapon that we can carry without needing the arsenal beacon.
>>
>>32216481
>We want snipers
We want arguments (for that).
Let's not branch out too much and have a lot of stuff but little specialisations
>>
>>32216481
On second thought, let's go for two tank upgrades.
We are currently focusing way too strongly on the Hellions.
I want Multicore Converter and Thanatos Infuser.
>>
>>32216481
Falsehoods are support types. We want anything that comes out of their side research.

And we don't need another heavy weapon. Dual chaingun/double tau will do for us for a long time.

(It's a pair of shoulder cannons that are fired using the Interceptor System's interface.)

Joker - wake up.

It's time to wake up.

The chapel is starlight-dark and midnight-silent. Every now and then, sound breathes through the black space; A sound that is both the mournful moan of the wind, and the crush of acid breakers on a coast of black sand.

Small orange sparks dance under the high roof, like fireflies, like flecks of gold leaf.

The walls tremble, respiring softly. They glisten black, in the wan light. Dust, fine trickles of dust, seep out through the cracks - Oozing, gathering, with a slow viscosity that doesn't seem like dust at all.

Servoes whirr, beneath the interlocking segments of your armour. Your optic visor flickers in the perpetual gloom; Tendrils of interstellar black writhing away from your boots, fraying into strands that twist into vapour, into smoke.

You're somewhere you're not supposed to be.

The girl is the only solid point in a shifting world - The chapel writhes around you, knotted in twists of night. It breathes, the cracks that spiderweb the walls - Once pristine, once white - forming a fractal arterial network that pumps the black oil from all this place had been to all this place is.

Kotone looks up. Her cassock falls all the way to the floor, playing around her with the soft rustle of sliding material, a sound unpleasantly fluid - It ripples and whispers around her, like a live thing; Like the pale hair that falls around a paler face, as lips move and form the words-

"Joker-kun..."

And in all of a moment, you realize-

She's not talking to you.

Maybe we should hint to Bishamon/Ogre that shit is going dpwn at the festival and politely ask them to not start shit during that time.

So, can we build a mech by unlocking all chassis types, as well as the servos?

>>32216499
Tempted, but >>32216418 makes an excellent point. Hellions come with a bunch of side benefits. How about we fight over a Hellion model to take with the understanding that until it's done we're upgrading the Comet?

And the Terminus, of course.

>>32216539
Anyone else flashing back to Heaven's Feel?

>>32216544
Now there's a mental image. If they integrated instead of replaced (note the I next to each of them, that seems promising) I'd say they'd make Joker Man X.
>>
>>32216597
The problem is that an army of Hellions is much more ueful in the upcoming battle. A single unit-no matter how strong (like a mech) is easily swarmed and/or debuffed.

I feel that there is a mass battle waiting to happen in the near future.
>>
>>32216539

She stands in profile - Numinous, in sharp relief. All of the light in the world is where she is. And from the side - From the black stain that divides the chapel, that slants across the ground as starkly as the divide between life and death-

-comes a voice.

A voice, and a white hand. It is the colour of albaster, of ivory, of bone - Something that should be pure and somehow chaste, to be noble and good. But there is something chilling about this whiteness; A cold that makes hoarfrost rime the walls, that makes threads of white mist coil up and away.

I NEED MORE.

The pale radiance swells to engulf all things, and-

Your vision is blurred, but there's something comforting, something reassuring, about the simple mundanity; The muted chatter of your classmates forming a backdrop of white noise, as Kazuya stops shaking you at last.

"...You all right, man?" he's saying - His head canted to the side as he regards you, his grin frank but uneasy. "-That looked like one hell of a nightmare."

OP, about the modular frames, would the replacement limbs be modified by the Hellion researches pertaining to Hellion structure?

>>32216642
Already have one. Battle's not for another few days anyway.

>>32216659
No.

>>32216629
That's why we do the Hellion researches. It takes between four and six threads for a research to complete, and we'll have several times that before it comes time for the final battle.
>>
>>32216457

(It's been a pretty rough week.)

>>32216544

(Technically, you already have a mech. But yes, you can armour yourself almost entirely in Hellion components/support units if you like. The main benefit of Transformation Servoes - When used in conjunction with the Teleport Homer - is that you can turn damaged Hellions into a potent suite of weaponry.)

>>32216562

(I'll add that the Hellion support units are meant to be inherently disposable. Once you've exhausted their use, you can simply discard them - At any time - and return to your normal equipment. They're meant to augment your capabilities; Basically, you're free to use them up.)

>>32216481
>>32216492
>>32216499
>>32216505

(In addition, I'll add:

I'm aware of the issues with the Interceptor System, and the issues that might potentially arise with Hellions. A major issue in playtesting was the action economy problem; Having multiple summoned minions and/or remote drones meant that the PC could potentially act up to ten times in a single combat round - As well as forcing an opponent to individually target each one to neutralize the threat.

The only solution, at present, was to make them expensive or de minimis. Due to the immense advantage they could potentially afford, I'll adjust Hellion stats/cost accordingly, if they prove to be too overwhelming in combats.)

>>32216683

(Yes. You also gain access to the weapons held in the replacement limb; I'll add that they're not quite as good as your own armour, but they're more to compensate for a potentially crippling injury - Like the loss of your primary weapons - instead of to provide an immediate and immense advantage.)
>>
>>32216683
>No.
Then why do we get the research that allows us to upgrade other people?

I like that research, but I don't understand your logic.
>>
>>32216708
>(Yes. You also gain access to the weapons held in the replacement limb; I'll add that they're not quite as good as your own armour, but they're more to compensate for a potentially crippling injury - Like the loss of your primary weapons - instead of to provide an immediate and immense advantage.)
What happens if we heal a replaced limb? Can we get our old limb back?
>>
>>32216708
>(Technically, you already have a mech. But yes, you can armour yourself almost entirely in Hellion components/support units if you like. The main benefit of Transformation Servoes - When used in conjunction with the Teleport Homer - is that you can turn damaged Hellions into a potent suite of weaponry.)
Well, I was actually thinking more about combining the Hellions amongst themselves, to make a super-Hellion.
>>
>>32216631
>"-That looked like one hell of a nightmare."
"I didn't attempt to murder anyone in my sleep, did I?"
>>
>>32216709
My mistake, I thought you were suggesting handing out one of the Relics in the Vault. A custom relic or upgrade is entirely different since it's (supposedly) something that he'll be able to use without needing acclimation.

Also, having this could let us scan Joker with all that implies, and further every scan we take expands the Sun's database, meaning if we're stupid lucky, free or cheaper researches as it finds solutions to its problems, like with Leukocyte. It's multi-functional.

>>32216755
...Really?
>>
>>32216760
>...Really?
Just some gallow's humor.
>>
>>32216724

(Yes. You can immediately jettison the Hellion replacement, once full functionality is restored. In fact, that's actually preferable; Your own weapons/systems are usually better than Hellion components. The main advantage of Hellion modules are that they're free - And if there's a large number of Hellions in the area, they're easily accessible.

They're also useful in an emergency, if healing isn't available.)

>>32216659

"Right, right." Kazuya chuckles, leaning back in his seat - It creaks, as he glances over at Yui; She's three rows ahead, at the front of the bus - Her features carefully composed, her brow ever-so-slightly furrowed as she unfurls the map one more time...Before closing it, unread, a gesture she's been repeating over the course of the trip.

"-Hmmm." He looks back at you, as if about to say something...But then Kazuya shrugs, apparently thinking better of it. Instead, he just sighs; A little smile playing over his lips, as he looks back.

It's hard to believe that you're finally on the way to Seisin High - The first part of the day passed in last-minute frenzy of preparation (There's always something *someone's* forgotten) - but, by the time the first rays of the morning sun broke the horizon...

-You were on the road at last.

The Cultural Festival spans three days; The first such interschool event in ten years, it bears every sign of an epic undertaking - You've heard, vaguely, that at least eight schools were involved in the preparations...And the place opens to the public tomorrow. Today's meant for the students alone - With a mostly tedious array of speeches to sit through, introductions to make, as the stage is set for the frenzy of the next two days.

...At least they're letting you stay over.

> "I'm supposed to meet Mio."

He smiles at that; "About time," Kazuya says - "I'm glad you're getting on okay. Just - You know - be *careful*, all right? Don't go crazy, now."

A few days ago, there was a discreet announcement by the school board - One that addressed, with commendable directness, the issue of impropriety...And the severe penalties that would be levelled for it. Zero tolerance, to head off any trouble - A real possibility, whenever an all-girl's school is involved.

In fact - If you've been reading this correctly - the entire festival is going to be held *away* from the grounds of Seisin High...Or, more specifically, at the sprawling compound now thoroughly refitted as a staging block.

The level of expense involved must've been mind-boggling.

>I'm checking myself, it doesn't say it's an exception.
The description is specifically that it allows us to utilize modules while in Fortress mode.
You also have to consider that we CAN'T equip multiple modules at once. The Adaptor just allows us to SWITCH between modules.
This means that the Binder would be entirely pointless with our current available upgrade path if it required a module slot.
>>
on the subject of the assault shroud, I so dearly want ALL the upgrades for it.

But its so pricey that its not worth it. if only we could get a bundle deal or something. We'd

>fortress mode explodostab prison, crossfiring shrike blades at anyone inside, reabsorbing misses, and all of it is explosions.
>decoys people ignore because they're not shooting everything in sight with tons of plasma - and then they give explosive hugs

It's something to think about.

The place, by all accounts, is *enormous*...It was once three schools, until the falling population - And the grand disaster that followed - resulted in their eventual amalgamation. Apparently, it weathered the storm with comparatively little damage - One of the original three buildings abandoned to time and the elements, the remaining two maintained at staggering cost; Apparently, it's a point of pride.

"So, uh..." Kazuya coughs, discreetly - "...How *is* Mio, anyway? I haven't heard from her for...Well, a while now."

Like Kou, Kazuya really does have a terrible poker face.

I'm in this camp as well, regardless of what sort of romantic clusterfuck we end up getting insinuated into.

For crying out loud, we got tapped into the collective unconscious of the Red World and were allowed to ask its memory one question, and we used it to ask what the fuck happened to her.

Even if popular vote swings to Mio as a romantic prospect, we at least owe it to Hecate to liberate her from whatever weird Pazuzu-induced(?) imprisonment she ended up in after she saved our life at Nara Dreamland.

>Talk to mio and *warn her of serious shit* that's about to happen at the festival - just like that time at the papillion vs enfer! when we haltingly told her we were going to transform, and to stay close, but we were checking out mentallly
> whatever happens with Cybele - she deserves an equal shot at our affections, with a real body

> "She's volunteering for the festival committee. Her school situation is improving as well--can you believe someone like her isn't a target of adoration? Makes you wonder what the world inside those all-girl schools is like.

"Well, I *have* been thinking about it..." Kazuya muses aloud, with something like a leer - It's a little alarming, actually. But then he snorts, and shakes his head; "-I know, right? You'd think Mio-chan would be popular..."

His voice trails off, the speculation left unanswered.

> "You can have Australia."

"Ha! You can *keep* Australia." But then his voice sobers, slightly - Taking on a more serious note. "Whatever you're planning, man...I hope it works out, for you *and* for her." Kazuya glances down and to the side - For a moment, he looks troubled.

"-For *someone*, at least."

The bus rocks, as the gear shifts. You're travelling uphill, now, along a winding path - Pausing momentarily at a pair of great brass gates, which swing open with a slow, silent grace...And then through.

-It's green.

It's close to the end of the year. In the city beyond, the sky is grey and drab, a dense, biting cold holding sway - The trees like skeletal fingers, bare of all leaves, the snow churned to something muddy and slick underfoot. But *here*-

Here, it's still summer.

That's the appearance of things, at least. You can't imagine the effort it must've taken to keep the grassy lawns so exquisitely manicured - To give the evergreen trees that line the road the appearance of health. But perhaps there's something Elysian about this place - Some rarefied, inherent quality - that makes the colours a little richer, a little more vital...

-Like the world inside a Hyades' private heaven.

You blink, and the impression fades. Against all reason, the background noise of chatter has been momentary silence, in a kind of hushed awe - But then it starts up again, louder than before, as if to make up for the lost time.

"Whoah-" Kazuya shakes his head, in wonder - "...Am I *seeing* this? It looks..."

Like the city from your memories. Like the world from six years ago.

A glance at Kazuya, and you know he's thinking the same thing.

The crisp smack of Yui's palms being brought together - A brief clap - cuts through the white noise; "All right, everyone - We'll be disembarking, soon," she says, briskly - All business, now, with the firm voice of authority. "Remember, make sure you bring everything with you - Don't leave anything on the bus, all right?"

She draws a deep breath, as the bus rumbles to a stop; It rocks slightly as it settles, the double-doors ratcheting open with a hiss of pistons. "No shoving - Once we're off the bus, stay together and don't wander off-"

"Yes, Mom~!" someone shouts, from the back - You don't know who it is, but the *look* Yui shoots him - brief but cutting - is enough to freeze the blood.

"Guess we're here. We should-"

And Kazuya's next words are drowned out in the happy, blurred roar of everyone talkign at once.

The actual best chance would've been with Natsumi, I think, given her personal connection to Anon pre-disaster (and likely even pre-Frost Cestus) and intimate (while not quite as comprehensive as our own) knowledge of what Red World exposure actually means and does to a person.

But that ship's long since sailed. And probably also set ablaze in a spontaneous viking funeral or something.

It's like herding cats. Or chickens. Getting everyone off the bus in one piece - And pointed in the same direction - should be a herculean undertaking; Somehow, Yui manages it. It's not long before your troupe - In less of a line, and more of an amorphous mass - is winding its way across a plaza larger than anything you've ever seen, past the tall spires of buildings older and more graceful than you've ever seen in one piece.

There's something like a whole fleet of buses coming and going, one at a time, each one disgorging another flock of students - milling in confusion before they trudge off, too. But Yui seems to have a firm grasp of the direction you're heading in...

-Until, before a garden path paved with russet tiles, you meet the welcoming committee at last.

---------------------

> "Welcome to Seisin High; It's a honour to meet you all, today."

The Student Council President's voice is measured, clear as a bell - Her brown eyes warm, as she dips her head in a little nod; Her hands folded demurely on her lap, as her wheelchair rolls forward - The half-circle of girls parting smoothly, to let her pass.

> "For the first time in ten years, our school has invited other student bodies for a true cultural exchange; Even if it's only for a little while...I hope you'll enjoy your time with us."

Yui's all politeness, as she echoes the bow; Conferring with her counterpart, the rhythms of their speech formal and practised. You get the feeling the other girl's given the speech several times today, enough for it to blur into memory - But there's something familiar about her, all the same - You dimly recall meeting her bef-

"Shizuka-san...Thank you for your consideration."

There's a soft ripple of laughter - Enough to make Yui flush, with surprise.

"No need to be so formal," Shizuka says, with the same slight smile - "...I'm a student too, after all."

...You remember now. From the hospital, with Naoya.

A low murmur comes from your troupe. At your side, Kazuya's staring, intently - Until Natsumi elbows him in the side, hard enough to make him wince.

"Stop *staring*~!" she murmurs, a little sharply - You can't be sure, but you get the feeling Natsumi's slightly disgruntled by the whole thing. "-Or at least keep your mouth *closed*-"

It's hard *not* to stare. There's something almost...ethereal about the girls - Maybe it's their uniforms, or the measured air of class, of grace that they exude - It's enough to make you (And you're not alone in this) feel...Clumsy, maybe. Leaden, and distinctly self-conscious.

"It's not-" Kazuya begins, his voice hushed - He cranes his neck, to get a better look...Then blinks, realization flitting across his face.

"Is that...Anon, I think that's Mio!"

He nods, significantly, in the right direction - Enough for you to catch the faint gleam of sunlight on blonde hair. Strange that you didn't notice it before; She's standing a little to the side, somehow apart from the rest of the formation - Her expression a careful mask of serene civility, quite at odds with her usual cheer...Something a little longing in her gaze, as her eyes flit over the crowd.

"Wait, what are yo-" Natsumi begins, her eyes widening - But she's a little too late.

Mio's head comes up - Her expression momentarily startled...

-And then she smiles. A simple, uncomplicated joy lights her up from within - The look in her eyes soft enough to make you pleasantly uncomfortable, a flush to her cheeks; You actually hear her murmur your name - A hushed "Anon-kun-!" that's just a little too loud...Taking an instinctive step forward, the motion sudden enough to make heads turn-

You don't think anyone else heard her - Not really - but the girl at her side gives her a sharp, surprised glance; A look that's more than a little appalled. Mio notices, at the very last moment - She stops in place, her hands folded before her...But it's hard to keep her expression serene, when she can't stop sneaking glances - A little shy - in your direction.

> "Hey, did you see-"
> "Who's that girl...?"
> "Is she looking for-?"

The small crowd around you shifts, slightly - There's a general looking-around and wondering, and Mio drops her gaze just in time; She certainly seems happier now, at least - Standing a little taller, a little straighter, though her blush lingers for rather longer.

Shizuka glances in your direction - For a moment, it's as if she's looking *directly at you*, suddenly enough to be alarming...But then her lips curve in a little smile, and her gaze returns to Yui. They're talking about your accomodations - A dorm building not too far away, that's been set aside for guests.

You tune out the drone of conversation, for a moment.

You focus.

The world inverts, and the Red flows in. It's easy, here - Without the distortion, without the buzzing static that blurs your perceptions - the faint, imperceptible lag that slow each motion...

And you realize, with a jolt - The Shroud here is paper-thin.

STAGE: ARCADIA

Underfoot - Rich ivory tile. In the distance - Tall, graceful buildings, with the curves and sweep of alien architecture - so different from the squat, angular skyscrapers of the iron city below.

And above - There's a shape. A mountain too big to be a mountain, a tooth of stone that looms out of the sky, broader and taller than can be taken in at a single glance. It's so big that it fills your field of vision, up and down and side-to-side, before you even realize that it's there...

No. Not a mountain.

A city.

You're reading into the situation what you want to see.

Anon has nightmares. Consistently. Frequently enough that one night without any is rare outside of unconsciousness. The only one we've been told about is the night Mio spent with him. That's chemistry there; just being around her relaxes him enough to make the nightmares go away.

It seems to me that Mio is ANON'S ideal partner, instead of Red Joker's. And that's much healthier.

Besides, everything we've learned about Hecate since she left suggests that she wanted a Joker for a pet.

>Besides, everything we've learned about Hecate since she left suggests that she wanted a Joker for a pet.
We already went over that a while ago. She was obviously going to manipulate him for her own goals, but actively waifuing her changed the situation drastically. Character development and all that.
>>
>>32218238
...Says the other person she was manipulating and who was madly and unthinkingly in love with her.

fwiw I think her change was genuine. Which is why I wholly support playing this character doing the same and changing for the better.

this

Mio is kind, lovely sweet and endearing. she's also in love with Anon and seems would fight for him if she needed to.

which is why we can never have her. we are not Anon, Anon is but a shell and our real self is clad in red.

Mio is best girl. (well Natsumi is best girl but we burnt that bridge a long time ago) but she is not right girl. with Hecate dead maybe Joker doesn't deserve a Waifu.

It is a great disc, half as wide as the visible sky. Streaks of luminous white and blue pulse across it, from the centre to the rim - And back. It turns, slowly, rotating on its own axis; Structures resembling fan and leaves blooming like a cyclopean, abstract water lily from its surface, golden fans and petals shivering with internal motion.

The sky overhead sparks and flickers with lightning; A vast, translucent umbrella of field energy-extending outwards from the great structure, unfurling itself in a dome that reaches down to anchor substations, shading the sky green.

-And above, the black moon. Closer than ever before, like a reflection of the great disc - So close, you can actually *see* the Hyades demenses that gather around it, forming tiny constellations of stars. There's something almost organic about the realm around you, about the filaments that tether the grand arc of the disc down like roots, spreading outwards eternally into an intricate bramble maze.

It's almost like-

> "What-"
> "It's *him*-"
> "...Really him?"
> "Right in front of-!"

There were exactly ten girls in the group that welcomed you, no more and no less. In front of you - In those strange, fragile forms that are not quite armour - there are eight Players.

Every one of them - Except for Mio and Shizuka - is a Player.

You intuit this all in the space of a second, your targeting sensors already locking on - It's second nature for the charging elements in your gauntlets to come alive, your Plasma Vulcans beginning to spin up in preparation...

Your Plasma Vulcans-

...They don't engage. A string of code flickers into existence across your HUD - The symbols translating, somehow, into...

<LIMITER ENGAGED>

You can't active your weapons. This place won't let you.

A green shimmer, at the edge of your vision. Cybele's Emblem fumes with light, brighter than you've ever seen before - Shedding a constant, emerald glow, motes of radiance drifting skyward. It's echoed by the marks the Players before you bear; Simplified, somehow, ubiquitous - Identification of some kind, instead of a Hyades's favour.

"Joker-" Even filtered, you can hear distinct relief in Bishamon's voice - In full armour, his arms folded impassively over his chest, he *still* manages to look uncomfortable...His discomfort communicated in the stiffness of his stance, already surrounded by the others.

Heads turn, in your direction; A distinct murmur of curiosity hanging in the air, as the first Player - VANITY ORCHID - draws closer. She's a slender, almost delicate Player the colour of her namesake - Something like petals fanning out from her back.

"You're...*Really* him," she murmurs, with a touch of awe - You can feel her gaze sliding over you, taking in your weapons, the sweep of your Assault Shroud, the vanes of your Tempest Scrander.

"You - You're the Red Joker, aren't you?"

Bishamon takes advantage of their momentary distraction - He's at your side in two long strides, his Hyades mark shedding a blue radiance.

"Joker...What *is* this place? What's...What's happening?"

His hands drop to the paired sword hilts on his waist - But he doesn't pull them free.

You're not sure if he can.

His voice lowers; "-Are your weapons working?"

[ ] "No. You?"
[ ] "-I don't think they're here to fight us."

Bishamon nods, gravely - You see him visibly struggle to relax, still ill at ease...But at least he brings his hands away from his (unusuable) swords.

"...I've never heard of a non-combat zone before..." he says, dubiously.

As a matter of fact - Neither have you.

"-Of course not!" He says, too quickly. Then: "...Yes."

"Maybe they're *all* here," Bishamon rumbles - He doesn't sound particularly sure, all the same. "...This is - A higher proportion than I expected." It seems Kouichi has a talent for understatement; Especially in a case like this.

> [X] "-Does their armour look strange to you?"

The vanes of his kabuto helm shift, a mechanical equivalent of a shrug - He turns his head, with the faint whirr of acutators. "...Like the other two," Bishamon says, realization slowly dawning. "When you fought Cyg-"

> [X] "Let me handle the talking."
>>32218507

"Um-" Orchid takes a step back, looking from side-to-side as if for support; "...I'm not sure I understand, but..."

"Joker-kun~!" A form cannons into you from behind - Too light to check your step, nearly causing her to rebound. It's a very human gesture, completely at odds with the pale yellow limbs that struggle to wrap around you...Stymied by the shape of your Tempest Scrander, before she withdraws to a more modest distance.

Chiffon Doll.

"I knew it - I *knew* you'd be here!" There's an airy delight to Chiffon's words, as she straightens; Your Joker icon gleaming on the raised curve of her pauldron, displaying it like a trophy. "...See, I *told* you he'd be here - The ladies are *calling* them here. They can't stay away!"

Her - rather triumphant - words are directed at PEARL CAPRICE and LAGOON DOLPHIN; Blush-pink and sky-blue respectively, as she tries to hook her arm in yours. "-It wasn't a lie, you see? He gave me this, too~!"

"-Chiffon, calm down." Pearl makes a placating gesture - Her voice is cultured, a little cool; Without White Licorice around, she's the one to rein Chiffon in. "All right, I may have been a little hasty..."

"That's not what you said...meanie."

You're fairly certain Chiffon is trying to stick her tongue out at her counterpart - A gesture whose subtlety is (Of course) entirely lost in all-enclosing Player armour. At your side, Bishamon lets out a - Faintly amused - "Hmmmnh."

...Well, at least he's enjoying himself. It's only for a moment, however; He stiffens, a heartbeat later, as VELVET DROSSEL approaches. There's a subtle grace to her lissome form, as she folds her arms around her cuirass;

"...I apologize for the unsightly display," she says, bowing her head.

"Chiffon can be...excitable."

"Hey, which one do you think they are? The lazy one? The shaggy-looking one? The dangerous one?" Chiffon's chattering on happily, completely oblivious, as she looks up at Bishamon.

> [X] "Quite the welcoming commitee."

"-It is." Velvet takes in the others, at a look - They've talking to Bishamon, as he stands as stock-still as a statue; Pearl Caprice reaches out, to brush her hand against his paired swords - As if on a dare - and he doesn't quite flinch away, rather distracted and off-balance by the attention he's receiving.

"We've been looking forward to it, after all. All of us." She shoots you a sharply slanting glance, one that's somehow conspirational. "And your ladies too, I think. For a long time."

Velvet hesitates; Lights flicker, in the eyeslits of her tapering helmet. "Less than a year," she says, at last. "-But this is the first time we've had visitors...So many at once, at least. This place...We didn't use to be able to leave. People didn't use to be able to come in..."

She falters, as if she's said too much. "...You'll have to ask someone else, sorry. I don't know more than that."

> "How long until Convergence?"

Dead silence. An absolute quiet descends - Even the Players flocking around Bishamon go quiet; Momentarily, you have their full, undivided attention.

"I'm...not sure," Velvet admits. She looks up, at the black moon overhead - Something faintly uneasy in her stance. "But soon, I think. Very soon..." Anticipation and trepidation war in her voice - It's impossible to tell which wins out.

"Joker-"

A brilliant blue glow catches your eye, as you turn - Bishamon's shout of alarm echoing in the square. He's lit up from within, his Hyades mark glowing with the stark light of a star - The light pulsing like the beat of a luminous heart. He has his hands out before him, as a ripple runs through the world...A tremor, as a great shadow spreads across the earth.

"Joker, I'm-"

"-It's starting."

Thunder sounds, as if the sky is splitting. Lightning flares across the clouds, back-lighting them; The pulsing discharges making it look as if the clouds are on fire from within. The other Players are pointing upwards, looking up-

It's a *demense*. Not one, but two - Twin stars, merging, interlocking, fusing into one...

And where they meet, light flares between them, like a supernova. Like universes colliding, the electronic buzz of their contact heralding the storm.

"I think-" Bishamon says; He starts, his words hushed, as if things are only beginning to make sense to him.

"...I think she's *calling* me."

He nods, and is gone.

Around you, the other Players dissolve - Into whirling cyclones of light, a shower of sparks that twist and leap skywards in a swirl of photons - Chiffon is one of the last to go, her face turned upwards...Before her form shivers apart in dancing fireflies of sun-bright radiance-

And then you.

Beneath you - An infinite, depthless blue. A ripple, across a lake...

-Then a flicker of screen-tearing static, a harsh buzz that saws into the very core of your being. Momentarily, there's another landscape overlaid over this one; A landscape with a tall, proud pagoda reaching towards crimson skies, the brief, passing impression of a lantern-illuminated bridge over dark waters...

Another flicker. Temple, then ocean. Temple, ocean.

-Ocean-

You get your bearings. You stand on a ring platform, a vast cupola of crystal-glass petals ribbed together with steel spars that curve up to form a mast at the apex high above. The entire structure roates, turning slightly one way than the other; There's a strange doubling effect, as it overlaps with another...But imperfectly.

The surface of the platform is black, like basalt, like onyx. You register...

Other symbols, other marks, shed all the colours of nightmare. There are...More Players than you've ever seen in one place, lining the ring's circumference - Most are strange, graceful forms, bearing an obvious kinship to Chiffon Doll and White Licorice; There are a *lot* of them, too many to count immediately.

Half of the school? Most of it?

All of them?

The others - They're like you. UTOPIA RULER, resplendent in gold and silver; ADAMANT AEGIS, with a shield locked to his left arm. STEEL CRUSADER, his armour polished to a mirror sheen - Both hands resting on a greatsword buried point-first in the ground. You think, for the fraction of a second, that you glimpse IRON OGRE...

Pale yellow light twists and coalesces into Chiffon Doll's form - A starburst of violet becomes Velvet Drossel. And below, far, far below, within the glassy sphere...

Bishamon materializes. When he hits the surface, a huge plume of water splashes upwards in a spontaneous geyser-

A ripple of laughter arises from the outer ring.

"Oh-" Chiffon Doll presses a hand to her speakers - Trying to smother a giggle and failing, her shoulders trembling in delight.

"...Can your friend swim~?" she says, sounding dubious, now - "If he can't, he's in a lot of trouble..."

No Kraken. Where is he?

> [X] "-What's happening? I thought I saw *two* stages, not one."

When your attention turns back to her, Chiffon starts - "Ah, their demenses are merging," she says, with a vaguely scholarly air; "-See, it's a fight for the Hyades, too...They're trying to shape the Stage to give an advantage."

She leans forward, to get a better view: "...But your friend's Hyades must be especially weak; The other one has *total* control over the field. At this rate..."

Her words are cut off, as another plume of water erupts; Bishamon rises from the water, suspended on twin plumes of superheated air. It's not flight, not really - He hovers, instead of taking to the skies; The distortion of his passage curving through the endless blue beneath him.

> [X] "What's he up against?"

"I...don't know. The other one must hid - Look!"

A wave gathers. It rolls across the surface with majestic force, rising into a towering wall of water; Gathering speed, gathering momentum, as it speeds towards Bishamon - An undulating, frothing swell, sweeping forward unstoppably-

Starbursts of light flicker at Bishamon's kabuto helm. A hail of head Vulcan tracers punch through the water, as he accelerates away from the tide; He doesn't stop firing, his head turning from side-to-side, strafing it with gunfire...

And then a 'X' carves through the wall of water, slashing it aside. A form surges through - Black, glistening, with the look of some deep-sea predator - Trident hissing with motes of crackling force, as it carves towards Bishamon.

A name: AQUA MERROW

>She leans forward, to get a better view: "...But your friend's Hyades must be especially weak; The other one has *total* control over the field. At this rate..."
Well, shit.
I bet we will be impaled by stone spikes or something.

Then again, this means we and Bishamon are bros in having weak Hyades.
>>
>>32219710
Or we're going to see Bishamon's power in action. Weak Hyade, strong ability?
>>
>>32219656

There's a ripple of distortion - A violent discharge, as the trident-weapon fires, speeding across the narrow distance like a harpoon. Bishamon slashes - And mid-stroke, the unfurling length *twists* to avoid him; It coils around his wrist like a serpent, wrenching him off-balance...

And Aqua Merrow cracks the unfurling spear like a whip, and hurls Bishamon across the churning surface of the ocean. He hits the water at an angle - Skidding and tumbling, shards of black plate scattering in all directions; One horn of his helmet joins the debris plume, as he's propelled by immense velocity - A stone skipped across a lake.

Somehow, he rights him with a plume of hissing thrust - An azoic glow gathering around Aqua Merrow's chest sphere; It erupts outwards, in a focused jet, a high-pressure ray that shears across the surface like a blade. Bishamon jets to the side to avoid it; He's firing back, turning his momentum into a violent rotation - His blade slices the air in a blurred arc-

A powerful linear distortion surges forth, invisibly fast. It slices across Merrow - The other Player reels back, the blast guttering out as a clean slice shows through his armour; The edges of the cut slide apart, as Aqua Merrow clamps one hand across the gouging wound. Bishamon closes in for the kill, his blades crossing in an 'X', speeding directly towards his opponent...

And Merrow's hand convulses on his trident, and the unfurling length cracks into Bishamon's cuirass and swats him aside. It punches him back, so hard he's hurled through the air - Before he can recover, the cable snaps taut around him - Retracting, wrenching him in close - just long enough for a giant fist of water to smash down on him with pummeling force, driving him down, down into the churning waves.

"...He's finished," Chiffon mutters - "At this rate-"

> [X] "What did you mean 'total control'?"

"The ladies - They can anything they want in here, you see? So this one...She's giving her champion an advantage. Making this place somewhere he can go all-out..."

Forms move beneath the water - Blurred, black shapes, struggling, striking, diminishing from view.

> [X] "Could a Hyades with total control stab someone with stone spikes?"

"Ah-" Chiffon turns her pale mask towards you - As if struck by a sudden thought. "...They could," she concedes. "But...Something like that - It's hard. Hurting someone directly...It tires them out. But making the place like *this*...That's easier."

The surface of the ocean goes placid, except for the faint ripples playing across the waters. For a long, long moment, the only sound is the ebb and play of the surf.

> [X] "Not yet."

The ocean begins to froth. To churn. To foam-

An explosion of white water, rising fifty meters into the air. Sheets of spray pluming from the twisting geyser, the eruption coming with the detonating force of an artillery barrage. Tidal waves smash out on all sides, the surface water blitzing into drizzle; A red-streaked cyclone ploughing upwards through the sheeting rain, the violent rotation churning the waters around it to froth-

Aqua Merrow breaks the surface first. Deep gashes scour his armour - He's not dodging, or evading, or repositioning himself, as he rides the rising plume. He's flat-out *running*, firing frantic, half-cohered blasts from his cutting beam - Blasts that rip through the swirling stormwall, twisting through the rising maelstorm of lacerating winds.

Bishamon is right behind him.

It occurs to you, at this point, that you've never seen Bishamon fight. Not really; In the Hollow Sun, you were fighting too - And that tends to focus the mind wonderfully.

But Aqua Merrow, unknowingly or not, has woken something up - Something best left slumbering. He's made Bishamon angry, genuinely angry, spiking him out of his slow-burn good nature into a killing fury.

He's given Bishamon permission to unseal the shielding around his furnace heart, and all his fears and all his doubts are fuel for its nuclear flame.

They exchange blows - A dozen, a *hundred* - in the space of a few seconds, the intensity and velocity of Bishamon's twinned blades ramping up - Sixteen per second, eighteen, twenty - until his opponent's form smokes from the relentless impacts, until he overloads Aqua Merrow's defense.

The trident comes up-

-slice-

And splits in half, as the Apex Blade shears through it and splits it like cordwood.

-slice-

Aqua Merrow loses all his limbs, the edges of the cuts growing molten - Leaving a thrashing, twitching torso still in the process of falling, disjointed segments plunging into the water in fist-sized chunks-

Bishamon's right arm draws back, to piston one razor-sharp sword through Aqua Merrow's heart, the deathstroke that will very likely shear him in half...

The sword comes down.

And suddenly, without any warning, there's someone in the way.

A woman. Flowing hair, in long, wavy tresses. A blue gown that falls all the way to her feet, long sleeves feathering out like wings. And the most startling, beautiful blue eyes you've ever seen - Blue eyes that are wide with shock and simple surprise, as Bishamon's sword rams into her chest, right under the sternum, and lifts her like a fish on a hook.

Her mouth opens and closes rapidly, in utter surprise. You hear an uncohered shout, raw and full of hurt, as Aqua Merrow thrashes in denial - The burning blue symbol on his chest unwinding, fading out, twisting away in long strands...

Bishamon is sickened. You can see it in the way he hesitates, at the way he flinches back from the pale hands clutching at the impaling blade, for succour or for mercy.

-He can't let go. A shudder courses through him, as a gasp comes up from above - Chiffon watches, intent, as Velvet flinches back, her hand covering her mouth. Somewhere, there are screams. Somewhere, there is a cheer.

And Bishamon - Still holding his victim off the ground on his sword - shaking so badly he can barely keep hold of the hilt - brings the Apex Blade up, and severs her neck with a single violent cross-blow.

The Hyades's body spasms, as she falls off the blade. Blood, not Essence at all, jets from the stump and gurgles from the gut wound; Her body falls back, into the dark embrace of the waters...Then down, down, down.

Bishamon stares.

He stares, hovering on wings of jetair, for a long time.

The curtain falls. The translucent walls of the demense begin to darken, as if the pall of night is descending. The edges of reality waver and blur; The ocean fading out, just long enough for you to glimpse the bridge of lights, lanterns wavering in an unseen breeze.

Dark.

"-Horrible..." Velvet murmurs - She can't look away.

"...I guess she really did love him, after all," Chiffon says - Her voice is low, muted, almost melancholy. "I can't understand it..."

"Him?" Chiffon sounds surprised, by your question. "-He's still alive. Since his Hyades is dead - There's no reason for him to be here any more."

> [X] "-I don't understand. Is she dead?"
> [X] "What the hell was that?"
> "Is it just me or did she not expect that to happen?"

"-She's dead."

Velvet's voice is flat, level again - As she passes a shaking hand over her mask.

"Velvet, you *know* she was going to die anyway..."

Velvet's chin twitches upward, and she says; "Yes."

She draws a slow breath - "...The fights are to eliminate the Hyades, you see? When their champion loses - When the Emblem is destroyed - they really die. The other one overwrites her completely; That's why the d-demenses are..."

Merging.

>>32220556

"-She didn't have to die like that," Chiffon adds. "She could have gone to sleep - Let herself be extinguished, and felt nothing at all. Just...gone out. Like a candle."

"But your friend-"

He was going to kill Merrow.

"That's why she died that way. Because at the end..."

"-Her wish, her *true* wish, was to protect him."

A silence descends.

> "Will the fights go on like this without pause?"

"I...I'm not sure," Velvet says, heavily. "This is - This is the first one I've seen." Then, rather shakily; "I didn't think it'd be so..."

A hitch to her breath. "-So horrible."

> [x] "What happens now?"

"-Now?"

Chiffon looks up at you - Her mask the colour of pale sunlight, of aged ivory.

"Now, Joker-kun..." she says, lightly - Glancing down at the darkened sphere below. "-We go back to school..."

"-And wait for your turn."

The slit of her mask curves in the faintest approximation of a smile, her oddly-jointed fingers splaying against your chest.

"Until then - Please keep me company, all right?"

"After all...I'm the one who likes you the most."

So, the thread still has some space.
How about discussing the possible environments that we might find ourselves in?

Vacuum:
- Heat dispersion won't work (However, the Hailfire Chaingun's heat beam might work)
- Scrander won't work
- No napalm
- No friction, meaning stronger fisting and possibly faster bits
- No sound (...How does Argus work? EM?)
- All energy-based attacks will be more efficient with nothing to disperse them, while bullets might have less power due to friction not heating them up, depending on enemy

- Burning Joker might actually cause us to burn, considering that the heat venting wouldn't do shit in a vacuum. Or the fire aura would be far bigger than in an atmosphere, to make dispersal more efficient.

Water:
- Scrander won't do shit and might actively fry us. In fact, we'd be best served to deactivate the damn thing to get a significantly smaller profile. Unfortunately, we would need advance warning for that, because it would be a *bad* idea to just leave a relic lying around the battlefield.
- Carnifex would be mandatory to counteract water resistance
- However, pressure differences might mean that we need all of our armor
- Energy and projectile weapons won't do shit, with photonic stuff being our best bet
- Crisis Arm might actually work, because it's based on gravity effects
- Muleta might add agility
- Napalm would again be pointless, unless we are fighting above the surface. Good luck getting there, though, unless we manage to fly without ever being submerged
- Burning Joker would behave weirdly

Forest:
- Lots of cover. If we had stealth, we could just break the enemy's neck.
- Our Argus system allows us to be aware of the enemy's position at all times. The Signal Booster might be a good investment. Or the Dirge Caster, if the enemy has superior sensors.
- Napalm will wreck everything, possibly us as well. We can fuck everything with our armament
- Bits can actually help, due to much cover, which allows them to attack unexpectedly
>>
By the way, WHERE WAS NATSUMI?
First it looked like only Hyades Champions can enter the stage.
And then suddenly THE ENTIRE FUCKING RED WORLD watched the match.

Did Kazuya fuck her and imbue her with his anti-Red aura or something?
>>
>>32221977

No, think about it carefully. ONLY Hyades Champions AND the Seisin girls were in the stage. The Seisin girls also have hyades marks of some kind.
>>
>>32222052

Reading comprehension:

>>32219476
>The others - They're like you. UTOPIA RULER, resplendent in gold and silver; ADAMANT AEGIS, with a shield locked to his left arm. STEEL CRUSADER, his armour polished to a mirror sheen - Both hands resting on a greatsword buried point-first in the ground. You think, for the fraction of a second, that you glimpse IRON OGRE...
>>
>>32222068

Iron Ogre also has a Hyades mark. So does Adamant Aegis. There's no reason to think that the others aren't hyades champions either.
>>
>>32222068

All that delicious essence
>>
>>32222104
So we'd rather murder the champions than their Hyades?

How about killing the guys that we don't know, while letting people like Iron Ogre survive?
>>
>>32222120

It makes no difference. If the champion dies, the hyades dies too. The champion doesn't have to die, but the hyades definently 100% will die in the fight.
>>
>>32222154
You are contradicting yourself.
It does make a difference if we murder Iron Ogre or just his Hyades. Because, as you said, the champion doesn't have to die.
>>
>>32222171

I thought you were saying that we kill the champions INSTEAD of the hyades, which isn't possible. But the problem is, even if we don't kill the champion, we'll have killed the love of his life.

We're fucked.
>>
Dayum, so Bishamon's got a crazy DPS output when he gets the Frenzy buff. How would the Joker Quest cast be sorted out in a classic RPG game?

Bishamon seems to be a Hybrid Tank/Assassin class.
Red Joker is...tricky, with so much weaponry at his disposal, I really don't know how to classify
Kraken is Tank with focus on STR
Rust Kaiser is obviously Tank with CON focus
>>
>>32223409

Joker is a jack of all trades, master of none. He simply has very good equipment.

All the other Players seem to have unique abilities, but Joker just has his guns.
>>
>>32223409
Joker is an allrounder/full combat guy
Other characters actually have non-combat applications, like AP's silver thread.
>>
>>32223468
We've been getting hints that Joker's not at full power for a while now. It's not that he's just got his guns, it's that he has ALL the guns.

>>32224049
I wonder. He's got the ability to interface with everything in the Red World, from the Hollow Sun to the GARM. I think his ability is to be able to do that.
>>
>>32224176
>I think his ability is to be able to do that.
That would make him Samus.
>>
>>32224176
>It's not that he's just got his guns, it's that he has ALL the guns.
We Nasu now.

Is JQOP secretly AC Guy?
>>
>>32224245
But without the backtracking. And he's only lost all his power-ups once, we think.

So yeah, something like that, except maybe even more so. He did virtual combat that one time in the Sun.
>>
>>32224440
He's also famous for his murder abilities and has unlimited ammo, with a rapid-fire weapon as his primary and missiles as his consumable secondary.

He heals from killing enemies and is agile, yet strong. And he did do a few dungeon crawls.
He's also not quite human anymore and, on a metaphysical level, a weird mashup of multiple beings.
>>
>>32224411
I used to wonder, but FSA ran at the same time as Joker for a while last year. The similarities are pretty funny though.

>>32224245
Speaking of Metroid, I hate whichever one of you jokers who compared the oil to Phazon. I wound up spending a day tracking down a more-than-retail-price copy of MPT and spending all the free time I'd intended to use for practical purposes playing Prime 1. You're a jerk.

That was me.

Also, the trilogy version is shit and casual. Get the Gamecube version.
>>
>>32224531
>I used to wonder, but FSA ran at the same time as Joker for a while last year. The similarities are pretty funny though.
I see some weird connection between AC Guy, JQOP and Nanosuitninja (The dude who made Crysis fun on Youtube).
Nanosuitninja and JQOP are both similar to AC Guy in some ways, while completely different from each other.
>>
>>32224559
I'd heard they cut some of the speed running stuff in 1. I'm honestly not too put out, just playing the game again is enough of a nostalgia bomb. Plus this is probably the only way I'm ever going to play Echoes, so.

>>32224569
Odd set of connections to make. Any reasons?
>>
>>32224622
>Plus this is probably the only way I'm ever going to play Echoes, so.
The issue with Echoes is that they made it laughably easy in Trilogy.
I guess that's a symptom of the Wii era. Everything was too easy on that damn console.

>>32224622
>Odd set of connections to make. Any reasons?
Well, Nanosuitninja and AC-Guy are similar in personality. Making promises for new content and then not delivering for ages. And then making new content, which tells you their outrageous story of how the dog pissed fire or something.
There's also the fact that Nano's Crysis videos are all about happy stabbing and explosions. Just like Fate/Stay Again.

And the JQ connection... I'm not even sure anymore what the fuck that reason was, but I always wondered if AC-Guy was secretly also writing JQ. Maybe it's the writing style or something.
>>
>>32224725
It's probably the motion controls making things easier. I remember reading that during play testing for Sin and Punishment 2 the testers said the game was too easy and asked for it to be harder. The Nintendo rep is on record as saying "You're complaining that a Treasure game is too easy?!" Also I just checked, apparently one boss in 2 was nerfed and Meta Ridley's AI was fixed and that's about it as far as difficulty is concerned.

Don't think that's it on AC-Guy and Joker, their style of updating is too different, and OP uses some speedwriting tricks that I haven't ever seen AC-Guy use. It's probably the tone. I admit I can't remember why I kept seeing the similarities anymore.
>>
>>32224972
>It's probably the motion controls making things easier.
If anything, they make things harder.
Zelda Twilight Princess was laughably easy, for example, but good luck getting the Nunchuk to realize that you are shaking it to make an attack.

And yeah, the biggest change was the boost guardian in Echoes and the invisible drone in MP1, which is no issue with freestyle aim.
They also removed the graphical effects from the guns and other immersive stuff.
>>
Anyway, let's gameplay discussion and more Phazon.

Phazon was funny for me as a C&C fan. It starts off as this weird mutagen that doesn't have any agency of its own and then turns into a self-aware force that actively mutates everything.
In contrast to that, Tiberium started off as a mysterious substance with some really quirky characteristics and then turned into huge green rocks.

I wonder if killing the Black Joker destroys all the blood.
>>
>>32225172
I hope so, otherwise we have to kill every Corrector individually.

Going over the guide, do we have any idea what a Quake Cannon is? Because it's capitalized. That always means good things.

Next thread's research: Converter and Emitters sound good?
>>
>>32223409
Rust Kaiser is "you die" class. Srsly. If JQOP has ever fudged rolls in our favour, its when we fluked out "killing" him. 'Cept now he's more bigger.

I'd actually like to know a bit more about the system now. Can players play Collectors/Black Joker aligned characters?
>>
>>32225880
>Next thread's research: Converter and Emitters sound good?
I'll think about that when I'm not about to go to sleep.

A Quake Cannon is likely something that works with vibrations. Or maybe like the Quake item in Wipeout.
>>
>>32225880
I think so. The shield and infuser should also be considered.
