Stress: 5/100
Sanity: 98/100
HP: 5/13
PP: 13/13

You’re feeling better than you were yesterday. You even managed to have a night’s sleep without nightmares. Despite your many band-aids and sore joints, you’re good enough on your feet that you’ve been up and about. Everybody else is out and about – Cassandra has work, Harvey has school, and you haven’t seen Isaac since last night. Given that it’s ten o’clock and you’re still lazing around in your PJs, you’re fairly certain nobody’s asking if you want to go to school today, which is fine with you.

You feel different after yesterday. More powerful. It’s a good different. Maybe it was the killing, maybe it was your generous use of your abilities, maybe it was exacting vengeance, but you’ve definitely grown stronger in a kind of subtle way. You feel that you can do things you couldn’t do before. You’ve also changed somewhat in non-subtle ways. Now, along with claws, your teeth can change as well, and it’s not just so that they’re sharper. When you were poking your slightly elongated canines in the mirror, you found your gums secrete some kind of weird, glossy fluid right at the base. You’re certain it’s poisonous, but you don’t have a method to determine how strong it is. You secretly hope it’s at least as bad as a cobra’s.
>>
>>32238330

The weird issue from last night with your skin getting all pale and veiny has resolved itself, but you find that you’re able to bring it back when you want to. It’s kind of like your claws, manifesting when you will it to. This worries you, but the cool factor drowns out the worry factor. So long as you’re in control, you’re game for anything.

Before Cassandra went out, she said Rowan would be getting out of the hospital today. Apparently there wasn’t anything too broken with her to warrant her staying there any longer than one night. She’s going to be back at eleven or so to pick you up. You and Ro have reached some level of understanding, and you want to be there when she gets out, even though you are the reason she went in in the first place.

Having nothing better to do with yourself, you stretch out on the living room sofa and read yesterday’s paper. All of it. You’re glad you did, because when you get to the obituary section, you see a familiar face and name. Benjamin Cook. Monster’s funeral is today, at three. You grab a piece of paper and write down the information, then head up to change your clothes into something street appropriate. You will be there.
>>
>>32238343

You spend the next while sitting on the edge of your bed, looking at the worn Polaroid of you and Ben when you both had marshmallows stuffed in your mouths. You really wish you had a different picture. You’d always just assumed you’d get a better one sometime. You feel a wave of bitterness at the thought. Past you was stupid. (+2 Stress: 7/100)

You hear a car horn from outside. Sounds like Cassandra is back to pick you up.

You scowl and put your photo away. Before heading out, you make sure to slip your switchblade into your back pocket, just in case. Thankfully Isaac recovered it somehow. You walk out to the curb and climb into the minivan, taking a seat up front.

“I’m glad I didn’t wake you up earlier,” Cassandra says, taking a second to adjust her tinted glasses from where they’d slipped down her nose. “You still look tired. How are you feeling?”

>Like I got hit by a truck.
>Like I look.
>Better. Kind of.
>I’ve got fangs now. Cool, right?
>Whatever. Let’s pick up Rowan.
>Hey. There’s someplace I have to be later.

>>32238361

You have new abilities!

>Venomous Fangs: Sierra's teeth can sharpen to points, at will. Her canines become slightly elongated, and secrete a venom with unknown properties. Her bite can crack through many types of material. >Unnerving Countenance: Sierra's veins become darker than usual, and show through her skin. Her eyes darken and her features become more gaunt, and her skin takes on a deathly pallor. She can hide or exhibit these traits at will, which features many may find unsettling or even frightening.

Also, your powers have changed. Choose two new abilities. Voting shall be ongoing.

--Corrupt
>Fill an object with hate, causing it to become untouchable for a period of time.
--Shadow Grasp
>Compress shadows into tangible material that can physically interact with surroundings.
--Uncanny Reflexes
>You’re quicker with your hands. Sometimes it seems as if everything is moving in slow motion.
--Terrorizing Glare
>Make eye contact with a target, filling it with horrific, all-consuming fear.
--Active Regeneration
>Spend 10 PP. Gain 1 HP. This is equivalent to 1 HP/hour if Sierra is left to regenerate power on her own.
>>
>>32238376

Fo sure.

Before I pick a second, would buying Active Regen lead to a better regen unlocking during the next round of power getting?

--Terrorizing Glare
Can be useful, also fun for the MC
>>
>>32238397

It's necessary for higher tiers of regeneration, but Sierra will have to increase in level before those unlock.

Anyway, they all lead to things, so don't worry about it too much.

I think they should know.

Could use a more subtle power too, in addition to the other one.

Though I have to say that going full combat could be cool too.

>>32238376
The shadow sneaking thing was probably our most useful power, so I would like to get more shadow stuff.
>Shadow Grasp

And then I'm not really sure if I want the regeneration or the reflexes. Regen is good, but this level is only good for out of combat healing. Reflexes are cool as fuck. Matrix and shit, yo. The terrorizing glare looks good as well; like a Sap Will that doesn't use PP and induces fear instead of depression. Or does it cost PP? Meh. Either way, looks cool. Corrupt is also good. Looks bad at first glance, but it would make it impossible to steal a gun from Sierra. "Oh, you wanna take my gun? Too bad. It's full of HATE."

Uhh. I guess just put me down for shadows and then whatever else is cool for the second power.

Then I'll go with the regen as my second pick (shadow grasp was the first).

I'd be cool with Uncanny Reflexes too, though. Sorry if being indecisive and all....

Err. I'll roll a 1d2 for my second pick.
1- Regen
2- Reflexes

The drawback is that the Hallows have verwelken issues. Inferni seems far more likely to be crazy problems.
>>

They do, but in addition to that, didn't Sierra get sanity meter after using shadow powers excessively? And Isaac explained that most verwelken are insane.

So maybe the more shadow powers Sierra uses, the higher the danger of losing it for good?

I've nothing to back this up though. Too much paranoia?

Generic buffs are always useful, especially stuff that we don't have to spend points activating, like Uncanny Reflexes.

I don't think Shadow Grasp will be that solid. It's a 'tangible material that can interact with our surroundings.' I expect a single point of damage is all it takes to turn it back to normal shadow.

“Kind of crappy, in a better kind of way,” you say flatly. “I got cobra fangs now though. Check it.” You bare your teeth at Cassandra.

Cassandra takes a second to process what she’s seeing. “That’s charming,” she says. You can tell though that she’s a little worried, probably because it wouldn’t be easy to blend in when you have freaking shark teeth.

“Keep your pants on, I can control it.” you say, making your teeth normal again. “It’s whatever. Let’s go get Rowan.”

As you drive to the hospital, the information you wrote down and stuffed in your pocket keeps coming to mind. While you could manage to get there on your own with public transportation, you don’t feel so hot walking around and doing a bunch of physical type stuff just yet. “Hey uh. Cassandra? There’s someplace I gotta be later.”

Cassandra raises her eyebrows, keeping her eyes on the road. “Oh? Do you need a ride? You can borrow the van if you need to.” Thankfully she doesn’t pry. The situation is complicated, and you don’t know if you want to talk about it.

Seeing that you do not have a license, and after your close brushes with automotive death last night, you don’t think that would be wise. “I’d ask for a ride, you know, if you’re offering I guess.”

Cassandra laughs lightly. “I am offering.”

You nod then, in agreement. “Okay then.”

>Uncanny Reflexes.

Active regen would be nice, but right now the PP cost is a bit too high for it to be generally useful without us getting far more efficient at absorbing PP as we go along in combat.

We probably want to be careful about using shadow stuff given the whole "insane" thing that affects most users, at least until we can learn more about it.
>>

Thing to lighten the mood.

After a moment of awkward silence?
>It’s actually kind of a funeral thing.

I wanna tell them we're verlwelken. Is this a bad idea? Or a really bad one?
>>
>>32238791
>Is this a bad idea? Or a really bad one?
It's a CRAZY bad idea.

But we should probably tell them anyway. Cassandra, especially, would probably handle it decently well.
>>
>>32238791
We should let it slide in slowly, give them time you know?
>>
>>32238808
>>32238827
I guess that makes sense, yeah. Isaac would probably find the whole thing most distressing.
>>
>>32238782
The "insane" thing affects most hellborn in general. I'm willing to bet that the 'verwelken hellborn being really rare and extra crazy' thing has less to do with power use and more to do with their physiology generally isolating them and preventing any attempts at being raised as a normal human. Tweeds thought it was weird that Sierra hadn't been burned to death by the sun. Living like a vampire from birth can't be good for ya.
>>
>>32238782
insane thing?
>>
>>32238791
>>32238808
>>32238827
>>32238843
How do we know they didn't already see us using our shadow powers when we lost it? It's already established we tangled with Ro; Isaac might have seen us as well, and she could tell him even if he didn't. She has no reason to keep it a secret.
>>
>>32238873
Like I said, it's an INSANELY bad idea to tell them, but we probably should anyway. Especially at this point.
>>
>>32238848
I guess being mixed blood is a good thing. Burning shadow demon-vampire is a pretty cool deal. On the field anyway.
>>
>>32238873
That's why we drag Issac or Rowan to one side and break it to him, see how they react.

Rolled 44

>It’s actually kind of a funeral thing.
>What’s Borislav’s deal? He’s like, Dr. Dolittle or something?
>>
So, can we control the poison thing? I mean, we probably want to kiss a boy someday, or something, when our life is less completely fucked up. It would be pretty bad if our saliva is effectively poisonous.
>>
>>32238849
Tweed said that Verwelken hellborn are generally unstable or just straight up die. That anon is trying to use that to say that the shadow powers might be bad or something, but Sierra still being alive at all and not completely 100% crazy shows that she didn't get slammed with the instability.
>>
>>32238887
Can you or anyone explain to me why it's such a bad idea? I'm not seeing it.
>>
>>32238873
Good point. It's likely going berserk triggered verwelken instead (or in addition to) our usual claws and hellfire. I mean, we looked like a corpse with all them veins and "cobra-teeth", and a guy's throat was ripped open so we likely drank some delicious red B+.
>>
>>32238900
Yes, we can control it.

But that doesn't matter anyway. Venom is fine to ingest. Poison is not.
>>
>>32238361
>worn Polaroid of you and Ben

At some point we should ask if they have a scanner and get a reprint of this.

And get it laminated too.
>>
>>32238791

It would be best to tell them rather than get caught when something goes to shit, but it needs to be broken veeeeeeeeery carefully and gently. And probably not right now.

Isaac most likely has suspicions given that we clearly didn't know shit about demons and so forth, but asked questions about shadow magic anyway while asking what type we were. The whole "killed his dad" thing would be a serious issue though, and Rowan seems fairly emotional about it in particular.

When it does come out, emphasis should probably be placed on how it seems to only be a tiny part of our background compared to the flames n' fear parts, going by how we can survive light just fine barring a tendency to sunburn quickly and how the other powers seem more numerous and well developed to begin with.

Given our latent nerdiness, a small part of us is probably secretly hoping it all works out with the shadow powers since this superhero team seems to be sorely lacking a Nightcrawler or Batman member.
>>
>>32238910
It stems from Isaac explaining how velwelken are bad nasty guys who are insane. And one killed his father, though there might be even more to it.

Anons - me included - worry that Isaac (and the rest of the family) will shun the fuck out of Sierra when they find out.
>>
>>32238910
Because the family is only barely able to look past our demonic heritage. Also being descended from the type that killed the kids' grandfather will just make tensions worse.

But we really should bring it out into the open.
>>
>>32238922
>Yes, we can control it.
We can control the tooth sharpening. No sign on whether or not we can control the venom.

>Venom is fine to ingest. Poison is not.
ANIMAL venom is fine to ingest. Who knows what demon venom does to someone's digestive tract and mucus membranes? Plus, there's almost always some kind of micro-tear somewhere in the mouth.
>>
>>32238950
But but humans are animals AND demons are people TOO. Demon rights mang don't discriminate
>>
Guys who are saying that Verwelkens are vampires, no. They're not. They only share the sun weakness with them. They're closer to just straight shadow monsters.

Belphegorans are the ones that are closest to Vampires in what they actually do.

>You see no harm in confirming his suspicion. “Yeah, actually. What about the Belphegoran part?”

>He searches a little bit to find a suitable explanation for you. “They’re closest to vampires,” he says. “Not their weaknesses, but their powers.

The veiny stuff and the blood drinking was from the Belphegoran parts, which the Hallows already know we are.
>>
>>32238930
Different anon, but I'm sure that if we explain it properly, they'd have as much reason to hate us for being part verwelken as we would any random infernus for Monster's death. If.

I suspect Isaac already suspects anyway, after we asked about shadow powers out of the blue.
>>
>>32238964
Man, I'm just trying to make sure that we'll be able to maybe someday kinda kiss a boy without poisoning him. We need to know whether or not we need to use protection - you know, in the hypothetical chance that we might someday be un-fucked-up-enough to have a romantic life. As unlikely as they might be.
>>
>>32238992
There's no way Isaac doesn't suspect. He probably only pulled that "oh you must have seen a Verwelken on the streets somewhere [nervous laughter]" thing so that Rowan wouldn't freak out on us even more.
>>
>>32238977
Oh shit. I guess I mixed them up.

Thanks for pointing that out.
>>
>>32238930
>>32238934
Yeah, but they're going to find out eventually. Telling them now will be far better than them finding out on their own.

In addition, I wouldn't say they're barely able to accept us. They've been ridiculously accepting. They also seem reasonable enough to not judge us based on who our parents were and what powers we inherited from them.
>>
>>32238977
Oh, well that's relieving.
>>
>>32238995
Time to buy some fang-condoms!
>>
>>32239027
Again, I'm saying it's a bad idea and we should do it anyway. I'm not disagreeing that we should do it.

You're arguing about my motive while agreeing on the action we should take.

Just shut the fuck up already.
>>
>>32239007
Then wouldn't attempting to hide it only cause more suspicion and disagreements later on? Not that we should just blurt it out of nowhere; obviously we wait for a good time to drop the bomb. Asking Rowan what we actually did when in rage mode is probably a good idea too.
>>
>>32239027
Oh yeah, definitely. I agree we should tell them.

I just hope shit doesn't hit the fan at mach 5 when we do.
>>
>>32239044
An oral condom is an actual thing for people who have, or worry about, herpes. If we can't control the flow of venom from our gums, we'll probably need one if we ever want to maybe someday kiss a boy or something.
>>
The fangs don't secrete venom unless they're actually extended as fangs. Sierra can control the fang extension unless she's super angry.

This talk of teeth condoms is silly.
>>
>>32239049
It's not even a bad idea though, it's a good idea. Maybe even a great one.
>>
>>32239059
I did not need to know that. Sounds nasty.

Seriously though, I immediately assumed that both the fangs themselves and venom production are within conscious control.

>>
>>32239102
Chill, it's a simple test. We could clearly see the venom being produced when our fangs were extended. We just need to look in the mirror when our fangs are retracted.
>>
>>32238930
We really REALLY want to avoid getting shunned as well. These are probably the only people who both have our backs and actually know anything about our problems that we've ever met, besides probably our parents. The fact that since staying with the Hallows Sierra has managed to start getting on top of a horrific nightmare that has plagued her for as long as she can remember gives them a very powerful positive association that would make her want to stay.

>>32239055
Sierra has generally been quite disturbed by a lot of her powers, reacting more or less like any normal person would to them. Being honest with her own fear and concern about them would probably do a lot to smooth things over.

Her comic reading makes a lot of sense as an effort to make her powers feel like a good thing because she's like the heroes in those stories, rather than like a monster because she heals/feels good when causing pain. Hoping that the dead guy earlier was a crab feels like she wants to make sure she directs the damage she does to people who deserve it.
>>
>>32239148
Yeah, nah, I'm totally on board to have a heterosexual female protagonist. There's plenty of other lesbian quests out there.

That said, I'm also voting hard against ANY romance/intimacy. She's way too fucked up - and knows it - for any of that kind of stuff right now.

Gross, he's like our big brother! He could have taken the relationship that way if he'd pushed for it, maybe, but that would ruin what they had.

At any rate, Sierra's into Rowan's dude friend, and not at all into Rowan. The QM made that perfectly clear to us.

We don't have full control over her characterization.

>>32239199

>But we will or most people will be upset
Bullshit. I'm quite happy with it, and considering the fact that we haven't had full control over her characterization this whole time, so are most of the players. She's a pre-existing character whose actions we can steer, but whose characterization and personality are pre-existent.

And she's been characterized as an extremely fucked up heterosexual teenage girl.

That's not a matter of us voting. That's just who the character we're exerting some control over already is.
>>
>>32239277

>>
>>32239396
>Sorry, fang condom fans.
Whoa, whoa, I was worried we would need an oral condom, not a fan of them. I'm just glad we can control it.

Not that we're ever likely to kiss a boy in the near future anyway. We're WAY too fucked up for that.
>>
>>32239189
She definitely thinks the powers are cool as fuck, but she's also recoiled from her appearance out of more than just surprise, and has dwelled over the fact that she gets a rush from violence and so on. It's a muted response, but in the same way that anyone with a bad childhood becomes jaded. When she's let go, it's come out that she's frightened of hurting people (blaming herself for driving people away, distraught that she might have crippled Rowan)

The fact that she is apparently a huge nerd who likes cape comics and Harry Potter (and likes the heros rather than cheering the villains) suggests that deep down she's pretty idealistic. That her response to Rowan being in hospital was to panic that now she'd have to be like Oracle is telling, since it suggests she's already internalized Rowan as being some sort of superhero character.

>You glance up at the guy with the deep voice. And then up some more, at a really tall dude in a camouflage hoodie and scuffed jeans. He has wavy brown hair and is close enough that you can tell he’s smoking – not in the literal way that you used to, but rather the figurative, much more attractive way that you much prefer. He’s got his backpack in hand, as if he were planning on sitting somewhere else, but instead held up to talk to you.

>You shake his hand, trying to keep your cool. It doesn’t really work very well, and a zap of static electricity stings your fingertip when your hands touch, highlighting your discomfort.

>“Sierra. Y’know, like the mountains.” Ugh. You shouldn’t have said that. Stupid.

Sierra likes boys, and gets uncomfortable and awkward when she's talking to a good-looking one. She's a fairly normal heterosexual teenage girl.

Well, Sierra was super uncomfortable around him,to the point it was kind of weird really. I'm used to characters being written as uncomfortably awkward around people they found attractive, but it just went on and on, and not in a cute, blushy way either.

Exactly. She's pretty blatantly into dudes, not ladies.
>>
Hey, she could be bi!
I'll just vote on that assumption until proven otherwise/it's ogre.
>>
>>32239628
She's already said she finds Rowan's body gross, and has expressed exactly zero interest in any ladies. It's a lot smarter to assume that a teenage girl is heterosexual if she's expressing interest in dudes and, if anything, finding female bodies explicitly unattractive.

Since that's, you know, literally the definition of being attracted to men and unattracted to women.

Exactly. How can you be into women and not find that sexy as hell?
>>
>>32239648
Indeed, many signs point to straightness. But not being attracted to Rowan doesn't really mean much, she could simply have a different type(s). And there's no reason to make assumptions at all - eventually we'll find out (unless it ends up irrelevant to the quest), so I might as well vote for my preferences until then.
>>
>>32239691
Damn, son. Would lift with.
>>
>>32239628
Listen, it's cool that you want an estsblished bisexual protag, but there's a lot of evidence in the narrative that suggest Siera's straight, and that's okay too. Sexual equality should go both ways
>>
>>32239691
I suppose it could be giving Seirra feelings of inadequacy, bu that seems unlikely for someone who can throw fire around like a tennis ball
>>
>>32239724
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with straightness though? I'm just saying I prefer reading female romance, and so until Sierra gets into a relationship or explicitly rules out ladies, I'll be making my votes in that direction. I don't have any illusion that it's particularly likely, and you're free to vote otherwise anon.

Nobody says anything for a couple minutes, and you drive in silence.

“The thing is actually this kind of funeral deal,” you say.

Cassandra says nothing, but you can tell she’s listening.

“For uh. A friend, I guess,” you add. “He died.” No duh, you think to yourself. Errgh. (+1 Stress: 8/100)

Cassandra glances at you. “When is it?”

“Three,” you say. “They’re doing it in a church in Hunter’s Point.“ You give her the rest of the details.

She nods. “All right.”

A while later, you pull up to the hospital. The two of you head in. Ro looks notably better from last night, though she’s still pretty beat up. (Rowan: 3/15 HP) Cassandra helps Rowan get out of bed, and gives her a bag with a change of clothes. Unsurprisingly, the shirt Cass brought for her daughter has a subtle, but very large DC logo on it.

A couple minutes later you’re all headed out, with Rowan in a wheelchair, even though she doesn’t really need it. She’s got one of those casts on her foot that you can walk around in, and her right arm is in a sling. When you reach the exit, Rowan abandons the wheel chair and gets her feet. She walks with effort, so you all walk slowly enough to match her pace.

You give up your front seat real estate for the cripple, and take up residence in the back.

“The bed felt like it was made out of plastic,” says Rowan. “I couldn’t go to sleep without feeling like I was being shrink-wrapped.”
>>
>>32239771
Well to be fair, it was overdue. I mean, a FeMC in a quest where romance wouldn't be unthinkable, and the QM didn't explicitly state her sexuality in the first thread? Don't think there's been one of those without at least slight shit-flinging and buttpain since...maybe Sorceress Quest?
>>
>>32239927

Cassandra smiles. “Sounds like you’re back to normal.”

“I never was out of being normal,” says Ro, somewhat resentfully. She puts on a stern expression when she continues. “I’m going to school tomorrow.”

“Um. Sweetie? You’re entitled to a couple days off after getting home from the hospital,” Cassandra reminds her.

“And have to make up all that classwork? Teachers pile it on like it’s their job,” she says, somewhat jokingly, but still sounding adamant in her decision. “Thanks, no thanks.”

“You sound exactly like your dad,” says Cassandra, chuckling. “Before we stop at home, the optometrist’s office called and said my new Irlen lenses came in. Does that sound okay with you two?”

“Whatever,” you say.

Rowan, however, glances back at you, and exchanges a weird kind of meaningful look with her mom. “Um. Hey, remember that time you thought I needed glasses?”

“Most kids don’t claim they can’t see the letters when they can’t read.”
>>
>>32239946

Rowan rolls her eyes. “I’m just saying, I think maybe I do need glasses. Can we have my eyes checked when we’re there?”

“If they’re not too busy,” Cassandra says. “Have you been having trouble reading?”

“Not exactly,” says Ro. “Hey Sierra. Maybe you can get your eyes checked while we’re there, too. Could be cool to find exactly how good your eyes can see.”

That's... not how that works. Your other senses just get more of your brainpower dedicated to analyzing them. They don't actually get any stronger. You just have sensitive ears.
>>
>>32240344
I always thought we actually had improved senses (including vision) but our eyes was just bad, meaning if/when we get glasses we will actually have better eyes than a normal person.

Shadow powers seem to be a fantastic defensive powerset for a group, given that you can create widea-area cover that could become physically protective in the future. Hell, if shadow grasp is strong enough the cover could reach out and drag friendlies to safety as well as offering some sort of wide area control. A Verwelken who wants you dead is a dangerous opponent but imagine how dangerous an entire group benefiting from the defensive buffs of a Verwelken would be.

“Didn’t get the phobia of doctors vibe from you,” you say, smirking to yourself. “Need me to hold your hand too?” Then you understand where this is coming from. “Oh wait. Ha ha. Good one,” you say. “This is about that thing in Physics, isn’t it. Well just FYI, I can hear through soundproof glass and smell the Cheez-its you ate before we picked you up, so guess what, my eyesight is pretty damn good too. If you want to know the numbers, you could have just asked straight up.”

Rowan suppresses a smile. What the hell’s she smiling about? “Oh. Okay. You’re so right, I just wanted to know how much better than me you are,” she says, keeping her voice suspiciously neutral.

“Yeah whatever, you sit there and smile at yourself,” you say, sitting back in your seat.

A few minutes later, you’re at the optometrist’s. Rowan has given up on the ‘I need glasses’ ruse since you called her out on it, but you’re prepared to get in that chair and put your money where your mouth is. The whole place is boring and quiet, which suits you just fine. Cassandra and Rowan wait in the room, Cass with her special tinted glasses box under arm, and Ro taking a seat nearby.

Dr. Howling comes in and runs you through all the generic stuff, asking about your eyesight and whatever, what you see and don’t see, and so on. Then he rotates out that big metal goggle thing and makes you look for it.
>>
>>32240406
None, we are such a mutt the contradiction of forms and bodies led to us looking baseline (human) but we are actually just fully demon
>>
>>32240508

Then you start reading the chart. First few rows are fine, and then you get to the little stuff, but it is what it is. And then he starts ‘better or worse’ing you and spinning those little glass optical things around.

“Better,” you say, seeing most of the chart snap into greater focus. It’s like you’re holding it up at arm’s length.

“Better, or worse?” asks Dr. Howling.

“Better?”

“Better, or worse?”

“Better, I guess,” you say. How much better does better get?

A couple repetitions later, the doctor asks, “Better, or worse?”

Everything snaps into crystal clarity. It’s like you’re at it with a magnifying glass or something. You can even see the tiniest bottom row, which you didn’t even know was there until you started doing the goggle thing. “Its good,” you say.

When the doctor pulls away, you look over at the Hallows. Cassandra has a shocked look on her face, while Rowan seems smug. As you walk out back into the lobby with all the display cases, you can’t shake the feeling that something is seriously off.

An assistant person comes out sits down across from you at a little table with a bunch of optical equipment on it, and rattles off some numbers about what you see in each eye. You don’t know what’s considered really good, but they sound like sizable numbers. And then the woman pulls a pair of glasses out of a little case and hands them to you. “Try these on,” she says.
>>
>>32240508
It turns out angels have eagle eyes or something, doesn't it.

You snort. “This is a joke, right?” you say, turning the glasses over in your hands. They look like something an old librarian lady would wear. “These things are crazy.”

“You can choose frames later, but this is near to your prescription,” says the woman.

You laugh to yourself and slide them on, and then swivel around in your chair to show your ridiculous appearance to Cassandra and Rowan. “So, how do I… look?” You trail off.

What the hell.

“So?” asks Cassandra. You can see her teeth from here. Every strand of hair. The slight crows feet at the edges of her eyes. “How are they?”

“I’ve been fucking blind all my life,” you say. Your eyes hurt a little at the strain the lenses put on them. Okay, you’ve knocked glasses in the past, but this is seriously big news. You take a moment to consider the leaves on a tree outside the window, as the wind rustles through it. It’s like you’re watching HD TV, but in real life. “Is this really how you guys see crap?” you ask, raising and lowering the glasses to compare the difference. You can even read the street signs across the street now. “I can literally read fucking everything I see!”

“Next time you can write your own notes,” Rowan says.

About a half hour later, you all walk out of the optomitrist’s, you wearing a pair of the least offensive pair of glasses you could find. You also have a box of contacts, though it was a living nightmare trying to get them in and out when you were trying them on. All courtesy of Cassandra’s wallet. You couldn’t turn it down or even bring yourself to argue – not after you’ve seen what you haven’t been seeing.

As you drive away, you keep your eyes on the front of the road. Man, driving looks way easy with glasses on. There are signs telling you how fast to go, lines to tell you where to stay, and you can see anyone around you by glancing in a mirror. You can even see people’s license plates if you needed to remember somebody’s car. It’s like everything has been designed with wearing glasses in mind.
>>
>>32240873

“How come nobody told me I have shitty mole-vision?” you say, bitter that you’ve been going without this sly advantage all this time.

“Didn’t you ever complain in class when you couldn’t see what the teacher was writing?” Rowan asks.

“Well yeah, but they always just told me to learn to read and shut up,” you say. You stopped complaining after that, and just wised up that you needed to sit up front. “I don’t know. Everyone just told me I sucked at school and words.” Little did you know, you were a latent powerhouse of vision all that time. If only your old schools knew the beast they had so unwisely taunted all those years.

“I don’t think anyone will tell you that anymore,” Cassandra tells you.

A while later, you’re sitting in the Hallow house watching TV. You’re not as interested in the programming as you are in seeing every inch of the picture in clarity. Rowan’s up in her room doing Rowan things, you guess, and Cassandra is off doing some kind of sewing work with blanks. The funeral is in a couple hours, so you have some time to kill.

I want to know what Rowan things are. If it's not too much of a sore topic, it'd be good to try and find out what happened after we bugged the fuck out.

Messing with shadow powers is just asking for trouble when Rowan inevitably barges in to see how we're doing

Given the option specified "find a dark place" rather than "go to the guest bedroom" like the option immediately below, I assumed we would have to go elsewhere. It's possible that our room is too bright in the day and the curtains aren't thick enough for us to really do much with the shadows.

I'm about to start reading this. Has this quest been taken over by /u/boating yet?

We are the straightest female quest protagonist in a while, like Hunzuu from Scorpion Girl Quest.
>>
>>32241417
No, not yet
So far the MC has seemed fairly into guys, and utterly uninterested in girls
>>
>>32241417
Not really. Probably not a good idea for Sierra to get involved in romance of any sort until the occasional homicidal fits of rage are dealt with somehow. Heaven help us all if she gets a boyfriend and he cheats on her or something.
>>
>>32241417
There's no romance. Hopefully it will stay that way.

What is BPQ, that Sailor Moon quest thing, Loli STALKER, the one KoF quest, probably that InuYasa Quest (because it's InuYasha, would /u/ even go near that?), etc..
There's never been more straight female protags than now, which isn't a bad thing, but pretending it's some rarity is dumb. Hell, the only lesbian ones I can think of are MGNQ and Pokemon quest, and of those MGNQ is ancient and PQ is technically bisexual. 2 quests against 6+

>>32241744
In contextt of the story, we did it to snap her out of whatever posession she had undergone that caused her to stab us. A lot. Needless to say it didn't take
>>
>>32241529
AOPH quest is also completely lesbian, but the real issue isn't that they've taken over a lot of quests, but that they try in every quest with a female protag. The ones listed are just where they've succeeded.
>>
Looks like I'm not getting back for another thirty minutes. Don't hate me too much.
>>
>>32241824
That is not about yurifags, that happens in every quest regardless. People try to find a girl to waifu in every quest with a male protag too. You just get irritated when they do it with a female.
Also, of course they will try in every quest. People try all kinds of shit in every quest. And some just like to hate as a part of bandwagon as in your case.
>>
>>32241920

That aside, Sierra is a teenage girl who draws pretty well, is awkward around (handome) guys, and has glasses. If we join the press club or whatever, we'll be motherfucking Clark Kent.

So why didn't anyone like Active Healing? It may be too slow to use in combat, but it's been a full day since the big fight. Since then, we've gone from 3 hp to 5 hp. If we had active healing we could be topped off at 13 already. Not only that, but Languid confirmed it would open the path to more advanced regen, like the ridiculous level Trevon had of points per round of combat. It just seems like it would have been a much better choice than any of the others to me.
>>
>>32242289
>says it could go either way
I smell a u/boater apologist, and not a good one
>>
>>32242356
It would be highly useful, but it's boring. Not showy enough.
>>
>>32242289
I think we should avoid romance because it's super in-character. No matter how much we'd like to kiss boys, we're CRAZY fucked up and in terrible situations at the moment. There is NO WAY IN HELL we want to add dating to that mix.
>>
>>32242356
I personally didn't fancy it because of the crazy high PP cost to get the regen going. I do realise that later on it would likely turn into something crazy good though.

It's more of liking the other powers more rather than disliking any of them. Also instant gratification.
>>
>>32242356
It got five votes - like from me - so it definitely had its supporters. It was the next-highest thing after reflexes.
>>
>>32242356
We can still pick it up later, and by then we'll have the PP to make greater use of it.

I'm not sure how efficient we are at collecting PP mid combat right now, which would make a difference. If we could reliably harvest 2 PP for every melee kill then it would be viable pretty quickly, as well as making power usage more viable in general. It's definitely at the top of the list for "GET ME NEXT" right now though.
>>
>>32242430
I would have taken it and reflexes. We already have darkness cloaking as a shadow power, and anything shadow isn't as useful when we have to keep it hidden from the Hallows. Plus the only way we can fast heal now is by drinking the blood of our enemies, which is a bit gross.

>>32242460
I don't think the PP cost for the first level of the skill will ever be efficient. Ever. It's like the other anons said, there's no instant gratification for this one. We gotta take it now, which opens up the more powerful version later.
>>
>>32242356
>So why didn't anyone like Active Healing?
Mostly because I was asleep when the vote was called. Definitely voting for it next time if we have the option, though. Regen would be super useful, even if it's pretty much just an out of combat thing at this point.
>>
>>32242487
>I would have taken it and reflexes. We already have darkness cloaking as a shadow power, and anything shadow isn't as useful when we have to keep it hidden from the Hallows. Plus the only way we can fast heal now is by drinking the blood of our enemies, which is a bit gross.
Yeah, I voted regen/reflexes. But it's whatever. People are way into the shadow shit at the moment because it's controversial (because we haven't told the Hallows about it yet).
>>
>>32242487
I wasn't under the impression that higher level powers in this quest would cost less to use; either way though it's topping my personal wishlist for our next new set.
>>
>>32242509
It's frustrating because that's exactly why we shouldn't take it though. Not only can we not use shadow skills in strong light without the PP cost becoming ridiculous, we can't use them at all in sight of the Hallows or anyone that would tell the Hallows. We shouldn't spend our sparse ability points on stuff we'll barely get the chance to use.
>>
>>32242534
Hey, people vote for what's on the forefront of their minds, and people are currently thinking about shadow demons and kissing boys. It's understandable, even if it isn't smart.
>>
Sure is 30 mins same as 60 mins.

I need to sleep soon. This suuucks.
>>
Well, I was under the impression that I would have more time today, but it looks like that was false. Should we just pick this up tomorrow? I'll only have a couple hours by the time I get back.
>>
>>32242526
Trevon was regenerating multiple points per round of combat. If he spent 10 for each point regained he either had far more PP than he had HP, or he had a more efficient skill that didn't require so much PP. Maybe even a passive regen skill that healed him without PP use.

>>32242550
Hey, that's what I'm thinking of too, it doesn't stop me from recognizing useful abilities.
>>
>>32242571
I'd rather have the couple hours PLUS picking it up again tomorrow, if that's in the cards. If not, then tomorrow's fine too.

>>
>>32242571

>>
Okay, I'm actually back now.

A couple notes:

I'll run for a couple more hours, probably up until we've got to go to the funeral.

On the issue of Sierra's sexuality: all the hints given in game aren't resolving the debate for the more hardcore among you, so even though this game isn't a dating sim and I am really loathe to decree anything out of character, I guess I have to come out and explicitly say that the MC is straight. Hopefully now we don't have a huge flame war on our hands every time I step away for more than ten minutes.

The time I'll be running tomorrow is 8:00 AM MST to whenever, since I have the day off.

You turn off the TV and close the door, making the family room go almost nearly black You leave it slightly ajar, so you have something to look at. You find you’re really enjoying looking at things now.

With all the crap you did with darkness yesterday, you think you’ve figured out how to do something a little bit cooler. You sit back down on the edge of the couch, and push the cup you’d been drinking out of to the center of the little table in front of you. It casts a dark shadow in the dim lighting. You’re not concerned about being interrupted by anybody, as you’d hear their footsteps long before they barged in on you.

You fix your concentration on the darkness, and become aware of its presence. Then you begin twisting and pushing it, contorting the cup’s shadow into different kinds of shapes and forms. Now, though, it’s time for what you wanted to try. You push some of your power into the darkness. Almost imperceptibly, it becomes denser. Eventually its density becomes such that it you feel it exerting pressure on the things around it. You then move the shadow from the table mostly up onto the cup.

The cup slides to the side a couple inches.
>>
>>32243908

Grinning, you put a little more effort into it. The cup suddenly jerks off the table, flies through the air, and bounces off the wall. It lands softly on the carpet – good thing you didn’t grab one of those glass cups. It takes a little more power and effort, but you manage to retried the cup from where it fell and replace it on the table, all without ever touching it or moving from your seat on the couch. The shadows do all. (-1 PP 12/13)

Walking out of the darkened family room, you feel pretty cool about your umbrakinesis. That’s almost like, telekinesis or something. Except you need to have the lights off? You probably wouldn’t be able to put on a very good magic show. Still, it’s something that gets your imagination going. The things you could do. (-5 Stress: 3/100)
>>
>>32243927

Thoughts of zany shadow antics aside for the time being, however, you find yourself curious as to what Rowan’s up to. While she seems like a cool enough person, you don’t actually know too much about her, except that she likes comic books and smiting demons. You feel (nearly) on good enough terms with her to be a little bit invasive, so of all the other things you could do instead, you decide to go bug her.

You head upstairs to her room. The door is slightly ajar, so you kind of push your way in. What you find is not totally unexpected. Ro has posters all over the place of superheroes and superhero movies, with Batman being chief among them. She’s got a ton of Batman paraphernalia all over the place. There’s a batgirl on batcycle action figure up on a shelf, a little bat signal lamp on her dresser, and a batman mask bust on her desk. There are boxes filled with stacks of comic books scattered about the floor, along with forgotten laundry, papers, and school materials.

Rowan sits atop her bed with laptop in lap, earbuds in ears, and eyes focused on her screen. She looks up at your entrance, and pulls out her earphones. “What’s up?” she asks.

You didn’t think this through. “Uh…”

“Just bored,” you say, leaning on the door frame. You make sure you’re not leaning on the shoulder that got shot. “Thought I’d see what you were up to, how you’re doing.”

“Just surfing the net,” she says.

“So,” you say, looking around at all the batman merchandise. “You like Batman.”

“Yep,” says Ro. “I have the best Halloween costume in my closet – check out the picture on the dresser.”

You stop yourself from walking over to have a closer look. You can actually see the things from where you’re standing. The picture features Rowan and a couple other people her age, all dressed up as various comic book characters. Predictably, Rowan is Batgirl, the kind of newish one with the purple sides – it’s a pretty damn authentic costume.

While no one else is familiar, you think you recognize the guy behind the red and gold Cyclops visor. You realize it’s Baron, the guy that was chatting you up in the library yesterday. He’s got a respectable Cyclops regalia going on.

“Where’d you get that crap?” you ask.

“Bought some, made some,” says Ro. “Mom’s good with making things.”

Feeling the ice break a little between you two, you decide to push a little bit more of a serious topic. “By the way, how’s the arm treating you?” You look back at her.

She runs her fingers over the cast. “It doesn’t bother me too much. They gave me enough drugs to keep me in a happy place for a while, and I’ve been hurt worse before.” She waves you forward.
>>
>>32244892

“Don’t feel like you have to stand around all day, come in.”

You enter, and find there’s an unoccupied beanbag chair by the bookcase. You pick your way over, making sure not to step on anything that looks valuable, and plop down. Her injuries still concern you, and you can’t bring yourself to change the topic that quickly. “How long are you going to be in that getup?”

“They said six weeks,” says Rowan, “but I’d only give it about one. My family doesn’t stay down for long.”

“Heh, me neither,” you say. “I mean, your mom just fished a bullet out of my shoulder last night, poured some hydrogen peroxide in there, stuck a band-aid on it and called it good. Probably won’t even scar.” Although a bullet scar would be pretty damn sweet.

“Low caliber aren’t too bad, as long as it’s just glancing,” Rowan agrees.

“Hey. Speaking of last night, what exactly went down between me and you?” you ask. “I don’t remember details.”

Rowan takes a second to think about it. “Well. We started heading to the back office, because that’s where we saw the Stygian run off to. Trevon got in our way for a little while, but he ran off after I opened up a can of divine fury on his ass,” she says. “Then we got pinned down by a couple of the Stygian’s bodyguards and another hellborn – let me tell you, they had some big guns. When we finally got to the back, we saw you’d already been there, and we heard something like an explosion from the basement, so we came running.”
>>
>>32244922

You look at her to continue.

“And,” she says after a slight pause, “there was fire coming out from the stairs, so dad had me stay put while he went in to have a look. And that’s when you came through the floor.”

You furrow your brow. “What does that mean?”

“You bust up through the floorboards. Like, you exploded the floor beneath my feet. Luckily I was armored up, so I hit the ceiling instead of getting blown apart. Then I got my guard up, but then you tossed me through a wall. You were about to come down hard on me, but dad hit you with the crossbow and you took off.”

“Huh.” You try to recall last night as Cassandra taped up your injuries. You had too many to tell if one was caused by a crossbow bolt. “What did I look like?”

“You looked like you,” says Rowan. “Except crazier. Like, you looked feral or something. Anyway, you set everything on fire, so we got everyone we could out before everything burned down. Then we lost track of you,” she finishes. “What’s the first thing you remember after that? And who gave you the clothes you were in when I saw you last night?”

And sometimes I can be fireproof maybe, but my clothes aren’t, so they were pretty much gone.” You hesitate before continuing.

You kind of don’t want to talk about the dead guy who you didn’t know, but you figure Rowan’s been pretty chill about everyone else you killed, so you don’t see a reason to hush it up. “And… there was a guy there. He was dead,” you say. “I don’t know what happened, but, I’m pretty sure I killed him.” The memory makes you doubt yourself. (+2 Stress: 5/100)

Rowan sighs. “Try not to think about it like that,” she says. “We’re pretty much fighting a war against Meckor right now. The only reason you lost control was because a demon tried to kill you, right?”

“Kind of,” you say. There’s more to it than that, but that’s the gist of it.
>>
>>32245455

“Whatever happened was his fault, not yours,” says Rowan. “I don’t know if it will help, but think about it like this. Killing one of Meckor’s lieutenants makes him a lot weaker. The weaker he is, the less people he hurts on any given day. You helped us take him down a peg, yesterday. And it was your first time doing something like that, something was bound to go wrong. It always does. Yeah, bad things happened, but that doesn’t mean the good things don’t count.”

You appreciate the sentiment, even if it seems like a rosier world view than you’re accustomed to. (-5 Stress: 0/100) “I guess you can’t argue with that,” you say.

Rowan got pretty angry when the subject of Verwelkens even got brought up. She might be rather unhappy to learn you had a little bit of Verwelken in you.

While we need to broach the issue, we need to do it gently, and probably with a different family member first.

Can we also ask where they actually come from? What is Stygia, for example? A kingdom in some kind of hell? A sub-dimension? Are these things actually demons or basically just sort of arcane aliens?
>>
>>32245530
Not really. She just took hearing we murdered someone pretty well, and she forgave us for hospitalizing her. If we tell her we're Verwelkan, her response will be either:
"Ok"
or
""Yeah I already knew."

these two kind of work together; the stygian seemed pretty unhappy to be away from home, so what is it that Meckor wants to get him to come here and drag a bunch of lieutenants with him?

"So you and your family have some angel blood, right? Does that mean that when you guys get stressed you end up losing control and baking cookies or running a soup kitchen?

There a variety of Angels just like Demons? Do Angels ever come down to help out?"

Well, I'm in the middle of a post but I need to go. All those unexpected delays are keeping me from wrapping this up neatly.

We'll pick up from here next time.

8:00 AM MST tomorrow, Wednesday.

If you want any other topics broached in the next post, you can suggest them here. I'll reread this thread before I begin nine.

Let's tell Rowan we're shadowy. The longer we wait the worse it will look.
>>
>>32245898
after we ask about why demons come here, what Meckor wants and how long she's been at this, it might be nice to ask a little about demonbane. Different types and all that.

>>32245993
Her dad might deal with it better. He already knows we're a mix, and we could quietly indicate we think there may be more than two types in there.
>>
>>32245993
Let's not.

this

No prob, man. Thanks for running.

I know how it feels when life just won't let you get your QM on.
>>
>>32246033
They'll both handle it well. I doubt Isaac will handle it any better than Rowan, because Rowan really won't mind at all.

>>32246071
Why not?
>>
>>32246102
>Isaac gives you a sideways glance as he starts pulling out a bunch of sparring pads from another crate. “I take it you’re referring to something like the shadowmen urban legend,” he says. “Well you’re right, actually. They’re not something you’d want to run into.” There’s a chilling note to his words, as if he’s had first hand experience as to why you’d be better off not seeing one.

>“Short story is that you don’t see a verwelkan if it doesn’t want you to see it,” says Rowan, flipping her sheathed sword about in some kind of training exercise. “And if you ever do see one, it’s too late.” This statement seems to harden her determination, causing her movements to become more precise and calculated as she completes some kind of form technique.

>You frown slightly. “Uh. Yeah. Sounds like it,” you say.

>“So what kind of stuff can verwelkan hellborn do?” you ask, out of your pure love for knowledge.

>Rowan stops moving for a second at the mention of verwelkan hellborn.

>Isaac shakes his head as he begins donning pads. “I don't really know, to be honest. Verwelkans never comingle with humans,” he says, a little too slowly. “Them and their spawn can’t withstand the light of the sun, so the few that do… happen, tend to die. The ones that survive, you could probably count their number on one hand. I wouldn’t call it living though – their minds are broken.”

>Seeing the way Rowan is clenching her jaw at the description of this particular type of hellborn cues you in that there’s some history there.

Yeah, they don't like Verwelken, and even being two types of demon is apparently very rare without you going somewhat nuts
>>
>>32243947
>You like Batman a lot.
>>
>>32246309
And? They're not going to blame us for having Verwelken parents.
>>
>>32246431
They both responded negatively to the discussion of a -type- of demon (not just a specific one), because it has a bunch of emotional baggage for them. I trust them to get over it, sure, but I don't expect them to react completely rationally when they first hear it. It needs to be handled tactfully, and Isaac seems to be in better control of his emotions since he's, y'know, not a teenager.

People tend to react irrationally towards groups associated even indirectly with people who have killed family members, and Grampa Lemuel seems to have been very beloved of Rowan going by the conversation we overheard between her and Isaac.
>>
>>32246555
...whoops, I meant Lionel there
>>
>>32246555
Rowan is the person we've bonded with most. She'd probably get over it better than anyone else, considering how much time we spent with her.
