>Year 473 of the Raschan Calendar

"Gee, look at that. She's got that a white dress and everything." Carna whispered. Neither of you knew the bride nor groom very well, but weddings were so rare and your hamlet so small that the entire village closed shop and had a party every time people were getting married.
The bride was the baker's daughter, about twelve years older than you. And the groom worked at the stables, near ten years older than her. With the birth rates so low, it was awfully difficult for anyone to wed within reason. Neither of them could be easily described as beautiful people, but somehow together they made a handsome couple.
The wedding was already over, and although she made no effort to catch it, the bouquet ended up in Carna's hand; passed over to her by nosy housewives. The two of you just sat around, while the men teased the groom and the women bothered the bride about having children.

"This is boring isn't it?" Carna whined, waving the flowers around left and right.

"Well, we don't get lots of weddings down here."

"It's all breads and cats though. Weddings should be cakes and horses!" Carna blew a raspberry in disappointment, "And the weddingers are so old! I don't know, a bride should be more... more..." She paused, expecting you to finish her thought.

"More clever?" The bride was well-known as a dunce around the village, you could hear the ladies making jokes about how she hardly had the head to raise children.

"Yeah, smart like! The classic bride is more of a lady, you know? Well read and well-bred!"

"You think so huh..."

"And the groom should be well shaven and well-kept! A big chapel instead of an outsidesy reception with ladies in the fanciest of gowns up and down the aisles." Carna did a twirl. Flower petals fell out from her bouquet. Everyone here certainly looked at their best, but at their best they were still common-folk and the town square was hardly the most romantic of places to get married.

"What kind of wedding do you want then?"

"Maybe I'd come in on a pegasus back, led by all my ladies. The groom would catch me, and we'd be wed between white pillars with tons of people watching!" Carna dropped her bouquet, bouncing excitedly as she talked. "And you could be my best man!"

"But you're a girl."

"It's okay, I can have a best man because I'd be a princess and no one can say no to princesses." As always, Carna's thoughts were all over the place. Her dreams were childishly optimistic, but most of the image was nice to imagine. The expectations of the village were that you two would be wed once you came of age though, and it seemed unlikely the daughter of a barely-working retired mercenary would get much better a reception than the one you were at.

And so the dream ends.

>Year 484 of the Raschan Calendar

Ten years ago you lost her, Carna; more beautiful than any bride. Now ten years later, you will not stop to hold her hand again.

"It's so cold, it's so fucking cold in here!" First thing in the morning, Yu'yen was making complaints about the run-down inn you were staying at over the breakfast table.

"Well we're going to leave Belgrand soon so you can stop groaning about it." Sheryl blew on the warm stew you were having for breakfast, apparently Rein got up early to borrow the kitchen for it. Her tongue pulled back in a jolt when she tried to give it a taste, and she blew on it some more. You only saw their conversation from stairs as you descended, you got up a little later after staying up quite a bit to practice your weaves.
None of the tables in the inn could seat all eight of you and with the exception of Anlak who was still in bed when you arose, the six downstairs waiting were divided in groups of three at two tables. Kita, Sheryl and Yu'yen sat at one. Henry, Leona and Rein at the other. The old inn-keeper gave you a smile as you passed by her to take a seat...

You take a seat between Sheryl and Yu'yen.

"About time you woke up friend! What in the world were you doing up all night?"

"Studying a weave." You tell him, "Want to see?"

Yu'yen took a short pause to think it over before shaking his head, "No thanks, the last one nearly singed my brows off."

"You can show me later." Sheryl said between attempts at the hot soup. You started on your breakfast, having a much easier time with it than her.
You turned to the stairway briefly, hearing heavy steps. Anlak plodded down, not dealing with the mornings any better here than back at The Archives. When he sat at the other table, Henry's awkward attempts to make conversation came to a sudden stop. Rein began steering the talk elsewhere, but that wasn't any of your business.

"Got your things well and packed friend? I can't wait to get out of this place. The women are fierce and the air is choking." Yu'yen put a hand over his throat, dramatically acting out death by suffocation.

"Women everywhere are terrible." Kita said, pushing a half-eaten meal away from him, "And you'll have to get used to places much worse than this when you're a Seeker."

"You're not going to eat more of that?" You ask.

"I can barely eat anything without spitting it up with my contract and I've had a decent taste anyways."

Reaching a hand over the table, Yu'yen grabbed Kita's bowl, "That's a shame, eating is great."

"At least I'm not Masoch, I hear he can't even taste anymore." Breakfast continues...

You pack into the caravan quickly after breakfast, and get ready to set off again.

"Urrrgh, this inn doesn't even have a bath. I don't want to smell all the way back to Deneb." Rein groaned, clutching her body closely against the cold.

"I doubt any of us can smell anything out here in this cold." Yu'yen hopped onto the back of the caravan first, eager to escape Belgrand.

"But I feel so... yucky." With Rein at the lead, the rest climbed onto the back of the cart quickly. You entered last, momentarily distracted by the sound of flapping wings overhead. A small group of sky knights passed over you too far above for you to distinguish any details. If they were looking for you and your companions, it was certainly for the best to leave the city quickly...

It doesn't look as though anyone slept very well last night. As you leave the road out of town, Henry just starts to drift off right away and there's a drowsy air among everybody else. It wouldn't be a terrible idea to do a little bit more reading, though you would certainly have to be careful not to start a fire inside your wooden vehicle. There were probably a few conversations you could drag out if you tried. Leona and Yu'yen were discussing something quietly, you note that despite being fairly good friends you rarely see the two interact one on one. Anlak and Sheryl happened to take seats across from each other but they didn't make any talk. Rein sat alone near the front of the caravan.

You shuffle over beside Sheryl, her arms are clutched around her knees. She hasn't made any complaints about it, but you can watch her breath come off of her lips.

You flick your fingers, and pull out a small flame beside her. Just a little larger than the ember, you take care not to burn anything.

"Thanks." She whispers to you, "That's a useful weave... try not to set us all on fire though."

"I'll try. Anyways, I was going to study a new weave since we have the time, want to learn with me?" You remove your little book with your free hand and hold it out to her underneath your other arm. She reaches out to grab it, the very tips of her cold fingers touch yours as she takes it.

"Where should I open to?" Sheryl asks you as she flips to the table of contents. Her ears wiggle slightly. The two of you browse over some choices...

>Blade, make a small cut at a distance with air. Not very deadly.

Say someone tied up. Is it accurate enough to cut a rope without cutting the person?

>>32271611
Maybe our next trip will be to head south to the desert. But, they'll be plenty of time to learn the cold spell later even if we do go there.
>>
The blade motion is a simple one, but you decide it best to start with your dominant hand. You open your palm and your flame vanishes, you close it up again to start. Your index and middle fingers stretch forward, held still and parallel to the back of your your hand. You bring them apart to a 'V', then close them again and sweep your hand across, aimed at the ground... nothing.

Beside you Sheryl does the same. The two of you spend some time practising wordlessly as the long ride goes on...

Woosh. A blast of wind escapes your finger tips many tries in. It sharpens going forward, you can watch the air fold around it before it slides into the wooden floor of the caravan. The cut doesn't penetrate through the bottom, but it's fairly deep.

"You did it?" Sheryl leans forward and to the side to get a better look at the mark forward and between your feet, "Hm... I imagine you could slice rope with that."

"Are you having any luck?" You ask her, her ears drop and she sighs.

"Not really..." She straightens up again against her seat, you watch her try the motions, but her small hands shiver and her fingers lack their usual deftness. Her eyes sharpen up, she seems to be a bit bothered at you beating her.

You practice a few more times with mixed success, trying to build consistency in your motion...

>CONT
>>
As your weave gets better, Sheryl's agitation grows. You've come to find that the elf girl has some pride in her work, and doesn't appreciate being beaten.

"Do you need any help?"

"I'm fine, just a few more tries..." She's getting faster but not any more accurate, her hand whipping back and forth as she tries to practise the spell, "Agh, this stupid cold..."

Anlak pops an eye open and watches the two of you for a few seconds before stepping up and making way further forward in the caravan past Yu'yen and Leona who send a few looks over in your direction. Neither of them say anything.

She won't be making any progress the way she's working. Maybe you should...

>Offer to help before she gets too frustrated.

You grab Sheryl's right with both of your hands, and she let's out a little noise. Her hands are shaky, but hopefully that has more to do with the cold.

"What're you doing?" She whispers.

"I'm showing you the weave." You tell her, steadying her hand with one of yours while the other guides her fingers. You focus more on warming up her palms than actually showing her the spell.

"H-hey, everyone else is still here."

"I'm just helping you learn, are you embarrassed?"

"Of course not." Her mouth folds inward and her ears hang low, her cheeks turn red but she keeps her eyes focused on the task in hands, "Just hurry up already... do you need to rub my hands like that?"

"It's for good luck." You joke as you warm her up. Her shaking is calming as you settle warmth into her palms. When she grows more comfortable, her ears start to twitch upwards. When she seems ready, you guide her hands in a full motion of the spell once before letting go, "Try it now."

It's a small moment before your words settle in on her mind. She takes a breath and weaves through the motion once more...
Woosh, a cut across the wooden floor. Her weave is successful.

"There!" She breaths out relieved, "Finally..."

You commend her for your efforts. She seems to shrink a little when you praise her, but as always she gathers herself together quickly to continue practice. You follow her lead...

A good few hours have passed by already. The weather outside seems calmer now than when you left and calmer today than yesterday. You're still a good ways away from the Raschan Kingdoms but peeking out the front of the caravan, you can see the shape of mountains not dusted off with snow.

"We're not making any stops on the way, so just take it easy." Kita yells back to the rest of you, taking a road that skips around a town...

It's a bit much to learn another spell right now. And you kill some time making idle conversation and discussing various things. Rein is a lot more distant than usual, only Leona and much more rarely Anlak approach her. Between a conversation with Yu'yen; you hear a loud noise, the blowing of a horn...

Piercing through the walls of your ride, a javelin places itself just inches beside Henry's head. The noise shocks him into a wake, and he stumbles forward onto the ground. You can hear the sound of wings flapping about outside.

"What in the world." Yu'yen grumbles, breaking away from you to peek out the back of the caravan that continues rolling along. You follow behind him where you see them...

"Halt. I am Unicorn Commander Laness of Belgrand. Stop your horses and surrender to the Sky Knights at once!" A dozen pegasi-back knights make circles around you, commanded by an helmetless ornate-armoured woman with loose wavy carrot hair.

Could easily have been the woman we knocked out while grabbing Pegasi for our escape if she remembered after coming to.

She probably has a better reason to spill the beans, at least.
>>
"Kita, stop!" You yell behind you. You can't win a fight while they're in the air, and although escape is certainly possible; you don't feel confident enough to play your odds out here.

The caravan pulls to a stop, and gracefully the pegasi come to a landing one by one surrounding your group, forming a perfect circle with their hooves on the snow. The last one to land is Laness, who steps off of her Unicorn to approach you. Her skin shows wear and strands of grey decorate her hair, but there's a ferocity in her eye and her frame is large and imposing.

"We have reason to believe that this caravan is transporting Belgran treasures. Everyone is to exit it and stand with their hands up before me." She hefts a lance over her shoulder and points it at you, the strength she holds must be something to hold the weapon...

When you're all lined up, Laness cycles through several mixed expressions as she scans over your group. Leona glances upward at the sky, smiling awkwardly. Rein hangs her head low, dejected.

"Ah, I was wondering where under The Shepherd's eye you two escaped off too." Laness stands in front of the two sisters, "Leona, Rein; it's about time to come home isn't it?"

"Ahaha..." Leona makes a strained laugh, "Hey mom."

"We can't go anywhere without someone's parents hunting us down huh." Yu'yen sighs.

"Stop, that's cold and it huuuurts." Leona waves her arms around over her head while getting scolded.

"You should've stopped her Rein, it's your duty to keep your sister from making mistakes like this."

"My apologies mother." Rein meekly responds.

"Now, explain properly why you left..."

"I left Belgrand because every time I'm outside here you mobilize your entire squadron to catch me again!" Leona groans, holding her hands out to her side, "I keep telling you that I don't want to marry any stupid princes or follow any military tradition, mom! Now, stop embarrassing me in front of my friends and let me go!"

Laness lets go of Leona's ear and takes a step back, shaking her head; "Unfortunately I can't do that. Your friends here might be escaping with something of value to us... and more than that, I certainly can't have you leaving our regions again Leona."

"Commander, I cannot find the lock box within the caravan!" A sky-knight peeks her head out from your wagon. You catch Kita smirking slyly from the corner of your eye.

"Well... I suppose you lot at free to go then." Laness sighs, "But Leona, Rein, the two of you are returning with me."

Leona looks over to you, her eyes plea for help.

Either of these could do it, though I'm not sure how the law would handle the former given the matriarchal nature of Belgran society as opposed to our neck of the woods. They might not even be willing to acknowledge it even if it were true, especially given the prior betrothal.

Laness reaches her arm out to grab Leona's, you lunge and step between them.

"No, they aren't." You say firmly and willfully to Laness, looking her straight in the eyes. She takes a pause, surprised at your action. Four members of her cavalry draw crossbows, aiming them on you.

"...and who are you to say that?" Laness raises her arm, the crossbows lower.

"Who are you to be telling them what to do? They should make their own decisions."

"They are my daughters, and Leona is to be wed to an imperial prince so that our household can cement itself beyond mere knighthood!"

"Well Leona may be your daughter..." You start, gathering all your breath together, "BUT WE ARE ALREADY MARRIED!"

The air freezes. You can hear snow crumble underneath dropped weapons. Laness' wrinkled face curls into an odd shape. You can hear Yu'yen holding back his laughter.

Leona hugs around your arm, "Y-yeah! That is the truth! We already made our vows under The Shepherd's blessing. I am already expecting his child!"

Laness smashes her iron palm against her forehead, you can see a light trickle of blood from where the metal cuts just over her forehead. She breaths in and out for several seconds, her armour clatters while her body shakes, "...Rein, come over here would you?"

I would think that our reaction here would be pretty visceral, this being the second time one of our (few) friends is being taken from us. On the one hand I can see us asking her if she really wants to stay or not, but I also feel like we should be trying to stop them from leaving with her. Maybe rush towards Rein and grab her hand, look her in the eyes, and ask her if she really wants to leave. "Leona needs you, we all need you..." something like that but not so sappy

Third time, since this is probably closer to the situation with Gos than with Carna.

If this is something she's okay with, we're still going to be upset (not only because she's leaving, but also a little bit that she didn't feel comfortable with telling us that she was starting to question her desire to stay with the Seekers), but it's not going to be a matter of life and death.

If she still feels like she's going unwillingly, then it's probably worth a more visceral reaction.

"Do you really want to leave us Rein?" You catch her gaze as she's dragged away. She meets your eyes, her mouth opens but she doesn't say anything. She closes it again, biting her lips.

"You don't really want to go do you? Rein, tell us you don't!"

"Stop listening to them dear, your sister has gone from eccentric to mad and those friends of yours don't know what's best for you. You have plenty of friends back in the capital and I am sure you will get along very nicely with the royal princesses." Luness climbs onto her pegasus first, Rein stops and stares at the rest of you.

"I don't know... I don't want to go home but, I don't think I can keep up with you. I just lost myself when we found those slaves and I'm always doing poorly on the books... in the field." Rein climbs onto the back of the horse, other than it's wings a long horn sticks out of its forehead, marking it uniquely against the other white steeds.

"It's fine, we can work together like always Rein. Come back with us, alright?" Leona lets go of you, she presses forward against the snow.

"We're leaving." Luness kicks the pegasus into a start, and it's wings lift off. Rein nearly slips before grabbing a hold of her mother's waist.

The snow is thick and her thoughts are vague, but you have seconds plenty to act.

Leona is stunned as the pegasus takes off, you dash past her, rushing quickly through the snow. As it lifts itself into the air, you kick off after it, just barely your hands wrap around it's leg.

"What're you doing!?" Rein screams at you as you ascend with her. You don't answer her, doing your best to avoid the kicking of the beast while pulling yourself up.

"What in the... are you so unsatisfied with Leona that you need to take my other daughter as well!?" Luness glances back to you, she reaches for the short blade attached to her belt.

"Stop mother! If you do anything to him I will throw myself off from here!" Rein yells to Luness, twisting her body around to extend her hand out to you. You grab a hold of each other, and she pulls you up just behind her.
The shape of your friends is vanishing behind you, and the back of the pegasus is too tight for three bodies to reasonably fit. It continues to fly forward despite this, the other sky knights pull in near by, drawing arms on you.

Rein clings onto you closely, her head rests against your chest and you move up against her trying not to fall off the hind of the pegasus. Crossbows, javelins and blades all ready on you...

"Stop! You'll hit my daughter!" Luness yells out, "Hold your damn weapons, the fellow will ride with me until we reach the fucking fortress."

Again, you manage to escape from a near execution.

"What are you doing, what are you doing." Rein repeats over and over again to you. Her mother doesn't look back, but you can tell from the few snarls that pass over the roar of the wind that she isn't very happy.

"I wanted to know if you really wanted to go." You whisper to her.

"So you chased after a flying horse?"

"It was the fastest thing I could think of." You only see the top of her head with how closely her body rests against yours. Her short hair blows against the wind, tickling on your chin.

"Here you are, 'married' to Leona and I'm riding with you on a white-winged steed..." Her grasp on your clothes grows tighter.

"I'm not much of a prince or a knight though." If you were, maybe Carna would still be with you.

"You're plenty of both right now... can I tell you something?" She lifts her head up, her eyes are wet and red creeps from both cheeks and across her nose, "I don't want to leave you... and Leona, and the others."

You steel your resolve. It's a long fall beneath you, and although there's snow plenty the fall certainly won't be an easy one. You want to take her away, but it's a toss up whether it'd be easier from where ever they're taking you or from where ever you might land. Even if you could commandeer the pegasus, you can't very well knock Rein's mother off of it.

SHIT tier motive would not want as family. It seems like anyone will do as long as someone in her family marries the prince, Leona was the first choice but Rein "will do". Presumably this is for more power; but Laness is already Top Captain of the Ponies so I don't see why she can't earn it properly.

Probable reason is you have to be born as nobility to be recognized and it can't be earned which is a shit politics; thus we should get her to do a coup and everyone gets what they want.

My only issue with jumping is that escaping manually isn't going to be enough to get their mother to leave them alone.

I mean, maybe being confronted with the fact that her daughter is willing to jump from pegasus-back to try and get away from the obligation being forced upon her is going to be enough, but I'm not sure it's going to be that easy.

>>
"That's all I needed to hear." You smile to Rein and speak in whispered breaths, "Do you trust me?" Rein only nods in response, that's good enough for you.

You hold onto her tightly and jerk to the side, off of the pegasus. Luness pulls her herself to a stop quickly, but a weave from your fingertips clips into the pegasus wings. The mount doesn't plummet, but it kicks about in the sky keeping the commander distracted.

"Are you crazy!?" Rein screams point-blank as you drop, hugging you as tightly as she can as you speed through the air. Her legs wrap around yours, you swear you can hear her heartbeats through the thick layers of winter clothes.

"I thought you trusted me!" You take your arms off of her once she's wrapped around you, watching two of the more alert sky knights speeding down, their horses kicking vertically against the air as they drop. You'll need to do something about them before you do something about the fall. Wielding blades, they rush towards you.

Rein's an accomplished rider and we'll likely need a mount to outpace pursuers one way or another, but just parrying alone isn't going to be enough to distract trained soldiers well enough to allow us to hijack their mount.

Holding on to Rein while trying to parry two oncoming assailants seems way harder than blinding them both and then trying to board one.

That, and if one knight goes overboard, the other will likely go after them to keep them from falling before pursuing us. Maybe a little heartless, but probably quite effective.

If you stop them you'll have to deal with the fall, but letting them in close you might be able to catch a ride.

The first one comes in, you draw your short sword quickly and deflect her blows. You can tell she's skilled and strong with the way she wields her weapon, but you take advantage of her fear of hitting Rein to predict the likeliest routes of her swings. She swings at your right shoulder and you manage to shove it aside, then again at your left where you deflect the swipe. Flying little over head, she thrusts at your skull but a vertical thrust upward catches her blade right in the middle and sends it bouncing out of her hand, you slap it away into the snow below you.

The second sky knight comes at you from behind when she sees her friend overwhelmed, you twist your body against your and Rein's weights and narrowly stop her sword from sliding into your face, keeping your flat at an angle where the thrust slides off. The cold metal runs against your cheek, and you manage to avoid getting gored by turning your head. While the knight's arm is out, you grab it with your free hand, you sneak your blade around and bash the blunt side against the gauntlet of her wrist, forcing her to drop her sword.

You sheath your blade and try to climb up her arm as the pegasus begins to buckle under the weight of supporting the knight with you and Rein attached. The other rider pulls out a crossbow, aiming at you.

>CONT
>>
You begin to pull yourself up against the pegasi snapping at your arm. A bolt whizzes by your shoulder, only missing due to the swaying of your body in the air. You'll have to act fast before the others catch up.

"Let me help." Rein yells, she begins to climb up your frame, grabbing a hold of your your neck and your shoulders as she awkwardly ascends. She takes a short pause when her face is on level with you, her nose lightly touches yours; you feel the heat on her face. Her chest snuffs your breath for a moment before she leaps off of you and onto the pegasus' side, grabbing a hold of two of its legs before acrobatically swinging herself onto its back. The sky knight is caught in surprise when Rein slams her off her steed, you let go of the knight as she falls to catch Rein's outstretched hand, she pulls you up behind her.

"You can hold on as tightly as you want this time." She pulls on the reins of the horse and turns it around, you rub your strained arm and watch the first sky knight chase after her falling comrade.

Four more of them are coming after you, Rein makes your steed dash through the air, heading for the trees while you're pursued.

"I'm going to need all my attention to ride through the forest, you handle them alright?"

The four knights chase you into the forest, dodging past trunks and slamming away branches as they approach. If Yu'yen were here, he'd certainly have something to say about bears.

With your back against Rein's, you weave your fingers on both hands, weaving blades through the air. Your main hand hasn't perfected this spell yet and you make plenty of mistakes in your off-hand, but you manage to pick up a steady pace.

A cut against some twigs manages to slow down the front most of the fliers but she picks up quickly. You find yourself narrowly avoiding a branch from behind you as Rein ducks, and you slice into the upper-corner of where it connects to the tree. The branch bends under its own weight without full support, the first sky knight slamming into it as she approaches. She topples into the snow beneath her, and her pegasus is grounded shortly after.

From the side, you spot one of the knights running up against other trees. You sling spells at her, but the difficult angles of the trees keeps you from catching any branches. She fires a bolt at you and it catches up against your left shoulder, in response you weave with your right and manage to slash into her pegasus' eye. You offer a silent apology to the horse as it kicks out of control, vanishing behind you in the forest.

The third and fourth sky knights are both coming at you from behind.

>CONT
>>
They've managed to come uncomfortably close while you were fighting a fire fight with the second knight. They thrust their spears at you, not coming close enough to hit but certainly coming closer. The weight of two people seems to holding back your speed, but there's nothing you can do about that.

You twist your body and watch the branches high above you, swiping vertically where they seem thinner. Wood falls down, but Rein manages to keep past it. More importantly than that, the snow they were holding up topples into the face of one of the knights and she directs herself into a tree. You turn your attention back to the last one remaining; but too slow, she manages to gauge into your side with the tip of her spear, tearing away layers of clothes and skin before pulling back.

You pull your fingers apart, back together, and across, throwing blades out on both hands simultaneously, slicing into two branches. The knight manages to parry the first one without any trouble, but the second hits her just under the helmet and she topples over backwards.

"Up ahead!" Rein yells, turning your attention around. Luness sits with her arms crossed on the back of her pegasus, just where the forest opens up into more snowy fields.

"This ends here Rein!" The commander growls, tossing her wavy hair out behind her.

"I'd say so." Rein yells, taking a hand away from steering and raising it, "I learned this one in school!"

"What?" Luness stops confused. Rein weaves her fingers and with a snap, flashes light outward from the dim forest, you catch Luness flinching while she draws her blade as the two of you soar towards her.

You draw your sword and swipe at the straps of her saddle, hoping to make her fall off. Even blinded though, her title of Unicorn Commander is not for show, she manages to parry your sword before flicking it up from your hand. You barely catch it behind you in time to stop her from slicing your neck out when she continues her swing. Both pegasi stop, Luness' in order to stop you and Rein's so that you can maintain your footing.

"Rein is coming back home, you will not take my daughters away from me!" Luness snarls at you fiercely, her eyes still closed and wincing.

"Her home isn't here." You weave your fingers out, intent on bringing forth a flame. With your hand on your sword though, you can't complete the spell...
Tender fingers touch the back of your hand, and a matching pair runs just above your palm.

"It worked like this right?" Rein peeks up at you, "You were working on it all last night, didn't even notice me when I brought you dinner."

"You can't help me weave a spell!"

"Sure I can, plenty of weavers make huge spells together."

You put your trust in Rein as you pull your spell to completion and swing your off-hand forward, the arm holding your mundane sword ready to shatter against Luness' strength.
From the top of your weaved hand, flame erupts. Not quite a meter long, but long enough for you to do your job. You slash it across the saddle straps keeping Luness held, and the leather burns away. She falters for a moment, just long enough for you to shove back with your blade as Rein pulls forward.

"GET BACK HERE REIN!" Luness cries out as she falls.

"Sorry mother, I'll write!" The two of you ride away together...

You keep flying as far as you can, until there're less than no signs that your pursuers are coming. You're not entirely sure where you've landed, but it's a fare deal warmer than the peaks of Irondale and for that you're okay with it.

The snow has started to fall around you, and under the afternoon sky a blue hue creeps across the white snow. With the pegasus already pushing itself to fly, Rein lands it out near some new snow-covered woodlands and ties it up to a tree.

"I recognize this area, there's no village here but a traveller's inn is nearby." Rein tells you, helping you off the pegasus. A shoulder and a side of you are gauged, your bones ache all over, "We should rest, you're injured..."

Honestly, it's probably easier to stay put somewhere they might think to find us rather than wandering off hoping we can run into them in the middle of the night.

Or if they aren't searching, we'll be well-rested so we can try and catch up and rendezvous with them in the morning.

I was half hoping we'd both be able to get it through her mom's thick skull that even if she wants to believe it's well-intentioned, forcing her daughters to live their lives the way she chooses isn't any better than slavery, but it's probably just as well that she realizes it on her own over time.

Or just stomps around angrily for ages. That'd be fine too.

"Let's rest then." You come off the horse and slump onto Rein, but she manages to catch you without stumbling.

"We should leave the pegasus here, it'll be difficult to sneak out by air tomorrow if they look for us. We'll cut it loose when we come back, it might fly back to them if we free it now." She supports you as she leads you through the woods...

"Thanks for coming after me." Rein whispers to you as you plod through the snow.

"Anyone would have, I just reacted first."

"It was pretty stupid grabbing onto the legs of a pegasus, they can stomp bone to dust you know."

"I'll remember that." The two of you make small chat as you walk, she keeps insisting that the inn is near but a map of the local area would've made you much more comfortable than Rein's sense of direction.

"We're almost there, promise." Rein says. You wince when a branch brushes past your wounded side, the sky knights from earlier must still be reeling from their injuries as well...

"You know, I really wasn't sure whether I wanted to go until you came for me." She tells you, an hour later in the woods, "We're twins, but Leona's better in just about every way... they raised her for greatness, they raised me to help her be great. I thought I might do my job best by staying behind."

You don't have much to say about that, just kindnesses that wouldn't do anything for her.

"It's not very nice of me to say so, but when you showed up, I thought, 'He picked me over her'. That really made me happy."

"We're here."

You don't get a chance to respond, as the night starts to set in you arrive at the traveller's inn. The place is larger and looks more well-built and well-kept than the one you stayed at last night, despite of or because of being placed in such an out of the way spot. The road out in front of it is half-shoveled, the lights at the front shine brightly but few shadows move inside.

"I guess we're lucky that it's not busy." Rein leads you inside...

"Weeeeeelcome!" The inn-keeper is a healthy looking young man, "Ooooh, those are some bad wounds you've got there. Let me grab some bandages and warm water for you. I will add it to your room bill!"

"Two please." You tell the inn-keeper.

"One please. And prepare a bath for me." Rein says, "We should be close together if something happens, and I need to clean out those injuries. Don't worry, I'll tell your wife you didn't cheat on her."

Carna or Leona aside, you have your reservations about this idea. She makes some fair points but it'd hardly be appropriate.

You rest up against an unfamiliar bed, your shoulder and and hips bandaged around over a bare chest. You ended up only getting one room, but thankfully it did come with two beds.

"You still up?" Rein steps in through the door, her hair still dripping water. Thick walls and a large fire in the main hall keeps the place fairly warm, and neither of you have to keep wearing your jackets. Rein's outfit doesn't show much skin but it clings tightly against her healthy portions.
She takes a seat on the bed across from yours, "Did I do a decent job on the bandages?"

"Better than anything I could do." They fit around tightly but neatly cut to remain light.

She lays down on her bed sideways, facing you from across the room as she pulls her blankets over her, "Heheh. Now I'm spending a night in a room with my sister's husband."

"We're not married."

"I don't know about that." You give the safest answer you can.

"...yeah, me neither." Her voice is sweet, and a matching scent fills in the air as the candle smoke gives way. Soapy, feminine. Your chest hurts.

"We'll look for the others in the morning." You turn over away from Rein, and try to draw yourself to sleep...

"Hey, are you still awake?" She calls out quietly, a while into the night. You haven't been able to quite drift off yet.
You don't answer her, you don't have the choice. You do your best to feign sleep, it's not hard with how little your body wants to move.

"...I wouldn't mind staying here for a few days, until the searches die out. Until your wounds heal." She whispers before taking a pause, "Sorry, what I really meant to say was... it'd be nice if it were just the two of us for awhile wouldn't it?"

You ignore her.

"Heheheh... guess I can't say that can I." You can hear her sheets shuffling, "That was embarrassing... glad you're sleeping."

Your chest hurts.

"We'll just have breakfast together and I'll wipe the sweat off when I change the bandages..." She whispers aloud her girlish romances in the dead of night, until her energy drifts away...

Your chest hurts. This isn't where you're suppose to be, you should be back in The Archives by now, studying, preparing, searching...

Until you find Carna again.

"Don't worry about it, okay?" Her voice drifts through your head, trying to drown out your pained heart beats. You count your memories like a man counts sheep, until you fall into sleep...

And so, life goes on.

I really thought this would be a Leona session, I had an image of busting down a wedding in my head and riding off with a bride and everything.

So I've been thinking of moving to a promptless format, since I've been finding that a lot more enjoyable in experimenting. There were a couple unprompted points here and I think the weaknesses are a more difficult vote count on my end and potentially more difficult discussion on the player end. Combat portions I have no idea how to handle without prompts though so if it happens it may be a gradual transition, any suggestions? By the way, I fucking love aerial fights.

I never intended for Librarian Quest to be a long running 50+ quest since I have a personal distate for long quests, and I'm running without notes other than the start of the quest and a mid-way point we should be reaching fairly soon so if you guys want things to happen start pushing for them soon.

Aiming to run again next Wednesday. Thanks for playing.

If the demon that killed her jumped inside him... Then wouldn't the MC have the memories of that demon killing her and the MC's family. Just trapped deep in his subconscious.

Something to think about.

You realize there are people with opposing views on what should happen. What happens in 95% of quests is; we all start pushing in different directions and go nowhere.

For example: I'd like to continue down the path we started here. But others probably won't.

Weaves, ALL the weaves. Gotta push to find out about joint weaves went on about.
Union Raid baby!

The 95% figure is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but the point is a good one. Hoping for absolute consensus will never end well, but you've been pretty reasonable at writing compromise into votes so far, so that's probably not going to be that much of an issue.

Encouraging this too heavily runs the risk of going the other way, though. Getting constant responses of "OH WHY NOT JUST DO ALL OF THEM?" every time a couple disparate ideas come up is miserable.

Promptless generally has slightly lower contribution on the whole, and will often mean things take longer to come to a reasonable consensus. (Partly because it takes time to come up with ideas for what to do, and partly to let people work through the inherent vote-count bias in favor of ideas posted earlier on.)

Particularly when it's the really open-ended sort that want us to pick secondary characters to go out of the way to interact with and in what context. It'll often get to the point where people have a favorite character and will tunnel-vision on getting as much screen-time with them as possible.

This isn't terribly different from what people actually do in real life (people will be more likely to seek out those they like spending time with, after all), but can end up feeling a bit unsatisfying from a storytelling standpoint.

This is also going to happen a lot. I feel like since you decided to allow for independent study I think that almost every "you've got some free time; what do you want to do with it?" vote has gone to "Learn more weaves."

We love picking up new shinies. We love making our old shinies more effective or interesting. If we are given free rein, we run the risk of ignoring our supplementary cast entirely in favor of unilateral magical introspection.

You forgot to archive it.

I'll do it if no one else does, but I can't really think of a description.

Yeah, that's why I was hoping he's still be on. He usually has a distinct way of writing the archive description.
