Big Changes Quest Thread 12

Rules, Character Sheet, & extras http://pastebin.com/u/QuestMasterGyoji

People surround you and busily flit to and and fro through the columns and rows of small tech firm exhibit and recruitment tables in the second floor ballroom of a fairly nice hotel in Tokyo. Pleasant conversation and professional introductions swarm the air alongside the fresh ozone from the small electrical discharge from one of the exhibit tables nearby. Surrounded in this dense hall by a well of hopeful and desperate humanity, you feel entirely alone. They don’t know what’s coming.

Your name is Tsubasa Campbell, and over a month ago you obtained abilities beyond conventional science from a freak accident. People have been watching you, trying to kill you, or marvel at the mundane changes you have willed to and worked for with your body. You have tested your powers, been terrified, almost lost yourself to their rush, caught a falling airplane, and discovered you can remove super power granting nanites from people and absorb their function.

Moments ago you used your phenomenal abilities to observe a presence in the pacific ocean. You found a gargantuan beast with hard shell, great claws, and the surface crackle of electromagnetic energy tearing apart and eating portions of a nearly 100,000 ton shipping freighter. The surviving crew arrayed around the horrific scene in life boats, scattering away from the danger. As you observed the beast, it’s gorging feast of now sinking metal and as it became aware of your ability to observe it.
>>
>>32282387

Gulping air and gaining buoyancy despite it’s armored hide, the beast threw itself into the water again and set course for you. Along a path that, when it makes landfall in about an hour, will bring it across Chiba Prefecture, Tokyo Bay, and finally to the city itself. It hungers. It hungers for the miraculous things inside of you that have altered your destiny and flesh. Instinctively you recoiled from it’s awareness, somehow learning how to hide yourself from it in a moment of fear.

Regardless of this precaution, you feel it’s steady approach. Even if it no longer has eyes upon you, it remains on course to where it last felt you. To find your scent and continue it’s hunt. A hunt that will no doubt leave a large portion of this city in ruins.

The red and black within you roils in hunger. You hunger. For the lesser machine colonies inside of the beast that have made it something closer to yourself.

None of those around you realize what is coming. A city in peace may soon be ruin.

>Hide. Get away from here and hide where you don’t think it will find you.
>Leave the city, let it become aware of you again when you are away from a populated area and then hide far away.

So, for the people voting to fight the crab when it makes landfall: Where the fuck do you think it's going to make landfall?
There is NO part of Chiba's coastline that's not developed!
If it makes landfall it's going to be destroying a busy shipping area and docks if it's coming in through the bay, or it's going to hit residential neighborhoods if it's coming in from the open ocean.

Is that what you really want?

I need a major loss of life and property so future
losses of life and property (from this type of shit) can be prevented/reduced much more easily and successfully.
>>
>>32282824
>can be prevented/reduced much more easily and successfully.
By who? No one except us and the two factions who discovered the nanomachine technology can even effectively fight against threats like this, and we're the only one who can actually absorb the machine colonies without surgery.

As for awareness of the two organizations, how is the appearance of a giant crab and its destruction of a sea-side town going to do it?

You've got no plan, and all it's going to do is make Tsubasa's life more awkward and cause unnecessary loss of life.
>>
>>32282876
1: By the government. We still need to persuade it to raid the other two factions and take their stuff though.

2: "the appearance of a giant crab and its destruction of a sea-side town" will allow us to "direct" the public into doing actions beneficial to us/the mc's "faction".
>>
>>32282933

>>
>>32282933
We have no contacts in or ties to, the national government. Hell, we don't even have anything to do with the local town council.
Nor do we have any friends in the media or social media activists that could help us to direct the public into doing anything. Tsubasa doesn't even frequent 2ch.

Do you have any sort of plan beyond vague goals you want fulfilled?
>>
>>32282950
>we have no faction
The mc's "faction" (I used "faction", not faction) is my attempt at describing the mc and characters in the previous threads that support her.

>we have no ties to the government
We don't need any. We just have to improvise.

>are you sure you're in the right quest?
Yes.

I'm doing this because I believe that it is unsustainable to keep fighting like an animu character. My "plan" isn't perfect though.
>>
>>32283027
You've got no plan.
Improvise? Improvise with what? How do you suggest we direct the national government's investigation without them detaining us, or once we're identified, detaining our friends?

And how do you suggest that we tie the giant crab to the two groups that have access to the nanomachine technology, since we've got no evidence that this was created by or released by either group?
>>
>>32283097
1.
>"detaining us"
When the mc is detained, directing them will be much easier.

2.
Tell me about your plan(s). How are you going to make the mc "keep up" with the other factions when they progress (think of it in 4X/tabletop character terms) at a much faster rate, not to mention their current resources/abilities.

How will you deal with it when two attacks happen at the same time, at two different locations?
>>
>>32283176
>When the mc is detained, directing them will be much easier.
Because they're going to listen to us, a freak they have in a cell

>How will you deal with it when two attacks happen at the same time, at two different locations?
Ignore one.
>>
You can’t run. You won’t. This creature now undulating beneath it’s segmented armor is coming and you will meet it. You consider for a moment flying to it now and taking this war into the depths of the sea...but a niggling fear comes to you. A sinking of your confidence in your ability to fight it in the sea, the memory of fear in the deep. You’ll meet it on the shore, you’ll meet it at the water’s edge and give it now chance to move forward.

With a deep breath, you back out of the crowded ballroom and back into the stairwell, breaking into a run until you get to the roof. Exerting the faintest bit of electromagnetic force, you short out the security camera for the rooftop garden and stow your folder, phone, wallet, and clothes within a shrubbery. Letting the red and black to the surface, you let it envelop you in the warm and familiar second skin. Elation.

Your muscles tense, you feel the viscous material in a new light as it is you and your power. Taking off like a shot into the sky, you reach the clouds in seconds and pitch yourself east. You’ll land along the Kujuukuri Toll Rd near the Furutokoro beach. There’s a large river emptying into the sea from inland there, it’ll be more than enough space and sure footing to face the beast as it crawls from the water.

In mere moments you arrive. You wait far above in the sky. Despite the now warming weather, the beach is relatively empty on either side of the river mouth. Good. Seeing the road far beneath you grants purchase to a pang of nostalgia; the errant memory of yourself, Kaito, Junpei, and a few others on roaring bikes along the coast. Dark skies, leather jackets braced against the cold, and a hastily built bonfire on the beach in the dark, less than a mile from where you now wait.
>>
>>32283209
>Because they're going to listen to us, a freak they have in a cell
When they have no leads, no explanations whatsoever?

>Ignore one
How can you say this when you are protesting my plan to allow the crab to heavily damage Chiba?

And finally, you didn't answer my question about making the mc "keep up" with the other factions .
>>
>>32283270

Feeling the weight of it’s presence, you still have much time before it arrives. It passed by a few other ships in the shipping lanes. It ignores them. It isn’t ignored for long. Soon, Tsunami warning sirens sound. Local police begin evacuating the area. People know something is coming, whether or not they know the truth is another matter.

Ships to be ignored stop falling in it’s path. You feel it absorb a sudden influx of electromagnetic energy, and then the heat and explosions around it as the guidance system of long range missiles fail and fall off target and into the water.

Time passes. It will be here soon. You allow it to know where you are, to draw it to this point. The red and black tightens against you and a chill reaches your spine. Danger. Anticipation. Hunger.

Lowering yourself to shallows where the water passes over the beach and into the sea, you take a deep breath to calm yourself. You have time to prepare yourself, you see the undulating armored curve on the horizon quite clearly given the range of your vision. White fur surrounds it’s toothed snout beneath the biological plating across it’s back. You can feel the rapidly changing charge of electricity in the water even this far out.

Helicopters are in the sky, keeping their distance from the beast but keeping relative pace.

You have time to prepare yourself, to receive this beast.

>Get big and wait to receive it in melee. How big do you want to try to grow?
>Prepare and attempt a long range attack using your ability to manipulate electricity and gravity?

You fucking idiot, Mori Micro has absolutely no reason to be starting kaiju attacks, and in fact that would be counter to their current goals of keeping the technology secret.
As for the faction that wants to turn us into a god, sending two monsters to different locations doesn't make sense when they want us to absorb the nanomachines in order to become closer to becoming their god.

And the two factions are not progressing at a much faster rate; did you miss the part where they're still working on nanotech while we're actually working at the femtotech level?

>>32283283
And how are we supposed to actually convince them to raid Mori Micro? All that does is knock out the one faction trying to keep this technology contained and research it for the good of the world.
We have no leads, and no information on the other faction.

yes, they might take our information, but they won't do what we want them to

>How can you say this when you are protesting my plan to allow the crab to heavily damage Chiba?
Easily. I care about Chiba because we're currently here.

Basically what >>32283361 outlined.
>>
>>32283285
>Get big and wait to receive it in melee. How big do you want to try to grow?
As big as it if we can manage it. Go melee, the whole fight we should be sapping it if we can. Also use gravity to our advantage during the fight to get in a few hits. Watch for its power over electromagnetism.
>>
>>32283308
>nanotech while we're actually working at the femtotech level?
Mori Micro might make a breakthrough any second now at QM's convenience. Hell, they don't even need to do that. They just need to make it (relatively) mass-producible and send an army of nanotech assassins at the MC.

>no reason to be starting kaiju attacks
They don't need a reason. They might start one with a lab accident.

>We have no leads, and no information on the other faction.
Then gather them before turning ourselves in.

>And how are we supposed to actually convince them to raid Mori Micro?
When the investigators get frustrated enough about knowing nothing.

It'll be fine, he might not be able to absorb stuff we're manipulating directly. Gotta test it to find out.

That didn't help the Bullseye-wannabe when we stopped his manipulated bullets.
>>
>>32283545

>>
>>32283426
>send an army of nanotech assassins at the MC
And why would they do that? There's no indication that they plan to do anything like that, they've had plenty of chances to kill us already, and haven't taken any of them.

On top of everything, you're assuming that Mori Micro hasn't already informed the national government and that they're working together.
The fact that something tried to target the crab with missiles, and that there are already helicopters observing it, suggest that either Mori is also in the weapons business, or the government knows and is keeping a lid on things.

I say we use our electromagnetism to propel ourselves at the beast like a bullet. Make ourselves a giant railgun and try to break through the plates in one shot. If possible assume a more areodynamic form so we can move faster and have better penetration.
Even if the beast can absorb electromagnetic forces like some people suspect; once we're in motion he has no way to slow us down.

You need to do some damage to this beast before it can make landfall. While you remain hesitant to venture forth into the sea to fight it, for fear of what other leviathans may lurk sleeping in the deep, it isn’t quite out of your reach just yet.

With a manic grin the red and black creeps up your face in slick pulsing veins, perhaps along the paths of blood that exist naturally beneath your skin. Your hair stands on end with the electric crackle as your wings reach their span and a you use their array to focus a condensed well of gravity in front of you. Air, water, sand, and the crackle of the abundant static in the air in this moment swirl and are drawn before you.

The heat of your lightening and gravitational pressure slowly turns sand into hot molten glass. Cooled as you see fit and for your purposes by the manipulated and charged water.

Mentally calculating the range to the creature and the materials on hand, you craft a sleek and grand projectile of water and glass, crackling with a rapidly changing current you hope will be too much for it to handle. The sky is clear and beautiful, the sun shining overhead. Light passing through the shaft of your condensed glass missile fluxuates and prisms as the electrical current courses through it and you cease the pull of your gravity on the loose sand and surf around you.

You will have first blood.

You feel an awareness other than the beast upon you from the bridge to your back. There is awe at the crackling of electrical arcs from your body and the loose sand and water that was momentarily airborne by your will.
>>
Rolled 4, 6, 4, 5, 3, 5, 1, 5, 2, 6, 5 = 46

>>32284801
There is a gasp as you let the sharpened missile fly at the rapidly bobbing head of the beast, perhaps ten miles away. Water close to the surface parts in it’s wake as it approaches subsonic speeds propelled by a combination of your gravitational push and linear induction. Streetlamps on the bridge behind your break, the figure there does not scream.

Spiralling toward your foe, the charge inside your glass missile keeps it on course despite the electromagnetic interference from the creature’s own powers. It shatters, after the tip slams into a gap in the armor around it’s shoulder with a slick and crackle. The charge of electricity washes over it and dissipates into the water around it, as the giant shards and fragments get caught in it’s fur or sink.

It bleeds. It grows angry. Hastening it’s approach, water sprays from beside it as it enters a full bore charge before it ducks its head forward and under the water, the rest of it’s body following suit down to the tail disappearing beneath the sea.

The sea is calm, save for the disturbances far beneath the helicopters. Some circle, others are moving toward the shore where you wait. Static prickles you, a charge is building up somewhere out there below the surface.

Less than a mile out to sea, you see a bulge in the water. A rising hump making it’s way toward you with particular speed and the occasional crackle of electricity.

9 vs 5.

2 Degrees of Success.

How do you want to spend them?

You can spend a degree of success to deal an additional wound to the beast.

You can bank it.

You can use it to describe an extra aspect of the scene.

Also, its a giant Armadillo Monster. Not a lobster. Not a crab.

Think a dire or monstrous version of this, all a crackle with electricity and giant...far less cute as well I suppose.

Final Destination for the degree. 5 minutes on the clock. Link this post. No comments, no dice, no nothing but the number and the number alone or you vote will not count.

1 More Damage and Bank
2 Use a degree to keep the public from further noticing you.

I say we spend both degrees to deal additional wounds. We want this over fast.

you know that even if you were in time, your vote wouldn't count

and stop putting on your name and trip, it's not working
>>
>>32285981

Where exactly in the rules does it state that if you have a name and/or trip, your vote doesn't get counted?
>>
>>32286045
Nowhere.
>>
>>32286045
>>32285981

It doesn't. Just dice, comments, and pictures. if you are a name or a trip I will not hold it against you. If you place a comment in the subject line, it will count.

Such are my final destinations.
>>
>>32286081
This was me:

I reversed that.

You can vote in a final destination if you have a name or a trip.

What voids it are dice, comments, pictures, or comments in the subject field

If it’s going to charge you, then you’ll do the same. It may be large, but you are concentrated power right now. Manipulating gravity, you accelerate increasing your mass against your foe. Before you meet the surface of the water breaks, and the nature of it’s sudden speed is unveiled. A tightly coiled sphere of armor rolls toward you, suffused with electrical discharge and crushing weight.

This beast, ten stories tall if the rumors of it’s Vegas rampage are to be believed, cured to half its height and bearing down on you like a force of nature would be terrifying to anyone. It makes you laugh. Following the twist of it’s axis you see a seam that you can plunge your rapidly moving fist in as your other hand slams flat and grips the surface of the armor.

The rising wall of water and wet sand on all sides is preceded by a quaking and crash louder than the thunder peeling off of the curled behemoth. It spin halted and your strength burning as you rend a plate from it’s hide and then throw the creature onto its side. It unfolds in a roaring yowl, water and debris falling all around you on the beach and shallows. It claws whip at the air while on it’s side before it rights itself.

You are strong. You threw a beast maybe one hundred times your size on it’s side and didn’t give it an inch of quarter. Though there is life yet in this monster, and the red and black hungers for it’s opportunity to feast. This display of how strong you’ve become excites you. Catching sight of your smiling black eyed reflection in the falling wall of water, you appreciate how happy you look this is making you despite the fear and the anxious impatience. Soon you will feast upon this monster’s source of power, and maybe upon it’s raw components as well.

The battle is joined.

Turn order:

Your Action & Enemy defense roll or counter
Enemy action & your defense roll or counter

You somehow know that on its action the enemy will attempt to claw you.

>Defense
No point letting ourselves get fucked.
>>
>>32286417
>Action
Use our cosmic awareness to pinpoint the veins and arteries exposed by the torn off armor plate, then use gravitational manipulation to send the plate slicing into the beast's flesh and vital blood channels.

>Defense
Use gravitational manipulation and wings to fly back and out of range of the creature's claws.
>>
>>32286544
>>32286577

Let me rephrase.

>What is your action?
>What is your defense?
>>
>>32286417
>Action
Try and blast into the area no longer protected by armor with your power.

>Defense
Dodge
>>
>>32286417
Dodge the claw. Claws are scary.
For attacking, I'd go with >>32286591 because that sounds like a sound plan.
>>
Delay.
>>
>>32286417
>>32286628
Fly staight up to dodge.
Smash right back down on a weakpoint to attack.

10 versus 1.

4 Degrees of Success.

How would you like to spend them?
>>
>>32288189
2 damage, 1 to keep people from noticing us, 1 banked.
>>
>>32288189
Can we burn some to start pulling out its nanites/whatever?
Otherwise lets drop one to make us lets noticeable, add another to damage, and bank two.
I like getting stronger.
>>
>>32288189
Bank 1, 2 to boost damage, and 1 to make people watching this shift their attention away, using our Nothing To See Here power to help people realize that the kaiju is dangerous and start running away instead of paying attention to the black-and-red figure fighting it.

2 to boost damage
1 to describe an aspect
Tsubasa flits around and away from the beast's claws like a pixie.

You can feel the pulsing of its nanomachines in time with it’s heart. Arterial veins close to the surface become as clear as day to you as you slam the broken edge of the armor plate you tore off back into it’s neck and grind it. It shrieks and sprays blood upon the wet sand. Your control over local gravity ends and the projectile drops to the sand with a squelch.

The person on the bridge runs to the north at your subtle psychic prodding, and the helicopters keep their distance, though more are appearing from the south. US Airforce and JSDF choppers in Joint Operation. They remain several minutes from arrival.

With a wet growl the monster’s massive clawed arm swipes at you. Curved claws crash into part of the river retention wall as you leap upwards and remain aloft by the humming charge of your wings. It snarls and snaps and flails at you as you duck and weave through it’s reach. Its weakening, slowing, and losing blood.

Its wonderful, you are aware of the universe around you in perfect clarity. Everything is so slow, and so small. In this perfect moment you move with a grace and beauty you didn’t think possible.

As wonderful as this is, it still breaths and you want what is inside, the chewy center beneath the crunchy shell.

>Your Offensive Action?
>Your defensive Action?
>>
>>32288690
I'd vote I bank most or all. Maybe one to damage.
>>
Rolled 6, 2, 2, 1, 4, 4, 6, 5, 3, 5, 6, 5 = 49

>>32288894
>Offensive

Crack
Eat
>Defensive
Just dance around it to avoid it's dying throes.
>>
>>32288952
This sounds good. Nice and simple.
>>
>>32288894
>Offense
Dive in, increasing our density and using our gravitational control to turn ourselves into a rod from the gods, and aim straight in towards the open wound we created. Once in, begin drawing the nanomachine colonies to us.

>Defense
Curl our electro-gravitational wings around ourselves into a protect shell while we're inside the beast's body.
>>
I need to call today's thread here. Continuing soon.

Thank you all for playing, I hope you enjoyed wailing on the giant monster.
>>
>>32288894
The nanites are sentient aren't they?
there's no way they'd want to remain a part of this thing. Call them out and devour them.
Other than that, dodge around it, its just taking its time with dying.
>>
>>32289034
>Call them out and devour them.
That requires being in physical contact with the creature, and maintaining the contact while the nanomachines travel from where they are to where we have physical contact.
>>
>>32289015
Thanks for running.
>>
>>32289034
>>32289072
>>32288894
Pin it to the beach with gravity, then.
