LAST EPISODE: You talked to some fans, and dealt with an unpleasant squatter.
- - -

"So...we have a bottle of special Sake." Sana says as she looks at the bottle on the table. "Wonder how it tastes."

"Don't even think it." Sato says. "Anyway, it's not exactly a fancy brand."

"But the aftertaste is something to be desired." Star says, holding up her PKE meter and a few other detection tools (One that is a converted hair crimper). "I don't know what the old hag did, but you know that Anti-PKE field that was around the temple? Same phenomenon is occurring in a small radius around the bottle."

"Really?" Akira asks. "So, this thing drains PKE just by being near it?"

"Yeah, but it's more like it nullifies it...unless it disperses it." Star says.

"So we have no idea." You say.

"It's just a matter of recording the reaction, and taking the steps to recreate it." Star says. "Handbook 101, just because we don't understand the initial 'how' doesn't mean we can't later."

"But we don't know how long it'll take us to do this." Akira says. "Kayako's mother was able to manipulate PKE energies and this thing has been distilling itself within her temple for years. That doesn't sound like something we could easily recreate in a weekend."

"It'll probably take a month." Sato says.

"Maybe, but we'll have other jobs to do, and we've still got one more Avatar of Oiwa waiting, I want Kayako out of the way by the end of the week." Akira says. "Zapped and trapped."

"Well, we'll certainly keep the data." Star says. "But there's the question of what do we do with this stuff now?"
>>
>>32292567
"The sake itself is what's really potent, right? I say we brew our own mix." Akira says. "Mix it in with the Posi-Slime, and then go in guns blazing."

"I thought we were going against a head-on approach." Sato says. "If we're clever about this, we can turn this into a missile, launch it right into the house and WHAM, then we come in with mop-up."

"That's presuming it'll work." Sato says. "We need to find a way to inject the stuff into the slime mass. This stuff is PKE poison, we get the Legion mass to consume it, it'll rot itself from the inside out."

"What if you just drank the stuff?" Sana asks.

Everyone turns to look at her with lidded gaze.

"This isn't a party." Akira says.

"Nah, nah." Sana says. "That stuff is making the bottle anti-ghost, right? So whatever is in it becomes anti-ghost. Why don't you all chug the stuff and won't you all get to be anti-ghost for a bit? Probably enough to get you inside the house, right?"

"You want us to take on a ghost...while we're all drunk?!" Star asks.

"Well, maybe you can bathe in it, I dunno. You've got to admit, you four have had worse ideas." Sana says.

"She's got a point." You say.

> Remember you only have the one bottle, there's not enough Blessed Sake to spread around multiple plans.

Are we going to the house right away? Is there any possibility of putting that off for a day or two so we can study the sake?

>>32292903
That is an option yes, but, like everything, there will be consequences, and a chance that just two days of study will not net you any further benefits.

>>32292569

We really didn't spend too many resources (practically none) aquiring the bottle, nor do I expect any use of it would drain us at all.

I'm in favor of >>32292836 but we can still try to combine it with one of the other options provided by the conference. Having a backup is never a bad thing, and hitting it with everything we got.

https://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/32146528/#32154125
I'm still in favor of Rookie's "Big Guns" plan. Worked phenominally in New York and it'll have practical uses even after the mission.

Pluck core sucker out with a proton cannon and get it into the Super Slammer trap on the YOMI-1
>>
>>32292950
Then there's a chance we can take the tiniest drop of sake out and test what it does to posi-slime? Maybe narrow our options by one? Just a thought also: data data data
>>
>>32293013
Opening it would likely break some magic seal or something.
>>
>>32293120
ah, nevermind then. I'll argue against the missile/rocket on the basis of the possibility that the entity might put it off course in transit/possibility that it won't detonate on impact.
>>
>>32292993
I could go for making some bigger guns also.
>>
>>32292569
> Okay...call me crazy...but I like Sana's idea.
>> Heavy Tech plan, 'And if that don't work, use a Bigger Gun.'
It's not like the house is going to walk up and leave, and we only spent like a few hours getting that bottle.

If the house DOES end up walking and leaving, we might very well still need those big guns
>>
>>32293158
So, I'm seeing a 2-vote split between Sana's plan, Akira's plan, and 'Study the Stuff and Get Bigger Guns' plan. (Which will take a few days, you have all you need to build the bigger guns...at least to a point where they can be used and probably won't fail, it's just a matter of time.)

I'm voting for Star's plan. The sake's anti-PKE effect is from nullifying humours; the sake will be nullifying our own natural PKE/humours to te point that there will be unkntended side-effects and it'll get used up before we can use it in the house. Or it'll cut out while we're still fighting it.
>>
>>32293332
"Okay," You say. "This is going to sound like a stupid idea."

"I'm amazed you feel the need to say that at this point of our careers." Akira says.

"Point." You say. "But I like Sana's plan," You hold up a hand. "With an addition. I want to go back to the earlier idea of us just putting together the biggest proton blaster and slime sprayers that we can manage. We give ourselves an edge with the sake, and then go for broke."

"That doesn't sound too stupid. I mean other than the fact that we'll be working complex machinery under the influence of alcohol." Star says.

"One bottle split four ways isn't going to totally wipe us out." Sato says.

"True...but that also might mean that the effect will be lessened." Akira says, as he drums his fingers. "What if we made it a double assault?"

"Hmm?" You ask.

"Some people hang outside with the big guns and blast the living hell out of the place...and in the meantime, someone takes a couple of doses of the sake and uses the assault as a distraction to get inside the house."

"Risky." Star says.

"Well what isn't in our line of work?" Akira says.

> Star's right, let's just divvy up the sake across all four of us and go in directly with heavy tech.
> I like Akira's plan, if we have an assault team and an infiltration team we'll hit her on both sides.

We got a better chance of doing it that way, I feel
>>
>>32293510
PKE stems from strong emotions, fear, anger, even joy. We can try to calm ourselves and thus not burn off so much PKE on our way in.

I'd say we and Sana are the most emotionally controlled of the lot.

>>32293526
> I like Akira's plan, if we have an assault team and an infiltration team we'll hit her on both sides.
>>
>>32293617
We did show we're capable of emotional control such as in the Subway by Kali tempting out our heroism, or the time we entered the house and resisted "saving" the girl who turned out to be a black slime conjuration.

>>32293526
>If I may make an alteration to the plan? If just one person goes in, they'll be able to bring in some Sake with them, and not just in their gut.
If we dilute the sake too much, it won't have much of an effect.
>>
> Have to step out for a moment will be back @ 7ish.

You agree on Akira's plan and get to work.

Building the heavy duty guns, and getting an industrial power-washer and converting it into a slime blower (tanker truck would take too long) will take 3 days, which you will also be using to study the sake's effect on PKE

In the meantime, however, you don't know how, but PAGAN. The Anti-'Ghost Abuse' group has found out about your planned assault on Kayako's place...and is protesting it. They've got a sit in set up at the front of the lane that leads to the house. (No one's gone near the house...you hope.) You can see it on the news. PAGAN's gotten worse, if it was possible, a lot of mikos, 'exorcists,' 'spiritualists,' and other 'supernatural experts' who chafed under P-COC's presence have flocked under their banner. Just sending Yurei out as a scare tactic might not work anymore.

"Well...that's going to be a pain in the ass." Sato says from behind his wielder mask.

"More like a pain in theirs when I jam my proton wand up the-"

"AKIRA!"

"What?"

> As I said I have to step away for a bit, in the meantime you can all discuss ways to deal with PAGAN.
>>
>>32293776
Hmm, I wonder can we get the entire neighbourhood on our side on this. I mean, they have lost friends, loved ones and people they know to Kayako's building. Don't they want they want they place where they live to be safe if not for them, then for their kids? Let them force the issue against PAGAN.
>>
>>32293776
We should make sure that we inform the P-COC about our plan to remove a clear and present threat to the local community. Maybe we can get them to get rid of PAGAN.

Otherwise, we can check in with the police, and make sure that PAGAN has filed for and received the proper permits for this protest.
>>
>>32293776
>At this point, I had wished we'd gone and helped the Youkai before the house assault
Hmm, maybe we can see if Kali or Rini and her gang can help?

"You think we don't give a shit about Ghosts? Why don't you come and ask someone actually from the living impaired.

A foreign nation wanted to extradite these Jiangshi as foreign nationals, likely to exterminate them, when we stepped in and pointed out that they are in fact, not foreigners. They are PARANORMAL entity's, and because we found them in Japan, they are JAPANESE.

(if we could get Rini to show up.) If that isn't enough, why not speak to other Japanese Youkai. That's right, you know, the children of Amaterasu herself?"

>>32293850
There's also this
>>
>>32293926
We bring out Kali, Rini, and maybe even Yurei to give a good report of us.

Then ask them "how many Ghosts or Paranormals have YOU helped?"
>>

He sighs. "Legally they can only stand in your way, chant, and annoy you. If they attack you or your equipment, I'd have something to work with, but they have some ACTUAL con-artists with them that are running legal."

"So why are they attacking us and our work?" Star asks.

"SINCE WHEN were we consider to be a PMC?!" Star asks.

"Since that became a PAGAN talking point." Yasuo sighs. "Look, just...get one of them to punch you in the face. I know it would brighter Lady Une's day."

"You sure?" You ask.

Sana pats you on the cheek and winks. "Trust me. Okay?"

"Why is Sana so frightening when she's cheerful?" Star asks.

Akira sighs and shakes his head. "If we had the rest of the week, probably. But nothing we can use right now. Central will be happy though." He gets behind the wheel.

"Well that's something." Star says as she gets in. "But I suppose we shouldn't waste any more time, especially now with PAGAN camping out there."

"I just hope this tech holds together." Sato says, finding his seat and closing the door.

"I thought you said that it would hold." You say as you brace yourself as Akira launches the car onto the streets.

"Well, yeah, but we're doing everything at a gallop pace." Sato says. "As the ancients say 'The suit of armor that is dressed simply can be faulted for forgetting his pants...or something like that?"

"What?" Star asks.

"It means we shouldn't let this fight drag on any longer than we have to, also there's a reason for the giant cooler full of ice that I loaded into the truck." Sato says.

In no time flat, thanks to Akira's manic driving, you arrive at the PAGAN protest...only it's not exactly a protest anymore.

There's a second crowd of people, they're all dressed in white, and each of them is carrying a framed, black and white photo of another person. They are quiet and solemn, not looking at anyone.

They all look up at you guys though. They quietly make a perimeter around YOMI-1 and slowly walk with it. Almost like a vigil.

The PAGAN crowd parts instantly as the crowd of Mourners walks through them. There are still news cameras here and there, and...well...it's hard to yell slogans at sobbing parents.

Mourners are touching the sides of YOMI-1, mumblings prayers, crying, and a few saying 'Thank you.' Over and over again.

PAGAN had no choice but to part their line and let YOMI-1 drive down the lane.
>>
>>32295461
"That...was amazing." You say.

"Yeah." Akira says.

There's a pause.

"You think those were all people that Sana found, or did she just call in her actor friends?" Star asks.

"Either way, it's impressive." Sato says. "Anyway...we're here. Let's unload and get to work!"

"Hang on." You say. "The moment we do, Kayako's going to be trying to mess with our minds. Paragoggles on, and keep your PKE meters up until you start firing. I've got a PKE reading on her illusions, so we'll be able to spot them, but she's not a fool. Once she sees that they don't work, she'll probably change tactics."

"Got it." Akira says. "So...who's having a little liquid courage before hand?"

"You mean a LOT of liquid courage." Sato says. "I have to say, GUI is NOT recommended in the handbook."

"GUI?"

"Ghostbusting under the influence."

"Ah."

Wait...the house that was across the lane. Before it was abandoned...now it's painted blue and has a car in the driveway.

"Akira?" You call out. "Akira!" You shout.

No answer.

You notice that there's a note pinned to your uniform with a Ghostbuster's pin.

Daisuke-

We stumbled our way inside. She hasn't noticed us. You are very very drunk. So am I. (You can tell from the handwriting) House is showing Chronologogigig-house is doing weird shit with time.

Also, left you on stairs, walked down stairs, you weren't on stairs until I went up stairs and down-house does weird shit with space too.

Trying to stay in one place, but house is very spinny, and doors are multiple and confusing.

Whatever it may be, it's clear to you now that her husband's assault didn't instantly kill her. She asphyxiated, right there, in a lot of pain.

Lovely.

Although, seeing as she's there, trapped in her death throes, and not off hunting you or Akira in some horrible PKE manifest form, means that she still can't sense you...you really hope that means she can't see you either. She hasn't looked at the base of the stairs yet.

You're still very very drunk...but she's right there.

You stagger into the bathroom as Akira pushes you into in. He bangs his boot and shin against the bathtub's rim with a loud thump.

I'm wondering if the whole building isn't just a giant illusion at this point, or a massive slime construction in which case it'd be like trying to filter out water from a pool.

Ghostbusters New York (extreme guys) once busted an entire mansion that turned out to be a huge slime construction with a single solid core piece, just like this one.

You pull your ectogoggles back over your...oh wow, yeah. You understand why you took them off, being drunk with these things on is NOT pleasant and an easy way to get a headache.

Also every surface of this place is covered with black slime and you see the screaming faces of trapped souls trying to claw their way out of the walls.

The tub is just a giant pulsing mass of slime, and you see the corpses of the kid and the cat, waterlogged, bloated and rotted. they're just staring at you impassively, as they float there.

"Come on." You say. "We're taking her out, now."

"That's what you said earlier, and why I had to find you." Akira says. He groans and holds his head. "I don't think we would have remained sane in this place."

"Well that's why we're drunk." You say.

You both walk out back into the foyer, just in time to see three school girls run up the stairs screaming in fear.

One of them trips and falls down the stairs, landing hard on her side and her head with a nasty crack.

Something black appears on the stairs and crawls down towards the sobbing and mewing girl, croaking, as black hair covers its face.

"Fuck!" Akira shouts as he pulls his wand. "Wait..." he pauses and looks at you. "Is...is this really happening?"

"I don't know." You say as you watch the scene. Kayako is moving slowly, to ensure that the girl is at the height of fear and pain when she takes her.

I mean, this is something that did happen...but is it happening now? Are you here now, or just watching when? If you interfere now, will it change things then, or does nothing matter but now. If so is the crawling Kayako the Now Kayako or is she somewhere else? Or will shooting the Then Kayako right Now cause an effect Later?

Only someone who's as drunk as you two are could keep track of that nonsense...or at least try. The tech helps too.

Okay, you're pretty sure you can't help the girls. This is a classic PKE playback manifestation. Ghostbuster 101 stuff. This house is just recording everything that goes on within it, and then playing it back all at once.

Still a mind bender.

What you AREN'T sure of is if blasting this Attacking Kayako manifestation will hurt her. It could, since it is technically her, and any assault on her PKE signature will hurt...but it could be like biting the tail off of a lizard. It'll hurt her, but she'll survive it and grow a new one.

You can hear the Stairs Kayako groaning as well, so it would be easy to just push past the Past Vision and go for that one.

"Hey, on your six." Akira says.

You turn and see ANOTHER Kayako, standing there in the archway to the living room. She's dressed in shrine maiden clothing, clothing she must have worn as a child. She's still making that croaking noise...but she has her head tilted and her visible eye is looking towards the pair of you.

The sake must be wearing off, and since she's wearing priestess robes, that must mean she's detected her mother's scent on you. That can't be good.

"Damn shell game." Akira says. "We could try one each, but I'd rather blast one really really hard. That would certainly hurt her."

All three of them are fake.
The base of 'Find the Lady' is to make the mark (us) think he can beat the dealer (her). The game is rigged so that no matter what the mark does, the dealer can take his money and even if the mark picks a winning card, one of the shills working with the dealer places a higher bet and the dealer announces he takes the "highest bet." and the shill wins the game.

That's what I don't get.
We saw Kayako's ghost at the stairs, and the souls of everyone trapped here, but nothing from the boy.
And as for the cat; this is Japan. Bakeneko's are a common and dangerous entity. After being killed like that, I would have expected a bakeneko to arise from the cat's tortured soul.

We're running out of time, and I just hope that we're not wrong about this.

You grab Akira, making sure that he is who he is with your goggles and the PKE meter, and head to the bathroom.

You open the door and both walk inside.

The corpses are still there, floating in the pure black slime.

It takes a little adjustment of the PKE meter and connecting it to the spectrogoggles...but you get it.

Kayako is many things. An avatar of Oiwa. A host of unclean essence. A victim of a traumatic crime. A legion-class entity that was made up of all the souls she has claimed and amplified their own hate.

But she is also a mother. A mother who wanted to be nothing like her mother.

The illusion is gone, and you see a woman in a cheap floral print dress, a beige skirt, and sensible shoes. Her throat is purple and twisted, her hair is a mess, and a soft croaking sound comes out of her ruined throat.

She's holding the blue body of her dead son, the boy holding a kitten corpse.

She looks up at you two and she flinches and scoots backwards in her tub. She clutches her son's body tighter and shakes her head.

She can't talk, or communicate, but the message is clear.

"Go away."

Any other entity with her power might have tried to expand their border, to grow the house, grow her collection...she kept it in her yard. Yes, people who trespass upon her are victims of her rage...but that's it. Part of Kayako...kept this evil sealed.

It's hard to think of her as a victim in this, but seeing her like this...it's hard to not.

Still, if she's not dealt with, the deaths will continue and none of these souls will find rest.

This would be unfortunate, but not necessarily out of the question. When the Rookie and the original ghostbusters fought a juvenile Sloar they did not free the Ghosts within but instead trapped them.

And as Vince Clortho said, the Shulls and Zubbs of another universe learned what is was like to be "roasted in the depths (seeing as how they should've really died well before that).

Maybe they won't rest now, but one judgement day from now they will.

That said, we should find any way we can to freeing these souls and Kayako from whatever is cursing her and the lot.

>"...what would we say to her?"
"How can we help you?"
Or maybe...
>>32299710
Go after her husband?
...
Do we have any of the sake left?
...
How would she react to giving her and her child proper last rites?
AGH. I'm grasping at straws here. I hate being thick.

this >>32300316
Sounds pretty good.

Few who have come to her were exorcists, fewer of them would have ever gotten this far, fewer still are blessed by holy Sake or have nuclear reactors on their backs.

But we have, so that must mean we aren't worth nothing to get here.
>>
>>32300410
Give the child his last rights?

Are we even qualified to do that?
>>
>>32300524
We can get it to someone who is.
>>
>>32300524
No...but a priestess might be...

>>32300543
She's not going in here.
>>
>>32300543
No... but maybe the kid's body can come out to her?

"Out of all you've encountered, let our resistance be proof enough we are most qualified to say 'we can help you'. Our window of opportunity is fading, if you want us to help you, it has to be soon." You say.

She looks at you for a moment, and then looks down and makes a louder croaking noise. Then she stops and shakes her head.

"If I may?" A voice says behind you.

You and Akira both spin around, a woman is standing there.

You know this woman. A tight red dress, red hair, one of the most strikingly beautiful people you've ever seen in your life. You saw her after the game show.

"Don't bother talking back to me boys, I'm not in the same time as you are...although I am impressed that you got this far on your own...and drunk." She smiles and you feel your breath catch in your throat and your coveralls grow tight in the lower areas.

"She's got a touch of me in her, maternal love, rage, hate, fighting all the damn time...she's mine." She grins. "Which means I can speak for her."

She takes a drag on a cigarette. "Don't tell him about this, I'm trying to quit anyway."

Okay, stupid plan time. And since it's coming from me, I really mean "stupid".
If Kayako allows us, we take the kid (and the kitten's) body for last rites.
Someone call whatsername with the arrows.
If we have any of the sake left, anoint the bodies with it. That might buy us some time.
Maybe stick core Kayako in a ghost trap if she wants to come, get her last rites as well.
Call outside team to start shooting, 'cause the moment we start moving, so will the rest of the Legion-house.
If whatsername gets there quick, we may not have to run far. Maybe perform last rites right out on the street (if that's proper). Otherwise, we gun and run.
If rites work, then maybe we can zap and trap the rest of the weakened Legion.
Considering how many IFS there are in this plan, it's REALLY not a good plan.

And... ignore that. "Cause while I've been typing, this happened:

"Anyway, I'd thought I'd give her the words she cannot say, seeing as how the Old Man might think it's funny watching you two stumble around drunk, I want to see a fight. Anyway, she will not leave her son. If you want to fight her, she'll lash out at you with her full force and not even the sake can help you. However, she'll submit if you can give her son peace. That means, however, you have to go upstairs and face it."

"Her husband?" You ask.

She shakes her head. "If you said her husband or anything really, then you two are as stupid as you are cute. Her husband was long ago consumed by her, ripped apart to nothing. You'll be facing her idea of her husband, a Ghost that haunts a Ghost if you will...of course, that's just skimming the surface. There's also all the hate she has for her mother, for her life, the self-hatred she has for her affair, and a shred of hatred for her accidental son...and the pile of self loathing that comes with that." The woman grins. "THAT'S what's been keeping her here...that thing in the tub is Kayako...

"Kayako's Grudge awaits you upstairs."

"Now that you've beaten Kayako's illusion and the weird time issues, she'll let you get close enough. And the WONDERFUL fight the other two are having outside, should be keeping it weak enough for you two to trap it. Do it, and her Son's soul will be freed, and she'll go into your trap willingly. Good luck." She says, and the red headed woman vanishes like the other illusions.

Kayako makes a soft croaking noise at the both of you as she looks at you with what could been seen as a shred of hope.

"I think I was happier when I was drunk." Akira says.

FUN thread, challenging and thought provoking, thanks.

Now to use what time we have left to really digest what we need to do.
>>
I wish i could have been here for the last two hours but I had to go to work. In fact I'm posting this from work.
>>
Does anyone want to talk about how Oiwa just showed up and helped us?
I mean come on 'she's mine'?
>>
>>32304007
All Oiwa wants is good publicity and to be remembered fondly.

Hmmm, we really have to get on that soon.
