“So uh, you like dogs, huh?” you say. “I guess that’s a good convo starter with ladies, I mean, but you know I’m underage, right?”

Dog walker lets out a frustrated shout. “Insolent mutt! Do not think your feminine wiles can seduce me into sparing your life!”

You snicker. Did he just say feminine wiles with a straight face? (-4 Stress: 69/100)

“Dare you mock me?!” he yells. Suddenly, he erupts in a curtain of flame. Fire rolls off of every inch of skin. He takes another menacing step toward you. You can feel the heat radiating off of him from where you sit – the pavement bubbles and cracks beneath his feet. He’s actually pretty damn scary, aside from his Saturday morning cartoon villainy. (Dogwalker: 45/45 HP) There’s no way you’d be able to take him in a fight, but you just need to hold him a couple more seconds.

“Sorry dude, you’re just like, way more metal than I was even expecting,” you say, still giggling to yourself. “It’s hard to take you seriously.” You feel light headed. Maybe it’s blood loss. (-3 Stress: 66/100)

The demon raises a claw toward you. A point of fire begins gathering at the tip of his index. “Laugh and burn, fleshling!!” he screams.

A stream of uninterrupted white thunder slams into dogwalker’s shoulder, knocking him off balance, and cutting his death beam short.
>>
You look over. The Hallow family convertible blazes straight toward the demon, Cassandra behind the wheel wearing a soldier’s helmet and Harvey propped up in the passenger side seat with a foot on the dashboard and a glowing golden M-16 in hand. He sends bursts of automatic gunfire into the demon as Cassandra floors it.

At the last moment. He jumps down into his seat and throws both hands onto the dash. A corona of glorious white energy sheathes the entire car in its holy envelope, turning the blue corvette a miraculously bright shade of the purest gold.

The demon lets out a bellow of rage, and dives out of the way. Cassandra hits the e-brake, puts the car into a slide, and smashes the demon with the side of the angel-powered car like a baseball bat.

Dogwalker goes flying, and sprawls out into the road in a smoking, seething heap. Harvey reloads, stands up in his seat, and opens up a continuous spray of gunfire into the demon while Cassandra steps out, picks a shotgun up out of the back, and pumps shell after shell into the hellish being. The chorus of gunfire is incessant.

They both keep shooting until they run out of bullets, but you can tell they don’t need any more. Dogwalker is done for the day. (Dogwalker: 0/45 HP)

Harvey jumps out of the car in your direction, and begins jamming another magazine into the rifle.
>>
>>32294064

“Sierra? Get away from the hellhound,” Cassandra says in a calm tone, rapidly thumbing more shells into her own weapon.

Reeber gets on his paws and goes into a low stance, growling angrily at the demonbane.

>>

Tweed wasn't so bad. Sure he was willing and able to throw down with us, but he really just wanted to go home.
>>
You scramble to your feet and put yourself between them and the dog. “Stop shooting everything!” you say. “He’s my dog! You know, probably?”

The Hallows hesitate, but they don’t lower their weapons

“Seriously?” you ask. You look back at the hellhound. “Reeber, sit.”

The dog looks stupidly up at you.

“Ugh. Dogwalker trained you in the wrong language,” you say. You place a hand on his rear and force it down. Though he could have easily resisted the force, Reeber follows your lead into sitting. You hold a hand out. “Stay,” you tell him. You go to move away, and he begins getting up, so you stop again, make eye contact with the animal, and hold your hand out again. “I said fucking stay!”

Reeber seems to get the message, and remains stationary while his tail wags as you look over to Harvey and Cassandra, who both wear perplexed looks on their faces.
>>
>>32294632

“Seriously I don’t even know,” you say. You look at your savagely dripping claws, then back up at the Hallows’ weapons. You notice specks of blood in your vision. You panic for a second, but then realize it’s just on your glasses. “Just FYI,” you say, daintily taking your glasses off with your claws so you don’t break them, “you guys have it easy with magicking up guns and crap, I’m like, a guaranteed mess in a fight.”

“Where’s Ro?” Harvey asks.

“Present,” comes Ro’s voice. She pushes through the apartment complex door and comes limping out. She looks like she’s in pain – probably too much running on that foot brace. She freezes up at the sight of you. You see a trace of fear, but it’s replaced with one of concern. “Goodness, Sierra – you look awful.” You think maybe she’s not going to blab about the whole Verwelken thing just yet.

You see Cassandra toss her shotgun in the driver’s side chair and throwing towels down in the back of the convertible. “We can worry about how we look later girls, let’s get home first.”

>Yeah, let’s do that.

>>

“Where’s Reeber sitting?” you ask without really thinking about it.

“I don’t think my car can seat a hellhound,” says Cassandra.

You turn back to Reeber. “Hey boy. Can you like, look like a German Shepard again?” The dog does not understand. You grab his head and shake it. It seems like the thing to do. You’re reminided that you’re out of mortal peril for the time being. It’s a good thought. (-15 Stress: 51/100)

Reeber, however, is just doing nothing. You look him in the eye, and try to communicate everything with a hard glare. Surprisingly, the hellhound barks once, and then that weird holographic kind of thing comes back and suddenly you’re looking at a blood-stained German Shepard. “Nice,” you say, tousling the hell dog’s fake fur coat. Reeber barks in reply.

You hear sirens in the distance.

“We need to go,” says Harvey, perhaps hearing what you do.

Cassandra doesn’t seem keen on you taking the dog with you as you bring it up to the side of the car.

“The dog saved my life. It comes or I go,” you say flatly.

“I saw what happened,” Rowan says from where she’s take up seat.. “That hellhound saved both of us.”

“Okay okay,” Cass relents. “The dog comes with us.”

You don’t have anything to say to that, so you join with everybody else in piling into the convertible and driving off. You sit with a dog over your lap.
>>
>>32295282

You don’t really get it – you know Reeber is a huge hellhound, but right now he feels like a regular dog, and has the weight of a regular dog. If it wasn’t for the blood, he’d be indistinguishable from a regular dog.

“So like, aren’t a bunch of dead hell things going to freak people out?” you ask, idly scratching Reeber's ears. “I mean, that’s got to make it onto tonight’s news, right?”

“Probably not,” says Cassandra.

“What, is there some huge kind of conspiracy or something?” you ask, smirking.

“There doesn’t have to be,” says Harvey.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” you ask.

“Well,” says Cassandra.

Rowan groans. “Shut up mom, no one wants to hear a history lesson right now!” So you don’t.

Later, you’re finishing up in the shower. Luckily blood isn’t hard to get out of your hair. It’s times like this you’re glad you don’t have long hair. You can hear some stuff going on in the rest of the house, but you’re pretty content where you are. (-15 Stress: 36/100)

You’re in no hurry. You lean against the wall and stand there under a torrent of hot water and kind of zone out for a while in the steam. Bleh. You’re tired. You want to have a boring day for once. (-5 Stress: 31/100)

Your thoughts drift to Reeber. Did your family have a dog? You don’t remember a German Shepard in the house when you were in Kindergarten. But you did remember seeing hellhounds before. Where the hell could you have possibly seen a hellhound before? Maybe your demon mom took you to hell one time? You can’t remember anything – you think you were too little.

Eventually, you feel that you’re ready to emerge as a new human being. You step out, dry off, and wipe off the mirror. You examine your face, and see you’ve got shark teeth and the black veins. Huh. You didn’t even realize it. You work your jaw around and rub your face until it goes away. You notice your nails are getting a little long as you do so, and having vowed to break your nail-biting habit one too many times, you start rifling through drawers for a pair of nail clippers.

You open one drawer. Shaving crap. Nope. Another. First aid stuff. Okay, good to know. You open another. There’s the nail cli - “Aagh!”
>>
>>32295808

You scream, shoving the drawer shut again and staggering backward. You hit the wall before you can stop yourself. It takes a moment to corral your racing heartbeat. (+3 Stress: 34/10))

“Sierra?” you hear from outside. “Are you okay in there?”

“Yeah,” you yell back. “Just… got surprised.” Which isn’t totally untrue.

You scowl, open the drawer, and pull out the nail clippers. You give the scissors that were resting beside them the evil eye. Who puts fucking scissors in same drawer as the nail clippers, where they can sneak up on you like that? Hell, who keeps scissors anywhere but the rummage drawer in the kitchen? When you have a house, everything’s going to be where it fucking belongs.

A couple minutes later, you come out of the bathroom wearing your PJ’s and a scowl. You notice Rowan’s door is slightly ajar – she was probably the one that asked if you were okay.

You can hear a conversation going on downstairs, and you’re certain you hear Isaac’s voice playing a part in it. Part of you just wants to lie down in the guest bedroom and not move for the next twelve hours. Reeber’s stuck in the backyard. It’s small, but he should be okay without you for a while.

First thing’s first, you think. Rowan deserves to hear from you about this Verwelken crap. She’s been more than patient with you. You pad over to her door, knock, and push it open.

Rowan lies on her bed, staring at the ceiling. She rolls over onto her side and look at you as you open the door.

“Um. Is it okay if I come in?” you ask tentatively.

“Yep. Shut the door behind you though.”

You do as you are bidden, and find Rowan’s room very dark when it’s illuminated only by a novelty bat signal lamp. You meander over to the beanbag chair, maybe stepping on and breaking something in the process, but Rowan doesn’t say anything until you flop down.

“So yeah,” you say, continuing a conversation you and Rowan haven’t had yet, “I guess I’m part Verwelken too.”

Rowan gives you a hard, almost accusing look.

You knead your forehead. “Don’t give me that. I didn’t know if I could trust you people. And then you’re being all nice and crap, and I find out somebody like me killed your batman grampa – what am I supposed to do?” you say.

The two of you sit in silence for a moment.

Rowan speaks up. “That night at the hospital,” she says, “I thought I figured it out. That you were afraid of what you were. I mean, you are, kind of. But the thing you were really afraid of the whole time was us, wasn’t it.”
>>
>>32299054

You don’t deign that with a response. Of course the Hallows are scary. Besides being badasses, they act like it’s all normal. You’ve never seen ‘normal’ before. And seriously, demon hunting isn’t normal at all to begin with.

She speaks again. “Sierra, are you scared of me?”

You consider the question carefully. “Well. Not anymore,” you say. “I mean. You saved my life, right? That’s got to count for something. I don’t know. Aren’t you afraid of me?”

Rowan thinks it over for a second. “I think you pigging out on hellhound blood was disgusting as all get out,” she says, “but I wouldn’t say I’m afraid of you, even when you… you know, show your claws and teeth and whatever. You don’t even look that scary with your glasses on.”

“Hey,” you say. You take exception to that.

“Okay, maybe somebody who didn’t know you would think you looked freaky,” Rowan amends. “That’s not a problem for me. I think I’m worried about what can happen to you, though. I could see you struggling when I came out of the house – that fight put you pretty close to going over, didn’t it?”

You don’t like to remember how close you came to losing your cool. If it weren’t for Cassandra’s timely arrival, dogwalker might have triggered another episode. “Close,” you decide to answer, “but maybe I was closer to getting killed first. I can’t say, really.”

“You sound better now.”

“Yeah, I guess,” you say. “So are we cool?”
>>
>>32299071

“We’re cool,” says Rowan. “But you need to tell dad about the Verwelken thing. You saved me like, three times more than I saved you today, so he’ll take that into consideration before making any snap judgments.”

“Snap judgments?” you ask. You’re not sure you like the sound of that.

Rowan sighs. “If he does freak out, just come get me and I’ll yell at him or something.” She pauses. “Hey. Did you fall over or something in the bathroom?”

“What? Why?” you say, a little too suddenly.

“When you screamed, it took me a second to realize it was you. I’ve never heard you make such a high-pitched sound before.”

A variety of contradicting excuses and half-truthed answers swarm in your mind for a second. And then two seconds. Three. Four.

Rowan sits up slightly. “Sierra?”

“Fucking scissors,” you grumble to yourself. You stand and pick your way toward the door. “I’m going to talk to Isaac.”

“Oh. Okay,” says Rowan, taken off guard by your dodgy response. Thankfully she doesn’t push the issue.

You walk out and mostly close the door before heading downstairs.

“-already knew where Ro goes to school, probably for months. The Infernus wasn’t subtle about it when he went after her. Meckor knew she was injured – she’d be an easy target – he was trying to get me back for killing the Stygian.” Isaac is pacing back and forth in the kitchen, talking on the phone. Cassandra sits at the dinner table, carefully feeding bullets from a bulky ammo box into empty magazines. A clean Reeber the not-German-Shepard sits calmly by the side of her chair. He looks slightly damp, as if someone hosed him off and toweled him dry.
>>
>>32299535
“Dammit, yes, this is a request for assistance,” says Isaac, leaning over the counter and leaning on one hand. As whoever on the other side replies, Isaac’s grip on the phone tightens, and his knuckles go white. “Yes, I understand just fine.” He suddenly hangs up. “Thanks for nothing,” he says to the phone, glowering at it.

“We’ll be fine,” Cassandra says, sounding oddly calm.

Isaac takes a slow breath. “That’s right,” he says.

Reeber catches sight of you, and begins wagging his tail.

Isaac takes note of the motion and looks over at the stairs. “Oh. Hey Sierra, how are you doing?”

You finish walking down the stairs. “Better, thanks,” you say. You’re kind of distracted by something more pressing, however. “But there’s something I should probably tell you.” You’re not looking forward to this. (+3 Stress: 37/100)

Isaac waves you through to the dinner table, and takes a seat. You sit down in a chair near Cassandra. Immediately, Reeber trots over to your side and shoves his head across your lap. You ruffle his ears, impressed by his forward display of affection. (-2 Stress: 35/100)

“Do tell,” says Cassandra, smiling briefly up at you as she continues refilling magazines.

“Well, you know how I’m part Belphegoran and part Infernus?” you say.

“Yes,” says Isaac. “And I know how you were drinking blood earlier, but that’s completely, well uh, normal. That is, for someone like you. A hellborn with that heritage, that is.” He seems nonplussed at the subject.

Cassandra continues loading bullets. “That’s not what you were talking about, was it.”

“Yeah no,” you say. “I think I’m uh. Part… Verwelken?”

Cass stops her task for a moment.

Isaac blinks. “Why do you say that?” he asks, doing a good job of keeping his expression and voice neutral.

“Because I do the stuff,” you say vaguely. “It’s why I was asking about it earlier.”
>>
>>32299978

Isaac seems conflicted. “That’s… that can’t be right,” he says. “You’re Infernus. Maybe you’re misunderstanding one of your powers?”

You figure it’ll just be easier to show him and prove it than talk about it. “It’s actually kind of obvious,” you say. You lift a hand, which casts a faint shadow on the table under the ceiling light. You stare at it, and gently nudge the shadow with your will, budging it slightly to one side, and slightly to the other.

Isaac watches in disbelief. Something about his expression makes you nervous. (+3 Stress: 38/100) Cassandra puts down the half-loaded magazine. “Sierra, you should explain why you hid this from us.”

>I was waiting for a good time to tell you.

None of them really seemed to have a good reaction when Verwlken were brought up the first time and from what we know their job is basically hunting down demons and hellborn. If they were in our place, would they have brought it up?
>>
>>32300080
and we are not we would tell them after this and besides it feels like more of a dodge then anything else it dose not tell them WHY we were hidding it just lets them know we WOULD keep hidding it

If we go with this option

>>
>>32300480
We may have wanted to, but I read the confession as basically saying that while we wanted to, we figure we would never have managed to build up the courage to actually do it.
>>
“It didn’t make sense to tell you anything,” you say. “I mean, I didn’t know anything and then you were saying being part of two demons was really rare and stuff, and you were acting like it was really dangerous when I was just a two-parter hellborn. I didn’t know how you’d take it if you found out I was like, even more than that,” you say, getting the feeling you still don’t know what will happen as you’re telling them.

“So I didn’t say anything. And then I asked about it, and Ro got all quiet and you said Verwelkens killed your dad, and I guess I was scared you’d kick me to the curb or something if you found out.”

Cassandra shakes her head. “We couldn’t do that to you,” she says.

You look down at the dog in your lap, and watch as you trace circles in his fur. “Well I didn’t know that. I’ve known a lot of people, and all of them have something they can’t stand. I didn’t want to risk you guys over something… so insignificant.”
>>
>>32300523
Isaac seems to have regained enough composure to speak. “Honestly, I don’t know what to say right now,” he says. He takes a moment to rub the scruff on his jaw. “If you were anyone else, I won’t lie, I’d probably get a kick out of throwing you out. I wouldn’t be able to trust my family with you after keeping something like that back.” He waits a second to compose his thoughts. He brings his hands together up on the table. “But today, you risked your life to save my girl. You’ve done more for me than the people whose job it is to help me. That practically makes you family, as far as I’m concerned.”

Cassandra smiles and goes back to bullet loading.

You feel an uncomfortable pressure inside your chest at Isaac’s words, but you kind of like the feeling anyway. (-15 Stress: 23/100) “If that’s all conditioned on me saving Rowan, I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t tell you all this yesterday,” you say, laughing nervously to yourself.

“Yeah, maybe that,” Isaac replies, chuckling afterwards.

Heh. Good thing you’ll never have to find out what might have happened. You like how it turned out just fine.

This was interesting. I kinda assumed Meckor didn't have many actual demonic subordinates he could chuck at people, that his little 'fiefdom' was mostly humans and hellborn.

Won't lie, at first I thought the dogs/dogwalker were some kind of horrible astral gestalt creature that eats divine beings. Or something along those lines.
>>
>>32302547
He is known to hate humans, and would refuse to deal with them or even hellborn unless absolutely necessary, so presumably he has a fair few actual demon underlings. I seem to remember it being said that he had seven (? may have been "several") demon lieutenants at the least, though there may be further pure demons in lesser positions. We slaughtered one of his LTs in the supermarket, but had to hulk out to survive; the dog walker may have been another one of the LTs, but could also have been a lesser underling since going out after two wounded opponents on a revenge mission feels like something that would have been delegated.

>This was interesting. I kinda assumed Meckor didn't have many actual demonic subordinates he could chuck at people, that his little 'fiefdom' was mostly humans and hellborn.
That's a bad assumption, since the Hallows already told us that Meckor refuses to deal directly with anyone other than his pure demon subordinates. He'd need to have a lot of those to manage an organization of his size that way.
