As I said before, I'm running GBFQ today because I might not be able to on Friday. It'll most likely end up being a short thread, but at least we'll have something!

Characters and Gunpla: http://pastebin.com/tNr0mtYH

You are JACK FOULKE, an amateur Gunpla Fighter with dreams to make your own mark on the Gunpla battle scene!

You are currently sitting in the back of Mason's van with your estranged, one time childhood friend, Charlotte. The rest of your friends seem to be distracted talking among themselves, which leaves you with a bit of privacy with Charlotte. At least for the moment.

The problem was figuring out what to say. How do you start a conversation with a girl you've only met once in a decade?

>You uh, look good.
>So... you have a Kampfer now?
>I hope you didn't forget about that rematch.

"So... I see you've started using a Kampfer now." You say.

"Oh, yeah, I guess that's starting to become common knowledge, huh?" Charlotte chuckles. "Wanna see it?"

"Sure!" You grin. "Uh, you can see what's left of my GM Juggler. It's still the same GM you fought against."

Yeah, you never did have the chance to actually fix it after the 3v3 finals, so It was still in a pretty mangled state.

"I can see that!" Charlotte's eyes almost glitter at the sight. "I can tell just by looking you've put a lot of love into it. You even added a Juggler system!"

"Yeah. It was sorta my sister Holly's idea. She really loves Balls."

Charlotte blinks and begins to speak before you cut her off.

"Believe me, I have heard literally EVERY Ball joke there is, and I've beaten people to a pulp over it at times. Please... just don't." You sigh.

"Noted." Charlotte nods.

You then take the chance to examine Charlotte's Kampfer. It was masterfully built, with a bit of wear and tear due to the recent battling. However, you see that it's also quite similar to the Kampfer Amazing you saw the Meijin using a couple years ago.

"You trying to become the next Meijin?" You grin.

"Oh please, I always did have a soft spot for the Kampfer. Fast and deadly. Just how I like it." Charlotte says. "Kampfer Espada has never failed me yet. The only thing I took from the Amazing was the weapon binder system, but even that I had to scratch build since they refuse to release the specs publicly."

"That's cool." You nod, turning the Kampfer Espada over in your hands. "So what kind of weapons is it backing?"

"That's classified information~." Charlotte puts a finger to her lips. "A fighter can't give away all her secrets, you know!"

"True." You laugh.

"So... are you actually going to go pro?" You ask. "Try for a spot in the World Tournament?"

"I'm thinking about it." Charlotte shrugs. "The thing is, for something like that, I'd need parental consent to join, and my parents... well..."

"Let me guess. They think Gunpla is for kids."

"Bingo."

God you really hated people who thought like that.

"Jeez, that would really suck if you couldn't get in because of a reason like that." You shake your head.

"I'm sure I can find a way to twist their arms into doing it." Charlotte chuckles. "You don't get a lot of chances to go to the World Tournament, you know?"

"Well, it'd be cool to get into the WT and all, but I'm mostly in it for the fun. Plus, I gotta help out my Gunpla team. School drama and all."

"Ah, I see." Charlotte says, her voice tinged with a hint of dejection.

"You know." Karen then turns around in her seat to face you. "Since our school is a register Gunpla Battle School, the top ranked students have a chance to get sent to the World Tournament as special entries."

Jesus, did she hear everything?

"Well, I guess that's something we can work towards, too." You say.

"So, hey, this is the same Charlotte you told us about, right?" Mac turns in his seat as well.

"I'd like to know that, too." Lucina adds in.

Oh god, now it was beginning.

"...yes." You say.

"Cool!" Mac grins. "You wouldn't believe how much he emoed over you disappearing! He'd cry in his room, write edgy poetry, the works!"

"R-really?" Charlotte blinks.

"No. Don't listen to Mac. He is a liar and a bad person in general." You grunt.

"It's nice to meet you." Lucina holds out her hand for Charlotte to shake. "I really look forward to battling you someday."

"What's your Gunpla?" Charlotte asks.

"An Exia."

"Ooooooh." Charlotte grins.

The rest of the drive is spent with everybody sharing details of their Gunpla with one another. From what you managed to glean from Charlotte, her Kampfer Espada was armed to the teeth, and even had a couple "trump cards" that she wouldn't elaborate on.

However, the reunion had to end sometime, and the van finally pulls to a stop.

"Alright, this is the last stop for our little lady here." Mason says.

You all look out the window and your jaws all collectively drop.

Charlotte lived in a freaking honest to god MANSION.

"Yeah..." Charlotte smiles somewhat awkwardly. "This is, uh, my house. Thanks for the ride, by the way!"

Charlotte unbuckles her seat belt and is about to get up when she pauses. "Hey, can I see your phone for a second?"

"Yeah, sure." You hand it to her. Charlotte hits a few buttons and hands it back to you.

"There! Now you've got my cell number. Call me anytime for that rematch, or if you just want to hang out, or something."

"Thanks." You smile.

With that, Charlotte disembarks from the van and gives you one final wave before beginning the long trek up to the front door of the mansion. The van rumbles as Mason turns on the engine again, and you continue your journey home.

"So Karen," You say, narrowing your eyes. "Can you tell me more about this 'special entry' stuff?"

"Oh, I thought It was common knowledge." Karen blinks. "Well, during the WT qualifier rounds, our school runs its own mini tournament. The top four teams each select a single fighter, and they're put through two elimination rounds. The fighter that comes out on top then receives a ticket grating them special entry into the World Tournament, which they can use themselves or give to somebody else, though it's restricted to anybody on their own team or one of the other three finalists."

"That's it?" You say. "Sounds pretty simple."

"Yes, well, the thing is that if we want a shot at it, we have to reach the top four before the qualifiers officially begin, which is in about a month or two."

"So we don't have a lot of time then." You frown.

"It's certainly a lot of pressure." Karen nods. "I would understand if you wouldn't want to go for it."

"So hey, uh, Jake, sorry again for completely wrecking TUSKER." You say apologetically.

"Ah, don't worry, it happens." Jake shrugs as he chews on a french fry. "Stuff like that happens all the time, especially with a suit that packs as much firepower as mine does. Besides, the prize points should more than make up for repairs, and then some."

"Yeah, I just wanted to let you know I wasn't trying to damage TUSKER more than I needed to."

"Yeah, I know. But then again, battles wouldn't be as exciting if our Gunpla wasn't on the line, right?"

"You got a point." You nod. "Hey, Lucina, Mac, I saw your second match, but how did you first match go?"

"We fought a trio of Gundam Roses that fancied themselves the Three Musketeers." Mac chuckles. "They were actually a lot tougher than we gave them credit for. The leader actually gave Lucina a run for her money!"

"I'm used to countering slashing attacks. Having to guard against an opponent that completely relies on thrusts was something of a learning experience." Lucina admits. "They also had anti-beam coated tabards, which meant I couldn't really use my beam sabers or GN pistol against them, so I had to rely wholly on my GN Blade to do the job."

"You know, funny thing. We faced off against three Tequila Gundams modeled after the Three Amigos." You laugh.

"Weird." Mac chuckles. "Maybe those guys were related?"

"Who knows." You shrug. "How did you and Jake fare?"

"Ah, well, I proved that Colts were superior to flintlocks."

"And I proved that armored or anti-beam coated or not, a direct hit from dual 180mm armor piercing shells will pretty much wreck anything." Jake says simply.

As expected.

Finally, you all finish up your food and return to the van. The rest of the trip back to the store is rather quiet and uneventful, up until you exit the van one final time.

"Okay, see you guys at school!" Amy says cheerfully as she waves farewell.

"Yeah, see you." You wave back as Amy and Jake depart.

"Yeah, I think I'll go him with Lucina." You say.

"Of course you will." Mac snorts and rolls his eyes. "Have a good one, man."

"Yeah, I'll see you later then." You grin as you tap knuckles with him.

As always, you and Lucina walk home together, since you both live in the same direction. Holly tags along as well, because, well, she's your sister and you live together, too.

"You know, Jack, I might consider signing up for the 1v1 in the next tournament." Lucina muses. "Seems like I can meet a lot of strong opponents there."

"What, you don't like team battles?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, not exactly, it's just... team battles have a lot of extra concerns." Lucina shrugs. "Like what happened in our finals match. It's very easy for a fighter to get ganged up on, and that sort of fighting is just not very fun. At least not for me."

"Makes sense. Some people prefer it that way." You nod and turn to Holly. "What about you, Holly? You going to keep doing tournaments?"

"Maybe." Holly nods. "But I think I'm more content on just building more Balls. But I did learn a lot so I know what to do with my next battle Ball!"

"Good for you!" You smile as you ruffle Holly's hair.

>>
>>32300128
No, that's definitely the case. Gundams dominate the battlefield. Especially the current era. SEED, 00, AGE, Unicorn...one mecha armies, those. The old shows at least had the decency for the protagonist to only destroy a dozen or so enemy mobile suits on their own. These days? That's a warmup.
>>
>>32300090
I don't think 08th MS had any fights where they were HUGELY outnumber, at least from what I recall from my shitty memory.

But does 08th MS count as a 'gundam' ... ?

8th MS Team
How about that time against the Ace in the Gouf?
>>
>>32300166
Which is why I excluded OVAs. The Ground-types are Gundams, though. Just made out of spare RX-78 and GM parts.
>>
>>32300166
08th usually had fairly even numbers. Sometimes the enemy would actually be outnumbered by them, like in the famous Norris Packard fight scene. Who would think that one man in a slightly customized Gouf could cause so much damage? No Zaku, indeed.
>>
>>32300150
00 first season at least show us that sheer number can overwhelm gundam.
>>
>>32300193
They're "Gundams" that have worse performance than the mass production version, though. They were overly ambitious designs. That's why the EZ-8 had such high performance compared to the rest, because it didn't try to be fancy.
>>
>>32300166
The Ground Gundams were inferior performance-wise to GMs.
The EZ-8 is a Ground Gundam kitbashed with spare parts from other machines, which actually improves its performance- plus it's not considered a Gundam at all.

Oh, yeah. Logically it should actually do better than a regular Gunpla, since showing battle damage is a good way to express craftsmanship. And that's what really determines your Gunpla's strength. In fact, that actually happen in the finale of Build Fighters. Yuki doesn't have time to do a proper repair of Amazing Exia, so he converts it into an Exia Repair model. And it kicks ass.

Yeah. They tend to be pretty obscure, and of course most of them are in Japanese, so they're actually really easy to miss. Like, "Zaku" is actually a pun on the idiomatic word "zako", which refers to weak military forces suitable only for cannon fodder. It's also the onomatopoeia of soldiers marching in formation, oddly enough. I wonder what that implies about Japanese military culture?

"You go on ahead, Holly, I think I'm gonna stay over at Lucina's tonight." You say.

"Ooooooh, again?" Holly's eyes flash. "Are you gonna-"

"No." You say, flicking your sister in the forehead. "It's nothing like that. Tell Mom and Dad for me, okay?"

"How do you know that they'll-"

"Because Mom and Dad look for any excuse to get me out of the house. Double points if it's with a girl." You grunt. "Plus it's a weekend. They don't really have reason to say no."

"Fiiiiiiine. I'll go tell them." Holly pouts.

"Thanks."

"Sleeping over again?" Lucina tilts her head slightly.

"Yeah. Is that a problem?"

"No, not at all." Lucina shakes her head. "What were planning?"

"I'm finally gonna get you to watch some damn Gundam already." You say, pulling out your flash drive with almost every Gundam series stored in it.

"Ah..."

"We got all Saturday night to do this." You say.

"Well, I did agree to it." Lucina concedes. "Let's go."

The two of you then walk back to Lucina's home. It's not really that much different from yours. Not a huge mansion like Charlotte's, but it was nice and cozy. And rather quiet, too. Lucina was an only child so she didn't have any siblings to pester you. Lucina's mother was usually at home, but she wasn't very talkative, and honestly, she scared the living shits out of you. You're not sure why, but it was just the way she seemed to carry herself. Lucina's father was hardly home, either. From what you understand, he was in the Army and was currently deployed.

"Ah, Lucina, you're home." Lucina's mom states simply. Her eyes then dart over to you. "Jack."

"Um, hi Lucina's Mom." You say nervously.

"Well, you know the rules here already, so I don't need to tell you." Lucina's Mom then disappears behind a door, thought to you it looked like she was melding back into the shadows from whence she came.

You really gotta ask Lucina why her mom was like that one of these days.

The two of you then head up to Lucina's room. Unlike Holly's, which was pretty girly, Lucina's room was pretty plain. Actually, it reminded you more of your own room than anything, with some furniture, a computer ,and Gunpla modeling tools lying around.

Lucina lets you shower first. After spending time inside a cramped building with hundreds of other gunpla fighters, you're pretty sure the both of you pinked up quite a stench. You quickly clean yourself up and get dressed in a spare set of clothes you brought with you, and you were done in like 5 minutes. You never really did like using the bathroom in other people's homes. You always felt guilty doing it for some reason.

"Okay, your turn, Lucina." You say as you walk out.

As disciplined and straightforward she was, Lucina was still a girl, and you knew she'd take at least half an hour inside the bathroom, so you try to decide what series to start her off on.

You decide to queue up Gundam 00. Sure, you probably would have preferred her to start off on the original series, but the UC timeline was pretty sprawling and more than a little convoluted. Not exactly something you wanted to subject a beginner to. Plus, she was rolling with an Exia, so you think it would be nice to see the series based on her gunpla.

"Alright, are we ready?" Lucina says as she walks out of the bathroom, wringing the last of the moisture out of her hair.

"Yep!" You grin, booting up the first episode. "Behold, the wonders of Gundam 00!"

....

....

...

"So what did you think?" You say as the credits of the last episode begin to roll.

"So... Tieria is supposed to be a girl, right?" Lucina asks.

"No... they were pretty clear on him being a guy." You sigh. Lucina always seemed to get hung up on the weirdest things.

"Weird." Lucina frowns.

"Anything else?"

"A lot of people died."

"Yeah, that's kinda the normal thing in most Gundam series." You say.

"Kind of sad, really. I liked some of them." Lucina nods.

"You and me both." You sigh. "How about the actual battling?"

"Mmmmmm, I really did like the Exia parts." Lucina nods. "I think I need more swords."

Oh boy.

Oh yeah, she's going to like having this. Honestly, I'm surprised she doesn't have it already. Isn't Trans-Am mentioned on the model kit? Maybe she just didn't know what it was, so she just glossed over it as being technobabble.

>>32300854
It's about nine hours of footage, if you include credits. If we skipped them it's more like eight and a half. It's LAAAAAAATE.
>>
Hmm, I'm wondering now...could Gunpla Battle cover quantization? I mean, Plavsky particles can teleport things, so would a teleporting Gunpla be out of the question? Because if not, maybe we can use the excuse of it being GN technology to give Lucina a sort of teleporting armory. Call it Exia Babylon, or something like that. Having a thousand different swords she could call in as needed would be pretty cool. Or even just being able to access a new sword when in Trans-Am, to drive in the idea of it being a super mode. At the very least we could probably just have the swords carried by an invisible Sillhouette Flyer.

It was the goddamn sun.

Shiiiiiiit. How long did you stay up?

"I think..." You yawn. "We should get some sleep."

Might as well try and milk this with more tactics and upgrade talk with the morning crowd since we're all rested now.

I thought up some interesting idea for the balls. As we know that they are less suited for ground combat.

So I'm thinking why we can't upgrade it with more thruster or giving them wheels?

Beside balls, we seriously need to learn how to fight without balls. Because we can't keep on depending them in all fight.
>>
>>32307497
They're nice, but I agree with you. We're a touch helpless when they're gone.
Ideally I'd like to attach some servo arms to us to hold additional armaments, but i think we're out of hard points.

The last upgrade we did was to our balls, so I think it's about time we put our plans in motion to turn our Gunpla into a field commander like we discussed a thread or two back. (move as a team and offer support).
>>
>>32307497
Why not? The Balls are useful and we held our own in the last fight
>>
the balls definitely hard and useful but we need to improve our own suit.I'm thinking a simple better shield and beam rifle would be a nice bass line for us to build our tactical commander suit around. being the team support I could be pretty cool and we could also use those skills and abilities to better command the balls
>>
>>32309229
As of right now, we can get a better shield but not a better rifle.

We can get a better melee weapon such as the beam spear which has longer range and the heat knife which is cheap, doesn't cost us a hardpoint, and makes a decent backup weapon
