“So they're looking for residuals?” You ask, eying the matrons clustered around the nosewheel of your fighter- the Chance-Vought team, augmented by Kenji and a couple of his crew still working on installing the new turbine disc.

Ice nods, having come down from helping them when you wandered into the hangar. You're almost impressed with her- she's got her hair pulled back in a pony tail and her clothes are almost as respectably stained as the rest of the ground crew's. She's been helping them, by her own admission, though the way it was said makes you think she's looking for something by doing so, some kind of reassurance, maybe.

“Ok, let's pretend I don't know a damn thing about magic.” You say, folding your arms across your chest. “The hell are residuals?”

Ice sighs. “Magic tends to linger a bit in it's focus, kind of like my grandma's ring.” She says, wiping her hands again on an already-stained rag she's got stuffed in a pocket. “They're looking for residual energy from Merlin's magic in the fighter, to see if it's significantly different from what they should be.”

You nod, kind of tracking. “So what should they be like?”

1/2 (maybe 3, not sure)
>>
She snorts. “No one knows! That's the trouble. They're looking for something they don't even know. They're not establishing a baseline for what she can do naturally, and that just means they're wasting their time.”

You shrug. “Well, they are matrons, presumably they know what they're doing, right?”

“They're supposed to.” She says, nodding. “But in this case, I think they're doing it backwards. They should have Samantha talk to the fighter like she can do to get a read on what her residuals should look like to begin with, then go in after a fight and see what they look like.”

“I thought that seemed odd.” You admit, nodding thoughtfully. “What about Merlin?” You indicate your RIO, sitting up in her seat, occasionally twisting back to talk to the crew on the fighter's back. She's got some systems up, running off a standard APU cart nearby.

It's Ice's turn to shrug. “Systems work, I think. Something with getting your turbine there reinstalled and hooked in correctly. I never really realized how but engineering went into a steelwing...”

You nod. “Yeah, they're pretty amazing, huh?” You ask, thinking about it. Ten million parts, all working together to let you hurl yourself through the air and piss all over Newton's laws. Well, maybe with a little help from Merlin, you amend.

Ok, a lot of help from Merlin.

>>
“Well, yes, but that's not what I meant.” She says. “One of our strikers, even the Wyverns, there's nowhere near as much to it as there is to your fighter. Just a magical jet and some focii, really. Our electronics are all separate units, and so are our weapons. It's really kind of amazing how a fighter is designed to be this whole system, and strikers are just part of one. I'd never thought about it like that before I helped out up there.”

You chuckle. “Getting a new feel for how we do things?”

She nods, which kind of surprises you. “It's so...different.” She says, after a minute. “I'm not even sure I've wrapped my head around it yet. You have to think so differently, maybe that's why you're able to do what you do?” She shakes her head.

“I'm not sure.” She says, after a half second. “It's just... I'm starting to think there's a lot more going on that you know about than what you're telling us.”

[x] “Ice, I'm being totally honest when I say I'm just as confused as you are.”

You shake your head with a bit of a frustrated sigh. “Ice, I'm not going to bullshit you. I'm just as confused as you are.”

“I thought you'd say that.” She says, sounding kind of depressed at the admission. “Most men like you don't know what they're doing, or how they're doing it. Every one of them says the same thing. They just... do. Do you know how frustrating that is?”

“I- well, kind of?” You respond, thinking of just about every time you've had to hold a conversation with a female at length. Like now.

“We study for years, we learn all these things about how magic is, how it can and can't act, and we all experence every single limitation we have. Sometimes painfully.” She says, rubbing her arm. “Magic drains us, sometimes you come back and feel like you could sleep forever.” She turns, and jams a finger into your chest.

“Then someone like you comes along where you don't even know what you're doing, you have no idea how to control it, and it's clearly killing you and- and we can't help. You know how that feels? We're watching our... we're watching your talent eat you alive and there's nothing we can do and you're telling us not to worry about it!”

You take an involuntary step back under the words, holding up your hands. “Woah, I-”

“And these bitches want to focus on Samantha like she's the one with the talent here!” She says.

[] “I know you didn't mean that the way it sounded, boss. Let's go get a drink or something, ok? You sound like you need to vent.”

It sounds more like she's meaning that Fronk is the one getting hurt because of what they don't understand, and that's making her worry. [x] “I know you didn't mean that the way it sounded, boss. Let's go get a drink or something, ok? You sound like you need to vent.”

You've got too much self control to let the anger you feel at that statement come to the fore, especially because you know it wasn't meant the way it sounded. She's worried and she's letting it color her views of the matron's efforts- honestly, you think they're trying to establish what they know before they start in with things they don't understand. At least, that's what you think they're trying to do, you're not sure enough.

“Listen, Ice, I know you didn't mean that the way it sounded. Let's go get a drink or something, ok? You sound like you need to vent.” You offer.

She pauses, then nods. “You're right. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that at all. And you're right. I'm not sure the club is open yet though.”

“Let's go see anyway.” You say, leading the way out of the hangar and out onto the tarmac.

The base club- seems like every airbase everywhere has one- is an all hours affair, and you're able to procure a pair of glasses of ice water without too much trouble, though you struggle for a bit to order.

You carry them over to the corner booth where Ice is sitting, and she nods her thanks, taking a sip. “Thanks Frank.” She says. “I needed that.”

“So what's eating you?” You say, after a second. “Besides the obvious, I mean.”

1/3
>>
She shakes her head. “The matrons and I disagree on what the focus of their efforts should be.” She says, bitterness evident in her voice. “I think they should be focusing on you, but they disagree, and want to focus on Samantha first. Everything else aside, she's not the one killing herself up there.”

“Didn't you say she was hurt after Berlin?” You ask, cringing internally at the concept. If she was, it was your fault.

“Not really.” Ice responds. “She was out of it, sure, but not anymore than any other witch would have been after something like that. But you were in a coma for-” She shakes her head again. “We know flaws can exist in a witch, like with Georgette Le- er, Mackintosh.”

You rub your side. “Didn't seem so flawed to me.” You point out, calling attention to when she'd healed you from the near-dead.

Ice shakes her head. “You didn't watch her, though. Using her talent kicks her metabolism into overdrive like you wouldn't believe. You ever wonder why she cooks so much? When she uses her talent, she'll eat it all.”

You nod, though you didn't know that. “And you think I've got something similar?”

Ice shrugs. “Maybe? Male talent is strange to us. It's all... “ She pauses, struggling for a word. “Well, it's all talent. Our magic is part what we're born with, part what we learn at the academy, and part practical learning, out here in the world. For you,” She indicates you directly, “It's all instinctual. That's why it's so hard to figure it out- it's usually much less visible.”

2/3
>>
“But I'm an exception?” You ask.

She fixes you with a blank stare. “You show me one other pilot on earth that can drop his fighter near vertically in a controlled stall, then freeze it in the air to get a gunshot on a witch. Show me one other pilot on earth that can make complete fools of sixty other air superiority steelwings and get shots in on a dreadnaught throwing everything it has his way.”

“Point.” You respond, chuckling. “So what do you think?”

She shakes her head again, balling her fist on the table. “I don't Know!” She says, frustrate. “I think maybe your talent is flawed, but somehow it's worse. There's theories out there that say magic is somehow linked to life. They're mostly garbage, but maybe in this case there's something to it.”

You frown. “So the more I do it, the more it's going to take?”

She shakes her head. “I don't think so, because you've always recovered. I think it's got more to do with how hard you're pushing. How hard did you try against Young? When you really tried, I mean?”

I'm not citing Tanana because we really don't know how it would have affected Frank post-battle because he ended up with a chest full of shrapnel. And since we acknowledge that we probably spent less over Tanana than we did over Berlin, both statements are correct.

>[x] Well, it was no Berlin, but she wasn't that easy to handle.

I want to say Tanana but Tanana itself was different, unrefined if you will.
>>
>>32402132
But the lower mark is more useful.
If Berlin was 80 and Tanana was 60, and we only used 45 to beat Young, though it is true that 45 is less than 80 and 60, 60 is the better figure to use since its closer to the actual figure.
>>
>>32402241
Enumerating usage of gnome magi-talent like that is a bit useless when, as >>32402186
pointed out, we've refined our use of the ability with every major engagement. Tanana, compared to Berlin and the Young fight, was sloppy. True, we may have used 60% of our total Gnome potential at both Tanana and the Young fight, but the whole seems to have grown- otherwise, we would probably have been dead several times over. Signs point to Frank's gnomehood evolving and growing as we move through the quest. Direct comparison to Tanana now may not be useful at all, beyond saying that Frank has definitely gotten better with his freaky deaky male magic Saiyan shenanigans.

[x] Well, it was no Berlin, but she wasn't that easy to handle.

You frown, having not thought about it before. You don't really think about it, usually, you just do it- like Ice said, it's instinctual, not conscious. “Well, it was no Berlin, but she wasn't that easy to handle.” You say, still frowning, trying to put it into words that make sense. “Maybe about as hard as I was over Tanana, maybe a bit more? It's hard for me to say, really.”

Ice pauses at the mention of Tanana, but nods. “So, not the hardest you've ever tried, but you did have to try?”

You nod with a shrug. “I guess so? She's one of the best I've run into, but she's still not on par with dreadnaughts and a cloud of fighters.”

Ice nods. “That make sense. You looked rough after the flight against Young, but you looked...”

She pauses, then shakes her head. “You looked dead after Berlin. You stopped breathing a couple times, you know that?”

“I had no idea.” You respond, and she nods, her eyes staring somewhere beyond your table.

“We thought you weren't going to make it for a few hours.” She says, simply, then shakes her head again, as if to clear it. “That's why I think there's something to the theory that whatever your talent is, it's flawed. The harder you push, the harder it tries to kill you.”

“But that would mean that there's nothing we can do about it.” You say. “Right?”

She nods, then pauses, chewing on her lower lip. “Yes. Well, kind of.”

You quirk an eyebrow. “Define kind of.”

“I- well.” She says, a blush growing on her cheeks. “T-there's a thing. That witches can do for the people they have a connection with a-and-”

“A thing?” You prompt.

Ice nods, looking down and stirring her water with a finger. “Yes. A thing. I'm not even sure it would help, b-but... we can always ask Slider to try it i-if we think we need to.”

With a quiet whimper, she eased her hand into his. Taking it, Frank gave her hand a gentle squeeze and she sighed in contentedness, laying her head upon his shoulder. The sunset was especially beautiful over the Atlantic.

"You know, Frank," she admitted quietly, and she honestly couldn't think of a better moment, "I love you."

She felt, rather than saw, his smile. "I know, doll, I know." There was nowhere else she'd rather be than with her man, sitting here on the edge of the battlements of Barin, watching the sunset.

[x] “Maybe we should talk about what this thing is?”

“Maybe we should talk about what this thing is?” You say, taking a drink of your water.

“It's... well, it's kind of intimate, a-and....” Ice starts, causing you to choke on your water.

“It's what?” You ask, surprised.

“Not like that!” She says, shaking her head. “Not like that at all! I-it's just a trick, really. You loan some of your power to another person, nothing lewd.”

“Sounds like it could be.” You observe.

She about chokes. “M-maybe, but I don't mean it like that! I-I was just thinking you have a connection with Rachel and she could do it, she would if we asked!”

“So why her?” You ask. “I mean, Merlin's practically family, an- I'm going to guess by the look on your face that the connection you're talking about is lewd.”

Ice nods.

“Figures.” You respond, then look at her. “So you think Slider has a thing for me? I always figured she was just joking around.”

Ice buries her face in her hands. “C-can we not go into that?” She asks. “I don't want to say anything I shouldn't.”

You consider pressing her on the issue, but decide to let it go- you can always ask Slider later anyway.

Any further questions you may have had are aborted when you head the door open and Merlin and Rosalie walk in, looking around. Seeing you, they walk over, both of them already in flight gear.

“Hi Frank!” Merlin beams. “W-we're ready to go! I got the weather and f-flightplan loaded on the jet already a-and Kenji and the crew are loading up the equipment.”

You nod, moving to stand up. “You hear that, boss?”

She nods, weakly, still hiding her face. “Yeah. I'll head over with Rosalie, we'll leave last. I want to thank the base commander for letting us stay here.”

You nod. “Sounds fine to me. I've gotta hit the shop anyway.”

Merlin walks alongside, her vest rattling around- despite being custom sized to her, it's still a hair big, and she's had to have the straps modified to cinch down tight enough.

“How's weather look?” You ask, looking up at the clear Mediterranean sky.

“C-clear almost all the w-way up.” She answers. “S-some overcast over the channel and the c-castle though.”

“No shock there.” You say, looking over at the tarmac, where an aircraft tug is positioning the wyvern near the pair of RAF hawk trainers- you're surprised they haven't left yet. As you watch, the Hawk pilots- and their passengers, a pair of matrons, head out to the flight line, the matrons mounting the light trainers while the pilots do a walkaround.

Katya and Slider glide by as you walk in the hangar, their greetings lost in the high-pitched whine of their strikers jets. Still, you wave to them and Katya waves back, Slider instead nodding towards you.

“I-I'll wait here.” Merlin says as you hit the small locker room in the hangar- the lockers all hang open, the room usually unused. Your gear sits laid out lovingly along the wooden bench, your helmet resting next to your vest.

“Hello my love. I have laid out your equipment, but tell me, do you really need so many things? What do they all do?” Konstantina says from the corner- how you missed her earlier is anyone's guess. Then again, she's damned good at hiding when she wants to.

She's gonna have a hell of a time organizing 7.62 mags around those giant knockers regardless. The pouches in the drawing are too small and almost inaccessible.

Gotta get them battle belt or stick 'em in her giant tank legs like a reasonable person.

[x] “It's harder being a pilot than you think, I need all this to do my job.”

“It's harder being a pilot than you think, I need all of this to do my job.” You say, unbuttoning your shirt- you've got a standard issue brown undershirt on under it, but Konstantina still blushes and looks away. “Think of it like my knight's armor.”

“My love is a knight of the people, then.” She says, sounding like she's making a proclamation. “Is it safe to look? I- I do not wish to be improper.”

You zip up your flight suit, nodding. “Yeah.”

She turns back, moving over to take your BDUs and fold them. “What is all of that?” She asks, as you shrug on the G-suit and the rescue vest over it.

“The bottom one is a G suit.” You say, lightly tapping it with your knuckles. “It helps keep the blood up in my head and down out of my legs in high G turns. The vest is a rescue vest, in case I get shot down.”

“My love is too modest.” She responds. “Surely you do not need that, darling? No one alive can match you!”

“Better to be safe than sorry.” You say, zipping the vest up and reaching for your helmet and your gloves.

She wrinkles her nose at the sight of your gloves- you've never gotten another pair and you don't plan to any time soon. “Why does my beloved wear such filthy things? The soviet people would never allow a hero to be so poorly treated!”

You laugh and shake your head. “I chose to. They're good luck.”

“Good....luck?” She says, sounding confused. “My love surely does not believe in such strange things.”

You shrug. “Can't hurt, right? Besides, they're comfy.”

She tilts her head to the side. “My darling is strange.” She says. “But it does not matter. I cannot wait for our turn to fly against each other again.”

You nod. “Should be interesting.”

She smiles. “I promise I will be much more of a challenge than these other loose women!” She says, loudly. “But I must leave. I promised the matron-general I would not dawdle and I fear she will revoke privileges if I do. I will greet you at barin, my love!”

And with that, she leaves, letting you finish getting geared up in relative peace.

“Ready to g-go?” Merlin asks as you step out- a redundant question, but you nod all the same.

Your Wyvern now stands almost alone, the next nearest aircraft being a USAF C-130 nearby, it's tail ramp down. Brigette stands nearby your fighter, her rifle slung and a tank witch's cannon strapped to her back.

“Ah, baron. I be tinkin it about time you be ready to go.” She says, nodding. “Me girls an me, we be loaded up 'waitin.”

[x] “Sorry bout the wait then, maman Brigette.”
[x] “You know that Konstantina was in the locker room, yeah?”

“Sorry about the wait, then, maman Brigette.” You respond, smiling as she helps Merlin up to the ladder. “Hey, you know Konstantina was in the locker room, yeah?”

She looks back at you. “I didn't be knowin that, non.” she says, shaking her head and clucking her tongue. “She be sneakier than I be givin her credit for, it be true.”

“It was no big deal, I just figured you should know.” You say, reaching up for the ladder.

“Merci beaucoup baron.” She says, pronouncing the last such that you're pretty sure Rosalie would have winced. “You be 'needin a hand up now, do ya?”

You laugh and shake your head. “You just want an excuse to get your hands on me.” You say, swinging up on the ladder and climbing up the side of your fighter's forward fuselage.

She laughs. “Ye be too smart for me, baron. No girl be havin the control to be resistin you, I tink.”

You grin, then motion her back as Merlin starts the pre-start checklist and buttons the cockpit up. She crosses well behind your fighter, walking aboard the waiting Hercules.

Your jets sound normal as Merlin brings them both up, nothing at all unusual about either- and she starts them out of order, just so you both can hear any irregularities in your number two plant right away.

The -130 starts rolling as you line up on the runway, looking around briefly. “Ready to go back, Merlin?”

“Yeah. Tower's giving us clearance, take heading three four zero at angels twenty five.” She says, reading your air corridor for you. “VORTAC is available as backup, we'll be on GPS most of the way up, I'll monitor ATC and Guard.”

You take off relatively sedately, climbing gently up to your assigned altitude and looking around- not much to see, really. Below you, the French landscape crawls by, and behind you, the C-130 lumbers along, it's four big turboprops dragging it through the air at it's agonizingly slow cruise speed.

Well, agonizingly slow to you, anyway.

It lumbers on toward RAF Wattisham as you line up on the barin runway, neglecting your usual pre-landing ritual of roundly cursing the assholes that built the runway here as your wheels kiss pavement. Checking the striker racks reveals that Ice and Rosalie are still en route, along with Maverick and Goose, though Slider and Katya are back- their strikers present in their racks. Wendy's back too- she must have pushed to arrive so early, though the twins aren't here yet.

“D-dibs on the showers!” Merlin squeals, practically jumping out of the cockpit and running inside ahead of you.

[x] Fine, I'll go find food. Mmmm, food.

You watch her go- she's thankfully still no where near confident to start stripping her gear as she's running, but you're relatively sure she'd be trying if she was.

You laugh, headed to the locker room yourself. Merlin's already been in and out, her gear laying strewn all over the floor of the room. You clean it up, hanging it in her locker and setting her helmet on top, and slowly get out of your own gear, changing into a clean flight suit hanging inside the locker and throwing the other in the laundry- noting that it's been done recently. You suspect Wendy's hand in that, though you can't prove it.

Heading down to the kitchen, you run into Katya and Slider- both sitting at the table, leftovers out in front of them- looks like roast beef, potatos, and some mixed side dishes. Katya's cutting a slice off a massive loaf of home made bread, while Slider prepares her own sandwich, slicing a tomato.

“Save some for me?” You ask, taking a seat next to Katya and reaching over for a plate.

“Plenty to go around.” Slider responds.

“Hey, I had a question.” You say, nodding your thanks at Katya as she passes you a pair of slices of bread and starts cutting another pair off for herself. “I was talking to Ice right before we left and she said something about a trick witches could do for people they had a connection with, then suggested we ask you to do it for me after the next hop.”

>>
>>32408912
Nah, the big 4 work because they're already on good mutual terms. Katya and Konstantina witnessed true love together, Ice and Katya had their 'Our pilot' bonding already, and Ice and Slider are as close as you get without being hard gay.

Slider and Konstantina might be wary of each other, but they'll bond pretty quickly cohabiting Frank's dick.

The rest would be too distant to make work in practice.
>>
“She... what?” Slider asks, almost blushing. “She... wow. No, and I need to talk with her. But I might not even be in shape to do it anyway.”

“It depends.” Katya says, from next to you, “On which of us you wish to have as your next opponent.”

“What about Zucchini?” You ask.

Slider shrugs. “They'll want a rematch, but they'll need to be worked in later. I imagine she got the ass chewing of the century over that. Blowing a striker like that takes doing, and it's not going to make the matrons happy.”

“i can see why not.” You respond.

“So which of us will it be, Frank Bishop?” Katya asks, one hand on her hip. “We must know which of us you will fly against tomorrow.”

You strongly consider flipping a coin or having them pick- after all, you're not big on playing favorites. At the same time though, you know you'll be flying against both of them eventually- tomorrow and day after, really, so it doesn't really matter.

“Well, Katya, been a while since we danced.” You say, looking over at her. “How about it?”

She nods. “Excellent. I will inform the operations desk.”

You nod, taking the plate of sliced tomatos from Slider and putting a couple on your sandwich. “Should be fun.”

Katya grins, showing her teeth. “Fun. Yes, I believe it will be.”

You snort. “Don't start talking trash now, you'll just be more humble later over it.”

She laughs. “Is that so, Frank Bishop? Perhaps you are the one who should be careful. I know how you fly.”

You shrug. If she wants to think that, you're going to let her. The surprise will work to your advantage.

When the 23rd Tactical Strike Witch Wing relieved Holly's as planned, their CO was completely distraught. She had wanted to turn back immediately and assist Elemdorf, but knew that there were witches waiting for her wing to take their place. She had forced Holly to promise that she would kill "every stinking Red between Tanana and Elemdorf" before the 3rd Wing began their return flight.

Few spoke during the flight home, keeping the radio channels clear for any news from the airbase, good or bad. Holly's Mudhens were at the front of the pack, a spearhead made of 37 very angry witches. If any were exhausted from the fighting earlier, nobody showed it. The witches of the 23rd had had the foresight to bring more replenishing juice packs, which certainly helped. It didn't compare to a nice nap, but it would be more than enough to ensure that if the Reds wanted Elemdorf, it would not come cheaply.

The jamming of the airwaves only seemed to intensify the further south they flew. Holly likened it to a form of psychological torture. Only snippets of communication leaked through the static, which only amplified the confusion. At the same time, the garbled transmissions gave listeners a sense of hope that not everything had gone to hell. ARKHAM was still providing regular updates to the witches' MFDs and the wing had an AWACS witch in its ranks—but beyond that, there was no way for anyone to fully grasp the situation.

Holly's jaw hurt from being clenched so tightly; her knuckles burned from being balled into fists as she led her remaining witches back to Elemdorf at mach 2. Even her shoulder, attended to by a healwitch for a few short seconds, seemed to ache more than before. She tried to hide her anger, buried her fears as deep as she could. She couldn't let the rest of the squadron see her as anything but their commander right now.

Earlier that same morning, if someone had bothered to ask, Holly would have said that she didn't hate the Russians. She didn't understand why they'd started the war, but it wasn't her job to understand why. She could even appreciate the tactical and strategic reasons to attack Elemdorf: USAF had been pounding the airfields taken by the Russians during the early stages of the invasion for the same purpose. It wasn't meant to be personal; it was war.

But it felt very personal when Elemdorf's final transmission was punctuated by explosions and static.

She wanted so badly to scream—to punch something. She didn't want to feel terrible for worrying so much about just one man when literally tens of thousands were in jeopardy. She wanted someone to tell her that she was panicking over nothing and that things were going to be okay.

"All we can do is fly as fast as we can," Chris said carefully. She tentatively reached out towards Holly, only to pull back at the last moment.

"I know." Holly's voice cracked. "I know."

She wanted to say more, but couldn't.

"It's a nice view, isn't it?" Chris gestured to Mount McKinley looming in the distance. The winds around the peak kicked up clouds of snow that raced down the mountain side, the sunlight reflecting off everything making for a breathtaking sight.

"Uh huh," Holly wiped her eyes. "Shoulda bought a camera."

"Wanted to climb that when we first got assigned here." Chris shook her head sadly. "War's made that a little difficult. Still wanna come back when it's all over."

"Mountain climbing implies hard work in the ice and snow," Holly said. "I'm freakin' done with Alaska."

"Well, I think I'd give it a couple years before I come back."

Holly found herself staring the mountain range, half hoping that, somehow, she would develop the ability to see through solid objects and find Elemdorf still standing.
>>
>>32409850
"They haven't been on the air for a long time now," Holly's voice trembled worse than before, and she looked at Chris with an almost desperate expression. "I'm kinda losing it here, aren't I?"

"For what it's worth, I think we all are." Chris motioned to Grenadine's witches to Holly's left. "We've done good today. We escorted SEAD in and they didn't take a single loss." She gave her commander a nudge with the butt of her M249.

"I know, I'm just—" Holly growled. "Look, we've got AWACS, the Navy's got a battle group out there looking for that flying carrier, and we get blindsided by a sub?"

"Those subs are supposed to be pretty quiet." Chris nodded. It was blind speculation on Holly's part, but it was something to keep her mind off of what was upsetting her. "Think maybe their flying carrier has something to do with it? Maybe the Navy's busy with that somehow."

"I-it'd explain why the Red steelwings fled Tanana to the southwest-" Holly stopped talking for a moment, eyes wide as thoughts began racing through her head. "Wait. The wing that relieved us at the front didn't report any contacts enroute to us."

"Holly, if fighters were attacking Elemdorf, ARKHAM would be trying to tell us about them, that's kinda important for anyone going back to support the base."

"Unless they can't." Holly said, her voice wavering.

"But we *have* been getting regular updates on our MFDs!"

"Look, we've just spent a week trying to hunt witches that have been playing in our sky, regularly evading detection from AWACS steelwings and witches!" Holly quickly worked the dials on the side of her headset. "ARKHAM, Siren 1-1! Has there been any reports of Soviet air assets headed towards Elemdorf, anything that disengaged and fled southwest from Tanana?"

Solid static was the only response.

"Gucci!" Holly almost shouted for the Wing's AWACS witch. "I need ARKHAM's position relative to us, right now!"

"Understood ma'am." Gucci climbed above the rest of the witches, her magic antennae glowing brightly as she powered up her striker's sensor packages. Holly began weaving back and forth in the sky, clearly growing more impatient. "Got 'em, 54 miles to the southeast—" The AWACS witch gasped. "Oh man... Colonel, ARKHAM's escorts just dropped out of contact. Limited contact on ARKHAM actual—"

"Upload a NAV coordinate to the wing's MFDs. We're going to support them!"

"Eagle, there's more," Gucci interrupted. "The refuelers in orbit to the west are under attack! Confirming contacts mixed among friendly IFFs. TEXACO 2 just dropped completely off my sensors. Not responding to IFF squawks!"

-

Elemdorf was a 'mere' 131 miles away from Mount McKinley. If they pushed it, they could be there in minutes. Personal feelings aside, Elemdorf was the lynchpin of the USAF presence over Alaska. The complete lack of information surrounding the battle over Elemdorf, if there was a battle, was enough to justify lighting the fire and getting over there ASAP. Tankers being lost were an inconvenience: there were still many airfields for steelwings and witches alike to rearm and refuel at. So was ARKHAM: another AWACS plane could be pushed up to fill in for its loss within hours. But losing Elemdorf would be a crippling blow to the entire USAF presence in Alaska and potentially affect the war effort for weeks or months.

But all that assumed Elemdorf was about to fall or had already fallen.

"Who else is close by to assist?" Holly asked quietly.

"The jamming's really bad, Colonel." Gucci shook her head. "I can tell you friendlies are en route to TEXACO's position but I can't confirm numbers. We're the closest to TEXACO and ARKHAM out of any local assets I can detect... but hell, I'm having trouble picking up IFFs as is. The few hostile contacts I have are fading in and out—"

"The data feed from ARKHAM *is* still active, right?"

"Barely, ma'am. It might as well not be." The jamming was bad enough that Gucci had flown closer to Holly to communicate verbally. She looked and sounded frightened. "Colonel, I have never seen anything like this—not even during training. I can't even tell you what we'd be flying into at this point. I'm all but blind here."

"What do you want us to do, Colonel?" Chris asked.

Holly did not answer, her lips moving silently, deliberating with herself that very question.

-

'Losing the AWACS isn't acceptable. US and Canadian steelwings and witches will not have access to valuable information while waiting for another E-3 Sentry to replace ARKHAM. AWACS witches like Gucci can't hope to provide the same coverage—they rely on being networked to a full AWACS aircraft as is.'

>'If ARKHAM is already gone, it doesn't matter what we do.'

'If TEXACO goes down, that'll limit the steelwings' ability to support ground forces on the front line. CAS and interceptors will not be able to loiter over friendly forces for as long without tankers. Witches don't carry enough firepower to make up for losing them.'

>'If TEXACO is already gone, it doesn't matter what we do. We're all at the limits of what we can do. Even with go juice. You're at half ammo yourself. What state do you think the rest of the squadron is in?'

'My girls are trained for this. We can go farther. We have to, it's not a choice.'

>'You're tired, Holly. Tired, hurt, and not thinking straight. The wing is effectively blind. If you split your squadrons now, you're limiting their overall combat effectiveness.'

'As far as I know, we might be the only forces close enough to ARKHAM or TEXACO to rescue them.'

>'Elemdorf has been under siege for the last hour.'

'...Goddamnit.'

"Mudhens and Angry Angels will proceed to ARKHAM's last known position." Holly said, silently surprised by how confident and calm she sounded. "Grenadine, I want you to take Manaburner, Magic Hats and the Golden Girls to TEXACO. There's likely dozens of steelwings running back to Elemdorf at bingo fuel. They need those tankers."

"We're with you, Eagle," Buzz Buzz replied. "Angels, form up around the Mudhens, we've got some weathermen to save!"

"You got it, Eagle." Grenadine nodded, flying off to rejoin her own squadron.

"Gucci, consider everything over Mount McKinley your sky and your sky alone. I need you to act as a relay between my element and Grenadine's." The AWACS witch looked ready to protest, but Holly cut her off by raising a finger. "I know the jamming's going to make that difficult, but you have to do what you can. The Ravens and Pitbulls are your escort, but I want the Ravens to be a quick reaction force in the event my element or Grenadine's need the reinforcements."

"Understood ma'am." Gucci nodded. "Long-range radio comms might not be an option, but I might be able to extend some data connection out to both elements. If I detect jamming aircraft or witches—"

"Send the Pitbulls after them, keep the Ravens on standby."

The Raven's CO did not look happy with her assignment. "Ma'am, you're centering two squadrons around our AWACS witch?"

"Until we determine ARKHAM's status," Holly explained patiently, "Gucci's the only long ranged radar asset at our disposal."

"MacLeod, Elemdorf is burning right now—"

"Elemdorf's a hundred and thirty plus miles away from us right now!" Holly glared sharply at the younger witch, snapping the argument in half. "We are NOT abandoning our base or the people there, we are supporting USAF assets because THAT is what we do!"

"But—" The witch seemed to shrivel under Holly's gaze. "Yes ma'am. I know what you're trying to do, I just—"
>>
>>32409980
"There is nothing I want more right now than to fly back to Elemdorf and wreck the bastards that are hitting our base, but Elemdorf might already be—" Holly took a shuddering breath. "Elemdorf might already be gone. We—we need a working AWACS to help us take it back if that's the case. We need those tankers for our steelwings. That's all there is to it. It's a shitty choice but I'm making it."

She spun around to look at the rest of her witches. She was furious that this was the best she could come up with. She was especially angry that she had—even for a moment—considered abandoning ARKHAM and TEXACO for very personal reasons.

She hoped someone had a better plan to suggest. She wanted a better plan. Anything had to be better than this.

But there were no objections, nods of approval all around. Even the Ravens' CO seemed to have come around.

"Alright then..." Holly said, her voice firm. "We know what we have to do. Let's get it done."

-

The taste of artificial grape from her final juice pack reminded Holly of Dimetapp, but she couldn't complain about the warmth and alertness. She needed every little bit of strength she could muster: she was sure of it.

As soon as they passed Mount McKinley, Holly saw the telltale signs of witch-fighter combat: contrails painting abstract routes through the sky and fading trails of smoke leading to fires on the ground. Small clouds of aluminum strips refracted sunlight as they fell from the sky, interspersed with the wisps of flares long-since burned out. Despite her enhanced vision, Holly found no sign of ARKHAM or its escorts. She only saw more signs of combat as her element flew on. No evidence of surviving friendlies—or their attackers.

"We're too late," Holly whispered. "Goddamnit."

Chris tapped her on the shoulder, pointing to her headset and shaking her head. "Comms are definitely out. Signal flare the others to close up the formation?"
>>
>>32410021
Checking her MFD, Holly frowned. According to it, Gucci was out of range/not found. Whatever was screwing with the airwaves was also preventing her from making a proper data link. The feed from ARKHAM was also gone.

'The jamming got worse in this direction. Maybe it's not as bad for Grenadine and the others.'

"...No flares for now. I've got a weird feeling."

Chris nodded, rocketing away to find witch pairs that had strayed farther from the main group.

"Eagle, check our 12 o'clock high," Buzz Buzz called, zooming closer to Holly and pointing to what she was concerned with. "Something glinted up there for a sec. You're the eyes in the team, surprised you didn't see it first."

"Got it, Little Bee." She could see... something. It only looked like a trio of black dots orbiting close together, much higher in the sky than witches typically flew. But no steelwing she knew of flew in such a tight circle.

"Well, Headwings?"

"I'm calling them witches, Bee." Holly looked around to make sure all of the Mudhens and Angels were close enough to hear her. "Let's assume we've been spotted, and that we're not alone—"

She was interrupted by a red warning light on her HUD goggles, followed by a message scrolling across the display:

WARN WARN WARN WARNWARNWARN BEADVISD H AVE LOCATD DISH-LIKE CONSTRUCT ON MT. MCKNLEY LOOK RECENT BDOGS DESTROYED TGTS DLNK RE-ESTAB ARKHAM NO LONGER YOUR VICNIT EST 5+ UNKNOWS 2 YOR POSIT EASTEASTEAST WARNWARN WA RN WARNWAR NWARN

Gucci's message kept repeating, and Holly could see it repeating on the HUD goggles of all the witches in her element. Whirling to the east, she could see oncoming shapes, none of them friendly.

"Stay in pairs, do not leave your wing witch!" Holly shouted. "Buzz, I know Lacey was evac'd at Tanana, you stay with me!"

The thirteen witches formed up in a loose 'wall', weapons up and ready to meet the Reds head on.

The shape of the five steelwings was familiar yet not. They were black from nose to tail, low enough to kick up snow in their wake—low enough for Holly to easily see the hated shape of Flanker-Cs... but different. The canards just behind the cockpit and the non-reflective canopy somehow made the already-intimidating airframe look even deadlier.

The wedge turned to the witches, accelerating. Ten black bodysuited witches dropped away from underneath the fighters, revealing themselves for the first time. . They corkscrewed towards the Americans like a perfectly choreographed swarm of missiles before splitting into two groups. Five witches to the left and right of the Flankers bore straight at Holly.

-

'They aren't firing,' Holly thought nervously. 'Why aren't they firing?' She squinted at the Flankers as they drew closer, and realized they didn't carry a single long-range missile their wing mounts. The glows from their afterburners intensified.

'Aphids? ...They want a knife fight!'

"HEADS UP, THESE AREN'T NORMAL PILOTS!" she cried out, just as a cloud of missiles streaked away from the Sukhois, too many for her to count—enough for at least ten Flankers, not five. Two of the Flankers rolled as they fired before climbing high; three went low. The Soviet witches bored straight in, hoping to catch the Americans in a pincer.

"BREAK BREAK BREAK!"

The USAF witches scattered in their assigned pairs, some firing wildly to intercept the missiles— but at this range, they had scant few seconds to react. Even with enhanced reflexes, they didn't have the speed to deal with so many incoming missiles. Few witches existed that did. None were in the 3rd Wing.

Holly threw herself at the Flankers going low and loaded a M203 shell, Chris to her right, Buzz Buzz close behind. She wanted the steelwings out of the fight as soon as possible.

Missiles came right on top of her, turning at impossible angles.
>>
>>32410139
Chris rolled over to face them, her '249 chattering away. "Holly, DIVE DIVE DIVE!"

Holly lost sight of the Flankers, her vision obscured by small arms fire peppering her magic barrier. The Soviet witches were in range. Rolling towards the deck, she put everything into her strikers, shifting her shield to the left. Holly detonated the barrier as the incoming fire slackened, pushing herself to the right. An Aphid dived through where she'd been, exploding in front of her a second later. She raised an arm in front of her eyes, spiralling through the debris and flame. Her teeth clenched up, pinpricks of pain coursing through her body.

'Push through, push—'

She pulled out of her crash dive with a thousand feet to spare, Chris and Buzz Buzz nowhere near. Missiles rained past her, failing to track her and slamming into the ground below. She spared a glance behind her and saw Chris climbing and rolling past missile trails, Buzz staying with her, trying to shield each other while taking the occasional shot at a witch or missile. She lost sight of them after a Flanker forced them to split up.

Six more Aphids snaked towards Holly, moving unlike any missile she'd ever seen.

Twisting around to face the incoming Aphids, Holly brought her rifle up and fired the M203, managing to catch two missiles with the grenade shot. The other four twisted after her, following her through her panicked roll as she dove lower... then cut her striker engines, kicking her legs forward. She screamed with agony, her body vigorously protesting the manuever. She lit the 'burners again, hoping the Aphids couldn't follow, clawing for more sky to work with.

They followed, too easily.

'Damn damn damn--'
>>
>>32410168
She cut the engines again before 'shoving' herself backwards with another magic burst, bringing her rifle up and firing as the missiles came into view. One Aphid flew off at a wild angle to a grazing hit. The M-16 ran dry as she caught a second missile right on the nose, taking the remaining two missiles with it.

"Fuck," Holly panted, re-lighting the strikers once more and slamming a fresh magazine into her '16, mentally counting the five she had left. Righting herself, she dove for the ground as low as she dared, hoping to stay unmolested for just a few seconds while she caught her breath.

She scanned around wildly for targets or her two wing witches. The sky was a mess of missile trails, tracers, and the occasional cluster of explosions. The battle was very much out of her control.

"Chris? Buzz?" she called out, feeling very shaken and alone. The radio only returned static.

She found a Flanker diving right at her, her shield catching 30mm shells with feet to spare. Bursting just out of the line of fire, she rolled onto her back to give herself a shot at the steelwing, 30mm tracers drilling into the ground behind her and kicking up gouts of snow and mud.

'Rifle up, aim, fire—'

Holly expected the fighter to try and avoid the shots. She hoped maybe she'd see smoke and flame trailing from the Sukhoi as it tried to disengage.

A magic barrier blocked her bullets.

"Wh-what?" Holly sputtered, reaching for her final M203 shell. The fighter kept coming, walking cannon rounds closer to her.

"...olly! Holly... witches guarding the..." Chris shouted over the radio, most of her message blocked by static.

The Flanker dropped neatly behind her, magic barrier flickering out and revealing a pair of witches flying just above it, adjusting their position almost perfectly in sync with the steelwing as it continued to chase Holly. The witches fired their rifles at Holly, keeping her on the defensive.
>>
>>32410220
Her legs begged for mercy as she looped back at the Flanker, hoping it couldn't follow. For a terrifying moment as she flew back towards the fighter, she watched the nose of the jet lift up, tracking her as she swept past it. The witches broke away from the Flanker to avoid slamming into its wings.

Righting herself behind the fighter with another burst of magic, Holly fired a three round burst from the '16. The Flanker's engine nozzles twisted in opposing angles, rolling the jet around the burst before it climbed away. A witch flew in to block a second burst of fire before her partner swept in from the right, passing in front of Holly before she could take a shot at her.

The second witch turned to face Holly, red eyes glowing as brightly as the magical antennae of a nightwitch. It was a face Holly would never forget. The Soviet kept pace with her, turning herself around to face the USAF witch while flying backwards.

Holly fired several bursts from her '16, the nightwitch blocking those that came close to hitting and dancing out of reach of everything else. She suddenly decelerated, Holly just barely bringing her shield up as the Soviet brandished her knife. The tip of the blade glowed brightly as it stabbed through the barrier. Cracks formed in the magic circle around the blade.

Holly growled with effort as she tried reinforcing the barrier. In the the distance, the Flanker and other witch could be seen engaging Chris and Buzz.

'Get 'em, girls.'

The Soviet pressed herself harder against the barrier, the glove of her free hand burning up against the strained magic circle. She smiled at Holly, teeth bared, steam puffing from her mouth.

"SHOWDOWN," she declared, her accented English taking on a crazed lilt. Her smile only grew wider as a point of light formed on Holly's side of the barrier, right in her face, growing rapidly brighter.

"Your call." Holly closed her eyes as tight as possible and detonated the barrier.

-
>>
>>32410255
'I am not ignoring my wing witches to fight a one-on-one duel,' Holly thought, blinking away the residual effects of the Soviet witch's 'strobe' ability. She'd been unable to forget the terror of being blind during the surprise attack a week ago, telling herself it would never be allowed to happen again.

'This is not a personal score being settled.' Holly fired the M203 at the Soviet as she tumbled away. It exploded harmlessly against a shield, but the nightwitch remained off balance, her AK's counter-fire wildly off target as she tried to right herself.

'If I can hold her attention, that's one less witch that Flanker has for defense.'

The nightwitch went ballistic into a full power climb in hopes of losing Holly in the chaotic furball. They weaved past and through other dogfights, taking occasional shots at each other if the opportunity presented itself. The Soviet slipped between a Flanker's stabilizers, sending it momentarily out of control. Holly flew just under the fighter, almost ramming into another surprised Russian witch. Desperation becoming apparent, the nightwitch doubled back on Holly, emptying a full magazine into her shield before she could roll or magic burst away. As she passed, Holly heard a dull *clank* against her barrier.

'Grenade!'

The blast shattered the barrier, but Holly managed to turn herself away from it just in time, only to see five strobe points flaring up right in her face. Eyes shut, she angled herself back towards the ground, bursting twice to slip just out of reach of more AK fire just as the strobes flashed.
>>
>>32410276
Holly reacquired the nightwitch at the edge of her vision, streaking towards the Flanker that Holly originally engaged at the edge of the battle. The nightwitch had dropped down to mere hundreds of feet off the ground, occasionally dropping lower, slicing between trees. Holly stayed higher, firing single shots to try keeping the Soviet honest. A glancing hit against her left striker unit caused it to spark violently, the nightwitch staggering in mid-air. It wasn't enough to slow her down. She rolled onto her back, crashing through treetops without hesitation, firing steady bursts at Holly before boosting away from the forest, a hollow boom marking her rapid climb skyward. Holly followed, spiralling around a belt full of grenades, bursting just ahead of their effective range.

The Russian was outclimbing her—barely.

The nightwitch was making her way back towards her Flanker and Holly could not stop her. It had been separated from its remaining witch escort, Buzz Buzz currently in its sights. She looked sluggish compared to the big fighter, freed from the weight of all the missiles it once carried. Its cannon spat several short bursts at the fleeing witch, coming closer with every attempt.

Chris was keeping the second escort witch busy, the two trying to fly circles around each other and unable to assist their allies.

"Buzz, I'm coming to you," Holly called out. "Hang in there!"

Her response was an agonized shout, reversing on the Flanker as tracers streaked past her. She dipped underneath the steelwing, emptying her USAS-12 into its belly. The results were immediate and catastrophic. What was left of the Sukhoi tumbled out of the sky.

"Got the bastard..." Buzz Buzz grunted, Holly rushing up to catch her before she let herself fall out of the sky.
>>
>>32410320
The nightwitch screamed, racing past Buzz Buzz to catch up to the falling bird. Holly watched as she pounded emphatically on the canopy, pulling herself away from the ruined fighter just seconds before it hit the ground.

She looked right up at Holly and Buzz Buzz, her red eyes glowing brighter, the crazed smile she greeted Holly with gone.

Things began to happen very fast.

-

Chris' voice broke over the squadron net, mostly garbled. But Holly sensed fear in her voice as she called for assistance. Holly frantically scanned the horizon, looking for Siren 1-2's ID tag to appear on her HUD goggles. She found her almost a mile away to the south, roughly a thousand feet off the ground, her shield flickering as she tried desperately to escape the witch pressuring her.

Holly didn't hear Buzz Buzz telling her to go help Chris; she was already on the move, knowing that the nightwitch was also on the move and much closer to her friend.

She saw Chris spin masterfully out of the way of what would have been a lethal spray of gunfire from her opponent's AK. Chris had spotted the incoming nightwitch as Holly shouted the warning. Chris fired a final burst from her M249, the box magazine running dry just as the first witch charged back in. Backpedaling with surprise and panic, Chris freed a spare box from her belt and fumbled it into place as she flew towards Holly as fast as she could.

Holly raised her rifle, unable to fire as the nightwitch barrelled into Chris from the side, the two women wrestling in mid-air as Holly drew closer.

And as she watched Chris fall limply away from the Soviet, her strikers depowered and blood soaking her coat, Holly never wanted to kill so badly.
>>
>>32410355
All tiredness left Holly MacLeod.

She forgot about how sore she felt, how long she'd been flying. She could feel her strikers heating up, sounding a mournful battle cry as she charged towards the enemy. In the back of her mind, she realized that the other witch was no longer in sight. Vaguely, she could hear Buzz Buzz shouting something over the radio, even wondering why her voice suddenly came in so clear.

The nightwitch answered the challenge, rushing to greet Holly with a bloody knife in one hand, AK in the other. Holly rolled and magic burst around incoming rounds, returning fire. As their rifles emptied, both women went for their sidearms. For the nightwitch, it was a Makarov: eight rounds fired rapidly and accurately, fragmenting against Holly's shield at head level. For Holly, her Colt Python barked six times. On the sixth shot, the nightwitch's shield shattered like a pane of glass, shards cutting across her face.

The Soviet reloaded first, firing as Holly ejected the empty casings from her revolver. She was already reloaded and firing again just as Holly tossed away her speedloader, holstered the pistol and magic bursted around the incoming fire.

Holly reached for the bayonet on her body harness, tearing the blade free. Her other hand wrapped around the barrel to her rifle's underslung M203, crushing it so she could affix the bayonet. The rifle warped and splintered in her hands as she raised it above her head.

The nightwitch inverted herself, bracing the still-bloody knife with both hands, driving it towards Holly's belly as they closed in—

—and was blasted away as Holly detonated her shield. She tumbled towards the ground, losing both her blade and AK.
>>
>>32410425
Holly reversed on the nightwitch, looping up and over, intent on bringing the bayonet through her spine. The nightwitch spun in mid-fall, knocking the the rifle aside and trying to strip it out of Holly's hands as she flew past, earning an elbow to the nose for her efforts. Flipping forward, Holly pointed her strikers towards the ground, her vision graying out as she rocketed back up towards the Soviet, bayonet first.

The nightwitch had regained full control, managing to slip away from another slash from Holly, following her up as she passed, pulling up alongside her.

Holly lunged at the Soviet with a feral shout, the bayonet cracking against a reformed barrier. Quickly flipping the '16 around, she swung the weapon like a bat through the nightwitch' shield and into her ribcage, just as she lashed out with one of her strikers and delivered a vicious kick to Holly's left arm. The rifle fell from Holly's hands as she howled in pain.

They hovered next to each other, the nightwitch grasping at her side and coughing up blood, Holly gritting her teeth and hoping her arm wasn't as broken as it felt.

They reached for their sidearms together, aiming for head shots as their barriers flared weakly to life.

Stalemate.

"Krev za krev, krov za krov," the nightwitch panted, blood from the cuts on her face flowing freely. There was no madness, no amusement to be found now. Pure exhaustion.

'Don't look at me like that. Don't you dare look at me like that.'

"That it?" Holly snarled, her mouth tasting of copper, her vision blurring as liquid heat streamed down her cheeks. "This how it's gonna be?"
>>
>>32410477
She couldn't have been more than sixteen. An athletic, compact girl more suited for the schoolyard or the stage. A week before, she'd been a specter that had almost taken Holly's life. Minutes before, she'd taken Chris. She was a witch killer, born and bred.

This was more than justified.

This was war.

Simple as that.

The nightwitch suddenly looked distracted, her eyes moving away from Holly. Russian voices came from her headset, tinny and muffled.

And then she dropped the Makarov, her shield vanishing as she slowly backed away from Holly.

"Over now," she said haltingly. She continued to pull back, shaking her head as Holly moved towards her. "Please. Over now."

'No. No you don't get to leave. Eight pounds on the trigger, that'll be all it takes-'

"H-Holly?"

"Chris?" Holly asked hopefully. "I saw you. I saw you fa-" Her voice gave out then and there, the Colt wavering off target.

A point of light suddenly flashed in Holly's face, blinding her as she pulled the trigger.

-
>>
>>32410498
When Holly's vision cleared, the nightwitch was nowhere in sight. She did not know how long she had been hovering in place with her weapon still drawn, but she did know that she was still breathing. The sky was no longer filled with the sounds of combat, fading contrails the only evidence that men and women had been fighting for their lives minutes before.

Shakily, she placed the Colt back in its holster, prying her clammy hand away from the grip.

"Chris?" she whispered.

"She's fine, Holly. Lucky as all hell," Buzz Buzz said, her voice hoarse. "I've got 'er stabilized, she's flying under own power."

"She promised me it's not gonna scar..." Chris yawned over the radio, sounding delirious off painkillers.

"Did she now?" Holly sniffled, grimacing as she tested her left arm. Not broken, despite feeling like it.

"Uh-huh. Haaaay, I heard-"

"Jesus Christ, MacLeod, what about you?" Buzz cut McPherson off. "You have any idea what I just watched you do?"

"I w-was there for it." Holly shook her head. "How'd we do?"

"Lots of wounded, no KIAs. We only managed to get one of the Flankers. They all started to disengage not long before you let that witch go."

"I let her go?"

"Scared the piss outta her I bet!" Buzz hooted. "Crazy knife-wielding bitch; she's lucky you didn't turn her head into a canoe!"

"COLONEL!" Gucci shouted over the radio. "The Russians are pulling out of your area. Can you hear me?! Please respond! After we took out those dish-structures—"

"I hear you, Gucci." Holly's sighed. "I definitely hear you."
>>
>>32410534
"Colonel, I can't find ARKHAM or their escorts anywhere."

"They're gone." Holly said bitterly, wiping at her face. "Gone before we ever got here."

"O-oh..."

"How's TEXACO?"

"Colonel Rogers reports that the enemy has been driven off. Half the tankers are down."

Holly's head bowed towards the ground. She failed to suppress a sob.

'At least we tried to make a difference.'

"Elemdorf?" she asked.

"Still silent, ma'am. We're coming to you now—"

"Negative, get to Elemdorf as fast as you can."

"But—"

"AS FAST AS YOU CAN!" Holly shouted. "RELAY THAT TO GRENADINE'S ELEMENT, YOU UNDERSTAND ME?"

"Yes ma'am!"

Tiredly, she pulled a flare gun from her harness and shot it into the sky, signalling her element to gather on her position. As badly as she wanted to run to Elemdorf right away, she wanted to make certain that her witches could still make the flight.

And she wanted to confirm with her own eyes that they really were all still alive.

-

Holly's element would be the first witches from the 3rd Wing to make it home.

They flew almost purely on adrenaline at this point. Chris had to be carried by Buzz Buzz, her strikers being taken by witches who were in decent enough shape to accept the additional weight. She'd tried to plead that she was good to fly, but her blood-soaked jacket said otherwise.

It was impossible for Holly to look at her friend in that state and not feel like the worst commanding officer in the entire United States Air Force.

The approach to Elemdorf made Holly feel sick at heart. Parts of Anchorage were clearly on fire, dark plumes of smoke rose from from the air base itself. One of the runways had been reduced to a chain of massive craters. The main ATC tower was gone, only a portion of the control center lying on its side remaining. The American flag fluttered sadly in the wind from a bent mast, partially burnt and frayed at the edges.
>>
>>32410620
To the west, a fading mushroom cloud climbing high above the mist obscuring massive swaths of the horizon.

"Jesus Christ," one of the witches blurted over the radio. Nobody bothered to correct her over radio discipline.

She counted more buildings damaged than not, but there were still open runways. She could see steelwings taxiing off them towards surviving hardened bunkers. Somehow, despite all the damage, Elemdorf was still open and accepting incoming traffic.

"Elemdorf ATC, Siren 1-1," she said, trying to keep her voice level. "I've got an emergency in the air, one witch, critically wounded... I-is anyone out there?"

"Welcome home Siren flight. Been a little busy, as you can see. We missed you back here." Somehow, despite everything, the controller at the back-up command center managed to sound jovial. It made the pain of seeing her airbase in shambles hurt just a little less.

"We missed being here," she managed to choke back.

"Set down where you can, ma'am, shoot up a flare if you need it. We'll have medical personnel out to you as soon as possible."

The base was almost unrecognizable from above, but she knew where her wing's hangar was and wanted to set down as close to it as possible. Only, she couldn't find it. The longer she looked for it, the more panicked she became. She thought she was going crazy, maybe taken a hit to the head. Perhaps she was confused. Perhaps it was all the smoke in the air, making it hard to see anything.

FASTER, TOVARISHCH
>>
>>32410665
It was only after the third time she looked directly at the skeleton of a burnt out hangar, a crater dominating its center, that she realized that this wreck had been her wing's hangar.

"Is that our..." Chris started to ask.

"Can't be," Holly shook her head. "Not after all that, not today. No. No no no no no no."

"Holly, stay here." Chris pleaded, squirming in Buzz Buzz' arms, trying to reach out to Holly. "Don't go down there. Don't do this to yourself."

Holly dropping towards the hangar like a stone, ejecting out of the strikers just before landing, sprinting forward the moment her feet touched the ground.

Chris screamed for her to stop.

Holly kept running.

Done.

Wow that was intense well done sir!
>>
>>32410755
Don't think he's dead. There will be misunderstandings and forced tackle hugs later.
>>
>>32410755
He's alive, canon says so. When Frank met Holly again to get his brand new army sweater, she seemed fine and not an emotional wreck.

Could have been that she's had time to come to grips with it. I mean, we're months after Alaska now

Well Chris talks about him in PJ Witches Ghost. SO THERE.
>>
An Idea just came to me which I did not believe Slider had ever tried yet.

Taking all the underwear in the Air Force witches barracks before a major practice formation or something and replace them with white panties with big bold captions on the rear saying "PROPERTY OF THE U.S. NAVY!"
>>
>>32410902
Because something that big is liable for collateral damages. Air Force generals do not have a sense of humor about such things, and I doubt the witches would either.

Well considering the situation you gave him, I don't think he'll mind that type of demise.

Though if he survives I imagine Holly will plan to do so.

Will we have Ice and Slider talk about Ice blurting out that Frank should ask Slider for power up?

Also my SWQ is a little rusty what did the connection do again and how was it done besides Young banging the widow?
>>
>>32411337
Young really believed that witches were hallucinations and were all parts of his subconcious, it's my fav scene.
>>
>>32411269
Thanks man, you are awesome. Next part ready when? Cliffhanger is pain.
>>
>>32411374
I remember that, I love that scene but I get a bit depressed that we didn't end up with Trude.

But how did the power up go again for gnomes and witches?
>>
>>32411337
It was/is a recharge (physical/mental/magical) essentially. IIRC it was a pretty simple thing where Minna just touched Young's temples and magi-zapped him. The thing is that the power of the spell totally depends on having a close connection with the target (romantic or otherwise, but it stands to reason that romantic interest would be the "closest" connection). Out of the original SWQ bunch, only Minna and Trude fit the criteria of both knowing how and being emotionally attached IIRC

The whole thing was not sexual, but implied to be emotionally intimate? At least for the witch...Young was passed out

More Ice and Slider fleethy
>>
>>32411406
No, only Minna and Mio had the training. Mio couldn't do it for obvious reasons.
>>
>>32411337
Maybe we will see something. Dunno.

>>32411386
I'm hoping to have the ending written in the next couple weeks.
>>
>>32411421
Huh...I thought Trude knew as well?
>>
>>32411424
Make it happen fleethy.

Because it'll lead to them both doing it at the same time.
>>
>>32411406
Emotionally intimate, so what do they read memories or something?
>>
>>32411424
I hope so, maybe getting details on why is it so intimate that it will be fun
