You are Anthony Grant, the level 31 cleric named Ambrosis, and you can't help but think that Lilac's proclamation of miracles would have been more impactful if it wasn't for the distracting “Mwah mwah mwah!” coming from the two in the middle of the room.

You pull the magnet from your armor. “So, where'd you find a magnet?” You ask Lilac.

“I made it.” She responds.

“How?”

She moves her staff back and forth in front of you.

“Oh.” You respond. “Magic.”

She gives you a single nod.

You fold your arms and think for a moment. A lightning powered vehicle against a fire powered vehicle. Well, everyone knows fire is better than lightning, that's just fantasy standard. Obviously your steam engine will win, you just need to complete it. You look over the mess in her shop. She already has a frame for her car, and it looks almost complete, but no tires. You think she might be ahead of you, but not by much.

You turn around with a “I need to get back to work.” You head for the door and Judi follows you out.

The two of you walk the streets until you stop suddenly.

You begin to think. If you go to sleep now you'll be well rested for one overhaul of a day tomorrow, not working till the race starts. Or! You could go back to work right now and not stop till the race getting you even more time, but what if you make mistakes from being so tired? You won't be driving so it doesn't matter if you are passing out the day of the race.

When has our madness ever led us wrong? Making ourselves crazier with sleep deprivation sounds great.

I think the focus should be on the engine and transmission rather than the gun or the armor. We can do those later, when we're up against major enemies and have a bit more time.

For now, we gotta win the race and we can do that with relatively light armor and a ballista.

You decide. One last day of sleep, that's what you'll get. Then begins the mad dash to completion, the same technique you used on all your finals. It never failed you before, it certainly won't now.

“Something wrong?” Judi asks.

“No,” You respond, “We should get some sleep.” You pause, “Or I should get some sleep. You need to get back to a normal sleep schedule.”

“But... people are awake during the day.”

You stare at her for a while.

Judi looks down at her feet.

“Do I need to do the no one cares speech again?” You ask.

“No...” She murmurs.

“Good. Now stay awake all day and get to sleep when the sun is down, that way on the day of the race you'll be wide awake.”

She continues to look down at her feet.

You try to think of something. “By the end of this, you'll be the biggest star in the city. People will say, 'Oh shit, is that Judicature, greatest racer in the west?' and I'll say, 'Yeah it is, now get in line because there are, like, a million other people here to see her.”

Judi laughs at your strange tale.

“Oh, you laugh now, but just wait till after the race! You'll have twenty friend requests a minute after the race. I bet you.”

She smiles and looks to you, “How much you bet?”

“Hundred gold.” You pantomime slamming some cash onto a table, “Bam! On the table! That's my bet!” You point to the non-money. “So when you lose, you better pay up!” You start walking backwards towards the inn, nodding to her as you do.

She seems to have been cheered up by your strange display, up until someone pokes their head out of a door to see what the commotion is.

The person does not look entertained by your antics.

The duelist scurries off in response.

You feel a distinct urge to slap the man, but you decide some sleep is a better option.

You dream of strange men. Strange men with heads of steam.

They push you and you go tumbling down.

Over and over again they push you and you fall to standing.

You shout in fury and the steam-heads dissipate.

Now you are alone and you cannot move.

Try as you might, your legs do not move. You are trapped in the darkness of this new hellish world.

Then two new steam-heads appear. One pushes you forward, the other pushes you back.

Back and forth you bounce between the two.

Then you hear a ringing.

Red lights.

“Battle stations!” You shout.

All the crew on the ship scramble for their positions.

“Fuck the police!” You shout as the missiles are fired upon the enemy vehicle.

The missiles slam into the enemy land-ship.

The crew cheers, but you hear an ominous clapping behind you.

You turn to see a man with no face, save a smile.

He continues to clap. “Goob job” He says, “But can you beat this?”

He hands you a hat made of brushstrokes and white cubes, but not any hat; no, this hat is the universal symbol of destruction. He has you. Checkmate.

The ringing continues.

“Golb.” He says. Then your land-ship goes up in smoke.

You jump in your bed, now awake.

The ringing of your phone continues.

You ignore the call. It rings, and rings, and rings. Then it stops. Then it rings again, and again, and again.

You put a pillow over your head, but the ringing is coming from inside your head.

It continues for what feels like an eternity before it finally ends. You lift the pillow to see that it is dark outside. God damn is he persistent. You're too awake now to go back to sleep, so you get out of bed, get dressed, and head down stairs.

You wave to Tabula and the two of you head out into the streets and to his workshop.

“We're not sleeping till the race starts.” You say. “We gotta get this thing done ASAP.”

Tabula nods. “So, what are we doing now?”

“We're getting this thing to move.”

The two of you get to work building a receptacle for the coal to sit under the bucket. You make copies of the wheel contraption and hook them all up to the bucket. You then light some coals and wait.

“So, I had the craziest dream.” You say to the blacksmith.

“What was it about?” He asks.

“Uhh... steam-people and a hat? There was some guy, and he had a hat, and I knew it meant destruction, like the universal symbol of destruction, it wasn't really explained, I just knew it somehow. Anyways, he hands me the hat and my ship blows up. I was on a ship, by the way.”

“Think it means anything?”

“Probably not.”

The steam begins to pump out of the contraption and it slowly lurches forward, but all the wheels are firing at their own rate and soon the thing hobbles about and falls over.
>>
>>32402649
You stare at the machine and sigh. “The movement isn't smooth enough. It won't work like this.” You look up and give the finger to whatever god has cursed you. Probably the god of the forge, the smug bastard. “Fuck that guy.” You mumble to yourself.

You start to think over what could be done.

A crankshaft? Yeah, that might work. The entire thing will move together if there is just one source of power. But then how are you going to get it to work as a tank!?

You continue to stare up at the sky. Cars do this shit. How the hell do cars to this shit!?

What if we had two steam engines, one for each set of wheels?
>>
>>32402824
You have a moving valve that directs steam to one side of the piston per stroke, then the other side.
>>
>>32402874
That is ingenious. Imagine if all steam engines were like that. Double the output.
>>
>>32402869
That sounds stupid, anon. So stupid, it might just work.
>>
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/4298-auto-transmission-video.htm

So this MIGHT help.
>>
>>32402824
Currently?

The steam builds up, is pushed through a lever valve, then pushes a piston forward. The piston the pushes the wheel forward and at the same time closes the lever valve. The piston is then put back in place under the inertia of being pushed out and opens the valve again just before getting back to the original position.
>>
>>32402869
One for the front and one for the back? So it is basically 4 wheel drive?
>>
>>32402901
They'd have to work in concert, though, so we might have to develop a control scheme that would automate an equal amount of power from both when we need it and differential power when we don't.
>>
>>32402677
[ ] Other

Set it up so that you have two boilers, one on each side of the car (each boiler serves 2 wheels). Set up a valve that lets a pilot control how much steam is going to each side of the car. They can regulate output.
>>

on an endurance race it'll cause problems. the amount of water in the boiler and temp of the fire would require constant adjustment.
by the way, this thing is going to need a lot and coal(or other flammable) and water. On steam trains, the entire first car was often dedicated to holding coal, and water was either gotten in town or (in more sparse areas) water towers.

Like a bolt of lightning you suddenly understand. Steam pushing the piston in one direction is the problem for all of this! And the gears!

It's like your brain is on fire, but in a good way! Brain-fire! Steam-men!

“OF COURSE!” You shout, “FUCKIN' STEAM-MEN!”

Tabula gives you a strange look.

“No! Really, okay. So, the steam pushes the piston out, right? Well, if we just have a way of encasing the piston, right? And have it so it pumps steam into one end, then pumps it into the other while draining the first one, right? Well, that means the steam is pushing at all times! Smooth energy! That fuckin' simple! And we, like, four of those fuckers, all turning the wheels! No! It turns gears! Those gears? We make them so we can move them around. Changing which gear ratio is turning each side. That will change their speed without changing the power output! It's brilliant!”

Tabula gives a second's thought and asks, “So, you want to control the tanks through just gearshifting each of the sides?”

“Yes!” You say, “Wait. Are you saying you know how a gearshift works?”

“Only the basics.” He responds.

You want to yell something, but you don't even know what to yell, so you just shake your head and shout, “Let's get to work!”

You look at your strange contraption and quickly realize you're going to need to make the entire thing all over again, except for maybe the bucket.

You and Tabula get to work. Metal bars, metal pipes, metal boxes. Pistons, slide valves, wheels.

The prototype of the engine is done. You pack the coals in, light them, and wait.

The wheel turns, and turns, and turns, and turns. It continues to spin, not giving up an ounce of speed. In fact, it looks like the thing is speeding up.

You fall to your knees and point to the sky. You and the forge god. Best friends for life now. Fuck yeah.

After a couple of minutes of watching the wheel just spin, bathing in the sense of accomplishment, you look to the empty space where there should be a giant steam tank, and say, “Soon.”

Maybe we could sell the Big Red One to the cowboys in iforgetthename 51 for an insane amount of money and then use that money to pay our Summoner friend what we owe him and build a better tank.

“We're gonna make it big!” You shout, “Big as fuck! We're gonna make a god damn ship! Except on the land! A land-ship!”

“How big are we talking?” Tabula asks.

“Like, give us bedrooms on this thing! Make this thing into the enterprise of land-ships!”

“That's a tall order.” He responds.

“I believe in you.”

“I believe in me too, but that doesn't mean I can build it in a day.”

“Then build it as big as you can! Big ass engine in the middle, bridge up front, bedrooms in the back! Later we can add some cannons to it! Steam cannons!”

Tabula shrugs, “I'll try, but you need to get to work on that gearshift.”

The two of you get back to work building what will soon be The Big Red One. The frame is build slowly but surely. You can imagine it now. Wooden floors: Very tasteful. Fancy wood doors: Classy. Dark and dreary boiler room: A classic. A wide open deck: A must. A tiny little bedroom in the back: The fuck? A tiny little room at the front for Judi: What the hell?

“What the hell!?” You shout.

“What?” Asks Tabula.

“What's with the tiny rooms!?”

“If I made them any bigger, things would be too heavy.”

“But how am I supposed to walk around like a ship captain now!? There's supposed to be a huge bridge! With computers! And missiles!”

“Like in Star Trek?”

“Exactly!”

“That's not going to happen.”

You sigh and look out the window. It's still dark out? Wait, no. The sun just went down.

“Help me get this boiler in place.” Tabula says.

You look at the giant metal cylinder. It shimmered a deep red reflection of everything. “That's not iron.” You say.

“It's not.” Tabula responds, “It's dragon metal. Stats-wise, it's got decent defense and fire resistance.”

“So, what does that mean?”

“If my guess is right? Fire resistance means it's insulated. Extra defense probably means it can stand up to some heavy pressures.”

It certainly made sense to you, so you just went along with it.

After some more tinkering, the frame and gears are now done. Everything lies exposed and untested.

“Let's give this thing a test drive.”

Tabula adjusts his glasses, “It's the only way.”

You both climb aboard. You head for the drivers seat, Tabula walks around to the front of the machine.

He summons forth a water sprite. The watery woman pours gallons and gallons of water into the boiler before being dismissed.

“We ready?” You ask.

“We're ready to go. Just need some heat.”

He heads down the stairs, into the boiler room, where you can't see him.

You rub your hands together and move the gearshifts; one to reverse, the other to first gear. Then you play the waiting game.

Over time you can hear the steam traveling through the tubes, pressing on the metal cauldron. Then you hear the hiss of steam and the machine suddenly jerks to the right. Then again. Now you are facing the door and you can't help but put both sides into first gear.

There is a big grin on your face as the machine begins to move with a smooth pace, heading out the now bigger door with a crash.

“What was that!?” Tabula cries out.

“Nothing!” You shout back, “Just give us some more power!”

The machine begins to get a good pace as you head down the main street, crushing fruit stands in the way.

The people look up to your metal behemoth with mouths agape and looks of terror on their faces. You pass by a bunch of were-cats with a bike. The fools, they can never match the power of The Big Red One.

You drive this monster all the way out of town, and that is when you switch gears, increasing speed. The majesty of the mechanical creature! Faster and faster it runs!

“More power!” You shout. The speed is obscene! You leave clouds of dust in your wake. You are rulers of this mountainous world! The highway is your kingdom, and none shall question your rules!
>>
>>32406883
Then the titan starts to slow down, and down, and down.

You are stopped.

“What's going on!?” You yell.

Tabula gets back on deck. “We're out of water.” He responds.

You lie back in the chair, “But things were just getting good.”

He summons up another water sprite. “We should get back and finish this thing off.”

“But we have so much time left!”

He points to the horizon. The sun slowly peaks its body above the line.

“Fuck.” Is all you have to say on the subject.

The two of you painstakingly get back to the workshop with the newly-expanded doors.

“Why is there a huge hole in my walls?” Tabula asks.

“It was a sacrifice we needed to make.” You respond.

Tabula does not look too pleased by your joke.

“I'll just...” You try to think of something.

Not to start waifu shit, but it might be a good idea to hedge our bets with the race thing.

Form an informal alliance. We agree to help each other out against the other racers but we each compete to win.

If Lilac wins, our party gets 33k, if we win we get 67k - wall repair funds. Either way, it helps our chances of winning and getting paid.

The TLDR of it is she just has to get it to spin. Do you have any idea how simple is is to do that? The very first steam powered invention from ancient Greece could power that shit.

You had to make a complicated engine. She just spins shit to generate electricity, adds some wires and she has a supermagnet. The design is much simpler here.

She just has the mage. Two mages, tops. And I doubt she'll have enough mana potions.

“I'll just get back to work.” You say, “I'll pay you back once we get the prize money. Hell, by that time we'll be able to just sell steam tanks to people. You'll be rich, even if we don't win!”

He still looks disappointed in your actions.

“Back to work!” You say with an awkward smile.

The two of you get to covering up the exposed gears and pipes with nice, thin coverings of metal and wood. “That's some classy shit right there,” you say to yourself.

That's when you hear the sound of whirring gears. You turn around to see Lilac driving around the workshop in some kind of tiny car. She looks like a child in a chrome colored power wheels car or something.

“What are you doing?” You ask her.

“I thought I would cruise around to pick up some fly honeys.” She responds.

You stare at her.

“I thought it was funny.” She says with an awkward smile.

“And you thought I would just ignore you trying to steal our design secrets?”

She looks a bit insulted, “It's a few hours before the race, I couldn't steal your design even if I wanted to!”

You look back to Tabula, then to Lilac, “A few hours!?”

“Right.” She responds.

You begin to panic, “Is it ready!? Are we ready!? How much more do we need!?”

“We're still missing some panels.” Tabula responds.

You scramble back up the land-ship.

“Need some help?” Lilac asks.

So are bombs with explosions the size of a building capable of one shotting a lv 99 and those exist. it's all about exploiting loopholes there. They aren't "using" the engines. they're just chucking lightning at them.
Plus taking your hypothesis into consideration the conbustion engines the people in Japan are going to make should be too high level for anyone to bother using. Guns just have an equip requirement while the engines aren't gear so you aren't going to run into that.

Okay, it's boring. Okay, we all want steam cannons. I especially want steam cannons.

But I don't think we can make a steam cannon in transit. We might be able to make a ballista in transit.

PCs are stronger than anything we could make on such short notice since we aren't nearly rich enough to afford carpet bombing an area with enough alchemist fire potions to crash a supercomputer pre databasing.

“Sure!” You shout, “Help us cover up everything!”

She climbs up the ladder on the side, and reaches above deck. “This is amazing!” She says, “It's like some kind of-”

“Land-ship?” You answer for her, “Yeah, it is! Now less talking, more building!” You push her below deck to the boiler room. “All the pipes are exposed! Help me fix it!” You hand her a stack of metal sheets and the two of you get to work filling in all the empty sections.

“You're not going to cheat or anything, are you?” You ask.

“No, if I cheat, the race means nothing.” She responds.

“Why is this thing so important to you?”

“What thing?”

“This race, you being an engineer, all that stuff.”

She remains silent as she continues to place the panels.

“Lilac?” You ask.

“It's not important.” She responds. She looks a bit saddened by the conversation, “We're done here, right?”

“Yeah.” You respond.

She gets up and leaves.

You sigh. The hell was that about.

You head back above deck only to see Lilac driving away in her tiny car. You shout to Tabula, “Your side of the ship done!?”

“Yup! Your side done!?”

“Damn straight it is!”

“We gotta go get your driver, then!”

“We'll also need to get this thing to the start of the race!”

Tabula pops his head out of a floorboard. You both nod to each other with a smile of hell-yeah-mother-fucker.
>>
>>32409505
You jump into the driver seat and Tabula heads down into the boiler room.

You drive the Big Red One into town. Now that everyone is awake, everyone knows to fear your greatness. You roll the BRO over to the inn and let loose its steam to stop. You cross your arms, and stand in smug satisfaction at all the gawking masses.

You open the door to the deck and stride out. You open up your friends list and call Judicature.

RING

RING

RING

“H... hello?” She asks.

“Look outside.” You command.

“Is that-”

“Yes.”

“And I-”

“Yes!”

“So we're-”

“YES!” You shout, “Now get out here!”

That is when you hear a familiar voice behind you. “Yarr! This be a mighty ship!”

You turn around to see Trove and Takeshi.

“The samurai code says bigger IS better.” Takeshi says with a solemn nod.

“Yarr! We should be apart of the crew!”

That's when you see a woman you have never seen before get on board the ship. With her white dress and green corset, she looks like the stereotypical tavern wench. You look over to Trove, then back to the woman.

“Who are you!?”

“It's okay!” You hear the voice of Canis moments before he jumps onto the deck. “She's with me!”

“Are you all trying to come with me?” You ask, “Because there's only one bedroom, and it's tiny.”

“Yarr! It be time for an adventure! Who cares about sleepin'?”

Everyone cheers.

You notice the name Judicature floating just above the deck. She pops her head up, spots everyone on board, and then ducks back down. You, unfortunately, do not have time for this. You walk over to the ladder and pick Judi up by her chainmail and toss her onto the deck.

“Our prized pilot!” You shout.

Judi's face goes red.

You point to the small room containing the driver's chair. “That's the... cockpit? Driver's seat? That thing.”

The duelist goes rushing into the room and slams the door behind her.

You look back to the group which has gone silent. “1st Panzer Division!” You shout.

“1st Panzer Division!” They shout back.

Okay, but only because it's funny.

>Which of his pretty pretty dresses is our brother wearing right now.
The frilly pink dress.

The mighty thong of Korean Might.

Normal fighting pants covered in mud from a freshly dug grave and the blood of an innocent Lander.
>>
>>32410568
That's easy to find out, just put a sword through her gut and wait 5 minutes. If she comes back super pissed off then she wasn't a lander!

She breaks anything and she has an angry horde with a steam engine tank able to chase her anywhere since ET for some reason doesn't let you take yourself off their friend list or refuse to be on one to begin with and a bonus of that includes being able to track people's area. She's right fucked unless she ditches the server constantly which is why im going with she did nothing.
>>
>>32410639
This.

Lilac knows that if she fucks up the steam tank she's pissed off our entire party and we'll never speak to her again.

All she'll be left with is that dwarfmobile.
>>
>>32410664
>implying the dwarfmobile isn't more important to her
>>
>>32410683
The dwarfmobile is shit and she knows it.

I'd bet real money we find her out during the race asking for help.
>>
>>32410703
If you want to just give away money, sure.
>>

I'm going to take a guess in the other direction and say that she'll likely be knocked out of commission by Coyote close to the finish line and our moral choice is to either save her and lose or leave her and win.
>>
>>32411255
First of all: it's Lilac who wants to win real bad.

Second, I plan on recruiting Coyote during the trip, so...

They can't even domesticate brier weasels and you think we're going to befriend a berserk pseudo-deity that tears out hearts for fun?
>>
>>32411349
There's lore reasons for why Coyote does what he/she does and I think we can diplomance he/her.

We might need Lilac's help to do it.

Part of me still wants to write about what's happening in Big Apple, but I fear how people might react to that.

Maybe I'll write up a side story and post it to pastebin towards the end of each thread,

Maybe I'll just spring a bonus thread on people randomly.

Maybe I'll just leave it a mystery forever.

Thank you, tiny mite. For still being here so long after the thread, you are allowed one extra question.

You or whoever impersonates you. There's no real way of telling.
>>

Alright.

What happens to players who are killed by Coyote?
>>
>>32412680
I should rephrase 'players' as 'Adventurers', I guess. Same thing.
>>
>>32412680
>What happens to players who are killed by Coyote?

Their souls are absorbed into the heart to feed the flames.

Their lost XP is used to slowly reconstruct the soul of the First Man.

They respawn at a cathedral.
