>Recap
Garland the Panther, is a Witcher sent to a small fishing town called Loredge to find and eliminate the cause of a number of strange disappearances that have occurred over the past two and a half months. He has found a number of clues that lead him to believe that a merchant ship called the Golden Barge may be involved, and perhaps even the town guardsmen. There is a strange whistling that occurs on an island out in the bay, making it a likely location for the creature. But first Garland wants to investigate the Golden Barge, so that he may get enough information on the creature to combat it.

Yay, best time of the day is here.

Let's get right to business shall we? We might be able to wrap up the mystery this time.

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to the tale of Garland the White Panther – though at this point in our tale he is simply named Garland. When last we left our silver haired hero he had rescued a young girl of raven hair and emerald eyes from a terrible fate starving to death as her ex-lover served a strange bewitching creature. At this point in his tale the Witcher did not know the importance this girl held for him, but her role in his tale will become apparent further into my story.

For now we must focus upon Loredge, and the Golden Barge – as you may remember this was the merchant vessel run by Hermenegildo Delgado that may or may not be involved in the disappearances. There was something simply not right with Hermenegildo and his barge, the convenience of the numbers simply didn’t add up, girls just happened to disappear when the barge was in port? Garland knew that no such coincidences existed. But still he didn’t know everything, and could prove nothing.

It was time for the Panther to show its claws, he would find the evidence, he would get to the bottom of this mystery! The question was… how?

>Stalk Hermenegildo
>Stake out the barge
>Investigate the sailors of the Golden Barge
>Wait for night fall, and sneak aboard the barge
>???

The Panther school were known for their stealthy tactics, and if ever there was a truer Panther than Garland, the history books do not tell of them. Garland would sneak aboard the merchant vessel himself and find any incriminating evidence, and then he would escape the barge without ever being seen – at this was his plan.

There were only a few hours left before night would fall, but he did not want to sneak aboard in early evening, he would sneak aboard at the darkest hour of the night. So to pass the time inconspicuously the Witcher decided to…

And now I have to waver eternally whenever I'm on /tg/'s front page, afraid to look into these threads. afraid you'll butcher the characters and world, but also always curious about what the hell you're doing in here. Because /tg/ (very rarely) gets shit done.

Perhaps the Witcher knew something instinctively important was to happen in his future involving the girl from the lighthouse, perhaps he was simply worried that his strongest lead might be taken from him, or maybe it was simple compassion – for whatever reason Garland decided it would be best to spend his spare hours watching over the girl named Elissa Frey.

Grauvas the Blacksmith was still there, guarding both Elissa and Ulbert – the boy who Garland had tied down to protect himself, the townspeople and the lad himself. The two of them sat together at the small table that was set up in the infirmary, passing the time with casual conversation and a few rounds of dice poker. This went on for a good three or four hours, before something strange and amazing happened in that small little room.

At around the time the clock struck eight, the young girl in the corner began to tremble. At first it was unnoticeable, and the two men continued to play their game and chat about the quality of weapons. But soon enough a tremble became a shake and a shake became close to a seizure. The sound of the bed rocking and shaking caused both men to snap their heads around suddenly and stand from their stools almost in unison.

“By my ancestors, what’s wrong with her?” Grauvas breathed, watching her limbs vibrate frantically as her eyes stared open wide at the ceiling. “Doctor! Doctor!” The man came running, but even before he had entered the room Garland had acted.

He moved to the girl’s side, attempting to hold her still so that she would not harm her already broken legs. The look on her face was terrifying, there was something strange in that emerald gaze, it transfixed him like the hypnosis of that strange whistling noise, as if the two were the same. The thought crossed his mind that she may even be the source, but his mind cast this away, they were similar feelings but not quite the same.

Funny you should mention Elves…

“The moon.” She called in a voice that was both piercing and dreaming “On the night of the red moon the blood of Witchers shall be spilled. The line of panthers shall end, and with them the second great collapse shall come.”

The doctor, who was nothing more than an Elven herbalist some of the townsfolk trusted with their sick and wounded, stared vacantly at the girl, apparently just as transfixed as Garland had been moments ago. In his hand he held extract from the Bloodflower, a milky substance in a glass vial. He had meant to use it to quell her seizure, but when she had begun to speak in that haunted tone he had frozen. “A prophecy…” he said in awe “the girl has the power…”

“Power or not, she’s apt to bite her tongue off at this rate!” growled the Dwarven smith, as he helped Garland keep her lower half still. “Give her the damn bloodmilk!” but the doctor simply gaped, looking to the Witcher for confirmation.

“Quell her,” he barked, ordering the Elf into action.

“Yes of course,” the Elven herbalist muttered, as if he had known this was the correct course of action all along, rushing to the girl’s side and administering the sedative while the two others held her down so she wouldn’t choke upon it.

The reaction was steady, but noticeable. Just as she had grown from a tremble to a full blown seizure, her shaking steadily began to cease as her body relaxed from the sedative. Rapid short breaths became longer and more even, until finally she was sleeping peacefully again. All three men in the room uttered a sigh of relief, as the Witcher and Dwarf settled back into their seats, and the Elf headed back out to his office to continue mixing herbs.

“What on earth…” cried the Dwarf, pushing the dice board to the side, clearly not in the mood. “What did you drag me into Garland?”

“I’m not sure, to think she has The Power, somebody will need to train her, I’m surprised nobody noticed it until now.” But even as he spoke, his mind was pondering the meaning of her prophecy. There were a number of things that concerned him, the most pressing he muttered to himself “the blood of Witchers will be spilled. The line of the panthers shall end…”

He was no expert in prophecy, nor in the Power for that matter, he would be able to find no answers on his own. He made sure to remember every detail of that night, for he knew one day it would be of great import. But for now he had work to do. Without a word he stood, and he saw that Grauvas knew it was time for them to part once more. But before they did, Garland would need to make a choice of his equipment.

Garland was nothing if not prepared, he would take with him everything at his disposal in case of any situation. He was skilled, but he was no Master Elldrick, he would not go into a dangerous situation armed only with his silver sword. He would wear his gray travelling cloak, his leather armour, and a mask to hide his identity – though he could do nothing about his gold coloured eyes. With him he would take every weapon at his disposal, a club for taking out enemies silently without killing them, his knife which was made of meteorite steel just as his steel sword was, and of course the two swords that marked him as a Witcher.

He felt a little overburdened, but was at least well prepared, after all he did not know what lurked upon the boat. With all that settled he left the apothecary’s in silence, under the cover of night and the protection of his cloak.

In the time that he had been inside waiting for night to fall, a light drizzle had begun to fall upon the town of Loredge. There was a chance for it to turn heavier, but for the moment it was nothing more than a spattering of water, lightly misting his upper face – the only part of him exposed at this point.

He came to the docks in no time, glad for the rain that caused most folk to stay indoors lest the spattering become a storm, as was so common during the early spring months. There were few men who lingered on the docks, and fewer still that looked sober. Still a man in a cloak and mask was sure to draw attention if spotted, he would have to creep by somehow.

Surveying the docks, Garland saw that even with the five or six men that still roamed the docks, getting from cover to cover without being seen would be a hassle he could not afford. Grumbling to himself about what must be done he slipped away from the alley he hid within, moving to the edge of the docks where he was least likely to be spotted and slipped into the cool water.

Spring had come and melted the snows, but the water was still cold with the chill of winter. It bit through the leather of his armour and clawed at him, turning his flesh to ice. But he was a Witcher, well trained and raised, he barely showed a grimace as he moved through the weedy depths, his strokes silent, his breaths mere whispers. Gathering the plantlife about himself like a second cloak, he looked like some sort of monster himself, little more than a pair of peering golden eyes from a mask of black reeds.

It wasn’t long before he made it to the Golden Barge, it was easy to find as it was the largest ship within the small port. Shrugging off the weeds that hid him, he looked about himself. There were two options before him; climb the anchor chain and board from the side, or climb the ladder to the dock and sneak aboard across the boarding plank.

Sorry, I was making a cup of tea, I’ll get my options and shit together this time

He couldn’t risk being seen, even by a single drunkard. He was fairly sure the deck was clear of patrols, there had been none while he watched from the alley at least. So he decided he would climb the chain. He wasn’t known for his strength, but this wasn’t exactly a difficult task even for him. He hoisted himself up the thick chain with relative ease, emerging at the edge of the ship, peering over before he slung his wet body onto the wooden sea vessel.

Immediately he noted a problem with his actions. He was now completely soaked, this wasn’t too much of an issue for his leather armour as it wasn’t able to soak up water, but his woollen cloak was heavy with the moisture of the harbour’s murky waters. A pool of water was already forming at his feet.

He was no alone on the boat, he could hear murmured voices below him, and this was no surprise. While most of the crew would be staying at the tavern, there would have to be some meagre guard left over, because surely not all of their goods had been offloaded. If he tried to sneak through the inner vessel dripping as he was, it would surely leave a trail that could be followed, and while he could wring out the cloak, the way it clung to him was certainly not helpful.

The cloak was useless to him now, even with it his swords and eyes might give him away in any case. It was unfortunate but it had served its purpose. He tore it from his shoulders, snapping the tie string as he did so – after all he wouldn’t need it any longer. The garment was then tossed to the sea, the wind unable to catch it due to the water that weighed it down. It made a light splash in the water, but the sound was drowned out by all the other splooshes and splashes of the docks.

Now he needed to determine his destination, he would need to narrow his search down somewhat if he didn’t want to search the entire ship that night. He had a few options before him; the Captain’s quarters were apt to have all sorts of documents and information, but there was always the chance of Hermenegildo being there, the stores would be an interesting destination too if they were carting humans there would be evidence there, then again there may be things of interest on other areas of the ship.

There was a habit of men such as Hermenegildo that Garland knew of through his teachings, those who carried illegal goods often did so in the same way they carried their legal goods, almost out of habit. If there were slaves aboard, or any other contraband goods, they would likely be in the cargo hold, hidden down there somewhere but still down there nonetheless.

He crept silently down into the belly of the ship, drawing his knife before he went. He would not risk the club right now, it was difficult to be non-lethal with the butt of the blade, but a swift slice of the throat was still more effective than a bonk to the head.

He realized soon enough that he was coming close to the source of the murmuring he could hear above deck, though it was louder here, and he could count the voices as he moved silently forward. Six men by the sounds of things, jeering and cheering over some sort of competition by the sounds. He turned a corner then as he thought about it, and with some measure of dismay found the source of the noise.

There at the end of the hall was the door to the cargo hold, but next to that door was another, this one was wide open with light pouring out. As he approached and peeked around the corner, he saw this was where the six men were having their competition. Men gathered around a table, playing some sort of game where they danced a knife between their fingers, stabbing at the table. The two that were playing were being cheered by the others, seemingly completely wrapped up in the game. It looked like an idiotic game, but one the Witcher would undoubtedly win if he were given the chance to play.

Panthers were silent, Panthers were deadly, but most of all Panthers were cautious. He could have taken those men in armed combat, of that he was sure. He would likely have been able to kill two men before weapons were drawn, if he were fast enough. He might also have been able to slip by just as they went up in a roar of cheers at one man striking his finger and cursing to the Gods. But instead he went with the safer option; to close the door and keep moving.

He reached out a hand to the door, curse his luck that it would swing into the room rather than out. He didn’t try for the door knob, instead he placed his fingers at the meeting of the hinges, pulling tight on the door so that it would slowly ease shut. It took some time, but finally the door eased back to the point where it was mostly closed.

This done he took to his feet, slipping by the door and grabbing for the handle to the door that lead into the cargo hold. Just as he turned the knob he heard a man grunt, “Argh, damn door slipped shut again, somebody grab it. If the boss catches us playing with the door closed he’ll have us overboard, or worse. Not that anybody’s coming, but you know him.”

He heard the sound of a man coming to open the door, but by the time the man had eased the door back open and put something heavy to weigh it back so it would not close again, Garland was already within the cargo hold, with the door silently closed behind him.

Bonus to stealth checks for having "Stalking" Talent

Higher Finesse attribute for being a Panther.

So stealth checks are easy as Merribelle.
>>
Now I’m not well trained Witcher, but if I were to enter the cargo hold of a trades merchant who dealt in precious metals, spices and materials, I don’t know what I’d do with myself. I’d likely fill my britches with gold or silver bars, my pockets with spices and dash out there in a moment. But of course, this was no normal cargo hold in any case.

Immediately upon entering the room Garland’s nose picked up the a mingled musk of smells. Amongst the sweet scents of cinnamon and herbs, he could smell something bitter, the foul stench of days old urine. Scanning the room with his keen eyes, it did not take him long to realize where the scent was coming from.

Amongst the boxes of silks, silver bars and spices there were large crates, approximately six feet tall. All of them were open, and there were no signs of the contents of the boxes, but there were things within that were of interest. At the back of each large crate were metallic rings, similar to those used to bind criminals. There were two pairs in each of the ten or so large crates, one pair at the top – likely to hold hands – and one at the bottom – likely for ankles. In some there were stains from blood, faeces and urine – as well as who knew whatever other fluids. These were clearly used to store humans, though there were none here now.

“Slave trade… or worse?” Garland wondered aloud, though his voice was barely a whisper.

Well, even a man such as Garland is entitled to a few little sins in his lifetime, though stealing from slavers was hardly a sin now was it? Taking a leather bag from a pile he found, he went to the cluster of goods crates, looking to find some items of use. The man had offered him silver after all, why not simply take some? Into his sack went a number of silver bars, he might have been able to take more than he did, but there was little room since he had come with so many weapons. He also grabbed some herbs which looked useful, he would identify them properly at a later date. Finally as he was about to turn away his eyes fell upon something that surprised him.

It was a chunk of bluish metal, trapped within stone. It was sitting upon a crate, wrapped in linen cloth to protect it. The metal was definitely not of this world, rather it looked as though it had come from a meteorite. “Blue meteorite steel…” he breathed, taking the chunk and stuffing it in his small carrying bag. Such things were rare.

Now he was ready to leave, laden with goods that would likely make him a fine new sword. But before he was able to leave, something caught his eye once more, it seemed he was spotting valuables left and right this night. Tucked away in a corner, half hidden by a scrap of leather that had fallen to the floor was a small silver item. Closer inspection revealed it to be a locket of some sort. He couldn’t unlock it, as it seemed to require a tiny key to open it, but there was a name inscribed upon the back, though some letters were faded.

“I-se -ar-h”

Sexy, these slavers
>>
Interesting – the Witcher thought, before tucking it away as well, he might have to try and pry it open later to figure out who it belonged to at a later time, though he had his suspicions.

Now it was time to visit the Captain’s Quarters, but there was only one problem with that idea; the door to the games had been propped open, there would be no subtle closing of the door this time. As he eased himself into the hallway he realized the games were still going, though the players had switched places. One man was missing, likely nursing a stabbed finger or two Garland assumed.

His options were similar to the previous attempt, though more limited.

The men were likely drunk, not to mention how cocky they seemed to be that nobody would be here. Closing the door had simply been a precaution, like the true Panther he was Garland was swift and silent. He waited for his chance, which came in just a moment as a man stabbed his hand and gave a howl. His howl was echoed in cheers as the men who had bet on the other man cheered, dancing in place and swinging their arms in triumph.

There was a flash of shadow at the door, and then nothing, as Garland passed by without a trace. He was gone in seconds, down the hallways of the inner barge heading his way towards the Captain’s Quarters, which he had passed on his way down.

Unfortunately though, on his way turned a corner a bit too hastily – perhaps a sign that he was still fresh from graduation – and found himself before the sixth member of the guards, his fingers now bound in cloth, and a piece of dried jerky dangling from his lips. Upon seeing the masked Witcher the man jumped, the jerky falling from his lips.

Garland had but a second to react.

We're not going to be here that long. He's about to get conked on the head with a solid piece of wood? By a goddam monster hunting mutant
>>
His club was in his hand almost before he had made the decision to take it out. The smooth, polished wood held firm in his right and as he brought it across the man’s skull before he could even muster up more than “HE-“ his cries were cut short, almost making it sound like a hiccup.

Still it was a sound nonetheless and Garland was in no mood to be fighting off angry sailors during this excursion. Working fast he made the man lay against the nearest wall, even tilting him slightly to make him look a little more realistically drunk. Looking at him it looked real enough, unless you ran a hand through his hair to feel the large bump that would already be forming atop his thick skull.

“Sleep well,” he hissed with a brief smirk, before disappearing into the shadows of the halls again.

He had not been far from the Captain’s Quarters, but not close enough that that small burst of noise would have been heard. He first looked under the door to see if he could detect any light, then listened for sound. He heard nothing, but didn’t want to assume he was in the clear. He tried the knob cautiously, and found the door to be locked. This he had expected, quickly drawing a small pair of implements to help him pick the lock. This was all a part of his Panther training, and he thanked it now as he heard a satisfying ‘click’ and the door eased open silently.

Suddenly a wave of warm, sex and sweat scented air wafted out at him, and he had to thank his good graces for the mask he wore, for it dulled the stench. Before him was the Captain’s quarters, a large room with a large double bed, a writing desk, and a number of other personal effects, as well as a strongbox for storage.

>>

Loot the chest. I aint even waiting for the next update
>>
Laying upon the bed were three naked individuals, one of which was Hermenegildo. The other two were female, one was Elven, the other Human, both wore collars and were chained at the hands and wrists. They slept on either side of the bloated, hairy man, one dripping with his seed from her womanhood, the other from her arse. Their sleep did not seem natural, and Garland assumed they had been drugged, probably unconscious – or near to it – since the beginning of their lovemaking. Hermenegildo himself was snoring lightly, one hand still cupping tender young titflesh.

This scene in itself wasn’t evidence of slavery, after all it could be just fetish work, Garland had heard of worse. But he was no fool, he knew what this was, and knew that had he an honest guard with him he could have Hermenegildo up on the gallows in minutes. But he was nothing if not thorough, perhaps he should look for more… paper evidence. Given the chance the merchant may find a way to hide these girls, and he thought that if Barth was in on this, he might help.

No, if he wanted to put this monster to the stocks, he would need such evidence that Barth would have to accept it, for fear of civilians revolting. But to sneak in now could risk everything, perhaps his life even.

I see that many of your faces have turned sour at the thought of this scene, think then as Garland must have, of what this man truly was, and you can understand why he gave up any pretence of stealth at that moment. Moving to the bed he drew his knife, pounced onto the sleeping merchant, and placed it upon his throat.

The man was awake in moments, confused and dazed. He looked up into the glaring golden eyes of the Witcher and immediately knew that he was caught. I doubt he even needed to feel the blade at his neck to know what the Witcher intended.

“W-w-witcher!” he gasped, and as he did so Garland could feel his throat rising against the blade just enough to provide pressure that the man would feel. “Wh-what?”

“I need documents that prove that you’ve been turning women from this town into slaves and selling them, that is what you’ve been doing… right?”

Hermenegildo may have been many things, but he was not stupid, he knew lying was not the best course of action here. “Y-yes!” he whimpered “I keep a log, and papers f-from each sale in my desk! Oh Witcher, please! You’ll only turn me over to the Captain yes? Your kind only kills monsters yes?”

“Yes Mr Delgado, I only kill monsters.” And with those final words he let his blade slide across the fat throat of the merchant, listening as the man’s cries turned to whimpers, and then to gurgles as he choked on his own blood. Their eyes never broke contact until the merchant’s rolled back into his skull with one final bubbly “gluchd” sound escaping his crimsoned lips.

I think both sides of this argument have valid points

On one side this is Garland's first real mission beyond apprenticeship, he's likely to make mistakes by being hot-blooded. Even though Witchers are said to be emotionless we've seen this isn't true with other witchers including Geralt.

And yet he came here for information, and hadn't guaranteed it when he killed Hermenegildo (who has a bitch of a name to type quickly) and that was a clear mistake that a Witcher shouldn't have made.

Thanks for playing guys, as usual questions are comments are appreciated and welcome.

you sure do take quests very seriously don't you?

Try and have fun man. Use the hate on like... racists or something.

Just a heads up as to how the tree will change now.

From Aer we gain insight into what Igni and Channel do, as well as revealing two skills beyond Igni "Burst" and "Vigor"

On the Stealth tree side we find out what Shadow does, and reveal the two connected skills "Debilitate" and "Sudden Strike"

Shit guys, what the fuck happened?

Nice job overall though. Even if Barth is corrupt there's little point in him turning against us since the Captain is dead. Hell, it'd make him a hero to the town.

Should update archive if you haven't already just done so, gettin' near the bottom and thread getting pruned.

Suptg self-updates every few hours. And after that bump, we're now quite a ways from falling off the board.
