Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread, you discovered a head in a jar, your friends got into a fight, and then you finally reached the lift you've been looking for.

“Seems like we can't go an hour without seeing some severed body part, though at least this one isn't screaming.” Profectus remarks at the sight of the hand. The gauntleted hand has been wedged through a metal grille that forms a cage around the lift. You'd guess it was ripped off judging by the strips of flesh and tendon hanging off the forearm and the jagged protrusions of broken bone. You think the gauntlet itself may be enchanted. Through the lens of your magic sight it has a faint glow.

“I am more concerned that the rest of the body is not present. Was it dragged off, eaten? We have no way of knowing.” Chryssa interjects. Darzi seems to be inspecting the blood on the floor of the lift. Much of it has already congealed into a semi-solid mass, and it lends the entire lift a sort of sickly, coppery scent. However, you note that it's smeared as though someone dragged something across it. You can also pick out a number of bootprints and less familiar, four-toed, clawed footprints.

As the majority of your party steps into the lift and goes about picking out spots not soaked in blood, seriously you'd expect there to be more than a lone hand with all this blood everywhere, Fulvia takes up position by a small pedestal with a rounded indent in the top. “You need to remove my core and place it within this receptacle so that I may begin lowering the lift. What level would you like me to send the lift to?”

>Level 7286, the level Baldev got off on. You have no way of knowing if he ever reached the bottom after all.

How long will the journey down take? Can we meditate while it goes?

It should take pretty long considering it's at least 12 miles and it's straight down so you can't go more than like 15 mph.

Someone wanna look up how fast the lift has to go to outpace the gravity acting on us and just leave us in a free fall?
>>
“Hold on a moment, Fulvia. I'm going to take a look at this gauntlet.” You say whilst picking your way across the floor of the lift. You grab hold of the severed limb, careful to ensure you only touch the armored portions. It might just be dead flesh but you still don't want to go touching it. It takes some wiggling but eventually you manage to jerk the damn thing out of the metal grille. It was really wedged in there.

Removing the gauntlet itself from the hand is a slightly more complicated task. It's no longer attuned to the previous wearer, due to his death and all, but it's still wedged onto his arm fairly tightly. The gauntlet is composed of some sort of metal forearm guard reminiscent in some ways of the control panel on your Centurion Armor and extending from that is a... cloth glove. You've never really seen a material like this, but cloth is the closest you can think of. Attached to that are an array of metal bits and pieces, wires running throughout the glove itself and into the forearm guard. Perhaps it enhances spells cast through it? Unfortunately you don't see any overt runes.

In the end you try pressing one of the buttons, which gets the forearm guard to slide open and unseal itself from the man's arm. You note that there are holes just all over his forearm where the gauntlet had been covering. No wonder his arm ripped off before it slipped out of the gauntlet, the gauntlet bolted itself into his arm. That must have been horribly, horrible painful.

>Toss it in the cloak, you can mess with it later.

fire is like last on the list.

Metal because sanity

Nature because we could get Vatis in no time at all

Metas and affects because they can be op as hell and they add to our pool like crazy. Plus lots of new armor abilities.

You shake the hand out of the gauntlet and then toss it into your cloak. You can deal with it later. Right now you have more important things to deal with. Like getting this lift moving. You turn around and make your way back to where Fulvia is waiting, pressing the cover on the back of her neck that conceals the apple-sized gem that makes up her core. “Alright, Fulvia. When I plug you in send the lift to level seven thousand two hundred eighty six. I'll toss your body into the lift and then once it's moving I'll just need to grab your core and hop on before it goes too far.”

She shrugs her shoulders and you pluck her core out of her body. The projection she'd been putting up flickers and dies as the body slumps to the floor. You catch it before it hits the stone and instead toss it to Chryssa in the lift. Then you set the gem on the pedestal and wait.

It doesn't take long for the lift to shudder into motion, whatever drives it groaning in complaint as it begins to lower the massive metal construction. You pluck Fulvia's core out of the depression in the center of the pedestal and duck into the lift before it can get too far. Chryssa turns her body around so you can plug her back in, and her projection flickers back to life shortly afterward. As she's righting herself and straightening out her armor Fulvia gives you a brief update on the situation. “I estimate that it will take roughly two and a half hours to reach our destination, now that I have reengaged the safeties.”

That's a lot of time to kill, but not enough to really get much done. You could probably finish a handful or so of chapters in a book, you don't really need to replenish your reserves at all so that's out. If you were lucky you could meditate and maybe master the leaping metamagic effect or gain an insight towards the next level of some element. Of course you could just chat with your party.

You pick a section of floor largely devoid of blood and sit down, reaching into your cloak to withdraw the Five Effects book. You flip it open to the index page and scan down the list until you find the section on manipulate, flipping through the book to the appropriate page. While you get settled you note that Profectus has approached Fulvia and the two of them are speaking quietly amongst each other. Judging by the look of guilt on Profectus' face, he's probably apologizing. Meanwhile Chrys and Darzi have struck up a conversation about the most efficient ways to incapacitate armored opponents. It seems rather impassioned, with Chryssa arguing in favor of kicking them in the crotch.

You tune out the conversation as you begin to delve into the pages of this book. It starts off with a simple introduction of what the leaping effect is and what it does. At it's most basic, manipulate is about using one's vys to move an object. It's described as an invisible hand that may reach anything the vatis can see. You know from personal experience that its main use is slapping people in the back of the head without them knowing it was you, as well as pulling up women's dresses and causing a poor trader's horse to run off. Your master was a real dick sometimes, come to think of it.

Continuing on you find that it has other uses besides pranks. Manipulate can be used to temporarily enhance one's control over an element. So it can allow someone to control water like a Expert Water Vatis even if they're only a Vatis or even an Apprentice. It does not enhance any of the element's other effects, for instance it won't help a water vatis heal a wound or anything similar. Manipulate is also used in conjunction with the effect itself to counter spells like poison and paralysis. There are seldom few examples of manipulate working with metamagic, but the author says that supposedly manipulate vys allows one to control a people and animals like puppets.
(1/2 or 3)
>>
After explaining what manipulate does the author launches into an explanation of how to learn the effect itself. He recommends that one meditate on manipulate by trying to form a third arm extending from one's chest and then using this arm to lift an object one would not normally be able to lift magically. The examples he gives are things like clothing, armor, pots, flowers. He specifically recommends against trying to move fire, water, or anything made of stone as the vatis would likely end up leaning on their knowledge of those elements to achieve their goal, rather than the manipulate spell. Overall it sounds fairly simple.

You're about to continue reading up on what sort of theoretical uses Manipulate might have, and what it might do combined with some of the rarer metamagic effects, but your concentration is broken by the sound of something screeching close-by. You dog-ear the page you were on and stuff the book in your cloak, springing to your feet fully expecting to come under attack at any given moment. Nobody else seems to have noticed though. Chryssa is blushing bright red at whatever it is Darzi just told her while Profectus and Fulvia are sitting against the wall of the lift smiling and chatting amongst one another, apparently the argument is water under the bridge.

The screeching returns, echoing through the halls of the mine. It's not like Ricky's screech, it's a sort of horrible burbling yell, as if someone was trying to shout through tar. It was louder than the first screech you heard, so you must be getting closer. Still none of your companions seem to notice.

>Maybe it's nothing, you are insane after all.

“Did you hear that?” That seems to get everyone's attention. Profectus shakes his head slowly. “Didn't hear a thing. What did it sound like?” You sigh. “Gods above, Prof. You're not making me feel any more sane. Am I really the only one who heard that screeching?” Chryssa speaks up. “I thought I heard something, but it was too quiet to really make out. I discounted it as some distant creature not worth worrying about.” You wave her off. “No no, this wasn't distant at all. It sounded like it was coming from further down the lift shaft, couldn't have been more than a hundred feet away.” You reach into your cloak and withdraw your spear. “Just... do me a favor and arm yourselves. It will soothe my paranoia.”

Profectus draws his falcata and Chryssa pulls out her mace. Darzi's armor seals itself off as she prepares for a fight, though you don't actually think she has a weapon other than her fist in that armor. Fulvia draws her gladius from where it lies hidden in her voluminous armored robes. Feeling slightly safer you approach the edge of the lift and peer over the edge to see if you can spot the source of the screech.

You find yourself staring into the face of some sort of otherworldly beast woven seemingly from shadow. It is an insectile creature with odd glowing crystals protruding from its grotesquely large head. Four empty sockets lie where you would expect its eyes to be, and ethereal mandibles twitch and wriggle around its gaping maw. Come to think of it, it reminds you of Ricky's drawing in a vague way, though it's missing the flowing red scarf.

Before you're even fully aware of what it is you're looking at a scythe like arm is swinging its way towards your head.

You jerk your head back, the scythe-like arm sailing past right where your neck would've been and instead latching onto the edge of the lift. You take several steps back, dropping into a fighting stance as the creature hauls its way over the lift railing. As more and more of it begins to come into view you get a better idea of what it is. Its legs are spindly things, shrouded in the same tar-like substance the rest of it is. In its chest you can pick out protrusions of bleached white bone, a ribcage of some sorts. It has six arms, each one tipped in a long, curved blade.

It bends itself towards you and lets out a screech, flecks of black tar flying from its mouth as it does so. You're about to let out a war cry and launch your attack when Profectus ask in an utterly nonplussed tone. “Mik, what are you doing? Are you just screwing with us? It isn't funny.” You glance over at him as if he's insane. How could he not see the giant insectile monster right in front of you? At least Chryssa seems to be leaping into action. She's run up next to you with mace in hand though she hesitates in attacking. She doesn't seem to be looking at it so much as she's looking through it, as if she has only a vague idea that it's there at all.

I actually changed the way armor works a while back. Better armor will allow you to soak damage more effectively and your spear allows you to dodge more effectively.

It didn't make sense for your spear to help you absorb a blow from a fireball because it has two long prongs on either side of the blade to help you catch attacks.

You thrust your hand forward, channeling vys as you do so. Ice rapidly begins to condense around its joints but much to your surprise as it does so the black substance the creature is composed of begins to bubble and smoke. It seems like the more ice you create the faster it melts away and the hotter the creature's 'flesh', if you can really call it flesh, seems to become.

You change tactics, instead of trying to just freeze its joints you condense a massive pillar of ice around it as rapidly as you're able. It rises up, encasing the creature's lower body and several of its insectoid arms rapidly. Fog begins to billow off of the creature and fill pockets that it melts into the ice, but for now it's immobilized. You also note that the longer it remains encased in ice, the thinner it seems to become. In fact you can sort of pick out what you think might be bones hidden under the black tar that covers its legs.
>Vys Pool: (25/27)

Chryssa sees her opportunity and steps in, swinging her mace towards its insectoid head. She smashes the weapon into its skull and you hear something crack loudly and several of those glowing crystals on its head break off. The creature screeches loudly as a good portion of its head sloughs off, sticking to Chryssa's mace, but it doesn't seem all that injured by the blow.

>Enemy Turn
>Enemies Remaining: 1x Hunter Drone (Immobilized)

The creature rears back, its mandibles working furiously in a manner reminiscent in many ways of a spider's spinneret. When it pushes itself forward it shoots forth a glob of that vile black goo roughly the size of your head, and unfortunately for Chrys she doesn't manage to avoid it. It slams into her chest, immediately beginning to eat away at her leather armor. Fortunately the hazmat function of her Technician Armor beneath kicks in and seems to prevent the acid from actually damaging her. Still, that armor is ruined and judging by the amount of smoke roiling off of her mace, it may be ruined as well.
(1/2)
>>
You also think the fog that's spilling off of its body may be eating away at the metal floor of the lift, because it's rapidly beginning to discolor and smoke is rising from the floor wherever the fog touches. At least it sinks instead of rising, there isn't much risk that you'll inhale it.

>Stab it in the chest with your spear, maybe you'll hit something vital.

You channel a poison spell through your spear, black ichor beginning to seep through the carvings in your spear as you do so. At least it doesn't warp and twist like your old spear did when you channeled a poison spell through it. You jam the weapon into the creature's abdomen and the spell discharges. You're relieved to see that the poison spell begins to eat away at the goo, confirming your suspicions that magic is indeed the only thing holding this creature together. Unfortunately just as you think you've dealt a major wound the affected portion of the creature's body sloughs off, falling to the floor and slowly being eaten away by your spell.

Still, you've revealed something that looks important. A glowing bulb of... something at the creature's core. It reminds you in some ways of an egg. Chryssa seems to see it as well, because she swings her mace at the creature's center, right towards whatever it is your spell exposed. Unfortunately the black goo has severely weakened her mace, and the force of her swing is enough to send the bladed head flying off the handle. It impacts the metal grille that surrounds the lift and ends up stuck there. Chryssa is now without a weapon save for her bow.

“You know, guys, you could attack any moment now! It's not that fucking hard to figure out where the monster is even if you can't see it!” You shout over your shoulder at the rest of the party. Profectus throws his hands up in the air. “You're attacking nothing, Mik! It's thin air!” Fulvia nods in agreement, while Darzi just looks on confused.

>Enemy Turn
>Enemies Remaining: 1x Hunter Drone (Immobilized)

You're about to take another stab at the creature, relieved to see at the very least that channeling a poison spell through your spear prevented that inky substance that makes up the creature from attaching itself to your spear and eating away at the metal. Unfortunately before you get an opportunity the ice that surrounds its lower body and a good portion of its abdomen begins to crack, a shard flying off of it and spewing vile fog out of the resulting hole. You hear Profectus shout something behind you and see Chryssa dive to the side, not a moment later the entire pillar you erected around the creature goes up in one big bang, sending shards of ice flying in every direction and fog billowing into the air. At least your armor has a hazmat function.

>Duck!
>Erect a barrier of ice in front of you, hopefully that will be enough to deflect any shards headed towards you. (1 vys)

>>
>>32428127
Alright, minor change. I hate fighting golems. And the effect they have on our dice.
>>
>>32428092
That amplifies the effects of your spell, rather than making it easier to hit with your spear.

For reference, if you had simply cast the poison spell through touch or at range then the bulb in the creature's abdomen wouldn't have been exposed.
>>
>>32428220
Ah ok, i just found it weird that you wrote it as, "to poison the creature" instead of hit with poison spell.
>>
You ignore the ice shards headed your way, instead channeling another poison spell into your spear and stepping in close to get a thrust in towards the glowing bulb at its center. As you drive the spear forward you're surprised to see its arms dart out and grab your spear by the tip, wedging its arms between the speartip and the two protrusions to either side. Huh, you suppose those can be used against you.

Still, it's an easy fix. You channel a burst of vys to enhance your strength and another to further empower the poison spell. With a vicious twist of your spear you manage to break the creature's clawed arms and force the weapon into the bulb in the monstrosity's abdomen. The blade plunges into the glowing object and the spell discharges. Instead of rotting away, as the substance the creature is composed of did, the bulb pops and spews some sort of white pus-like substance. The creature screeches and stumbles back, beginning to lose cohesion rapidly.

It falls to the floor and begins to writhe about, the black goo evaporating rapidly. Instead of turning into that vile fog that was created when it touched the ice, it instead merely vanishes into thin air. Perhaps turning into raw vys, though you'd need to activate your magic sight to be sure. You blink, and the monster is gone. In its place is a bleached, cracked skeleton with a small growth attached to its spine. The growth reminds you of the bulb in many ways, but its been cut open and oozes that black inky substance. Judging by the size and shape of the skeleton, you'd guess that it was once a Samjan.
(1/2)
>>
You turn around triumphantly. “See? I told you there was a-” You're disappointed to see that Profectus has been laid out, clocked in the head by a chunk of ice. Darzi is fine, her armor absorbed most of the damage. Fulvia is also perfectly unharmed. Only Profectus actually got hurt. Even Chryssa, the lightest armored of all of you, walks away without a scratch. Even if there is a massive, gaping hole in her leather armor and her mace is now ruined.

The fog has largely dissipated but the lift has been fairly severely weakened. The blood boiled away on contact with the fog and much of the metal floor is either rusted, discolored, or eaten through with holes. The good news is that most of the damage is localized around where the creature had been standing, so as long as you avoid that spot you shouldn't go plummeting to the bottom of the mine.

>Heal Profectus, gloat that you were right.
>Inspect the skeleton, maybe you can find out more about the creature.

Oh, and your Vys Pool is at 15/27.
>>
You approach Profectus' unconscious form. Why he didn't think to lower the face guard on his armor, you'll never know. Regardless a block of ice smashed into his nose and it looks pretty damn broken. With but a wave of your hand his nose sets itself and the bleeding stops, a quickly forming bruise rapidly dissipating. He bolts upright, coughing. “Told you so, Prof. I told you so.” You crouch down next to him, patting him on the back while he wipes his nose. “Next time trust the insane man when he says there is a monster to attack.” He shoots you a glare, but sighs and nods his head. “Alright, I'll take your expert opinion when it comes to invisible horrors next time.”

Fulvia quietly speaks up while you pick your way carefully across the weakened floor towards the skeleton to see if you can learn anything about the creature that attacked you. “In our defense, there was nothing to indicate where exactly the monster was. The pillar of ice you formed was just a solid block of ice, the hole in Chryssa's armor was not there. The only indication we had that the fight was real was when the mace head flew off and hit the lift cage.” You shrug your shoulders as you crouch down next to the skeleton. “Then next time this happens, because I'm sure it will, just attack where I'm attacking.”

That conversation concluded, you lean in to inspect the growth on the skeletons spine. It appears to be some sort of plant growth, roots digging through the bone and into the spinal cord beneath. You note that the spinal cord has been preserved, even if the rest of the body has been eaten away or rotted or whatever it was that happened to it. You wonder then if the brain has been kept alive by whatever this growth is.
(1/2)
>>
The bulb of the growth itself resembles a seed in many ways. It has a hard shell and seems to be hollow on the inside, or at least right now it's hollow. It was probably filled with that inky black substance before you punctured it, because that same substance is pooled all over the floor around it.

good.cause i'd rather not put her in the the Haician armor.
>You reach into your cloak once more, this time Ricky merely pushes the armor out of your cloak and rather than a loud clang, this set merely thuds weightily into the ground. Your recognize the set immediately from what you've seen illustrated in books and upon the walls of ruins. It's ancient Hiacian armor, crafted from the carapace of the massive Palaka Worms that roam the Deep Desert. It was said to have mystic qualities, enhancing the effects of any spell cast by the wearer and just as protective as steel. Unfortunately the secret to shaping carapace was lost after the collapse of Hiacia.

It's fairly clear that this armor was crafted for looks as much as it was for protection. Runes are carved onto every section of the armor, praising the gods and asking for their guidance. The mask is crafted to resemble the face of Surya, cast in an eternal scowl. Gold trinkets dangle from the pauldrons, mask, and bracers. Each one was said to indicate a Rhynian killed, and this armor has dozens of the gold beads dangling from it. You're not sure if this armor would protect from the heat, but it's certainly a fascinating piece.

Sounds like we could use it better since we're the stronger spell caster.
+ It likely will give us a bonus to our meditations.
>>
You channel water magic into your armor, the floor of the lift fading away as the ebbs and flows of ambient vys come into view. You note that the black substance oozing out of the bulb glows a bright violet color under your magic sight, and the growth itself glows dimly though it's fading by the minute. The skeleton's skull, joints, and especially its spine are also glowing fairly bright. Perhaps concentrations of that black goo lie there.

Next you push your spear into your cloak and withdraw your nature staff, channeling energy into it and casting the resulting green glow over the skeleton. Unfortunately nothing appears to be alive on the skeleton, either the bulb wasn't a plant after all or you killed it and the staff can no longer detect it. Ah well.

Finally you come to the skull itself. It lit up under your magic sight so you think you can safely say that there is a brain in there. Still you motion Chryssa over. Once she's picked her way across the weakened floor without incident and crouched down next to you, you prop up the skeleton so the head is vertical. “Could you cut the top of this skull off?” She looks at you oddly for a moment before withdrawing a dagger from a pocket on her armor you didn't even see, pressing the tip into the bone and carefully scoring a deep groove around the skull. Once she's completed the circle she hits the skull in the side of the head firmly, cracking it and allying her to pry off the top.

You feel as though the foul smell that emanates from the skull hits you like a physical force. You recoil against your will, though Chryssa seems remarkable unphased. The brain, though intact, has been largely rotted away and is covered in that black substance.

>>
With your inspection complete, you grab the skeleton by the ribs and hoist it up, tossing it over the edge of the lift and watching it plummet towards the bottom for a few brief moments. That done you pick your way back to the safer, less deteriorated portions of the lift with Chryssa in tow. “Stand still a moment.” You instruct her, crouching down to inspect the hole in her armor. Even though the Technician's Armor beneath is undamaged, the leather armor it was reinforced with is almost completely useless. Her torso is basically unprotected. It's a fairly easy fix of course, you'll just need to find a tanner to fix the leather, but you won't be near a tannery for several days at the least.

“Can you fix this yourself?” You ask, standing up. She shrugs her shoulders. “I am unsure, allow me to try.” Her armor glows softly, presumably as she channels vys into it, but while some superficial damage done to the Technician’s Armor is repaired the leather remains damaged.

>She'll just have to tough it out until you get to a city.
>You ought to give her the Unknown Armor. She won't be able to wear the Elaudian Death Mask while she wears it and it's probably not all that protective, but it actually accommodates for her horns.
>You ought to give her the Ancient Hiacian Armor. She won't be able to wear the helmet because of her horns, so it won't be sealed against environmental hazards, but maybe the enchantments will make her a better fighter.

You rub your chin for a moment, trying to decide what armor you ought to give her. After a short mental debate you shrug your shoulders and decide that she's a big girl, she can probably decide for herself. “Alright, I have three sets of armor that I looted from that vault. I know the make of two of them but the third is unknown to me- you know what, I'll just show you.” You reach into your cloak and withdraw the unknown armor first, laying it on the ground. It's surprisingly light, actually. Chrys crouches down to take a look at it while you reach in for the next set, only for Ricky to shove the Ancient Hiacian set through your cloak. Finally you just find a spot and hold your cloak open until Ricky tosses the Eastern Pidjatan set of armor through.

Your task more or less done, you step away and let Chrys look over the armors. She spends a good few minutes looking at them, even channeling magic into her mask for whatever reason. In the end she picks up the unknown, horned suit of armor and nods her head firmly. “I will wear this set, I believe there is a good chance the mask functions similarly to my current mask and my horns will fit in the helmet.” She looks up. “You'll need to turn around for a moment so that I may change.” You nod your head. “Alright, but let me put the other armors away first.”

(1/2)
>>
You pack the other armors away swiftly with Chrys's help and then approach Fulvia, making sure to position yourself so that you're not looking at Chrys. “Do you think you can do something about the damage to the floor?” Fulvia shrugs her shoulders. “Most likely, though I will need to draw metal from other parts of the lift to do it. Either that or use earth magic to strip stone from the walls and then metal to transmute it.” You wave a hand dismissively. “Whichever way works is fine. What about Chryssa's mace?” She nods her head. “That will be an easy fix using the stone to metal method, or it should be at least. I must admit I have never repaired an enchanted object other than my own body.”

“Well, hopefully it will work out. I appreciate it Fulvia.” She shakes her head. “Do not mention it, I am obligated to perform the task you assign.” She remarks before turning her attention to the deteriorated metal floor. You hear stone crack and see holes patched by rock as she sets about the patch job, and it's only a short while later that Chryssa calls out. “You may turn around.”

You do so, and find that Chryssa cuts quite the intimidating figure in that armor. The horns protruding from the mask have shifted and arranged themselves to fit hers. She approaches Profectus and slugs him on the arm, causing him to wince. “You peeked.” She remarks calmly, though judging by the pained expression on Profectus' face that punch probably hurt quite a bit.

“So, what does that armor do?” You ask Chrys while returning to the spot you'd been sitting prior the battle with the horrible monstrosity. You assume a meditation pose, preparing to slip into your trance while Chrys explains. “Well, I'm not really sure. I'm still experimenting. The mask has the same function as my other one, in that it allows me to see the currents of vys in the air. However it lacks the magnification or the tracking functions. My Death Mask actually allows me to easier spot footprints and follow trails, it was very handy.”

You nod along. “Do you think there is any chance you may be able to switch out the mask on that armor for the death mask?” She thinks for a moment, and then shakes her head. “I doubt it, not without possibly damaging the armor. Perhaps I will ask Hayes about such a task when we next see him, he seems like he may be capable of performing such a feat.” You shrug your shoulders. “That's probably wise, though there will be other crafters of similar ability in Pidjata I'm sure.”

With that you slip into your meditative trance, focusing on regaining your vys. It is perhaps the first time you have been able to truly relax while meditating, allowing you to drift off and ponder your own thoughts. You find yourself gravitating towards your impending, or at least hopefully impending, confrontation with Baldev. He might have been wearing enchanted armor, but so was his companion that lost his hand and probably his life. Clearly whatever they faced down there must have been quite powerful. You also recall the heart you found on the second level, the one currently residing in your cloak. What did it awake, so far beneath the surface? The constant rumbling that has been shaking the mineshaft rhythmically since you channeled vys into the heart is louder than ever. You believe the source of the noise may be at the very bottom of the mine, or at least near it. You may even encounter it while you're down here.

Unfortunately before you can reach any major breakthroughs, or fully replenish your vys, you're dragged out of your meditation by Fulvia gently shaking your shoulders. Your eyes snap open, and you take a moment to orient yourself. The lift is still moving, and the repairs seem complete. Chrys is holding her repaired mace, so it's nice to know that Fulvia can do quick repairs on weapons and metal armors even in the midst of a dungeon.
>Vys Pool: 22/27

“We are about to arrive, a short while ago we heard a man screaming but it was distant and faint.” You push yourself up and straighten out your cloak and stretching briefly. “Well, that's worrying. Hopefully we don't run into whatever he did.” You reach into your cloak, withdrawing your spear and preparing to face whatever lies at the end of this blasted lift shaft.

As the lift grinds to a halt, you're greeted by the sight of a blood-soaked battle field. A woman's body lays half-eaten just outside the lift, the majority of her armor ruined. There is also a strange, six-legged lizard creature with spines running along its back and down its tail. Well, its corpse at least. Its head has been crushed and several puncture wounds dot its side. You note a clear trail of dried blood leading away from the battleground, further into the caves. It looks as if something was dragged along the ground in that direction.

I'm undecided on how I want to treat Enchanting's effects on your vys pool. Right now I'm thinking it won't have an effect on your vys pool, because while enchantments rely on vys to fuel themselves and they take vys to create they're really something quite different when you get down into it.

Using examples that would be more familiar, if vys is basically manipulating radiation then enchanting would be fucking around with the strings that hold the universe together (at least according to String Theory).

If I decide down the line that enchanting should increase your vys pool, I'll give you the retroactive benefits in addition to whatever benefits you earn. Frankly I sort of expected you to gain knowledge of enchanting quite a bit later than you did, but eh. It works out.

As you step out of the lift you're struck by a wave of heat, as if you'd just walked into an oven. It must be well over two hundred degrees down here. Fortunately your armor's hazmat functions kick in as you step off the lift, and the heat abates. You're actually kept quite comfortable, surprisingly. How did they manage to keep the lift shaft so cool? Is it enchanted somehow? You didn't see any runes or detect any magic. Oh well. As the rest of the party steps out of the lift their armors similarly seal themselves off. Profectus' armor seals itself completely, Darzi's helmet clamps down around her head. Chryssa's armor, you note, seems to grow metal plates from the cloth and leather it's largely made up of. Regardless she seems protected from the heat. Fulvia is, of course, unaffected.

You approach the woman's corpse, crouching down to get a better look at her. The only way you can tell that she's a woman is because the helmet has been ripped away and, though gnawed on, her features are still distinctly feminine. Her torso armor has been ripped away as well, but the vast majority of her innards are gone. Even her ribs have been broken off and presumably eaten. The armor itself is obviously enchanted, glowing clearly through your magic sight, but the vast majority of it is filled with holes and you're not actually sure how you'd go about removing it. The arms and legs are just flat out missing, so you've essentially got a girdle and a back plate. The most you can make it is that it was heavy armor, probably some method of plate.

The rest of her belongings are missing. You see no weapon, no baggage. Nothing of the sort. Your inspection complete you push yourself up, turning your attention towards Chrys. {Well, Huntress-} She interrupts. {My title was actually Head Hunter, as in the leader of the Hunter's Guild. Hunter is not a word with gender distinctions in my language.} You sigh, though your armor muffles it. {I appreciate the linguistics lesson. Would you be so kind as to recommend a course of action?} She nods her head. {Of course. I recommend you follow the trail of blood, if you look closely you can see boot prints distinguished from the trail itself, so it's likely the path that Baldev used to retreat further into the mine and lick his wounds after the battle concluded.}

You glance down the path for a moment, and then shake your head. {Why don't you just lead, Chrys?} She sets off, following the trail. {Gladly. Try to keep up.} She certainly does seem to like being in charge. Well, whatever. You tag along after her and the rest of the party follows suit.

You note that the hallways this deep are very, very rough. They don't even have wooden supports propping them up. They're also much smaller than you're used to, you actually have to duck to avoid scraping your head against the ceiling. After following this pathway for perhaps a minute the hall begins to widen out, and eventually you emerge into what you can best describe as a vast lake of magma. In the distance you think you can make out a structure of some sort, and a trail of white tiles is clearly headed in that direction. The trail of blood is following the same path.

{They likely retreated to that building-} Chryssa indicates the rounded domes of the structure in the distance. {In the hopes of finding solace. However I doubt they found it there, unless their armor was shielded, as our armors are, the heat within almost surely would have cooked them alive.}

A figure shifts atop a spire of black rock, you'd thought it simply part of the stone. It is large and reptilian, that much you can tell even from this distance, and as it raises its body up it stretches a pair of massive wings on its back. Dragon is the first word that comes to mind, but they're supposedly been dead or in hiding since before the Rise of Rhynia. Then again, if you were going to hide anywhere the bottom of this mine wouldn't be a bad place to do it.

In the legends, dragons were once worshiped as gods by the elves. Each tribe of elves had their own patron dragon whom they payed homage to, and they warred with each other frequently because dragons are petty, greedy creatures who would not even be satisfied with controlling the entirety of the world. In exchange for their adoration and service, the dragons would occasionally teach the elves some tidbit of knowledge, starting first with the knowledge of language and eventually teaching them magic and even enchanting. Your people of course know that this is patently false, magic flows forth from the wounds of Surya dealt to him by the benevolent goddess Pani and your people have always known to manipulate it.

Anyway, in myth dragons could grow to be the size of mountains, towering above any mere mortal. However, despite their power and size they would eventually be overthrown by the elves that worshiped them. They had taught the elves all they knew only to be betrayed. The first to fall would be the young dragons, with nest of eggs being smashed and hatchlings eaten. Then adults and fully grown dragons fell to elven onslaught, even if they took many with them. Eventually the oldest of the dragons retreated beneath the surface to lie in wait, until such a time as they might return.

Of course, the veracity of these stories is questionable. The time frame these stories are set in is thousands if not tens of thousands of years ago. Before the races separated.

{Lets check out the building, it might contain something of value. At the very least one would expect a suit of Technician's Armor or two.} Chrys nods her head. {Very well, though I do not like the look of that creature.} You wave her off. {It will be fine, so long as we are cautious and do not alert it to our presence.} She shrugs, but continues on down the marked path towards the building. You're perhaps halfway there when you come across the corpse that Baldev was likely dragging.

It's a man, clutching the tattered remains of his right hand to his chest. His chest has been torn open and his guts spilled. The vast majority of his face has been charred black. He's been dead for perhaps a day by your estimates, probably a bit longer. His armor has largely been burned beyond repair or is just torn to shreds, it was primarily composed of that strange materials his gauntlet was made out of, not very protective at all you'd imagine.

His eyes, though blank, seem frozen in an expression of permanent horror as they stare off into the middle distance. His mouth hangs open. You're surprised to see he hasn't been eaten, you'd certainly expect him to have been gnawed on at least slightly. You crouch down next to him to see if he has anything of value, but it seems his ruined armor is the only thing Baldev left him with after abandoning him here. Then again, you probably would've done the same if it meant you were able to escape whatever monster pursued you.

You're distracted by the heavy sound of wingbeats, and your attention is drawn once more to the dragon on its perch. It has leaped off of the stone spire and is flying low, barely feet above the surface of the magma lake, away from you. It slips past the building you're headed towards and then it's out of sight. You're at least slightly relieved that it didn't seem to see you, then again it may simply be going to fetch its mother.

(1/2)
>>
You abandon the corpse where it lay and continue on following Chrys. After a short while you reach the structure, finding that the front door has been forced open, pushed into the receptacles on either side. Likely by metal magic, if you had to guess. Inside you note three lockers, none of them opened and each one containing a suit of technician's armor. Looks like Baldev and his lackey's armor were sealed against heat after all.

The door on the opposite end of this small foyer has been broken open and resealed, melted shut with fire magic. Likely a beam spell, judging by the precision of the weld.

You glance around for a moment, before transmitting to the entire party. {Wait here, I'm going to look around and see if I can't figure out where that creature went.} Your companions nod, though Chrys doesn't seem terribly enthusiastic about it. {Be careful. It would not be fitting for you to die after coming so far.} Profectus chimes in. {Well, it would be more fitting to die down here in the thick of it than say, on the journey back to the surface. That would be a real bitch.} Chrys folds her arms in front of her chest and cocks her hips to one side, probably glaring at Profectus though it's hard to tell through the mask. You simply shake your head and depart, leaving them at the entrance to the facility.

The facility is larger than you thought, and as you make your way around it you come to realize that it's not really a cap or anything of the sort. It's more like a massive dam. As you finally manage to catch a glimpse of what lies on the other side of the facility you find yourself standing in the center of a stone bridge, staring out at a massive river of lava surrounded on either side by pillars of black stone extending into the sky. You see in the distance a group of five or six, maybe even more, of those same creatures as the one that was perched atop the pillar of cooled lava. A whole flock of them. Unfortunately it's hard to make out many details between the distance and the amount of fumes filling the air.

You pray to the gods above that Baldev decided to stick around this structure, because there is no way you would be able to find him in this vast expanse with no easily discernible trail to follow.
>1/2 or 3
>>
You turn around and make your way carefully back to your party. You find them waiting for you, exactly as you left them. Profectus is rubbing his arm though, that same spot where Chrys previously punched him. That has to hurt, since you didn't heal the bruise that formed there the first time. You wonder absentmindedly why she's so fond of beating up on him while speaking with Fulvia via the brooches. {I need you to rip open these lockers and that door.} She nods her head and raises her arms, and a moment later the locker doors fly open, their locks broken. You set about tossing the three suits of Technician's Armor into your cloak while she gathers vys to open the door, apparently a more difficult task.

The door is rent open with a loud, metallic whine. It echoes through the cavern, probably alerting anything near-by to your presence. You really hope those creatures you saw earlier are hard of hearing, because you doubt you could take on a whole flight of dragons and come out of the encounter alive. IF they really are dragons that is.

You step inside the facility and Fulvia slams the doors shut behind you, sealing them both this time. You're surprised to see how neat and orderly the facility appears, even if you do feel a tad uncomfortable despite your armor due to the heat. The floors are marble tile and the room you're in arranged around a central control panel. On either end of the room are large metal tanks, what they might contain is unknown but taking an educated guess you'd say it's probably magma from the river. The fact that this facility seems to still be operational after a thousand years of disuse is downright impressive.
(2/3)
>>
There are two doors on the opposite wall, one to the left of the control panel and one to the right. They're unlabeled, unfortunately, but the door on the right has been torn open much like the door into the facility was, it allows you a glimpse of the hallway beyond.. The control panel itself may also be worth a look.

You approach the control panel, opening the small gate that separates it from the rest of the room. Looking at the dials and controls, you note that it's similar in many ways to the control panel you saw below the generator in the Rhynian Facility north of Licae. There is an 'Output' and an 'Input' readout. The input seems massive, though you don't really have a sense of scale. The output, by comparison, is practically nonexistent. The only things using any energy are lighting and the lifts, both the maintenance lifts and the main lift. Though you do note a small amount of power is being supplied to something merely called “Projects”.

In addition to the readouts there are a number of other items on the control panel. An array of small lights much like what you saw on the Delirium Generator's control panel, the difference being all of these are green and there aren't any references made to AI. In addition there is a small terminal with a pane of black glass and a strange metal box roughly the size of a large crate beneath it, a single button on the crate labeled with the symbol for 'power'.

You approach the crate, crouching down to get a better look at it. It's encased in black metal, and surprisingly cool to the touch. {Fulvia, come here. I need to ask you something.} She approaches as ordered, standing behind you as you inspect the black box. {What is this?} She responds promptly. {We called it a computor. It was a device we used to add numbers, record data, and run simulations. Very costly to produce, it required the efforts of several enchanters working for days if not weeks just to create a single one. It was also the basis for AI, which are essentially sentient computers contained within a manufactured gemstone. They were largely phased out of use in favor of AI, but up until the death of the Empire they saw use in more reliable installations that did not need to be micromanaged.}

Well, nothing in that descriptions sounds like it's going to kill you. You press the power button. {Why didn't they just use those manufactured gems to operate computors? Wouldn't that have been much more convenient than this massive black box?} Fulvia shrugs her shoulders as the internal components of the box whir to life. {All the gems which house AI were produced by a lone enchanter, he was the only one who understood the process involved and he only ever produced a certain number per year. That is why the Empire was so desperate for alternative methods, like using living, sentient beings.}

You would think the Rhynians would have ordered this lone enchanter to teach his secrets to others, instead of resorting to torturing people for an eternity. Then again, what do you know. As you stand up the pane of glass is illuminated from the inside. A small menu appears on the pane of glass, projected you think though you can't be sure.

You look around for some method of manipulating the screen, though Fulvia solves the conundrum for you by reaching into a groove on the black box and pulling out a wide, flat board of buttons connected to the inner workings of the machine by a black cord. It is fairly simple. There is an up and down button on one side and an array of letters covering the rest of it. You press the down button once and then hit a key labeled 'Go'.

The screen vanishes, only to be replaced by a list of dates and times. There are only four entries, the earliest date listed is '4.4.3127:1427', though you're not really entirely certain when that is. You move select that entry and then settle in to read what's written.

Personally I'm pretty sure he's faking it because he was just fine yesterday. Will file a request for investigation with the higher ups. Lost several minors to a collapse further in the tunnels, fell right into the river, poor idiots.
End.”

Well, that seems normal enough. The casual disregard of sentient life is a bit unnerving but you suppose anyone would become jaded if around death enough. Come to think of it, you're probably fairly jaded all things considered. Most people probably couldn't just casually loot corpses or incinerate bandits, nor face horrible monstrosities on a damned hourly basis. Whatever, you scroll up to the next entry and select it. “Log:Cent.C.A.Publius
Generator continues to function at optimal efficiency. Mercurius died earlier today. He'd been bedridden for the last month, wasting away. Coughing up blood. Vatis tried to heal him but, they didn't have any luck. They said normally it's a simple procedure, curing an illness that is. Just a touch of water magic. For some reason this pestilence seemed resistant to their magic.
They burned the body. Worst part is I've noticed a few other men missing from morning report. Laid out sick, just like Mercurius. Vatis are worried there might be some sort of plague carried in from one of the convicts. The higher ups have already evacuated.
End”

Well, that bodes ill. You can't help but glance over your shoulder for a moment at your companions. You've been down here for at least a day... you think. Probably two. What if you've been infected by some sort of ancient plague? You're really not like to die drowning in your own blood. That would suck. You attempt to banish those thoughts from your mind, but it's a nagging worry at the back of your head. You scroll up to the next entry and select it. This one is labeled '20.5.3127:1558'.

“Log:Cent.C.A.Publius
Generator function optimal. Had a break out today. Needed to seal off the plant lest those rabid fucking animals break in and try to sabotage the generator. Said it was due to conditions in the camps. Apparently they've been dropping like flies down there and they're desperate to escape, even if it ends in death for the vast majority. Ah well.
In other news, heard there was an escaped experiment that went on a rampage up on level twelve. Apparently they'd converted some forgotten tunnel into a breeding ground for magically enhanced spiders. Who thinks to magically enhance a spider? Why did they not imagine that could possibly go wrong? Anyway, the lot of them were torched and supposedly the project has been aborted.
End”

Finally you scroll up to the last entry, the most recent. This one's third number is different from the others. It's labeled '10.8.3128:0026'. If your guesses as to the numbers' meanings are correct, this was created more than a year after the other three. Odd. You select it and delve into the reading.

“Log:Cent.C.A.Publius
It's very lonely, down here. I haven't heard word from any of the others in months. Don't know why I'm making this entry. Maybe just to help organize my thoughts. Maybe it will help with the voices.
The last of my rations are gone. I'll need to go out and look for something to eat, but I don't want to At first the screams were horrible but they've stopped now. Just the occasional banging on the door. Cries for help. I ignore them. It troubles me at night. I think, maybe, I deserve this.
At least I still have Mercurius.
End”

>Well... onwards, through the right doorway. Lets find this bastard and get out of here.
>No, he might just be luring you into a trap. Have Fulvia tear open the left doorway.
>Return to the main menu and select programs this time.

You exit the logs, finding yourself once more at the main menu. You scroll this time to programs and select it. Instead of a list of dates, you have a list of abbreviations that carry no real meaning. Not a single one of the five is more than four letters, and there is no picture or description for you to go off of. You end up just selecting the first program listed, a program labeled 'ALV.LIB'.

You find yourself looking at a hazy, black and white image on a screen. It's hard to make out what you're looking at, at first you think it's merely a black blob in a hallway, but slowly you start to make out features. Wings, a head, a long neck, four legs. It's one of those flying creatures, a fairly small one, and it's dead. There is a huge gash in its neck. Behind it is a ripped open doorway, and beyond that you think you can make out black stone.

You exit that program after a short while, since nothing seems to be happening. Next you select one labeled 'CALC.LIB'. This one, perhaps unsurprisingly, is a simple program to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You also not a number of more arcane symbols that most people likely would not recognize. Square root, sine, cosine, tangent, their various inverse functions, common exponents. You think it may even be able to graph functions, handy little device, but not overly interesting.

You exit that program and select the next one, this one labeled 'MUS.LIB'. As soon as you select it music starts to play from some unseen speaker, nearly making you jump out of your skin. It's muffled, and it sounds terrible, but still it's music from nowhere. Perhaps there is some sort of device in this black box to produce sound? You know that Fulvia's body has a device installed that allows her to speak, it may be similar. You quickly exit that program as soon as it becomes clear the music isn't particularly to your taste. It's all wind and string instruments, no percussion.

The fourth program is labeled 'PRAE.LIB'. When you select it, you hear something metal slam into the marble floor form the direction of the doorway. Glancing over your shoulder, you don't see anything amiss. No dents in the metal doors, they're still sealed shut. As soon as you exit the program you hear metal grinding against metal from just beyond the doorway. Perhaps some sort of releasable barrier?

Finally you select the last program on the list. This one is labeled 'TGEN.LIB'. Selecting it, you find a map displayed on the screen. It depicts several levels of this structure, which seems to be arrayed around a massive central chamber. A small dot indicates where you are, at the far end of the facility. You could go several levels down and exit out the other side it looks like, but that's the only other entrance or exit this facility has. Judging by the fact there wasn't a dead dragon in the entryway, the opposite exit several levels down from here is likely the one Baldev used to escape.

>Plan out a path to the exit.
