You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

Today. Today you’ve been shot, chucked in a basement, dragged out of a basement, thrown in a trunk, and had a very bad dream. But everything’s better now, because you have a ride. Procuring it took some convincing, but you just had to remind Mr. Soames that his wife shot you, and that you have enough dirt to bury him so deep that shaking hands with Satan would not be out of the question.

You let your head rest against the window, watching the night swing by, caving in before the turn of the wheels. You kind of feel like you have a chauffeur or something. And it’s a nice car, too. You’re not really a car person, so you couldn’t tell anyone why it’s nice or what kind of nice it is… but it seems pretty good.

Mr. Soames shifts uncomfortably in the driver’s seat. His heart rate’s still elevated. To be expected, really. After a short while, he clears his throat, glancing over at you.

“You know… you should…” He looks back and forth nervously, checking the road. Or just feigning an excuse to break eye contact. “…No offense, but you should probably do your invisible thing when you get out.”
>>
You turn your gaze toward him, raising a quizzical eyebrow.

“You’ve got a…” He goes to gesture toward something, but ends up just generally motioning over his whole face. “…this… this thing with your… just look at the side mirror.”

You do as he says. The JJ that stares in at you is a drained, luminously pale creature. Your skin reminds you of wet paper, like something’s ripped all the substance out of it, all the solidity. Swollen, bruise-blue veins extend under your eyes, almost like… like roots or something. You swallow, and sit back into your chair.

It’s getting worse. Whatever’s happening to you is getting worse.

“So…” Soames eyes you with no small degree of hesitation. “If I take you where you want to go, you won’t hand Tildie over?”

just a word to the wise for folks who want to extort money off of this man:

1) play this right and we have a safe place to drop off people for a short time before moving them again, and he wont say a damn word.

2) the blonde phantom agency will give us our regular pay when we explain the situation, we solved the case. That cash is already ours.

Yeah, she probably thinks we're dead, so we need to ease her into the fact that we're not or she'll panic. Maybe have him call her, say something like "No, the detective's fine, we talked things out and he's pointing us to someone that can get us in contact with an expert" or something.
>>
>[X] Yes. Maybe you can work something out with the Blonde Phantom.

No. No, says your inner Creeper. Take more. Demand more. You could – you could just take and take and take, until there’s barely a scrap left to be lifted. You know a golden opportunity for blackmail when you see one, and this is more like solid platinum. Or diamond. Or maybe that stuff Captain America’s shield is made of, virium or whatever. Point is, you could easily bleed this guy dry.

“Not exactly.” You sigh. JJ, the good boy. “I wouldn’t have handed her over anyway. You’re giving me a ride because your wife shot me and you were gonna bury me. But… she can’t stay locked down there forever. It’s not healthy.”

He nods sadly.

“I know. We just didn’t know what to do. We were hoping it might get better, that she might learn to control it…”

Sounds like a pipe dream to you. How exactly do you learn to control a power like Tildie’s?

“Well…” He pauses, guiding the car round a sharp turn. “Where are you going?”

>[X] Hellions.

You know, you’re not even really sure where you are. You know it’s not anywhere you want to be, though, and last you checked Julian was running on a short fuse. It kinda irks you that you can’t just pop in with the Blonde Phantom (come to think of it, would anyone even be in their office? It’s pretty late), but you have… you have part of your soul tied up in the thing with Creeper. You cannot afford to be late.

You rustle about for the address, fully expecting Mr. Soames to have no idea where it is, but apparently all cars have GPS now and he just punches the street in. Neat.

The car ploughs on through the night. You find yourself slowly but surely settling in, letting the leather of the seat fold in around you, letting your arms relax and your chest untighten.

“After you’ve dropped me, you need to talk to the Agency.” You say, after giving some thought to the matter of Tildie. Frankly, you have no idea how to deal with her problem. Hopefully someone under Ms. Phantom’s payroll does. “Hopefully… hopefully they can get you in touch with someone better suited to help you.”

He nods, still eying you a little nervously. You guess you did show him a lot of fang back there.
>>
what is our photo charge at Crusty?
>>
>(2/2)

It’s a long ride. Slowly but surely, you watch as the world becomes more familiar, the huge, looming shadows on the horizon lining up into recognizable patterns. Everything gets a little smaller, a little darker. The streets get worse. Everything gets worse.

Eventually, he pulls up opposite a large, fenced-off property deep into the lower spectrum of Queens. It looks normal enough – actually looks kinda like an old department store or something. The grounds outside are all loam, strewn with unchecked patches of grass and assorted weeds. Looks like there’s a garage to one side, though nobody’s parked in there. You can’t see anyone patrolling the outside.

“This it?”

You nod. Should be.

Reminding him to check in with the agency, you step out of Mr. Soames’ car. He thanks you for keeping your mouth shut, despite all the… all the various things that have happened… and soon enough he’s little more than a set of rapidly-disappearing taillights.

That said, this building's likely going to go down without that happening because this is a message against Creeper.

He has met X-Men. He hasn't really gotten super close to them.

His clone, however, is another matter. Kaine Parker (Scarlet Spider) is on the main X-Men team. Everyone assumes it's Spider-Man's dad or his big brother, due to him being aged at an accelerated rate, and thus lots of people think Spidey is a mutant.

>[X] Smell around for the Hellions.
>[X] Call Laura. And Lucas.

Fishing out your cheap-ass phone, you call Laura’s number, sniffing a little absently at the air. You don’t have much time here – gotta figure out there the Hellions are and get this show on the road.

Almost immediately, the dial tone gives way and you hear her voice on the other end of the line.

“Johnathan.” She pauses, a brief commotion transpiring a little beyond the receiver’s capability to transmit discernable sound. “Lucas was wondering when you would return.”

Yeah, you guess as much.

“Right…” You knead your fingers over your skull. How do you explain this shit? “Things got complicated. I’m at the address now. I’ll… I’ll try to slow down the Hellions, give you some time to get over here. Um… could you, I dunno, tell Lucas that I didn’t intend for this to happen.”

There is a brief silence.

“I can.” She responds, eventually.

“Thanks.”
>>
>(2/2)

Stowing the phone away, you redouble your efforts to locate the Hellions, stalking along the sidewalk and feeling very glad that it’s late and nobody’s around to stare at your weird sniffing (sometimes you catch yourself licking the air, too). It kinda wigs you out a little that you appear to be in a mostly residential area – you were expecting something a bit more industrial. Factories and stuff. Instead, the street opposite Creeper’s secret funhouse is lined by short, squat houses. Weird. Weird and unnerving and totally unexpected. But you guess that’s Creeper in a nutshell.

It doesn’t take you long to catch a whiff of Julian’s aftershave. He clearly applies it with gusto.

You make your way along the street until you reach a cross in the road. A little further away from Creeper’s place, on the opposite street, three silhouettes linger near the curb. One smells of Julian. The others, you don’t recognize, but as you draw closer you see that one is a tall, well-toned guy – probably the same age as Julian – with long dreads and a strapping set of camo pants. The other is a lanky chick with tanned skin and brutally short hair. She’s covered in tattoos and, if her sense of dress is any indication, still thinks Hells Angels are cool.

She spots you coming and nudges Julian, who glances in your direction.

“Cutting it a little close.” He notes, as you approach. “These guys are Brian”– the guy offers to shake your hand –“and Solana.” The girl doesn’t. She just nods.

Guy has a strong handshake.

“Hey, man, nice to meet you.” He smiles warmly, and maybe a little wryly. “Hope Jules hasn’t been giving us a bad rep with you.”

Hey… this guy seems nice. Cool, even. Is he really friends with Julian?

“I’ve put up with worse.” Ain’t that the truth. You’re pretty sure Layla could give Julian a run for his money in the field of generally being a butt. You turn to ‘Jules’. “Anyway, yeah, I got shot on the way here.” At this point you feel the need to gesture down at your torn and bloodied jacket. “Mind if I take a quick look inside the building before you level it?”

Julian’s eyes linger on your frayed garments a moment. “Yeah, but you best be out by”–

–“The time Solana unloads, right?” Brian finishes the sentence for him, delving into his pants for a phone. “One sec, lemme drop my number on you, so you can give us a bell when the time’s right. You don’t wanna be in there when Solana does her thing.”

Cool and dependable. You quickly exchange numbers, a slightly annoyed Julian watching the interchange from the sidelines.

“So, uh…” You glance over at the less talkative of the two new mutants. “…What can you guys do?”

“You haven’t told us everything you can do yet.” Interjects Julian.

Brian shrugs, still smiling a little. “He has a point.”

Solana – her eyes flaring up like tiny suns – just raises a set of long fingers, a bright, hot light pulsing under her skin. Palpable waves of heat roll off her, and the air starts to crackle a little, everything suddenly smelling a little bit wrong. For a second before she switches off the power, you feel a little sick.

“Sol doesn’t speak much English.” Says Brian, a little apologetically.

“Fair enough.”

Can’t fault the girl for not being 100% on her second language. Or third or… whatever English is to her. You also wouldn’t want to argue with her, ever. There’s something about her silence that rubs you the wrong way – you think you can feel just the slightest spark of that weird pre-emptive lightning you’ve come to rely on, like simply being around her is moderately dangerous. And that power, whatever it was, seemed flashy.

No, you will most certainly not be demanding more from ‘Sol’.

You glance back at Julian.

“Laura’s coming by. She’ll have a friend with her. Try not to scare them off or whatever.”

He grins broadly. “Don’t worry, you don’t have to convince me to spend time with your pretty little sociopath. Girl certainly has a Silence of the Lambs sort of hotness about her.”

That gets the hair on the back of your neck standing up slightly. You ignore it and stalk off into the night, towards Creeper’s overly large mystery box. You just about catch Brian jokingly asserting that Julian is a terrible human being before you scrub yourself out of visibility and turn the corner, making your way across the street.

You scale the fence easily, a combination of freakish mutie strength and the stickiest stickyfingers getting you on the other side in no time. From the outside, you can see that the main building has one proper entrance (a big, excessively padlocked pair of doors), and probably two floors, a set of windows set high into the walls. The garage on one side must lead further in somehow, too.

Still not seeing anyone strolling around. There aren’t even any cameras, as far as you can tell.

You know what? The architecture is all wrong here. It’s all a bit… IKEA? Nothing really screams out at you that dirty deeds are being done within. You suppose that’s the point really, but this place is seriously aggressively normal. It’s not even appropriately dishevelled and grimy.

Whatever. You sweep your thermal vision over the grounds, picking up no traces of life – just cold, stark shades of blue. Next up is your ears, you guess. You trot over to the nearest wall and place your ear up against it, closing your eyes.

Everything’s quiet. You get the distant, coronal hubbub of NY – the shouts, the sirens, the tires – but nothing from inside. Just the steady hum of the electrics. So, you guess you at least know the place has power.

Seeing as there appears to be no-one remotely alive within a grounds, you feel just about safe enough to go for the front entrance, tearing away the padlock with casual ease and heaving the heavy iron doors open. Inside… inside looks very much like the interior to a hospital. So much so, actually, that you start to imagine that nightshade smell you tend to pick up from them. You’re faced with a large, squeaky-clean room dominated by a set of sparse tables – the kind of things you’d expect to find in a cafeteria or somewhere. There’s a set of stairs winding up one side, and on the far end of the room another door leads further into the building.

Everything’s quiet. There’s no noise. No lights. The long, fluorescent strips overhead don’t look like they’d work even if someone did turn them on.

You feel your stomach turn. Something’s about this place isn’t right.

>>
>[X] Go further on at ground level.

You creep tentatively across the room, reaching out to slide your finger along one of the tables. Dust, but not much dust. You don’t think anyone’s been lounging around here for any length of time, but, just the same, doesn’t seem like the place is exactly deserted either. You know how quickly dust can build. People must be coming and going from the place on at least a bi-weekly basis to keep it looking like this.

You sweep the walls with your heatvision again, just making sure that no-one’s around before you slip through the door on the other side of the room. It opens out into a corridor running opposite to the entrance you just came through, the way on the right seeming to lead on into what looks like the rear end of the garage. You can see lots of miscellaneous little items scattered about – mops, brooms, drills, tangles of discarded wiring… it all looks like the usual kind of crap that just accumulates in a place over time.

That would imply that the place is relatively lived-in, though. And this… establishment, whatever it is… does not feel lived in.

On the other side, the corridor leads to another doorway. Up ahead it seems like there’s a small kitchen.

>[X] Go through the kitchen.

Hey. Maybe there’s something to eat in the kitchen.

Or maybe not. As you make your way along the neat rows of gleaming, silvery kitchen-stuff, you become acutely aware that the place is mostly untouched. You can’t smell anything like food anywhere. Nothing. The tables are clean and free of dust but they’ve never really been worked at – no little scars in the metal, no stains, no tiny discolorations.

You slide your palm along one surface. Smooth. Utterly smooth. Like it’s been in storage for months.

And there’s no utensils. There are racks up for them, and hooks, but no actual cutlery. No cleavers. No knives. No spatulas, no pans, no dishes, no bowls, no forks, nothing. A little plastic panel, blue-tacked to one wall, catches your eye, and you give it a quick once-over. It’s a cartoonish kitchen-safety manual, apparently designed by and for the ‘Family Home’ community centre.

Some community. You doubt any of these ovens have ever fed anyone. You doubt many of them have even been switched–

A thought strikes you. You check around, confirming that pretty much everything electrical is indeed switched off. But you know you heard it, earlier, flowing through the walls. So something in the building is getting juice.

You close your eyes, pressing close to one wall. It’s cold – stings a bit. Lengthening your breath, you try to eliminate as much of your own internal static as possible.

Everything pours in. You get little snatches of stuff from far away, things you just have to push past. And then you find it, the pulse that flushes through the building’s plaster flesh. It lights up in your sensorium, first a spark, then a spider of flashing, flailing light, then a web, and a mesh, and a net… a criss-crossing dance of tiny, humming wires, each one of them barely speaking above a fraction of a whisper.

There’s more of it than you firs assumed. Some of the lines go upstairs, some trace their way at odd intervals through this level, though you’ve no idea where they’re terminating.

But most of it – almost all of it – goes straight down. Down into the ground. Into the earth.

Suppressing a moderate case of the heebie jeebies, you fumble out your phone, giving Brian a quick call.

“Hey.” His voice is low. He has the good sense to keep it down, even over the phone. “You alright in there?”

“I’m fine.” You whisper back. Aside from some slight chills, you’re fine. “I just – I think I found something. All the power in here seems to be flowing downstairs. Pretty much nothing up here is even plugged in.”

“Right…”

“Yeah, so, I’m thinking this whole building is just a scab on top of something else. Laura there yet?” You hope Laura’s there. You really hope Laura’s there.

“Nah, sorry. Could be pretty crowded on the subway right now.”

Yeah. Yeah, you guess they’d be taking the trains. No stupid scales or pointy elf ears for Mutant Control to single out.

“Alright. No prob, no prob…” You hold your breath a moment. What next, exactly? “…I’m gonna check it out quickly. I’ll call if you guys are needed.”

“Cool. Be safe, guy.”

You hang up, shuffling the phone way (and double checking that it’s on silent, just to be extra super sure).

Creeping back out of the kitchen, you make a pretty safe assumption that the garage is not going to have basement access, and make your way into the left wing of the building. You’re a little disappointed to find that the corridor just leads on to a small, relatively barebones office. There’s a computer and desks and stuff, but like everything else here, it’s all without the peripherals – no plugs in the back, no paper in the printer, no files in the cabinets. It’s all for show.

Christ, this place is a pit of rancid nothing. It’s all fucking nothing. Reminds you of a human with all the important bits pounded out, all the small additions that turn a sack of meat and bone and circulatories into a living, thinking thing. There’s literally nothing of actual use in the whole room. Nothing of note. Nothing that stands out, or makes the place feel real. Nothing but the skeleton.

Clicking your tongue in annoyance, you step off the carpet, heading –

Wait.

You look down. Carpet. It’s big and fizzy and mostly red, adorned along its edges with long strips of abstract patterns. Looks vaguely like an actual human addition. You shift your weight experimentally, and feel the floor bow inwards – just very slightly – underneath it, the plaster or whatever it is sighing almost imperceptibly.

Your heart stops for a second, and you feel your breath flutter in your lungs.

You fling the carpet aside, revealing a very obvious, square indentation in the floor. There’s a little handle set into one side, which you grip down on, heaving.

The passage opens, revealing a flight of unadorned concrete steps. They veer down into a long, miasmic black.

Right. If I recall correctly, someone asked me in the first thread what the X-Men lineup is in this universe.

Basically, the X-Men are organized more like a guerrilla army here. They don’t have one team, they have lots of teams that sometimes switch out members due to convenience. Though JJ would know almost none of these people by name, the teams that have shown up most publicly, especially to pitch in with fighting guys like Kang and Doctor Doom, are:

Scott Summers (Cyclops) (Leader)
Emma Frost (White Queen)
Hank McCoy (Beast)
Kaine Parker (The Scarlet Spider)
Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler)
Poitr Rasputin (Colossus)

Ororo Munroe (Storm) (Leader)
Ariel (Ariel)
Rachel Summers (Marvel Girl)
Charlie-Cluster 7 (Fantomex)
Amara Juliana Olivians (Magma)
Serafina (Serafina)

Others that are less prominent but are on X-Men teams or work with them include, Clarice Ferguson (Blink), Betty Braddock (Psylocke), Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), Josh Foley (Elixir) Longshot (Longshot), Jean-Paul Beaubier (Northstar), Bobby Drake (Iceman), Jean-Marie Beaubier (Aurora), Illyana Rasputin (Magik), Gaveedra-Seven (Shatterstar) and many, many more.

Because the stomach generally doesn't change during shapeshifting, but Mystique has changed from woman to man frequently so I'm not sure if the "malleable-ness" of it is a factor.

The only reason to say that they don't function in a work of fiction is to avoid people shouting about perversion and immortality.

I'm kind of disappointed in getting strength. I wanted to stay with the stealth motif. JJ is supposed to be the underdog. How can you be the underdog when you can bench press a buss. Marvel doesn't actually have that many characters that are stronger than JJ is now.

It's ruined my whole image of JJ.

So we just have to steal the sun lamp and a power outlet?

Just plain old 616. Plus a few slight tweaks.

>Just plain old 616.

Granted, I haven't read much of him other than the first appearance, but why not 1610?

I wanna see him use his magic.

We need to make hobo armor ASAP. Grab nearest solid sewer/manhole cover, and stick the rebar in it as handle.
Comon, it would give us steel-ish, bluet/knife resistant shield, that still lets us shock people, for cople minutes of work. Not the best ting we can get, but fastest. Layer 2 to 4 manhole cowers, for stopping all projectiles. We can lift it.
Also can we tear out chunks of concrete now?

immense strength gets evened out by our crackbitch though.
I reckon that we will rarely get to actually use super strength because of all the fucking nat 1s

>>32475436
Then there's the stealthiest of utility uses.

This is exactly the shit I was trying to avoid by voting against strength. Fucking murderhobos are going to try to solve every problem with strength like some retarded alpha male caveman.
