Welcome ladies and gentlemen of the world to the tale of Eric Smith. Fledgling adventure, and poorly possessed.

Yes! This young man has had the poor luck of being possessed by none other than a "Wraith". Cold, calculating, and envious of others who have maintained the gift of life.

Luckily you have found a temporary solution which involves alcohol. Lots, and lots of alcohol. A more permanent solution could be found in the "City of Science and Independence!" A.k.a: Zwolla. You've never been to the city yourself, but the things you have heard from the Church's propaganda indicates that everything is unpleasant there. But it beats going to the holiest of holy cities in Avassa(Yes the church lands are called this), and walking up to a priest and asking if they are skilled with exorcism.

Moving on though. You have passed through the first few villages and towns. Opting to go the long way around and not risk the off chance that someone will recognize you or that you'll wrong into an overly studious paladin or worse, an inquisitor.

Word has already begun to spread from Zwolla about an enigma they call the "burning man". The people still haven't put two and two together to find out who exactly was the man-who-was-on-fire-screaming-through-the-streets, and hopefully they never will.

Your debacle caught the attention of a paladin the following morning and later the inquisition. No doubt they want information about burning man, and the thought that these dangerous holy men could be literally hot on trail is what's causing you to get up early in the morning, and sleep late in the night.

Your luck has held out well for now,but not for long

The path you chose to walk today was an open dusty road. It's part of the main path to a major town, but there should be some sort of side path an hour or so ahead that'll allow you skip past the town. You have enough rations for two more days of travel, and hopefully you'll find a small village off the hidden path. Otherwise you'll have to survive off game for the next couple of days, and you know from experience that catching game without proper traps can be difficult.

"Hello there!" A loud yell is heard from behind you.

You spin around with your hand on the hilt of your sword, ready to draw at a moments notice. Too your surprise it seems to have come from a man leading a merchant carriage a bit of a distance away. He must have a very strong voice to reach you from here.

You don't wish to raise anymore suspicion so you stay put and wait for the man to reach you.

He stops his vehicle besides you, causing the goods on the roof of the carriage to shuffle a little to the front. From his high seat the strange man gives you a smile. "Hail lad!" He laughs. "A bit of a hot day to be traveling alone, eh?"

The mans friendliness is infectious and your hand drops from the hilt of your blade, and you adopt a more friendly pose. "Who're you?" You try your best to not sound intimidating or overly paranoid to the man, but he simply laughs it off.

"Aye, the name is Leonard Grant!" He boasts loudly. "The greatest merchant the world has ever known!"

"Oh really?" A sweet chuckle comes from the inside of the carriage. "Then why hasn't anyone ever heard of you before?"

"Hey!" Leonard sounds a bit hurt, but he quickly repairs his damage ego. "This young lad looks like he hails from some no named village no one as ever heard before!"

"Ouch." You cringe as his words hit a bit to close to home.

"See?" He looks inside his carriage, and only a giggle is returned. "Anyways!" He changes the subject back to you.
>>
>>32480295
"You look a bit pale lad." His voice carries serious concerns. "Why don't you ride with me and my bodyguard until we reach town. "There's enough room for you in her back there." He points a thumb to the inside of his black carriage.

You're taken aback by the mans generosity. "I have no gold to pay you for your kindness though."

Your stated fact is quickly laughed off. "No need to worry about coin lad." He then points to your sword. "You're armed and I bet you know how to use it just as well. The roads have been getting dangerous lately with bandits, cultists, and who knows what else! An extra pair of hands to protect my cargo can go a long way. This'll be a you scratch my back I scratch your back kind of deal." He then stretches a hand out. "So, what do you say? Deal?"

You take a hold of his hand and shake it.

The smiling merchants smile gets even wider. "Excellent!" He shakes your hand more enthusiastically than you, causing your arm to flail about uselessly in his surprisingly powerful grip. "Oi, Mia!" He thankfully lets go of your hand and sits up again. "Make room for one more. You got this swell fella to help you with your job."

"And a hellishly boring job it is." The feminine voice mocks, and the door to the carriage swings outward. "Get inside new kid. It'll be another 3-4 hours until we reach the town that Leonard wants to sell his 'exotic' wares."

"And they truly are exotic!" Leonard yells as you step inside. "The finest items herald from the far East beyond the jungle archipelagos! Curved steel swords folded one thousand times! Exotic miniature trees you can grow in your house! Exotic spices! Fine smelling incenses!" He continues to droll out several uninteresting facts about his wares. It doesn't interest you, but it could be interesting for the wealthy elite.

"So, you're the man of the hour huh?" You look inside the carriage and find a woman sitting on bench accompanied by a variety of bouncing clanking wares. She wears a chain shirt with a few studded leather pieces here and there to protect her exposed body parts. A well worn quarter staff rests upright besides her, quietly rolling with the motion of the now moving carriage.

She silently indicates an open space for you to sit across from her, and you gratefully take the seat. Resting your haggard legs from several days of walking.

"Now normally Leonard likes to exaggerate things..." The woman speaks. "But he is rather spot on with you, never have I seen a boy so pale before..." She leans forward and studies with her curious hazel eyes. You were about to sputter out a retort, but the woman laughs lightly and leans back. "Ah, you don't have to tell me. Everyone has an unpleasant story." She then gives you a grin.
>>
>>32481083
"Instead~ What brings you to this little piece of 'Blessed Ava's Earth?'" She speaks in a deeper voice to indicate she is speaking the words of someone else. "Damn all those priests advertising." She sighs and leans her head back. "Glad I left I clergy."

"Sounds like you have a past." You pick up on the word clergy. Could she have been a nun once?

"Ah, ah, ah, ah." The woman you believed to be called Mia waggles a finger at you. "No past talkies. Instead, lets ask each other why we are going to this fine town of Vinter. I'll start." She then places a hand on her modest chest. "I'm doing some bodyguard work for Leonard until we reach Vinter. Apparently there are some jobs for some adventurers there." She then points to you. "So why're you coming to Vinter. Job, the sights, or just passing through?"

>Just passing through.

"Just a traveler passing through." You say lazily. "What are the sights around Vinter?"

Mia clucks her tongue. "Hmm, well there's the Tower of Apostates. It's where all the mages, sorcerers, and wizards go to be properly educated. Sort of ominous don't you think?"

"A bit." You nod.

"Then there's the Dragons Hoard. Apparently that tavern serves the best ale on this side of the country."

"Eh, I got better." You fondly pat the gourd dangling next to you. Bear fucker has been a godsend to quiet the Wraith or at least cause it to exert itself greatly to get a casual word across. Though it may be wise to get a refill if you can get the dosh.

"Sure it is..." Mia rolls her eyes and chuckles. "Now that's all I know from word of mouth, but I bet there is more to see once we reach there."

"What about the job?" You ask about the next subject.

"Oh, interested?"

You shrug nonchalantly. "I'm a little strapped for cash currently, and I'd like to refill my pockets before continuing on my journey."

"Well money is always good." Mia nods sagely. "As for the job. I have no idea."

"Really?" you raise an eyebrow. "You know nothing about the job?"

"Yup. The advert said to be strong, and go to Vinter for further details." She crosses her arms. "It's suspicious as all hell, but the pay is really dam good. Far better than being a bodyguard for an eccentric merchant."

"How much are they giving?" You raise up your gourd and begin to take a sip of the strong drink.

"Hundred gold pieces, each."

"What?!" You nearly choke on your ale. "That's enough to set a peasant for life!"

Mia nods knowingly. "Which is why it's attracting a lot of people, church folk, and bandits. Main reason why I took this side job as a bodyguard. Nothing wrong with making a little side cash in case this goes way over my head."

"But a hundred gold coins..." You scratch your chin. This sounds way to suspicious.

"Sounds fishy, I know." Mia voices your thoughts.

"What do you think the job would roughly be?"

"Most likely it'll involve killing someone or something in the nearby forest. But I guess the money is used to motivate people to stay on the job."

You nod in agreement. "Yea, I guess."

"Still interested?" The warrior woman pulls out a small water canteen and takes a swig. "I won't blame yah for leaving."

"Eh, I'll think about it. I'm trying to take in all the sights in country before autumn hits."

"Aye, autumn and winter are not good seasons to travel in." She then snaps her fingers. "Oh! I forgot to ask. What's your name?"

"Eric, Eric Smith." You stretch out a hand.

"Mia Fulrose." She stretches out her hand to shake yours. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Eric."

"As am I." You smile, and Mia returns it with her own.

The next hour involves you and Mia engaging in simple small talk. "Hey, why did we stop?" You notice the shaking of Leonard wares suddenly stop. "Are we here already?"

"No." Mia's voice becomes low and serious. "We would have heard people. It's quiet." She grabs her staff and steps out of the carriage, and you soon follow. "What's going on Leo?" She turns up to her boss driving the carriage.

"That." Leonard points ahead.

Five men are ahead of the carriage blockading its path with a large fallen tree. They are all brandishing a variety of lethal weaponry but seem to be lightly armored. "Good evening gentlemen!" The lead man, a particularly fat one speaks. "I see you are holding onto some precious cargo. Would you mind if you'd..." The bastard smacks his lips. "surrender some of your gear," He then eyes Mia. "And your woman." They were obvious demands, not questions.

Mia scowls. "Like hell I'm going to be taken in by some fat bastard."

You have already dropped you pack on the ground, and have drawn your own weapons. "Well... you were complaining about there being a lack of action." You prod her.

"Shut up." She hisses at you.

"Be careful what you wish for~" You say sing song.

"Shush, both of you." Leonard ends your taunting. "I'd prefer if we could all live through this." He jumps off his carriage seat and walks forward, giving reassuring pats on his two horses. "Hello there!" Leonard calls out to the bandits. "My name is Leonard Grant, and I am a famed merchant who-"

"Aye shut it!" A masked bandit jeers from the back of its motley crew. "Just give us your goods, and we'll leave yah be you ponce."

The lead bandit growls something fierce at the shouting man, and he soon quiets down. He then turns around to reveal a yellow smile. "And what the great Leonard Grant have with him?" He speaks in a mocking tone and bows. Earning a few snickers from the rest of his troupe.
>>
>>32483262
Leonard purses his lips in annoyance. "Like I said before. I am a great merchant who hails from the great-"

"I do not care for your pathetic past, weakling." The fat bandit snarls. "I only care for your goods. So give them to me, and I may just let you live."

The merchants eyes light up. "Oh! It's my goods you wish to know about?"

"Yes!" The bandit leader throws up his hands and yells in frustration. "Give me your goods and I won't kill you!"

"Well, I have a variety of goods for you fine gentlemen to have." Leonard smiles, but it isn't the warm, kind smile from before. It's cold and malicious. "I have a variety of mundane goods for your mud houses." His hand dives into a bag attached to his belt and he pulls out a silver candlestick. He then casually tosses it over his shoulder, landing at your feet. "I also have some gold, for your spending needs." He pulls out a bag of gold coins and jingles them enticingly. The bandits eyes sparkle with glee, and the bandit leader holds out an open hand for Leonard to toss it to him.

"That is good, Mr. Leonard, but we are such poor, poor folk." The bandit leader puts a hand to his chest and acts physically hurt. "Do you have anymore for us good folk?"

"Of course!" Leonardo still keeping his cold smile. Tosses the bag of gold pieces to the leader. "I also deal with..." He suddenly pulls a loaded one-handed crossbow from his bottomless bag. "Weapons." And fires it.

The bolt sails true and just before the oblivious leader could react, it embeds itself in the shoulder of the bandit leader. He screams in agony, and clutches the wound. Letting the gold bag hit the graveled earth. Splitting open to reveal that they were nothing but wooden chips.

The fat man looks at his wound, then down to the broken bag of fake coins, and then to Leonardo with untold fury of a man scorned. "You'll pay for that!" He screams with hate and pulls the crude mace from his belt. "Kill them all!"

Shield raised you charge at the first bandit.

A gangly man who wields nothing more than chipped iron sword. He swings the blade madly at you, hoping to find an opening to break through your current defense. But your defense holds, and just as your opponent raises his rusty blade to bring it downward onto your head. You raise your shield and deflect the strike and the blade goes flying through the air landing on the hard earth a few feet away. But before the bandit can react, your own blade finds itself deeply embedded into his stomach. There is no scream, but a surprised cough, blood dripping from the mouth, and steadily vacant eyes tells you that this man is gone. You casually kick the dying man off your blade.

"Easy prey." The wraiths voice begins to emanate in the back of your mind once more. "Kill the fools who so recklessly waste life. Such life should be given to me!"

You turn around with your bloodied blade to see the situation of the battle. Two bandits have begun to double-team Mia. One wielding a crude spear, and another wielding a wooden club. The one with the spear attempts to jab at any openings he finds, while the other one swings his club recklessly at the woman to hopefully break her guard. Though Mia is being pushed back by the two. She is doing a good job deflecting or redirecting attacks so they hit nothing but air, or don't penetrate her armor.

Leonardo is currently facing off with another sword wielding bandit with a very foppish rapier. He easily ripostes any attacks directed at him, and every cut that he inflicts on his opponent, he also sends a witty insult his way. Making the bandits blood boil, goading him into more reckless attacks which Leonardo easily sidesteps with deft grace.

The bandit leader still has not joined the fight and has begun to scream at his men to fight harder while he attempts to tear out the bolt in his arm.

Mia is the on who is the most trouble right now. Leonardo is easily whittling down his opponent, and the Bandit Leader is preoccupied with the bolt in his arm to properly fight.

You rush to the currently occupied Mia. She seems to have finally gained some ground against the bandits and has begun to get a couple hits on the one wielding the club, but length of the other bandits spear is still keeping her at bay.

"Go for the spear," The wraith speaks again. "Disable the reach and the girl can easily deal with the one with the club."

You heed the wraiths advice and aim for the one with the spear. He's to focused on Mia, and doesn't even see you coming. Your blade easily pierces the thin leather protecting his back. The man screams in surprise when he sees the tip of your blade protruding from his chest.

"No! Brother!" The man with the club turns around in time to see his brother die by your blade. "Y-you bastard. I'll make you pay!" Tears in his eyes he charges at you while you casually pull your blade out.

"Heads up you bastard!" Mia yells and the tip of her staff slams into his chin. Blunt weapon and chin connect with a loud crack. Momentum carries him a few feet before crumpling to the hard earth unconscious.

"Nice hit." You compliment Mia as you pull out a cloth to clean your blade.

"...Thanks..." She takes a breath and gives you an odd look.

"And that's what you get, plebian." You look to find Leonardo standing before his exhausted opponent triumphantly. "No one dares to challenge the great LEONARDO." He puts a finger to his lips and kisses it before pointing to the sky to some unseen audience.

"He has a lot of pride in that thick skull of his." The Wraith grumbles.

"Where's the bandit leader?" You look around for more targets to wet your blade.

"Seems he ran, thankfully." Mia runs a hand through her short hair.

"I guess we are done here then." You finish wiping the blood of your sword and then put it into its sheath.
>>
>>32486772
"Indeed we are!" Leonardo walks up to the two of with a happy grin. The only thing marring his handsome facial features is a thin sheen of sweat. No blood, dirt, or dust has gotten on his clothes besides his tailored shoes. "I must congratulate you Eric Smith." He puts a hand on your shoulder. "You have done more than I hoped and I am glad you have decided to come with us." With a wide smile he lets go of his shoulder to look at the carnage. "What do we do with these remaining bandits though?" He rubs his chin in thought.

"The weak overpower the strong." The Wraiths voice begins to beat in head like a drum. "The strong have the right to live! Not these, pathetic weaklings." The Wraith then laughs. "Kill them so I may feed, and we shall grow stronger!"

You don't answer immediately, but you return to the carriage, and take the gourd of bear fucker from your seat. You pop open the lid and drink in the hard hitting alcohol deeply. The voice of the wraith begins to wash away as inebriation takes hold.

"What are you doing?" Leonardo looks at you strangely.

You move the gourd from your lips and put the lid back on. "Just a little victory drink." You chuckle. "By the way we should let those guys live. It's like they can't do any harm right now."

"Or even better, turn them in to the authorities at Vinter!" You can see Mia's eyes turn into gold coins. "There could be a bounty on them!"

"Hah hah!" Leonard points a finger to the sky. "The great Leonardo and his lovely bodyguards save the day by ridding the menace of bandits. Delivering them to the proper authorities for a due reward."

"Yea, but how are we going to transport these two guys?" You indicate to the filled carriage of goods.

"Well that is simple dear Eric." He gives you a wolfish grin. "Rope. Lots of rope."

-

"And that is why two bandits are currently strapped to the sides of that carriage like game animals sir." You speak to the gate guards who look at you in utter disbelief. "That's the story really." You shrug.

One of the guards shakes his head and chuckles. "Well if that ain't the darnedest thing I have ever seen." He then knocks the other guard out his stupor. "Just give us your papers, and the guards will take care of the rest."

True to his word. Leonardo showed them his legitimate papers and you all passed through the gates unscathed. Soon after, more guards came to scene and relieved the bandits from your carriage. They were even nice enough to drop off a bag of ten gold coins for your trouble. Leonardo does not take the gold for unsaid reasons so you and Mia split the gold between each other, and to your surprise again. Leonardo pays you a small pittance of two gold for being such a good bodyguard!
>>
>>32488557
It isn't much really, but the fact that Leonardo payed for your trouble is kind enough as it is. It'll pay for tonight's lodging for sure. And then you'll check up on that job with Mia in the morning.

Even with nightfall fast nearing. The town is still bustling with activity. Merchants are replaced by lamp lighters, town yellers replaced with lascivious whores, and other nightly, towny things.

Mia and Leonardo go to some home class tavern courtesy of you know who, and you simply decide to check out the Dragons Hoard Tavern. It should be cheap enough for one night.

After saying your goodbyes you ask for directions to the tavern, and after a few minutes of wandering you find it near the outskirts of the town. It has nestled itself in the corner of the stone town walls. Out of place, but not out of mind.

You open the heavy wooden door to reveal the joyous drunken masses enjoying tankards of fine mead. As soon as you walk in, a table is flipped over and you see a man cursing at a dwarf. The dwarf simply smiles, and knocks him out in one punch.

You weave your way past the ensuing bar brawl, and head to the counter where a heavily muscled man laughs at the sight of his patrons punching each other out. "Ah!" He takes notice to you. "Welcome to the Dragons Hoard! Home to the finest ale on this side of the country" He says it all with a broad grin. "Now what dah yah need?"

"Room for one please, just for tonight." You drop a gold coin on the table.

The owner takes the coin. "Would you like a warm meal to go with that as well, and some cool ale?"

"In the morning please." You heave a loud yawn. "I'm to tired to eat right now."

The muscled man nods sagely. "Of course." He then puts his hand underneath the counter and takes out a room key. "Room ten will be your place for the night."

You voice your thanks and take the key and head up the stairs to the second floor. You locate your room and open the door to find it to be pretty modest.
