Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread, you erected a tomb to avoid a Centurion's curse and investigated an ancient generator.

Profectus plucks up the various bottles he'd picked out and carries them across from the bar while you approach the glass window and peer down into the chamber below. The floor, as best as you can tell, is stone but you think you can spot a few patches of exposed metal here and there. There might also be something constructed beneath the surface of the magma pool surrounding the generator. You can't quite tell.

Profectus hands off the bottles to you one by one and you stuff them into your cloak. You wonder, absentmindedly, if Ricky has a taste for alcohol. You certainly hope not. You don't want some monster drunkenly screeching into your brain case. What would even happen if Ricky threw up? You banish those thoughts and turn your attention momentarily back to the generator. Glancing up at the crystalline growths spreading across the ceiling through the lens of your magic sight. It glows brightly and, though it may simply be a trick of the light or your imagination, it seems to throb in an almost organic manner.

You cut off the flow of vys to your armor and the ebbs and flows of ambient energy fade away. {Alright, lets check out facility cooling as long as we're down here. Might have something interesting in it.} As the five of you make your way out of the viewing chamber Fulvia pipes up. {It will likely just be the inner workings of the system intended to keep this facility habitable. Judging by the temperature, it is likely broken.}

A short jaunt across the hallway later and you find yourself standing in front of the doorway to the cooling room. Unlike the viewing chamber, this one will not simply open for you and as a result Fulvia is busy digging away at the wires beneath the access panel, rigging them to allow you all entry. When the doors slide open mist seems to billow out around your feet into the hall, though it quickly dissipates. Stepping into the darkened room a single light flares to light on the opposite wall, illuminating a vast machine that takes up the entire wall.

Your armor seems less capable of protecting against cold than it is heat, you note frost already creeping its way across your armored joints and beginning to obscure your vision. Even if it's not capable of cooling the rest of the facility, this machine seems to do a fine job of freezing over this room at least.

>Ask Fulvia if she can fix it.

If the cooling is so damn strong that it makes even the dragons out side the facility *weaker* where we can actually tell. I am down for stealing after we deal with baldev. Don't want the bandit charging at us. while we're sneaking away from a mother dragon.
>>
>>32485290
Same. Even if we can't hatch it, it would make one hell of an omelette.

What if these dragons are actually experiments, and they can only survive down here because they have innate ice magic?
>>
{Can you fix this... uh...} You gesture to the machine, not really sure if it's an AI, or a 'computor' or just a vast collection of pipes filled with cold water. Fulvia looks from you to the machine and then back again. {Perhaps, with time and the proper materials. I would need to first run a diagnostic to determine what is wrong. Then I may need to interface with the machine or crawl inside to make repairs.}

You and Fulvia approach the glowing 'eye' at the center of the machine. Consciously you know it's just a light, but you can't shake the feeling that it's watching you It even seems to follow you across the room. As the two of you reach the machine Fulvia presses down on a panel, causing it to slide away and reveal a small receptacle not unlike the one on the back of Fulvia's neck. {Place me in the machine, I will determine if there is anything I can do.} She pulls her hood back and you pop open the panel that conceals the glowing blue core. You note with a hint of curiosity that small, black spots have formed throughout the crystal, though none are more than a speck at the moment. Worrying.

You pluck the gem out of her body and it slumps lifelessly to the ground. Once placed into the machine the panel slides shut and it the entire room seems to shake for a brief moment before falling still. Even the subtle hum that had filled the room previously has ceased. After several minutes of inaction you're beginning to grow worried, but you'd imagine that Fulvia would contact you if something was wrong. She's more than capable of it, as she's proven in the past.

(1/2)
>>
All at once the machine seems to return to life, churning away with a sort of urgency it lacked before. You hear hissing pipes and the grinding of metal gears from somewhere beyond the vast metal facade, and not a moment later Fulvia contacts you. {The computor regulating temperature was corrupted, not in the delirium sense but simply filled with junk files which hindered its operation. I have cleaned the storage drive. What would you like me to set the facility's temperature to?}

Fulvia's corruption worries me. If we can find a way to cure her while we are down here that's great, but if we can not, we should probably take into account the possibility of her going psycho and remove her core before continuing on and keep it stashed until it is cured.

I am talking about after we get out of this mine of course. We absolutely need her down down here and she shouldn't hopefully be getting corrupted that fast.
>>
>>32486059
She mentioned that we may be able to cure it by entering her core and purging the corruption manually.
>>
>>32486059
We agreed to go to the lake and have her make us go into her world and destroy the shades, and hopefully not damage anything inside her.
>>
>>32486104
If this the plan. We should just send in darzi and some one else. That way we can meditate at the lake. And have some one watch our back/ meditate with us.
>>
>>32485649
would we have bonus for an insigth if we meditated in this extreme cold?
>>
>>32486215
Fulvia said anything damaged/changed in her core could have dramatic affects on her, so i rather personally do this, plus we need to be at the lake since she needs around 100 vys to pull off the move.
>>
>>32486221
If you wanted to meditate using a method that took advantage of ice, then maybe. It would depend on the method. Usually environmental factors won't directly effect meditation rolls.

That wouldn't go towards learning healing magic at 3 insights though.
>>
>>32486221
We should prioritize meditating on healing anon. We are close to getting Grandmaster healing.
>>
{Just make it livable, I'd like to be able to talk without the brooches. At least until we go back out into the rest of the cavern.} There is a short pause, and then Fulvia contacts you once more. {The temperature should be dropping, though it will take several minutes to reach livable conditions.} An idea strikes you as you're approaching the machine to pull Fulvia out. {Is there some way you could set a timer, so that in a couple hours, or maybe a day or so, this place becomes freezing cold?} Fulvia responds promptly. {It would be a simple task to set a schedule in advance and have the temperature dropped drastically at a preset time and date. However, I do not see what this accomplishes.}

She falls silent for a few moments and then pipes up once more. {The timer is set, you may remove me from the machine.} You press down on the same panel Fulvia had earlier and pluck her core from the revealed receptacle. Flipping her body onto its stomach, you place the core back into the framework hidden in the back of her neck and help her to her feet. {I'm fairly certain that these creatures we've seen, the flying lizards, are used to extreme heat. Thus they should be averse to the cold.} As the two of you return to the rest of the party she remarks. {I suppose that would make sense, though depending on how intelligent these creatures are they may simply decide to investigate to see what caused the change.}

Once the party has gathered in the hallway outside of the cooling room, Fulvia shuts the door carefully using metal magic. You're relieved to feel the mask covering your mouth and nose recede into your armor, allowing you to breathe unfiltered air for the first time since exiting the lift. “I am really glad my armor has that function, because it means I'm not incinerated alive and all, but damn if it isn't uncomfortable.” Profectus comments. Chryssa nods in agreement.

Also you can have strength while still being hungry. the whole party is not powered on will alone.
Far as we know we may run into baldev soon. Or something that managed to kill him. Also gives time for Chys to try out her new armor. For tricks. And Give Prof his armor and tell him about his perks. That could make him more useful to us during the fight.
>>
“Say, how long did you set the timer for Fulvia?” She shrugs her shoulders. “I set it for twenty four hours. It should be long enough for us to finish our task down here and return to the surface before it activates.” You nod, and set off towards the last door in this hallway. You round the corner to find yourself faced with a massive bulkhead door standing between you and the Central Chamber. You'd imagine it to be several feet thick, and probably treated to prevent heat seeping into the halls from the generator.

There is no access panel, at least not one that you can see. Approaching the door Fulvia presses down on a round plate in the center of the door and it slides away to reveal a small pad of keys, not dissimilar to the one on the computor you've got stored inside your cloak. Fulvia presses a series of keys and after a few moments the door begins to gradually rise. “What did you do?” Profectus ask, a curious tone to his voice. Fulvia answers promptly. “I simply acknowledged that I understood the risk of entering this chamber unguarded and waived any right I might have to bring legal action against the operators of this facility.”

That's... comforting, you suppose. Not really. On the other side of the room is a small chamber empty save for two large vents on either side of the room. Your party packs in as much as it can, and once everyone is inside Fulvia flips a switch. The bulkhead behind you slams shut while the bulkhead in front begins to open. Immediately a wave of hot air rushes into the room, causing your suit's environmental seals to activate. You can't help but find yourself slightly annoyed, you were so enjoying not having all this crap covering your face.

(1/2)
>>
Once the bulkhead has raised fully you cautiously make your way into the central chamber. Just outside of the door is a metal platform that wraps around the entire room, but the ground beyond the platform seems terribly loose. Like taking one wrong step may send you plunging into the churning magma below. Fortunately it seems as though metal pathways were carved into the stone, though they've become partially covered by black rock over the years. Those must have been the glints of metal you'd seen from the viewport.

As you begin a slow patrol of the outskirts of the facility, something catches your eye. Positioned behind the generator, from the perspective of the viewing chamber, is a tunnel. It's roughly twice as tall and three times as wide as you are. You can't help but wonder where it might lead.

You glance around, looking for a metal platform you could use to get down to the tunnel. It takes you a while, but you eventually find a metal platform that should take you fairly close to the tunnel. You pick your way down slowly, careful not to make a mistep and send yourself splashing into a pool of magma. Your armor's environmental seals are good, but you're not sure if you want to go diving into lava for a swim.

You switch on your magic sight as you approach the mouth of the tunnel, or perhaps it's simply a cave. You suppose it's difficult to tell. Nothing immediately jumps out at you. Of course it's hard to see this close to the generator, the surroundings are absolutely saturated with vys to the point of obscuring your vision. You cut the flow of magic to your armor and instead reach into your cloak, withdrawing your nature staff.

This time when you shine the light towards the cave you're rewarded with a much more clear view of what you might face inside. You see a big patch of green a few meters inside the cave, it's indistinct, but since it's not moving you assume it's just plant life. What sort of plant grows adjacent pools of magma, you're unsure. Sweeping the staff further up the cave you spot a fairly defined head and neck, glowing green under the light of your staff. Continuing even further along it seems to stretch into a massive body... really the thing must be a minimum of fifty feet long, though it's curled up on itself so it's difficult to tell. You're not actually sure how it managed to wedge itself inside this cavern. The only explanation you can think of is earth magic.

As you approach the mouth of the tunnel, a wash of hot air rushes out to greet you. It smells of sulfur and burnt flesh. You're suddenly quite aware of how small you are in comparison to the beast that lies within this chamber. Do you really want to rush in there and risk waking whatever it is, dragon or no? You have plans to enact and jobs to do, you'd really rather not find yourself eaten by some ancient beast a dozen miles from the surface of the Earth.

You turn to the rest of your party, transmitting through the brooches. {Listen, this is going to be dangerous. There is a creature in there larger than most houses and I'm relatively certain it's of the fire breathing, dragon variety. I'm going to proceed alone for now, between my cloak and my magic I ought to be the best equipped to slip in and out unnoticed.} Chryssa speaks up as soon as you're finished. {Mikhael, this is a bad idea. We do not need to steal or see everything this forsaken pit has to offer. If you go in there you will just get hurt and we will be stuck trying to drag you out.}

You shrug your shoulders. {What can I say? It's reckless, and stupid, and liable to get me killed. Just think about it though, Chrys. An actual dragon. Nobody has seen one in thousands upon thousands of years. Who knows, maybe it will even be friendly?} She shakes her head. {That is perhaps the most naive thing you have said in the last hour. In the legends they sacrificed hundreds, even thousands of lives at the drop of a hat simply to conquer the next hill or valley. Why on earth do you think a creature so callous would wish for anything but to advance its own standing?} You smirk, though it's not visible through your mask. {I don't! I simply want to use it to advance my own standing.}

She folds her arms in front of her chest. You're sure if you could actually see her face she'd be glaring at you but fortunately you can't see her face. As you turn to leave the party Profectus sends you kind words of encouragement. {If you die, I call your sword.}

It's a short hop from the metal platform you'd been walking on to the floor of the cavern below. The ground cracks loudly as you land, magma bubbling up from beneath, but you hurry further into the tunnel before it breaks completely and sends you tumbling into the lava below. You draw your cloak tighter around yourself as you proceed deeper into the cavern, careful to stick to the shadows.

After the first few meters you come to a drop, overlooking some sort of river of lava running through the center of the tunnel ,and it is indeed a tunnel. The branch you're in seems to only be an auxiliary exit, or perhaps merely meant to allow heat and ambient vys to propagate throughout the tunnels. If your sense of direction isn't totally shot, proceeding down the right path should take you to the massive creature you saw earlier. You're unsure where the left path might lead. However, there should be something alive somewhere around here. You saw a patch of green a few meters into the cave, but nothing has stood out to you as a plant or animal since you've entered.

You channel vys into your staff, casting its light around the cavern. You search for a short while before spotting the patch of green once more, on a flat plane of stone. You think it's just where you left it, though you suppose it's hard to tell. You approach the spot where the green patch appears to be but, even stepping directly on top of it, you can't seem to detect anything there. Perhaps some sort of mold growth, or stone-like plant?

You crouch down to get a better look, running your hand over the stone. It's warm, you can tell that much even through your armor. It shoes signs of once being cracked but for all you know that could have been ages ago. The green patch itself appears vaguely ovoid, roughly the size of your head, actually probably a fair bit larger but close enough to make it an apt comparison.

You channel some vys into a spell, pressing your palm against the stone just above the green patch and discharging the spell. The ground cracks as the magic deteriorates the stone, and you raise your fist to try and smash the rest of it apart. As your fist hits the stone pain shoots up your arm and if it weren't for the mask covering your mouth, you likely would've cried out. You didn't even manage to break the stone apart. You're suddenly glad nobody was around to see this.

Nothing is broken, fortunately, so you simply channel a little more vys to further weaken the stone. Then you stand up and use the butt of your Nature Staff to break apart the stone. It comes apart easily enough this time, and you find yourself looking down onto what can best be described as a stone egg.

You use your staff to prod it out of the lava it seems to be bathing in. It's fairly larger, in fact larger than you'd thought it was. It's damn near as big as your torso, though not quite that large. You'd expect it to be part of a clutch or at least a nest of some sort, but as far as you can tell it's the only egg buried beneath the rock. Here, at least.

Crouching down you take a moment to inspect it. The shell seems resistant to the heat, and outcroppings of rock have begun to grow around it. The shell itself is obviously organic, though quite hard. You wonder, do eggs need air? It might not be safe to just shove this in your cloak if they do, not to mention you're not sure if it would survive outside of this extreme environment.

>Just shove it in your cloak, if the occupant dies it will make a hearty meal.

You reach down, carefully touching the egg's shell to make sure it's not going to burn you through your armor or something. While slightly uncomfortable to the touch, it's not charring your flesh or anything. You wrap your arms around the base and do your best to lift it, hurting your back in the process. Seriously, this thing is damned heavy. You correct your form and try to lift with your legs, but still you find yourself struggling. This thing must way a hundred pounds, easy.

You let it sit, stretching your back and cracking your neck. Know what? You'll come back later. It's not going anywhere, after all. You turn back towards the tunnel you were facing a moment ago and scale a short drop from the ledge you'd been standing on to the floor below. Down here, it's much more difficult to find shadow to hide in. The river of lava flowing through the center of the room cast everything in a deep, red glow. You find yourself ducking beneath overhangs and sticking to the edges of the tunnel, trying to make yourself small to avoid possible detection.

You proceed down the right pathway for several minutes, occasionally casting paranoid glances over your shoulder for fear of seeing a dragon swooping down to rip open your chest or something. You're starting to realize that this creature you're approaching is even larger than you'd initially thought, because you were viewing it from quite the distance. Though it may have looked only fifty feet long, you're starting to think it may be quite a bit larger than that.

You turn a corner in the tunnel to find yourself staring face to face with a creature roughly the size of a carriage. It's got two wings folded up against its back and it's resting its head on two massive clawed feet. It's curled up into itself, asleep. It's the closest you've been to one of these creatures. This one, compared to the beast up ahead, must just be a baby or at the very least quite young. How didn't you notice this thing with your nature staff before hand? Maybe it's dead...

Alright, I'll need 6 rolls.

The first three will be for getting up to it without disturbing it. Pretty easy since it's asleep, but you won't get the full cloak bonus since you'll be partially exposed. 3d10+9 vs DC 20.

Next set of rolls will be for getting a real good look at it, enough that you could pick out weaknesses. That'll be 3d10 flat vs DC 25.

We all make mistakes, no need to be dicks about it.

Besides, there are equally worse things that can happen, like being trapped underneath a sleeping dragon.

>>32490661
You are such a gigantic faggot. Go lie down under a dragon.
>>
>>32490660

>>
>>32490661
don't worry about it. some people are just massive faggots.
>>
You approach the sleeping dragon carefully, picking your way across stone carefully and avoiding any loose rocks or other possible hazards that might cause noise. Briefly, the dragon stirs and shifts in place, rolling over onto its side to face you. You feel yourself starting to sweat, but that may simply be due to the heat. Fortunately it doesn't wake up. You close the distance and find yourself only a few feet away from a creature long thought lost to mith.

You crouch down to get a real good look at it. Its underbelly seems to be armored by wide interlocking scales, further apart on its neck than on its torso. They appear quite hard, though you suppose you couldn't get a good estimate without stabbing it with something. The rest of its body is composed of thick hide interspersed occasionally with hardened plates. You think the plates may actually be scar tissue of some sort, though you can't be certain.

Most of its body length is dominated by a long tail, spikes partially running down its length. It would probably hurt to get hit by it, but you're more worried about its mouth. This particular dragon appears to have an overbite of sorts, judging by the number of teeth poking out over its lower jaw. Its mouth seems drawn back in a permanent snarl, which doesn't necessarily bode well for its temperament. Growing from its had are long horns, reminiscent of a goat's horns in many ways. Down the middle of its back it has a large, spiked fin. You wonder, between the fin and the egg you found submerged in magma, if perhaps they begin life as amphibians of some sort.

(1/2)
>>
If you had to pick out a weak point on this creature, it would have to be the wings. The membrane is thin and, at least on this creature, perforated and tattered in certain places. Likely the result of previous fights. Still you can't imagine that damaging the creature's wings would kill it. You suppose it would be better to avoid the underbelly as that seems the most heavily armored area. Overall you don't really glean much of use.

You continue on past the sleeping young dragon. It isn't long before you come to a large overhang. Another blast of hot air rushes past you, the stink of sulfur much, much stronger than it was before. Even though your helmet filters the air you breathe, it's still enough to nearly make you gag. Once it passes you cautiously step out onto the platform and look down into the chamber below.

In the center of the room is a massive dragon, easily two hundred feet long from nose to tail. Fortunately, it's curled up on itself and seems rather fast asleep. Surrounding it is a pool of lava, apparently its version of bedding, and a number of large eggs are tucked in close to its abdomen. Curiously each of these eggs is much, much larger than the egg you retrieved. The smallest is as tall as you are and nearly twice as wide. Perhaps you found the runt of the litter, so to speak? Forced to either die or survive on its own, you suppose. Still that's just as well, not like you could really control a creature that large, nor could you carry out one of those eggs.

Glancing from the eggs below to the tunnel behind you, in the direction of the young dragon you'd seen earlier, you come to the conclusion that was merely a hatching. Perhaps only a few months old or a few years at most. Then again, you suppose you don't actually know how quickly dragons grow. Maybe it takes millennia for them to reach the size of the one below, maybe it only takes a few decades. Maybe there is a large degree of sexual dimorphism, with the females being much larger than the males. You simply don't know.
(1/2)
>>
A closer look at the mother itself reveals that those hard outcroppings that covered certain portions of the hatchling behind you have expanded to cover almost the entirety of her hide, though come to think of it you don't actually know it's the mother. It may be male, for all you know. Its wings have also grown thicker and the thin membrane similarly reinforced, on the back at least, by those hard plates.

There is a well used path from the platform you're standing on down to the nest below, though you don't really know why you'd want to enter the nest. There may be other hatchlings down there, ones that are actually awake and which might wake up their mother should you disturb them. On the other hand, it might have some sort of loot stashed away somewhere. Who knows.

Taking into account that anything other than dice in the email field still activates spam protection, this is a recount. As this vote is tied, I will use the roll here: >>32492817 To determine what the result is.

With that in mind, y'all are going down into the nest after all. The DC was not 20 but 25 to get into the nest undetected, meaning that the results of the roll here: >>32492994 would be a Regular Failure instead of a Regular Success.

You step cautiously towards the sloped path down to the nest below. It proves slightly more hazardous than you'd expected, the stone is surprisingly smooth. Almost like it had been shaped by magic, which isn't that far fetched come to think of it. There would be no other way for a creature as large as the massive dragon below to get into this chamber. You wonder to just what extent dragons are capable of magic. Obviously, their reserves would be massive. They're massive creatures. However, you can't quite conceptualize how they would go about actually learning to manipulate magic. You can't imagine a dragon sitting down to be tutored by a master, nor can you see a dragon sitting calmly in class and waiting for instruction. However, magic is not simply something 'innate'. Nothing is born simply able to cast it. At least, nothing you're aware of.

As you're approaching the bottom of the path you feel your foot slip out from under you on the smoothed stone and you very nearly go sliding down the path and directly into the lava below. You desperately channel a burst of vys into your arms, and fortunately it's enough to allow you the speed necessary to grab hold of a stone spike sticking up next to the path. You rest a moment, trying to calm your frantic heartbeat, but then push yourself up and make your way down into the nest proper.

OHHHHHH SHIT

You can see that there are three offshoots from this chamber, besides the one you entered through. The nearest branch, to your left, descends further into the mine. You think you can hear hissing and some sort of guttural grunting from that direction. You're not really sure what it is, but you probably want to avoid it. You think you can vaguely hear a drum beating from the branch to your right, almost directly perpendicular to the opening you entered through. Finally, the last chamber is directly opposite your current position. You might just be imagining things, but the rumbling you'd heard when you first channeled vys into the heart might be coming from that direction.

You slip quietly across the room, stepping over pockets of lava and sticking far away from the giant creature in the center of the room. You very nearly panic when it begins to stir, but fortunately it simply curls up tighter around its eggs, laying a massive clawed hand over them protectively. You know, it would almost be sweet if it wasn't so terrifying. Especially considering that you're probably going to steal one of its eggs, or an egg. You suppose you're not entirely sure it's even this dragon's egg.

After what seems like an eternity of creeping along the wall of the chamber you reach the opening from which the drumming seems to originate. It's a rhythmic, obviously musical beat. Quite infectious, actually. You could dance to this beat. You're surprised to see this chamber actually slopes fairly steeply down into the tunnel below. You actually have to carefully slide down to reach the bottom, and once you do it's quite cool. Still blazing hot of course, but cool enough that your environmental seals release.

The drumming is much louder than you'd initially thought, your armor's seals must have been muffling the sound. There must be dozens of drums being beaten simultaneously, which at the least indicates some sort of intelligence. Enough cognitive ability to organize a drum circle. As you round the next corner you catch a glimpse of a gathering of primitively garbed men and women, most of them wearing either rough robes, loincloths, or shoddy armor. They're gathered around a large statue of a dragon, almost identical to the one you just passed come to think of it. Many of them show signs of mutation or deformity, including scales along their arms, disproportionately large heads, and sharpened teeth.

At the center of the mass, raised up on a pedestal and facing the crowd, is a remarkably normal-looking figure. His fingers have been stained black and some sort of fog is billowing out of his mouth. He's garbed in well made, beautifully decorated silk robes and wears some sort of metal or perhaps treated clay mask. He speaks with a sort of otherworldly weight, though you don't understand the language. It's a series of hissing and grunts as far as you can tell.

You wedge yourself more firmly between the stone pillar you're hiding behind and the wall. You manage to position yourself such that you're fully shrouded in shadow, your cloak covering you in the incorporeal blackness you're now accustomed to. As you turn your attention back to the ritual in progress, whatever it may be, a voice intrudes on your thoughts. {Mikhael? Are you okay? We heard something collapse down there.} It's Chryssa. You're overcome by a deep sense of apprehension at the concept of being trapped down here with cultist and dragons. That would be horrible. {What? Yes, I'm fine. I didn't hear anything. What collapsed?}

There is a brief pause before she responds. {We're not sure, we heard a man scream and then after that there was a brief conflict. Then it ended with the sound of stone collapsing.} Shit, could that have been Baldev? What the hell would he be doing down here? He better not try to steal your damned egg. You're about to respond when your attention is once more drawn to the cult. The black smoke billowing out of the priest's mouth has formed into the rough shape of a dragon. It opens its mouth and speaks in that hissing, grunting language but for some reason you feel as though you can understand it.

It's promising you fortune, power, women. All your heart could desire should you only return its own. It wants you to go forth, search the tunnels high and low for the disembodied organ. Only then will their god be truly awakened, risen to stand proudly beside his queen. Step forward, elf. Step forward and deliver unto his prophet that which is already his. You find yourself stepping out of your hiding place almost without realizing it, your mind focused entirely on the ethereal figure of a dragon rising from the priest's mouth.

>Well, he did promise you money and power and women. May as well.

Whatever infernal language that priest seems to be speaking fills your head, hindering proper thought. The world seems to slowly fade away, until all that seems left in the world are you and the incorporeal dragon's image, burned into your mind. The crowd of savages has vanished, the priest is gone, even the walls have melted away. You walk along a flat black plane towards what you feel may be your imminent death. For a moment, you think yourself lost. You push every ounce of power you can into overthrowing the hold it has on your mind, and still you find yourself compelled to approach.

Still, there is hope.

From the formless void of your mind a figure assembles itself. Its eyes are hollow sockets. Its head is a burnt out husk. Its lips have been sewn shut. Where its nose should be, there is only a hole looking into the void. Even its skin appears to be rotting and deteriorated, discolored yellow and clinging to its skull. It is garbed in tattered clothing and by all rights it looks to be a beggar. However, when it speaks the world seems to listen. Reality warps and twist as though distorted by the weight of what it proclaims.

Two words echo through your skull, seemingly banishing the influence of the long-forgotten, insignificant creature which tried to sway you to its bidding.

{Choose Me.}

You find yourself suddenly at a crossroads. On one hand, the dragon rages impotently. Its words stifled by whatever strange influence this dead god exerts. On the other, you find yourself staring face to face with a being which very nearly killed you. Which attempts to corrupt you. Which wants you as a vessel to bring it forth once more into the world. It is a question of the evil you know versus the evil you don't.
