You are a peasant lad, 18 years of age. Born to a hardworking peasant family in a bustling farming village in the back country of a great empire you are newly a man & feel the itch of destiny.
-
Fate has been kind to you & blessed you with one of the following traits (highest roll decides):

+You are exceptionally strong & tough, you've already made a name for yourself in the village through various feats of physical power/endurance.

+You have a keen mind & a thirst for knowledge. You easily understand things others struggle to grasp. Furthermore an itinerant priest taught you how to read (extremely rare for a peasant).

+You have striking looks & a natural charm. You win friends easily & many of the young womenfolk of the village have eyes for you.

Your mind is sharp as a razor, when you start to think about things, patterns emerge that you can read & understand & little escapes your notice. You have been given the gift of literacy. In a village of perhaps 200 or more souls, the number who know letters can be counted on one hand.
-
It's high summer, the air is warm & the days work is done. What shall you do with yourself?

There are several points of interest in the village (highest decides):

+The Chieftains hall: The chieftain & his family reside here. He gathers the elders for counsel on issues of governance & justice.

+The Tavern: Little more than a thatched barn with a few tables, a big fire & plenty of wine. But the beating heart of the village nontheless.

+The Chapel: The house of the Sun King, the only god permitted in the empire. Tended to by an old, narrow minded priest who imagines himself wise. The pious & the needy tend to congregate here.

+The Orchard: A small grove of fruit bearing trees just behind the palisade. Many of the young men & women not yet old enough for the tavernkeeper to sell them wine hang around here. It's a familiar place for you & there are many memories here, good & bad.

You stroll through the village up to the chapel of The Sun King, a small & simple place given the tales you've heard of the grand temples situated in The Empires major cities. Though still the second largest building in the village next to the Chieftains hall.

It is tended by the village priest Jayr, who seems intent on convincing you to join the priesthood yourself.

Through your reading & a few conversations with learned travellers, you have learned that the people here did not always pray to The Sun King. Before The Empire came there were many gods, their names now mostly forgotten & their sacred places fallen into ruin. Tales of blood sacrifice in the hills & darkest parts of the forest paint the crushing of these faiths & the universal worship of the Sun King as a triumph of civilization over barbarism in the books. You wonder where the truth lies.

As you enter the chapel Jayr seems to be arguing with a stranger about something. A man with a sword at his hip & well made leather armor.

Roll for what to do...

Stranger: "I know it's" ..... "speaks of this village" .....

Jayr the priest: ..... "know less than you think" .....

Stranger: ..... "searched for months" ..... "a few leagues" ..... "Hisho's Forest"

Jayr: "You think there's gold, jewels" ..... "dead gods" ..... "heresy"

Stranger: "I'll pay well" ..... "lost kings buried"

Jayr: "Not for sale" ..... "never" ..... "nothing but broken stones"

You rack your brain to try & piece together what you've heard.

Hisho was an ancient Pagan king, died before the coming of the empire. He was legendary for his cruelty, fighting skills & wealth. Having amassed a fortune in plunder & tribute from neighbouring kingdoms.

He is something of a villain in modern religious literature, scripture tells of him sacrificing 2 young lovers & 4 friends each year to one of the old gods in exchange for victory in battle.

The wandering priest who taught you to read through the sacrifices were genuine, but probably more for fertile crops.

Beyond that, you're drawing a blank.

From Jayr's tone, you doubt he'd be willing to speak openly about this conversation.

You sense your opportunity.

"As it happens, I can read a little. Is that what you wanted from Jayr?"

The stranger raises an eyebrow.

"I'd take you for a liar but I'll chance it. Saves me trekking leagues back to the city for a reputable scholar. Come"

He gestures towards the tavern

"I've got something written need it read out to me, aquired at bloody cost, cant read myself. But I'll not tell the tale in the street."

You follow the stranger to the tavern.

The two of you take a seat in the most discreet corner you can find, drawing a few looks from other patrons.

The stranger buys you a cup of wine. He introduces himself as Menelau, a veteran of the imperial army. Of late a sellsword & treasurehunter.

He informs you that he has in his possession directions to the final resting place of King Hisho. Wherin some of the tyrants hoard of wealth is also said to be interred.

The snag is that his roguish scholar companion was killed in the caper to obtain the directions, a page torn from a priceless tome in the grand library of the Imperial capital. So now he has no-one to read the page & tell him where the tomb is to be found.

After some negotiation, he agrees to let you read the page for a small share of the spoils but only on the condition that you accompany him directly to the tomb, as insurance.

You feel as though you are standing on a threshold. On one side is the life you have always expected to live, working the fields, toiling in the muck, inheriting your parents farm. Probably marrying your childhood friend Kassa, Kol's daughter, who has wanted you for some time.
On the other side is a golden path to riches & adventure, a life unimaginable. You get the feeling that if you agree to it, Menelau will hold you to it. There will be no turning back.

What do you do?

You nod & gulp nervously.

Menelau tells you that you'll make for Hisho's forest at first light tomorrow. To gather some basic provisions & get a good nights sleep. He also gives strict instructions to tell no one what you're doing or where you're going, before disappearing off somewhere.

You still have the evening to put things in the village in order. Is there anyone you want to see or anything you want to do before turning in?

You head up to the Chieftain's hall to find Kol.

Though you know him better than most due to your relationship with Kassa growing up, you're still nervous speaking to him. A mystery to most. He has the look of a Northern raider about him, the fierce tribe of pale horsemen who ride acoss the plains raping & pillaging. Kol appeared at the village gates 18 years ago with a baby Kassa in his arms, offering his sword unto death to whomever gave them shelter. The Chieftain evidently accepted.

You find Kol looking bored as the Chieftain discusses the price of grain with some farmers.

You ask him for any advice he can give about fighting/surviving on the open road, though you leave out the part about impressing a girl. As you suspect he'd assume you were talking about his daughter.

He shrugs & says theres not much anyone can say that will turn you into a better fighter overnight. But he tells you not to let anyone get behind you & not to be afraid to use dirty tricks in a fight.

He also tells you that Kassa has been looking for you for most of the afternoon.

What now?

You head off towards your families barn. Where you & Kassa usually meet.

You've known Kassa as long as you can remember. The two outcasts of the village children, you naturally came together. You always having your thoughts on loftier things, never interested in the simple games of the other children. Her with her pale skin & yellow hair, reminding everyone of her barbarian heritage & the fear everyone had of her father, as well as the fierceness she seems to have inherited from him. You played together & grew together, constant companions. Although of late theres a tension between you that's new. Your heart races when she touches you, despite all the times you wrestled when you were small & you keep catching her looking at you when she thinks you dont notice & flushing red in the cheeks when you do.

You find her sat up on one of the crossbeams.

"Where have you been all day? I've been looking for you for hours"

How do you respond?

From this angle you would be able to see up her skirt, if she was wearing one. However as she is wearing roughspun trousers you cant see much.

She jumps down & gives you a hug. As she presses against you, you freeze, your heart pounding. You can never quite decide how to respond to these hugs now before theyre over.

"I've been worried about you" she says

You have no idea why, she's not usually a worrier.

"This is going to sound stupid, but I had a dream. A nightmare. We were both in it & the village.... It was horrible & so real, I just...."

She stops & stares at the ground, seemingly unsure if she should continue.

Do we ask Kassa about her dream? Or try & take the conversation elsewhere?

You tell her its alright & ask her to continue...

"The village is on fire, everyone is dead, cut open or hanging from the trees in the orchard, my father, your family, the chief, everyone. You & me we're there too, I thought we were dead as well but we're not, we just look....wrong. We were both sat in the branches of this huge, twisted tree. It was like nothing I've seen. It was bare of leaves like in the winter & it was smooth & white, more like bone than wood. All up of the trunk there were bloody smears, as if people covered in blood had been clawing at it."

"Behind it the sky was black like coal, with no stars, but there were three moons, all of them were too big. It was like they were eyes, looking at me"

She stops, shivering a little as if the memory disturbs her.

"That's all I can remember" She says.

Something about the pale tree she mentions stirs something in you. You're certain you've seen it, but you cant recall. Is it a dream or a memory? Something you've read about? For once, your mind fails you.

You pull Kassa into a warm hug, she looks like she needs it & honestly, her dream chills you. You need it too.

What now?

She clings to you, more urgently this time. You turn your head to look at her.

Before you can say anything she kisses you. It's warm & soft & perfect. She tastes like the orchard in springtime. You can feel the heat of her body pressing against yours through her clothes. The moment seems to last forever.

When it's over you've forgotten about pale trees & almost about your adventure tomorrow. But then with some trepidation you realise you cant keep your plans from her.

You tell her about Menelau & the search for treasure in the forest.

You tell her that you'll come back rich, take her away somewhere & marry her.

You'd tell her anything.

She listens quietly, patiently. Then nods.

"I'll see what I can scrounge up of my father's gear for you. But don't trust that man & don't trust the forest"

"And if you die, I'll never forgive you."

Then she's gone into the night...
