It has been nearly a week since the humans left your world, and you have enjoyed the peace and quiet their departure has brought. The Unity intelligence known as Theseus has spent the time “reflecting” as he calls it, on past events and mistakes in order to improve himself. He has offered to assist in your research, although you have declined his offer so far due to his claim that such mental activity will cause his available memory to fill up and effectively kill him, although he seems to find this an acceptable use of his existence. His unique perspective would offer a fresh take on your research efforts, and would likely speed up any research project you ask him to assist with.
Your diggers have made much headway in their mine. Their enhanced senses let them home in on pockets of ore instinctively, and as a result your new refinery is having trouble processing the sudden income of metals.
Your workers have completed construction of the algae farm. Five of the workers will be needed to maintain and harvest the precious nutrients, but it should provide more than enough food for your hive for now.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

Has the added benefit of being both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. 175M (Provides increased fortification and can withstand typical known bombardment technology.)
>Advanced Laboratory – New technology and hardware has revealed the need for more advanced testing apparatus and containment devices which will permit more dangerous testing and more advanced research projects. 60N 85M (Permits the construction of prototype weapons and armor, as well as the testing of said prototypes and accelerating research time.)
>Hangar facilities – the much needed landing and storage facilities for air and space craft. Has room for twenty aerodynamic drones and landing space for ten shuttles.
>>

>Unity Salvage 2/5 – Disassembly of the Unity drone has provided great insight into its operation. The drone itself is a very rudimentary intelligence that blindly obeys commands from its deploying ship in a manner not unlike your own thinkers. These commands can be interpreted poorly or with unexpected results if the drone encounters anything not detailed in its instructions, and will often react to such unforeseen events in a violent manner. The drone contains a number of powerful technology that should keep your thinkers busy for quite a while.
>Human Environment suit 2/5 – The human environment suit appears to contain several layers. Unfortunately these layers have been heavily damaged from the previous user’s violent demise at the hands of local predators. The first layer appears to be some kind of constrictive fiber weave that quickly absorbs liquids. A number of microfibers sewn into the fabric seem designed to monitor the user’s vital signs, and several such fibers seem linked into the suits various functions, which seem to offer the user a limited form of control over the suit. When torn, the suit “bleeds” a thick black fluid that quickly hardens over the affected area, creating a vacuum seal and make-shift cast, while several secondary layers of fabric constrict and harden when exposed to sudden and violent blunt trauma. A small device on the back serves as an artificial lung and waste disposal system, filtering waste water to a drinkable state and processing carbon dioxide into oxygen using a small culture of micro-organisms.

>Herd Beetle Dissection 1/5 – The Herd Beetle’s biology seems to be built like a massive lawn mower, with a series of blunt teeth lining a long, flat mouth that runs under its body. The beetle’s carapace is a massive layer of hardened bone that is endlessly added to with more and more layers growing over it as the beetle ages. Judging by the number of layers on the current sample, you can guess this beetle was nearly a hundred years of age. The beetle’s carapace is incredibly durable, but also tremendously heavy. It would be useful on larger drones, and as a component in ship hulls and bunker defenses, but it is far too heavy to be used in your current drone designs.

>>32513713
You can retroactively lay any new drones you wish. I just wanted to skip the boring days of waiting for your farm and mine to finish production. It has been 5 days since the humans have left.

Available research options 1/2
>Lightning gun
Very slow: potential of failure and destruction of sample device
This powerful weapon appears to throw rapid bursts of highly conductive plasma in a manner not unlike natural lightning. The humans of the Union call it a “CIP Pistol” which seems to stand for “Concentrated Ionized Plasma”. From what you have seen of it in action, it appears to have devastating damage potential, but is difficult to aim and holds a very short effective range.

>Ion thrusters
Slow
The Unity drone is held aloft by a series of powerful ion thrusters that use the air particles around it, or stray particles found in the interstellar medium to accelerate and change vector in a highly efficient fashion. No real fuel is needed, only a powerful electrical charge. The only major drawback is that with the increase in efficiency comes a drop in overall performance and power. The Unity appears to have gotten around this limitation by carrying their drones in larger ships that transport them in and out of combat, and by limiting the drone’s size to a bare minimum.

>Cyclotron particle beams
Very slow: Runs a potential of failure and destruction of the sample device.
Unlocks Liner particle beam research
The Unity drone is equipped with four powerful cyclotrons, a ring of superconductors that use powerful magnetic fields to rapidly accelerate a series of particles to near-light speeds, which are each attached to one of the four main weapons. The cyclotron is both compact and efficient, but is relatively fragile as damaging any one component will disable the entire system. It also requires a short but noticeable amount of time for the cyclotron to accelerate a new shot. The drone fires them in sequence to account for this and provide more firepower.
>>
>>32513799
2/2
>Conductive armor plating
Medium
The Unity drone appears to have been designed with the energy based CIP pistol in mind. Layers of highly conductive struts frame the armor like a faraday cage, protecting the inner working components from electrical fields and directing harmful blasts of energy away from critical areas. It is much less effective against solid projectiles however, and is only as strong as the metal alloy plating covering its chassis.

>Large land drone
Very Slow
Dissection of the Herd Beetle has given rise to the question of making larger or smaller drones. Using the Beetle as inspiration you should be able to design a much larger land based drone that could prove highly effective in a number of roles and make use of much more powerful and bulky technology and devices.

>Small land drone
Very slow
While scaling your current drones any smaller would cause all kinds of problems, you may be able to develop a new base drone design that is far smaller than your current drones. While such drones would be unable to perform most everyday tasks, they would be highly effective in a number of more subtle roles, such as surveillance.

>Advanced: A powerful FTL communication system that can beam thoughts to any other advanced relay regardless of distance. (200N 250M)

You don't know where a Unity server ship is. You would have to send an FTL relay over there and build one here, and then make first contact all over again, and so on.

Wait until you're ready to conquer space, jesus.
>>
>>32513909

Additionally, the Unity doesn't communicate via psionics so it'd be pointless for that anyway.

>>

>>
we really should create a second base. perhaps miles to the south of the Herd Beetle plains, in that mountain that was impacted by something during the battle. >>32359754 we gotta explore and spread across this planet anyway. first priority is building a farm there. then dedicated storage for said nutrients. then surveying it for a mine. salvaging the object that fell from orbit. and building a safe bunker for the hive queen herself. the deeper, the safer from such impacts or weapon blasts from space. we want one the humans don't know the location of, after all.
>>
>>32513951

Hive Drone stated that if we expanded our Antenna array then we would have a proper radar facility instead of just getting vague impressions. That's why I included it, because it'd be handy to know if the Union was putting down any SpecOps teams nearby.
>>
>>32513897

Theseus is perfectly willing to help you in your research efforts, and admires your dedication to gathering knowledge. His only request is that you make every effort to transmit his data to the Unity after he ceases to hold sentience, although he admits that there would be nothing to stop you from not holding up your end of the deal.

You can request Theseus to boost any one research subject. You then roll, in that roll the best of 3d100 will be the progress made, the lowest of the three will be the memory Theseus used.

What's the refinery's metals throughput per day?

I don't see it mentioned.
>>
>>32514309
accept the new drone propsal
>>
>>32514314

Well we've got 3 diggers right now and 1 refinery is barely/isn't keeping up pace.

A 2-to-1 ratio of diggers/refiners seems good then. Also though, Refiners take a long time to gestate while Diggers are quick and we may or may not be expanding into a new base soon.

All that aside we've got a massive nutrient stockpile and income, so we can afford slightly less than optimum layings.
>>
>>32514314
The refinery is mostly struggling at the moment since it hatched a few days after the mine started, so it's churning through a big pile of backed up ore. I'll go ahead and say that with the current richness of your mine, one refinery can take the load of 5 diggers.

Ok, all accepted except the refineries, since that is the only one that seems not to be almost unanimous.

Your current refinery is slowly catching up with your diggers, and can at max process the ore of 5 diggers per day.

You quickly ask Theseus how you might find more of his kind.

It'll be useful eventually, and we're in no rush on anything just yet.

As an aside, when we do CIP Pistol and Cyclotron research I think we should have Theseus assist us. It'll probably vastly lower the chances of us destroying our subject material.

Reading the pastebin for our space ship acceleration technology.

It looks like Ion drives is a big upgrade from primitive "Chemical thrusters". And of course more generally useful than the Skid drive.

Your current research options are:
>Lighting gun

>Cyclotron particle beams
>Conductive armor

Current consensus seems to be:
>Build Advanced Lab

>Split thinkers between Large and Small drones

Is this acceptable?

Small drone research will probably help with that.

Since the current minimum size for controllable drones is the size of a dog, two feet ish.

We could design a sneaky small drone like that with no mandibles, and no claws, but maybe with a ventral sac for storing stolen discs or samples, and enhanced senses. A stealer drone.

But we can talk about new designs at the end of the thread.

For recon you have the sniffers, which are flying drones capable of detecting objects and creatures at a distance using radar, echolocation, and olfactory senses. Your wasps also have rather effective radar and basic sonar abilities.

Small drone research will let you make drones that are much smaller than normal.

Your antenna array can still hear the faint pinging of the satellite left by the Union fleet. You can detect it moving across the sky every few days.
You wonder if there is anything left of value at the life pods the humans say they arrived in?

You actually have the same tech. Rail guns are a very primitive, but highly effective space weapon. The fact that the blast had no lasting radiation meant that it had no warhead. It was just a slug of metal accelerated to such a speed so that it held the energy of an atomic warhead.

>>
>>32515992
Your drones spread out and scour the area, quickly picking up the strange scent of scorched metal and smoke. Before long your sniffers circle the crash site cautiously. The fires have long since stopped, but the scent is still strong in the air. Each pod appears to be a small disk shape, with a parachute fluttering from the top of each one, and scorch marks covering the metal hulls. Several appear to have been destroyed upon landing, a few others look partially dismantled for parts. Between them are strewn a number of small pieces of debris, from scraps of metal to fluttering scraps of heat shielding drifting in the wind. Your workers move in to investigate the pods, and your sniffers move up above to look for any predators, when you think you spot something on the other side of the mountain range.

You send a sniffer to investigate, and you can hardly believe what you see!
Much of the mountainside has been decimated. Some of the fires still crackle, and the shattered hull has been scattered across the ravine, but in a large set of bold letters printed across one of the almost intact hull segments reads "USV Clarke".
Judging by the size of the debris field, you guess the ship was at least a hundred meters long, although not much of it is still in one piece. The remnants of a large domed metal cap leaks water into the river valley, while several arcing ring segments can be seen cast across the area.
You can detect a very faint amount of radiation emanating from the wreckage.

Our first crit should be special.
>>
>>32516377
Fuck everything all our workers are doing, they all must come to this place and steal the shit out of them.
>>
>>32516377
>The remnants of a large domed metal cap leaks water into the river valley, while several arcing ring segments can be seen cast across the area.

So the metal cap probably just... filled up with rainwater, right? It's open to the sky?

But what are "arcing ring segments"? Some glowing rings with lightning arcs spontaneously appearing between them once in a while?
>>
>>32516377
Can we fit this whole ship in storage?

Several segments of what was once likely a large metal ring, which currently is randomly discharging a very large amount of electricity between them and nearby debris. The cap is not open to the sky, and the water appears to be little more than a trickle now, although you can spot signs of erosion and flash flooding that seems to indicate it was once filled with water.
>>
>>32516486
Oh i know, but the radiation does bring up some problems, but good thing our workers are resilient.

We can have some Thinkers use some workers to explore the wreckage as a new research option.

>>

It doesn't really matter if it's out in the open though.

We can analyze it right here.
>>
>>32516561

>>
>>32516597
I rather hide it from the humans, i doubt they would leave such tech/ship behind on such a planet for multiple reasons.
Plus it can allow us to expand our hive immensely, and have this new cavern( once cleared up) be used for something else.
>>
Residual radiation, and a large structure leaking water? Sounds like a damaged reactor, to me.

>>
>>32516561
No, it appears that after a few days the flyers learned not to go near the loud but horribly deadly ring fragments.

>>32516638
The cap seems to be located at the front of the ship, judging by the wreckage, and the radiation appears to be coming from an active source, but it is faint. You suspect it is actually more near where most of the ring fragments are located.

>>32516667
Your warriors are highly tolerant of it due to the metal in their carapace, and a drone with filter lungs would be able to breath in a highly irradiated environment without issue.
>>
>>32516697
It might be easier to grind up rock from the mountain range and build walls and ceiling over it with worker cement.

Cuz even burying it, it will be obvious the earth was disturbed and something big was here/buried here.

The hulking corpse of the Clarke still hums occasionally, as if to stubborn to truly die. The flashing bolts of electricity arc from metal chunk to chunk. You wonder what could have survived the crash within? It clearly still has some form of power, although it is quite obviously beyond repair.

>>32516866
Depends on the drone you design it with. Only a small segment near the rear of the debris field seems to be eradicated to a dangerous level, and even then it doesn't seem to be too severe, although what is causing that radiation could prove to be dangerous.

>>32516922
The wreckage is east of the original human camp. The life pods are near the base of a mountain range while the Clarke has crashed several miles on the other side of the mountain. Regardless of whether or not they knew about it, you doubt they would have been able to scale the mountain range. Your drones, however could scale the small mountains rather quickly, or even dig a tunnel through it.

Your warriors move forward, making their way up the mountain towards the wreckage of the Union vessel. It takes most of the day to get their on foot, but as the sun is setting your warriors make it to the edge of the crash site. You scan the area for a safe way in and find a ruptured bulkhead near the front of the ship. As you enter you note the cramped hallway makes even your hive seem spacious by comparison. >Split up your warriors
Will handle them one at a time.

You send two in either direction, marching single file down the cramped hallway. The two you send towards the large cap quickly make their way to a small junction that connects to a number of other hallways that sprout out in all directions. Most of the halls have been torn away or caved in. One hallway leading upwards seems to lead to a small alcove where you see what looks like a floor, with several consoles and a chair bolted down, and hanging upside down. To the left is a small hallway that has been torn in half, and now leads to a seep drop to the ground below, and to the right is a large yellow door covered in black and yellow stripes. In what you consider to be the floor is a another doorway, with a small ladder leading to a poorly lit room of some kind. Brief flashes of malfunctioning electrical equipment give you only the faintest idea of its size. Directly in front of your two warriors is a large circular hatch, with the inscription "Bridge" plastered along the rim.

Your warriors jab their blades into the door to the bridge, and after a short time manage to pry it open. It opens with some effort and your warriors see what was once a command bridge. The walls have been torn open by the rock wall of the mountain, which has punctured the large cap and the bridge behind it. The room is flooded with almost a foot of water, and a number of computer panels spark as stray circlets hit the water. Some of them seem to still be operational, to some extent at least. Another hatch can be seen above and below. The hatch above is ajar, and a dim red glow emanates from within, while the one below is sealed shut and labeled "Maintenance access."

>>
>>32518502
It's made of jellyfish brains.

>>32518514
Because it is exactly as efficient, and does not take away a weapon slot that is actually needed to use weapons with.

There are vanishingly few circumstances we'll be sending warriors alone into places like this, especially once we have radiation-filtering workers laid.
>>
>>32518548

There are vanishingly few times we've used both the weapon slots on a warrior, and that aside when we (nearly inevitably) come into conflict with the humans it'll be handy to have a way for our combat units to interface with their tech already developed.
>>
>>32518548
>>32518514
I was thinking more along the lines of a hybrid warrior and thinker bug. The interface wouldn't be a part of the weapon slot. Might replace the antenna and/or wings slot with a bio-USB device.
>>
>>32518651
Occupying the second weapon slot causes a drop in effectiveness.

Interfacing is not for the middle of battle. Which is a fine time for accompanying workers to do their interface thing.
>>
>>32518674

There's no need to combine a warrior and a thinker when one is linked to the other psionicly.
>>
>>32518353
You find it difficult to move in the bridge. The floor is rounded off, with no clear difference between the floor and ceiling. Your warriors make their way to the damaged hatch, and scramble in. There doesn't seem to be a ladder of any kind, so your drones are forced to climb over each other and pull themselves up into the small chamber. Beyond the hatch is a small vertical hallway leading to a small doorway. The door slides into the wall, then jostles back and forth as if the mechanism is stuck on something. Your warrior scales the small corridor and pushes the door to the side with a metallic groan to reveal a square room of paneling covered in small lights, buttons and dials. A screen is embedded in the wall just opposite the door and a chair is bolted to one of the walls. The screen flashes periodically with various walls of text and flashing red readouts.

The consoles you find are designed to serve as an interface. Unlike the computer you salvaged it does not require a direct connection, although such a thing would likely prove useful.

A few of the more intact areas still hold some amount of water, but it's mostly empty. In the center of the room is a small couch buried under a pile of debris. Your warrior tosses the heaps of slag to the side and find a charred and torn corpse, still clutching the console.

After looking over the room piece by piece you find no real threat and move your warriors out. It should be safe for your workers to pick the area clean at this point, so long as they avoid some of the active wiring. They return to the small junction to finish their search. The hallways that lead down and up each seem to lead to a small bunk area, each one covered in scattered debris and personal items of various kinds. You wonder if there is anything of value hidden in the piles of junk.

Near the rear of the ship your other two warriors have found a number of rooms and corridors that move off in a maze of bulkheads and looping hallways. A small, white room covered in plastic labeled "Medical", a series of cloth cocoons lining a cramped, long and featureless room, and a large padded room filled with heavy metal slabs and bulky mechanical devices. Near the back is a large, heavy door labeled "engineering" which seems to lead outside, and into the next section of hull."

Your warriors halt at the door. The radiation seems to be at relatively safe levels bu you don't want to take any risks. A pair of wasps quickly make their way to the ship from your hive with your interface device while your warriors pry the corpse from the small, burnt couch. A good deal of the head is missing, and what is left has been charred beyond recognition, but the torso is in surprisingly good condition, apart from several deep puncture wounds. After nearly an hour your wasps have arrived at the crash site and enter the ship, interface in tow.

You attempt to research what exactly the problem seems to be.

>Containment field misalignment detected, Hawking radiation reaching deadly levels
Odd, the radiation levels you detect seem to be harmless in short doses. Your warriors would have to sit in there for several hours to actually be harmed by it. Perhaps humans are more susceptible to radiation?
>Containment breach imminent, containment fields must be realigned and reset to prevent singularity breach
>Estimated time to breach in, two hours and thirteen minuets
That doesn't sound very good at all.

Your warriors open the hatch to engineering and make their way down the hall. They almost tumble over as the hall seems to slope downwards without warning. The hall remains perfectly straight, yet the farther the warriors move down the hall the more it feels like they are climbing downwards instead of walking across a mostly level corridor.

You attempt to shut down the device, and as you enter in the various commands you hear a loud rumbling noise from outside the ship. The hull of the Clarke lurches forward, grinding against the side of the mountain. Your fleeing drones can see a large, glowing sphere, like a small sun flicker into existence just in front of the Clarke's shattered cap and grind into the mountain, devouring it piece by piece as the Clarke is slowly dragged forward. Your warriors are almost torn from the walls as a tremendous thumping sound emanates from deep within the ship and the feeling of falling increases. As they enter the chamber at the center of the engineering section you can see a massive ball of...nothingness, trapped in a cage of spinning rings. The large orb glows lightly, bathing the chamber in a deep purple light.
You can see a large chunk of debris has fallen into the device and has become pinched between several of the spinning rings, forcing them to stop.

Your warriors move into position, climbing the walls until they reach the gaping hole in the ship's hull. Your warriors take hold of each other and one lets go while the other does its best to anchor the two to the wall. The first warrior can almost feel itself stretching towards the singularity, and as your drone grabs hold of the chunk of bulkhead it jostles back and forth in the grip of the containment rings. Your warrior unsheathes its blades and hacks at the debris, slowly slicing through the twisted bulkhead until it snaps like a piece of rope and is sent spiraling into the singularity below. The rings quickly pick up speed and your warriors fall to the ground with a loud thud.

The Clarke grinds to a halt after devouring a large portion of a mountain, the gravitational distortions dissipating quickly as the warning lights cease.

>Gravity drive containment restored. Warning, energy shielding offline, Hawking radiation at lethal levels.

Your warriors pick themselves up and exit the engineering section. You will find time to study this device in more detail later, but for now you're just glad it didn't destroy the entire mountain range.

>>32521533
It should be noted that your diggers are not necessarily much more effective at actually digging than your workers, they are just able to sense ore in the ground and dig directly for the ore vein. They dig smarter, not faster.

even if FTLcomms work, we'd need to forge an ID to order under. Since the humans here evaced successfully, they'll know if their ship just starts ordering stuff under their name.

If we hack it, It might be good for siphoning information, but goods and machines leave a paper trail.

>>
>>32521647
We'll call it the Lee, obviously.
>>
>>32521624
Don't you need diggers for the tunnel, not workers? We can grow the tunnel pathways later, what's important is having an unobtructed walkway
>>
>>32521614
First of all, the idea of 'smuggling' to a planet that isn't even colonized is laughable. Second, you have no black market contacts. Third, the hive's secret advanced nature would be out so goddamn fast.

Fourth, well, read how FTLcomms work, just ctrl-f for it in last week's archive. 1-1 connection.
>>
>>32521647
Their FTL communications are done via entangled particles. You CAN'T forge a signature, since they'll know exactly what FTL comm is sending queries and whatnot.
>>
>>32521614
Union FTL communication uses quantum entanglement to create two particles that are effected by each other at any distance. They must be built at the same time, in the same place, and with a pre-existing connection. Any one comm can only connect to a single other comm. If it is destroyed, or the entangled particle lost then it becomes useless.

>>32521664
>>32521674
Your workers are quite effective at digging already, and much of the ground between your hive and the Clarke is soft soil, so they should be able to make excellent progress.
>>
>>32521674
We only really need one or two workers/diggers making the tunnel. It's not urgent.

Making a proper hive is much higher priority.

>>
>>32521976
Of goddamn course they left the star system. They were getting rescued.

No beacon altering. Altering it will give away what we did as soon as someone visits the system again.

You can't even try to do that until you build a hangar and a space ship anyway.
>>
>>32521897
What other planets are there in this system?

An asteroid belt might be useful as a stepping stone to a colonization fleet. I remember the garden world was being colonized by religious fanatics, so we'll be in for a fight there. Will have to bring a troop of warriors just in case.
>>
>>32521624
Your workers begin to dig into the stone of the mountainside around the Clarke. The steep, unnatural cave begins to crumble around the ship, and a small cave in buries most of the Clarke's mushroom cap shaped water tank. A small shelter for your drones to stay safe is quickly constructed, and several of your workers line up to the wall and start work on a tunnel to your hive. Your sniffers patrol the skies above your ever expanding territory, and the flyers in turn keep a watchful eye on your drones. Occasionally one swoops in towards a lone wasp or sniffer, but they have started to learn your drones are not so easily killed, and have started to search elsewhere for quick meals.
A brief whiff of a strange smell catches the attention of one of your patrolling sniffers, but it quickly disappears.
You realize after all this commotion that with all your new warriors and your newly hatched wasps, you are now rather under-equipped. You currently have 3 Thorn launchers and 2 Sting casters, but 10 warriors and 4 wasps.

>make new weapons for your combat drones

You currently have three weapons to choose from, each cost 15 metals per weapon.

Thorn Launcher – Powerful single shot projectile weapon that fires a high caliber chitin slug at high velocity, dealing large amounts of damage to a single target. Highly effective long range weapon, the only major drawback is its low rate of fire. Ammunition is naturally replenished over time as the warrior grows more chitin, and holds a medium amount of ammunition.
Dmg: Medium
RoF: Low
Rng: Long
Acc: High

Sting Caster – Rapidly fires small caliber chitin slugs at high velocity, shredding unarmored targets with a hail of low damage rounds. Poor accuracy limits effective range, and the high rate of fire can burn through the built-in ammo supply quickly if not rationed.
Dmg: Low
RoF: High
Rng: Medium
Acc: Low

Fire Spray – Sprays a highly volatile chemical compound from a pressurized nozzle, igniting any surface the compound encounters with flame. The substance itself does not burn, but reacts violently to other materials by dissipating rapidly and emanating large amounts of heat, igniting the target in the process. Causes severe chemical burns on anything it touches and ignites any flammable material immediately. The ammunition is stored under pressure, and will explode if damage is dealt directly to the weapon or its ammo storage. Ammunition can be very quickly consumed if not rationed properly, and fires can quickly spread to unintended areas, making it almost as dangerous for the user as it is for the intended target.
Dmg: High
RoF: Very high
Rng: short
Acc: Medium

That's just plain wrong.

You always get less than you put in to feeding an animal. Food webs always peter out towards the top for this reason.

Humans have cattle because we want a diverse diet. The hive does not want variety, they want a maximized number of nutrients.

Ants' 'cattle' process food into a form that the ants themselves can digest easier. We do not require a second species to do this for us. IF we did, we could dissect them and duplicate the process.
>>
>>32522684
The farm already does this, with the planet's electric field, at maximum efficiency.

And doesn't require some absurd 'taming' process.
>>
>>32522692

Your workers continue their efforts throughout the night, and as the sun rises your workers still toil away in the growing tunnel.
Strange, you don't hear the satellite's broadcast today.
Your flying drones make several supply runs to and from your hive while the tunnel is still under construction, and your workers at the Clarke have completed a rudimentary shelter that will protect them from any wandering animals or storms. They await your next set of orders.

Your sniffer drone dives down to the canopy of the forest and attempts to zero in on the source. Radar doesn't pick up much. Below the canopy everything becomes jumbled up, and echolocation isn't much better. Your sniffer can hear movement, however, and the smell seems to be coming from this direction. You focus in on that area and you pick up a small moving creature, about four feet long, but thin and lanky. It scuttles through the jungle and curls around a tree before making that same high pitched yelping sound.

Your sniffer banks away and lowers into the canopy of the jungle, landing in a small clearing and quickly moving into the foliage. The creature's strange noises make it easy to keep track of, and your drone manages to move in closer to get a proper look from the shadows.

You see a small, petite looking creature with six limbs, each one an identical grasper that seems as useful as a hand as it is for a foot. It quickly moves along in short bursts in all maner of ways, first rushing through a bush on all six limbs, then raising itself on its hind legs to look to the sky, then bounding off on its lower two limbs again. Its head is a small, stubby ball with a single beady eye in the center and a small straw-like mouth of bone sticking out at the bottom of its head. You watch it silently for a short while until it stops, looks back up to the sky, and starts making that strange yelping sound again. Small flaps on the side of its head seem to vibrate as it calls out, and then runs off. You make to follow it, climbing a tree to get a better view. It's then that you notice it's bright yellow color seems to be artificial, like a small environment suit. It calls at the sky again, and then runs off, this time completely disappearing for a few moments before you hear the call again, some distance away.

Your sniffer moves in again, jumping from tree to tree as quietly as possible. You eventually manage to track it down and spot it hunched over a small bush of bird-berries. It jabs at them with its small proboscis, causing them to burst open with their small leathery wings and scatter into the air. The creature leaps back with a squeak and tumbles across the ground before getting back up again. It seems to have changed color to a light green since you lost it.
Very briefly it tilts its head to one side and glances in your direction, making a faint yelping sound as it does so, and then turns away and bounds over to a tree. You move to follow and as you start climbing a tree to look at where it's heading you hear another yipping sound behind you. You turn quickly and see the small yellow face of the creature you saw earlier. It shakes its head back and forth as it makes calls out towards your drone, then you hear the other answer from just a few feet away.

Page 10, thread might die
>>
>>32523680
You can see the two creatures circling the tree in confusion and eventually they look at each other. They yelp and squeak at each other briefly before pulling out a set of small devices from their suits and tossing them into the air. Four small orbs fly into the sky from their hands, each one emitting a series of high frequency beeps as they move through the jungle. The yellow one pulls out a small tablet which quickly forms a map of the local segment of jungle. They freeze as they hear your approaching wasps, and quickly slap at each other before running to a small clearing and pulling out a pair of long, metallic objects from the brush.

You have four wasps approaching at high speed from two directions, and they do not seem to have detected your sniffer.

What will you do?

Your wasps spot the small orbs flying just above the canopy and split up to move in on them all at once. The orbs quickly shift their movement to evade, and immediately dive into the canopy and through the trees. Your wasps keep pace, chasing the orbs as they bob and weave through the jungle at high speed.
There's that smell again. A musty smell. almost like smoke.
One of your wasps is hit by something. It hits a tree and is quickly enveloped in a thick film of some kind. Your other wasps move to help their brother, but with a loud twang another of your wasps is swatted from the sky. It hits the ground with a thud, a large metal rod stuck in its carapace has pinned its wings. Your sniffer watches as the two small creatures run off after the wounded wasps, and as they do so you spot a figure move out from the brush. He is clearly human, clad in a black metal armor and covered in a densely woven net of fungus and algae. A large mushroom cap is situated directly on his helmet. In his arms is a large, bulky contraption of pulleys and cords, and with a quick pump of its handle a new metal bolt is loaded and ready to fire.

As the figure steps forward into the clearing he pulls back his helmet's visor, revealing a pale human male, covered in scars, and a lopsided smile across his face.
"Roger that Coil. Bagged on, hit another. See you in ten." With a quick motion he slips a hand into one of his belt pouches and takes out a small, fat roll of foul smelling, brown paper and lights one end. "God, I love this job."

And that's it for tonight. Will try to stay till we 404, but I have work tomorrow so I may have to go before then.

>>
>>32524110

We have any number of things we could do to them, but yes they all start with tracking them back to their outpost/ship.
Lucky for us we retained the guise of non-sapient.

I kind of want to get into some shenanigans with our Speaker while we dispatch a clutch of workers to start digging a cavern out under their ship to collapse them into and get ambushed by warriors in.

I...know that?

>>
>>32524143
Can we drone design before 404?

Something like a wasp with Explosive glands added?
>>
>>32524241
Sure.

Self-destruction: Disposes of the drone’s body to prevent capture or research, but run a risk of killing the drone when severely damaged.
Acid glands: Glands of acid burst open on death, rapidly disintegrating the body in a manner that does not cause harm to others.(1N)
Explosive glands: Pressurized organs of highly volatile chemicals burst on death, splashing everyone and everything within melee range with caustic acid.(2N)
>>
>>32524190
I kind wanna know, for personal reasons. How often do you read the paranoid ramblings within your thread, and think "...What the fuck...well that IS a pretty good idea..."

I feel like everyone here goes paranoid OVERdrive for some reason.
>>
>>32524228

On that note though, if we get the chance then our wounded wasp is going to play dead and then maul a motherfucker.

>>32524241
I've also wanted to propose an AP-type rifle. It's just an upsized or modified Spike Rifle that fires a larger spike filled with acid.

Payload could be modified with biological agents or other chemical ones once we develop them though.
>>
>>32524254
Would it be worth the cost?
That is, would they be Baneling cost worthy?
>>
>>32524265
It also prevents capture. So that at least is something.
>>
>>32524265

Well current wasps take 11 nutrients to make, but they have the top-notch wings. I figure that for kamikazes we could make do with mid/shit wings and could even make them nearly sense-less (using other nearby drones to direct them), and if we do that it'd be relatively cheap.

But kamikazes are never going to be the most resource-efficient units anyway.
>>
>>32524276
That doesn't concern me too much. Not like these guys are enemy scientist.

>>32524284
I meant more like, would they provide a heavy enough threat to infantry to make this shift and distinction necessary?
Because otherwise, just send warriors. More cost efficent.
>>
>>32524254
What's the current laying cost of wasps?

combat claws (1N) + Strength arms (1N) + Combat mandibles (1N) + Advanced wings (4N) + Sprint legs (1N) = 8?

We could drop the legs entirely. And maybe the mandibles too.
>>
>>32524300

Wasps have some fancy antennas too, that's why they cost 11N
>>
>>32524213
Well not certainly one of the SURE LETS TELL THEM WERE ADVANCED ALIENS. But I wanted some form diplomacy or alliance, I've seen the error of my ways.
>>
>>32524310
Huh, weird, was trying to find what went into them and it looks like it was 10N last thread >>32213302

I can't find where the better senses were mentioned.
>>
>>32524255
Actually, not all that often. You guys leap on to just about any hint I drop. Like the cordyceps.

>>32524265
That depends on your point of view. On the down side, a combat drone with explosive glands will end up dying a lot more often when a normal drone would just be injured. It wouldn't happen every time you get hit, but it would cause more casualties in combat that you would take otherwise. On the bright side, it splashes acid in the face of whoever killed it if you're close enough.

>>32524298
but anon, there needs to be demand for an animal for a poacher to hunt it.

>Cost effectiveness
That tells me that no it wouldn't be. Not yet, anyway. Enemy infantry would need to be densely packed for splash to be effective, right?

It just feels like an unnecessary step, when we can just make more sturdy warriors.

We need more parts and weapons to make effective air superiority units, also.

>Poachers
True, but I doubt it's for us...I mean, that wouldn't make much sense since our existance wasn't known a week ago. But there is plenty of other shit around for these guys to poach.

Part of me wants to overwhelm them, and take their shit. Part of me wants to leave them alone.
And stock up Warriors. Just in case.
>>
>>32524331
Yeah, I can see that they're 11N.

I just can't find the missing reason WHY. where that extra 3N go into.
>>
>>32524364
Why the fuck would them poaching random shit that nobody also ever heard of a week ago be MORE likely than poaching exotic sapients discovered a week ago?
>>
>>32524328
>>32524370
radar for 2, air superiority for 4, and basic sonar for 1. The unaccounted for 3 are likely from the radar and sonar. They are nowhere near as effective at recon as your sniffers, but they still have some good quality senses for closing in on potential targets, or evading something that's too much for them.
>>
>>32524364

Kamikazes aren't entirely about the hardcore numbers of their kill effectiveness though. They're primarily a psychological weapon, and secondarily used to take out high value but difficult to reach targets. No soldier wants to face an enemy that'll spew acid all over your face even if you manage to kill it past its razor-claws and ravening chitin mouthbits.

That being said, if we roll out kamikaze units then we're basically assuring anyone who's watching that we have a centralized hivemind, because the only way for sapients to have kamikazes is religion/patriotism or not having enough brain to drive the survival instinct in anyway (which can't evolve naturally).
>>
>>32524384
The planet was known about, just not well charted. We don't really know it's history, either. There's plenty of life on the planet that's been here way longer then we have. Assuming no one knows any of them above us seems off to me.

>>
>>32524399
I reckon that's fair enough too. Good against a foe like that.

Let's get a better look at their numbers, I say, before employing kamakaze weapons. If they do have some hard to reach high value targets, then I can get behind that.

Not totally sure how good psychological warfare will be on asshole poachers...but I guess we can always give it a shot, if they have quite a few heavies and such.
>>
>>32524415

Eh, maybe. I'd still rather not give them dead solid evidence.

>>32524408
You've never met a scientist that's been really desperate for funding, have you?
>>
>>32524433
It's no more evidence for a "centralized" hivemind than for a decentralized one. Which is what they think already.
>>
>>32524433
To be dead honest? No no I haven't.

But it doesn't matter I suppose. We can defend ourselves against a few poachers.
>>
>>32524428

Psychological warfare usually works better/best on non-state militarized forces. They don't have a reason to stick around, no paycheck is worth your life.

I mean, shit, Machiavelli laid it out in the Prince that you need 3x as many mercs as your own soldiers for any given operation because they'll turn tail at the first hint of trouble.
>>
>>32524433
Also technically, they won't be kamikaze in the traditional self sacrifice.

They'll be melee attackers that will stab you until you kill them, and THEN they explode.

It's not like things would be different if we had kill-murdered them all. Then we'd have a big angry human fleet in orbit.
>>
>>32524530
No we wouldn't. That probe didn't even know where the SOS came from until we blabbed about it with our radio transmission.

Then Unity would have destroyed the probe, and the Clarke would have just mysteriously been wiped out by Unity.
>>
>>32524541
The Unity would still know where we are, and would come to take some samples of their own. Their presence may have even attracted human attention.

Point is, we were gonna get found out either way.
>>
>>32524551
Way to keep backpeddling and changing the topic.

Obviously permanent secrecy was impossible with star conquest on the way regardless. The point is to put off discovery longer than it would have. And that no, there would not have been "angry human fleet" if we just let the humans get wiped out by local wildlife.
>>
>>32524565
How does that change topic?
My point was we were going to get found out sooner or later, and advocating for murdering everything in sight wouldn't have solved that.

Hell I didn't even care to talk with the humans, but hunting them down was just dumb.
>>
>>32524581
Unity is not the same threat as the Union. For one, they weren't trying to colonize. And also, we did deal with those drones by...murder-izing them. Did you think THAT solved nothing?

>murdering everything
Why do you keep assuming this? Letting them die isn't murder. Who suggested direct attacks? And it would have solved it by making it "later". Much later. That's the whole point.
>>
>>32524070
Actually, since the wasps have radar / radio sensitivity, did they sense the transmissions this guy was using to talk to "Coil"?
>>
>>32524514

Everyone else stayed silent because it's an extremely obvious conclusion.

Also, it's not like this is a terribly big deal or even much of a hassle. We just have to kill a few fuckers, easy as cake.
