Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you fell under the influence of a malevolent dragon, struck a deal with the skeletal beings spectating your life, and found the bandit you've been hunting.

Behind you your party lies either wounded, paralyzed, or incapacitated. In front of you is the man you've traveled fifteen miles beneath the surface of the Earth to find, and he's walking off with the dragon egg you found buried in stone. You've just barely managed to avoid selling your soul to malevolent forces by indebting yourself to the three strange beings which granted you your cloak. You're tired, your reserves are low, and there may or may not be a massive dragon hunting you at this very moment.

Baldev's armor is rent open across the back, scratched by some massive creature you would guess. An arrow protrudes from his thigh, likely Chryssa's doing. His right arm has been slashed open by a blade of some sort and is bleeding profusely. Overall, he looks like he's been through hell. Yet he still made short work of your party after being trapped down here for days. Undoubtedly he is a competent warrior, and judging by what you've seen of his handiwork quite the experienced vatis as well. You're not sure you'd look forward to fighting him one on one.

You're surprised to hear a voice intrude upon your thoughts. It's Darzi's, and she sounds surprisingly calm given the circumstances. {Don't let him get away. I wanted the honor of ending his life for myself, but kill him if you have to. Cripple him at the least.} Chryssa's voice follows shortly afterward. {Do not underestimate his capabilities. His armor has many odd properties, and artifacts aside he is a talented combatant.}

You've kept it loaded, though it hasn't been relevant lately.

>>32533532
You could, actually. You can channel up to 4 vys into your armor to improve your physical attributes by +2 per point of vys. Physical attributes govern bonuses to aiming with the pistol, as does familiarity with firearms.

Doing so would turn it into a Regular Failure with the possibility to expend 2 vys and make it a success, making the total cost of the attack 7 vys. Leaving you with 3/27.

You reach into your cloak, withdrawing your pistol. You use a bit of fire magic to light the string and then withdraw the metal rod from its holding slot to make sure the cartridge is packed firmly into the barrel. Then you slide back the cover on your armor's control panel and activate the function simply labeled 'boost'. Strength seems to flood your limbs and the world snaps into sharp focus, but you pump even more vys into your armor to amplify the effects further.

As you level your pistol you pump fire magic into the weapon, smoke starting to curl from the barrel. Baldev has just reached the walkway at the rim of the chamber when you squeeze the trigger, sending a roiling fireball rocketing out of the pistol. Even with your enhanced strength, the kick is strong enough to wrench your arm up and back, sending shooting pains through your shoulder. The round clips Baldev in the shoulder and explodes into light and heat, forcing you to shield your eyes. Consciously you realize it must have been very loud, but you're still deafened after hearing that dragon's roar.
>Vys Pool: (3/27)

When the light fades and you can safely look again, Baldev is laying sprawled out on the floor. His left arm is gone, as is a good portion of his neck and torso. Burns cover what's left of him. Even if he survived, he's a dead man surely. Of course, you're only barely still conscious. As you cut the flow of vys to your armor every muscle starts to ache, your vision grows blurry, and a deep sense of weariness and lethargy sets in. Even walking seems to take an immense effort.

You place the pistol once more within your cloak, grabbing hold of the handle of your sword as you hobble up the sloped metal pathway towards the walkway above, where Baldev lays. You cast a quick leech spell to drain it of its charge, the flood of energy doing wonders for your aches and pains. You're still tired, but you should be able to fight.
>Vys Pool: (12/27)

You feel the ground shake violently as you're approaching Baldev's corpse, causing the stone around you to crack and the magma beneath to boil up to the surface. It's nearly enough to knock you off your feet, though you manage to keep your footing. Looks like the gunshot was loud enough to attract the attention of at least one dragon, though you can only hope it wasn't the mother.

Before you can properly regain your footing magma surges up from beneath the platform you're standing on, coiling around your legs almost like a living being. It burns, even through your armor it burns, and before you properly know what's happening the molten rock has risen up to your waste and begun to solidify. You struggle, and at least manage to keep your hands free, but from the waste down you're trapped in solid rock.

You glance up to see Baldev struggling to his feet, except he seems... wrong, for lack of a better word. A strange haze seems to surround him, and his wounds have stopped bleeding. When he finally gets to his feet he stands crooked, slumped over, almost reminiscent of an ape. He whips his head around violently and you see two pits of black surrounded by a glowing white corona where his eyes ought to be. He raises his one remaining arm and you feel him beginning to channel vys...

Err, just to clarify: Can we flip the cloak inside out to absorb Baldev's next spell?
>>
>>32535000
You're not sure entirely what happens when you channel vys into the cloak, you only tried it once and you were too low on vys to really get much of an effect. It seemed to flip the inside surface of the cloak to the outside and the outside to the inside. It also actively sucked in anything near it.

You wouldn't be able to just remove the cloak and turn it inside out, as the bottom of the cloak is trapped in stone.

You snap off a quick spell, hurling a spear of ice as long as you are tall through the air with immense force just as he's preparing to discharge his spell. As the spear approaches it seems to slow, losing some of its momentum, but you use a bit of water magic to push the ice forward despite the effects of his armor. It pierces him through the chest and carries him off his feet, slamming him into the wall behind him.

At the same time you channel vys into your cloak, and feel a distinct chill settle over you. The rock begins to crack and fall apart and the smoke that fills the room is being sucked forcefully beyond the event horizon of your cloak. Eventually the rock trapping you in place begins to fall apart, sucked into your cloak as well.
>Vys Pool: (8/27)

The blow was enough to knock off his aim and his spell goes wide, a beam of fire shooting through the air and impacting the crystals surrounding the upper portion of the generator. There is a flash of light and the air is filled with a strong, acrid scent. Some sort of powder or smoke begins to descend from the ceiling, filling the room. A warning flashes in the corner of your vision and the scent vanishes, but you find yourself worrying for your companions. While Chryssa, Darzi, and Fulvia will be okay Profectus is still at risk. He's unconscious and was bleeding heavily the last time you saw him.

The spear of ice protruding from Baldev's abdomen, while not enough to kill him, has limited his movement. His fingers scrabble at it uselessly, though in this environment it's rapidly melting anyway. You doubt he'll be stuck there for long. The initiative is yours.

You draw you spear from your cloak and take a few steps towards Baldev, before thinking better of it. That strange detritus is quickly filling the air after Baldev's spell went awry and the safety of your companions takes priority. Before you leave Baldev to struggle against the wait of the ice spear in his abdomen you do note that the egg is safe. It must have fallen out of his hands and rolled out of sight after you shot Baldev.

You half-run half-slide down the narrow metal pathway down to the cavern entrance. You quickly step past Chryssa and Darzi, both still paralyzed, and stop only for a moment to place Fulvia's core back into her body. She springs back to life almost immediately, but you're already moving on to Profectus. He's laying right where you left him, in a pool of his own blood with his chest slashed open.

You crouch down next to him and begin channeling vys into his wounds. Immediately the cuts begin to knit themselves shut, but his skull has also been cracked and he has a nasty concussion. Those take a little more finesse to heal. The real problem is the blood loss though, and you're not nearly confident enough in your skill to try creating new blood as it pumps through his veins. Not yet at least.

Once he's healed you wind your hand back and slap him hard across the face. The shock is enough to wake him, and he bolts upright shouting something you can't hear. Once he's awake you stand up and take a moment to heal your own ears, though you're not happy with what you hear. The rapidly approaching rush of air and beat of wings indicates that the dragons do indeed know you fled down this tunnel, and judging by how fast the hatchling you encountered could fly you probably only have a few seconds before they arrive.

>You can worry about it later, take Profectus and Fulvia with you to the central chamber so you can finish off Baldev.

{Fulvia, seal the tunnel. It will buy us some time.} She nods, and begins to collect vys for a spell. In the meantime you drag Profectus up and point him down the tunnel. {Go grab Chryssa and start carrying her out, we'll catch up in a moment. Watch out for Baldev, he's still walking.} He stumbles off down the hall, still a tad disoriented you'd wager but he'll probably manage the task just fine.

You turn to face the exit, and just as you glimpse the first horned, scaly head peaking around the corner and flapping its wings to alter course towards you Fulvia's spell discharges. A massive wall of Earth erects itself between you and the dragon, and not a moment later it's transmuted into solid steel. You hear something pound against it, denting the surface, but you and Fulvia are already sprinting in the opposite direction.

Fulvia scoops up Darzi, she's actually surprisingly strong come to think of it. That armor Darzi is wearing is terribly heavy. That leaves you to get the egg, though as you round the corner you see that Profectus is struggling with Baldev, who appears to be trying to strangle him. He dropped Chryssa rather unceremoniously on the ground. As you're about to rush in to help, he presses his stone hand to Baldev's chest and a beam of light shoots out of his back.

You have to shield your eyes, but when you look again Baldev has been sliced in half. Profectus shoves the bandit's upper body onto the weak stone adjacent the walkway, though it still seems to be alive. Seriously, what the hell? There is less than a third of him left and yet he still tries to fight. It's almost comical at this point.

I have a feeling we will some day return to this place, as I doubt we are strong enough to deal with all the shit lurking down here. For now lets get out while we can
>>
You're snapped out of your reverie by the sound of rending metal. Looks like that barrier won't last long. Profectus picks up Chryssa while you and Fulvia rush up the metal pathway. You stop for only a moment to pick up the egg and then dash for the massive bulkhead door which sits adjacent the viewing chamber. Once everyone has been packed inside, Fulvia punches the central panel on the bulkhead into the facility and punches something into the board of keys that reveals itself. The bulkhead behind you slams shut just as you hear a loud roar of triumph.

An grainy, artificial voice speaks from an unknown source. “Contaminants detected: purge initiated.”. Slowly, the powder that fills the air begins to filter away through the two large vents in the room, though you don't really have the luxury of time...

I'm thinking here that dragons are sort of like lizards, right. They need heat to warm their body and keep their blood moving and warm. The poison might slow them down if we use it in conjunction with frost magic. Also, the glands Soma is talking about is kinda icky, detail wise. Venomous beasts have to inject their venom. Poison is ingested. Soma is calling them poison glands when they're probably venom glands.

You glance around the room, but there are no lockers to stuff yourself in. The only things in this room other than the bulkhead doors are the two large vents on either end of the room, but they'll have to do. You approach the vent to your left, the one furthest from the viewing chamber, and motion Fulvia over. {I need you to pull this vent cover off, but gently. I don't want it to be obvious it was removed.}

She nods, and begins to gather vys. Only a few moments later something impacts the bulkhead separating you from the central chamber. Fortunately these doors seem quite a bit sturdier than the barrier Fulvia erected. It's not even dented. Still the dragon continues to hammer away at the door. You're starting to think you might actually have a chance of escaping normally when you hear the sound of glass shattering loudly and a door being rent open.

Seems there might be a few of these bastards, and at least one of them is going to be waiting for you on the other side of this bulkhead. Fortunately Fulvia discharges her spell and the metal vent cover subtly deforms. It's enough that Fulvia can slide it off without much difficulty.

You send Profectus in first, carrying Chryssa with him. Just inside the vent there is a steep incline but Fulvia uses a bit of metal magic to fashion foot and handholds in the metal. After Profectus you go, with the egg in arms. It's a real hassle to carry but you're managing okay. It helps that the egg is fairly sturdy and you don't have to worry about breaking it when you hit it against the metal. Finally Fulvia climbs in last with Darzi in tow, sealing the vent behind her.

The suction inside the vent is such that you feel yourself being dragged further in, but it's not hard to resist the pull. You're not really sure where this vent leads, but you don't want to be flung into some sort of filter which will chop you into tiny bits and drain you of vys.
(1/2)
>>
You hear a beep, and then the sound of the heavy bulkhead sliding slowly upwards. You hear claws clacking against metal and then the whine of metal rotors as something grabs the door and slams it upwards forcefully. Suddenly being chopped to bits doesn't sound so bad...

You sit very, very still while the creature patrols the room. You hear its claws clacking loudly against the floor and it lets out a long, low hiss as it patrols the room. You hear its snout press against the metal vent and snort several times loudly. However, it's followed by a sound that almost sounds like a gag, and then a sort of hacking cough. You glance down at yourself and notice that you're covered in that acrid smelling, toxic powder. It's probably enough to mask your scent.

The dragon rips open the vent, and you hear the metal twist and break as it shoves its head inside. Fortunately you must be too far inside the vent because a moment later it jerks its head out. You're about to sigh in relief when a jet of flame shoots up the vent and past you, scorching your armor something fierce. Fortunately your cloak seems fairly fire resistant, so the flames simple roll past you. Your companions are similarly unharmed, though Fulvia looks a tad scorched.

This seems to convince the dragon that the vent is empty, so it moves on to the next one. You hear it rip off the vent cover forcefully and shove its head inside once more. Again, there is the roar of flame as it breathes fire down the vent, and afterward you hear it sniff the air loudly. It speaks... excitedly? It's difficult to tell, but it does hiss and grunt rapidly so you assume that it thinks it found something. After a few moments it leaves the room, seemingly content.

You carefully withdraw your nature staff from your robe, though in the cramped confines of the vent you're unable to remove it entirely. Once you've got it far enough that you can maneuver it you begin channeling vys into the staff, green light shining from the carved dragon on its head. You wonder why on earth the thing has a dragon carved on top of it, but it seems oddly fitting at the moment.

You can pick out one dragon, a smaller example of the race, sitting in the room between the two bulkheads. You're not sure if it's waiting or standing guard or what. In the central chamber you see a huge dragon, not quite the size of the mother but easily twenty feet long, investigating what you think is the generator. Another dragon seems to be investigating the various rooms of the facility while a fourth is stalking off down the tunnel back towards the nest. At least you don't see any sign of Baldev.

There is no way in hell you are leaving this vent any time soon, that much is obvious. In fact, you think creeping slowly and quietly further into the vent system is sounding like a pretty good idea right about now. You don't want them stuffing some young hatchling into the vent to hunt you down, though you're not even sure a newborn hatchling could fit in this vent if the eggs curled up next to the mother were any indicator of their size.

{We need to go further into the vents. One of them is waiting outside and there are four others in the facility.} Profectus has the bright idea to just slowly scoot himself further into the vents. You and Fulvia follow suit. It's slow going, but you gradually ease yourselves further and further away from the beast waiting to rip you open and eat your innards.

After several minutes of crawling along like that you hear a shout from behind you. When you glance over your shoulder to check if Profectus and Chryssa are okay, they're simply not there. Instead three is a hole in the vent where the metal rusted and fell apart. You try to get a look inside, but it's too dark to see all the way to the bottom. It seems to just be a straight drop down to the level blow. Still, there isn't in lava. You'd see it if there was.

{Profectus, are you alright?} There is a long pause before he replies. {Yeah, fine. Totally fine. I mean, my legs are broken, but I'm fine.} Fucking... you've only got so much vys, these people need to stop getting hurt. {That's alright, I can heal that.} You contact Chrys next. {How about you? Are you okay?} She responds promptly. {I am uninjured. I landed on Profectus.} Well that's a relief, you suppose.

You withdraw the grappling hook and rope from your cloak, slipping the rope through a loop at the bottom of the grappling hook and tying a quick noose to keep it in place. Probably a little ominous, but it's the only knot you know how to reliably make. Once the hook and rope are secure you have Fulvia push it through the metal of the vents. You also have her reinforce the metal around it, simply because you don't want to rip the metal off halfway down.

Once its secure you shove the egg into your cloak, since you doubt a brief stay in the cold vacuum won't hurt it, and then grab hold of the rope with both hands and carefully slide down. You manage to make it to the bottom safe and sound and then step aside so Fulvia can mimic the procedure. Once you're out of the way of the rope you withdraw the egg from your cloak. It's still blazing hot, so it ought to be fine.

You take a brief look around the cavern. It's large, and fairly devoid of anything. The ceiling seems impossibly high all things considered, almost like it's a canyon in a much larger compound. You find Profectus lying a short ways away from where you landed, apparently he rolled after hitting the ground, which is unsurprising considering you landed on a fairly steep slope. The only interesting feature in the room is a large hole carved into the wall, the stone around it rippling in an almost liquid manner. Two large spires ascend towards the ceiling next to it, and the remains of what you think was a tree carving sit above the pitch black hole.

You approach Profectus, crouching down to heal him. It doesn't take much, much less than you were expecting actually. You also note that Chryssa is starting to regain her ability to move. She can wriggle her fingers now. Impressive, considering it's only been maybe a half hour.

Your suit's environmental seals deactivate, apparently the air is safe to breathe here. Profectus remarks. “I really don't like the look of that hole.” Though you can't imagine why he'd say that. It looks ominous, sure, but it's hardly the scariest thing you've seen in the last hour.

Prof would overall be a better party member. and could be as usefull as chys.

You glance around the room through the lens of your magic sight, noting several curious properties. While there is no more vys than normal in the room, it's all oddly colored. Not the bile yellow of corruption, but rather a deep, rich purple color. While it's not unusual for ambient vys to appear purple, it usually ranges towards blue. In addition, the hole in the wall is absolutely devoid of vys. This alone would be strange, but it's made stranger by the fact that the remnants of the tree carving above the hole are absolutely glowing with energy.

You withdraw your nature staff from your cloak and channel vys into it, casting the resultant green light around the room. Nothing lights up, save your companions. The entire place is lifeless. You're not sure if this soothes or worries you, but at least you don't have to worry about any dragons popping out of the stone to attack you. Still, the fact this cavern is absolutely devoid of life combined with the fact there appears to be a gaping hole in reality on the wall don't exactly comfort you.

You take a few moments to go on a brief patrol around the area. There don't appear to be any other exits. You come to a massive, flat wall at one point that you think might be the mine you've been inside until now. The portion you can see is definitely rounded. It occurs to you that you may be at the very bottom of that pit you first crossed by bridge, the pit Darzi tossed Baldev's key down. Then again, you'd expect to be able to see up to the top of the mine if that were the case. You also wouldn't have expected to fall down here through an old vent.

You return to the rest of your party, staring for a few moments at the hole before addressing Fulvia. “Where is this?” She responds promptly. “I do not know. Your guess is as good as mine.” Both your voices seem to echo hollowly in the vast space. For some reason it makes you feel remarkably lonely down here.

My problem is that you're retarded enough to suggest throwing away the loot we've gotten in these ruins.
>>
Finally, you decide to investigate the hole itself. As you draw closer, you think you can start to pick up lights inside the blackness. Dim, glowing lanterns sending twisting trails of smoke skyward. The closer you get, the more it begins to resemble a face, with two eyes, a skeletal nose, and a row of sharp, uneven teeth. Before you really realize what's happening you're standing only inches from the pane of black, staring into the eyes of a strange creature. It doesn't lunge out to attack you, nor does it speak. Merely sits there, staring at you.

You clear your throat, wondering what exactly you're supposed to say to this thing. You start with something simple. “Hello.” The creature leans forward, the barrier between you and it warping and contorting but holding firm. Waves roil across it almost like water. You hear a voice in your head, or rather you hear voices. It sounds like several people speaking simultaneously. You find it unbelievably eerie, to be honest. {Hello, Mik.}

Great, it knows your name. That will make introductions so much simpler. “Well, you seem to know me. Who are you?” There is another long pause before it replies. {You should already know that.} That is perhaps the most useless answer you've ever received to a very simple question. “Well I'm sorry Thrax but I must have forgotten you. Care to remind me?” The creature slowly recedes, back into the darkness it came from.

As the last of the light vanishes, you think that's the end of it. You feel a strange sense of ease come over you, of relaxation. Like letting out a breath you hadn't realized you were holding. As you turn to realize you hear that same eerie voice in the back of your head. It speaks one word, and then fades. {Come.}

We're tied.

I'll get on it in a second.

>>32540562
I'll probably make another thread tonight. Not sure when the thread after that will be.

Final destination.

You transmit to each of your companions. {Everyone get over here, we're going into this hole.} Profectus is the first to respond. {I really have no interest in entering that hole. In fact, I'd say that hole looks pretty suspect. I don't think anyone should be entering that hole.} Fulvia is next. {Why are we going into this hole? Do we know what lies on the other side? Why were you staring at it for so long?} You cut in before anyone else can complain. {Where is your sense of adventure? A creature with glowing orifices that knew my name told me to follow it into the hole. I don't want to do it alone.}

Though Fulvia and Profectus move to follow your orders, they still complain. {Can we at least wait for Chrys and Darzi to wake up? I don't want to go diving into the hole at more or less half strength.} Profectus whines. Chryssa chimes in a moment later. {I will be mobile soon, it should not be a long delay.} Darzi speaks up, finally, though she hasn't heard the rest of the conversation. {Don't you think it looks ominous? I'd rather just set camp here, wait for my limbs to unlock.}

Ugh, why does everyone have to be such a drag? What if this is a shortcut to the surface? What if it leads to treasure? Sure it may end with all of your deaths, but the chance of that seems remote. Once your part is gathered you clap your hands together, preparing to turn and stride into the void. Though you suppose they do have a point. It might not be a bad idea to just wait for a while.

>Wait until everyone is able to move on their own.
>Nah, just plunge right in. It ought to be safe.

I'll make the next post in a new thread then. Take a shower in the interim. Maybe fix another cup of coffee.
