A long time ago, you were a peasant lad living in a farming village. A small part of an empire forgotten by history.

You were blessed with a rare intelligence which led you on a quest for adventure & riches but events spiralled out of your control, you became tangled up in the schemes of a dead god that was ancient even in your time & your life was tragically cut short.

But that was not the end of your journey, you were brought back as an undead creature after pledging yourself to that god. You have come to know as 'The Pale Tree'. Seemingly not content with having you as it's earthly representative, it manipulated your childhood love, Kassa into making a similar Faustian pact. She too became one of the undead, committing horrific acts of murder & cannibalism in exchange for eternal love.

The enemies of The Pale Tree quickly caught up with you. They were determined to destroy you & all traces of the power living in your dead flesh but it proved beyond their ability. Instead they sealed you & Kassa away in sacred caskets, tossing you into the deepest oceans of the south & her beneath the advancing glaciers in the north.

You slept away entire eons. An Ice Age has come & gone, sweeping away all that you knew, a new world has been built whilst you slumbered....

More than 110,000 years have passed, you find yourself in London, the year is 1899 and you are a specimen for the scientists of The Royal Society. The circumstances of your awakening are unclear.

Three men stand around you, it would seem that they are responsible for bringing you back to the waking world.

The eldest among them speaks, his tone inquisitive & cold.

"That even one of your kind could survive for so long without nourishment is as disturbing as it is remarkable. Tell me, who are you? Where did you come from?"

Do you:

You note the man's use of 'your kind' and wonder what he knows or thinks he knows. You decide not to trust these men.

You paint yourself as the prince of a forgotten kingdom. Noble & kind, you were loved by all your people. Then your princess, your great love, was struck dead by plague. In your grief you made a pact with dark forces, trading your soul to conquer death. Your people did not understand what you had become & in their fear turned on you & your beloved. They sealed you away....until now.

The man listens to your story without comment, one of his companions writing everything down.

"Good" He says when you finish, it seems he believes you. "Do as you are instructed and you will be rewarded".

He picks up a pair of long iron tongs & uses them to grasp a glass beaker filled with what you know to be blood. He passes it to you, being careful not to come within arm's reach.

Without thinking you gulp the contents of the beaker down, dropping the empty beaker on the floor in your haste, you follow it with your eyes & notice that on the floor around you is an unbroken circle of white powder.

The blood is not as nourishing as you might have hoped, but it helps.

All three men watch you with interest.

What do you do?

The man ignores your questions.

He begins speaking to his companions as though you were not there. He slowly walks around you, pointing at you with a thin wand.

"Subject is male, physically appears to be 16-18 years old yet we know he pre-dates currently accepted human history. Clearly possesses the ability to reason & has all of the visible features of a 'type 2' vampire with an important exception."

He points to the enduring spear wound in your chest.

"All vampires are known to retain the wound that ended their mortal life & in all observed type 1's & 2's this has been a bite inflicted by the 'parent'."

"This specimen has no bite on his body, the fatal injury appears to be a puncture wound to the chest, likely caused by conventional means."

He pauses.

"This gives me reason to believe that we finally have before us an example of the hitherto unobserved 'type 3 vampire'. Before today the only reference to such a creature was to be found within incomplete Byzantine manuscripts. It arises spontaneously without the intervention of another of it's kind!"

You don't know what to make of all this but the men seem very excited by what their colleague has just said.

What do you do?

This worries me that Kassa woke up way before us and is now the traditional dickish vampire of lore.

>>
>>32572621

You examine the area. You are in a large wooden room, the shape reminds you of illustrations on amphitheatres you once saw. Yet this room is entirely indoors. The numerous seats are empty, you & the three men are the only people here.

There is a geometrically perfect circle of a fine white powder sprinkled around you.

The men themselves are unremarkable, middle aged & well groomed, they are wearing folded layers of black & white garments you've not seen before. Each of them has the bearing of a scholar. One is wearing what appears to be some kind of butchers apron over his other clothes & a large pair of gloves. Another is writing notes in a leatherbound book.

>>32572882

"What exactly do you want?" you ask of all three men.

"What do we want?" The butcher replies incredulously.
"What we want is to study you, that we might better understand how to wipe the plague of your kind from the face of the earth."
"We will learn all we can from you, then we shall put to the test the assertions of the ancients, that your particular strain 'cannot be destroyed by the hands of men.'"
The note-taker chimes in,
"Should it prove true, we shall return you to your box & lock you away in a place where no one will ever find you."

These men are obviously not your friends & are confident in their ability to hold you against your will. You are unsure if you are what they think you are, but seeing as you still know so little about what you've become they may know more about you than you know about yourself.

What do you do?

You grab the table & shove it against the circle with all your strength. To your suprise, just before the table touches the powder it encounters an invisible wall of force & will not budge another inch.

You release the table and try to feel out the barrier with your hands, you cannot penetrate it from within but you instinctively sense it's limitations. You think that if you were well fed you could break through with brute force. Starved & weakened as you are however, you arent going anywhere for now.

The men seem unimpressed by your efforts.

"Do you truly think we would risk waking you without a reliable means to hold you?" The leader asks with palpable contempt.

He produces a silver disk on a chain from his clothes & glances at it, then turns to the butcher.
"Dawn will soon be upon us, when the sunrise renders it inert take it to the cell prepared in the cellars. We have much to do."

The note-taker tries to speak but instead begins a series of deep, wracking coughs. He holds a kerchief to his mouth & when the coughing passes it comes away bloody. He wheezes in obvious pain.

You listen & observe, searching for something you can turn to your advantage.

What do you do?
>>
>>32573707
Well, the note taker is weak and maybe suggestable, do we have any abilities besides being immortal?

You don't know the extent of your abilties & weaknesses, you havnt had much of an opportunity to find out. The things you currently know:
+Can sprint at roughly the same speed as a horse.
+Stronger than you were when you were alive, but to what extent is unknown.
+You were able to sink into the soil to avoid the sun.
+You black out in the daylight hours and come to when night falls.
+Killing people and drinking their blood restores many of the sensations of being alive for a short while and is intoxicating.
+You had some kind of limited psychic link with Kassa, but you dont know how it works.
+Gripped by the bloodlust of your first kill, you were able to reach out and grab someone who was much further away than the length of your arm whilst standing in the same spot. You dont know how this happened.
>>
>>32573923
Try to sink into the ground then.

>>32573923
Do we have some kind of sensation when we use our abilities? Something we can try to feel and use a power, try to hypnotize the sick one

+You have thorns instead of teeth
+You are colourblind except after feeding but can see in the dark.
+You have no sense of smell except after feeding.
+You can sense a warmth that comes from living humans.
+If Kassa was anything to go by, you dont have any eyes. Just empty sockets filled with impenetrable shadow.

>>32574137
Previously, emotions could be shared and intent suggested. She's stuck in a box, so I imagine we may not be able to sense her.

>>32573738

You reach out with your sixth sense. Theres some kind of interference, you think it must be the circle that surrounds you. You can still sense the warm lives of the three men though. The leader and the butcher are strong but the note taker, he flickers and sputters. You can feel a malignance in his chest, it's growing stronger whilst he grows weaker. It will kill him & soon. He fears. You consider speaking to him, but reason that it would be foolish to try & do so whilst the others are present.

The unpleasant sensation of the rising sun creeps up on you and as suddenly as a candle-flame being snuffed out, you lose consciousness.

Gonna make a quick snack, will continue shortly.

>She's stuck in a box,

We don't know that anon, she got put in a box before the last Ice Age. Hell she could've been up and about at pretty much any point in the past few thousand years. All of these vampires are coming from somewhere.

You come to in a stone room with no windows, in place of one of the walls there are steel bars with a door worked into them.
Lines of the same white powder run along the bottom of every wall & the bars.
Your senses tell you that you're beneath the ground.

Behind the bars, sat on a wooden chair with a small table & lamp beside him is the note-taker. He regards you.

"It seems as if at least one of the tales about you is true. We exposed you to the midday sun for 3 hours with no sign of deterioration."
He continues.
"Type ones come apart almost instantly under the Sun and the most resilient type two was reduced to ash in less than one hour. Most impressive."

You wonder why he is telling you this, what does he possibly have to gain?

What do you do?
>>
>>32574689
Let him keep talking; use our intellect to subtly manipulate him.
>>
>>32574689
Let him continue, find out what he wants before we start making offers.
>>
Where the fuck did everyone go? This thread is awesome; don't let it die!
>>
>>32574689
Question him about these "vampires".
>>
>>32574689
Ask him about anyone else like me.
>>
>>32574987
>>32574998
Both good ideas but lets see what he says before we start asking questions, that way we try to hide our ignorance, don't want them knowing just how little we know
>>
>>32574689
Let him talk, find out what else he knows about our condition. "May I ask what order or group you belong to?"
>>
>>32574736

You try to keep him talking and gain some information at the same time.

You ask him what vampires are. He seems baffled you would ask such a question but indulges you.

He describes a vampire as a reanimated corpse that feeds on living blood. There are known to be two kinds:
Type Ones are feral creatures lacking the capacity for conscious thought. They feed mindlessly & spread disease until put down and are incapable of reproducing. They are perhaps as strong as three grown men. They are destroyed by decapitation, destruction of the heart, immolation, starvation and sunlight. Those who know of them consider them merely dangerous animals to be hunted.

Type twos are another matter, they possess all the intelligence and knowledge they had in life. They are able to create type ones at will as well as other type twos in rare circumstances not well understood. They are known to have the strength of at least 20 grown men as well strange supernatural abilities that seem to vary from creature to creature. They can only be destroyed by destruction of the heart, followed by decapitation or direct sunlight. They are thankfully quite rare and are often insane.

The note-takers willingness to tell you all of this strikes you as strange, you get the sense he wants to ask you something but cannot work up the courage.

What do you do
>>
>>32575137
Try to sense how his affliction works. Try to connect it to knowledge we had or have read. Ask him about it, and try to use that knowledge to see if we know of anything that can cure or prevent this disease.
>>
>>32574689
you seem different compared to the others, You dont regard me as some vermin that needs to be wiped out. At least not as much as the other two did. Why is that?
>>
>>32575137
Try to encourage him to keep talking but don't draw attention to your more inhuman features, don't want to freak him out
>>
>>32575137

>>
>>32575198
>>32575200
>>32575227
>>32575231

You suspect you know what he wants to ask you. You think you can coax it out of him.

"The sickness in your chest, it's killing you."

This doesn't seem to come as news to him.

"I know I'm dying" he says. "I've tried to make my peace with it, but I'm scared. I don't want to die, I have children I want to see grow up, theres so much I want to learn."

He turns to you, but seems unable to meet your gaze.

"You died once, you must have. Please I know I've no right to ask but just tell me what happens, does it hurt?"

You can see that this man desperately wants some kind of assurance to keep him going. You remember when you were in a situation not so different from his. The memory stirs in your mind, it's vividness is such that some of the shadows cast by the flickering lamp seem to take on the shape of twisting branches.

What should you tell him?
>>
>>32575544
Its different for different people. For me it was somewhat painless. But for you it will be long and painful from what I can since.
>>
>>32575544
We need to strike a deal, even if we are truthful or not. He gets what he wants if we get a chance to escape
>>
>>32575544
It was pain beyond belief, for what felt like a lifetime, then darkness.
>>
>>32575544

>>
>>32575672
ahh yes, but we need to have him be wanting to live as a vamp. right now he is asking us about how we died. So lets some what ease into.

sorry if it seems like im pussyfooting around, any other time id be all for going full blown out in the open join us. but since we are trapped right now we are limited in our options if this fails.

You have a certain sympathy for this man, but you need to use this to your advantage, you rise to your feet to tell him what you think he wants to hear but before you speak you notice something is....off

His lamp is burning dimmer than it was, the shadows in the room seem to have a taken on a life of their own & theres no doubt about it now, you can see the shape of hundreds of grasping branches. In spite of all that you've become, you shudder. The ever-present cold inside you sharpens, the note-taker's breath becomes visible in clouds of condensation.

Something encircles you....

You open your mouth to speak but what comes out is not your voice, it's not a voice at all...

***YOU ARE DEAD BUT YOU NEED NOT DIE***

I thought we'd become like the Pale Tree and come full circle, offering immortality. Not that we had a way to spread our blessing to our knowledge.

But it seems there's no need. God is with us. Always.
>>
>>32576101
Each word carries entire lifetimes of possiblity, bursting with dreams & memories, growing, wilting & dying in the space of a single moment.

***I CAN SAVE YOU FROM THE VOID***

The note-taker is completely overwhelmed, he's trembling, his pupils are wide as saucers.

***COME, RELEASE ME***

He fumbles with his keys, turning the look to the metal door, he shuffles inside, his will shattered by the presence bursting out of you. His foot scuffs the line of powder, breaking the link.

Suddenly the presence is gone, but with the barrier broken you release that it wasnt just holding you in, it was suppressing your *nature*. The biting cold rushes back into your body a thousand times worse than it has ever been, your gums itch with anticipation & the warmth of the note taker's life is so close & the need for it is like a drowning mans need to draw air.

You give in to your instincts. You seize the note-taker in an iron grip, you squeeze so hard that you feel his bones begin to fracture.

The skin at the corners of your mouth tears & your jaws open impossibly wide. You bite down into his throat, crushing cartilege & bone with sickening pops & hisses of escaping air. Warm blood fountains into your mouth & it tastes like life & warmth & the sun on your face, strength flows into your limbs and you gnaw on his neck like a starving dog, you've chewed through so much his head comes off, hanging from his neck by a thick strand of gristle. You squeeze his body like a tube of toothpaste trying to suck up every drop of blood, bones snap & pulverized organs slide out of place.

You've taken all he had & for a brief moment you smell the hay in your families old barn & feel Kassa's soft warm lips against yours, promising all the joys of a live you'll never be able to live.

Then it's over & the human being you were having a conversation with a few minutes ago is now a scarcely recognizable pile of broken bones & viscera lying at your feet.

Your ears are filled with the sound of a howling alien wind & the creaking of a thousand pale branches.

Roll for sanity loss! First roll decides. 55+ is success.

It also made us lose most of our senses and manipulated our girlfriend into killing herself.

The others aren't here.

And will be smarter and more protected.

>We chose to be like we are because we wated to keep a promise to her,
Uh what.

Pretty sure "I don't want to die" was enough of a reason.

>acting independently
Your very life and existence is tied to the Tree. There is no independence short of the grave, and even that is questionable with the state of your soul.

Thank the tree I didn't bother to try and type some snarky remark with that roll.
>>

OP, you gotta do final destination style voting for contentious votes. Prevents samefagging.
>>
>>32576905

What success? Successfully resisting or successfully going insane?
>>
>>32576910

man, It can still live, we just don't need to act in its favor. It will not end well
>>
>>32576920

Success! you retain your sanity for now.

>>32576961
>final destination style voting
Forgive my ignorance, I dont know what that is.

Next part incoming...
>>
>>32576905
Dude you really need a time limit or to refresh or something. Because it ended in favor of Resisting 8 to 6.
>>
>>32576905
If there's sanity loss, is there a sanity meter now?

And a hunger meter?
>>
>>32576981
>act in its favor
Like what? It has demanded very little beyond our feeding on blood.

Because we're hungry.
>>
>>32576983

put the options numbered like this:

1 give in
2 resist

the voters can use only the numbers, if there is anything more on the post the vote will not be considered. the voting window is 5 minutes because we can't post identical posts in a 5 minute window
>>
>>32576356
+Resist!
>>
>>32577031

Thanks, I'll do that next time.
>>
>>32577027

you know it will not stop there. it wants it's former glory back, it is mad because it was forgoten.

You stand still staring at what you've done for a moment before making for the door & not looking back. It wouldnt do your mind good to dwell on it.

You notice the note-takers book is on the table by the entrance to your cell. You pick it up & take it with you before looking for a way out.

You seem to have found an exit to the street level, a ladder leading up to a trapdoor, but you notice another cell like yours just off to the left.

Do you make your break for freedom or investigate the cell first?

You quickly head for the cell.

It's built in much the same way as yours, although theres no lining of powder around the room.

In the corner someone is huddled in a filthy pile of rags. As you reach the door a pale face regards you with empty eyes. Its a woman in her late 20's. There's no warmth coming from her & theres a faint trace of something familiar, a kinship...

"How did you get free?" She croaks

"It doesn't matter" You reply, before tearing the door off of it's hinges.

You offer her your hand. "Come on, we're getting out of here."

Knew it. Knew it wouldn't be a guy vampire.

Thats all for tonight folks.

Wont be able to continue for a few days due to night shifts, so part 5 will be coming on Sunday 1600 GMT.

Hope you enjoyed & I'd appreciate it if someone archived the thread.

As always I'll lurk for a little bit for feedback/questions.

I really like this quest and I'm waiting to see how things work out

My pleasure, I'm glad you like it.

Any cool stuff you can hint about the sun god?
>>
>>32577666

He's more of a construct than a being, a prototype that's since been refined. That construct is very much still around in several different forms.
>>
I can't wait to ask the new type 2 vampire, presumably, how she perceives color and smell.
