Forgotten Overlord Quest

You were once the most powerful being to grace your planet’s existence. Through cunning, strength and sheer willpower, you carved a mighty empire across the lands. Your empire was the scourge of all who opposed you, the envy of any conqueror, and your magics made you a god among men. At the cusp of your victory, you’re achievements have been denied. You’ve been banished to a strange new world you know nothing about, with nothing but the tatters on your back. But still, this is but a setback.

While your assets may have been denied, your ambition has not. In the new world as in the old, you shall rule

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible. Unless specified otherwise, the best of 3 rolls is the result, and rolling high is good.

Write-ins for all votes or always welcome and encouraged. Put your own spin on it, suggest dialogue, add an addendum, or anything else. Just because only some options specify to write in, doesn't mean that they aren't welcome for anything else. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Remember, you’re a fucking overlord. Act like it.

Previously on Forgotten Overlord, your new ally, the sleazy lawyer Samuel Goldman, has gotten you the proper identification papers and given you a place of residence. You are currently in his graces, and you see him as a useful ally to obtain wealth and power.

Currently the two of you are meeting up in a diner, discussing the finer details of your arrangement and planning out what to do next.

“So there you have it Shay.” The lawyer said, taking a bite of his burger, before continuing. “... And thats how our little operation works. I give you the contracts, you do the job, work your magic and everything- bam, both of us come home a little bit richer. And if anyone tries to get you into a bit of legal trouble, you know who to call.”

He places his business card on the table, which you place into the pocket of your new suit. “Same thing if you need help with this country. Any question about how things work here, I’m your guy. Although you probably should start watching TV, you’ll get the answers there quicker.”

Been working on an upgrade system and magic tree in the meantime. Its not going to be put into use yet since we’re effectively still at the tutorial. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh, and here’s a list of the magics I have so far as a teaser:

-Fire (Sub magic: light): Incinerate and immolate. With more training, set off explosions and shoot energy beams, just like in your Chinese Cartoons.
-Water (Sub Magic: ice): Water and ice, from cooling your lemonade to parting the Red Sea
-Air (Sub magic: lightning): I couldn’t think of anything good to say, so just know you can be either an airbender or a sith lord or whatever.
-Earth (Sub magic: TBD): Move rocks, create golems, forge metal, set off earthquakes. If it involves dirt and whatever you can find in it, you can use it.
-Life (Sub Magic: TBD): You can heal things, from paper cuts to full blown regeneration. Or control/create plants. Maybe manipulate animals? Up to you.

As always, any non retarded suggestions are appreciated.

Maybe a domination magic? Aura of "OBEY" if you will.
>>
>>32577708
Maybe have it sort of be a 6 element system instead. Like, the traditional 4, plus order and entropy. Basicly standard thaumic magic elements. Order would have a subset of mind or life, Entropy would have death, Fire would be light, Water would be ice, yeah, Air would be lightning, Earth would be gravitational. Something like that might work?
>>
>>32577842
>>32577970
Those are very good ideas. I'll use them.

“So, what’s my first job?” You ask.

“Friend a mine, goes by the name of Kenny, needs some muscle to help, obtain a product and redirect it to our southern brethren in Sonora. What this means is you’re going to have to take a truck and bring it to a safe location, of which he’ll tell you. Sound good?”

“Reasonable.” You answer. Its a bit annoying how you must lower yourself to lowly footsoldier, but one must serve before they can lead.

As Sam tells you where and when you need to meet up, and who will pick you up, an older man, probably nearing 50 winters or so, approaches the table and pours some coffee in both you and Sam’s cups. He looks at you, chuckling and shakes his head. “Try not to get killed kid. Sam here has a way

“Who are y-” You begin, before getting interrupted by your partner. “Relax Pops, my boy Shay here can take care of himself. He’s new but I’m sure he can handle the game just fine.”

The man now known as Pops just raises an eyebrow and rolls his eyes. “Sometimes I wonder why I don’t report your ass.”

“Because you owe me you life several times over?” The lawyer quickly responds, slightly grinning

“Yeah, yeah. Don’t start that crap again. Anyways, I’m Pops, or at least that’s what everyone calls me. Now, I know you’re busy and all, but in the interest of soothing my conscious, come by here and I’ll give you a tour of how things work. I’m sure Sam here has left out a few… important details during your job interview.”

You nod and thank the old man for his offer, as Sam gets up from his seat.

“Pops, put today’s meal on my tab. C’mon Shay, lets go to your place and get you ready for tomorrow.”

Do you follow Sam, or do you discuss a few things with this man?

“I’ll see you some time later then.” You reply to Pops, who gives a wave as you leave.

The two of you report back to your new home, a small 2 room house in rather run down neighborhood. The place looks exceedingly… ungraceful. Nonetheless you are grateful for actually having a place, and proceed to tour the area. Inside, you hold back the urge to cringe. The place is no where near fit for a conqueror, being rather dirty and obviously in need of some repair. At least the kitchen is fully stocked and the bathroom looks sanitary, even if you need to learn how to use all these machines.

But again, beggers cannot be choosers.

What do you think, I got this for such a low price it was practically a steal.”

“A steal you say?”

“Hey! I am an honest businessman! I make sure I get things and pay whoever sells whatever their worth.”

Your eyes twitch at the implications.

“Worthless no. No, nothing of the sort. Just, er, of limited real estate value.” He quickly replies before trying to change the subject. “Anyways, lets finish this and and I’ll see you in a few days when you finish the job.”

The man finishes introducing you to your new home and how things work, and you get acquainted with it over the day.

The day after, while watching television and falling into complacency, you receive a call. Picking up the phone, and slowly putting it to your ear, and pressing as many random buttons as you can- you have little idea how this damn machine works), you hear a voice on the other line.

Its slightly raspy; if you knew better, you’d guess this man likely a chain smoker.. “So, you’re the guy the lawyer mentioned? They, uh, specialist?”

You hang up the phone, musing that must be who Sam mentioned at the diner.

An hour or so later, you hear a few quick knocks on your door. As you open, it you realize who this man is. He is large and burly, with a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

“Get in, we got work to do.” He quickly says, pointing to his car at the back.

As you enter the vehicle, you realize there are 2 more people going along.

“Alright, let’s get to work people. We’re going to take ourselves a shipment of contraband and deliver it to our buyers today. Now the plan is simple: We intercept the target at a rest stop, we take their things, we make the delivery. Sound good?”

The other two in the car readily agree, one replying “We got this boss”, while the other smiles aggressively. It appears he’s excited.

From the back seat, you reply

“No introductions? Have you no manners?” You reply, annoyed at this mans tone.

He turns to you, an equally annoyed look in his eyes. He takes a drag on his cigarette. “No, we don’t.” And puffs right in your face.

The disgusting fumes make you cough. You scowl, such insolence should be punished, preferably with lightning. But you are wise, you withhold your rage, instead deciding to impress them with your performance. You savor the thought of the look on their faces once you unleash your might. Outwardly, you remain calm and collected.

The journey is not too long, you estimate the ride to be an hour or so, nothing compared to the weeks you’ve spent on campaigns.

When you arrive, the man tells you we’re at a Truck stop, and our target is a silver-blue Mack Truck. He doesn’t tell you what that means, but you simply follow one of your compatriots.

15 minutes in, one of your teammates reports that he’s found the target. The truck is parked, with its rider walking towards the truck.

“So, that’s it.” You mutter. “Let me get this, you offer.”

“Alright man, let’s see what you got. Remember, be quiet.”

You crack your neck and make your way to the target, grinning wildly all the way.

“Its good to be at work.” You say to no one in particular.

Perhaps a bit of persuasion, is in order….

Working in the shadows, you make you way to your target, remaining hidden all the way.

Channeling your magical aptitude, you summon the wind and bind it to your will. Your voice, already impressive, becomes a haunting whisper in the distance.

“Leave, you say to the man. Leave…. now.”

He turns around, a chill working his way up his spine. He turns to his side, looking for the You repeat again, this time your voice no longer a dim whisper, but a low, warped growl.”

“Leave, mortal. Return the safety of the light.

“What the fuck?” The driver calls out, now turning around and looking for voices. “Who’s playing tricks here?”

You continue to repeat, to haunt and to torment. After a mere 8 minutes, he caves in, running back to the gas station in fright, giving you a window of opportunity to complete the job. You make your way as fast as you can to the truck, stopping only because your partner calls you.

“Its a gift.” You reply. “Nevermind that, lets finish this.”

“Man, you should be one of ‘em voice actors or something. Put yourself on the cartoons and shit.” He begins, before realizing you’re at the truck’s window and not the back.

He chastises you for your unfamiliarity, angrily whispering “The fuck you doin’? Shipments back here dumbass!”

“Calm yourself boy.” You reply, using the Overlord voice. Stiffening up, he nods dumbly and apologizes profusely as you make you way back. “Yeah, sorry man.”

In any case, as you arrive your partner pulls out a communicating device (walkie talkie) that you aren’t familiar with.

“We’re here, make your way to the target and lets get this done.”

“Roger that, we’ll meet you right quick.”

After a minute of waiting, the other two in the crew arrive at the truck.

The smoker, Kenny, pulls out a small tool kit from a bookbag he wasn’t wearing before. Perhaps he kept that in the car? Never mind that.

You see him pull out tool that, at the press of a button, a small flame emerges. “Get ready boys”

You tilt your head in curiousity "What an odd item you have there." You say, watching him go to work and try to open the door.

And then your patience runs thin. "Ugh, this this is taking centuries."

“You got something better smartass? Eh, can you get this shit open in 30 seconds or less?” Kenny irritatedly replies. You sigh in annoyance. You’re going to have to teach him some manners after this job has been completed.

With a sigh, your face goes into a complete 180 from annoyance to joy. You smile cheerfully, before spontaneously lighting your hands in white hot fire. “Yes, yes I can.”

Without giving him time to reply you channel the flames into makeshift blades and carve your way through the metal.

Less than a minute later, you’ve carved a man size hole through the truck’s back door. With a mighty tug, you pull off the door, and (as much as you can) gently try to move the door to the truck’s side. A thought goes through that this might be evidence of your crime, but you have more important things to worry about. Thankfully for you, Kenny had you wear gloves.

Upon placing the door out of the way, you return to the group at hand, all shocked at the supernatural feats they have witnessed.

“Oh, there was a lock. We’ll, why didn’t we just cut off the lock and open the door the way?” You casually ask with a tone of genuine surprise.

Kenny opens his mouth to reply, but shuts it. He opens it again, but the words just don’t come out.

“And you criticize me for being unfocused.” You say, arms folded in judgement.

“Yo I was wondering that too man.” One of the crewmates says, breaking the awkward silence (and replacing with an ever . “Like… I was like, it would make more sense to just cut the lock- shit would have been a lot less work, saved us a good minute or two, but, but, you know I didn’t wanna be ‘that guy’ to point that shit out, you know?”

You nod solemnly. “Its fine. It certainly isn’t easy being the one who has to go against the tide and speak out. I applaud you for that.”

“Ay, thanks man.” The man reaches out to you, extending his arm what appears to be a handshake.

>Return hand shake

At the same time a voice to your right speaks. “Fuck Sam. How does that asshole manage to find all the weird people. Seriously, first it was the hooker who with the pet bat and now its a fucking magician.” You hear Kenny mutter to himself as he makes his way to the inside of the truck.

“Pick that up” you point to the still lit cigarette on the floor, “You could start a fire.” The man merely turns around with a look of anguish and a forced smile, before his partner steps on the cigarette for him.

“Thanks Tom”, you hear him say as he makes his way deeper into the truck.

There is nothing wrong with showing some respect thru a hand shake. But to each their own.
>>
>>32581174
"overlord" is seldom used in a non evil context, you realize.

But yes, I'm sure those heroes banished him over a misunderstanding of his true and pure motives in bringing the world to its knees in fear.
>>
As you turn back to the man offering you a hand, you eagerly take it, and shake his hand. Once that’s finished, you turn back and see the remainder of your crew loading off several tightly wrapped boxes.

Kenny, who has now regained his composure, explains what’s occurring. “What we got here is a couple dozen kilos of meth, all nicely packed into these boxes. How we got this info that this truck was going to have them in none of your concern, but what you should know is that we’re gonna drop these kits off at a warehouse around 20 miles southwest of here. Once we get there, we’ll be paid and we’ll drop you boys home. Sound good?”

“Sure.”

“Yeah.”

“Fair enough.”

“Alright then, everyone get to work.”

The package is loaded onto the car without a hitch. The crew make continues their drive. It is a quiet affair, with little chatter. Eventually the crew arrives at their destination: an old warehouse.

All of you exit the car, but do not follow Kenny. He insists on making sure everything is fine and will handle the negotiations himself.

Kenny calls out to the warehouse, and a man exists the building. He looks like a common thug, not out of place with the men you’ve been working with.

“Where’s Jorge?” Kenny asks, trepidation in his voice.

“He couldn’t come” The man at door replies. “I’m handling the drop off for him.”

“No, that’s bullshit. Jorge never misses. Never in the 6 years I’ve worked with him. The fuck’s going on?”

“I’m telling you its a one time thing, no need to worry.” The man tries to reassure.

Kenny’s paranoia gets the best of him however. “Fuck this, we’re outta here guys. Something’s wrong.” You open your mouth to protest, but close it upon realizing he’s right.

Across the warehouse, at the entrance, you see the other man scowl and mutter something under his breath. “Alright then..." He scowls, before yelling out "FREEZE!" and pulling out a pistol

“THIS IS THE DEA! LAY DOWN YOUR WEAPONS NOW AND GET ON THE GROUND!!” At that very instant, multiple hidden officers make themselves known. So it really was a trap. Kenny might be an insolent bastard, but he has good instincts it appears.

“SHIT, ITS A FUCKING STING!” One of the crewmen yell, before pulling out his pistol and ducking for cover. The others follow suit, and take cover behind Kenny’s car. Kenny himself manages to safely make it beside a wall.

Both sides mobilize for the upcoming fight. None have fired a shot yet, and the tension is palpable.

You have not moved however. Instead you have stand in the middle, luring your prey for the trap.

An undercover officer slowly makes his way toward you, his gun pointed directly at you.

“We have you surrounded, there is no escape. Get on the fucking ground now with your hands on your head, face down! You see the officer yell at you.

Your calm disposition seems to irritate him, and he orders you to capitulate immediately and threatens to shoot if you do not comply.

As he walks toward you, you contemplate on how to deal with this pest.

>Massive lightning shocks to the face. Let these insects know who they are dealing with.
>Use air magic to cover the place in a mist, and kill everyone

Lightning maybe? There's no single 'disarm' magic per say, but you can be creative with what you have.

>>32581804
You could probably use earth magic to bury them, although the warehouse would show obvious signs of someone tampering with it, what with all the dirt and what not.

Would make for hell of a story in the investigative department.
>>
>>32581593
You smile at the officer as he walks ever so closer to you. “Do it” You goad him, and he quickens his pace towards you. As he reaches striking distance, you take a deep breath. He hesitates for just a second, wondering what you’re planning, which gives you time to act. You exhale, releasing a thick mist from your lungs that quickly spreads throughout the area, never mind you’re in the Arizona desert.

The miasma rapidly engulfs the warehouse, covering everything and everyone. With this, it is your time to strike.

Water is cooled into ice and ice is shaped into a blade, giving you a rudimentary fighting tool. Crude, but effective.

Shots ring out, as one would expect, but you do not fear them. You are above human, and simply dodge the rounds that get too close (although one or two might have grazed your sides).

“The fuck is this mist? We need backup now!” One of your opponents cries out. This is good. They fear you. They know they cannot win, and are attempting to even the odds with reinforcements.

Commendable, yet foolish. .

With the mist, the police are distracted and unable to focus, while you take them out one by one, stabbing them in their vitals, their gut or their neck. Either one gets the job done.

“WE NEED IMMEDIATE BAC-”. You were slow on that one. It seems the radio overheard everything. No matter, they didn’t see your image nor record your voice, and that’s the important thing.

Within 2 minutes, the warehouse runs quiet. The mist wears off, and what is seen is a pile of corpses.

“I thought they’d be more exciting.” You say to yourself, before calling for the crew.

They are alive, if shaken by recent events. You turn to them, and call out.

>Lets go home

Banking.

Bankers make world wars.

Soon, we'll start buying businesses while expanding in the drug trade, pushing out all competitors as we launder obscene amounts of money.

In the end, we'll live the scarface fantasy in a huge mansion in Florida.

The American dream in action. Or you could go international, probably take control of the drugs at the source in a place like Colombia or Afghanistan, maybe even instal a banana republic or two like in the DRC.

“So, where do we drop off the delivery now?“

“We don’t man.” Kenny answers. “Not today, not while the heat is too much.” He pauses, trying to catch his thoughts. “What we’ll do is I’ll drop you guys off, and I’ll contact my back up dealer. He’ll know what to do, and will take the shipment off our hands and see to it we get paid.”

“Sounds reasonable.” You reply. With that you get back into the car, along the others. Miraculously, they appear to be unharmed.

And so, you and your crew begin your journey back to the town, where Kenny tells you that he'll contact you at the very least next week with your payment.

Unbeknownst to you, a police radio sends a message. “Officer Roberts, please respond. Officer Roberts, is everything alright? Please respond?”

“No, we’re not fine.” A voice meekly responds to the radio.

Despite your best efforts, you had failed to kill every single agent that was after you. Frozen with fear, an agent stayed hidden in the bowels of the warehouse, and managed to slip beneath your radar.

“This is Agent Grimes reporting….” He licks his lips in trepidation.

“Agent, please tell us what’s happened?” The voice in the radio asks.

“I…., He… He, he KILLED EVERYTHING!!” The man cries back in anguish.

“Agent please calm down.”

“NO, FUCK YOU! Everyone's dead...” He pauses, trying to choke down the tears…

“We’ll send a squad car to pick you up and you’ll recount everything that happened. But please, you must remain calm. Lives are at stake.”

The man barely manages to keep himself together and sofly replies after many seconds of silence. "...Yeah"

As the car arrives your home, you bid your crew goodbye, but not after exchanging contact information for future endeavours. Kenny in particular has asked for your aid in many a job. His demeanor to you has changed, as does his tone. There is more respect…. but also a hint of fear in his words.

However, all bid you goodbye and you retire to your house. The day was useful, if a tad boring. But the prospects for the future are exciting.

Santa Barbara Police station:

“Agent Grimes.” A monotone voice calls out.

A relatively young man enters the room. He is visibly shaken and quiet. As he approaches, he looks to the man who called him with dead eyes.

“Good morning agent. My name is Jack Salcedo, and I’m here to help you.”

“...Help me?”

“Yes, help you. I’ve received reports you behavior has significantly changed since your last case, with you suffering what appears to be some sort of mental trauma due to events that occurred last… Tuesday was it?

“Thursday.” The man dully replies.

“Right. Officer, what did you see during your operation. We need to know this. You report mentioned something… supernatural was it?”

“What I saw…”

also known as twice, this is only the 4th chapter. And we agreed early on to be discreet when we learned that magic is considered non existent in this world by general public.
Also, see last thread discussion about corrupt businessman who assassinates his rivals with magic that looks like they had an accident
>>
>>32583001
The cat has been out of the bag for a while since lighting oneself on fire. and not melting a truck door. it's really too late for that.

the fogicemurder was the most discreet thing tonight really.
>>
>>32583026
It is only too late when the public at large believes in it. until then it is a matter of quantity of rumors and believes which varies fluidly rather then being a yes/no binary thing.
>>
>>32583026
>the fogicemurder was the most discreet thing tonight really.
we could have done fog escape.
or just regular escape with discretely dodging bullets (what rotten luck, we kept on missing the guy).

That being said, fogic murder is more discreet as any witness can't clearly see exactly what happened. only that it happened.
>>
>>32583064
then the current level of discreet is exactly sufficient and "more discreet" isn't needed, since he does not go into daylight or public, only associating with black market goons.
>>
>>32582414
>I saw a demon
>>
>>32583026
Eh not really. Until that ends up on the news no one's really going to believe one guy's story of someone magically lighting themselves on fire.
