Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you stumbled through a strange portal on the urgings of a creature made of shadow and witch light. Now you find yourself trapped in a twisted wasteland.

You reach into your cloak, pulling out a single golden coin. “Is gold valid currency here? All I have on hand are gold and silver.” He stairs at you oddly for several moments before. At least... you think he does. The lack of proper eyes is throwing you off but his eyebrows are scrunched together and he's facing your general direction. “If you try to pay with something using solid goddamn gold you're going to be laughed out of the store. Nobody trades in physical goods anymore. You're going to need to pawn it off somewhere and get a fistful of Ay-Woo if you want to buy anything.”

Profectus is the first to speak. “What on Earth are 'ay-woo'?” The man reaches into a pocket on his jacket and pulls out a small rectangular card made of a strange, rigid material. “A.W.U. Aggregated Wealth Unit. It was put in place by the City to ensure that every citizen has a vested interest in advancing the good of the City. Their value is determined by the total amount of land, holdings, and other assets held directly by the state. Thus, the more powerful the government becomes the more valuable your money is.”

Fulvia cuts in here. “Would not wages adjust to match the value of currency, thus eliminating any benefit the system might have?” The man shakes his head. “Wages for the vast majority of professions are mandated by the state. They remain constant while the price of goods fluctuates.” Fulvia's projected appearance adopts a distasteful look. “What about debts? As money becomes more valuable would debts not grow as well?” He shrugs. “They do, but since wages are constant it's not that big of a deal. Truth is I don't really know entirely how it works, just the gist of it.”

You glance towards Profectus pointedly and then raise another question. “How does one go about renting a dick? I believe finding the answer to this question will be vital to ensure the health of my friend here.” You clap Prof companionably on the shoulder, though he protest. “I can keep it in my pants, Mik. I'm not going to go running off to bang construct prostitutes the minute you turn your back on me.” Your host cuts in here. “Well just in case you do want to take a tour of the Red District, you would want to stop in at a clinic first. They cannot actually replace your junk with a rented model, but they can do just about anything else you'd imagine. Seriously though, I would just avoid the Red District all together.”

Chryssa shoots the two of you a glare before asking her question. “Who were the Visitors?” Your host shrugs his shoulders. “Nobody is quite sure. They're a legend from the Golden Age. Humans who could manipulate the elements and heal wounds with a wave of their hand. Supposedly they left a device in the Tower, the original Tower mind you, that would allow us to enter their world and for them to return here. It was lost after the Mutagenic War and the Tower's collapse, the new one is built atop its ruins.”

>>
Profectus speaks next. “What are corporations, supermarkets, amusement parks...? I mean, I suppose amusement park is somewhat self-explanatory but what's inside it?” Your host sighs deeply. “Right, right. Okay, so you can think of a corporation as sort of like... a guild. A really big guild. Except instead of being devoted to artist or merchants or crafts, they're devoted to engineering and all sorts of things really. Almost every facet of life is controlled by some sort of corporation and each corporation is a subsidiary to one of the state departments, though in practice it's the other way around. The corporations practically control the state. Supermarkets are just what they sound like, vast markets where you can buy food, furniture, clothing, all sorts of nonsense. Think of them as Grand Bazaars, except they're on every corner. Amusement parks are places filled with rides like... roller coasters, tilt-a-whirls-” He pauses, apparently noticing your lack of comprehension. “-It's sort of just something you have to see to believe.”

You resolve to eat your soup, since your host is looking rather weary after your party has interrogated him. Chryssa does raise one more question though. “What's lynching?” He briefly mimes a being hung by the neck. “Refers to a mob of people ganging up and killing someone. Usually they're hanged, sometimes they're burned or beheaded. Sort of depends on the cult in question.”

Really fucking regretting passing out after the first couple of posts last thread.

So I guess our tentative plan is going to involve locating what ever device is in the ruins of this "Tower" all the while being seen as even crazier than we normally are?

I think we should ask whether our appearances are going to pose a problem.
I mean aside from a couple of tall ass dark elves, we have a guy with a stone arm, a chick with horns, and an unshackled (and increasingly corrupted) A.I. And the armor we have on, of course.

“Are there any settlements near-by? Besides the city, that is.” You ask your host while he's busy slurping down a spoon full of stew before responding. “I've heard that there are other cities, though I've never seen one. A couple wastelanders like myself have banded together to the south, formed a little independent conclave. They're not very friendly though, especially not to city-goers. They find a pass on you they'll run you off. Shouldn't be a problem for you five. If you wanted to meet them you'd just leave my little abode and keep going strait until you hit a trail. I heard there were some folks living in the forest too but I think that's all a load of crap. Nobody could survive in those woods.”

“How would we reach the City, if we wanted to that is?” You think he's looking at you skeptically but it's difficult to tell. “Man, you can see it from outside my house. Just walk towards the giant glowing tower. You'll hit a patrol eventually and if you just tell them you snuck out and got lost they'll give you a slap on the wrist but otherwise just lead you back to the city. Technically nobody is allowed to leave or enter without a pass but it's an open secret that the gate guards are lenient. If you want to make waves tell them you're an envoy from another city and demand an escort. You'll probably get to meet some big wigs even if they might behead you should you get found out.”

You gesture to your party as a whole. “Will our appearance cause any sort of uproar?” He shrugs his shoulders. “No more so than mine. As for the clothes and the ears and whatnot, people will probably assume you're performers, or that it's some sort of fetish thing. The girl isn't grotesque enough to be a mutant and Rocky here doesn't have to worry about a thing, prosthesis with artistic facades are really popular these days. Elves are sort of an entity in our collective imagination, supposedly a lot of the Visitors were elves.” He waves a hand dismissively. “You'll probably be fine. I'd worry more about sycophantic hangers on than angry mobs.”

Fulvia pipes up. “What about me?” He looks at her for a moment, flipping down his bulky metal helmet to cover his face. When he speaks, his voice sounds alien and artificial. “What about you?” She seems uncomfortable under the scrutiny. “Well, I am a construct. An artificial intelligence. Will that not cause alarm?” He flips the helmet up again. “Maybe, if you go around telling people. A lot of people are leery of AI, especially in the White District, but you can pass for human. Personally I think keeping them enslaved is a travesty.”

Conversation after that turns towards lighter topics while everyone focuses on eating. You learn that he survives of trading and scavenging way out here in the boonies. He also occasionally offers his services as a guide to patrols passing through, though that has gotten him into some trouble in the past.

Offer him something for his assistance? We do have a fuck huge amount of goods in the cloak.

Also, I want to try meditating. If there isn't ambient vys here so we can replenish our reserves things could get bad quick. It is probably not the the case, but better safe than surprised.

70-80 is killing them
80-90 is killing them and then eating them
90-100 is killing them, eating them and then writing songs about good they tasted
>>
“How much is gold worth?” He shrugs his shoulders. “I don't really know off the top of my head. The price is determined byweight, they'll do a few test to confirm purity. I think it's a few hundred ay-woo per ounce of gold but I could be wrong. The price sort of depends on the demand for jewelry and certain electronics, so if it's the beginning of the social season gold price will be high. I'm not the guy to ask, frankly.” Well, a few hundred 'ay-woo' certainly doesn't sound too bad, though you don't really have a frame of reference. For all you know a hundred ay-woo only buys a single meal.

You sit and eat in silence for a short while, trying to decide where you'd like to venture off to after this. The City sounds like your best bet if you want to get out of here. You'll probably need to dive into the ruins beneath the Tower in search of that device he mentioned. Then again, he said the Mutagenic war was only eighty years ago. That's the blink of an eye, in the broad scheme of things. If these people had a device that let them enter your world you'd expect to see a lot more of their influence than you do. Maybe it was broken before it was lost? What if you're trapped here?

(1/2)
>>
You banish such thoughts from your mind and pose a question to your host. “Could you tell me more about the City and the Conclave? Just, in general. Will I need to jump through any hoops to get into the city?” He nods his head, but doesn't respond immediately. Instead he leans back in his chair and cocks his head to the side contemplatively for several moments. “Well, to get into the City you'll need to get an implant. It's a little chip under the skin of your arm. Most people get them at birth, but if you're born outside the walls you can migrate so long as you sell yourself into indentured servitude. You'll have options of course, you could be a sub-city scavenger, a prostitute, a miner, they've got all sorts of undesirable task that need doing.” He shrugs his shoulders. “Of course, once you have the implant you can skip out on your duties and do your own thing, or pay your way out of servitude, but if you skip out they'll hunt you down.”

That doesn't exactly sound... pleasant. Would've been nice If he'd lead with that instead of just tossing it out as an afterthought. “What about the Conclave?” He shrugs his shoulders. “That one is easier. If you just show up they'll probably let you in but you'll have to put up with some crap, might get into a fight or two until you prove yourself useful or dangerous. I could vouch for you, which might save or cause you some trouble, but it's kind of a hike. We're talking two days at least.”

An anon suggested we wait until the Water Temple until we fix it. I assumed that anon wanted to use water magiks to fix it
>>
“In that case, we'll head for the Conclave. I would rather not get trapped doing manual labor here for who knows how many years. I had plans, you know. Obligations to keep. The faster I can get out of here the better I'll feel.” He nods his head. “That's probably wise. I mean, there are ways to get into the City without getting chipped. They're usually more dangerous though. I've occasionally had to go through the Sub-City to pick some things up. Last time though I nearly got my head taken off by a mutant the size of a truck.” Profectus speaks up here. “What's a truck?”

Your host just shakes his head. “Don't worry, you'll figure it out eventually I'm sure. Listen, if you'd like to wait until tomorrow I take you to the Conclave and vouch that you're not murderous assholes as far as I know. Otherwise you can set off now and you'll probably find it, it's not that hard. Pretty big place actually, a few thousand people strong. Not the metropolis that is the City but, you know.” He shrugs. “You'd need to sleep on the floor or in these chairs though. There is only one bed and I'm not big on sharing.”

>Set off now, you'll find your own way.

Hey Soma, if at some point Prof and Chryssa are good enough in their elements, would it be doable have some some of training with them trying to destroy one of our construct (a wall of ice or earth) while we try to repair the damage slowly over time?
It could be good for them too since it'd force them to control their vys.

We don't need to put the core in there and I'm not saying we make the golem as soon as we hit X level. We still new to more Metas for that. Just saying we get earth up some so when we do it's not as draining as it should be at our level. Plus Fulva said they work best when Slaved to her I rather wait until we solve her corruption before we give her the Anti magic golems.
Also I got the idea that it'd be harder to modify anti magic golems than regular golems due to their core. Rather have a small unit of "regular" golems at the ready than having our rarer anti magic one on the front fighting giant rabbits and shit.

“We'll rest here for the night and head out in the morning. We appreciate all the help, by the way. I would've expected to be met with more skepticism to be perfectly honest.” He shrugs his shoulders, he does that a lot come to think of it. “All I did was answer some questions and I'll be taking you to a place I probably would've been going anyway. It's not a big deal. Besides, you look the part of strange inter-dimensional travelers. Wielding swords, wearing heavy armor, you performed god damned actual magic.” He gestures towards you emphatically when he says this. “I'm convinced.”

You make light conversation while everyone finishes eating. Your host goes off on a long tangent about his days as a Sub-City Scavenger. Apparently you can find all sorts of stuff down there. Old technology, villages of beggars and thieves, mutants from the forest. Apparently he once found an old undetonated mutagenic bomb down there, though he had to turn it in to the City once they found out about it. Nearly got him arrested, apparently. Eventually the night winds down and your host retreats to his bed for the night, pulling a curtain attached to the ceiling around it to afford himself some privacy.

Once you're certain he's asleep you lean forward to speak with Fulvia. You wouldn't want to let slip that she may go mad and start killing people to anyone who doesn't already know. “How are you feeling, mentally that is? When I put your core in the cooling unit there were black spots all over it.” She cocks her head to the side and thinks for a moment. “I suppose I feel slightly more megalomaniacal than I usually do. I have been envisioning myself leading an army of construct to crush the puny human cities and raise the banner of Rhynia over their ashes. However, I have not yet felt any compulsion to harm you or anyone specific.”

You still don't like the sound of that. The last thing you want is your friend to become completely and comically evil even if she doesn't want to hurt you. “Could you tell me a little more about that idea you had, to drag me into your core so I could fix the problems manually?” She nods her head brusquely. “In order to perform such a task I would need to gather vys. This region is relatively low on ambient vys, so it would take several days at the least. You would then need to meditate while holding my core to ensure the task could be performed as safely as possible. Finally, once you are inside my core you will need to be careful. Everything in there is representative of something else, and should you destroy anything other than what you need to I will likely suffer as a result. What it is exactly that you'll need to destroy, I cannot be sure.”

“In that case, you ought to begin gathering your vys now. When you're ready to cast the spell alert me, because I get the feeling that the longer we wait the worse this is going to get.” She nods her head. “Very well. If it is any consolation it seems to be progressing slower in this world than it was in our own. I would posit that the more vys present the faster the corruption will spread.”

With the Fulvia situation more or less handled, you reach into your cloak and pull out your Five Effects book. You've got about two chapters to go before you complete the section of the book on Manipulate. These last two chapters seem to be about what sorts of theoretical uses Manipulate might have. They're prefaced by the author stating outright that he's never heard nor seen anyone able to perform any of the task he's about to describe. It's all rather wordy and ominous for an effect as simple as manipulate, you really wouldn't expect it.

The first chapter goes into detail about Manipulates possible uses with Metal magic. Beyond the obvious effect of enhancing one's ability to shape and move metal the author posits that it may enhance or control the mental effects in some way, or perhaps even allow one to manipulate the mind of others in some limited extent. Of course, he doesn't particularly have any evidence to support this. Manipulate doesn't enhance the healing capabilities of Water magic nor does it allow one to extend the range of their extrasensory perception with Nature magic. Overall he considers it tenuous at best, and would guess that Nature and Metal magic in conjunction with the Vys metamagic would be more likely to allow one to control minds in some limited capacity.

You hope she's picking the language up at least, however slowly. {Yes, we're going to be returning home eventually. It will be a rather involved task though. We need to enter that City in the distance and perhaps rediscover an ancient Rhynian device. First though we're going to see a conclave of wasteland survivors, to see if they might know anything and simply to explore. How often are you thrust into a reality other than your own, after all?}

Darzi responds after a brief pause. {I suppose you are right. It is not like I have anything waiting for me in our homeland.} Ugh, why must this woman always be so down on herself? She needs to cheer up! {Right, so enjoy this while you can. You can go back home being the only woman in El-Amin to ever venture through a Rhynian portal. Maybe you'll even find something over here to bring back that you can sell for a fortune, live the rest of your days in a mansion.} She doesn't respond, but she does at least begin to participate in the conversation between the rest of the party. Gods, sometimes you feel more like a parent than a leader. Maybe that comes with being the healer.

You resume reading, finding that the next section details Manipulate's possible uses with the legendary Time metamagic effect. Only one Vatis in modern history is said to have known the Time effect, a Grandmaster Rostam who burned the scroll he learned it from. You can't help but sigh. You read that guy's journal, you know what an asshole he was. It doesn't surprise you in the least that he'd burn a scroll to deprive his rivals of it. It is believed by the author that Manipulate, in conjunction with the Time effect, may allow one to slow, stop, or even reverse time itself. The possibilities would be limitless.

Oh my
>>
You close the book and set it aside. You've read ten chapters now, only fifteen more to go. You tuck it away in your cloak once more and reach down to pick up the dragon egg you'd brought with you. You're surprised that your host didn't ask about the massive egg encased in stone. The egg is still quite warm, you can feel the heat radiating off of it even through your armor, but it has definitely cooled since you arrived in this world. You've no idea if dragon eggs actually need heat to survive, but it seems appropriate.

So it looks like we're going to have them all work together to keep the egg heated, but I'm seeing some ideas tossed around that we should have them meditate using the egg or that we should meditate with them.
