My name is Cecile, and I'm sixteen years old. Though I'd like to think that my upbringing was pretty normal, my parents got a really good job offer last year that would force them to move to the opposite end of the country... and that was the end of my "normal childhood."

I've lived in this one town all my life, and my parents really didn't want to uproot me from everything that I've known in the middle of highschool... but the pay that they're going to get from this new job is really stupidly high.

To be honest, I can't really blame them for taking it.

They did take pity on their poor daughter though, deciding to keep the house that I grew up in and letting me live here while they go off and get rich. At first, that sounded like a really good deal... but then those news reports started popping up about bizarre murders and attacks throughout the country.

And that's why they convinced my big sister to stay here for college and act as my babysitter.

It's not -too- bad of a living situation, but some days it gets really aggravating...

...like today.

As I scramble to throw my clothes on as fast as I can, I mutter every swear word I know... Somehow I managed to sleep in until TEN FREAKING THIRTY, and now I'm super late for school!

Allison's classes don't start until noon, why the heck didn't she wake me up!?

I get dressed in record time, racing out of my room and straight to the kitchen... and Allison's stupid behind is sitting at the kitchen table, eating a plate of waffles.

"Oh, I was wondering when you'd decide to get out of bed," she says to me through a mouth filled with food.

"Allison, why didn't you wake me up!?" I shout as I walk towards the table. "You KNOW that I have class today!"
"What, I thought you were just skipping or something," Allison replies as she continues stuffing her face. "I mean, I used to skip all the time when I was your age..."
"Yeah, and it's a miracle that you were able to graduate!"

Mom and Dad left her here to look after me, doesn't making sure that I get to school count as part of that!?

"Meh, it's no big deal..." Allison says, twirling her fork around her fingers. "Calm down already."

And before I'm able to react, she shoves the rest of her waffle in my mouth.

I -was- going to steal it off her plate to start with, but the part that she bit off of is still attached... ugh, I hope I don't end up catching something from her. But seeing as how it's already in my mouth, I eat it anyways. No sense in wasting food, after all.

"Now that you have something in your stomach, are you feeling better?" Allison asks with a big stupid grin on her face.
"...shut up," I mumble as I head to the fridge and pour myself a glass of orange juice.

While I chug down the sweet orangey goodness, Allison starts blabbing on about some guy that she met yesterday... not that I care, she has a new boyfriend like every other day. And besides, I'm still mad at her.

"I'll be late tonight, so don't wait up for me," Allison calls out to me as I run to the door.
"As if I'd do that to begin with," I mutter back.
"Oh- and a package came in the mail for you like a halfhour ago!"

Huh? A package? But I didn't have anything coming on any time soon...

"I'll look at it later, I really need to go!"

With my shoes on, I rush out of the door...

This is not the place for this argument, so I'll just leave it at saying that that is incredibly untrue.

...screw it, there's no sense in racing straight there, I'm already late as it is. After doublechecking to make sure that I have all of my books and homework and that kind of thing, I swing my backpack around and make for the long way.

When I'm actually ON TIME, I like to cut through the park and see how the garden there's doing... considering that I've been awake for maybe twenty minutes now and am already all pissed off, being able to look at something pretty would probably do me well.

After maybe ten minutes of walking, I find myself about a block away from the front entrance of the park.

"Huh?"

Not too far away from me is a lady with long blonde hair and a really fancy black-and-white dress... and she's crouched down by the curb.

"Oh," I say, kneeling down to get a better look. "Umm, is the cat still alive, at least?"
"Yes, but he's in a lot of pain," she says as she gently strokes the top of the cat's head. "I think his leg's broken, too."

"Umm, let me see if I can find a vet nearby," I say to the lady as I take my phone out of my pocket.
"You'd go that far to..." she the lady stares at you. "...thank you. And I'm sure that he's happy to see that a nice girl like you cares about him as well," she says, glancing at the cat.

It's kind of weird to be thanked by strangers, but now isn't the time to start feeling embarrassed. As fast as I can, I do a search for veterinarians in this city and then check the addresses to see if there's one within walking distance...

"I found one, but it's like a forty-minute walk," I say. "It's no big deal if you happen to have a car nearby, but I dunno if you want to-"
"That won't be a problem," the lady says, cutting me off. "Could you write doen the address for me?"
"Sure," I nod.

And while I go through my backpack for a pencil and a piece of paper, the lady starts talking.

"S...P...D...B..." she says as if she's reading off an eye chart at an optometrist's office. "R...K...R."
"Umm, what?" I ask.
"My associate," she says, looking off into the distance, "he found the car that hit this cat. That was the license plate number."

After I finish writing out the address of the vet's office, I do the same for the plate that she just said. SPDBRKR... "Speedbreaker?" At least it's easy to remember.

"Umm, here's the address," I say as I hand her the paper. "And there's the plate number in case you forget it."
"Thanks," she nods. "This will definitely help a lot. Now I just need to pick this little one up..."

It looks like she's going to carry him all the way there... but the cat's fur is matted with blood, and that dress she's wearing is REALLY fancy, what with all those frills... not to mention that she's wearing a pair of lace fingerless gloves.

"Um, let me take care of that," I say as I crouch down next to the cat and open up my backpack. "I don't want you to get blood on that expensive dress and ruin it..."

Luckily I was supposed to have gym today (and I'd actually be there right now if I didn't take this detour) so I have a fresh change of clothes with me. Pulling out the old shirt that I was going to wear, I gently pick up the cat while taking care not to touch his broken leg and place him on top of the shirt. Once I'm certain that I'm not going to get blood everywhere, I gently pick both him and the shirt and get back on my feet.

"Well yeah, but this is more important and-"
"No, that won't do," she says, looking me right in the eyes. "I have the address for the vet and the plate number of the car that hit this cat, so that's plenty of help right there."

She then holds her arms out towards me, and I carefully hand the injured cat over to her. She's being REALLY insistent, and I do still have to go to school...

"Thank you again for you help," the lady says, nodding to me. "I've only been in this town for one day, and already I've run into a kind person..."

And before I can even say "you're welcome," she turns around and hurries off in the general direction of the vet's office.

While I am hungry, I'm not so starved that I'd actually resort to eating cafeteria food. That's why I usually bring my own lunch to school... but it's not like I had time to make anything this morning.

But if I'm lucky, I might be able to mooch some food from my best friend Mina... so I head onwards to the usual spot where I eat lunch- the library. Nobody ever goes there at this time of day, and the librarians are nice enough to not mind us eating there as long as we clean up after ourselves.

As I enter the library, I nod to the old lady behind the counter and glance over to the table where I usually eat... and there she is, already chowing down.

Taking care to keep the shadow that I'm casting thanks to the lights overhead doesn't give away my position early, I slink towards the unwitting Mina.

step

Holding my breath the entire way, I'm every bit as stealthy as that eyepatch guy from Mina's videogames... and soon, I'm right behind her.

And she's still COMPLETELY oblivious to my presence.

I feel like a massive creeper right now.

But I can't help myself, this is way too good of an opportunity to pass up.

"Wwwwwilhhhhhhhelminaaaaaaah..." I whisper, blowing right into her ear, "You should have been paying more attention to the things around you..."

And midway through a bite of a sandwich, Mina's entire body goes rigid as stone. She stays like this just long enough for me to fully enjoy the satisfacting of scaring the crap out of her before her neck slowly creaks towards me, moving almost like the hands of a clock.

"CcccccecilewhattheFUCKiswrongwithyou!?" she stammers, before following with a chain of swears that are cut short when she starts choking on the food that's still in her mouth. I feel kind of bad for scaring her -that- badly, but it was still worth it.
"Sorry, but I couldn't help myself," I say, bowing my head in apology.
"You stupid f-" she slaps her hand on her forehead. "You didn't show up for the morning classes so I thought you were sick or something, what the hell!?"

"Yeah," I sigh, "I dunno if it was that my alarm didn't go off or what, but I overslept pretty bad. And Allison didn't bother to wake me up, so I was out until like 10:30...'
"I have no idea why you expected her to wake you up," Mina replies, shaking her head. "You know that she doesn't give a damn about what you do as long as you're not like endangering your life or something."
"Yeah, yeah..." I mumble.

And then I tell her about my detour to the park and everything that happened with the fancy lady and the injured cat... that definitely seemed to pique her interest.

"So like, you stop to hit on a girl and now you're a hero or something!" Mina laughs.
"Shut up, you know it wasn't like that," I roll my eyes.

"Yeah yeah, your heart is as pure as driven snow," Mina says as she tosses me a bag of chips. "Here, your reward for a job well-done."
"Thank you, milady," I reply, playing along with her goofiness.
"So did you get her number before she left?"
"You know that I'm not-"
"She was all dressed-up, right? Maybe she's like, rich or something! C'mon, Cecile, you could've gotten a reward for helping her out like you did!"

She's actually right, come to think of it.

"That's now why I helped," I say as I open up the chips and begin devouring the contents.

Salt and vinegar. Not bad.

"I know, you're always one to help when someone needs it," Mina sighs, "and speaking of which..."
"I don't have any cash on me, if that's what you're asking," I say, glaring at her.
"That's not what I was going to ask, dammit," she mumbles. "I found a really cool book online, and I wanted to know if ir qas okay with you if I had it shipped to your address."
"Huh? Why can't you have it shipped to your own house?" I ask. "What, is it porn or something?"
"No, dumbass..." she sighs. "My dad's been giving me trouble about spending so much on my hobbies, and having stuff shipped straight to my house is just like -asking- him to bitch at me."

She -does- waste a ton of money on videogames and those weird occult creepypaster books that she loves so much, I can't really blame him.

"So how about it?" Mina asks, making puppydog eyes at me. "You'd be willing to help out your best friend, riiiiight?"
"I dunno..." I reply.
"C'mon, just think of it as making up for scaring the hell out of me just now!" she points at me. "...and besides, it's already on the way to your house as we speak."

"Ugh..." I grumble. "As recompense, I shall help myself to the rest of your sandwich," I say as I take it right out of her hand.
"C'mon, I would' e given that to you if you'd just asked," Mina replies.
"And now you know how I feel," I take a massive bite out of the sandwich. "What kind of book is this supposed to be, anyways? It seriously better not be porn."
"It's not porn!"
"And the last time you had something sent to my house, it was that weird hypnosis book... Allison was CONVINCED that I had a mindcontrol fetish for like a month after that, you stupid jerk."

"No, it's nothing like that either," Mina shakes her head. "and that hypnosis book turned out to be a load of bull, anyways.
"That's not the point," I retort. "Now spill it, what kind of weird crap did you have sent to my house? I don't want to be put on some kind of FBI watch list because of you."
"It's nothing gross or illegal," she sighs. "Last week, I found a website that looked like it was something out of like, the mid-'90s or something, the kind of thing that you'd find on Angelfire back then!"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," I roll my eyes.
"So ANYWAYS," she clears her throat, "it was really cheesy with a bunch of bad animated gifs and stuff..."

I have no idea why she thinks things like that are cool.

"So whoever made this site was selling a book that they claimed 'unlocks the hidden potential of the mind,'" Mina says excitedly. "Doesn't that sound so incredibly awesome? Like it's straight out of a creepypasta or something!"
"So you bought it," I continue eating the sandwich.
"How could I not!?"
"And then you had it sent to my house."
"Well it's not like I could have it sent to -my- house, the thing was sent from overseas and they put the value for stuff like that right on the packaging. My Dad would murder me if he found out how much I-"

"Never mind how much I paid for it," Mina says, avoiding eye contact with me. "But the really weird part of this is that- get this-" she edges in closer. "I checked the site like an hour after I got the shipping notice, and it was GONE. totally 404," she says in a whisper. "And the domain address was listed as unregistered too, even though I was just there! Isn't that like, SO creepypasta?"
"I have no idea what this creepypaster thing is, you nerd," I say as I stick the bland end portion of the sandwich in Mina's mouth so she can stop assaulting my ears with her nerdery.

So she found some scam site and threw a ton of money to get a scam book, and then had it sent to my house Great.

"Yeah, sure," I say to her. "But I'm gonna read it before I hand it over to you."

"And it was sent to my house in my name, so technically it's MINE," I cross my arms. "Consider this the price that you pay for not asking first."
"That's not fair..." she pouts.

With that issue dealt with, I spend the rest of our lunchtime in the library asking Mina about what's happened in school before I came in. Me and Mina have all the same classes together (thanks to some schedule manipulation on both of our ends), so it's not too difficult for me to get caught up with the stuff I missed.

Luckily, nothing of particular interest happened, aside from one of the boys at gym class farting for like a minute straight when he got knocked over during warmups.

I'm really glad that I wasn't around to suffer through that.

With that done with, the two of us make sure to clean up before we head to our next class. We don't want to get on the librarians' bad side, after all.

"Ugh, next class is trig," I say, slumping onto Mina's shoulder. That's like my absolute worst subject, and I die a little every time I take a test in that class.
"Quit whining, it's not like you don't always copy my homework in that class as it is," Mina says as she pushes me off of her.
"It still sucks, though," I reply. "Stupid state education standards..."

I know I'm whining I do not care. With low spirits, the two of us make it to the classroom and head to our seats at the side of the classroom by the window.

"Cecile," Mina places her bag on her desk, "are you -sure- I can't convince you not to read the book before me?"
"Nope," I give her my sternest frown. "What's done is done and my mind shall not be hanged."
"No fair..."
"Book?" a voice calls out from behind me. "What are you two reading now?"

I turn around to see who it is, and it's exactly who I was expecting- our classmate Theresa.

She used to hang out with me and Mina all the time, but then she joined the track team and we kind of drifted apart because they practiced so often... she had to quit at the end of last year when she broke her leg, but we never really became close again.

Mostly because Mina seems to have a grudge against her for something, but I try to stay out of stuff like that.

"It's nothing important," I say. "Just Mina being stupid again."
"...oh," Theresa replies. "I thought that maybe you guys boiught that new-"
"It's nothing that has to do with -you-, Theresa," Mina glares at her. "So there's no need to worry your pretty little head."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to-" she shrinks back into her seat. "Sorry for bothering you."

After some more begging in Mina's part (and denials on mine), the dreaded trig class begins. And it's like forty minutes of my brain being scrambled. Who the hell thought that it would be a good idea to make this crap mandatory? The only thing my being enrolled in this class does is lower my overall average.

Luckily, I manage to survive to the end, and the last two classes of the day are actually to my liking so I don't suffer too much from that. I do get the stink-eye from a teacher whose class I missed thanks to my oversleeping, though... I'm definitely going to have to explain myself tomorrow.

But that is enough worrying about school for one day, for now I am free!

"Mind if I come over to hang out, Mina?" I ask as the two of us exit the school grounds. "Or you can come over to my place, Allison won't be around to get drunk until late."
"Sorry, my Mom decided to eat my day with some stupid social thing," Mina grumbles. "So I won't be able to hang out at all."
"Oh, that sucks," I droop my head. "There's always tomorrow, though..."
"Yeah, that there is," she nods. "See you then."

Unfortunately, me and Mina live in completely different parts of town so we end up parting ways right away. And now I have nothing else to do for the rest of the day.

I guess I might as well head home. I'm pretty sure that package that Allison was talking about is the book that Mina bought, and I do want to make sure that I read the whole thing before I hand it over to Mina. But I do feel kind of bad for Theresa, too...

...meh, I have plenty of time. I'll just go and say hi to see how she's doing before I go. Assuming that she hasn't already left, that is. Me and Mina always try to be among the first ones out of the building though, so she's most likely still inside.

I don't know the specifics of why Mina has such a grudge against Theresa, and I'm not going to pry about it. But as long as I'm staying out of it, I'm officially "not involved" so there's no need for me to pretend that I hate her too.

"Huh?" I furrow my brow. "It ruined everything?"
"N- never mind that, forget that I said anything," she waves her hands in front of herself.
"If you say so," I shrug. "So you're not doing track anymore... what have you been up to instead?"

"That sounds like a good idea," she nods.

The folks who have afternoon clubs and stuff are starting to filter through the area... it's probably a good idea for us to get out of here.

"I think that we're in the way now," I say, laughing nervously. "But uh- you wanna stop by my place and hang out or something? My sister's gone until late and Mina's off doing whatever with her Mom, so it's not like there'd be anyone around to bother you..."

We don't have anything else to do at this point.

I'm assuming we picked up the work we missed from school, so no need to linger on here.

BOOK BOOK BOOK
Don't think about how you have no friends that want to hang out.

lets go check up on the cat that got hurt, we still got the adresse for the vet right?

I never understood the difference in effect between a psychic and a mutant.
>>
>>32607713
That's actually a good idea. Let's look up a public transportation route though, don't want to spend 1.3 hours walking.
>>
>>32607750

Well, to be fair, we don't have anybody throwing a party for us this time.

With nothing else to do, I head on home... and as expected, Allison is nowhere to be seen. After tossing my backpack on a chair, I walk over to the kitchen table and pick up the package that arrived earlier.

"The address... I've never even heard of that country before," I say out loud. "And the price... holy crap she spent THAT MUCH on this!?"

One hundred.

And seventy dollars.

On a book that she bought on a whim from an impossibly shady site on the internet that doesn't even exist anymore. What the hell is wrong with her, of course her father would freak out on her if he saw this! Hell, -I- want to tell her off for wasting this much money!

With a sigh of total exasperation, I open up the packaging and slide the book out of it and onto the table... This thing doesn't even seem to have a title, just a blank blank cover with a weird picture of a tree on it.

At least it's hardcover. It had damned well better be, considering how much Mina spent on it.

I might as well be comfortable while I read this thing, so I head up to my room and close the door behind me, then I move the stuffed animals off of my bed so that I'll have somewhere to lay.

And then I open up the book. No title page, as expected. And the first page of actual text is interspersed with weird diagra

And that is all for tonight.
Or today.
It was fun running something new for a change, and I thank you guys for sticking around. Hopefully it was interesting enough to keep your interest.

I'll be running this on Friday night as well, and the next Princess Guard will probably be on Saturday night seeing as how my plans for the weekend are kind of totally shot now.

I'll be up for a few minutes longer so if there were any questions or comments you had about this here false dendrite thingamabob, feel free to post.

And thanks for playing!

It was interesting, but I'll withhold judgement until the plot appears for now. At least it has potential!
>>
>>32608237

Cheers. Waiting for the inevitable "how do I shot web" freak-out.
>>
>>32608237
I, for one, am anxious to solve the mystery of the druids.
>>
>>32608237

Would you say this quest takes place in the same world Princess Guard Quest took in or does it take place in a new world/setting altogether with no connections to the previous quest?

Like say this takes place in the present and PGQ happened in the past.
>>
>>32608237
But archelon.
We need a clarification.
Who is best girl?
>>
>>32608289

He already said it's not in the same setting. I think it's quite evident that this is our world.
>>
>>32608297
We are best girl. All other girls are weeds to be removed.
>>
>>32608289
>Would you say this quest takes place in the same world Princess Guard Quest

Dude there are fucking cars. And cell phones. Unless we're about to get flung through a portal in time, into the future where Monique's evil is law, I think it's safe to say that they don't take place in the same setting.
>>
>>32608307
>casualfag
We can't be best girl anon, I'm sorry.
>>
>>32608289
Completely unrelated to Princess Guard, the setting here is more or less the real world.

>>32608297
hahaha you assume that you have met best girl yet
>>
>>32608345
>Best girl still undiscovered
U-unbelievable...
>>
>>32608387

You know Archelon likes to unveil best girl after the route lock.
>>
>>32608345
But Arch, every girl is best girl, in my heart.

My heart is a slut.

Mina x Theresa OTP
>>
>>32608787

Theresa is boring moeblob nerd. Come at me.
>>
>>32608076
So we are playing as tree that is weed to everything while burning everything into void?
>>
>>32608827
>not wanting to waifu the moeblob nerd
Right back atcha.
>>
>>32608828
No, clearly our mind was just blasted apart and our body is now being puppeted around by a minor elder god like a meaty suit.

The rest of the quest is Mina and Theresa overcoming their personal issues in order to destroy the broken flesh monster/ harbinger of the apocalypse that was once their friend.
>>
>>32608828
>>32608930

It's obvious that our neural system just got rearranged to turn us into a superior being who can do magic with his brain.
>>
>>32608930

If I don't get to spend the romance part of this quest matchmaking our two soon-to-be-magical-girl friends I will be very unhappy.

The cat we saved will become our transforming catboy familiar.
>>
>>32608957
So we became magic tree that is Yggdrasil clone?
>>
>>32608990
>magical girls
>familiar
>CATBOY familiar
Please no
>>
>>32608990
>>32609022

But is it an half-fae?

>>32609010

No, we gain the psychic magic brain because new neural network, which looks a bit like a tree. Jesus, get your science-fiction straight.
>>
>>32609068
So we got treebrain?
