You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You are descending.

The dark is old and musty, like something left down here to die, like a heady cough. You’re used to being able to see in low-light, but this is no-light, every step taking you further and further from the surface. You feel vaguely as though you’re transitioning into another world – around you, beyond the omnipresent gloom, you hear the earth whispering in its sleep, roots stretching, worms rasping and struggling through the old loam. Old. This is all old. You remember Creeper telling you once that there are ancient tunnels under New York, that the city is just as deep as it is tall, that nobody could possibly keep a track of everything everyone’s ever buried in this town.

For a short, breathless moment or two, you feel as though you’re descending deeper than you could possibly be, that you’re about to start hearing the grinding of the earth’s bones, and the steady rhythm of its blood, and the tap-tap-tapping of dead men, digging desperately and blindly for a way up, a way back into the light. You’d shiver if it wasn’t so damn humid down here.

Your phone vibrates in its pocket. Down here, the pale light of the screen seems almost chthonic.

Laura and Lucas have apparently met up with the Hellions.

Okay.

Further ahead, you smell an abundance of rust, and you manage to stop yourself a few paces from walking straight into a tall, solid iron door. You reach out, tracing your fingers along its time-stricken surface, taking in the tiny inflections of its shape. It’s not thick, just heavy. It is pretty clearly locked, however.

no we are not. We were on a time limit for meeting with the Hellions because we told them we would be there at specific time. The plan was; we only went into the building for recon then we get out and the Hellions burn the place down. They'll burn it down whenever we tell them to. No time limit.

Smashing the door down and alerting everyone that we're here is bad.

I think that was before the incident with Broseph, but more to the point I think he clarified that we would be cut off until we resolved or triumphed over some personal trial, and then we would start building up x-points again.
>>
>[X] Try to force your way through.

Well, you overcame several very primal fears to get here. You’re pretty sure you should be able to overcome a door.

Feeling for hinges, you brace your shoulder against the opposite side, such your breath in, and put your back into a single, mighty heave. The door groans inwards surprisingly easily, metal hinges snapping free. It doesn’t quite go down in one push, just sag pathetically, but another two significantly less determined shoves later it keels straight over.

You cringe as the sound echoes through the dark. Didn’t think about that.

The prospect of being caught freezes you up for a moment, but as the seconds stretch on into minutes, it becomes steadily clearer that nobody’s coming. You breathe out a heavy, long sigh of relief, and feel your way further in.

The ground is level now, but the walls are still close. As you make your way deeper, an obscene, caustic sort of scent washes over you, growing thicker with every step. You couldn’t quite describe it if you tried – not totally. It’s like something bloated and foul just opened up and shat out a little spurt of all the worst things in life. It’s not rot, but it reminds you of rot. Reminds you of death.

Eventually the smell gets so bad that you have to stop for a moment, just to keep yourself from heaving up all over the floor. It’s almost like some kind of torture, like Creeper designed this place with you in mind. It’s awful.

When you collect yourself enough to continue, you realize that the air is changing, that the corridor is opening out. And you can hear heartbeats – twenty of them, at least, the dark magnifying them into a heavy, operatic rhythm.

>[Action]
>>
>>32613468
Do this.

To everyone complaining that strength will completely rule out stealth, just remember that Laura could still kick our ass along with a bunch of other people and we're not really less susceptible to injury. I see strength more for utility then just straight up combat.

Grapple hook isn't necessary with adhesive touch and wings. Bullet shield could just weigh us down when we could dodge, but I do agree for rope because this is /tg/. Rope is always useful.
Although cases where we REALLY need a shield can be solved by temporarily taking a manhole cover or ripping off a car door.

We just need weight. Grappling hook can be used to pull people, or to hook someone for constant shock. More utility than just weight.

We need permanent bracer, for when we go inside/put down the manhole cower.

Also we need rebar and manhole cower(s) to make cool shield. Remember we have strength , so we can theoretically use actual wall, or car as a cower now.
Iron man suit without engine is an actual option.
We should just get some non clanky armor, (basically we just leave our joints exposed., and wrap metal (that's wrapped in cloth). around chest, arms and legs, No speed loss because strength, and we are resistant to most stuff.

>(1/2)

The feeling isn’t a good one. It’s not fear, exactly – you’re used to fear. It’s dread. A lingering, cloying dread that nuzzles up against you in its rags and its wet furs, murmuring indecipherable somethings through cold, paralytic lips. Its fear divorced from any object, from anything tangible. Pure.

It doesn’t stop you. It probably should, but it doesn’t.

Though, does give a long enough moment of indecision to withdraw your phone and quickly update Laura on the situation.

Stowing your phone away, you decide to get a bird’s eye – or, at least, a fly’s eye – view of the place. You flex your fingers, feeling that strange, electrical warmth propagate under the skin, and feel for the nearest wall. It doesn’t take you long to stick your way up onto the ceiling (which, by the way, feels very weird. Humans clearly weren’t meant to challenge gravity in this specific way). You almost bump into the frame of a long, presently unlit, fluorescent light, but crawl over (under? Around?) it. You’re probably about three, three and a half meters up? Something like that.

God. God – the smell is worse. It’s like something from the beginning of time. Like you’re smelling the slow decay of the universe.

Blinking slowly, you twist your vision into the thermal spectra. You pick up a lot of heat signatures below – one for each heartbeat. None of them are mobile. Their personal coronas of shifting yellow-red warmth bleed out into their surroundings, revealing the vaguely humanoid figures to be stretched across a procession of tables – solid metal, if the way heat stews in them is any indication.

Beyond the heartbeats, you can hear the steady, rhythmic murmur of machines. The miniscule drip-drip-drips of fluids struggling their way through plastic packets. Reminds you – reminds your of your mother’s room, of the sounds the machines made when they were hooked up to her.

You don’t think you want to be here anymore.

>[X] There’s a light. There must be a light switch.

You can’t stop listening to the machines. You know them – they’re like old acquaintances. Uncles, aunts. Figures, leering vaguely through the dark. You remember them arrayed like idolaters, like ceremonial virgins, like executioners. You hold your breath, trying to block out the awful, awful, rancid horror of the smell, and brush it all aside.

You make your way down, feeling your way along the walls until your fingers trace their way around the outline of a light switch. You feel your stomach churn, almost as if preparing for the inevitable. You bite your lip, and bite, and bite, and are a little surprised when you taste iron.

You feel yourself flick the lights on as an echo along your arm, as if you’re observing it from a great distance.
>>
>>32614890

The closest sleeper – they’re sleeping, or something like that – seems sort of okay at a glance. He’s a young man in his late teens, probably around your age. Square jaw, eyes closed in placid blindness. His shoulders stretch out into tell-tale, mutated appendages, sort of like weird bone-feelers. They dangle at his side like discarded lengths of rope. The machines dig into him, an IV standing at his side, a monitoring device looming beside it. And he’s been cut into, often. His stomach is dominated by a long, expertly sewn caesarean, the rugged edges of the wound suggesting that it’s been opened over and over and over…

The one next to him is – oh, oh Christ – you – you –

You almost keel over, stomach writhing. An unreasoning, primal sort of repulsion comes over you, like a sudden fever, like bad meat. The image of her face – of that horrific, cancerous atrocity – seethes to the forefront of your mind, infecting everything it touches, its bloated girth forcing all other thoughts aside.

She’s not dead. None of them are dead. She’s not dead, but she’s rotting.

You fall to your knees and vomit noisily.

A specific scent cuts through the cloying vileness of the place. Smells like that stuff you woke up in, back at the factory. That clear, amniotic sorta stuff.

Christ.

>[X] Call Others

You – you breathe. You wipe the sticky remnants of the vomit from your mouth and try to ignore the taste. It’s not that bad. Not that bad. You’ve vomited in your mouth before. It’s not that bad.

The breath sagging back and forth in your chest, you pull yourself up, and force yourself to look again. The others – the others are in varying states of silent, comatose helplessness. Some are obviously mutants, some aren’t so blatant, but you’d hazard a guess that everyone in here has an X-gene hidden somewhere in their DNA. A good many appear to be in sort of okay condition – they don’t look hurt, aside from the incisions. They’re pale and their breath is barely a hint of a whisper, but they’re alive.

The others… the others aren’t just rotting. They’re unfurling, gestating, collapsing, seething through the borders of their own flesh. Their meat decays even as it mutates haphazardly outward, forming twisted, tumorous shapes that make your skin feel alien and cold. There’s one – you find one that, it’s not even recognizable anymore, it’s just spindles of flesh and bone, creasing and contorting, like someone stapled together all kinds of disparate creatures and just blew them all up, and – and somehow – sort of froze it still, in that initial, flicker-instant of writhing shapelessness, everything not quite together but not quite apart.

God. You clap your hand over your mouth. Oh, God, Christ…

You have to tell the others about this. You reach down into your pocket, fumbling with your phone for a few seconds, fingers feeling almost detached from your body, like all the blood’s just drained right out of them…

Before you can navigate your way to a number, a text pops up in the corner of the screen.

>Sender: Unknown.

Pausing, you open the message, the timing setting you a little on edge. It’s probably just something silly. Like a survey or something.

>I know you’re there.

You feel your stomach clench up and your skin crawl. Dropping down low, you glance frantically from one side of the drab little chamber to the other. Nobody. Nobody awake, anyway.

>I can feel you. Your phone. The little lights.

>It’s dark where I am.

You swallow. You swallow that horrible vomit-taste and that healthy dose of terror and that tiny little scream you have forming in your chest.

Your body has metabolic processes linked to each organ, remove the organ and the prerequisite molecules to these processes build up in the blood and sweat.

Oh yeah, they're totally fine.

To be fair there very well could have been people on the other side or a security system we didn't know about. Just because it worked out well this time doesn't mean it will next time. It'a always better air on the side of caution.

It's safe to say the one that's just a writhing mass of flesh is probably beyond saving. But the one's that are rotting but still human looking could probably be saved by healing vitae.

>[X] Ask who this is.

You calm down as much as you can. You remind yourself that, if someone was there, you’d hear them coming long before they saw you. Hell, you’d probably smell them – even through all this sickness in the air. You compose a quick text to Laura, telling her that she and the Hellions should be down here right now, and flick back to the anonymous message.

Who are you? You get a reply not three seconds after you hit Send.

>Next to the right hand wall, three from the door.

>Don’t remember name. Haven’t heard words in so long. All ones and zeroes to me, now.

Oh God.

You make your way along the rows. Soon enough you find the table, and you –

You feel something like a grunt, something like a sob, something you don’t know how to express. Something. The body is that of a boy’s, but it’s basically nothing now. Nothing remotely human. Nothing that could ever walk again, or feel again, or touch or talk or probably even breathe on its own.

Another text follows the last.

>They increase my dosage when I try to talk.

>You’re different, though. Your message history is different. You have friends.

You slump down to the ground and feel hot, thick tears cluster up behind your eyes. You have to reply. You have to say something.

Posting my questions now since I don't think I'll be around when the thread ends.

How did JJ survive the Ultimatum wave? (I think I may have asked this before, not sure)

It would be funny if, in 1610, JJ was a university student and friends with Eddie Brock Jr. Like Human!JJ, not like our JJ but in 1610 universe.

Is JJ more flammable now that he's part plant?

I take back what I said about wanting Asian Wasp. Please use EMH Wasp instead.

If JJ got the Horns extrapolative, would they look like a smaller version of Loki's horns?

What strength level was Joyce at the last time we saw her?

Despite its probably short length, how awesome would a fight with Riastrad JJ and the Hulk be?

Does JJ have any aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. on his mother's side?

Is the Russian (comic version) on the Random Encounter Table?

How much have JJ's experiences aged him emotionally? Like how old does he act?

When did the FF first appear in HMQverse?

If JJ started using a bow & arrow now, how good would he be? And how good could he be after training at it?

What level of Agility is Ricochet at?
>>
>>32616411
>implying Crusty would have the worst event ever in this
>>
If nothing else, I think this thread will give JJ the resolve to take Creeper down, no matter what. This HAS to stop, not just in a moralfag kind of way, but as a matter of self-preservation.
>>
>>32616156
>>[ ] “What is this place?”
Seems most important
>>
>>32616407
Those burns where caused by hell fire. In the marvel universe, mutant powers are less effect against hell fire than normal fire.

Crusty said in one of his after thread Q&A's that JJ would have healed faster if it had been normal fire.

Yeah, it's fairly potent. Not quite regrowing lost limbs from scratch, but I'd say it would heal enough to maybe get some of the moderately bad cases to medical attention. And given that they've been like this a while, maybe have a longer treatment for some?

>[X] “What is this place?”

You think a lot about what you want to say. You sort of want to say that everything’s going to be fine now. It’s not, of course, but you sort of want to say that. It’d mean following up and – and, you don’t know, bashing the remains of his skull in, or something, though, so you don’t. You’re not sure you’re ready for that.

What is this place, you type.

Again, the reply is almost instantaneous.

>Don’t know.

>Machines keep us alive. Regulate catalyst input. Accommodate for blood loss.

>I only know what’s written in the machines. Heart rate. Blood thickness. Catalytic level. They incubate something.

Incubate. Incubate. Seems like the wrong word to use for this, but you remind yourself that diseases can ‘incubate’.

>Coma induced intravenously. Wire applied to neck.

You check. Yeah, it’s there, sticking awkwardly from the gnarled remnants of the body’s neck.

>Unhook me.

Your heart sinks.

You’re way too glad when you see a text from Laura appear. That’ll give you a second to think. You open the message, expecting to find some kind of confirmation, but all it say is GET OUT NOW.

You blink, a nauseous, panicky sort of fear rising in your gut. What?

Another message flies in. Sender unknown.

>Unhook me first. I want to get out of here. Haven’t walked in so long.

>[X] Call Julian.
>[X] Unhook.

Before you even know what you’re doing, you’ve torn the drip from his neck. The wound bubbles and releases a thick, foul-smelling gel, like something you’d find on the underside of a boil. Man, what are you even doing? He’s not going to walk again. He’s not going to move again. If he wakes up – if he’s even capable of waking up, at this point – he’s not going to be doing much but writhing in blind pain for the rest of his life.

Thankfully, he doesn’t stir. The drug obviously requires some time to wear off.

Right. Right, that gives you time, time to think, time to –

You call Julian. Technically, you call Brian, but it’s Julian you want to shout at.

“Hey man you really wanna get out right”–

Brain’s voice is cut short as someone snatches the phone from him. You can hear people whispering, someone doing some light threatening, before Laura’s voice fills the receiver. Is it just you, or is her voice a note higher than usual?

“Johnathan, you must leave”–

“No, Laura, there’s these”–

“It doesn’t matter. Whatever you’ve found, you have to”–

“…There’s these people, these, uh, these mutants, all hooked up to”–

“Johnathan!” She raises her voice in an uncharacteristic burst of anger. “There are at least forty armed men converging on the building. You need to leave.”

You feel yourself freeze up. The urge to panic returns. How the hell? You didn’t see any cameras. Not one. Was there an alarm? Was it on the door? Or somewhere on the grounds? God, dammit… this… this isn’t fucking fair at all. It’s not fair, it’s not how any of this should be happening, and, and…

…and you think you can hear lots of big, heavy boots echoing their way down the stairs.

The problem with a quest that has this many people is that Write-in will never win. The vote is always decided in the first five or ten minutes.

Look at the thread there are at least 20 responses. Most people aren't going to actually read all of them to see if there are any good write-in before they vote. They just vote the second they're done with reading.

how will said system detect us? it needs a wavelength of some form to use to analyze us.
If invisibility makes us undetectable on most wavelengths, then the one it uses to detect us is also likely blocked from working while invisible. You cant just go "this detects things within this range, just because". Our invisibility is like a natural jamming device.

We have more strength than necessary, plus claws, taserhands, dragonbreath, and bullseye skills. Our best one is tasers and geointuitive vision + strength to chuck things (which is our only reliable ranged ability. I'd say our Defensive ability is lacking, but I'd also prefer to avoid fighting as much as possible.

>>32618060
There's a lot of different types of radiation. Plus rads are only dangerous once they're at a certain point. We're NOT at level 5, so that's a moot point, but we are at Level 4 which is still good. Just not sure how good it'll do for a mutant detection system that surely has to have a means of tracking down invisible mutants (because they're seriously going to have come across a few). Best guess is they can't find us while it's active, but the next few nights are going to be like that one Avatar episode where the gang's being chased by Azula nonstop until everyone suffers from sleep deprivation.

You’re only frozen for a moment. The next, you’re everywhere. You let your claws slip straight through your fingertips and make mangled debris about of the nearby machinery. You cut wires, slice tubing, and smashing plastic casing, rendering half the machines inoperable. And you the whole time, you know what you’re thinking?

You’re thinking that these people – the ones coming down the stairs – aren’t anyone you know. They don’t feel like gangsters. You know gangsters, and this just isn’t them. They’re silent. They’re as close to dead fucking silent as a human being can feasibly be. They’re wearing heavy boots, but their footwork is practiced and quiet, and fast – if you weren’t you, you’d probably never even hear them coming. They’d just be right behind you and you’d be completely fucked.

Your mind races as you sprint for the exit. Mercenaries? Creeper’s hired mercs before. Once he had this South African guys working for him, these bloody-minded killers with dead eyes and steady arms – people that made hardened gangsters shift uncomfortably and want to be elsewhere.

Something’s hissing. Corridor’s filling up with gas. You plunge on through, eyes watering, throat burning. It’s just tear gas, you think. You can deal with this. You can get out of this.

As you wade through the murk, you see them, their shapes, moving like shadows. They’re clad from head to toe in black tactical gear, looking vaguely like characters from some armchair general’s highly-armed, impeccably armoured wet dream. Their breath hisses through some kind of compact rebreathers and their eyes are hidden by dark red visors. These aren’t gangsters. They’re not even gangster-like. They’re professionals. And they have big scary rifles.

You feel your chest tighten.

>>
>(2/2)

Darting to and fro, you weave between their tight formations, managing, miraculously, to not stumble into a single one. You emerge into the fake-office inside the fake-building to find that it, too, is pumped full of gas. There’s four of them in the room with you, at the exit, keeping it secure or whatever. They’re unnervingly quiet for men with such big guns.

The silence breaks when one of them speaks into a comm-link, or a headset or whatever it is, his voice distorted beyond all possibility of recognition.

“Nothing on infrared.” Your gut squirms. They know. They know it’s you. “Abort?”

“No.” Comes the reply. It’s this silky, sharp female voice. Sounds foreign – like English is a second or maybe third language. “He’s here. I can smell his fear.”

Something clicks rhythmically in the smoke, like a scorpion flexing its chitin. You realize just a moment later that it’s a pair of high heels.

>>
>>32618573
Do we have that yet? No? Then who cares? The idea was idiotic.

Plus it would break stealth regardless even if you did have that.

There are no merits to the plan at all.
>>
>>32617930
>>32618161

Why the fuck do people keep forgetting the Taskmaster powers?
>>
>>32618590
>>32618608
>>32618613

>we'd be blurry instead. and then they'd just open fire and JJ would die in a hail of bullets.

Nah. They wouldn't get a good read on him.

Well, these fucking ex-SPETNAZ guys might, but not most everybody else.
>>
just to note: shadow field would stack with our agility and help with the bullet dodging matrix shit.
>>
>>32618615
because only you're the only one that cares about it.

go start taskmaster quest if you're so interested
>>
>>32618625
Again.

It would break stealth regardless even if you did have that.

Why are you arguing this?
>>
So was that kid cypher?
>>
>>32618615
because its good, unlike claws or subdermal
>>
>>32618625
they have lots of gun that shoot lots of bullets

not all the bullets would hit but enough would
>>
Also Katamari power
TACTILE TELEKINESIS
Requires: Level 4 Adhesive Touch, Level 4 Enhanced Senses
Cost: 3
As long as he remains in contact with one object, JJ may cause such objects to adhere to one another in large volumes. He could, for example, assuming he has the strength, wield a ‘chain’ of chairs, tables, and other miscellaneous items, or wrap his forearms in cartoonishly large clumps of adhered rocks.
>>
>>32613267
>still only two pastebins in the OP copypasta

Crusty why. Why haven't you changed your copypasta?
>>
> gets horns and tail
THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM!
>>
>>32618625
>Implying guns in a small office won't hit a blurry target described as "as seen through mist".
It's shit because it lets them know what general direction to even look in. That is not stealth.
>>
>>32618646
>It would break stealth regardless even if you did have that.

>Normally, JJ’s invisibility fails completely in moments of extreme exertion, physical trauma, or when he activates certain other abilities. This upgrade allows him to function in such situations with a muted form of invisibility – rather than being truly imperceptible, his features are blurred and his exact position becomes unclear, as if he’s being seen through mist.

>>32618660

See above.

>>32618648
>So was that kid cypher?

No. Why would you think that?

We've already met Cypher back with the Young X-Men.

Question; Could we use adhesive touch on only our hands and move across the ceiling like a kid on the monkey bars?
>>
>>32618698
Yeah, but that'd be ill-advised in our current situation.
>>
>>32618636

>because only you're the only one that cares about it.

At least half a dozen people, if not more, have expressed interest in it over the course of the past few threads, and the prerequisite (Getting Agility to 4/5) is something nearly everyone here would probably agree is a good idea.
>>
>>32618698
probably? i cant imagine a single reason we would ever do that though
>>
>>32618686
That is called breaking stealth, yes.

IE they know you're goddamn there.

having a non "exact" position means nothing when they can riddle the general possibilities of your location with bullets.

Even one bullet wouldn't be hard to aim at a figure in mist.

Why are you so stubborn about this? Do you even think shoving was a good idea?
>>
>>32618740
>Do you even think shoving was a good idea?

I voted for Jumping.

And JJ can dodge bullets. He'll be fine.
>>
>>32618723
I wanted to bank for agility last thread but everyone jumped on the strength bandwagon.
>>
To be honest, I'm actually more confident in our ability to take these guys down.

For one thing, they have the worst kind of weapon for their current environment, their gear is advanced enough that they're gonna rely on it instead of their other senses, and their uniforms are dehumanizing enough to make JJ hold back less.
>>
>>32618740
I interpreted that post as an agreement with the downside of shadowfield which is a shit.
>>
>>32618764
we have max agility
>>
>>32618788

No we don't.

Agility's max is 5.
>>
>>32618648
No. Broadband maybe?
>>
>>32618781
No, they wouldn't tell someone who thinks that Shadowfield a shit "See above" if they were agreeing with them.

They are just that dumb.
>>
>>32618778
I think that the fact that they work for the monster running this place is more than enough to make JJ not hold back on them.
>>
>>32618788
no, we have max strength,
agility can go up to 5.
>>
>>32618686
>dodging 40 armed and traind guys
waifu a better power

>>32618723
and yet you had to ask why no one is talking about it.

power discussion is just stupid at this point. everyone, regardless of what power they want, is going to pick bank. cuz we have none
>>
>>32618788
Nope, only strength is limited to 3.
>>
>>32618778
They have a mutant boss.

There is no way she's easy to take on.

Also note that the others, a group of a great deal more firepower, chose not to engage them.
>>
>>32618798
no, its 3 because its not one of our main powers
>>
>>32618788

>>32618798
>>32618808

It's a secondary power, therefore it's maxed. At least that's how I remember the secondary power rules.

>They have a mutant boss.

She's Balalaika. Not a mutant.

>>32618839

No, it can go up to 5.

Prove me wrong.
>>
>>32618778
A lady with a shotgun kicked our shit just a few threads ago. I don;t know.
>>
>>32618839
Only third-tier powers are limited to three.
>>
>>32618812

>and yet you had to ask why no one is talking about it.

Because believe it or not, the same people probably don't manage to be around for every single thread.

Obviously banking this session is a given, but talking about the future never hurt anyone. Autonomic Sequencing and Enhanced Muscle Memory are both incredible powers, and not just because of their combat applications. Imagine learning Laura's stealth techniques in a matter of weeks instead of months or years?

No stopping here.

You break into a run, legs churning with desperate fire, soles pumping against the ground. You ignore the tears in your eyes and the burning tightness in your lungs and you just jump – you jump as far as you can. You hurtle straight over their shoulders, clearing the doorway and much of the corridor beyond, eventually skidding to a halt at least six or seven meters from where you started.

Strength means jump good. Jump good is nice. Thank God for retard mutie strength.

Stopping only momentarily, you make for the doorway leading out into the main atrium, but that click-clacking sounds again, closer now, and you feel your spine dancing on the spot, a white-hot warning exploding to the forefront of your thoughts.

You duck, and something – lots of somethings – scythe through the air above you. They would’ve passed straight through your throat had you not been tipped off by that weird pre-sense of yours.

Where’d that come from? You’re not attaching a heartbeat to it. You think you heard a set of footsteps pass by you, but they were so light, like whatever they belonged to was only vaguely tethered to reality. Was there a shape moving through the smoke? Maybe. If it was there, it was fast.

Click-clack.

And you hear something, something a lot like that familiar, metallic SNIKT.
