Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

Erebus has returned.

Donovan, Auriel, Abigail, and the others barely escaped from the oncoming Vigil cruiser by slipping through the Skysever. The winds themselves seem hell-bent on holding back Erebus - but it's only a matter of time before he breaks through into Venia. At the same time, the core of the world has reached its breaking point. Without Shadow's help, Venia will be anihillated in the unleashed energies of Chaos.

Donovan worked with his allies to travel inside Geb and destroy the parasite of Light keeping him maddened. Two other goals remain: to restore Leviathan, and gain control of Xile, so that the Skysever might be used to attack Erebus more directly.

While the knight moves with the elementals toward the edge of the eastern wastes, Ila joins Tyrael, Yi Fang, and Arcturis and Gerald Flint in trying to gain control of the sky engine.

The elementals are safe, and Xile is secure. Now, you confront Erebus...

You are Sir Donovan Flint, and you are standing on the bridge of the Nemesis along with allies. Everyone who might be of any help against Erebus is there - holding people in reserve, at this stage, wouldn't make a difference. If you don't stop him here, everything dies, anyway.

On the way back from the Eastern Wastelands, you stopped in Arland, filling your crew to the brim. Ila, Adavan, Auriel, and Abigail, of course. And then there is Yi Fang, and his councilors, Tae Wong and Yong Xu; Queen Kalladar and Valeria Kavanere; Duke Vellik, Hemmelus; at his insistence, Graz Vak; and finally, in what might be the most powerful addition to your team, Raphael. During your brief stop at Archon, he offered his personal assistance, and it would have been foolish to turn down the man who is now the most powerful Light mage in the world.

Well, technically, that's you. But you can't really do much except blast it out all at once. No time to learn new spells at the moment.

A few people are on the ground. Obis, Freja and her father; the werewolves; Harvan, Janus Miller, and Charmeine; and the royal family of Atlantis. If all else fails, the leadership of the civilizations won't be completely decimated.

Steward is also onboard, though his massive battle construct is now positioned on Xile itself, guarding the core of the skysever. Its mobility was damaged in the previous battle, but it will make a good stationary threat. Fang suggested that, with his speed, Erebus might try to bypass you if he didn't confront you directly and attack the island, which is currently floating in the wilderness between Arland and Archon. Melody is also stationed there with the Staff of Winds. Assuming he attacks Xile, with the Nemesis's jump drive charged up again, they should be able to hold him off long enough for the rest of you to get back there - and Melody would probably have the best survivability of anyone, aside from Abigail.

Does Flint have a themesong?
>>
A part of you suspects that Fang just wanted to move Melody back away from the front lines, but his logic was sound, so no one argued. You need to learn how to do that. It would help with Auriel, sometimes.

Meanwhile, you also picked up one of Fang's mini-airships. It's not armored as much as an normal ship, but it's very manuverable and easy to pilot. It should help you can Abigail get close to Erebus.

Tal'ok has been leading Steward about the weapons room. With only a short timefram to work with, his 'help' has consisted of 'calibrating' the Nemesis's weapons to better attack Erebus - whatever that means. You suppose it's better than nothing. More comforting is the small army of combat constructs you picked up in Haven. 1-on-1, they aren't a match for Erebus, but they might come in handy.

Fang modified the skysever sigil with just a touch of Spirit, enabling him to control it remotely. Right now, you're hovering 50 miles south of Kan-Abar, where the western ocean meets the desert shore. Once Erebus knocks on Venia again, he'll make the skysever retreat, and then force it to wrap around Erebus's giant airship in its entirety.

And then, the fight will begin. No one knows what Erebus will unleash.

Far below, standing on the shore, are the three elementals - the soft glow of Hecate; the unassuming rock of Geb (though he appears somewhat sandier than usual); and a nub of flowing water that you know must be Leviathan.

Not much of a choice really. Only Abigail could sub out for Melody at Xille, and we need her at the front.

Also, Fang is sending Abby (his niece and heir) straight at Erebus, so I don't think he's playing favorites too much.

I'd gladly trade her for two or even three of the other less heavy hitters, maybe Vellik and one or two of Fang's councilers

In the distance, the sky darkens. Shadow strikes the world. You don't have to feel it - you can see it. Purple ripples of energy radiate out from the epicenter of Erebus's strike, running along the edge of the world, as if you're all a pool of water, and he's throwing rocks. The air trembles.

"Get ready," Fang says. He lifts his radio. "Melody, stand by. I'm letting him in."

"Alright."

Fang gestures. A small sigil appears in front of him. He touches the outside of the light. It flashes once.

The angry, boiling clouds on the horizon retreat, like a wall of fog being blown away by a wind. Lightning flashes. The energy of Shadow explodes in a crackling burst of purple light. You can see the sea swell under the force.

The massive ship moves forward at a steady rate. You remember it being an oblong sort of mountain - but it has no more rock. Instead, it is black steel. It reminds you of the Nemesis - only fifty times the size. There are no walkways, though, no atriums, no windows. It is a twisted hulk of brutal functionality. You can only guess at the purpose of it.

Without the skysever in the way, you can feel Erebus. It's like feeling a dark shadow moving over the world, a passing cloud blocking the sun, only the cloud doesn't leave. It just gets darker.

And then the sun goes black. The land is cast in a strange twilight. An eclipse. Only this time, you're on the recieving end.

"Looks like he's going to fight," Fang says. "Let's see how he likes this." He draws his finger along his orange sigil in three spaces. The magic turns, folds in space, and transforms into another shape. You're impressed - you've never seen a spell like that. Fang jabs his index finger into the center of the light.

Abigails Artifact is the key
>>
Almost instantly, a tornado condenses around the giant craft. It's like watching Xile's old barrier of wind spring back to life, only every part of its power is concentrated in one place. The craft is engulfed in angry green winds. It stops moving forward, coming to a stop above choppy, wind-driven seas about a half-mile away from the shoreline.

You feel something. Erebus is moving. He's moving upward.

"Fang, is the craft still inside the winds?"

"It is."

"Erebus isn't there," Abigail says.

"Abby, you feel him too?"

She nods, and points up. "He's left the ship and is flying up into the sky. Really fast..."

Fang's eyes widen. "Elements, he's going to bombard us. It's like that attack from before."

"The Nemesis is tough, but nothing survived that," Auriel says. "But Steward made the missiles. How did he - "

"I suspect that Erebus himself has alternative means of manufacture."

"Wait a minute," Auriel says. "We don't even know that's what he has planned."

"...call it instinct," Fang says. He glances at Abigail. "You told me he called you the nickname Shadow held for you - something only Shadow would have known. Somehow, he has Shadow's memories. But because of that, he's given something away - he's vindictive. He'll take pleasure in the irony. The attack he used to save us, becoming the attack he uses to destroy us. I'm certain of it."

Fang makes a strong point. In any case, you don't have much time...

>try to intercept Erebus before he can do whatever he has planned, firing on him from the Nemesis
>get in touch with Hecate. It's a one-shot sort of thing. You just need to hunker down until it's over.
>ask the elementals to try and intercept Erebus

Theory:
Missiles are harder to target at scattered airborner units. Shockwave from ground hits will be less fatal if everyone's above it.
>>
>>32622013
Could we have Geb conjure up a giant ass rock wall and throw it at the missiles to detonate them prematurely?
>>
>>32621956
The Earth and Water elementals are unlikely to possess flight or the speed necessary. I think tanking this is our only option outside of some sort of magic wonkery.
>>
>>32621956

>>
>>32622069
Does Geb have Gravity magic?

I mean for us it was located in the Earth tree, so it kind of makes sense that he'd be able to do it.

Gravity is the only reason that bombardment strategy is so effective, take that away and it's worthless.
>>
>>32622155
Fuck that might just work. SM, can Geb fuck gravity up?
>>
>>32622155
>Gravity is the only reason that bombardment strategy is so effective,
No, he'd still have accelerated them well beyond terminal velocity himself. Just like Shadow did.
>>
>>32621956
How about we go full stealth then have Hecate conjure a bunch of false signals? Decrease the number of explosives that will hit us? Then we have everyone focus on shields and deflecting them away from us.
>>
>>32622155
I think that the vast majority of the speed comes from hypersonicing at the ground.
>>
Waitwaitwait
The Nemesis's armor plating is powered by it's Earth Dynamo, right?
CAN WE GET GEB TO TEMPORARILY SUPERCHARGE THE EARTH DYNAMO TO TANK THE SHOT
>>
>>32621956
Can we have the elemental lords leave diversionary constructs or replicas in place while Hecate teleports them away, leaving an anchor point on the beach? It took Shadow a while to get the right altitude and speed, so we have time. We should also activate our ships cloaking feature and cheese it.
>>
>>32621956
Ok, here's what we know...
1. Erebus will charge straight down to build up speed.
2. Upon reaching an optimal velocity, he'll unload all missiles at a given point.

Therefore, anything fire directly upward at Erebus will hit him and have a high chance of detonating him missiles prematurely.

We know Hecate can teleport directly to Adavan. If the other elementals can as well, the best option is to have them focus fire on Erebus, blink onto the Nemesis, and have the Nemesis gain altitude to avoid the shockwave of the missiles.
>>
>>32622192
The ship would just blow up, think about what happened when Shadow tried to supercharge a dynamo
>>
>>32621956
Can we just go hide underneath Vigil?
>>
>>32622246
>If the other elementals can as well,
Doubtful. Plus Levi don't have a follower right there as a teleport anchor.

Geb isn't the type to teleport anyway. He's not a Panopticon like Hecate, he's brute force.

"He's got to come straight down for that," you say. "That's our opening."

"What do you mean?" Auriel asks.

"I've flown with Shadow when he's moving fast enough to do what he wants to do now," you say. "He can't turn quickly at all. Tell Hecate to have Geb and Leviathan fire at him as he comes down. We just have to gain altitude to avoid the blast."

"And what about them, when it hits?"

"Hecate can teleport them up to us. Adavan is right here."

Adavan nods to himself. "That should work. She can always return to me. It's no trouble for her to bring something along."

"I'll relay the plan." Fang furrows his brow for a moment as he communicates with Hecate.

Almost immediately, you see the sand of the shore start to shift and grow. The water begins to froth and bubble. A crystal of ice rises up out of it like a stalagmite.

"Auriel, you'd better get going!"

"Don't have to tell me twice." Auriel swivels back to face the main control console. She guns the throttle of the airship, and the Nemesis lurches upward at high speed. Everyone braces themselves as you soar up past the cloudline.

In the distance, high above, you feel a twinkle of Shadow. Erebus is turning about.

And then he dives, puncturing a hole in the clouds. They block your view of the ground below, but you hang on to the nearby railing anyway.

There's a flash of orange light, and suddenly, three elementals are standing right behind you. You turn to greet them.

For a moment, you can't see.

Your vision clears slowly. It's splotchy, as if you were staring at the sun - but they are spots of darkness, not light, from a sun of darkness.

The clouds below have evaporated. An explosion of power like nothing you have ever felt is -still- erupting from the surface of Venia. The ocean itself has been obliterated in a miles-wide circle. Steam rises from a cracked, molten crater.

The darkness sweeps up in the shape of a rising plant stalk, a terrible blossom of energy.

And then the shockwave hits you.

The entire ship shakes like a raindrop in a thunderstorm. Everyone holds on to display screens, chairs, rails, and each other, anything they can get their hands on. It feels like it will never end.

But it does. You climb back to your feet, pulling Adavan off the floor where he was sprawled with one arm around your ankles. "Are you alright?"

"Never better. Elements save us." He stares out the window at the explosion. "If he has more than one of those, we're finished. That could breach the core!"

Fang brushes his robes. "That was unexpected." He looks at the elementals. "Did you manage to hit him?"

Geb makes a small shrug. "Made ice-rock. He smashed into it harder than we smashed into him. Must have hurt some."

"Probably," Leviathan says. "We didn't stay to find out. That one might have stung a bit."

You feel another tingle of Shadow. Hecate is the first to move. "He's firing a spell at us!"

The Nemesis lurches to the side as Auriel loops her hands back around the controls - but she's still recovering from the aftershock of the explosion. The energy crashes into the side of the ship.

You don't notice the damage readout of the ship change, but the momentum forces you into a spin. Everyone lunges for grip again as you're sent into a tailspin. Auriel wrestles with the console, struggling to get the Nemesis under control.

As the plate-glass of the ship turns to face the crater, you see it - feel it, rather. Erebus.

"Auriel, he's coming!" you shout.

Auriel slaps a button. The armored shutters slam closed over the main windows around the ship. Almost immediately, a huge dent is blown in them. The dent creases inward with repeated metallic banging.

The sounds keep echoing around the room. Erebus slams himself against the ship's armor. Everyone stares at the shutters, eyes wide. Fang gets a spell ready. Leviathan is holding a spear of ice.

The shell of the airship holds. More banging. Other dents appear in the armor.

"He's looking for a weak point," Hecate says.

"If he gets inside, we're sitting ducks," Fang says. "We need to keep him busy!"

It's only a matter of time before Erebus finds a crack in the Nemesis's defenses. What do you do?

>Hecate engages him in mental warfare, tries to verify that Shadow is sane
>Abigail and Flint go to the hanger
>Auriel tries to divert power from the wind dynamo from engines to shield

>Adavan comes with Flint and Abigail to relay for Hecate, help shield, and because he's probably the third or fourth closest person to Shadow

Open the shutters and hit him with all the light magic we can.
>>
>>32623834
How strong is Raphael? Does he think he can even stand up to Erebus? If so, send him out with the Elemental Lords as per >>32623908 . If not, have him jack-off in the corner or something.

Pretty nice.

Maybe consult Auriel for a sigil that can temporarily disorient Erebus (like a magical flash bang) and have Flint pump some light mana into it.

It took me a second to realize this was one whole plan, rather than SM forgetting his trip and posting options.

So yeah, do this.

I'd rather conserve flints mana for when he, Abigail, and Adavan try to fly a skiff at the God of Ennui.

It'll be like trying to CONSUME Erebus all over again.

Ok.

Let's see.

I'm going to end the thread here, guys. I'm trying to do work and write at the same time but it's not working. But I'm glad we got this started.

I really like this plan! I've divided it into four main parts and set some DCs.

Roll me 12 dice, 1d100. I will post the combat results of this scuffle next time, since I'll have to write quite a few posts!

I suspect the next thread will be either Sunday night or Monday night.
