You are the PRODUCER, a former soldier hired to manage a group of teenage girls on their rise to stardom, assuming they don't get killed in the process!

You're... you're not quite sure what to think at the moment. Technically. Lila worked for a rival idol company and on all accounts would have been an enemy. But... nobody deserved a fate like that, getting cut to pieces by some psycho. Certainly not her.

You've already sent Stig to drop of K-Zwolf at the crime scene to sniff it out. The place was still crawling with cops, and you'd rather not make a scene. Meanwhile, Himawari was busy breaking into the police network to intercept anything their investigation could dig up.

You really haven't told any of the other girls what had happened. You're not certain you wanted to, but you definitely know Julie knows, and she might tell them herself. She seemed to take the news pretty hard, too.

You head for the computer center, where Himawari is busily tapping away at at her workstation. Her screens are a flurry of activity as she sifts through piles of digital data.

"So have you gotten into the police network yet?" You ask.

"I was in an hour ago." Himawari shrugs. "Their firewalls are garbage and their internal filing system is atrocious. No wonder they never seem to get anything done."

"Do you have anything to show me?"

"Well, I've managed to pull surveillance footage of the surrounding area shortly before and after the incident." Himawari says. "Not much, though. Whoever this guy was, he knew where the cameras were and made sure not to look at any of them directly."

"Anything else?"

"Autopsy reports. But let me warn you, it's not pretty. They have pictures included."

"I've seen some shit. I can deal with it." You nod. "Is that it?"

"So far. I have to really dig through a lot of crap here." Himawari frowns. "Just warning you though, the deeper I dig, the more chances they have of detecting my intrusion."

"No... no... no... YES!" Himawari says excitedly as the tapping of her keys picks up in tempo. "Now we're getting somewhere!"

"What did you find?" You ask.

"Private details they never released to the public." Himawari says, and a list appears on the closest screen and you give it a quick read.

>Coroners have managed to analyze the type of cuts made to the victims and traced it back to a rare, military grade monomolecular blade.
>There are only two vendors known to sell this item: Toha Heavy Industries and Marc's Military Surplus.
>Suspect has intimate knowledge of both standard and advanced investigation techniques. All crime scenes have shown almost zero foreign material that can be traced back to the suspect.
>Due to knowledge of city infrastructure it is a high likelihood that suspect is native to Delta City, or was at least a resident for an extended period of time.
>Unfortunately, no distinct pattern to victims has been found, aside from the fact that they all work in the idol industry. None of the victims have direct relation to one another.
>There is no evidence to support theories that the killings are covers for covert idol assassinations.

Huh, that seemed to be helpful. You already recognized a potential lead in Marc. Maybe he might know something, since he did tend to sell a lot of hardware without asking questions.

"Thanks a lot, Himawari. Let me know if you find anything else." You nod.

With the potential of the Danger Room, do you think we should put our Idols under training to resist torture/interrogation, both physical and psychological as well as help them confront their fears? We cannot trust that other companies will provide the same level of treatment of as we have treated theirs.

I imagine "2 Days in Hell" would suffice. One 24 hour period would be for the generalized aspects of interrogation, and the final 24 hour period would be tailored for the idol undergoing the exercise. The Tombs trio should be fine for the general aspect of the first day due to where they were raised, so we could spend more time on the psych., or personalized aspect.

The major problem is whether we should tell them beforehand so they are mentally prepared for the exercise, or don't tell them (via bag over the head).

Hell, one exercise I imagine fucking their mind is to show a hardlight thug abuse hardlight idols (resembling our girls), and then execute them, in front of the girl undergoing the exercise, in cold blood (maybe with splatter effects) when "P-San" can't come up with the ransom.

You decide to check in on your idols and K-Zwolf. As you make your way to the dorms, you link up with Stig and your Cyber Hound.

"Stig, are you there?"

"..."

"Come on, Stig, can you at least talk over the comms?"

"What Stig means to say is that we're a block away from the crime scene and K-Zwolf has already been deployed." NEMO says helpfully.

"Ah, thanks." You grin. "How's Stig been treating you? I know he's always been a firm believer in manual control."

"Oh, I'm just sitting back and analyzing his driving habits." NEMO chuckles. "I haven't had an opportunity or reason to take control of the vehicle yet."

"WARNING. HOSTILES DETECTED." K-Zwolf growls. You immediately switch to his optical feed and you see what he's talking about. You see what are no doubt DeRosa's girls skulking about the crime scene, no doubt also trying to glean clues.

Also, I just came up with a random idea. What if we modify the police data to point to DeRosa and "leak" it to the open web. This will get DeRosa into a lot of trouble and swarmed with enemies, and misdirect everyone away from the real murder for us to capture.

>roll 1d20

>>32644734
I know it's distasteful, but we have to see this opportunity and advance our long term goals.

Another idea, now that we know the murder's MO, we can perfectly replicate it and sneak in a couple DeRosa girls murders and everyone will assume that it's the murderer.

2 POINTS REMAINING

K-Zwolf manages to creep through between the snooping idols, but there are a few close calls, like one young idol who seems to have sharper than normal senses. Every so often she'd glance at K-Zwolf's direction, causing the Cyber Hound to freeze in response.

"Hey, wait a second." You narrow your eyes. "K-Zwolf, raise your head."

K-Zwolf follows your instructions, and you can see something interesting from its optical feed.

A camera. You quickly cross reference with the city municipal cameras and see that it's not listed, meaning it had to have been installed by some third party. Looking at where it was pointed, it was looking straight at the alley where Lilia's body was found.

This could be a potential jackpot right here.

"K-Zwolf, can you retrieve that camera?"

"UNNECESSARY. SENSORS INDICATE THAT IT RECORDS DATA WIRELESSLY."

"Can you trace it?"

"DATALINKED TRACED. NETWORK SECURITY DETECTED."

You nod and forward the intel to Himawari to look at.

"You did enough, K-Zwolf. Get out of there." You order.

"ACKNOWLEDGED. RETURNING." K-Zwolf immediately disengages and makes its way back to the SUV.

Satisfied, you cut the connection and enter the dorms, but don't find anybody in. You check the schedule again. Most of the idols were at practice, but you see Julie left a note saying she was in the Danger Room.

Curious.

You head down to the Danger Room. The red light above the door is lite, indicating that there was a simulation in progress. You ignore and hit the override. The door slides open and you see Julie inside, absolutely wailing on a poor practice dummy. If it had been a real person, you suspect it would have been mashed into a meaty pulp by now.

You know, it would have been the absolute worst thing if somebody were to suddenly walk in on this scene. You, a grown man, tickling a teenage girl that was not really related to you. Good thing there weren't any cameras in the Danger Room.

And then you hear the door slide open.

You turn to see both Rochelle and Morgan standing at the door, carrying a multitude of weapons. No doubt there were here for some shooting practice. Rochelle is standing there with a shocked look on her face, while Morgan just looks at you with a flat curiosity.

"Wanna join in?" You say as smoothly as possible.

"Is this a normal thing you do here?" Morgan turns to ask Rochelle.

"No, No it isn't." Rochelle sighs then grins, pushing her glasses up and cracking her knuckles. "But I am NOT passing this opportunity up!"

"Hey, Roch, what are doi- AHAHAHAA OHGODWHY." Julie wails as Rochelle's fingers join in on the assault on her body.

Morgan just shrugs and squats next to Rochelle, observing this entire, odd sight.

"Hm, Aunt Litvya has always told me about tickle torture techniques but I had no idea they were so effective. I must reevaluate my opinion of her."

"AHHAHAHAA, I'M GONNA KILL GWUAHAHAHA YOU ALL!" Julie says as she flails about on the ground.

"All right, we better stop before she suffocates." You say say, standing up.

"Heh. Never knew the big bad Julie had such a fun little weakness." Rochelle chuckles. "Maybe I should tell Melissa-"

"Do that and you'll be eating out a tube for the rest of your life." Julie grumbles as she gets back up to her feet, trying to regain some dignity.

"That was an excellent showing." Morgan nods, giving a thumbs up.

"I didn't ask for your opinion!"

Finally, with things settled down, Rochelle and Morgan go off to do their intended practice on a simulated range. You and Julie take a seat near the back on some artificial but very comfy hardlight chairs.

"Anyways, Julie, mind telling me what's on your mind?" You ask.

"...sure." She sighs and closes her eyes. "Ask away."

"So... what was life for you like down in the Tombs?" You ask. "I mean, I know you and Cole and Melissa are from there, but I've never recalled any of you really talking about what you've done down there. Did you have family? How did you live down there?"

"Oh, well..." Julie sighs. "Life in the Tombs is tough, especially for children. It's all about survival down there. For a lot of people, kids are just liabilities, or something to exploit. My parents... my real ones, were in the former camp."

"They neglected you?"

"You can say that." Julie nods. "More like, they just let me do my own thing. As long as I brought back food and money, they had no problems with me sticking around."

"And that SWAT armor?"

"From a cop."

"I thought there were no cops in the Tombs." You frown.

"Well, if you would believe it, once up on a time, Delta City did try to to enforce law and order in the Tombs, though I think you can guess how that turned out." Julie sighs. "But anyways, there was still at least one cop down there, fighting the good fight, protecting the innocent, and all that, and he seriously had his work cut out for him. But... he was the nicest guy I knew, besides you, of course."

"Uh huh." You nod. But you know, a cop wouldn't get sent down to a place like the Tombs without some serious baggage."

"Maybe." Julie nods. "But to a lot of us in the Tombs, he was a goddamn saint. He kept the thugs and pimps away from me, and he taught me everything I knew."

"And what happened to him?" You ask.

"What happens to everybody who stays in the Tombs." Julie smiles sadly. "You can fight all you want, but eventually the Tombs will get you one way or another."

"I see..."

"It wasn't anything epic. He was just trying to stop some dirtbag from beating up his girlfriend. Asshole was carrying a gun, and he just wasn't fast enough. Kinda funny, really. I could've considered him a surrogate father of sorts, but I never even learned his name." Julie laughs bitterly. "From that moment on I swore I'd be like him. I'd fight evildoers and give them a good taste of JUSTICE."

Ah, things were starting to become a bit clearer now. Julie's first role model was a cop, and she was doing her best to emulate him.

He was more than just a cop, he was a hero. But sometimes you have to be as careful as much as being a blunt force for justice.

"Right away, Producer." Jenner says. "I'm sure they'll appreciate it."

Well, that was one issue down. So many more to go.

I don't think Marc has a role though he might have an idea of who bought it.

He seems more a gun person than knife person.
>>

No real, offense. We are not directly accusing or blaming Marc or knowingly supplying and aiding a serial killer. Just looking for some information.

If he sold weapons to someone, who are using them to kill Idols, he might actually want to help us catch the person, even if he doesn't know/remember who he sold it to, he must have some sort of log of sales or cameras in the store. And then again, he might not have sold it to the person we are even looking for.

You decide to check in on Himawari and how much evidence she's been gathering so far, so you return to the data center.

"So, Himawari, how are things going?" You ask.

"Well, I managed to break into the server containing that camera footage." Himawari says. "We really lucked out here. It's not on city records, and the server hasn't had much activity for a while. Seems to me like the owners of the building set it up and completely forgot about it."

"So do we have footage of the killer?" You ask.

"Even better. We have a face." Himawari bring sup a video of a hooded man hurriedly leaving the alley. He gives a few looks around to make sure he's along, and one of those movements brings his face perfectly in line with the camera lens.

"Facial recognition?" You ask.

"Already run." Himawari says. "No hits on criminal databases, but I did get hits on, get this, MILITARY networks, but the info if blocked and my query nearly got red flagged. Whoever this guy is, he's a combat vet like you and he's got a serious past."

"So, what are our options here?" You ask.

"Well, if you want to keep pursuing this, I'd have to try to break into a military database, which is a couple orders magnitude above a local police station. Or, you could go try asking Marc about that knife, unless you happen to know anybody with enough security clearance to grab those files."

If the ATF still exists in this cyberpunk future--and they probably do--he probably has some Form 4473 copies filed away. That gives us basically everything on the purchasers of whatever firearms go through that shop--names, addresses, birth dates. We grab those like the Russkies did in Red Dawn, and we know who has purchased firearms in the general area for the past few months. I don't think we can ask for them, though, since it's all private information and comes under jurisdiction of a federal agency.

Baseless speculation time?

What if it's an ex-soldier whose military brat daughter wasn't accepted to be an Idol? It seems kinda far fetched for it to be some Idol-obsessed veteran that went full Mark Chapman.

>>I'll talk to Marc.

>>32649070
I doubt Marc gives a fuck about ATF backend. Him being 50% of the suspect pool isn't great for his public perception, even if he ended up being the one who sold it.

He'd want the whole thing wrapped up like a beef brisket at a jewish deli and buried like Jimmy Hoffa.
>>
>>32648999
Maybe Idol Mercenaries popping up everywhere taking all the "jobs" and being treated as pop stars, while a retired military man might dislike that shit.

Kinda like the whole 'Vietnam Veteran' thing that went on.

Kinda like, I served my country for 10 years out there, and come back home with people calling me a murderer, nothing really to show for it except pieces of metal on my uniform, and unable to get a decent job with my skills because everybody wants a "Cute Idol Mercenary".

To be honest being a Mercenary is an actually shitty career. You are a paid killer. People probably thing you are crazy, or are scared of you. Your employers don't really care if you live or die most of the time, and will likely try to cheat you of your pay or maybe a complete scumbag.

And then boom! Idol Mercenaries everywhere. If I was a veteran mercenary I would be kinda like "What the fuck is this shit."

This is a just inference and guessing really.

Yes, because you'd totally not want to pay Hotel Moscow types for their services--I mean, it's not like they're hardened combat vets that can improvise a bomb out of duct tape and pinball machine parts, and are absolutely not afraid of committing atrocities, making your life a living hell.

Not paying a mercenary group is like withholding meth from a tweaker junkie that hasn't had his fix in the last six hours: it doesn't end well, and there is a strong possibility of anal rape, both in the figurative and literal sense.

we consider bringing it to The Boss, because while he can help, he may also take that information and run with it, or play it as a card at a higher level.
>Marc and the knife - warn him that this may be some shit, see if he can get him to point us in the right direction. we may not want to put our supplier at risk because of asking dangerous questions, and the risk of souring relationships.

Then branch out to old, trustworthy war buddies. At the same time, see if we could recruit someone for the base - one favor for another. We could use a drill sargeant for the girls, we don't have someone to oversee their combat training besides ourselves

>Himawari: take that footage off the camera. If we found it, someone else can, and we want the bounty for this fucker. Also check to see if anyone else accessed it.

>>32649414
Are you really saying you don't trust a old SF friends? Really/
>>
So how much influence do you think we hold in the Tombs?
>>
>>32648972
Well, you could always try contacting some of your old war buddies to see if they could help you out. There is one person who immediately comes to mind. The problem, though, would be actually getting in reach with her. You're simply not sure whether the contact number she had left behind was still valid or not.

If anybody would know what you're looking for, it would be the Captain. The phone rings a couple times before somebody finally picks up.

"I had a feeling you'd call me up eventually." You hear a flat, but very serious voice speak. Yep, it was definitely the Captain you remembered.

"Captain." You say politely and respectfully. Heck, you almost salute on the spot until you remember that you're on a voice-only line. "I have a favor to ask."

"Oh? What could it be?"

"I need you to run a facial recognition on this person." You say, forwarding a picture of the suspect. "His info is locked behind a military firewall and I need to bypass it."

"Hm, this seems simple enough. If I do this, do you mind taking care of something for me?" The Captain asks.

"Like what?" You ask.

"You're the Producer of an idol company, right? I just need somewhere to lay low for a bit."

"The term 'lay low' has a lot of negative connotations to it." You say cautiously. "What kind of trouble are you in?"

"Not really trouble, just some inconvenience." You hear the Captain clarify. "I might have attracted the attention of certain very nasty mercs that I need to deal with. I just need somewhere I can set up safely. Do you think you can do it?"

>>

Cole and Nico might tease us.

Rochelle comes from a military family background, so she might be nervous or ecstatic.

Julie, Melissa, Rin and Morgan might be indifferent.
>>

Melissa will have some sort of respect due to her mods I think.

>>

>You got a deal.

Need help with them? If they are after you, that last thing they'll expect is a idol group ambushing them. We can use an extra favor.

Also, if you hang out here, might as well share your experience with the girls, and give them a good role model. We have a fully functional danger room to play around in.
>>
>>32649592
"You got a deal." You say. "But, you think you can be a bit more specific on who these mercs are?" You ask.

"We're investigating some Russian mercs who might have ties to espionage rings." The Captain says simply. "Simple as that."

"All right..." You say, not quite convinced, but you believe it's something you can talk to her in person about. Even if she did tend to be cryptic, you knew the Captain would never withhold genuinely crucial details without good reason. "Also, since you already know I'm running an idol company, you think you can train my idols with some of your um... skills while you're here?"

"Sure, if I've got the time. Let me run this data for a second.

The wait is almost agonizing.

>You have 1 point left!

"Okay, I got it." The Captain says. "Forwarding the data to you now."

You frown when you look at the profile you're given. The face matched a Lieutenant Eli Walters, formerly part of the US Army. Even worse, the guy used to be part of the Special Activities Division, one of the blackest of black ops around. Whatever he did, it was some pretty serious shit.

And to make things even worse, the profile suggested that he was also at least 60% augmented. Possibly even moreso since he was dishonorably discharged for unspecified reasons.

But.... you have a face, and you have a name. That's a pretty good starting point, for all intents and purposes. Now you just have to track the fucker down.
