Not long after the departure of the marooned Union forces news of your existence appears to have spread. The two small creatures sprint on their hind and fore limbs, while holding their long rifles above their backs with their middle limbs. They quickly move in on your wasps at the order of the human with them. One of your wasps is cocooned in a dense, porous film while the other has been wounded. A large metal rod has pierced your drone’s wings, shattering the airfoil and pinning it to a tree. Your other two wasps are airborne and still untouched, but the odds are starting to look grim. Your sniffer, true to its role as a scout, has been able to avoid detection, remaining perfectly still within the thick fungal sprouts along the underside of a nearby mushroom tree’s cap.

“Huey, Dewey! We still got two live ones, get rid of ‘em.” The human, a tall man with a pale face, his dark armor coated in a dense collection of local vegetation hanging from a thick weave of rope, yells at the two smaller creatures. He raises his wrist to his face and clicks a small button on his bracer. “Coil, send the hired help with the buggy, tell ‘em to floor it.”

The small creatures twist their long torsos as they manipulate their weapons, directing them upwards to your remaining wasps.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

Current Research 1/2
>Small land drone
>Large land drone

Available research options
>Lightning gun
Very slow: potential of failure and destruction of sample device
This powerful weapon appears to throw rapid bursts of highly conductive plasma in a manner not unlike natural lightning. The humans of the Union call it a “CIP Pistol” which seems to stand for “Concentrated Ionized Plasma”. From what you have seen of it in action, it appears to have devastating damage potential, but is difficult to aim and holds a very short effective range.

>Ion thrusters
Slow
The Unity drone is held aloft by a series of powerful ion thrusters that use the air particles around it, or stray particles found in the interstellar medium to accelerate and change vector in a highly efficient fashion. No real fuel is needed, only a powerful electrical charge. The only major drawback is that with the increase in efficiency comes a drop in overall performance and power. The Unity appears to have gotten around this limitation by carrying their drones in larger ships that transport them in and out of combat, and by limiting the drone’s size to a bare minimum.
>>
>>32662381
>and clicks a small button on his bracer
Our sniffer can sense the radio signals from this, if any, right?
>>
>>32662403
>> Mine: +75 M per day (+25 M per digger)
This is outdated, yes?
>>
Hey guys, remember the kamikaze idea from last thread, why don't we have a flying drone that grows and drops the explosive sacs, hell we can make them into our own version of grenades that can be grown and given to our warriors or other drones.
>>
>>32662432
Research 2/2
>Cyclotron particle beams
Very slow: Runs a potential of failure and destruction of the sample device.
Unlocks Liner particle beam research
The Unity drone is equipped with four powerful cyclotrons, a ring of superconductors that use powerful magnetic fields to rapidly accelerate a series of particles to near-light speeds, which are each attached to one of the four main weapons. The cyclotron is both compact and efficient, but is relatively fragile as damaging any one component will disable the entire system. It also requires a short but noticeable amount of time for the cyclotron to accelerate a new shot. The drone fires them in sequence to account for this and provide more firepower.

>Conductive armor plating
Medium
The Unity drone appears to have been designed with the energy based CIP pistol in mind. Layers of highly conductive struts frame the armor like a faraday cage, protecting the inner working components from electrical fields and directing harmful blasts of energy away from critical areas. It is much less effective against solid projectiles however, and is only as strong as the metal alloy plating covering its chassis.

Your sniffer attempts to home in on the radio the human is using and interpret the data, but the signal seems to come from every direction at once. The transmission is in some form of code, or another language, or both.

The human slowly approaches the tree, weapon raised, and after a short while raises his visor back up. He continues to look into the tree suspiciously. "I could have sworn-"
Your wasps dive down, arcing towards the human. You can hear the loud bang of the small creature's weapons, but with your wasps speed they send their shots wide and far of their marks. The human reacts quickly, spinning on his heels and loosing a bolt before he seems to even fully register the attack. The bolt impacts a tree, missing your drones by inches and as they pass one leaves a deep cash through the shoulder, between the thick metal plating. The other wasp dives straight in and plunges its blades into the humans abdomen. The human is taken off his feet and sent flying with your wasp to the edge of the clearing where the two slide to a halt in the dirt.
The human caught up blood, then spits a crimson spray into your wasp's face. His fists clench and an elongated loop of metal unsheathes from the right bracer, quickly glowing with heat. He raises his head and hisses between his teeth, "Fuck you, mate."

The two alien creatures quickly run towards the human, running right by your sniffer without pause.
Your wasps leap back to the air, the first one quickly making it past the canopy, the other briefly struggles to dislodge its blades, causing the human to shout from either pain, anger, or some mixture. "You little shit!" The red-hot loop of metal quickly slices through your wasp's blade, and before you can send it airborne it is caught by a left hook to the side of the head from the human's fist, sending it reeling to the side. "I'll kill ya, ya fuckin bastard!" Your wasp leaps into the air as the human pulls out a small sidearm, his torso still pinned to the ground. You can hear the sound of metal slugs ripping the nearby trees, but your drone quickly passes the canopy. It is only then that you realize your wasp's right mandible has been snapped clean off, and a large fracture has formed along the side of its head.

Your third wasp, still pinned by its wing, desperately scrambled for freedom. The sound of snapping chitin can be heard as the bolt tears free and the drone flops to the ground. You quickly look for cover, scrambling for the closest thicket. The two small creatures stand over the human, chirping and yelping rapidly. The human slaps one of them. "The hell are you doing gawking? You let another get away!"

After only a few minuets a large buggy moves in through the thicket to the clearing. Loose foliage is send flying away from the underside, which hums as the vehicle slowly floats to a halt and touches down lightly. Three other humans quickly emerge, tending to the other human.
"Lyle, shit what happened."
"Just get the bagged one and tell Coil to prep the cooker. I've had worse." Lyle says with a gurgling laugh and a thick flow of blood flowing from his waist. They quickly lift him into the back of the buggy as the two small creature, Huey and Dewy, lift your wasp in its thick sack into a small compartment along the side of the buggy.

Your sniffer quickly hops from tree to tree, silently trailing the buggy as best it can while leaving plenty of room between to avoid detection. Your wasp has been placed in a container of some sort, and while you can detect a vague sense of location, you are unable to see anything past the container's interior. Eventually the buggy disappears into thin air, catching you off guard. Your wasp seems to still be in the buggy, but you sense it has stopped and can hear the sounds of activity. Your sniffer detects nothing, but at the very least you have a decent idea of where the buggy disappeared.

Your sniffer hangs back, avoiding the area until you can send help.
Eight warriors, two with fire sprays should be sufficient, you suspect. Your two remaining airworthy wasps move to assist, and your injured wasp is still making its way back to your hive, although the jungle can be dangerous along and on the ground.

You can feel the captured wasp being moved. The sound of hydraulics and the clacking of crates and equipment, then a loud hissing and metal scraping. A synthetic voice can be heard from above, a female voice with a strange accent.
"Welcome back, Lyle."
"Not in the mood, Angle, prep medical." Lyle's voice is strained, as if talking with a clenched jaw.
"Of course, Lyle."
"Huey, dewy, take care of the sample. Isaac, Lenny, go check the perimeter and set up Bob."
"Sure thing." Two humans respond, the two small creatures yelp together.
More hissing and hydraulics, then suddenly your drone's crate is opened. Two small faces peer in, each one with a single small eye and a number of spindly whiskers from the side of the head. A small bony beak sticks out near the bottom of the jaw. The two are identical in every way, save for a set of patterns tattooed across their faces. They look at your wasp curiously and squeak, first at your drone, then at each other. As they squeak and yelp into the crate they sway their heads and shake their whiskers, then rapidly shake their heads back and forth at each other as they yip and cackle at each other, occasionally slapping at one another before they seem to reach an agreement on whatever it is they are discussing.

As they dump out your drone in the constrictive membrane sack which is promptly hauled into the air and dumped into a tank of fluid which seems to start dissolving the membrane. Your sniffer takes to the sky, circling the area where you lost the buggy. There appears to be nothing out of the ordinary in the- wait, that's not right. One of the trees seems to flicker ever so slightly. You descend to get a closer look. As you move below the canopy the effect is even greater, like looking at something just beneath a surface of water. The effect covers a large sphere across a patch of jungle, and it could have easily been over-looked were it not for you sniffer, who seemed to steer itself directly for the anomaly by instinct. Even you are impressed with such outstanding performance, and you can feel your thinkers shutter slightly, then intensify their efforts with new found fervor. Your sniffer moves in, slowly. As it passes the shimmering wall its senses are filled with sight, sound and the electrical hum of machines and devices. A large ship sits in a clearing, the words "Hel's Angle" emblazoned on the side. Near the front you see the two humans fiddling with some large box.
"Ok, scanner's up, wake 'em up."
The other pulls out a small device, and with the flip of a switch a booming voice echoes from within the ship
"SYSTEM ONLINE: PERIMETER PATROL PROTOCOL ENGAGED. LETHAL FORCE AUTHORIZED."
The large box in front of the humans unfolds and a small rotating disc emerges on a long pole, as it spins you can immediately hear a loud siren from the box.
"Shit, where is it?"
"I see it!"
A hail of bullets tears apart the thicket in which your sniffer was hiding, clipping a leg in the process. Your drone evades, leaping from place to place with its wings.
The booming voice echoes from the ship once more. "TARGET ACQUIRED, ENGAGING."

Spread our forces out around the perimeter a bit. Start plinking from long-distance with a dedicated distraction snipe, then do a fly by with the wasps while our forces rush forward from the front and rear of the ship, reasoning that there should be slightly more cover from those angles.

Ideally, we engage the robot with our Fire Sprays. The heat should occlude sensors and disrupt internals better than our projectiles are likely to outside of chance fire.

Simultaneous breakout attempt from inside couldn't hurt.

Definitely too late. We're not done the research and such large drones are likely to take a handful of days to hatch at the least

Your wasps dive in through the sphere, arcing wide and circling around the ship, weaving through nearby trees in a mad and random pattern.
"TARGET ACQUIRED, NEUTRALIZING."
The massive hulking creature starts spinning on its waist, tearing apart the surrounding foliage. It is difficult to aim by degrees like this, but your warriors take up positions and open fire.

"The fuck is going on?"
"Take cover!"

Your wasps note another human emerging from a hatch on the top of the ship and unfold a long rifle from her back.

"TARGET LOST... TARGET AQUIRED....TARGET LO-TARGET AQU-TARGET LOST."
The large walker is spinning, unable to keep track of your wasps as they spin around the ship. You can see the small human on the top of the ship take several shots at your wasps with little success, and as a bolt of chitin enters one of the large grilles on the front of the engines with a loud grinding noise she leaps back down the hatch. A loud rumbling emanates from the ship as the front mounted turrets spring to life. A voice pipes in over a loudspeaker.
"You idiots, they're going to wreck the Angle! Forget the spotters!"
The turrets open fire, spraying the surrounding foliage with beams of intense heat. Trees and shrubs alike are vaporized and what isn't is set ablaze. Your warriors run from cover to cover, avoiding the wide arcing fire as best they can, but cover is quickly vanishing.
"I think I see one, shit it's huge!"
One of your warriors feels a pinch as several lead projectiles impact its carapace.
As the turrets rip through the jungle the illusion slowly evaporates, revealing the ship and its defenses. Your warriors' attacks largely glance off the ship's hull, but several land on a sensitive area: a fuel line, an intake valve, some glowing piece of unknown function that groans in protest as it is hit.

With the cloaking sphere dissipated your warriors quickly home in on their targets, singling out the vulnerable portions along the armored hull. Sparks fly and flames leap from exhaust ports.
"NEW TARGET ACQUIRED"
The large walker halts its spinning, zeroing in on the newly exposed warriors as they dive out of the incoming firestorm. The hail of lead rips into its carapace, tearing open its shoulder and severing its arm. The warrior raises its other and continues to fire, placing bolt after bolt into the large thusters of the Hel's Angle. The volley continues, and the warrior's torso is quickly liquefied from the wall of lead. By the time it lies still there is nothing left but a mush filled crater, its spot quickly filled by two more warriors. Another warrior takes a barrage of fire from a human's rifle, the chest slowly tearing open until the human dives back into cover "I'm dry!" He shouts, the other human tosses his a small rectangular piece of metal that he quickly places into his weapon.

A loud bang is heard from the ship's interior, and a plume of flame erupts from the left thruster as the entire assembly lowers into the dirt with a loud snap.

Your wasp claws and pounds on the tank furiously. The two Taidarens yip back away for a moment before looking at each other and making several whistles. Suddenly the entire room shakes with a loud bang and a ceiling panel falls, revealing a sparking conduit that quickly catches fire. The two yip and whistle as they quickly make their way to the conduit.

"DONE THING FOR QUEEN!"

Your thinker has assembled a makeshift form of translation for the strange language. It lacks the nuance of a proper translation, but you are not sure if that is due to the short time given or because these two specifically are simply not good with words.
"Fix fix, boss be mad."
"Boss always mad."
"Fix or clubbing."
"Club you first."
"I club you first!"
"Fix fix fix!"

Another explosion is felt rippling through the ship, and another fire crops up as a pipe bursts, shooting steaming coolant into the air.
"Fix fix!"
"No breaking, stop breaking!"
"Why breaking! Bad bad!"

Your wasp notices to two run off in a desperate effort to mitigate the damage and continues to tear at the tank. Another shock ripples through the ship, and with a well timed charge the tank falls from its place and cracks open on the floor like an egg.
You note your wasp is in a hangar of some sort. A large, spacious chamber covered in chains and pulleys, with large crates scattered across the floor and strapped down tight. On the far side of the room is a large door, the door itself is closed, but you can see the loading bay beyond is open and leads outside. On the other side is a small hatch, beside which are the two aliens.
"Escape."
"Escape!"
"Run run!"
"Boss give beating, angry angry!"
The two quickly move to the small hatch, slithering through in a practiced motion in a split moment.

"Hollow-points don't do shit!"
"Switch to anti-armor!"
"Grenade!"
Your warriors continue their fire, ducking behind what little cover is left standing amid the smoldering ashes of the jungle. The walker stumbles backwards from the heavy chitin slugs, but its endless fire continues. Another warrior is torn to pieces, then another. Your warriors move in closer to evade the ship's main weapons but the humans focus their fire, tearing into your warriors' armor.
"Fuck, they just keep coming!"

Within the Hel's Angle your wasp streaches its wings and quickly dives for the hatch as it seals behind the two aliens. A quick jab and a well placed claw and the hatch promptly gives way. You see a human run to the hatch with a weapon in hand, and his torso is quickly torn apart by a burst of your sting caster. The human drops without even making a sound, and your wasp tears open the hatch, lunging at the next crew member, tearing through her armor and severing the head with a well placed strike of the mandibles. You move to run down the fleeing Taidarens when a figure emerges from the air, not unlike the ship itself. It has a bulbous head encased in a thick metal shell, and six spiraling tendrils hanging from the oval shaped body. It quickly cycles through a number of colors before levitating into the air with a hum.

5 warriors left in the battle, and the cover of the forest has been burned away.

>Fall back
>Charge into melee
>Other

The alien creature matches the description of the Ceph from the Union computer, and seems to be suspended in the air using a similar technology as the buggy. It is drifting in thin air as if it were water, and its tentacles end in a mix of blades and weapons of unknown kind.

Your warriors charge, the sudden rush of movement catching the humans off guard. Your two wasps dive down from behind, their darting movements long forgotten, and slice through the armor of one of the humans, pulling him into the air and out of sight beyond the smoking canopy of fungal trees. The make-shift cover of crates and boxes is quickly decimated by a charging warrior, and the human falls backwards as he unloads his weapon into your drone. Bits of chitin and shredded flesh peel from your drone's carapace as its blades unsheathe. A click is heard from the human's rifle and your warrior brings down it's claws into him, his arms held up in a vain effort of survival.
The walker moves from target to target, tearing into your warriors as they rampage closer and closer. A warrior is brought down only feet from the walker, and the one behind it is too close, it brings its blade down into the walker's leg as the walker's guns split it down the middle. As it turns to the next one the thundering roar of its weapons suddenly stops, and as the barrels spin harmlessly your warriors surround it, tearing at the hydraulics of its legs and the motors in its arms. It disappears in a mound of chitin and slashing claws before your drones move to the door, impacting it like a speeding car and denting the steel frame.

Your wasp leaps at the strange alien, and the creature enters a wild spin, its arms unsheathing a number of blades and slicing at the drone. Before you can react a leg is gone, but your wasp's blade find their mark and pierce the Ceph's hide, ripping into one of its tentacles. The Ceph turns a deep red for a moment in a silent scream and tears the limb loose. The severed tentacle thrashes madly at you, warping the clawed inner surface around your drone's thorax. Your wasp slashes at it until it breaks free, and charges again, claws outstretched, and plunges them into the Cephs bulbous body. 1/2

The Ceph inverts itself, wrapping its limbs into a ball and constricting around your drone. Your wasp slashes and stabs at the creature, slicing off another two limbs before it throws you against the wall and rockets down the hall, its skin flashing a deep red as it thrashes about.
"Coil!"
You recognize that voice. The human, Lyle turns the corner, the Ceph hovers towards it in response as the human stairs your wasp down.

Can we talk about a drone design?

We completely lack a drone with Advanced electrical sensitivity microfibers, which could be useful in a technician drone--good for dealing with all this electrical wiring based technology:

worker carapace, legs, arms
no mandibles or claws
Advanced electric microfibers
basic EM radiation detection
moderate acoustic sensing

so, maybe, we should siege the ship outside to make sure they don't do any repairs while we breed more warriors?
We don't have many units left and it would suck if they somehow managed to kill them when we try to clear the ship.

This also give an opportunity to make another envoy drone and demand their unconditional surrender, the more intact we leave the ship, the better.

Aah, I see.

Well if it's going to be a technician drone then you ought to modify your specs a bit.

Worker Carapace, legs.
Mandible: Modified construction, excretes electrically conductive/insulating saliva that hardens after a time.
Arms/Claws: Dexterity/Tendril, for that delicate work.
Senses: Advanced Electrical Sensitivity, Advanced Radio/Radiation
Extra: Filter Lungs, Metallic Carapace (for radiation resistance)
>>
>>32668887
>the problem is back up.

back up?

I assume these guys are illegal poachers.
... though maybe you're right. If they send SOS messages in desperate move, we might be screwed since it will reveal that we are more advanced than we let on. Do we have any means to block transmissions?
>>
>>32668898
>Mandible: Modified construction, excretes electrically conductive/insulating saliva that hardens after a time.
That doesn't exist. You can't just make shit up. You have to pick from the Chinese menu of existing adaptations: http://pastebin.com/3hWCdbhN

>>
>>32668917
We have an antenna, that could let us interfere, and the planets natural blockers.
>>
>>32668876

We ought to send our workers over there now, and command our warriors currently on the outside to locate anything that looks like a communications dish and dismantle it.

When the workers get there we'll have more than enough bodies to drown them in. We can't afford to wait the 3 days for new warriors to hatch though because they could receive backup or the ship might have self repair systems or Scotty might reverse the modulation on the phase disruptor dish and get them out of there.
>>
>>32668878

Your warriors are a good foot or more taller than the humans, and are much bulkier. The sight of your charge was quite possibly more devastating psychologically than it was physically. Imagine being charged by a swarm of seven-foot tall bugs with bladed claws, and emptying an entire magazine into them only makes them angry.

>>
>>32668937
Are your still here?
I'm in the processes of ordering up some drone ideas.
>>
>>32668985
Sure, but the Queen isn't creatively sterile like the rest of the hive.

On the topic of the mandiles: I say that creating conductive concrete is outside the bounds of the mandibles, and probably a more appropriate stomach or organ adaption.

Also, our workers have fucking machetes strapped to their wrists, goddamn.
>>
>>32669027
Almost a meter long is too big to be a machete, more like a multi-purpose longsword.
>>
>>32669027
Well, it's more like an axe/hoe/patching trowel, but yes, it is a big, heavy serrated blade, and would be quite painful to be hit with. Your workers are not all that good at hitting moving things, but I will admit that if you get enough workers in one place one of them is bound to kill something.
>>
>>32668978
QM took our suggestion, and fluffed it as such, but he did the same with 'digger claws' -- We didn't really get any special dexterity/rock breaking bonuses, pretty sure. The normal worker arms are the dexterity model, and the normal worker claws are the breaking up stone model. Pretty optimized already.

The mouthbits arguably are the product of the first research project undertaken independently by the first Thinker, figuring out human language.

Some really simple things, yes. But glands to synthesize a substance that no drone has ever synthesized before? That isn't really as trivial as 'make the carapace colorful'.
>>
>>32669057
Truth. Still pretty fucking terrifying.
I'm starting to feel really surprised we haven't seen mention of our kind in any databases so far.

>>32669068
Speaking of killing; did any humans survive the slaughter outside the Hel's Angle?
>>
We need to get on researching the cyclotron particle beams and/or CIP guns, we are desperately in need of some heavier weaponry.
>>
>>32669074

I dunno, when we have drones that chemically refine raw metal ore into pure bricks I don't think that making electrical conductors/insulators is going to be that difficult.
>>
>>32668898
The primary goal is to at least have one drone design that has this precise sense ability, so that we can use it if and when we need it.

Secondary, it should be cheap--filter lungs are a big extra cost, as is advanced radio. Basic EM antennae are good for detecting sources of radiation, which is all that's needed--for precise radio data, the sessile radio drones can be used.

Dropping mandibles and blades also save on costs, since it's a noncombatant that won't be crushing things into powder, generally.
>>
>>32669107
>haven't seen mention of our kind in any databases so far.
It's called uncharted space for a reason.

The reason being hive civilization has not been here. To chart it.
>>
>>32669107
And come to think about it, since they're just 5 feet tall, the blade would be more than half as tall as the worker. Damn.
And anon, we came from the direction of an uncharted nebula, we're totally alien to the humans.
>>
>>32669116

We've got an abundance of nutrients and these mechanics aren't going to compose a large portion of our population. I think it's alright to splurge on fancy antennae.
>>
>>32669112
Those are apples and oranges. They have strong acids, this doesn't mean they have some much more extremely specialized substance for an application that has never been needed.
>>
>>32669107
No, the one carried away by the wasps and the one killed by the warriors were both torn up worse than the Mobile Infantry in the Starship Troopers movie. It was not pretty, and your drones are now covered in a decent amount of blood and bits.

>>32669112
That would fall under the ubiquitous "Infrastructure", after all, what is your nervous system but a big mess of wires?
>>
>>32669156

And infrastructure is laid by workers, isn't it? So we wouldn't even need to modify their mandibles at all.
>>
>>32669136
Nerve cells generally coat themselves in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myelin -- I don't see that necessarily being easily applicable in a 'goes on wet, dries and toughens up' way, though.
>>
>>32668936
Yes, four legs and two arms, so they have a preying mantis-like stature.

>>32669166
The workers set it up, and then it grows on its own. It's the cave goo that covers the walls of every insect alien hive. It keeps the air moist and warm, pipes food and water around, and can run power through beefed up nerves like power conduits.
>>
>>32669166
>laid by workers
>>31745103

>You begin to lay the eggs of several devices. Not quite drone but not machine either. Your workers take them and embed them into the walls. Within the day they hatch like seeds more than eggs, sprouting small tendrils of soft flesh. Your workers tend to the growing pipes and doors, and soon they will cover the hive.
>>
>>32669197
