My name is Cecile, and I'm sixteen years old. Though I'd like to think that my upbringing was pretty normal, my parents got a really good job offer last year that would force them to move to the opposite end of the country... and that was the end of my "normal childhood."

And after reading that weird book that my best friend Mina had sent to my house, I myself can't even be called "normal" anymore. My other friend Theresa seems to be in the same boat as me, but I'm not even sure if I should be thankful for that...

...but maybe I can use this weirdness as an excuse to patch things up between us.

Maybe.

Though my house was declared to be our designated hangout spot because it's the biggest, we'd also hang out here at Theresa's house sometimes when Allison would have guys over. And now that I'm finally back here after so long, the nostalgia is hitting me kind of hard.

While Theresa walks over to her bed and starts sifting through a pile of books, I decide to take advantage of this opportunity to poke around her room, maybe see what she's been up to since the last time I was here. But where should I start?

The first rule of snooping is to act like you're not actually snooping.

And so, I casually make my way across the room while Theresa's distracted, stopping in front of a large shelf that's pretty much covered in various figures. I notice some of these... there's that eyepatch guy and the robot with nice hair from that game series that Mina likes, and I think that she has this same pink robot girl too.

...and there's Godzilla... but everyone likes Godzilla.

>[1/?]
>>
>>32680318
Theresa and Mina should totally get along again once we fix whatever falling-out they had, huh. Fans of the same stuff even.
>>
>>32680318

Mina definitely doesn't have these one, though... it's a girl with long black hair and what looks like a Sherlock Holmes outfit. Pretty cute.

And here's a guy in a red suit, posed with some kind of samurai... a girl with a really fancy dress... yeah, I don't recognize any of these characters at all. The rest of the stuff here ranges from girls in super elaborate dresses to girls in swimsuits. That last one looks like something that Allison would wear to the beach.

Having finished inspecting Theresa's figure collection, I look over to see what Theresa's doing. And she's still going through her book pile.

Oh well, that means more snooping for me!

One of us. One of us.

Making my way over to the computer desk, the first thing I notice is the trophy that's currently acting as a jacket rack. Upon closer inspection, it says... oh. It's a track trophy.

I probably shouldn't mess with that.

Moving along, I notice a small figurine of a guy in a white suit and cape... he's wearing a top hat and monocle too. And right next to it is a few volumes of a comic that has the same character on their covers. Huh, this isn't in English.

She must've imported it or something.

And right here is... oh, this picture frame fell over. I should probably pick it up.

"Huh," I say out loud. "This is from that time the three of us won that huge stuffed panda plushie at the carnival."

Oh, here comes Theresa. I guess she finally found the book.

"Umm, is something wrong?" Theresa asks.
"No, I was just thinking about how long it's been since the last time we hung out like this," I reply as I look at the picture.
"Y- yeah, it has been a while," she says with a weak smile.

And then she notices what exactly it is that I'm holding.

"I um- I forgot that I left that lying there..." Theresa says, laughing nervously as she snatches the picture out of my hand. "Y- you wanted to see the book, right?" Theresa asks. "It's right over there, so I'll just-"
"Actually, there was something that I've been wondering for a long time now," I say, cutting her off.
"Hm?"
"What happened between you and Mina hate each other so much?" I ask. "I mean, I've tried to stay out of it up until now, but it's really been bothering me for a while now."

You're not getting out of this one, Theresa.

"'Hate'...?" Theresa stares at me. "I- I don't hate Mina!" she shouts. "It's just... some stuff happened," she mumbles.

"What -kind- of stuff happened?" I cross my arms. "I'm tired of being left in the dark... Mina always gets mad and changes the subject when I ask her, and you always run away."
"Th- that's because-" Theresa looks at the floor.
"Well I'm standing here in your house right now so your usual tactic isn't going to work this time. Now spill it."

With a really sad look on her face, Theresa looks at the picture that she took from me and walks over to her bed.

"I should've expected this to happen when you first asked to come over," Theresa mumbles as she sits down on the edge of her bed.

"After I was on the track team for a little while, Mina came up to me one day after practice," Theresa says. "She didn't like that I was spending so much time doing track stuff and asked me if I was ditching you two in favor of them..."

To be honest, I felt the same way.

"I was training really hard because I wanted to qualify for the regional finals, and I got mad that she didn't understand that so I kind of went off on her," Theresa says, lowering her head. "I said that getting in the finals was really important to me and Mina said that it sounded like track was more important to me tha-" she shakes her head. "And then I said some really mean stuff and she ran away crying."
"Whoa," I mumble.

It's hard for me to imagine Mina crying for any reason, much less that Theresa was able to hurt her feelings bad enough to make her break down outright.

"I knew I was wrong right after I said what I said, but..." Theresa sighs. "I dunno, I was too proud to apologize, I guess. So instead I focused all my attention on track and started avoiding the two of you. And then right after I won that thing," she points to the trophy on her desk, "I broke my leg and had to quit. It felt like God was punishing me for being such a stupid bitch."
"So that's why you didn't..." I say.
"Yeah," she nods. "I messed up my leg and I messed up things with Mina and it's pretty clear that I didn't deserve either."

Theresa then takes a deep breath to calm down, before turning back to face me.

"So don't blame her for this, okay?" Theresa asks. "All of it was my fault."

And then Theresa starts to look really nervous.

If Theresa of all people is getting this excited about the prospect of getting a cool ability, Mina's probably halfway through making a full costume as we speak.

...or she's passed out after reading the book.

I guess that's more likely.

"Mind if I looked through that?" I say, pointing to the book that Theresa's holding.

After we spend a little while comparing the dreams that each of us had after reading the book last night (same weird imagery, different... contents, I guess?), me and Theresa agree to call each other if we end up developing any real powers.

"Umm..." Theresa mumbles, "...my Mom's coming home soon so I have some chores to do later. I guess I'll see you next week?"

"Maybe we could meet up sometime before then?" I ask.
"Eh!?" Theresa gasps. "W- why do you want to-"
"I dunno, maybe could hang out... or maybe we could talk about anything else weird that goes on?"
"Oh," she sighs. "I guess that makes sense..."
"Umm, do you still have my number?" I ask. "And yours didn't change, did it?"
"No, it's the same as always," she shakes her head. "And I still have yours."
"Alright."

With that, I wave goodbye to Theresa and start on the way back home...

"Gh-" I stop dead in my tracks. "Stupid headache..."

Great, another Synapse. I just left Theresa back in her house, so does that mean that Irene's somewhere around here?

Irene said that the range for this Synapse thing varies depending on what Branch you have... but I have no idea what mine is. But this headache definitely means that Irene or someone else like her (like us?) is around, and it's still bright outside so I -think- it'll be safe to look around to see who it is.

Still can't hurt to be careful, though.

Taking care not to stand out to much, I continue along in the direction I was going when the Synapse first happened.

"I can't say that I do," she shakes her head. "But if you've met someone else with a fully realized Branch, that means that I'm going to have a harder time of this than I'd first thought," she sighs.

Huh? Harder time of what?

"Oh-" she snaps her fingers. "I never got the chance to properly introduce myself yesterday, my name is Charlotte," she says, extending a lace-gloved hand to me.

Black fingerless lace gloves and painted nails... I could never pull that off, but it really is pretty. Works nicely with that dress that she's wearing, too.

"Hm?"
"All Branches are catalogued," she says. "Every single one that exists, a new one hasn't been discovered in years. Every Branch has a specific set of abilities that it imparts, and there are certain people who make it a point to memorize as many as they can, starting with the more common ones."
"Wow, really?"
"Yes," she nods. "And when you tell someone your Branch's name as the more... arrogant types like to do, you're also telling them every single thing that you're capable of."

Oh... yeah, that makes sense.

"Off the top of my head, my ability to talk to animals is shared by at least five different Branches," Charlotte says, "but that's as far as someone can narrow it down just from that. Do you understand what I'm getting at?"
"Yeah, I think so," I nod.
"Good," she sighs. "You said that your Seed just sprouted today so I very much doubt that you even know yours Branch's name yet, but... do be careful, okay? That's information that you should only give to those who you really trust, not someone who you just randomly met on the street."

Great, now I feel like a jerk.

"You said that I have to be careful, is there some big dangerous thing going on with Branches that I don't know about?" I ask.

What she said about not blabbing about the name of my Branch is reasonable and all, but there's gotta to be a bigger reason behind it.

"Well, Cecile," Charlotte sighs, "there are several organizations out there who'd be more than willing to use whatever information that they can get in order to make you comply with their wishes. Criminal syndicates, occult researchers, people who think it's their God-given right to control everyone with a Branch... not to mention that there are certain risks to possessing one to begin with," she says, shaking her head.
"Uh," I say, fidgeting because this turn of conversation is kind of worrying, "does this mean that I'm in danger?"

Or that Mina and Theresa are in danger?

>[1/?]
>>
>>32688396

"Telling you all the risks may actually open you to said risks," Charlotte says, "but, well... just be careful about who you trust, okay? You seem to be someone who naturally ended up with a Seed, but there's a book going around that actually imparts them to people and I'm actually here to retrieve it before certain others can get their hands on it."

So she's here for the same reason as Irene?

"Depending on the Branch that's imparted and the person who gets it, that kind of thing can lead to disaster, you know?" Charlotte says.
"Yeah," I nod.

>>
>>32688450
Time to choose sides!
I'm for Charlotte's faction.

>>32688450
Are there any signs I should look for, in case I have a dangerous branch?
>>
>>32688476
Play them against each other
>>
>>32688450

I could see the danger of seeds being planted in people, especially if people are trying to gather up people with Branches. That being said, the people being affected are us, and our friends.

We should hear out a bit more then. I'd say help out too, but of course that is assuming that she trusts us and we trust her. That and I'd say we probably wouldn't have the time because we're trying to live a normal ass life.
>>
>>32688450
>[3/3]

"Hm," Charlotte scratches her head, "I'd feel kind of bad leaving a newbie like you all alone while the current situation in this town is going on, and you did help me with that poor cat yesterday morning so I know you're a good person..."
"I was just doing the right thing," I mumble.
"Yes, you were," she smiles at me.

She then starts mumbling under her breath whole looking off in the direction that Loki flew off in.

"Umm, Charlotte?" I call out.
"Y- yes, sorry!" Charlotte replies with a nervous laugh. "I was just a bit lost as to how to put this without sounding too forward, that's all."
"How to put what?"
"Er," she sighs, "I'll be willing to show you some pointers and offer my assistance should you need it. I know that it might sound kind of hypocritical coming from me when I just warned you about blindly trusting strangers, though..."

>how should I respond?
>>
I have a feeling that this is going to end up like a SMT game, where our two friends will have opposing ideas on how to use the books and we'll have to choose to side with either Mina, Theresa, a third party, or side with lucifer and fight god.
>>
>>32688517
Yes. I want help figureing all this out. Just please promise me you won't hurt me or any of my friends or family.
>>
>>32688517
> Accept
It shouldn't route-lock us (so to speak) right? Can still bro it up with Irene if we decide that's better later.
>>
>>32688517
"Please, yes, I'm so lost right now. Just promise me you're not secretly part of the magic mafia trying to trick me into a life of magical crime."
>>
>>32688517
She has shown that she is a nice person (at least to animals). Taking her pointers would probably be less risky than experimenting with unknown superpowers on our own.

Something to be weaved into the conversation at one point:
>Is the branch you get always random? Irene said that both a gardener and that book could give someone powers. Doesn't gardener imply that you can somehow choose what is planted? And does the book give everyone the same ability?
>>
>>32688517

"I don't think you're a bad person, so I have no reason not to trust you. Besides, there's still more questions I want to ask about all of this."
>>
>>32688517
>Sure
I guess? She seems mildly trustworthy, and let's face it, if we're not we'd be misplacing trust eventually anyway, might as well get it over with now.
>>
>writing
>>
>>32688396

> "...and I'm actually here to retrieve it before certain others can get their hands on it."
>certain others

Should probably get more info about this sometime later. Good chance it's a faction Charlotte is an opposite of, but then again, we don't know the goals of her faction either.
>>
"I'm completely lost when it comes to all of this, so any help would be great," I say. "And you seem to be a good person..."
"I'd at least like to -think- that I'm a good person," Charlotte laughs. "So should I take that as a 'yes?'"
"Yeah," I nod. "As long as you're not part of the magical mafia trying to trick me into a life of magical crime..."

And then she starts laughing. Hard.

C'mon, it wasn't THAT funny...

"N... no, I'm part of no such thing," Charlotte says, wiping tears from her eyes as she tries to catch her breath. "I'll have you know that my employer is an honest gentleman."
"That's good to hear," I reply.

>[1/?]
>>
>>32688642

"So, umm..." I begin, "is the Branch you get always random?" I ask. "Irene said that a Gardener could give powers, and then there's a book that can do the same... does the name 'Gardener' imply that they can pick whatever... 'seed' that they're giving? And do books give the same powers to everyone who reads it?"
"Ah, so this Irene person didn't explain it to you properly," Charlotte sighs. "Hmm, how do I put it..."

Charlotte paces around for a few seconds before finally clapping her hands together. It's kind of funny to watch her do stuff like that while she's wearing such a fancy dress.

"The way it was explained to me," Charlotte begins, "is that a Seed is kind of like knowledge."
"Huh?" I stare at her, completely lost as to what she's trying to say.
"Like when reading a normal book, two different people could get entirely different ideas even though they read the exact same thing. Like how one man can read the Bible and take from it that he needs to try and deidicate his life to saving everyone while another can read it and decide that it's telling him to kill everyone who disagrees with him."

>[2/?]
>>
>>32688711
>[3/3]

That's kind of... umm...

"The Seed is the same way," Charlotte says. "It develops differently in everyone who gets it, regardless of how you got it or who you are."
"Oh," I nod. "So it's pretty much random."
"People have tried and failed to consistently replicate specific abilities, so I guess it is."

So anyone can get any ability, and there's no way to figure out what they'll get before they read the book. I can understand why it would be considered dangerous.

And now I'm kind worried that I'm going to end up with some messed-up selfdestructive ability.

"But you don't have to worry," Charlotte says, crossing her arms over her chest. "Since you've accepted my help, I'll personally see to it that you have an easier time at this than I had."
"Heh... thanks," I reply with a weak smile.

Suddenly, I hear a low rumbling noise. Is that an animal growling?

"...oh dear," Charlotte says as she starts to blush. "I suppose that my assistance will have to wait another day. I'll faint from hunger if I try to keep on without getting something to eat."
"Oh," I laugh. "Sorry, I didn't mean to hold you up or anything.

Come to think of it, we've just kind of been standing here in the middle of the sidewalk for a while now.

"Would you like to join me for dinner?" Charlotte asks. "It's been a while since I ate with an actual human, you see..."

>yeah, I'm getting hungry myself

That's all for this thread, guys.
Fun with infodumps and figuring out the crap on Theresa's figure shelf and other stuff... I'm surprised that you got all of them, to be honest.
Now that Charlotte's gotten a proper introduction, the plot can get moving...

As per the past few threads, I'm going to be up for a little bit longer so I can answer questions or whatever if you want.

Thanks for playing!

Is Charlotte more or less best girl than Irene?
Are we neglecting Mina too much?
Was Irene lying (well, telling half-truths) about her powers? Even before we had Charlotte's more powerful example, Cecile noted how weak it seemed after all. Perhaps Irene didn't quite elaborate on all the effects of her branch?
Could we have found Theresa's porn on the PC if we'd looked hard, or is she impressively innocent?

You agreed to spend tomorrow in-game with her, so I'd say no.

Nothing that Irene said to you was a lie.
But at the same time, every single one of the characters shown thus far has withheld information from you.

Porn doesn't do it for Theresa, she prefers things with subtlety.

The only significant shadowgame we've played was not telling Irene or Char that we were involved with the book, which seems to be the safe call until we're relatively sure that whoever we end up telling is kosher. They both seem nice, but they're obviously way more in-the-know than we are and we barely know anything about them.

As of now we don't have anything to rule out that telling either of them won't result in magical spetsnaz busting down Mina and/or Theresa's doors and murdering their families to get their hands on the book.
