You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After taking the time to enjoy Luciana's masterful artwork, you and Marianne went to the library for her literature "class." Mostly, it consisted of her reading a book while you tried not to bother her too much.

But she -was- nice enough to find you something to read in the meantime, and so you were finally able to learn some stuff about the world!

>Congratulations, you are now a timid LLAMA!
>Llamas are strong and hardy... but also rather skittish.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while llamas may be majestic, they still don't count as people.

Marianne said before that her next class is etiquette... that's sure to be impossibly boring. As such, you decide to get your question out of the way while you still can.

"Hey Marianne?" you turn to the Princess as the two of you walk down the hallway.
"What is it?" Marianne asks.
"I was just wondering what kind of book you were reading."

Considering that reading is one of Marianne's hobbies, her taste in literature is probably pretty good, right?

"Oh, that?" Marianne says. "It was a book on the psychology of the populace of certain nations, and the things that the ruling classes there do to keep the citizenry under their power despite the massive oppression that they're committing at the same time," she sighs.
"...wow," you reply. "That sounds pretty heavy."
"Oh, it's extremely depressing," she says, shaking her head. "But as Father's heir, this is the kind of thing that I'll have to know about... if only to know how horribly other people in my station behave and how to avoid it."

Marianne did say that she considers this stuff to be depressing, so that's probably a sign that you shouldn't press the subject any further.

"Umm... have you been reading anything else lately?" you ask.
"Yes, but nothing particularly good," Marianne shrugs. "The memoirs of one of Sivarios's early holders was rather interesting, though."
"That's the guy who founded this country, right?"
"Yes," she nods. "It was interesting to learn something about my ancestor's personality, but also depressing when I think about the fact that he's still out there somewhere in the world, trapped in the form of a sword..."

Ugh, it's like everything that you try to talk about ends up leading in a bad direction.

Luckily, the two of you reach the classroom before you can say anything else to sour her mood. It's almost a shock to see that old, OLD butler who teaches this class again... he definitely -looks- like he's older than both Arnaud and Celestino put together, but it's not like you actually know how old those two actually are.

But now isn't the time to think about such things, you should probably do your best to pay attention to what he's talking about. If anything, it might serve to keep you from looking stupid in front of Luciana.

Though it's definitely a struggle, you actually manage to successfully force yourself to pay attention to the entirety of the old man's lecture. You're honestly pretty proud of yourself!

The topic of today's discussion is how to behave around foreign dignitaries without offending them, and there's a special focus on Eastern nations like Kinsen and Tenryou.

Eventually, the lecture shifts to the specifics of various customs. Bowing, how deep to bow, who to bow to... but you power through, and the dullness soon passes.

"I'm surprised that you didn't fall asleep there," Marianne says as the two of you exit the classroom.
"I'll have you know that I am a trained professional," you reply, puffing up your shoulders in a haughty manner.

I actually like Tidus.

I just think that Yuna was more of the focus of FFX more than Tidus. But even then, Tidus was a character that grew throughout the story and he was definitely one of the more dynamic characters in the game. Besides from the stupid ass laugh moment that he has, he grows a lot as a character.

I also think that he's a nice character that represents the player because one thousand years in Spira, we don't know shit, and we at least learn through him.

It'd probably be a good idea to bring something to read yourself, then.

"And, uh..." you scratch your head. "Aside from that, are there any other classes that you'll be taking in the place of ballroom dancing?" you ask.

Slowly, Marianne turns to you with a sinister grin on her face.

"Ah, I get it now," she snaps her fingers. "You're sore about the way that I teased Luciana!"
"Huh? No, I didn't mean it like that," you reply.
"I have to say that it's rather hypocritical of you, though... you've done your fair share of teasing her as well."
"Seriously, I didn't mean..."

But Marianne isn't hearing it, and continues to rag on you for the entire rest of the walk back to her room. While it -is- nice to see her in a better mood again, you do wish that it didn't have to be at your expense.

"And here we are, so I'll let you off the hook until tomorrow," Marianne says as the two of you stop in front of the door to her room.
"Thanks for being so considerate," you sigh.

And with that, Marianne heads into her room and closes the door behind her.

Your responsibilities for the day are done with, and that means that it is time for two things- food, and goofing off with your friends. After doublechecking to make sure that Marianne's door is closed all the way, you head to the nearest stairwell and descend to the basement.

As you make it to the corridor where the kitchen is, you notice that Nicolette's leaning on the wall beside the entrance... she looks pretty beat.

"Yeah, I heard the same thing," you say with a nervous laugh.

Nicolette goes on about the various annoying aspects of her job until Sylvie finally shows up.

"Umm, hey," Sylvie says, waving hello. "I guess I'm the last one to show up tonight, huh."
"Yeah, that's a surprise," you say.
"What the hell were you up today, anyways?" Nicolette asks.
"I was busy dragging my sisters away from Princess Elena so that she could..." Sylvie scowls. "Never mind that, let's get something to eat. My stomach's starting to growl like my father's does when he gets hungry!"
"Yeah right," Nicolette rolls her eyes. "I can feel that shit in the fucking floor when he really gets bad..."

Almost as if she was waiting for you to finish, Margot picks that exact moment to come from the back room with a cart in tow.

"Hey, Margot," Nicolette waves to her.
"And good evening to you, Captain Nicolette!" Margot replies. "The past week's been rather lonely without the three of you livening up the place," she says with a warm smile.
"Heh, thanks," you reply.

Margot then places plates of food in front of the three of you... the aroma wafting from them already has your mouth watering.

"Today's dinner is cream stew," Margot says. "I know it's nothing fancy, but we ran out of our entire stock of most of the fancier ingredients last night and we haven't gotten the chance to restock yet."
"Eheheh, you don't have to apologize for that..." Sylvle says with an extremely guilty look on her face.

Considering that her father's responsible for eating THAT MUCH food last night, you guess she must feel some guilt by association.

"So you three are all set?" Margot asks. "That's enough food?"
"Yeah, this is good," Nicolette nods. "Thanks, Margot."

With a bow, the middle-aged maid makes her way back into the back room.

Unable to hold yourself back any more, you pick up a spoon and immediately start chowing down on the delicious stew that Margot brought you. Fortunately, your lapse in manners doesn't offend your friends since they're both doing the exact same thing as you are.

To an outsider, the sight of the three of you devouring your food like starving animals must be horrible to behold... but nobody's watching you. Thankfully.

Before long, all of the cream stew is consumed and the three of you slowly rise from your seats with full stomachs. With your "work" done with, you leave the kitchen and head out into the hallway.

"So it's straight to the library then?" you ask.
"Yeah, I didn't have anything else to do today," Sylvie replies. "What about you, Nicolette?"

"Umm, okay?"

With a rather confused look on her face, Sylvie continues on her way to the library. Once she's far enough down the hallway, Nicolette turns to you.

"So, umm..." Nicolette mumbles, "...you're coming over to my place tomorrow night for dinner, right? I didn't want to talk about it in front of Sylvie for obvious reasons, but my Mom wanted to know if she needed to make an extra place setting for you too."

so what do we tell sylvie when she asks what we were talking about?
>>
"Yeah," you say, "Luciana mentioned it to me earlier."
"Figures that she'd be on top of that," Nicolette laughs. "So are you gonna be there?"
"Do you honestly think that I'd ever pass up on the chance to eat your mother's cooking?" you say with a toothy grin.
"Heh, I guess you do have a point there," she slaps you on the back. "I'll pass the message on to my Mom, then."
"Oh, and could you thank her for inviting me in the first place?"
"Will do!" she salutes to you.

That's really nice of her.

"Umm," Nicolette's face becomes slightly flushed, "Melanie's gonna be showing up too so I'll tell her to wait up for you. There's no point in showing up separately when you'll both be coming from the same place, right?"
"I guess not," you shrug.
"Great," she claps her hands. "And now that that's all done with, I guess I should let you go back to Sylvie before she starts to think that we're plotting against her or something."
"Uh, yeah..."

Waving goodbye to Nicolette, you turn around and make a brisk sprint down the hall in order to catch up with Sylvie.

Hell no. Tina is being filled with a male's mana, so he will become a man, and likely a partial clone of Reinhold.
Sylvie will end up in a relationship with Tinahold much like Spinnelle
>>
With an amused smile on his face, Gerhard watches on as Prince Emilio and Karel carry on with their magic lesson. Watching them like this reminds him of when Sylvie first started teaching Reinhold how to cast spells... though the one with the crush in this situation isn't the teacher, but rather the student.

Maybe things between these two will actually go well.

"Wow, I can't believe that you actually figured out how to conceptualize Script in a single day," Emilio says. "It took me like a whole week, and I had Father teaching me..."
"Well this is kind of the only thing that I've been focusing on for the past day," Karel replies, an embarrassed smile on her face.
"It's still pretty impressive," he shakes his head. "You should be proud!"
"Yeah, sure..." Karel mumbles. "So what do we do now, is there more meditating or something?"

"No," Emilio shakes his head. "Next up is when we figure out what elemental affinity you have."
"Oh yeah," Karel nods. "So how do we figure that out?"
"There's actually a spell for it, but it'd take a while to learn and it's not really useful in a practical sense unless you have the right affinity..." he says as he reaches into his pocket, "...but I got Uncle Gregory to find me this!"

With a triumphant pose, Emilio holds a scroll in the air.

"What's that?" Karel asks. "I mean- I know it's a scroll, but what spell's on it?"
"It's Spirit Field," Emilio replies. "Cast this and we'll know right away what affinity you have."
"Sounds cool," she nods.

Emilio walks up to Karel and hands her the scroll... and then looks around the area where they're standing.

"Umm, let's head to an area that's more clear," Emilio says with a nervous chuckle. "I don't want to risk ruining any of these books by having you stand too close to them when you cast it."
"Oh yeah," Karel replies, "we really should be careful about that..."

And so, the two make their way into a relatively empty area of the library.

"Umm, do you know how to use these?" Emilio asks.
"Yeah, Leopold taught me when I was little," she nods. "Unfurl the scroll and concentrate on it while saying the name."
"Yup, you got it... so let's get on with this."
"Aye aye."

As Karel undoes the adhesive seal on the scroll, Emilio backs away to a reasonably safe distance. She's never cast anything before so there's no way that she would have some impossibly large aura, so were he's standing should be pretty safe.

"Ready?" Emllio calls out.
"Yeah, should I cast it now?" Karel replies.
"Whenever you're ready!"

Taking a deep breath, Karel closes her eyes and holds the unfurled scroll out in front of her.

"Spirit Field!" she shouts.

In an instant, the scroll in her hands is consumed in flames... and the spell takes effect.

Dragons can never be the recipients of contracts. There's actually a tier system of sorts in the world, and dragons are on the top.

if someone could lok up the thread that I posted that info in, it would be appreciated.

Forming nearly a perfect sphere around her, countless droplets of water materialize around Karel and suspend themselves in midair.

"Whoa..." Karel gasps. "So this is my affinity?"
"I guess so," Emilio nods. "Your affinity is Water."
"Heh, that figures," she laughs. "So how long does this spell-"

The instant that Karel's attention is diverted from the spell that she cast, the droplets of water around her fall victim to the pull of gravity and come crashing down around her...

...and -on- her.

Karel flinches as she's caught in what may as well be an indoor rainstorm, her clothing completely drenched with water-

"Oh no..." Gerhard grits his teeth as he notices a certain... -transparency- in the young bodyguard's clothing. And though he is technically unrelated to this situation in any way, that doesn't mean that he doesn't have a personal stake in it...

"Black Out," Gerhard whispers as Script blinks in and out of existence around him.

And then the entire library is cloaked in darkness.

>>32709206
>Pretty sure the strongest contracted thing would be the affinity in the kid.
Elemental affinity is generally matrilineal, barring an overwhelming difference in magical ability between the parents.

Between two people with contracts, I'd imagine there'd have to be an incredible power difference between the contracting elementals in order to yield a child with the father's elemental affinity.

Whether they'd be able to use spells from both parents' contracting elementals is something I couldn't guess. That said, assuming a Devil Child can be born from a contractor father and a mundane mother, I can't see why the world wouldn't be able to make a two-contract Devil Child work.

"Whoa, what's going on!?" Emilio shouts, panicking thanks to the sudden loss of his sense of sight. "Karel!"
"I'm right here," Karel shouts back, "Stay right where you are, I'll-"

And then she lets out a muffled shriek as she feels her body become completely wrapped up in...

"There is no need to panic," Gerhard whispers. "I just wrapped a towel around you, that's all."
"Gerhard!?" Karel whisper-shouts. "But why-"

And then the realization hits her.

"Th... thanks..." she mumbles as she gets a firm hold of the linen and holds it close to her body.

Just as the lights come back.

"K- Karel!" Emilio shouts. "What just happened, the lights- wha?" he stares at her.
"My apologies for that," Gerhard says. "The enchantment for the various light fixtures in this room all expired at the same time. But as you can see, I've recast them... as well as brought a towel for your bodyguard here so he doesn't catch cold."
"Yeah, thanks," Karel mumbles, her face bright red.

Contracts with elemental spirits work differently from contracts with other beings. Elemental contractors produce Devil Children, other contractors don't pass on to the children.
