Welcome to Academy City. The time is evening, the weather is okay, and the date is August 20.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error, and you are having dinner with your girlfriend, school friend and a childish but gluttonous nun. You were pretty sure gluttony was one of the cardinal sins in her religion. Regardless of that this situation came about when you found your school friend, Kamijou Touma, in the hallway of your dormitories fussing over something or another. Now normally you wouldn’t have done anything but his mention of Sparky’s sister warranted some investigation. Thus, he was invited to dinner, as well as his roommate, a certain magical Index. You made sure to prepare an extra large portion for nun in any case and you settled down for some dinner.

You had had an eventful day today. It was going the last time you tried applying so much telekinetic force to an incendiary grenade while being in the same room as it. To be fair you hadn’t known beforehand. As a result you were sporting fresh burns along your arm and no longer had any eyebrows. The root you posited was the theft of Last Order that you and Nunotaba had pretty much orchestrated. It was no surprise then that the majority of the stakeholders within Level 6 Shift wanted you dead, or at least out of the way. Too bad for them, you thought, you were way too involved now and if things continued, you may be pushed in to interfering further.

As dinner wound down you,

>spoke with Touma privately
>spent some quality time with Asuka
>made fun of the Index

There had to be something said about Index’s eating habits and you’re not quite sure why Touma just rolled with it. Maybe he was just the type that rolled with the punches? Or was the Index really that stubborn?

“You know, gluttony is a cardinal sin right?” you prodded the white nun.

“Of course,” she answered.

Evidently she missed the way you were prodding at her.

“There is a significant passage in Proverbs about it, among others,” Index continued, “what of it?”

“He was talking about you,” Touma added.

“Touma,” the Index growled, “’It is a defect to eat, like beasts, through the sole motive of sensual gratification, and without any reasonable object.’ Are you making fun of me?”

“But you always eat whenever you want!” he protested.

“Humph, you are clearly ignorant of the times in which to take a meal,” Index would have none of it, “there are things like breakfast, brunch, lunch, les quatre-heures, tea time, dinner and supper, and many more besides. As if I could miss any of those and not be hungry, I will forgive your ignorance just this once.”

Defeated, Touma slumped back in his chair as Asuka and you put the dishes away. As it was late, Asuka bade you goodnight with a kiss before leaving. Index as well thanked you for the meal before heading back to Touma’s room. It was Touma who stayed behind at your request. You didn’t have any alcohol to offer so you’d just have to settle for the weird drinks that Touma had brought with him as the both of you enjoyed the night air on your balcony.

“So is this about Biribiri?” he asked.

“You could say that,” you answered.

“Her sister is a twin.”

“Yeah I know. Identical twins. Her family situation is a bit,” you paused, “complicated.”

“And you’re caught in the middle of it?”

You nodded.

“You’re going to help her out aren’t you?”

“I already am, it’s just,”

“I’m not going to lie, this is bigger than, this is bigger than all of us,” you admitted, “I didn’t hurt my arm because it was fun.”

“So you need help?”

“Maybe, maybe not, but I’m going to see it through to the end, it’s the right thing to do.”

“You’re not such a bad guy,” Touma said, “I wouldn’t feel bad helping you out.”

You shrugged.

“Well whatever you do, be careful around them alright?” you warned, “If your luck’s anything like I’ve heard.”

“Alright, thanks.”

“So anyway, you still interested in Aneue?”

Turning the conversation in to a more light-hearted topic, the two of you talked the night away.

The time is now morning, the weather is pleasant, and the date is August 21.

Waking up, you had several things on your mind, Sparky’s “family issues” notwithstanding. If you remembered correctly, Toshino Kyouko owed you some money today, just a little over half a million yen if you remembered correctly. The problem was now that you had no idea how to get in to contact with her, not to mention that Kaoru was rather interested in meeting her. It was probably because of the blue mana aura she was emitting. You’ve never seen anything quite like it apart from that brief glimpse at Misawa Cram School. Perhaps there was a connection there. The other thing you might want to look in to was a certain arms dealer that was recommended to you by Toulour. You were warned that he may not deal but other than that you had nothing else on him. It may be a good idea to get more ammo, given the gunfight yesterday. Who knows, maybe you would find other interesting illegal items that you’d like to acquire as well.

Let's collect. Service on the debt can be having lunch with Kaoru.
>>
It was time to collect on Toshino Kyouko’s debt. Gage wasn’t going to go anywhere soon. The money was probably not as important as it was the fact that you collected on it. You didn’t want anyone thinking you were soft and loose with your cash now. This didn’t get you any closer to actually finding out where Toshino Kyouko was at this time of day though so you were going to have to ask someone for help. Just as the thought occurred to you and you were two steps out of the door, your phone rang. It was Kaoru.

“Good morning Torikov-san,” she greeted, “I recall you wished to see Toshino-san today.”

“That’s the plan,” you told her.

“Do you have a means of contacting her?”

“No,” you heard her sigh.

“I was afraid of that,” she continued, “While she is registered in the Academy City databases as a person who exists, there are no records of her residence nor is there a record of her school.”

Now that was really weird. Kids here were often at least registered to a school, if only so they had place to stay. Toshino didn’t have either, which made you wonder how she’d been living all this time, not to mention all the debt she had piled up along the way. It was a bit scary to think about, having no financial security like that.

“There is also another problem.”

“What?”

“You’ll see soon enough,” she answered vaguely, “anyways I shall meet with you soon.”

Then she hung up as you reached the entrance of your dorms. Parked right out front was a grey sports cars and a familiar face.

“Torikov,” Lord Kudou greeted.

“Kudou.”

“A little bird told me that you are well acquainted with something my employer has a distinct interested in,” he cut to the chase, “Its name is Toshino Kyouko if memory serves and it owes you half a million yen. I have a proposition for you.”

“You want me to hand her over to you?”

“Smart lad, but not quite,” he took a puff of his cigar, “We’re willing to give you a significant amount of money for it, say, a hundred fold increase in the money you spent on it.”

This must have been the problem that Kaoru mentioned.

As always you weren’t going to agree to anything without getting more information.

“What are you going to do with her?” you asked.

“Frankly my boy, that is none of your business,” he replied with a smile.

“Then I’m not sure I want to go through with this deal. Besides, I recall Asuka told me I was a keeper if I could make money without trafficking drugs, humans or guns,” you answered, “I could introduce you to her later if that is what you want.”

His smile was gone now.

“Very well,” he sighed, “I will give you a fair warning that it is coveted by not just my employers. I would advise you to settle your debts swiftly and without delay.”

“Why do you call her ‘it’ anyway?”

“Why would I ascribe gender to a homunculus?” he put out his cigar, “I must be on my way, we’ll keep in touch. Have a good day Torikov.”

Then he got in his sports car and left. You managed to get a good look at and the noise it made was glorious. It was an Alfa Romeo Scighera and the styling was just as impressive as Kiyama’s Lambo. A moment of savouring the sight and you wondered how much it cost and if you could get one for yourself someday.

“I would advise against wishing for things that you may never be able to attain Torikov-san,” Kaoru’s voice spoke up from behind you.

You nearly jumped in surprise.

“There is only one Italdesign Scighera in the world and Lord Kudou is the owner of it,” she continued, “I heard many who have tried to dispossess him of it have met untimely ends.”

“Well that’s nice to know Kaoru,” you replied.

“But enough about his car, I have located Toshino-san. We should be able to catch up with her if we move fast enough.”

She led you away from the dorms.

“Anyway, how you’ve been?” you broke the silence of the walk.

“I believe I should be asking you that question,” she eyed your arm, “May I ask what you have done to lose your eyebrows and bandage the whole of your arm?”

“Cooking accident,” you answered quickly, “And did you really sneak up on me back there?”

“No, you were simply not paying me any attention,” she gave you a worried look, “I know that you may get this a lot but please take care of yourself, even when cooking.”

You made it out of School District 7 and in to School District 10.

“So about Toshino, you interested in her?” you asked, “Never thought you’d swing that way.”

“I will admit that I am curious as to who, or what, she is,” Kaoru replied evenly, “From a purely academic perspective of course. It’s not every day you meet a,”

“A homunculus?” you offered.

“I would not describe her as such but I suppose many would be quick to label her that. That is the problem many different cabals have. They have so very little information about her that it is natural they would seek to know more about her.”

“So she’s not quite human is what you’re saying.”

“Maybe, but that is not why I am seeking her out.”

“You’re offering protection.”

“From those who would seek to exploit her,” Kaoru nodded, “I am glad that at least you had turned down Lord Kudou’s offer.”

“And if I didn’t?”

“Then I would have considered our friendship over,” she answered easily, “I cannot abide those who treat others as mere objects.”

That was good to know. You had walked quite far and at a rather brisk pace to find Toshino Kyouko. Past the ruined areas of the Strange, you found her by one the canals, having taken shelter near one of the large flood drains. There was a large sack, large enough to be a sandbag with her.

“Torikov,” she didn’t seem happy to see you, “Day’s not over yet.”

“I didn’t say anything yet,” you raised both hands in mock surrender, “You got the money?”

“Like I said, day’s not over yet, I’ll get you the money,” she sure was defensive.

You shared a look with Kaoru.

“This may be remiss of me but how much left do you have to cover?” Kaoru asked

The red heads started whispering amongst themselves. You didn’t think Toshino had the money. Who the hell could make half a mil in week any way? If she had the means she wouldn’t be in debt in the first place. Then again, it was never about the money for you. You had an agreement, and if it was broken then you were going to have to do something about it. She had to pay up, in full, one way or another.

“Look, if you don’t have the money,” you started,

“I can help you look for work, and if that doesn’t pan out you could just work for me.”

“I said I’ll have the money idiot,” she shouted.

“If you say so,” you shrugged.

“And what gainful employment shall she find in your care?” Kaoru’s tone turned frosty.

“There’s a junkyard out in School District 17. I owe the owner some work hours,” you replied, “You working for me is the same as working for him. I’m not some sleazebag but I’m not running a charity here either.”

Toshino visibly sighed in relief.

“That is acceptable,” Kaoru’s warmth returned.

“So how much do you have so far anyway?” you asked.

The stack of bills she handed you was probably no more than 75k. It was impressive for a week’s worth given her situation.

“Keep it for now,” you handed it back, “Pay me back in full later.”

“Does it look like I have bank account?” Toshino asked.

“Honestly, I didn’t think you would, what with the homelessness and all,” you admitted.

“She needs a residence, yes, and an education,” Kaoru continued, “May I ask why you are not in possession of either?”

“No, so fucking stow it,” must be a touchy subject.

“As you wish, in the mean time I can offer food and shelter,” Kaoru continued unaffected, “Though three in my dorm room may be a bit cramped.”

“I can’t be picky but I need to know, are you one of them?” Toshino asked next.

“’Them’?”

“Yeah, some weirdoes in cosplay showed up starting shit up with me,” her spear materialised in her hand, “Yeah they had that same reaction too.”

She started backing up, with it pointed at you two. The blue glow around her grew more intense.

“Look, I just want my money alright?” you said

“Then what does she want?” she kept talking to you, “She get off to helping people or something?”

“No, it is simply my job,” Kaoru replied.

“And I’m the Prime Minister of Japan. What’s her angle Torikov?”

Things were going so smoothly too, you thought. It figured she might have an issue or two. It would also explain why Lord Kudou paid you a visit this morning. While you were aware of magic, it wasn’t really your thing either. Your track record with it wasn’t great.

“I don’t have all day,” you replied in false annoyance, “She has no angle. Why do I know this? One, she’s part of Judgement and a Sikh Paladin, helping you is in her job description. Two, she may have saved my skin a few times but if I had sold you out to some shifty dude for money then she would have been obligated to cut all ties with me, probably with her huge knife.”

“Hah, that’s it?” Toshino snorted.

“What more do you want from me? I trust her,” you were exasperated, “I go on if you want me to.”

“She might not start shit with me because you’re still here,” she countered.

“It is understandable that she is sceptical,” Kaoru sighed, “She’s already been attacked by magicians once already. I do not think she would be amenable to my offer, especially since I am one of them.”

“Hah, fucking knew it.”

“That said I have not done a thing to hurt you, would you be so unfair as to judge me by the actions of others?”

“I ain’t taking that chance chibi, no offence.”

“None taken but I wish you would give me a chance. After all, Torikov and I had to work out our differences too.”

“Fine, but I still don’t trust you,” Toshino let her spear dissipate.

Well it didn’t dissipate so much as it lost solidity, turning blue as it melted back in to her. The spear must have been some kind of mana construct then. While Toshino definitely didn’t trust either of you, Kaoru took her shopping without much trouble. You tagged along, if only to acquire some lunch. It definitely wasn’t because Toshino wanted you to keep an eye on Kaoru.

“Look you’re a big girl now you don’t need me to hold your hand do you?”

“N-n-no, of course not you idiot,” she replied, “I just don’t want to be alone.”

You raised your non-existent eyebrows.

“With her, with her I mean,” she stammered.

“Right,” you smiled.

In addition to being homeless, Toshino only had what she could carry in her sack. That meant she had only a few changes of clothes and some scavenged food and the wad of cash she had saved up for you. Kaoru bought her a cheap model that could call either you or her free of charge and could surf the net at dial up speed if she really tried. There were free phone charging stations about the city so batteries weren’t much of an issue. That had taken way past lunch time and even after that, you were done.

Kaoru also had her own shopping to do. You rarely saw her out of her school uniform anyway. It was almost like she was treating the outing as an excuse to spoil herself. Aside from some clothes and groceries she had come to a familiar weapon’s shop to pick up what Asuka had described as a “sick saïf”. The only comment she would share about it was, “he always wanted one.”

The time is now late afternoon, the weather is partly cloudy, and the date remains unchanged.

You parted ways with the girls at one of the malls. Toshino and Kaoru were headed up to their place together, get thing settled between the two of them, girly things. Now that you thought about it, it was getting pretty late in the day so you probably wanted to head home right about now if you were your normal self. However that didn’t mean you have to.

You decided to head to Heaven Canceller’s hospital. Visiting hours were still on and you wanted to check on both Nunotaba and Last Order. You didn’t get to go shopping with the little Sparky clone and even if you did buy her some clothes you weren’t sure if she’d ever be able to wear them if Level 6 Shift kept up. Unsurprisingly you found Nunotaba in Last Order’s room. Her right arm was in a sling and she had a coat draped over her as she brushed the younger girl’s hair lazily.

“How are you feeling?” you asked her.

“だいじょぶ, I will live,” she answered, “But now the we must really stop Level 6 Shift.”

“How’s Last Order doing?”

You noticed her squirming despite being completely unconscious.

“That was another one wasn’t it?”

“Number 10031,” Nunotaba elaborated, “あたし, must make preparations.”

“For what?”

“To stop the project,” she got up, “I know a few interested parties.”

“And the catch?”

“もう, it is no longer your concern. Think nothing of it,” she replied tersely and made for the door.

“I hope you know what you’re doing then,” you watched her leave.

“Me too.”

Then she was out the door and you were alone with Last Order. Like Nunotaba you couldn’t help but brush a few strands of Last Order’s hair. You weren’t there long, maybe fifteen minutes, before your phone started ringing. It was Touma.

“Hey, we need to talk,” he skipped the pleasantries and sounded like he was running, “How much do you about Biribiri’s family?”

Would Touma benefit from borrowing our stab resistant coat?

Eh, not really. He generally manages to disarm opponents with knives. He's only been stabbed twice, and he was caught off guard both times.

Today is the twenty first right?

“I’m with number 20,001 right now, elementary school age at most. Number 10,031 just got offed and she can feel it, even through the sedation,” you replied calmly.

In the background of the call you could hear screeching and honking.

“We need to meet up somewhere, take me to the location of the next experiment,” Touma finally said.

“The notes are in my room, I’ll meet you there,” you hung up.

Giving one last look at Last Order, you stepped out of the room and tore it back to your place. Touma looked like he had just arrived as given that he was breathing hard at your front door. As soon as you unlocked the door he rushed inside, going through the flurry of papers you had lying about the room.

“Tell me what happened.”

Touma gave you a manic look.

“How can you be so calm about this?” he asked.

“Just tell me what happened.”

“I met a sister on the way home,” he stopped tearing through the documents, “She wanted to keep a cat. She’s a bit strange, wanting to name it ‘Dog’ or ‘Schrödinger’, but she was like, was like.”

“Like any other girl right?”

He nodded.

“But I took my eyes off her for a minute and then, then I found her,” he choked a bit, “I don’t even know how any could recognise her but I knew it was her. So I called Anti-Skill but when they arrived she was gone and they just ignored it. You know I was probably going it a nightmare but then they showed up.”

“The rest of them huh?”

“Yeah and they were going on and on about some experiment or another so.”

Touma went back to searching through the data.

“I mean, I remember that night when your Teacher asked you those questions,” he continued, “What do you fight for? What do you kill for?”

You remembered well the answer you gave.

“She was killed there, like some animal and no one cares,” Touma didn’t stop speaking, “Well I do.”

“So you’re going to fight for the unfairness of the world?”

“No,” he answered, “Just for her. It was her life to live.”

He held up one of the papers.

“This experiment is based on the premise that if the first ranked Level 5 fought the third ranked Level 5 enough times he would level up. It’s almost like a game,” he gave you a smile, “Well this twisted game needs to be reset.”

“You sure you’re not just finding an excuse to push his teeth in a bit?” you smiled in turn.

“Absolutely not.”

Then his next question wiped the grin off of your face,

“What about Biribiri?”

“What about her?”

“She has to know about this, right?”

“She thinks she’s stopped the experiments for now,” you replied, “What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.”

“She met her sister yesterday.”

Well there went that plan.

The time is now dusk, the weather has cooled, and the date remains unchanged.

You needed to find Sparky before she did something drastic. That was assuming she hadn’t done something drastic already. Knowing her she probably already had. Still, both you and Touma had set out first to determine if Sparky was okay. The next experiment wouldn’t start until a few hours later anyway so you could spare some time. You gave her a call. Touma on the other hand devoted his attention to searching for her on foot.

“Sparky you there?”

She picked up but didn’t answer.

“Talk to me Sparky.”

“I’m done,” she barely whispered.

“No you’re not, talk to me.”

The both of you traced a strange path around the districts looking for her.

“I don’t have any other choice. They calculated for every outcome using the Tree Diagram.”

Her voice was tinged with desperation.

“Did they now? You know as well as I do Sparky that nothing goes according to plan.”

“I know.”

It was almost like she had seen in the future and the future wasn’t pretty.

“That’s why I’m going to defy them, show them all that the Railgun can put up a good fight.”

Touma patted you on the shoulder, motioning towards the windmills rotating in the wrong direction.

“Doesn’t sound like a good plan to me,” you answered.

A quick jog later and you had arrived.

“Well what else am I supposed to do?” she shouted over the phone.

You weren’t paying attention to your phone in any case.

“How about you listen to your big brother for once,” you called out to her.

She turned around with a start.

“You,” she had dropped her phone and pointed at Touma, “You.”

“She was your sister right?” Touma asked her.

Her gaze travelled between the two of you. She was too shocked for words as she leaned back on the railing and slumped down. You thought she was sobbing but in fact it was a strange laugh with an unnatural lilt.

“Haha, so that’s it,” she found it all so absurd, “So in the end it’s you two who are going to get in my way?”

“Of course not,” you replied, “we’re here to help you.”

“Then you can help by getting out of my way!”

She still wasn’t looking either of you in the eye as she slowly got up. Sparks flew from around her forehead and it looked like she was charging up just like her namesake. Touma was moving up, as if you shield you.

You could stir up the air to give different areas more or less permittivity. Create a path of least resistance away from you.

Of course, descriptions make it seem like she'll be shooting metal, not lightning.

You didn’t move to stop him. Touma was more that capable of dispelling one of her attacks, or so he claims. That was why the both of you were surprised when he took the lance head on without even bothering to guard himself. He barely cried out, strangling his pain as his body was wracked with electricity. It was you who caught him before he fell over.

“Weak,” he said, “That’s weak Biribiri. Come on. Hit me with your best shot.”

He shoved you back as he got up.

“You idiot why didn’t you block?” she voiced the question on your mind.

“Is that all you can do?” Touma continued, “You’ll never beat me if you don’t put your heart in to it.”

She almost took a step back before another bolt arced its way towards Touma, eliciting another pained grunt. Still he held firm in the face of the voltage coursing through him. His legs may as well be jelly but he was still standing. You wanted to interfere but you knew if you did now, the point he was trying to make would be lost.

“Hah, that attack will never reach him.”

He kept talking. It was probably keeping him conscious.

“What was your plan huh Biribiri? What are you fighting for?”

He rushed in, heedless of her next attack. It was slow to build up as ever.

“What are you killing for?”

Enveloping her in his embrace, he gave her a hug. She couldn’t shock him here, not with him so close.

“Can you tell me?” he asked her before unconsciousness took him.

Episode 44 End. Sorry chaps, I know I promised him but I’m falling asleep here.

Conceptual attack. Rev up that speech faggotry boys. Maybe now we’ll get to the Accelerator? When writefag and /tg/ meet, the story begins.
