The year is 1938. The Great War has long past and now is the time for innovation, exploration and adventure.

Throughout the world, airships are now common sights, airplanes have become the flying car, and high speed trains rule the transportation industry. Men and women of derring-do travel the world in search of ancient artifacts and long-thought extinct animals. Technology becomes almost indistinguishable from the magic that exists in the world.

But not all is right. In the ruins of post-war Germany, a new power rises led under the banner of Adolf Hitler, threatening to destroy the balance of the world. To the far east, Imperial Japan expands and slaughters its way through China. Air pirates dominate the skies and prey upon the lifeblood which now flows through the air. The occult and the mysterious strike terror and fear into the hearts of many.

That’s where you come in.

The Magical Girls come from a mysterious background, nobody knows where they come from or who they are. All that’s known is that they are powerful beings brimming with magic.

You are Magical Girl Liberty, fifteen year old Christine “Chris” Hunter.

The World of Tomorrow needs a new kind of hero.

“Tie them up.”

You’re brought to your knees by a pair of Gegenmagischtruppen, soldiers of the Magisch Krops. The collar around your neck is keeping you from transforming into your superpowered form. The monstrous cave echoes with the voices of your struggle. Sumire Kawanish (AKA Magical Girl Lightning) and Rana Scott (AKA Magical Girl Bomber) are brought to hell next to you. Your mother, Mister Caldwell, and Jeanine Deladrier (AKA Magical Girl Siren) are escorted away into a truck bearing the X mark of the Magisch Korps.

>>=[| THE MAGISCH KORPS |]=<<
>>=[| The Nazi Magic-Hunter Division |]=<<

You’re not concerned about that however, you’re more concerned about the immediate situation.

Rana says, “Anneliese! How could you do this to us?”

Anneliese Schultz (AKA Mecha Magical Girl Tiger) stands over you all. “I had to.” She definitely doesn’t look happy at the fact that she essentially betrayed you all. “I am very sorry.”

Sumire yells, “You backstabbing bitch! When I break free of this collar and these cuffs, I’m going to shove my naginata so far up your ass you’re going to be a parking meter!”

“I did what I thought was right, I have a duty to my country.” Anneliese walks away, adjusting the collar of her Nazi uniform.

All those days that you carted her around. She was relaying information to the Magisch Korps, and she even managed to get free and rejoin them. All that freedom you gave her. Everything you had done for her. And she just walks away from you.

That kind of hurts.

The two guards stand over you, waiting for Colonel Engelhardt to debrief them and come have a monologue with you. Sumire looks around. “Hey, I need to use the bathroom.” They look down at her. “Pretty please?” she says in a desperate attempt to look cute.

One of them loudly sighs, then grabs Sumire by collar of her sailor uniform and marches her off to some place private. The other guard looks down at you, his anti-magical rifle ready to blast you if you try anything.

You sigh. If this goes like Skull Island, you’re going to have a word or two with Sumire.

Rana asks you, “Is she going to escape without us?”

“Nah,” you say. “If anything, it’ll be chaos and all that good stuff and we’ll escape in the chaos no questions asked.” You nod to her. “Just stay calm, and we’ll be right as rain.”

Sumire and the guard come back, and she again is knelt down next to you, her hands bound and the anti-magical collar and her neck glowing blue. You ask her, “… the heck was that?”

“The heck was what?” she says.

“You didn’t try to get some big distraction?” you ask frustratedly.

“No, I really had to go to the goddamn bathroom,” says Sumire. “You’re not paying me enough to pull things out of my ass, Libby.”

“But what about Skull Island-“

“That was an accident.”

Rana looks confused at you two. “What happened at Skull Island?”

“Long story,” you say. “But thanks to Sumire, we escaped in the confusion while you went to take a potty break. Why didn’t you do it now?”

“BECAUSE I NEEDED TO GO TO THE BATHROOM!” whispers Sumire loudly. “God!”

Colonel Engelhardt walks over, escorted by her friend the Storm Ace her four personal bodyguards, Knives, Sabre, Court Sword, and Rapier. Engelhardt says, “Well, looks like we’ve caught up with you, Lady Liberty. I won’t spare you any words.” She looks over to Knives. “Major, take Liberty in your car and drive behind us will you?”

Knives grins, madly. Oh boy. “Gladly!” she snarls. She takes you by the arm and walks you over to her car. “You ever have sex in a car, Lady Liberty? It’s a fun experience that we’re about to have, you and I!”

You can’t even formulate words. She seats you in the passenger seat, and then she takes up a drivers position. You see Rana and Sumire get frogmarched into a truck in front of you.

“And don’t even try to escape,” says Knives. “You’ve lost.” She sets her knives down in the space between your seats.

“Heehee!” Knives is absolutely giddy at the prospect of being alone with you in a car. It’d be cute if she wasn’t a Kraut and a Nazi who hunts Magical Girls for a living and didn’t have some weirdo psychopathic crush on you. “You and me, Lady Liberty and the good Aryan Major! Oh, I just cannot wait for the moment when you and I shall share a kiss together!”

The convoy of trucks moves on through the dark tunnels. In the past week, your party made considerable progress, but the Magisch Korps always seemed to be right behind you. Last night, they surprised you in your sleep. You can’t help their dirty fighting you suppose.

“Tell you what, Liberty,” says Knives. She licks her sharp teeth. “What is your fetish? Should I affect a more stereotypical German accent for you? Perhaps you’re into exotics like that! Jawohl, mein herr! I am just vaiting for ze moment vhen you und I shall fuck each other’s brains out!”

You lean on the passenger door, silent as can be. Jeez, this girl. Thankfully, Knives hasn’t noticed the fact that you grabbed one of her anti-magic knives and are now cutting your rope bonds.

“What say you, Liberty?” says Knives. “Perhaps a kiss on the cheek for me?” She grabs a knife and holds it to your cheek. “Pretty please?”

> “Sure.” Punch her

You nod. “Sure.” She smiles and puckers her lips.

You give her the heaviest punch you can throw at her. She flies back hard enough to smash the window.

“Ahahaha!” She holds her lips, her fingers coated with blood. “That was amazing! You really do love-“ You kick her in the chest, throwing her out of the car. Now to hop into the driver’s seat. You grab the wheel and put the pedal to the metal. You swerve around the truck, seeing Sumire and Rana cheer you on.

The Magisch Korps is a little less receptive. They stand in their trucks and fire their guns at you. The car is turned to Swiss cheese as you drive outside the convoy on the rough rocky ground. You poke your head out. The front of the convoy is led by a massive drill tank. But in the back, your Mom, Jeanine, and Mister Caldwell are being held in a truck. Of course you could also try to help out Sumire and Rana.

You pull out a knife and bring it between your skin and the collar. You push hard, and it snaps in two.

You turn the wheel hard as you can and smash the car into the truck. A guard standing in it falls over the edge and meets the wheels of the next truck behind it. Rana and Sumire stand up.

“Liberty!” yells Sumire. “Toss us something!”

You pick up a knife. Thank god for right hand drive existing in Germany. You toss it over to them, and Rana manages to catch it in her teeth. The other guard yells for them to put it down, only for Sumire to headbutt him in the chest. He falls off the truck and hits the hood of the next one. Rana quickly saws Sumire’s binds off and then snaps the anti-magic collar.

>>=[| MAGICAL GIRL LIGHTNING! |]=<<

“Here we go!” yells Lightning. She jumps up, smashing the truck into the ground. She lands on the truck behind, smooshing the engine block into the ground and sending the rest of it end over end.

Rana meanwhile manages to get her restraints off.

>>=[| MAGICAL GIRL BOMBER! |]=<<

The convoy slows down, it appears that the Drill Tank is coming up to a giant stone gate.

Jesus Christ, they found the entrance to Atlantis and now they’re going to drill their way through.

Rana lands on the top of your car, as does Lightning. “Alright, Liberty! What’s the plan?”

“Sounds good!” says Lightning.

You swerve the car into the way of another truck. It slams into you, knocking you a bit insensible. Lightning and Rana jump onto the truck and start making short work of the occupants. You kick the door open and jump out, your Magical shields forming at your hands. You start running down the convoy, holding your shield to deflect fire, and even reflect it back at them.

Finally though, you manage to reach the end of the convoy. Mom and Mister Caldwell poke their heads out, seeing you coming.

Mom yells, “Hey! Kid! Watch out!”

You stop. A new Magical Girl, blonde and dressed like an old era musketeer, impacts the ground where you would have stood. She pulls a pair of Obrez rifles from her skirt and points them at you.

She fires her guns, the sawn rifles booming and echoing in the cave. First shots out, she pulls another pair out from her skirt, then fires again. Then another pair, and another pair. It soon becomes an intense barrage of Obrezi that now being littering the ground. She combines it with kicks and punches against your shields, as you simply tank the damage against you.

Finally, you see an opening. She’s reaching under her skirt again.

Nope.

You charge her, smashing the broadside of your shield against her. She flies into a rock, knocked out. Her Magical Girl regalia turns to cinders as she fades back into her regular uniform. She slumps over.

>>=[| MAGICAL GIRL CANDLELIGHT! |]=<<

You run over to Mom and the others. A guard raises his rifle to stop you. You answer him with a shield bash to the jaw. You quickly untie everyone.

Mom says, “Wow! You took those shots like a champion, Kid!”

“No, Mom. That was just Tuesday,” you say. You throw off her rope bindings. “Come on.”

Caldwell, in all his diesel-cyborg glory, yells, “Let’s save Atlantis!”

You run past the truck and meet up with Lightning and Bomber. “Here they come!” yells Lightning.

A huge swarm of infantry run at you, all armed with Assault Rifles and other mean weaponry of the age.

“Let’s do this!” you say.

“Lightning!”

“Alright!” Lightning slams the blade of your naginata onto your shield. You spin it, letting it charge up and glow white. It cackles and sparks with electric energy. Lightning spins her naginata back and preps it. “Let’s go!”

> COMBO ATTACK: LIBERTY STORM

You both rush forward, knocking over surprised troopers and guards. Suddenly, you come up to a huge hulking trooper in metal armor.

>>=[| MAGISCHJAEGER |]=<<
>>=[| Tier Two Wundersoldaten |]=<<

He roars like a gorilla and tosses Lightning aside. He jumps forward slams you into the ground. He brings his fists down on your shields like a drum session. Before you can even react, he grabs you by the neck and throws you forward.

You land on the wall, sliding down right next to the roaring Drill Tank as it works its way through the stone and rock. A pair of troopers rush at you. You spin your shield up and punch the first in the gut. He crumples to the ground. Another fires his rifle point blank at you. You backhand him. He flies into the drill, splattering his guts all over the sharp steel and metal.

The stone starts collapsing. Looks like you can escape through with a hard enough punch. You look back to see your party struggling to punch through the sheer numbers of the Magisch Korps.

You hop onto the driver’s cab of the Drill Tank. The driver looks at you and tries to pull out an MP40 for his own defense. You smash the window and toss him out onto the ground.

You hop into the driver’s seat.

Wow, if only you knew how to work a Drill Tank. You pull a lever. The drill immediately brakes to a halt, but the tank continues moving forward under the weight of rocks and stone. You grab the wheel and try spinning it. Nothing. To heck with it, you grab a switch and pull back on it. The drill tank starts moving backwards, much better. You roll right over a truck full of troopers, grinding them into paste.

The troopers that your party are struggling with break off and engage with you. The shots bounce harmlessly off the bulletproof glass and the metal cabin. You hit the first lever again, and the drill starts whining. It spins up brilliantly as troopers run out of the way.

Suddenly, the roof of the metal cabin is ripped off. You look up to see a very familiar person.

You bring up your shield. He blasts you with several rounds of minengeschoss ammunition. The cabin is lit up by the intense explosions. No dice however, you’re not on fire and you’re not dead. The Storm Ace is not amused by this, which is why he simply elects to throw a grenade into the cabin.

Yeah, that’s more troubling. You jump out. He grabs you by the neck, nearly crushing your windpipe. You struggle to breath as you try to force yourself out of his grip. Huh. That grenade didn’t explode. He must have baited you out. Smart man.

He tosses you onto the ground. You struggle to catch your breath as he hops down in front of you.

“Enough of this farce!” yells Engelhardt as her four elites and Anneliese walk behind you. She walks up to you. “It’s an admirable effort, Lady Liberty, but utterly in vain.”

Mister O’Donnell runs up next to her. “We’re about through the rock!”

“Good!” says Engelhardt. She grins. “Get them up.” Guards grab your arm as you and party are frogmarched alongside the Magisch Korps.

Lightning, who looks very beat up, says, “Valiant effort, Libby.” You roll your eyes. But soon, you see something that you hadn’t seen in ages.

Natural light.

Past the drilled out hole, stands before you a view that sets even Engelhardt speechless. The city of Atlantis, stood upon a pool of water. A single rickety wooden bridge connects you to there. It’s naught but ruins now. Moss, cracked stone, crumbling buildings. That was not the majestic view you thought it would be.

“This can’t be,” says Mister O’Donnell. He picks up the Shepard’s Journal that he stole back nearly a month ago. “This can’t be. The city, it should be bright, glowing. Fauna everywhere, and… crystals of life and magic! This… it’s naught but ruins.”

Engelhardt’s features harden. “Well, Mister O’Donnell. For your sake. Herr Ace, come. Major, Schultz, guard the prisoners.” The remaining troopers, Mister O’Donnell, the Storm Ace, and Colonel Engelhardt make their way across the bridge.

The four Elites all stand around you. Anneliese stares at you.

“Come on, Anneliese!” says Rana. “You have to help us!”

Knives and the other four laugh. “Ha! Her helping you? Don’t make us laugh. She is pureblooded German through and through! What makes her think she will help you?” Anneliese looks at you with an intense glare.

Why, she’d kill you now if it were expedient.” She taps her bleeding lip a bit with her knife. “Come to think of it, I honestly wouldn’t mind having sex with your corpse. That would be an interesting experience, but it would be lifeless!” She giggles a bit.

Rapier smiles at you. “Anyway, Liberty. Schultz is not just going to betray her country because of some kind words and the like.”

>>=[| MECHA MAGICAL GIRL TIGER! |]=<<

The four look back to see Tiger sweeping them away with the barrel of her gun. They fly off the cliff. You all look over to see them managing to hang onto a tree branch.

Knives yells, “You traitor! You will be brought before Frau Engelhardt herself! She will chase you to the ends of the Earth for this crime!”

Tiger says, “Well. Until then, I am sorry, Major.” She looks at you all. Mom, Mister Caldwell, and Bomber look impressed, while Siren and Lightning look a bit skeptical. “Liberty, I know I have betrayed you. You sigh, smiling. “We have bigger problems, Tiger. Right now, we’ve got to catch Engelhardt and Mister O’Donnell.” Tiger smiles at you, happy with that answer.

Mom nods. “That’s right. I’ve spent ten years of my life searching for Atlantis. I’m not about to just let it rot and crumble here.”

Mister Caldwell says, “But why is it ruins now? I thought the Atlanteans would have survived.”

“They would have,” says Mom. “But… maybe the Atlanteans knew the power they held. I mean, it doesn’t seem like there are any Atlanteans left, and if I know from the temples I’ve raided, they…” She blinks. “My god. They must have the city booby-trapped.”

Siren says, “We’re underneath Iceland. Iceland has a few active volcanoes that are set to erupt.”

You all look up. There’s a tiny but noticeable hole that leads to the outside. “Like this one,” says Mister Caldwell. “My god, we’re standing in a volcano.”

“Well, it won’t erupt, right?” says Bomber. “Right?”

“In my experience,” says Mom. “It probably will. We’ve got to catch them now.”

You all make your way across the bridge, leaving the Four Elites hanging off the tree on the cliff. You enter into the crumbling desolate city of Atlantis. The old stone columns and mighty buildings that may have perpetrated the city are nothing more than rubble and dust. Skeletons litter the streets, with broken and dim crystals lying about. If the Atlanteans survived whatever cataclysm that brought them under, they certainly didn’t survive the intervening years.

You run up the steps to an ancient acropolis. Troopers of the Magisch Korps turn to you and raise their rifles.

Mecha Magical Girl Tiger jumps in front of you and blasts them all away with a single round from her 88mm gun. You run past their corpses and bust through the door. “It’s over, Engelhardt!” you yell.

Engelhardt and Mister O’Donnell stand by the only thing in the acropolis, a stone pillar with a single Atlantean crystal inside. It glows brilliantly, and cackles with pure energy. Engelhardt turns to you, smiling. “As it happens, Lady Liberty. We’ve made this trip worthwhile.”

“Don’t!” yells Mom.

Mister O’Donnell pulls it out. He hands it to Colonel Engelhardt, smiling.

Then the walls shake. The very earth itself shakes. Everything shakes. “What’s going on!?” screams Lightning.

A trooper runs up to the door. “Frau Engelhardt! The volcano is erupting!”

Oh boy. Mom gasps in fright. “No!” she screams.

You all run out of the acropolis. Lava flows around the city, beginning to spill from cracks around the walls. You see the hole out blackening, as if something is blocking the hole. Then cables fly in through and settle down in the streets.

“Herr Ace!” yells Engelhardt as she struggles to lose.

The Storm Ace lands in front of you all, wielding his 30mm autocannon. Mister O’Donnell and Engelhardt run past him.

You all stand in his shadow, even Mecha Magical Girl Tiger is dwarfed by him.

The Storm Ace’s cannon whirs to life. You all duck and dodge the incoming the shells flying at you. Stone and dust flies into you as you work your way around him.

Tiger fires his gun at him. The shot impacts his chest, sending him stumbling backwards. His cannon has been rendered a melted wreck. Bomber follows up with a vicious onslaught of her dual M1921 Thompsons. The rounds ventilate him and slice up his arms.

“My turn!” yells Lightning. She jumps in and slices the Storm Ace’s arm off. He swipes his hand at her, only for Siren to join in the fray. She slices his good hand off and chops him with dual axes. She gives him a drop kick down the street.

“Liberty!” yells Lightning.

Your turn.

You spin your shields up and rush at him as he recovers. They glow white hot as you wind them back for the greatest punch of your life.

With a meaty crunch, the Storm Ace goes flying right past Engelhardt and Mister O’Donnell into a building. The building fall downs on top of him, burying him under tons of stone and rubble. Through the confusion, Engelhardt drops the Atlantean crystal as she is roped up, along with her Four Elites.

Knives yells, “So long! Liberty!”

“Wait!” yells Mister O’Donnell. “What about me!?” He stands there, holding the crystal.

“If you know what’s good for you, you will bring that crystal to me,” says Engelhardt as she roped into the hangar of the Kleine Fraulein.

He looks at you all, nervously holding the crystal. He knows what’s in store.

Lava starts flowing into the street. Later though. You all start running for the rocky wall, your only chance at making it to the outside world.

“Come back here, O’Donnell!” yells Mom. “That Crystal belongs in a museum! Not in some Nazi lab! Swear to god, I will show you what happens when you cross me and years of work!”

“Too bad!” yells Mister O’Donnell. He remains one step ahead of you as you start the climb. The rocks are sharp, rough, and coarse. They crumble under your weight as you start making upwards towards the exit. He continues climbing, he’s a natural at it. He stops and yells down at you all as the lava starts pooling under you. “I will leave Atlantis alive! You won’t!”

The rock he’s gripping slips. He screams as he loses all grip and falls. You try to catch him, but too little too late. He screams all the way down, to his death in a pool of lava.

You look down, the crystal. It’s barely holding on at a little outcropping. The rest of the party move up ahead of you. Mom reaches out for it, desperately trying to take it.

“Mom!” you yell. “Mom!”

She’s not listening to you. Goddamn it, no.

> “Mom, let it go!”

“Let it go! Mom!” you scream. Mom looks out to you, then tries again to reach for it. “Mom!”

The Atlantean Crystal slips off the outcropping.

Mom wails, “NO!”

A metallic hand grabs it, attached to a cable. You both stare at it, dumbfounded, then look to the source.

Mister Caldwell, the cyborg. “AHAHAHAHA! THE PERKS OF BEING POWERED BY DIESEL!” he screams. He laughs madly as he retracts the hand back to his arm. You grab Mom’s hand and pull her up.

Mister Caldwell fires his grappling hand. It latches onto the end of the hole. “Everyone!” he yells. “Grab on!” You all find something to hold onto. Tiger wills her heavy armor and gun to disappear and holds onto your back. Mom holds onto his arm. Siren and Bomber hold onto his other arm, while you and Lightning grab each individual shoulder. “Wow, what have they been feeding you?” he says.

“Shut up!” yells Mom.

He swings you all down, right over the Lava. He starts bringing you all up as he brings the hand and arm together. The perks of being a cyborg you suppose.

You all climb out of the hole and start making your way downhill. You look up to see the Kleine Fraulein, flying away. Engelhardt must still believe she’s won. Big mistake.

“Come on!” yells Mom.

You manage to craft together a small raft for you all to sit on as you float in the ocean. In the horizon, is the ship that Operator #5 chartered for this journey. Mister Caldwell fires a flare into the air, to garner their attention.

Lightning laughs a bit. “Well, that was a journey!” She looks at the Atlantean crystal in Mom’s hand. “So, how much do you think that’s worth?”

“Millions, billions potentially,” says Mom. Lightning’s eyes get starry as she grins. Mom leans down into Lightning’s face. “It’s going to a museum.”

Lightning pouts, then huffs and sits down next to you. Her cheeks are puffed out and her arms are crossed. “Jeez. Museum my ass.” She looks at you. “Can you believe your Mom?”

“She’s my Mom,” you say. “I only got one of her.”

“Figures,” says Lightning. “I better get paid extra for this shit.”

You sigh, leaning back. “You will, Lightning. You will. I’ll make sure of it.”

Lightning says, “Joy.”

You stand up and walk over to Mom. She holds the crystal in hand tight, she might cut herself on those edges there. “You doing alright, Mom?”

“I almost died there. I contemplated jumping over the crystal when it fell.” Mom sighs. “It’s stupid. I feel stupid now. Looking back on it, now I realize that I really am a terrible mom.”

You hug her. “Don’t say that. You might not have been there for me a lot, Mom. But… you’re the only I got, and I love you.”

“I love you too, Christine,” says Mom. “Thanks.” She boops your nose. “Tell you what, when we get back stateside, I should show you the museum it’ll go to. It’ll be a real treat!”

You never did like going to museums. But you suppose you can indulge Mom just this once. “Yeah, that sounds nice, Mom.”

The ship begins getting closer. Everyone stands on the raft waiting for it.

Time to go home.

That's it for today's return of Magical Girl Liberty Quest.

Soon, there'll be a short timeskip of MGL entering the year of 1939. Turbulent era. I'd like to hear your thoughts on what you'd like to see, what things I should do to make Magical Girl Liberty better, etc. Let me know.

Thanks for running!

As for ideas, I know you've said you'd like to keep it more episodic from now on, so maybe more 'one shot' style villains - mercs working for corrupt businessmen, or a Temple of Doom style cult. That also gives you a few more objectives than find the thing/person, which does seem to have been a bit of a recurring one so far - disrupt the supply of whatever it was they were mining in Temple of Doom, infiltrate and investigate the Innsmouth Boarding School for Girls, steal the prototype plane from the totally-not-nazi-funded-corporation's private testing lab without being obviously from the government. That kind of thing.

I don't really have much to say otherwise, I like the writing, though there are occasions where a little more proof reading would help, maybe a little more downtime and a few more character moments, but not too much; the balance is pretty good as it is - its probably just been that the last few threads have been all climax-y so there's not really been time to slow down.

It wouldn't make any thematic sense though. Liberty is pulp and Mecha Musume is based on an anti-war allegory.
