"What they really want...?" Sayaka blinks at you, before shrugging. "I...I'm not sure what you want to hear, Murderface. I mean, if you ask me, they want Oriko's head on a silver platter, and that's not exactly hard to figure out considering..." She waves a gloved hand to gesture to herself, you, the empty diner in general. "...all this. I mean, Christ, not only is it 3 in the fucking AM, but they've also got Mami involved in this."

Wait, Mami? Mami's involved? How? You feel whatever sleepiness left in you suddenly drain away in a cold, painful flood of heart-pounding panic. Was...was she one of the twenty-four-

"What?" Your Equerry's eyes go wide, here, and she quickly shakes her head as she realizes just what you mean a split-second later. "OH, Jesus, no, Murderface. Christ, no. Relax, alright? Things are urgent but not THAT urgent." You see the blue-haired Eversor force a smirk. "If Mami'd been one of the twenty-four girls we lost here, I think we'd be skipping this particular bit and going on a war footing ourselves. Hell, you'd be the one leading us into it, screaming your head off the entire time."

...Damn straight you would be, you agree, relaxing a little.

You don't care who it is. If anyone so much as harms a hair on Tomoe Mami's head, you'll set Mitakihara on fire if it means catching them in the flames.
>>
>>32775053

"Nah, when I say Mami's involved, she's..." Sayaka squints a bit, her brow furrowing as she attempts to find the right words to say. A moment later, she gives up, patting the table on front of her with her fingers. "Well, you know how she's like, right? How she seems to know everyone and everyone knows her and she knows what's happening everywhere, all the time?"

Kind...of? You know Mami's very capable, and she'd be a lot better at this Warmaster thing than you could ever be.

"Well, apparently she's been keeping tabs on this Church for a bit now. I think she started around the same time they set up shop here in Japan, couple of years ago." Sayaka nods. "Think she's on a first-name basis with the upper staff of the sect, or at least the reps you're gonna be meeting with. I'm pretty positive she set this whole thing up herself, I mean..." She holds up her smartphone. "She's the one who called me up to get you here and everything, Murderface."

So this Church of the Golden Land is...friendly with Mami, then? Is that what Sayaka is getting at?

"What I'm trying to get at, Murderface, is that for now, they look legit. I mean, if Mami gets along with them, then maybe they're not the coven of bloodthirsty cultists I usually consider these Blessed Lady fanatics to be." Sayaka offers you a wry smile. "Well, that, and I hear Kyoko usually sits in their sermons whenever she gets the chance, but I think it's just her goofing off somewhere quiet and peaceful for a short nap. And free food."

Ah. So that's...well. Maybe they're not so bad after all, then.

...But if Sayaka doesn't consider them dangerous, then why'd she ride your ass with you bringing Midori along?

Your Equerry frowns here, before reaching over and poking your forehead with a finger. "Because Oriko might get it into her head to try and fuck with us during the meeting, that's why! Chrissakes, Murderface, I know you're not a morning person but think a little! Jesus!"

>>
>>32775062

"That said, they're kind of skittish already, what with their main branches being blown up and all, so...you know." Sayaka pats the long metal case that can only house that sword with the weird gun-sheathe of hers. "We're trying to assure them that the Ninth's all it's cracked up to be: a professional Officio that's not to be fucked with at all times."

But what if they DO turn out to be a coven of bloodthirsty cultists? What then?

Sayaka's silent for a moment, before shrugging. "Mami's gonna be in there with us. I'd give 'em two, three seconds of screaming about their Blessed Lady before they get a Vindicare Makeover right in their stupid, screaming faces. All of them, at the same time."

Heh. Yeah, that's Mami for you.

"Anything else, Murderface?" Sayaka glances at her smartphone again, before cursing softly. "Anyway, forget it, we're cutting it really close. I need you to pick who you're taking into the meeting with you. Whoever you don't pick I'll post for overwatch or backup." She looks back at you for a moment. "Can't say where the meeting place is, but it's going to be a hotel room. One of the swanky ones that Mami uses often, I think."

>Who do you take into the meeting with you? You can only pick two.

> In any case, your further squirreling about the package reveals what looks like a small white envelope, unsealed. Inside is what looks to be a small wallet-sized picture of a girl with pink hair and crimson eyes, wearing a magical girl costume that was very, VERY familiar. It was obviously a self-taken photo, seeing as the girl was holding a smartphone up with one gloved hand - the other holding a sideways V sign with her fingers over her right eye. Because, considering how Sayaka described it, that's unlikely to happen and it'd be a good idea to bring a Callidus along which are trained in information retention and analysis like a Vanus? Also, if it does come down to a fight, having Callidus support would be optimal.

And even if nothing happens, we get to see Midori in a different environment, which would be welcome.

You decide to bring Midori and Kyoko. You tell Sayaka of your decision, and she lets out a small sigh, shaking her head. It's obvious she's not exactly...pleased with your decision, but the brief smirk curling her lips seems to suggest that she was also expecting it.

"Fine. I'll have Rea on overwatch, and Kuma on immediate backup, then." She stands up from her seat, lifting the metal case off of the table and onto her shoulder with one hand, while the other flares her cape out in a brief flourish. You follow suit a moment later, your own departure from the booth decidedly less graceful.

...Christ, you almost ate tile tripping over your heels there. Just how much did Midori wear you out earlier, anyway...?

As you finally stumble outside, you come upon Sayaka announcing your decision to your little group. Rea and Kumatora accepted their offered roles as you expected them to - your Vindicare Rank Leader with her usual complete lack of expression, and your former trainee (now Midori's assistant) with hot-blooded eagerness.

You were nonchalantly lighting a cigarette when Midori and Kyoko got their assignments, and you almost choked on your first pull as you saw the same fiery eagerness in Midori's eyes as she listened to Sayaka with rapt attention, hanging on to her every word.

It wasn't just that that surprised you, of course. Besides the fire, there was...well. Something that resembled...pride. Pride of a professional sort, and sharply-focused determination. As if by bringing her along, a switch inside your Callidus had been flipped, a button pressed. She was still your Midori, that much was clear, but there was something new to her, now. Something you're not accustomed to seeing.

Or something you never really bothered to look for.

[1/2]
>>
>>32776215

Kyoko, on the other hand, merely turned to grin at you, before flashing you a thumbs-up. That made you breathe a bit easier, too. Things may go up shit creek today in the worst way, but with Sakura Kyoko on your side, you could at least relax a bit more.

With the roles assigned, the four of you piled in back into Kyoko's car, you in the back seat with Midori, and Sayaka riding shotgun. Kumatora and Rea would be getting to the meeting in another method of conveyance, and the last you saw of them was of your Vindicare Rank Leader dragging Kumatora into an alley with one hand while drawing her blocky, futuristic-looking pistol from its holster with the other. A bright flash of light illuminating the entire alleyway they disappeared into for a split second.

"Thank you for letting me come along, sempai," Midori murmurs as gives your fingers a squeeze - and it's here that you realize that you've been holding each other's hands the moment you got into the car. While you're certainly no prude, the realization of it makes your cheeks burn somewhat.

It's...it's nothing, you manage to croak out in more or less the same volume. It's not really that hard to put her in the way of mortal peril like this, it's like second nature for you.

You force your lips into an awkward smile here. She knows that's just a joke, right?

"If you're already making jokes, then it really can't be helped, can it?" Midori shakes her head, a giggle escaping her lips. "Don't worry, sempai. I'll take care of myself. I just want to be there for you when you need me too, that's all."

But she's always been there for you--

"Not just as someone waiting for you to come home, sempai." Your Callidus shakes her head here. "I can't be just like that, even if...if it's romantic, too." She blushes, here. "I want to be there for you the way Miss Kyoko and Miss Sayaka are here for you."

...She wants to be a moocher and a bitch?

[2/3]
>>
>>32776225

"We heard that," Sayaka and Kyoko says at the same time, their twinned voices clear over the sound of your Equerry putting her gun-sword together. "I don't mind if you call me a bitch, Murderface - most of the time, anyway - but if you call Kyoko a moocher again..."

What?

"...Well, at least tell me what she owes you and I can pay you back, or something." Your Equerry glances at you from the rear-view mirror, amusement glinting in her blue eyes. "Seriously though, Murderface, if you're gonna be all lovey-dovey back there, just warn us in advance, yeah? So we can at least stop the car and avoid throwing up all over ourselves."

...Yeah, yeah. Assholes.

"Christ, that gravelly voice trying to sound all cute and romantic...ugh." Sayaka makes a grotesque exagerration of a dry heave, and Kyoko very nearly crashes into a hydrant as she starts to laugh. "Midorin, when you wake up early to make Murderface's breakfast, give her ginger tea instead of coffee. Do something for that weird voice of hers so she doesn't sound like she's gargling gravel all the damn time."

What? You...you don't really sound that bad, do you? Your voice is rough, sure, but--

You glance at Midori, and she shakes her head at you, while also doing her very best to stifle her own laughter. "N-no, you don't, sempai. Miss Sayaka's just teasing."

"No, I don't tease. I'm telling the truth." Sayaka intones coldly, before shrieking as Kyoko pokes her in the side. "G-GEH! KYOKO QUIT IT! Fuck, you almost made me drop the fucking slide there, Christ!"

"Well, you quit teasing Murderface, she's got enough to deal with already!"

"What, I can't poke fun at my own boss? That's in the rules of being an Equerry, you know!"

"Bullshit! Stop lying!"

[3/4]
>>
>>32776232

...Well. You may be going to a last-minute meeting with some bloodthirsty cultists, but...

It almost feels like you're getting your shit together, with this kind of atmosphere.

"So, are you two going to make it official, or what, Murderface?" Sayaka suddenly asks out of the blue. "Or are you going to...you know, just keep it under wraps?"

How do you respond?

It feels like an in character response, given the situation, and I feel it takes into account both Midori's feelings and the situation.

It also leaves the situation a bit open for the people who're rooting for Wendy and trying to patch things up there, but that's a bit meta.

After all this, though, then...well...you'll think about it, see where the both of you are at that point.

"Logical and smart. Seems like we're getting through to you somehow, Murderface." Sayaka turns from her seat to smirk at you, before going back to assembling her sword. "What about you, then, Midorin? How do you feel about Murderface's decision? After all, she--"

"I don't mind!" Midori blurts out, cutting your Equerry off and making her blink. "I...I mean, I'm not disappointed or anything, and I don't want Chiaki-sempai to worry about my feelings." She looks at you and nods. "B-besides, she's right, a lot of things are going on. Important things, and I understand completely if sempai wants to wait." It's here that she smiles. "I can wait as long as it takes, as long as it's for Chiaki-sempai."

Sayaka chuckles here, after a long moment of silence. Kyoko, meanwhile, lets out a low whistle. "That's a keeper, Murderface. Don't let her out of your sight no matter what."

Yeah. ...Not like you were planning to.

The car finally comes to a stop a few more minutes later, and you step out of the car to look up at what could be the ritziest hotel you've ever seen. Even classier than the one you met Iori in, a couple of lifetimes ago. It doesn't have a name emblazoned on the front foyer, like all the other hotels you've seen - just the roman numeral IX embossed in gold at the front door.

"Penthouse suite, Murderface." Sayaka calls as she herself steps out of the car, the gleaming gunmetal hulk of Blueberry Cheesecake Brownie hanging from her waist. "We're running a bit late, but I called ahead. Mami's already in the meeting room, they're all just waiting for us."

[1/2]
>>
>>32777547
It's pretty good art Hat. I'm halfway tempted to set that as my phone screen myself.
>>
>>32777581

...You can't help but you're still walking facefirst into an ambush, but if Mami's already there...

"Just relax and keep your wits about you, alright? Everyone. You too, Midori, and especially you, Kyoko." Sayaka checks the straps of her waist-slung sword a few times before looking up and nodding. "This is just a meeting, after all. Worst we can do is go in there looking like we're expecting a fight. So look like you're not and it'll be just fine."

Says someone who's wearing a fucking gun-sword on her hip.

"Exactly why I'm wearing it, Murderface," Sayaka explains patiently. "If they can see what I'm packing and where it's on me, they know I'm not up to anything funny." She points towards your own shoulder holster. "I was gonna ask you to open carry your Desert Eagle, too, instead of hiding it in your Shield or whatever - but you're already doing it, so that's fine."

...Ah. Right. That makes sense. Sort of, at least.

You're still wearing the Bangles too, under your sleeves. You'll...just let them remain concealed for now, just in case you need them.

"Seriously, though, this is the part I don't really like." Kyoko shakes her head, frowning up at the hotel. "That kinda foreboding...eh. Makes the spine tingle in a really bad way, this."

Like standing at the lip of a AC-130W Stinger Variant's embarkation ramp, huh?

"Geh, don't remind me, Murderface!" The red-haired Eversor shudders, before punching you in the arm, making you wince. "Come on, let's get this thing going already! I'm gonna miss breakfast at this rate!"

And with that, your small party makes its way into the hotel. The staff seem to be expecting your arrival - in that they completely ignore your presence, milling about whatever they do to keep an operation like this moving.

It's also here, as you move deeper into the premises, that you notice a particular formation that your three party mates immediately assume around you. Sayaka, your Equerry, at the front. Midori at your side, and Kyoko bringing up the rear. Not once does Kyoko move up to talk to Sayaka, or vice-versa. Midori not leaving your side is...predictable, but this...

You're not too sure what you feel about it.

The elevator ride is just as brief as your walk into the hotel - and what banter had there been earlier in the car seems to have stayed there, with your Equerry and your aide glancing at every door and every corner with sharp eyes and a hand near their weapons. No conversation whatsoever, just a professional chill coming from the red-and-blue duo - and a bit coming from the Callidus by your side as well.

After a bit more walking, you finally reach the penthouse suite. As you approach the door, you can faintly hear Mami's voice from behind it, as well as a few others you're not all that familiar with.

...Good. That means Mami hasn't been sacrificed and offered up to whatever bloodthirsty goddess these fanatics worship. That makes you relax a bit more. Only a bit, though.

"Alright, here we are." Sayaka says after what seems like an eternity, her shoulders drooping the slightest bit. "Meeting's just beyond this door, Murderface." She reaches out with a gloved hand, closing her fingers around the doorknob. "Anything you want to do before I let ourselves in?"

[]No. Let's do this. Open the door and lead the way, Sayaka.
[]Let them stay out here while you go in alone. If it turns nasty, then you want them to barge in there and start killing.

You know guys, I've been wondering. Sayaka and Kyouko seem not too far from their original personalities, just twisted to fit the setting. Pinky and Chiaki, are, of course, totally different, because Weird Time Shit. But Mami... this Mami really feels quite off from the original Mami. She might look closer than the other two on the surface, but deeper down... something feels strange. I wonder what it is?

Well, I agree that Mami is putting on probably the single best pokerface in the entire setting. She knows its far better to be loved then feared, and has taken the magical girl world by storm by being someone that a very many people, from every Officio, would die for if asked.

Just remember that despite all this crap Chiaki, Kharn, and everyone else is/has gone through over the dumb things, Mami's had her Golden Weapon this whole time (definitely one of the longer holders of such timeline wise), and it was heavily impolite that not even QB knows it.

To underestimate Mami is to fall to her spell.

I'm still not 100% convinced that the whole Chiaki vs Kirika deal wasn't some sort of set up to get rid of a Golden Rival. If Mami turns out to be some sort of ultimate Pinky disciple and is thus the final boss, I'm not gonna be TOO surprised.

"Understood, Warmaster." Sayaka's voice is cold, curt and crisp as she replies - and you immediately realize that no, she's not being a bitch to you now, but rather being a professional Equerry. YOUR Equerry. The difference is subtle for sure, but at the same time the Sayaka in front of you now is worlds apart from the one you're used to hating.

From someone who would gleefully make a pincushion out of your kidneys to someone who would willingly take all the bullets for you and then some.

Someday, you'll make her regret being in this position, you think.

A click, then a creak, and Sayaka pulls the door open - her cape billowing out behind her as she steps forward, into the suite proper. You hear voices - Mami's own joining in - greeting the Eversor in mild surprise. Sayaka says something in response a moment later, sounding the slightest bit sheepish, but otherwise still in the professional tone of voice she'd replied to you with earlier.

After a moment, she turns to wave you in.

You feel Midori's presence right behind you, and it's with a deep breath that you move into the suite yourself. Feeling your heels sink into the soft, wall-to-wall carpet inside.

And the very first thing you notice inside the suite - besides the tense atmosphere, anyway - is the girl sitting on what looks like a very comfortable chair, on the opposite side of a tea table set in the middle of the room. Your vision automatically locking onto her, as if someone had called attention to her and forced you to look, despite it being relatively quiet and everyone talking in hushed, careful tones.

You don't even notice Mami by the door, the blonde greeting you with a smile and a half-hug, before draping what feels like a heavy, oversized black leather greatcoat over your shoulders. The metal epaulets clinking against the bronzed skull shoulder guards as the garment settles upon you.

You remember her face from your dreams. The girl you supposedly loved before you woke up again a few months ago, in a dark apartment with booze in your breath and blood on your tongue.

She'd been staring into her cup of tea, and had since looked up at your arrival. Her dull copper eyes meeting yours, over a small mouth on the edge of frowning.

She looked angry, tired, and bitter all at the same time.

But more than anything, she looked cold and alone.

Alone, even with her entourage standing arrayed behind her - a pair of identical red-haired maids, a green-haired girl with a white-and-blue kimono sporting a snake motif, and...what appears to be a shivering comforter rolled up in the corner of the suite. A comforter with legs.

But you'd remember her long, checkered scarf anywhere, and the red leather jacket she's wearing seems new and all too familiar at the same time.

You manage to tear your gaze away from her long enough to have Mami lead you to the chair across from the seated girl. You plant your ass where she points, dutiful and proper. You don't even flinch as she places your Warmaster Cap on your lap - the skull-and-wings emblem replaced now with the symbol you chose. The shattered purple star, ringed by a gun barrel's silhouetted rifling.

You look back up at the ghost from your past, at the corpse from your nightmares.

You say her name, feeling it leave your lips in a gasp as the surprise of it all punches into your gut.

"...Warmaster Matsuda." Wendy Cooldown replies, carefully, evenly, her voice tightly controlled. As if forcing herself to say what she has to, rather than what she wants to. "Thank you for taking the time to join us."

A young girl sat alone in bustling cafe, idly sipping at her coffee as she stared out at the busy streets of Santa Destroy. Her hair was shaggy and unkempt, her glasses didn't quite fit properly over her tired, bagged eyes, and she wore a rather unstylish dull green track jacket, with frayed cuffs from years of anxious fidgeting. She looked like little more than a shut-in, finally emerging from her house for the first time in a week. Which, as it turned out, was entirely true.

The news droned on in the background, a young reporter going on about some crisis in a far off country. Not a word had been spoken about the massacre in Varrigan. Not a single word about an entire city being effectively erased from the map. There had been talk of Horzine Biotech declaring bankruptcy, but very little in the way of explanation. To the outside world, the event - quickly becoming known as the 'Varrigan City Massacre' in the magical girl world - had essentially never happened.

A few minutes past eleven in the morning, a woman walked in and took a seat across from the bespectacled girl. She was tall and buxom, with bright green hair cut short and piercing, narrow yellow eyes. She wore a black coat over a white blouse and tie, topped off with a black sun hat.

"Mornin', Em," she said, giving the girl a smug grin and a wink. Her voice was like silk, with just the slightest dash of Southern sunshine. "Lookin' good."

"Zis is ridiculous," the girl muttered, glowering. "I look ridiculous."

"Aw, that's nonsense, punkin! You're cute as a button!"

"I am not cute," she pouted with crossed arms. "I am Doctor Emma Strauss."

"Well, sure, I mean," the woman said, waving a hand, "you could use a bit of make up, a BRUSH, glasses that fit, some nicer clothes, but... Oh shoot, where was I going with that..."

"Can ve move onto business, please?" Strauss muttered. "Zis is embarassink enough as it is."

"Oh, come on, Em! How often do we get a chance to just sit and chat like this? How are things? Huh?"

"How are sinks? HOW ARE SINKS?! Vell, let's see," the girl began counting on her fingers as she spoke, "I lost my job, my home, my money, my experiments, not to mention all of my eqvipment und now I'm stuck in ze shittiest motel in Santa Destroy! Zat is how sinks are!"

"Come on now, it can't be that bad."

"It is EXACTLY zat bad!" The scraggly-haired girl took a sip of coffee, grumbling to herself. "No sanks to YOU. Please tell me exactly vhy I kept you around if you vere unable to varn me about a full-blown COUP IN MEIN OFFICIO?!”

“Because," the woman puckered her lips and batted her eyelashes, "deep down inside you're lonely and enjoy my company?”

“Your 'intelligence', or lack zereof, cost me EVERYSINK und you expect sit down und talk like nosink is wronk?! Or vas zis all a part of anozer vun of your little plans, hm?”

"Emma, baby, sweetie, honey," the green-haired woman said, in as condescending a tone as the doctor thought possible, "lemme learn you a thing about a thing, okay? You seem - or seemed, as the case may be - to have this little delusion up in that big old brain of yours that you're invincible. Untouchable. No one in their right mind would EVER want to come after the GREAT EMMA STRAUSS, no sir, am I right? Come on. Let's face facts, hon. Was it MY fault that you had jack all for security run by a bunch of Varrigan rent-a-cops and that mangy little pet experiment of yours? Hm? And was it my fault that you cloistered yourself away in your glorified basement and ignored the Officio that you were in charge of? Hm, hm?"

Strauss' lip twitched as she brought her cup up to her lips. She stayed silent, only giving her companion a piercing glare over the rims of her glasses, which was promptly ignored.

"For world-class genius, you can be pretty god damn stupid, Em."
>>
The doctor coughed and hack as hot coffee shot up her nose. "EXCUSE ME?"

"You heard me," the woman said, her patronizing smile disappearing in an instant. "You want my advice, you just ask, but don't pin this whole fiasco on me, now. Alright, sweetie?"

Strauss scowled as hard as she could, but remained speechless. Everything the woman had said was true, and she was far too pragmatic to try and deny it. Even as a timid looking waitress approached the table, the doctor kept furrowing her brow and waved the girl off without sparing her so much as a glance.

"Venti caramel non-fat latte, please," the green-haired woman said with a wink and a smile. "Thanks, hon."

The girl jotted the order down, repeated it back, then scampered off, so as not to risk the ire of the gruchy-looking nerd.

"So," the woman said, leaning over the table, "I'm 'nna take a wild shot in the dark here and say you're in the market for a bit of good old-fashioned revenge, no?"

"Right now, I don't know vhat I vant," the doctor murmurred, her gaze still wandering out the window. "Payback, sure. Vhy not make myself a billion dollars und finish ze Maerorus project vhile I'm at it, hm? I have nosink left, Frau. How am I supposed to get my revenge vhen everysink I own fits in ze trunk of my car?"

"I," the green-haired woman's eyes wandered as she feigned an innocent expression, "might be able to lend a hand. Assuming you ask nicely, that is."

"You? Hah!" Strauss barked. "I already sold my soul vunce before, I do not intend on repeatink my mistakes."

"Listen, sweetie. I'm not gonna bullshit you, because you're smarter than that. This... This 'Malal' character has been a thorn in my side for a good while now. Long story short, I want her gone and I want to know if you're in a position to lend a hand with that. Y'understand?"

"You are tryink to tell me zere is no catch?"

"Mutual interests, honey. You want your revenge, and I want her dead for," the woman waved a hand, her expression less cheerful as she tried to find the right words, "let's say personal reasons. Do we have a deal or do we have a deal?"

Strauss drummed her fingers on the table as she thought over her options.

"Meet me in vun veek," she finally said. "Bring me everysink you know regardink ze relationship betveen Ekaterina und zis... Malal. Ve vill see vhat can be done."

"Sounds like a date. Mind letting your old girl in on the plan?"

"I vill explain vunce I am sure it can be done, and only zen," Strauss said, taking another sip of coffee. "Until zat time, I vill say nosink."

"Keeping the cards close to our chest, are we? Well shoot, hun! You really ARE learning!"

The doctor nodded. She slouched over the table, holding her chin in her hand as her golden eyes flicked up to the woman across from her. "Regardless, I doubt it vill be possible viss only two people."

"Honey, please," the snake-eyed woman gave a wink and a smile, sending a shiver down Strauss' spine. "Why don't you let me worry about the details?"

>>
Strauss found herself in a dark room. Or at least, a dark space. She could recall the woman with the green hair handing her a package and leaving the cafe shortly after, then making her way back to the gaudy little turqouise and beige motel that was her current residence. Everything beyond that became something of a blur, which could only mean-

+Hello, Doctor.+

The voice rang out of the darkness, neither masculine nor feminine. In fact, it didn't seem to speak at all; the words simply appeared in Strauss' consciousness, as though she was present for a conversation that had never existed.

"Guten tag," the Doctor replied, bowing her head as a very slight, reserved smile decorated her face. "It has been some time, Herr Erste."

+Ten months and sixteen days by my count,+ the unvoice of the First replied, cool and emotionless. +I assume that have you received this meeting's agenda from Miss Prime?+

"Ve met zis mornink for coffee, ja."

The Doctor swore she heard a slight chuckle from the darkness. +It's funny, you know," the incubator mused. "Of all the awful human... concoctions, or what have you, each and every one tasted like filth. That is, with the exception of coffee."

Strauss nodded, but remained silent. Her expression of mild irritation said everything for her.

"You're a woman of science, Doctor. I expected you, of all people, to understand," the First said. "Regardless, please, have a seat. Do you have any questions or concerns before we begin our discussion?+

A leather sofa chair materialized beside the Doctor, and as she sat down she was delighted to find that it was just as comfortable as it looked. Her words came slowly as she thought out her question, almost hesitating to ask. "Zere is... vun sink. Tell me, Herr Erste, vhat has happened to my city?"
>>
+Ah. Yes. Varrigan. Quite the commotion you have caused, Doctor,+ despite its unwavering tone, the voice sounded... faintly amused. +The Eighth and Thirteenth have spent quite the sum to hush the masses. Full media blackout, all Officios involved have scrubbed their records of the event. 'The works', as they say.+

"Und ze city itself?"

+The Eighth will be left to do with it as he wishes, however,+ the incubator paused for a moment, and the Doctor could almost hear the smirk in its voice, +in the best interests of our operation, I was obliged to fill my dear brother in on the nature of the city's, ah, newest inhabitants. What happens to it now is entirely in his hands. Though, he did express some interest in constructing a maximum-security penitentiary in the city's place.+

"He vants to," Strauss looked over her glasses at the non-entity, "turn it into a prison?"

+Something of the sort, yes,+ the First replied. +He has always been something of a wildcard, as you know. He always did have his eye on Varrigan after the Thirteenth took control.+

"Und it vould be a fool's errand to invade ze city..."

+Precisely. I could not have my dear brother meet such a dreadful fate,+ she was sure it was amused by now. +Could you imagine, Doctor?+

The Doctor readjusted herself, crossing her legs as she sat back in her chair. "Ja," she muttered, "vell zen. If zat is all, could ve move on to business?"

+Very well, very well. Moving onto the details of the Maerorus Project, there is, ah, good news and bad news," the First stated. +Which would you prefer to hear first, Doctor?+

Strauss hesitated. For the first time, she was staring down the consequences of her miscalculations. Part of her wanted to skip the discussion entirely and carry on living, the fate of her life's work in constant limbo. At least then she would be able to live with the hope of resuming it one day.

After a deep breath to steel herself, the Doctor spoke. "Give me ze bad news first, zen."
>>
>>32778852

It's an abomination. My hopes and dreams are gone
>>
+Oh, excellent. For a moment I was worried I would have to find a way to tell you the good news first, and that would be dreadfully awkward,+ the incubator said. +The bad news, quite simply, is that the Maerorus Project will be suspended for the time being.+

"Vhat-"

+My associates and I have deemed it prudent to place the project on hold for a minimum five year waiting period,+ it continued, ignoring the shocked and wide-eyed Doctor. +At the conclusion of this waiting period, assuming you have not expired, we will review the continued necessity of the project.+

"But- My- My vork," Strauss stammered, "You can't-"

+As a matter of fact, I can. Please do not embarass us both with pleas for sympathy. Must I remind you that it was your own arrogance that wasted billions of dollars and a over a decade of work in a single, spectacular display of ineptitude? Do I make myself clear, Doctor?+

The Doctor let her head down and held her face in her hands, nodding silently. She could already feel a knot in her stomach and a pain in her throat.

+Good,+ the incubator said, not a hint of emotion in its voice. +As for the good news, we are prepared to issue you a regular pension as a sign of our gratitude for your past work. It should be sufficient to live off of, though, I doubt you will find yourself in the lap of luxury.+

Midori does not know about Wendy does she? She is going to be rather confused by Wendys attitude.
>>
"A- A pension?!" Strauss shouted. "I am not some obsolete object to be placed in storage!"

+For the next five years, Doctor, that is exactly what you are. Take solace in the fact that we did not choose to scrap the project all together.+

The Doctor's head dropped into her hands once more. All she could do was mutter a quiet, "Schiesse..."

+Miss Prime will deliver your new living arrangements within the week. Barring any emergencies, you are to remain indoors until that time," the First explained. "Assuming you have no further questions or concerns, I believe we have reached the end of our meeting, yes?"

Strauss nodded again, without a word.

+Excellent. Our meeting is adjourned then," the incubator said. With a moment's hesitation, it added, "If it is any consolation, I believe some of my brothers were eager for you to resume work on Project Valhalla. I will put you in contact with them as soon as possible. Good day, Doctor."

The voice faded into the back of her mind as the darkness closed in. It seemed only moments later that Strauss opened her sore and bleary eyes, finding herself tucked into bed, night having long fallen over the city. The Doctor pushed herself out of bed and reached for the bedside lamp, then reconsidering as her hand touched the switch. For now, she was more content to sit in the dark.

Strauss' eyes grew hot and throat sore. For the first time since she was a little girl, Doctor Emma Strauss cried. It was as if a dam had broken. She held nothing back; tears ran in twin streams down her flushed crimson face.

Somehow, she hadn't fully realized everything that had transpired until then. A small part of her had desperately clung to the hope that she would be able to resume her work after a brief hiatus. Now, she finally understood just how much she had lost, and how much she had truly treasured all that she had created.

Sweet, sad Typhus. Cute little Lil and her furry feet. Clair and look on her face every time she got a new toy. Butterfingers, her favourite pet. The ever-loyal Thorne. Ekaterina, the one who had rose the highest above them all. Strauss had never loved them as a mother should have, but they were her family nonetheless. And it was likely that she would never see any of them every again, because of the one they called 'Malal'.

As she wept, Strauss could only muster one clear thought through the haze of loss and regret enveloping her mind.

Malal would pay. There would come a day when Malal would lie beaten and broken, begging forgiveness, with only regret and sorrow left in her heart. Only then, as she watched everything she had built crumble before her eyes, would Malal die.

Only then would Doctor Emma Strauss have her revenge.

Magical Scribe Eleanor Slam versus The Grind Part II

It was late Friday night when the weasel summoned me to his office and informed me that I wasn't needed anymore. Rather than retirement, I was going to be shipped out. From what I've been told, it's so that his brothers wouldn't find out that he fucked me up as bad as he did. I didn't understand it at the time, but I think he was counting on me witching out sometime after I arrived here.

So I had to gather my few worldly possessions for a one-way flight. And I had to be ready in a day.

It didn't take very long to pack, considering how few things I had : The aforementioned crummy soap and toothpaste; a toothbrush with the blue strip nearly worn away; a plastic hairbrush that couldn't straighten my frustratingly curly hair no matter how long I brushed; a couple sets of plain underwear, an old school uniform, and five socks that didn't match (thank you, thrift store); the stuff I wore when I was brought back here; a peppermint candy I was able to sneak out of the bowl in the lobby; one grief seed; all my remaining funds; and a plastic sack to put everything in.

That left me with a lot of free time that I didn't really know how to spend. I tried calling my house with a payphone - there wasn't a phone in my room - and heard my Dad pick up, but he hung up as soon as I started talking. So I just lay on my little mat and tried to sleep through the rest of the day. And when that didn't take, I started pacing around the room. Trying to tell myself that things would pick up out there, really.

At some point, I heard someone knocking at my door and figured it was time to report to the weasel shit. So I threw it open and growled "What?"

First thing I saw was a sack labeled Burger Suplex, same as the food I'd been getting all week. Second thing I saw was a milkshake with a similar label. Then a face partly concealed by a checkerboard scarf. And finally, a set of wide, tired eyes.

We just kind of stood there like that for a minute. I was kind of embarrassed, and a little bit nervous since I felt like I should say something. It took more effort than it should have for me to finally squeak out a "thanks" for the gesture. For really the first vaguely nice thing that'd happened to me in months.

She handed me the goods and murmured "yeah" before walking away. The scarf trailing behind her did look pretty cool.

Thinking about how much better that stuff tasted is making my stomach protest.

There wasn't any fanfare about my leaving the next morning. Just a message from that asshole cat weasel rabbit fucker to get to the black car outside right away. I wasn't planning on sticking around, so I rushed on out to the car in question. Just wanted to get it over with.

There was something wrapped up in soggy plastic paper waiting for me. I did up my seat belt before unwrapping my gift. It was food. An unholy fusion of egg, bacon, and muffin, and absolutely delicious. Especially since I hadn't had anything resembling breakfast in months.

The front and back seats were separated by a partition - I guess to keep the crazies from attacking the driver - so instead of seeing where I was going, I kept myself entertained by looking out the back window and swinging my feet. Watching the city fall behind right up to the airport.

I had the paper crumpled up in one hand and my little bag of things in the other as the car pulled to a stop. I unbuckled myself and got out, waiting for somebody - maybe the driver, maybe a person waiting here - to walk me through this whole "immigrating" thing. I'm pretty sure I'd need a passport or something like that which I didn't already have. And I certainly can't afford my own flight with this pocket change.

The car drove off as soon as I was out, so it's not them. I scan the drop-off area to find some sign of where to go. I thought I may have been stranded there intentionally.

"Hey."

>Do we know of Project Valhalla?

You might.
>>
How'd she do that? I could have sworn she wasn't there earlier. But a few feet away, the same lady I met last night beckoned me over. Her other hand was carrying a paper sack.

After tossing my wrapper into the first trash bin I could find, I followed after her like I was on a goddamn leash. Neither of us said much of anything to each other. Again, I didn't really know what to say here, since I already thanked her last night. I must have looked like a star-struck little kid following around her big sister. Really freaking embarrassing.

It wasn't until she reached the point of no return that she spoke, murmuring, "...Hey. ...You got a shitty deal. ...We could have helped, and we just piled more on."

I couldn't deny that, so I just nodded along. But she's the only one who made any effort to make things suck less for me. That counts for something.

She handed me the sack, which had a passport sticking out the top. I took that out and carried the two bags with my other hand.

"Eightball's trying to hush things up," she explained, sounding pretty bitter, "and it's gonna work. ...But we'll see what we can do."

The lady awkwardly waved goodbye to me, and I returned it even more awkwardly, since I had my hands full. After customs confiscated my shampoo for being too big, I had to hurry to join the rest of the passengers before the plane took off.

The lady in the checkered scarf had pulled some strings. That's what I gathered from finding out I was sitting in first class. It was a commercial airliner, so I wasn't alone, but it meant my lunch was paid for. With nobody seated next to me I had plenty of leg room and a window seat, so I was feeling pretty good, all things considered.

I let the plastic bag containing my worldly possessions drop into the empty seat. I wanted to see what was in the gift bag that lady handed me - the one that bore the emblem of the Eighth. Also settled on something less awkward to refer to her as : "Checkers".

[3/7]
>>
I think it was a care package, or something close to one that was thrown together at a moment's notice due to how sudden my departure was. Beneath the hastily added tissue paper were a few small, non-perishable foodstuffs; a lot of chocolate; an extra grief seed; one of those posters with a cat holding on to a branch with the inspiring caption of "hang in there"; and a card with a phone number on it. Curious, but not something I could do anything about right now. The phone in my cabin - I didn't know they even had those - cost more money than I could really afford.

The flight really wasn't as bad as I'd anticipated. Maybe because I slept through most of it. The seat, after the flight attendant gave me a blanket, was comfortable than my bed back at the Officio, so that probably helped.

I wasn't awake at the time the plane touched down, but the stewardess told me it was time to leave. Which is a shame, because having regular meals and a cozy place to sleep was something that I could get used to. I thanked her for waking me, and for the blanket, and the other things that made the trip bearable, and gathered my things.

It was getting dark out when I arrived. I wasn't sure where I was supposed to go at first, since I'd never had to fly on my own before. I had everything on my person, so I didn't need to go to baggage claim. My original intention was to wander aimlessly through the airport for a few hours - maybe if they don't find me, they'll give up and go home - but I was found as soon as I stepped out of the gate. I was enthusiastically greeted by somebody with a toothy smile, who inquired if I was indeed "Eleanor". I guess I could have lied, but I'm almost sure that they could tell I was lying by how I taste or some other bullshit. Hunting you down seems to be one of their specialties.

Fuck, I hope that tea-guzzler doesn't find my office. I don't think I could do anything if she cornered me in here.

[4/7]
>>
After the introductions were over - I didn't bother to remember her name - she drove me out to the Officio and kept trying to make conversation, getting only short mumbles from me. I wasn't used to being awake at... Whatever time it was back home. I just got the spiel about being welcomed to Australia, and the Sixth, and Warmaster Russ and Incubator whatshisface send their regards even if they're too busy to meet with you, and things would mostly be the same. Except that they didn't have an office ready for me yet, so I had to work in a supply closet until then. After that I was given a room key for their on-site residence and had the rest of the day to get set up.

I had something that could be called a room now. It was small, but it was an actual room instead of a glorified storage space. And the landline didn't have a money slot, so I assumed it was complimentary. I fished the card out of Checkers' gift, and then dialed the number. I thought I might have to pay for long distance, but I was patched through just the same.

Turns out I got Checkers' cell phone number. The rest of my night was her asking if everything was okay, and that the presents were from all of them, and apologizing about that weasel, and reassuring me that things would be okay, and giving me all kinds of tips. Like how I had dental now. And how Australia doesn't have some of the candies I really liked back in America. And that if I needed anything I should call or leave a message. And that was all the time she had right now, good night.

Next day I had a map posted to my door that directed me to my new life. I managed to not get lost somehow, but I remember feeling nauseous the first time I stepped into that supply closet. It smelled really fucking awful, and I had a headache around lunchtime.

[5/7]
>>
I got surrounded by curious cats and nosy dogs, trying to ask me personal questions. The name "Crunchberry" was tossed around, and it seems to have stuck. That was my cue to get the fuck away from them, and I was chased all the way back to the "office". Sometimes they still show up and do it again, and I wish they'd just fuck off.

I got better at managing my money while here, and was able to save up enough to buy a video game console and a small television. When that didn't fill the void, I started buying candy every week. Checkers wasn't always available on weekdays, so we decided that specific times on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night would be the designated "only really good thing I have left to look forward to" period. I don't really consider her a friend even now. More like... I don't know, something else. Somebody to confide in and admire and wish you got to do normal things with.

Back then, I had mixed feelings about moving out here. Now, though... Now I'm really homesick.

Somebody's knocking at the door, so I guess that's enough reminiscing for one day. I hope the tea-guzzling bitch didn't find me.

"May I come in?" a polite voice inquires. I give an affirmative noise, and my afternoon workload is pushed in on a little trolley. I look at it with dread as the door shuts.

The trance kicking in doesn't do anything to cover the pain of writing with burns on your hand. Shit shit shit shit shit that hurts.

This feels like it's gonna be a slow loss of self. So I have to suffer through this fuckawful pain for a bit longer.

To summarize, my options now are to wait for Checkers and her friends to get me out of here, get into a different line of work, or turn into a witch. And Fuckface's antics are pushing me firmly into the third one. I can only hope nobody gets injured too badly when that happens.

Three Days – Part 2

Part 1: http://pastebin.com/0ZA0NTiE

Turning around to look back at her, the taxi driver glanced her over, then shrugged. “We're here. Are... you sure this is the place, lady? This is a kinda rough part of town, you know? Forgive me for saying, but you look a little young for this kinda work...”

Hino Setsuna gave him a flat stare with her one good eye, wondering just what she looked like in his eyes. A young girl, no more then 16 or 17, her otherwise pretty looks spoiled by her ruined face and hard, no nonsense attitude. Requesting to be dropped off at the docks, well away from where anyone her age had any real reason to be. Yakuza, maybe? Or a street walker, perhaps? “No, this is the place. No need to wait up for me.”

Leaning forward, she noted he looked older then she had first guessed. Did he have a daughter himself, waiting for daddy to get off his shift? Handing him the cash, she pushed the door open with her foot. Pausing, she glanced back, suddenly feeling the need to reassure him. “And thank you for your concern. I shall be fine.”

Stepping out onto the pier, she held her hand up, shielding her eyes from the slowly setting sun, long hair whipping in the cold breeze coming off the bay. Taking a deep breath, she walked toward Warehouse #0069, said to be the home of the Warmaster's personal arms dealer. The building looked the same as every other one on the various docks along the other piers all along the waterfront. Sure, the windows looked boarded up and the door reenforced, but the same could be said for all the other warehouses in the city. It wasn't the nicest place to be, as the driver had pointed out.

She paused a moment to look for a bell or intercom before finally giving up and knocking firmly twice. The sounded boomed into the building, echoing back toward her like the moan of the dead.
>>
>>32779135

She waited for wait felt like an eternity, pondering her options. If this didn't work, she'd have to find a black market dealer. She had some dealers planned outside of town, when she thought she'd be transferring to the Seventh, but now... now she was denied her planned contacts, her squadmates, even her personal equipment stored in her barracks locker. Despite being given the gift of time, she felt like she simply didn't have enough of it.

Normally, she wouldn't even consider going to another arms dealer; her usual girl in the Officio was more then sufficient to her needs. Even special orders and equipment arrived on time, every time, down to the minute quoted in the initial order. It had come up during heavy combat once or twice, even; A sudden supply crate being air dropped into their position, filled to the brim with weapons and fresh ammunition, had often been plenty enough to turn the tide.

She had heard stories, though, about Miss Misaka. A little maverick of a girl who had showed up one day out of the blue, connected with Kharn, the last Warmaster, somehow. Someone who blazed to the top alongside her equally brilliant brother, despite both of them not putting up with or paying much mind to Kyubei's wishes in the least. She was said to even be the Officio's best sniper, without being contracted or getting any real training from the Vindicare. She even-

With a clunk, her train of thought was jolted by the door creaking open on it's heavy hinges. A young girl, much younger then Setsuna herself, peered out, brown hair darkened by grease, eyes covered by a glowing goggle mask. “Who is this? Strange girl better have good reason for disturb Misaka.”

Sour Kraut, I want you to know that I love you and I always look forward to reading your posts. You brighten my day, please never leave.
>>
>>32779812
I'll leave when you've prised grammatical and vocabulary rules out of my cold dead haaaaands.
>>
>>32779811
well that's-
>spoilers
a bloo bloo bloooooooo!
>>
>>32779681

Ah, well, this is a bit easier. I'll exclude the main cast (Chiaki, Pinky, Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami) because I really love them.

5. Kharn
4. Kumatora
3. Midori
2. Rea
1. Wendy

Those are my choices!
>>
>>32779811
>Then they'll get worse.
You know this sort of thing really doesn't fit with the cutesy persona.
>>
>>32779845
>>32779812
Oh and another thing
>Strauss scowled as hard as she could, but remained speechless. Everything the woman had said was true, and she was far too pragmatic to try and deny it.
>Strauss' eyes grew hot and throat sore. For the first time since she was a little girl, Doctor Emma Strauss cried.
>kill an entire city no fucks given whatsoever because mad as fuck over getting voted out
>wah muh experiments I'll go cry now
>pragmatic
She's entirely off her rocker buddy.
>>
>>32779905

We need more Kuma and Rea time
>>
>>32779935
Strauss is terrible, that's why I just don't read Strauss related write-ups. Or any of Archivals write-ups.
>>
>>32779935
Perhaps she isn't quite as much of a soulless monster as you assume, Sour-kun.

Doesn't Hat go full murderhobo too sometimes? Maybe it's something in the water
>>
>>32779994
You don't read any of my writeups because of Strauss? But she's not even in the main series...
>>
>>32780022
Hat occasionally goes full murder-hobo in the quest votes, sure, but that's not the same as crafting the suffering.
>>
>>32780005
I'm sorry, when the fallout of your (entirely unnecessary) temper tantrums lays waste to entire cities you're firmly in the get fucked box.
Wait a second, now that I consider it, why isshe crying in the first place? SHE destroyed the city and Horzine, the other Meguca were just shipping away, she could have just kept running the city. She destroyed everything out of nothing but getting that last fuck you in against Fraken Fran.
>>
>>32780045
I don't read any of your write-ups because of your tone/style, Strauss is just the epitome of it.
>>
>>32780045
If anon can't take the cold, then they best get out of Canada, I guess?
>>
I believe Deculture has now gone to bed, and I know Cooldown left a few minutes ago, so... Questions?
>>
>>32780015
Now this is somewhat of a pointless question since its spoilery, but will future suffering be the comical terribleness of the current vein of suffering or in the 'everyone dies' style?

Actually, it'll be more comical terribleness with minimal dying for the most part.

>>32780164
In spite of rigorous testing, no such limit has been found yet.
>>
>>32780065
>she could have just kept running the city

Wat. You honestly think that after the whole debacle everyone would be content to later her keep going? The company would have crumbled, regardless. It's hard to maintain that sort of operation when you suddenly have zero funding.

There's a lot more to Strauss that I think you're not seeing simply because you've convinced yourself that she's nothing but an irredeemable monster. Which is a perfectly valid view point, but try not to be such a cunt about it, alright? I do value the criticism.

>>32780072
That's entirely fair. I try to be more grounded than Decu, Cooldown or some of the others, but I understand that isn't for everyone. Thank you for the feedback anyways!

Oh good, I was worried I would have to just stop reading them, I am enjoying them quite a lot right now, but I'm a bit of a pussy when it comes to that kind of thing.

I'll be truthful : I did entertain the idea of Eleanor succumbing to the stress and witching out after a crucial moment, but I felt bad about it. The current plotline wouldn't even figure that sort of thing into it.

To make up for it, here's smiling Eleanor.

I thought Horzine corrupted Varigan so much that they owned the very soil everyone was living on. They must turn a pretty penny with, you know, owning what amounts to their personal city and test subject reservoire. DoD contracts etc. "The officio" funding the op doesn't make much sense either, I thought Horzine WAS the op, where do the officio get their money from if not Horzine / the magic bag that so many writers like to use the words "the officio" for to summon up any plot contrivance they need?

And
>grounded
>an entier city the size of Detroit vanishes from the map
>lolololololol nobody knows
>grounded
Jesus Christ man. Refer to the magic bag point above.
>>
>>32780206
it helps a little.

>>32780201
I enjoy your writeups and I guess Strauss got her revenge or was it an empty victory?

>>32780237
>I'm a bit of a pussy when it comes to that kind of thing.
Me too bro, me too...
>>
>>32780201
>Thank you for the feedback anyways!
Eh, it's not much in the way of feedback, just "I don't like the things that you like", but thanks for being cool about it.
>>
>>32780206
Why is Midori overpowering / surprising / flustering Chiaki so goddamn good?

Is this gap-moe?
>>
>>32780361
Honestly, I'd love to argue this, but I'll point you back to the "try not to be such a cunt" part. You're just getting me angry and in no state to debate the finer points of Strauss' deposition.

>>32780367
Strauss got her last laugh, as much as she had to sacrifice to get it. Also, it gave the Maerorus a home to call their own, so I guess that's a plus. I'm hoping she'll get to reunite with Typhus'n'friends at some point in the distant future.

>>32780389
I'm just happy to get any response, really, as long as you're polite about it.

>"try not to be such a cunt"
Maybe you should try not to write such crap then. If you have to explain the motivations of your damn main character after the fact of telling the story you might have missed a few things too many the first time around.

It just all smacks too much of you having laid down a "this happens, and then that happens" storyline a long time ago and now everything, no matter what, is being bent and twisted to make it possible to nail it down according to the plan, no matter how many tricks and excuses of crazy size have to be pulled out of the checkered top hat.
>>
>>32780683
To be fair, it's a fucking fabulous hat.
>>
>>32780573
These things you do to my heart cannot be healthy.
>>
>>32780572
not >>32780361 here, the whole "entire city disappears off the map with no one finding out" part really does stretch belief the slightest bit. Like, with how much of a hellhole it was, you think it'd be in the news a lot beforehand. Even if the news somehow was totally shut down and didn't say a thing about Varrigan, you know, people would think, "oh, why did they suddenly stop talking about Varrigan?" It'd make more sense to pass it off as a less fantastic disaster, like, maybe a nuclear reactor went wrong, or some radical anarchists somehow got ahold of a nuke, or maybe it was a sudden earthquake, or maybe Ork spies.

I do like the Ballad of the Seventeenth, though.
>>
>>32780683
While I think that Archival's being a bit thin-skinned about this (how he's survived 4chan, I don't know), but you really could afford to be a bit less douchey about it as well.
