You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Last Thread: You are the knight, Talon York, and you are an emperor, but not the emperor… yet. Last thread you cleared a dangerous dungeon.

Rolls are d20 and the best of the first three posters. I may sometimes ask for more dice to be rolled by each player, but same rules apply otherwise. Please quote the post you are voting for or rolling against. Note there are hard-to-replace points that can be used to offset failures in rolls. >You have 0 FR points

“You got through all of that quicker than I thought,” comes Raita’s voice from next to you and you spin around to see her sitting on a nearby railing. “I wondered if this was your target.”

There’s a slight thrum of power in your ears, as though the stone and steel around you shudders in resonance to the power in that gigantic metal box standing in the centre of the room. You stand on the walkway around it, Raita next to you and your comrades fanning out behind you. The room crackles with barely contained magic, the residual energies from the PoP and you see that the stone walls and flooring of this room is covered with a thin layer of silver crystal. The walkways appear to be built to avoid walking on it, you guess.

Raita smiles at you, her six golden tails swishing around behind her freely. She doesn’t appear to be hostile but it’s too early to judge. The fact that she’s down here at all and appears to be aware of your actions is alarming enough.

“Is this what you meant by ‘somewhere else’?” you say cautiously, recalling her last words when you left her store.

Raita tilts her head and her smile shifts mysteriously. “No, not really,” she says and you blink. “I’d actually hoped you might pay me a midnight visit. My little love potion didn’t work but I at least thought you had been charmed enough by me to come back for some fun.”

Giving you a disappointed look, Raita has the edges of a pout on her face. You’re not focusing too well as you realise the real reason she was behaving oddly in her private room. You block out the faint snickers of Vad and Mal behind you and try to focus.

Vad beats you to the punch though, asking, “A love potion? First you’re cooking and now you create useless fancies. Given how long it takes us foxes to learn new tricks, shouldn’t you actually focus on learning useful things?”

“I have more than enough time to learn everything necessary and then some,” Raita replies imperiously. “After all, I’m far older than you, Vadoric.”

There’s a slight pause as Raita eyes everybody with an odd look in her eyes, expecting some sort of reaction to something she said. It never comes, apart from Vad crossing his arms with a slight scowl.

“Yeah, yeah, so you have a century or two on me,” he says, and Raita gives everybody a disappointed look as she realises nobody is reacting to what she wanted. “If you waste it on learning useless crap it makes no difference.”

Instead of responding, Raita simply gives you a glower. Her tails seem to hang around her in a slightly despondent fashion and she clearly wants you to ask her something about her previous statement. As a particularly strong burst of power runs through the room, the runes on the Place of Power lighting up and sparking brightly, you wonder if the meeting here was planned. There’s a sense of theatre to this meeting, even if it appears to have collapsed under the weight of reality.

Still glowering at you, Raita flicks her eyes over Vad before returning her gaze to you. Your comrades are waiting for either you or her to say or do something, given the atmosphere right now.

>1.

Deciding not to play along with the growing silliness, you cut straight to the chase.

“You might as well drop the illusion,” you say. “That will make things go more smoothly. And quickly.”

Scowling at you, Raita gives a very loud harrumph. “Fine,” she whines. “I’ll show you all my tails. I thought you might be more fun.”

With that, she hops down from the railing and her tails weave for a second. In that second her entire figure appears to blur and you feel the usual warping sensation you get from foxes for the first time from her. You feel a strange draw in your chest, as though something is tugging on your very being. Then you shut it out, making use of Tsucchi’s training to guard your power. The sensation of a link between you and Raita remains, however. Like a faint grip on your heart.

Standing in front of you is now a nine-tailed fox, who you know to be Taira from what you’ve heard. She’s slightly shorter and less full-bodied now, possessing a figure that reminds you of Sala, with some actual body fat instead of lean muscle. Her nine golden tails swish around behind her as she glowers at you again.

“You are Taira, as I suspect-” you begin to say before you’re cut off by Vad’s strangled scream.

You tense, worried that Taira or some other monster has sprung but all that happens is Vad pushing you back and taking a stance in front of you. At least, you think that’s what happened – the enormous black fluffy tails fanned out right in front of your face make it hard to see.

“You!” he shouts in some strange mix of outrage and surprise. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m on holiday,” Taira says simply, her voice slightly higher in tone now but laced with far more mischief. It’s a very practiced voice, you feel.

“Vad, please get out of my way,” you say.

“No, it’s for your own safety. She’s way too much like you and Ren,” he says, confusing you.

“I never knew you were interested in men, Vadoric,” Taira says, her voice teasing and you can almost hear Vad gnashing his teeth. “But introductions are necessary – I am Taira, the only nine-tailed fox and the former head of the Six-Star Alliance. Or is it Five-Star? I haven’t followed the politics much since I left.”

“It’s still called the Six-Star,” you say, trying to push Vad out of the way without hurting him without much success. “And it’s not important right now. What’s your claim on the Place of Power, Taira?”

“It’s mine,” she says. “If you want it you’ll need to give me a reason to let you claim it. You’re interesting enough so I know you’ll be able to give me reason enough.”

Vad is still steadfastly remaining in front of you, even after you grab one of his tails, but Taira puts enough emotion into her voice to make determining her intentions easy. She’s bored and wants you to entertain her in some way – clearly her holiday as a baker has run its course. If she does want you to claim it then maybe she’ll give you some more hints.

>You need to determine how you will get Taira to hand over the PoP. This could be by force if you’re willing to try.

Feel free to ask her questions as you formulate your offer. Once you finalise the offer (which may involve a vote) then she’ll give you a response and you can potentially try again.

Well don't we have some delicious conquering planned? Doesn't she like conquering? Intrigue?!

"Don't you like imperial conquering?"
>>
>>32783417
Lifting Vad back the collar at the back of his shirt off his feet may work better.

She is bored, and wants something interesting.
Plus, she has been out of the loop for a long time.

Stating the situation about the fox clans and asking her what it is she is after would probably work to get her to open up.
>>
>>32783417
What sort of thing is she thinking of doing next? We could always try conquering our way into possession of some sea side property and hire her on as a privateer for a bit.

I mean pastery chef to pirate that's the logical jump right?
>>
>>32783510
We already have seaside property.
>>
>>32783417

Trying to think of what she would find interesting.

She clearly finds politics boring for the most part.

We could talk about how she could tag along for our conquests and adventure sheninagans.

Talk about the followers we collected, elementals, foxes, half-dragons.

Things will certainly be more interesting for her if she comes with us rather than staying as a baker in a stagnating city like Ahm.
>>

I'm pretty sure maximum trolling would be us challenging her to see who can aquire the best harem of powerful people in two years. We'd exclude all members of our current ones of course just to equalise it.

"Taira, why is Vad acting like you are some sort of ancient evil I must be protected from?" you ask her from behind the wall of fluffy tails.

"Because she is an ancient evil," Vad growls.

"He's just worried you might run off with me instead of staying with him," she says.

"Generally, women run off with me," you say.

"I guess that's something we have in common. I mean, I already stole Vad once. It's how he got involved in the central court and with Ren," she says. "Your elf is very cute. Where did you find him?"

You don't answer that. It feels dangerous.

>>32783480
"Mmm, conquering sounds kind of boring," she says bluntly. "I already did a bit of that. I do like the sound of the imperial part - are imperial kitchens really big and fancy? I can't really afford a big one here."

"Shouldn't you be rich, given you're one thousand years old?" you ask.

"I run a small bakery in the back-streets of Ahm. It doesn't do too well," she says.

>>32783482
"The foxes don't really concern me. I left them behind for good reason," she says.

"You mean you flounced out of the alliance after Ren refused to marry you," Vad says under his breath and you catch a minor exchange of power between them and it crackles in the air for a moment.

>>32783533
"I have some very interesting companions, as you can see, and there's bound to be plenty more," you say. "Naturally, the sorts of things we do are very interesting. Don't you wonder about what that might be like?"

“It’s a girl, Taira,” you say in a deadpan voice. “I would think you can recognise one.”

Before Taira can respond, Vad shifts position so he’s standing equidistant between you and Lynn. You’d swear he thought she was going to jump one of you – or maybe that’s what he is worried about. Taira notes the move and lets a wicked grin shift onto her face.

“Oh, Vadoric,” she says sweetly and you see his tails stand on end in response. “You do remember the situation I and Ren parted under? We maintain very close contact and you owe him your allegiance. Why don’t you tell me so that I can tell him?”

“I can tell him myself if he asks,” Vad says slowly, his expression guarded.

“Hold on,” you say, but Taira speaks over the top of you.

“If I ask you on his behalf, it’s the same as him asking you,” she says, narrowing her eyes. “I am still the eldest of the mystic foxes and sworn to protect our race. Do you not owe our race your allegiance?”

You can tell that’s a sore spot, as Vad winces and his expression becomes stiff for a moment. Several moments pass and you can tell Vad is debating heavily internally what to do. The history between these two is strong and you doubt you can do much besides rely on Vadoric’s own judgement.

“No, I won’t tell you,” he says, straightening up and returning her gaze strongly. “I owe Talon my allegiance as much as all foxes. I won’t betray his or Caitlyn’s trust where it doesn’t affect our race.”

Taira is shocked and gives you a surprised look. “Um, you’re not actually sleeping with him, right? Because you’ve really done a good job on him.”

You open your mouth to give a glib reply but she waves you off with a slight expression of wonder.

“Consider the question answered and part of whatever deal you offer,” she says. “I’ll make sure you don’t leave empty-handed at the very least. It’s good to see my old flame looked after.”

You raise an eyebrow as Vad blushes as Taira’s response. How strange, you think. Still, the reminder of a deal puts your mind back on track – you still need to get that PoP.

“Why do I get the feeling this is the most interesting thing to happen to you since you left the alliance?” you ask rhetorically.

Taira gives you an odd look, frowning at the suggestion that her life has been boring. You push on despite the fact that mocking her is a very obvious danger zone.

“I mean, you’re an ancient mystic fox,” you say. “You apparently are so old you know things about the mystic foxes that the next most powerful fox dreams of knowing. You are pretty, charming and powerful. You led your race for centuries.”

Puffing up with pride, it’s obvious Taira isn’t sensing what you plan to say next. You’re not flattering her, you’re fattening her up to butcher her. At least her taking the bait makes the next part easier.

“And now you sit around in a rundown store in the backstreets of Ahm, selling amazing baked goods that use so little of your talent it’s almost embarrassing,” you say, voice turning sharp. “An old lover of yours chooses his lord over you, despite the wealth of power and charm you should have. You have money troubles and can’t get out of them easily.

“You completely lack creativity, Taira,” you say, plunging the knife in as she stares at you in a mixture of horror and surprise. “You’re terrible. So many things you could do and you sit around and annoy travellers. You even refused my offer earlier even as you beg me indirectly now.”

She stares at you, tails wilting as your words strike at her. You need to push this just a tiny bit further without pushing her over the edge. You also need to reel her in and try to convince her to help you, rather than just stand aside and let you take the PoP.

“You clearly knew what excitement was in the past, Taira,” you say. “You brought Vad back to Pharos. United and governed your race. You once knew what it meant to change the world. You once knew the excitement of that.

“Now you squander all of your potential,” you continue, injecting as much passion into your voice as possible as your words echo around the chamber. “Your presence in this world is so minor since you left the alliance that not even footprints remain in the sand you trod on. I abhor this, if not you. I impact the world by being and do it deliberately and to the best of my ability. I build, rather than abide. You are stagnant but you were not always so. I can see that old spark within you still.”

You pause for a moment, letting the words sink in. Taira is meeting your gaze steadily, her ears and tails holding still as she listens attentively. You’re striking at a chord within her. You wonder, briefly, what caused her to cease what was likely a once-relentless drive. Would you have to worry one day about the same?

“You can join me, and my comrades, as we shape the world. You have the potential to create so much more,” you say, dropping your voice so that you’re almost whispering. Power thrums throughout the room once more, nearly drowning out your next words but you see her straining to her you.

“If you are as unambitious as you appear now, and you wish to remain as such then at least step aside and do not let your own lack of drive impede mine,” you say. “But if you truly desire what you once lost, then join me. Not just as a chef or a lover, but as a comrade and friend.”

There’s a long silence. The runes light up on the Place of Power once more and for several long moments there is little beyond the majestic sight and sound of it. Then, you get your response.

“I-I am not unambitious!” Taira shouts at you, eyes tearing up at the edges. “I am the oldest and most powerful fox there has ever been. I’m not stagnant – I’m just taking a break. And I’ll show you! I’ll beat all the others you’ve attracted to you. This conquest of yours? I’ll show you how you really do conquest and then I’ll have you apologise to me.”

For a moment you thought she was challenging you, then you realise she’s just being haughty in her acceptance of your offer. You shake your head slightly in exasperation. You can claim the PoP now, but what will you claim it for?

>I’m going to pause for a moment for you guys to discuss what you’ll claim the PoP for.

You can either bind the PoP to yourselves, giving you the godlike domain in Harrowmont (with all the limits discussed and in the Q&A bin), or you can bind it to Undine and make her more powerful. You could also leave it alone and attempt to claim it later for something else.

UNDINE'S NEW CHAR SHEET
Greentexted lines have been changed.

Personality: Well-mannered and pleasant
Sub-personality: Jealous

>Resistance [5]
Charisma [1]

SKILLS

Martial Arts I – proficiency in a variety of martial arts and in combining them.
Battlefield Basics I – proficiency in all general battlefield skills (dodging, blocking etc).
Sorcery (Water Element) III – ability to use complex water sorceries. Undine is exceptionally skilled even if her power is currently limited.
Knowledge (Sorcerous) III – extensive knowledge of sorcery and sorcerous magicks.

Empower Self I - you use magic to increase your physical attributes by one point for one hour.

>>
>>32785721
It's not really about 'morality', it's about having a stable government going forward.

Imperial Monarchy is basically you get one bad heir and everything goes to shit.
>>
>>32785663

>>32785663
I think Talon will be a good dad. kids will probably be finn type characters at least in relationship to Talon

>>
>>32785721
That's why I'm backing meritocracy, Talon clawed his way up from the peasantry on pure personal power, he can appreciate that form of governance.
Besides, the demi-Talons will have no small amount of power themselves, which would stand them in good stead to climb the ranks.
>>
>>32785747
>Imperial Monarchy is basically you get one bad heir and everything goes to shit.
Not really. It usually requires several bad hiers actually.
>>
>>32785703
Sure you do you can only learn so much before everything becomes "Oh, As I guessed." The more you discover the harder shit gets to discover more and the more crazy things have to get for interesting things. Not like a good thing or anything but in the long term stagnation is pretty much certain to happen sometimes once a few centuries start passing. Just takes something interesting to snap you out of it.
>>
>>32785784
I prefer a combination of meritocracy and inherited positions. That is, there is substantial turnover amongst the nobility.
>>
>>32785747
>>32785750

As a point too, representation makes people happy. Keeping local customs makes people happy.

A senatorial council would probably help us during rule, and preserve imperial unity should we die, provided we set out the standard for provincial inter-cooperation.
>>
>>32785785
Pretty much this it's mainly harems that are unstable as shit. Which luckily-oh wait. Unless everyone got something out of it.
>>
>>32785810
That's demonstrably untrue. You'd probably have to know everything perfectly. That likely takes more than "a few centuries".

Really, this "life gets boring" cliche is just a shitty cliche from authors who themselves had boring lives.
>>
Personally i back having a constitutional monarchy.
Then have the heirs assigned tutors from each house.
Royal tutors, tutors from the nobles, and tutors who are chosen to teach them from the common man.
So each has a say in the education of the heir.

Then its a case of monkeying around with the succession rules so they have to compete for it, all the while the normal government gets on with day to day ruling.
>>
>>32785845
>Pretty much this it's mainly harems that are unstable as shit
Not really. Its unstable when there are many competing claims for the throne. Which can happen in harems, and outside of them. After all, plenty of Chinese emperors had multiple wives, and we all know how unstable that society was
>>
>>32785872
Even tutors don't protect you from dicks.

It needs checks and balances. Even aside from modern notions of being nice to be, that's perhaps just flatly the most stable long term government.

>Claim PoP for Undine

As Undine prepares the ritual to claim the PoP she asks you, “Are you certain, Talon? You could claim this for yourself, instead.”

“I’m certain, Undine,” you say, giving her a smile. “Having my Champion be able to use more of her own power matters more than being able to play God in a castle.”

Undine nods, but her expression indicates she’s not going to hold you to that. She doesn’t seem that convinced. The ritual is as short as you remember it being last time and you trek back to where Corrfax is, with Taira in tow.

“You know, I’m your superior now,” Taira says to Vad in a mischievous tone.

“Wouldn’t it be the other way around?” Vad says dryly. He had simply stared at you in disbelief after Taira swore allegiance to you earlier. Some things are hard to comprehend even for those who are one-hundred and ninety years old. Or eight-hundred in the case of Gnome, who had been similarly flabbergasted.

“Talon,” Taira sings out to you, “I’m in charge of Vad, right?”

“Sure,” you respond. “You just have to compete with his girlfriend

Taira begins to badger Vad, who she treats as something between a child and an old lover, when you enter the room where Corrfax remains.

“Ah, so you do return,” the metal chimera says as you enter. “And with one more in tow.”

There’s a round of introductions and some discussion. The real issue is how to get Corrfax out of the labyrinth and back to Harrowmont.

“I can just teleport him,” she says. “Then I can jump back and pack up my things.”

“It’s a fair distance,” you say. “And you’ve never been there.”

“It won’t be a problem,” she says.

>Any problems with just having Taira port Corrfax, the metal chimera you recruited last session, back to Harrowmont?

The only problem I can see with that is the fact that our soldiers there will witness an unidentified fox lady teleport into the castle with a gigantic goddamn metal chimera in tow walking straight towards the extremely powerful Source that they're supposed to be guarding.

We should probably use sending to warn them that that's going to happen.

There is only so much you can do anon. It's even worse if you don't have perfect memories because in that case there is no way in hell you are remembering something from 5 centuries ago. Infinite progress just doesn't happen that easily as much as people wish it did there has to be a break at some point. Though personally after so long I would probably just start fucking with people in that situation. There's no way you can possibly personally claim "there's only so much you can do" without you personally having seen it all. The data of possibility is quite present.

Same here. The face of our empire is aristocratic, but the machinery behind it is meritocratic. They need each other to function, as the nobles are bred to lead and take responsibility, while the bureaucracy draws from the educated and wealthy middle classes.

The process starts with it being in the blood, but if, through whatever machinery we come up with, somebody is declared not competent enough for their job, they're sacked and replaced with whoever's best qualified. They then become the new bloodline, and the cycle starts again. It encourages nobles to stay on top of their game and not get complacent, which can only be good in the long haul.
>>
>>32786231
Thank Merce for the look at the archmage before we go.

>>32786250
1000+ year old fox dude. We have someone older then fucking Gnome and powerful enough to fight Merce one on one.
>>
>>32786452
>They need each other to function,
You see, there's a reason it tends not to work out that way in real life.

Aristocrats are accorded non-merit power, carried in their social ostentation. That makes it very easy for them to usurp positions, especially as far as their mystique with the populace goes.

It's just not a competent war machine, since aristocrats never truly have to prove themselves.
>>
>>32786452

Disagree with bred to lead. You can't just train a leader absent other abilities.

You take individuals who show promise and talent and then groom them for leadership. You can't tell who's talented just because of the circumstances of their birth.

If a noble happens to be capable, then he should be selected for leadership. If a common happens to be capable, then he should be selected for leadership instead.

Talon would likely embrace this idea in the long run considering his background as commoner.
>>
>>32786503
>somebody is declared not competent enough for their job
See, you guys are confusing Republic representation mechanics for aristocratic holdings.

Unless there's an actual peer-voting system in place, "declaring someone incompetent" means "beginning a civil war or family feud or war of assassins".
>>
>>32786612
The british army got around this by having leadership roles require time spent in previous ranks before being able to get them.
>>
>>32786612
Exactly. Has to be open to everyone to make sure we get the actual best.
Any bloodline shit in this case honestly just gives people an excuse to be lazy and pretentious.
>>
>>32786502
>This would gradually make the nobles an obsolete class so I support it
Over three generations or so, yes.

It would be similar to Europe in the 18th century, where strong centralized states still had medieval 'knights' as aristocratic military officers. However, as wealth creation changes from land cultivation to trade/industry, the landed nobility will fall behind the nobles in wealth. Then, they will demand access to the ranks of the nobility in exchange for money, buying the titles of bankrupt Lords and Ladies. Eventually the distinction will become entirely ceremonial - but that's not the society we have now. I

t's too unstable to create right away, the peasantry needs the continued existence of the nobility to demonstrate tradition and normalcy.
>>
>>32786616
I'm not saying that the people get to decide they're incompetent. That's a stupid idea. It's all in the bureaucracy and the Emperor. It would also be a useful way of using that inquisition/auditor thing, if we decided it.
>>
Personally I'm just looking for an excuse to purge the Vitrian nobles who look down on us.

If they rebel, that would be a perfect opportunity to replace them with those who would be more amendable to us.
>>

WW1 says that the British Army didn't get around this at all, only reduce the problem.

With the exception that magical might and other qualities tend to be inherited (an absurd % of the nobility have magical bloodlines vs the rest of the population), which will give the nobility far more staying power.

WW1 was more a war were no one really understood the advances in technology on the battlefield than a comprehensive failure of leadership.

well, for the first three over the top charges, the rest was sheer stupidity.

But before WW1 the british army was considerd one of the stronger sides. And thats the system they used to keep the nobles in check from being totally incompetent.
>>
>>32786695
No. Bad despot. Don't go purging people who don't like you unless they've put actions to their words. Convince them to our side, or give them enough rope to hang themselves on treason accounts. If we go purging people we don't like, we're no better than a banana republic.
>>
>>32786659

Automatic promotions after slumming with previous ranks is just as bad.

You shouldn't be promoted because of your family name in a meritocracy. You should be promoted because you've proven youself capable.

If the nobles are capable after spending time in previous ranks, yeah sure promote them. Otherwise drum their ass out.
>>
>>32786731
Or you know a pretty average king who doesn't want to die in his sleep after the same people rebel a dozen times.

I suspect they will rebel at some point or another though. Especially if we absorb the merchant-republic peacefully.

Really, the only way to deal with all the shitty nobility intrigues is pure representational meritocracy.

If they've got a magical bloodline, they can keep breeding for that on their own, and demonstrate the merit of it.

We're not precluding personal or family wealth and holdings. Only that they gain political power just for stating their name. It's pretty much always been a bad policy.
>>
>>32786769

Surely, you can see how that might be construed as borderline automatic if the nobles belonged to the monied class?

Back. Writing up next post.

For those wondering, I'll be posting Taira's char sheet at the end. I'm not sure how long this thread will go for. I want to close off Ahm at least. That may mean the thread will be a bit shorter than normal (7 hours or so total, rather than the usual 8-9) as I've been distracted by a few other things.

>>32786320
I'll probably have the party do some things off-screen.

>>32786295
I'll do a quick trip to the Tower of the Moon's shops.

>>32786287

Visiting mage towers that aren't Alyce's isn't a great idea - it could cause issues and maybe some paranoia on her part. Trying to poach her mages might freak her out a bit given she's promised to send them to you after you sign an agreement.

>>32786250
>Aspirational how much prestige does it give us to have Taira swear alleginance to us?
Loads. The Six-Star Alliance are going to be very interested.

>And what's the level of her obedience? Does her loyalty to us trump her loyalty to the foxes, at least nominally?
Her loyalty to you is personal, rather than professional. Basically, keep her happy and she won't have any problems. As for her race, well, that could be complicated.
>>
>>32786755
Again, hang themselves on treason. All it takes is one fuckup, and they're out. But we need proof first. If we go ousting any person who whines about us, it reduces the legitimacy of our rule and the rule of our successors.

>>32786761

Yeah, there's trouble brewing there. I don't know whether we should try and appease them or push them over the edge so we won't have to worry about them being a powder keg later down the road.
>>
>>32786802
>Only that they gain political power just for stating their name. It's pretty much always been a bad policy.
Now this is a fundamental misunderstanding of history.
>>
>>32786769
I've seen enough Sharpe to know the problem with bought officers, earned only.

I imagine the nobles would still have an advantage in getting there, due to a mixture of family wealth to get them good tutors and their magically powerful bloodlines.
>>
>>32786721
>With the exception that magical might and other qualities tend to be inherited (an absurd % of the nobility have magical bloodlines vs the rest of the population), which will give the nobility far more staying power.
Fair point, I overlooked that.

With that in mind, the non-magical nobility (or the incompetent ones who slander their inherited money and estates), would likely be weeded out over a few generations; while the competent and magical families cling to power.

Hopefully technological development can bridge the power gap between magical and non-magical citizenry. But then again, these are problems for roughly 50/100 years down the line, not now.

At the end of the day, if we wee to void nobility now in favour of a meritocracy, I doubt it would work. The nobles have the majority of the land and money, they tend to have personal military forces, they represent stability to the presents and I'm not sure if our pan-imperial middle class is strong or large enough to take their position - yet. So we go with the imperfect, hybrid model.
>>
>>32786814

We just need to be sure that we retain the loyalties of the Knight Orders, Vitrian Mages, and the common people.

Sarah's house would obviously be on our side.

Any rebellion would be doomed if we have all the real powers on our side.
>>
>>32786802

having power just for stating their name is completely misrepresenting the power of aristocracy. The whole point of bloodlines ruling countries is because they've been educated on what needs to be done and know how to do it. A dirt-farmer isn't going to know how to run macroeconomics or how to make sure they don't push the austrians out of that sweet trade deal they want set up. Bad personalities may ruin things every once in a while, but that's why you force them into humbling situations like slumming it with the peasants.
>>
>>32786833
It certainly isn't. Names, houses, and the respective breeding trees were very important historically. They did grant power just by stating them, especially in the eyes of a commoner.

It's shit. Even the Romans didn't use it (much). But in the middle ages, your House was actually a ticket to free respect.

Honestly, we should just use the Roman system of republic with named successors, potentially merit-vetoable.
>>
>>32786810
Funds the war effort, and the noble can be put under someone else's supervision and then demoted when they do something stupid.

The point is, if they have to spend time in the lower rank each time they buy up, they have to scrub in with everyone else, so they at least have some idea what they are doing rather than coming in from nothing. It also keeps the nobles happy.
>>
>>32786896
>It's shit. Even the Romans didn't use it (much). But in the middle ages, your House was actually a ticket to free respect.
And you're overlooking that that system kept countries more or less stable for long periods of time. The family ties and promises of inheritance were the glue that held society together.
>>
>>32786893
Bloodlines were according a sort of quasi-mystical respect during the middle ages. It's ironic, because that's perhaps the very reason for the "magical bloodline" fantasy cliche now.
You would actually gain political and command power just by displaying your House and Coat of Arms, regardless of your actual education.

Aristocracies TRIED to maintain good education, but other systems do that much fucking better. See: Renaissance onward.
>>
>>32786864
That's why the Nobles would bring in serious Mercenary companies. They have the money for it, being merchant nobles and all. Plus, we also need to worry about collateral damage. saying 'we'd win because we have da powa' completely ignores if the peasants say 'fuck it' and go Tienanmen square. We don't want to kill off our workforce.
>>
>>32786991
Simply because a system works does not mean it works as well as the alternatives.
>>
>>32786907

I'm fairly sure that I would prefer having my generals and ranking officers to have gotten there through their own merits rather than questionables who might fuck up at critical moments.

The money's probably not worth it here.
>>
>>32786991
Let me put it to you this way:

The military, political, and technological might of the middle ages were behind Rome by a massive degree. It's called the "dark ages" for a reason.

The Roman Army could actually defeat most of the knightly orders with ease, and even Roman medical technology was superior until World War 1. It's fucking hilarious when you examine historical military and governance.

You're basically saying "duct tape technically holds steel together instead of welding". Sure. Welding is usually better.
>>
>>32786896
>It's shit. Even the Romans didn't use it (much). But in the middle ages, your House was actually a ticket to free respect.
Being a member if the Roman patrician class was exactly the same.

Rome wasn't a meritocracy. It was an aristocratic oligarchy during the Republic. While you may enter the nobility with wealth, a shorter noble family history was heavily looked down on.
>>
>>32787063
Yeah. But in a vast empire were not going to have the luxury to vet everyone, and the nobles will supply the troops, so they will demand the right to lead them. Fact is, this system only came about due to the nature of a fractured domain into many pieces over a vast area.
>>

>>

Wasn't the renaissance the exact aristo-meritocracy we're discussing here? I'm not entirely certain if you're actually endorsing my point or not.
>>
>>32787088
Wut. The high middle ages where massively more advanced then Rome. It's just no one had the resources Rome did to pay for all the shit they did.
>>
>>32787092
That is actually untrue. It was an appointment thing. You could be a patrician and still no one would care for you. They were more cohesive at citizens for a unified imperium, and considered service and skill to be more worthy than blood.

In essence, it did not matter if you were a senator's son per se: only that you were recognized favorably.
>>
>>32787088
>The Roman Army could actually defeat most of the knightly orders with ease,
Well, yes. Because they had a much larger standing army, due to being a much larger state. Now ask yourself a question, why did the eastern roman empire abandon the the legionary system eventually and adopt a system closer to that of the western Europeans.
>>
>>32787180
>5000 guys using swords that are 1000 years out of date and lightly armored.

Yeah assuming a equal sized army the metallurgy and the war horses of the middle ages would dominate.
>>
>>32786855
>Fair point, I overlooked that.
The other thing you overlooked is that manufacturing REQUIRES substantial magical ability in this setting, which again ties into the mage nobility. The nobility won't be kicked out by the new rich because to a large degree they are required to participate in manufacturing for it to work. With ALL the mages becoming nobility in our empire, this trend will only be reinforced.
>>
>>32787157
It is even the case in armies of equal size, since the Romans were a trained and tactical standing army, rather than disparate fractious levies with poor tactics and cohesion.

>>32787180
The East was not Rome. It's probably not pointful to type out all the political bullshit they had to lose the former military strength. Suffice it to say, they were perhaps fractious aristocrats rather than united imperials.
>>
>>32787169
>imperium
An excellent roman concept! The favour of the gods grants the ability to give orders and command others.

If we're looking for an alternative to divine bloodlines for our heirs, this may be it. Replace Rome with Harrowmont and state that ownership of the castle and good governance of it is a display of divine favour - granting the leader of Harrowmont imperium. With this power, the leader can legitimately rule the empire and subjugate others.
>>
>>32787277
That had to be tricked into following orders half the time. The roman version of discipline was "Stand still and don't charge like an idiot into the foes front line."

You provide Taira with a token that bears your griffon seal and magical signature – that way your mages will at least give her a glance before trying to blow her up. Maloric fires off a sending to both Harrowmont and Alyce, and you leave explicit instructions for Taira to wait for a half-hour before teleporting. The sending might take a while to filter through your troops and you don’t want to return to Harrowmont to find that your own soldiers blew half of it up.

It’s well past dawn when you come back up the passageway leading into the Tower of Stars and you run into a pair of unfamiliar faces guarding it. A pair of women, each with swords at their hips and wearing a plate breastplate with magically reinforced clothing. You slow for a second, their stances worrying you that they may attack, but then relax when one greets you.

“Ho, Imperator,” sings out the right-hand woman, a brunette with a ponytail. “General Mercenie said you wouldn’t be back before dusk and yet here you are. You’re a reliable man to bet on.”

“You’re betting on me, are you?” you ask as you approach them. Your eyes narrow slightly as you recognise her – the spellblade, Rayza Staarn, if you haven’t missed your mark. She nearly killed you a few years ago. A mage who isn’t quite a mage, the Ahmnian towers like to take on talented soldiers with magical talent and make them into killing machines just a step below a combat magister.

“I made the mistake of betting against you in Farlou, a couple of years back, and nearly lost my head,” she says, giving you an easy smile. “The labyrinth? Hardly trouble for you.”

So, it's the actioning of rule that grants the right to rule. If they get a civil war and lose, then they clearly had lost the divine right to rule.

Isn't this how the chinese emperors worked? I recall something like that, and they didn't have many probems while there were strong bloodlines.

You greet her properly and are introduced to her companion, a woman almost as tall as Gnome with pale skin and short black hair, done up in a short spiky ponytail.

“I am Moonblade,” she says and you recognise a Pharos accent. Vad tenses up at the name and gives her a wild stare to which she raises her palms in a peaceful gesture. “I have no quarrel with you, fox. My allegiances to the Empress are suspended for the duration of my stay with the Tower of Stars.”

You frown at that. That sounded like she was a notable warrior from Pharos. You wonder how ‘suspension of allegiance’ works in reality as you bid them farewell and head out of the tower, leaving them to guard the entrance behind you. Presumably Merce or Alyce will need to return and seal it properly later.

It is early morning and shops are probably beginning to open now. Your companions have some things they want to take care of, too. You…

I was assuming that non-magical methods of production would eventually be developed to utilize the greater non-magical labour pool in increasing the productive capacity of society. The RSK is the most likely candidate for this innovation, long wars tend to spur unorthodox innovation.

If it doesn't happen though, the Mage nobility will be strong indeed. As they are required, as you say, for bit only manufacturing but a whole host of other important imperial duties - I don't think they'd like us taking their noble stats away.

Even if we did abolish nobility formally, there would still be an informal Mage/ non-Mage prestige and power divide in society. Anew aristocracy would simply develop without technological progress bridging the gap.

You are sorely misinformed of The East's politics. Their origin does not matter, nor their succession. The discussion is of their culture, and were you familiar with it you would realize that it is almost completely disparate from The West.

Justinian unified a front of reconquest, but as it goes The East's lack of internal cohesion overall prevented centralized military structuring and forced increased reliance on mercenaries and perhaps imports from Northern Europe.

Their own troops were simply not loyal enough.

But that is perhaps enough history lesson, there is yet a Quest on.

Caitlyn and Finn trail behind you, chatting about what they would like in terms of equipment. You’re pretty sure the toys they want are both expensive and custom-make. Still, you’ve got money and they’ll be worth it – if the tower will sell them to you.

“Ah, Imperator Talon,” greets the clerk in central arms and armour store. He’s an older looking magister and the markings on his robes indicate that he’s an enchanter. “The Archmage indicated you might come here. I’ve been instructed to sell you any items you wish or take down any orders you wish to make, so long as you pay the full price.”

“You sound like that’s special,” you say, raising any eyebrow.

“Even in times of peace custom-made weapons and armour would be limited to close allies of the tower. I’m going to take this as a positive sign,” he says, with a slightly strained smile.

You explain the particular needs of your equipment and he nods sympathetically. “It would take approximately four weeks per suit of armour, if you want it to the standard of your armour. Or close, really, as I’m not sure whether I could reproduce anything quite like it - we lost our best armorer a year ago to an assassin and it was always a hobby for me before.”

>The discussion is of their culture, and were you familiar with it you would realize that it is almost completely disparate from The West.
Incorrect. It was a gradual evolution. True, it was vastly different several centuries later, but what society doesn't mutate beyond recognition in that time. Also, the point isn't culture. The point is that they had Legions, and they DIDN'T abandon the equipment and tactics of the roman legions because they forgot how to use them. They abandoned them because they stopped working, due among other things to vastly improved metallurgy, the invention of the stirup making heavy cavalierly possible, and improvements in missile weaponry such as crossbows and longbows.

“There aren’t any other enchanters capable of producing magical armour?” you ask, sounding dubious.

“Plenty, particularly in the Tower of the Moon, but hand-enchanting armour is a lost talent. Magitech is just too efficient at it and the only specialised demand comes from warriors such as yourself. The rest want more ordinary custom-armour and the spellblades here eschew armour in general,” he says.

You watch Finn and Caitlyn test out some of the weapons in the store as you debate costs and timing. The armour is expensive – full price for a set of custom-armour by a magister doesn’t come cheap, particularly given the expense of the materials. Luckily, you can change the quality of it slightly.

>What sort of armour and weapons are you looking for?

Ask some questions and I’ll answer as best I can. Base cost of the armour is 10TBY per suit (you have 395 left) but would rapidly increase if you add more than the basic features (physical protection, silent movement, voice projection).

Weapons are up to you guys, though remember that Talon’s currently using ordinary swords.

Even the early residency of Byzantium had an extremely different culture. The people were mostly Greek, in ethnicity and practice. The East mostly lost the ability to use a well-trained standing army due largely to disloyalty and infighting. Period. You can look it up.

There's a reason modern nations use more Roman tactics of discipline and fieldwork than Eastern Rome did.

>for Undine something slippery so it's hard for attacks to hit directly
I'm not sure how this would be achieved with armour.

>for finn something light that improves his speed but will make it so he has to heal at least his extremities- forearms, feet, face
Light is easy-ish but magical speed increases can't be done because it conflicts with his magic.

>>32787947
Finn can't actually use magic without his tattoos. The tattoos are literally what is casting the magic which is why his spells automatically reactivate, even if he's sleeping.

>>32787983
>Actually if we could enchant normal clothing that might just work.
That can be done but it wouldn't be as durable as full armour.

>>32788018
It's possible to hide somebody's 'magical signature' but it's also very obvious. It's like walking around in public with a big cloak with your hood over your face - everybody knows you have something to hide (and some can penetrate the illusion). Also, it wouldn't help against spiritualists like the foxes or monks.

Not really possible for her wings and tail if you meant the physical parts of her.

>>32788021
>Swords? Are there anti-magic spell-cutting swords?
THere's one but it's very special so no, not really. The only other anti-magic explodes on contact with magic and is highly illegal in Ahm.

It was a comparison to Eastern Rome, which was notoriously fraught with disloyalty and the perhaps resultant reliance on mercenaries.

>>
>>32788130
Alright. If he's not using magic without the tattoos, then can't there be an enchantment to suck in the abient energy to supplement? half tats, half residual? Or maybe recycling the stuff he's already used. Any way to not have to push his inner energy to the breaking point like he did during the PoP.
>>
>>32788130

Yeah, then the illusions wouldn't be useful then, dropping that idea.

>>32788160

We should probably spend time coming up with badass armor and weapons instead of unrelated subjects.
>>
>>32788130
I"m thinking we should get some regeneration armor for Lynn just because regenerating dragon girl sounds pretty painful. Though personally I would rather get some powerful weapons. Something Like a LMK weapons to cut though everything.

think like a slipstream around the armour. a current that forces weapons more to the edges so they hit at an angle
>>
>>32788187
Well! Are there weapons which could interact favorably with the elements of Gnome and Undine?

Potentially we could have some elemental synchronization going on. But anti-magic weapons and armor seem very useful, too.
>>

>>
>>32788261
For us. The QM also mentioned a non-exploding one. Magic defense can be quite useful.
>>
>>32788130
The important question is:

Do they sell The Dagger of Time?
>>
>>32788130

Armor that gives some basic magic resistance should be useful.

Could we also put some kind of lingering effect on our sword? Like a magical poison or paralysis that would make our opponents weaker with every strike?
>>
>>32788130
Honestly my first thought is.

Lynn-A copy of our armor.
Talon-A absurdly sharp and durable greatsword.
Salamader- A fire scimitar with sharpness enchantments.
Finn- Magic armor.
>>
>>32788284
Said non-exploding one is irreplicable, in the possession of Malataine's military commander and also capable of repelling Astral power.
>>
>>32788334
I'd honestly be more interested in making it sharper. Anything we fight is probably going to shrug off magic effects like that. Not so much Talon taking a supernaturally sharp sword though the face.

Main functional ideas are:
>Sharp and durable greatswords for Talon and Lynn. Maybe with some form of paralysis effect. Negligible price.
>Replica of Talon's armour (as close as possible) for Lynn. 15TBY with weak magical protection.
>Light-weight version of Talon's armour (as close as possible) for Finn. 15TBY with weak magical protection.
>Magical reinforcement for Undine's armour. Negligible price.

Anything else?

>>32788226
>But anti-magic weapons and armor seem very useful, too.
The magical protection built into your armour is out of reach for this enchanter but he could reproduce a weaker variety. Other anti-magic doesn't really exist for protection

>>32788177
He doesn't use ambient magic, so not really. And even if he could, his magic is transmutative so it wouldn't give him much - most armour could barely hold the power for a permanent Empower Self I, let alone keeping up with Finn's permanent Empower Self II. That's why Mal's research into the magic-storing crystals is important.

>>32788174
There's a mythical Weapon of Power called the Anti-Magic Blade. It's the only weapon capable of nullifying both sorcery and astral power. It was lost long ago etc.

>>32788213
Not really possible.

>>32788337
>Salamader- A fire scimitar with sharpness enchantments.
This would be worse than useless as she can produce something better on the fly.

Basically, Vad, Taira, Gnome and Sala don't need or want better equipment.

>>32788334
>Could we also put some kind of lingering effect on our sword? Like a magical poison or paralysis that would make our opponents weaker with every strike?
That's possible. You don't know the potential effects of mixing your astral power with a sorcerous sword, though, but you could find out.
>>
>>32788505

Since the price is negligible, can we get two swords? One with the effect and one without?

We can test it and give the remaining sword to Felix or one of his bros.
>>
>>32788505
You know, honestly, we should spend some good quality library time seeing if we can make Astral Focus weapons.
>>
>>32788505

Was thinking more it would be useful for conserving magic power. Since she could just smash shit with it until she needed something better then she could make it better. But I see the idea.
>>
>>32788505
What sort of elemental effects could we stack on Talon's sword? Like a blade of ice or something?

Not sure why we would really want one. Mainly because in general a massive sword to the face is going to be more damaging then if it makes you a little cold afterwards.

Though wait. Could we get a anti-regeneration sword? That would be painful with Talons massive strength.
>>

>>
>>32788707
Really, most of the stuff seems rather unhelpful, unless that can do really odd non-elemental enchantments.

Like a Phase Blade might be good!

Otherwise, a variety of monofilament equivalents, sharp and durable, is probably better.
>>
>>32788765
She likes fire I suppose? That and it doesn't have as much mass as ours does. In general Talon is less a fireswords/icesword person and more a "Make this hit harder with or give it something esoteric."
>>
>>32788765
Fire's actually a useful enchantment to put on a sword, it starts to melt whatever you're hitting so the blade requires less effort to cut.

An ice sword would have the opposite effect.
>>
>>32788824
Honestly, we need esoteric tricks if anything. Phasing, soul trap, psychic scream, etc.

Can we get a Wailing weapon that screws with magic senses on use or strike?

Buying special swords for your guard would cost 1TBY.

Total cost of equipment is 31TBY. More for each anti-regen sword you buy (note that they don't stack with the sharp/durable enchantments so the price includes replacements). The order will take two months, plus two weeks per anti-regen sword.

>Sharp and durable greatswords for Talon and Lynn. Maybe with some form of paralysis effect. Negligible price.
>Replica of Talon's armour (as close as possible) for Lynn. 15TBY with weak magical protection.

I'll call a vote momentarilly.

>>32788655
He'll basically get a decent boost in protection at the expense of very little mobility (little enough that it would likely only come up in the narrative rather than the mechanics).

>>32788637
The issue is that it's not a matter of overriding existing enchantments - they would actually conflict. Using equipment with a conflicting enchantment actually prevents you from using your own abilities.

>>32788707
That's basically a sword that effectively curses wounds to burn for some time (like an invisible fire that eats at the flesh around the wound). You could get the same for freezing if you'd prefer that, thoguh Undine can now give you that enchantment temporarily with her new ability.

>>32788732
They don't really make those in a mage tower as mages could just do that themselves.

>Although speaking of faeries, are there weapons that are ostensibly a bound spirit?
Yes.

>And as well, what might go into making Astral interactive weapons?
You don't have the slightest clue. The angels or astral adepts are probably the best place to start for that knowledge.

>1 & 1

You place the order for the weapons and armour. All up, it comes to a price of 49TBY - you'll have to arrange with Marcus when you get back to make the payment. You'll receive the full amount of goods in 5 months, but they'll deliver the armour in 2 months time.

Unfortunately, if you want to expand your guard and keep them just as well equipped you'll need to arrange for your own expert armour and weapon enchanter. The sheer amount of time and cost it takes to create the specialised equipment would make it uneconomical to do so for anything except a small guard - which is probably why the towers tend to use spellblades and mages, as they rely on their own abilities, and the RSK uses masses of elite mage-knights, as the mixture of skill and numbers overcomes the limits of their equipment. If you want to break the trend you'll need to dedicate time and resources to it.

You had hoped to catch Mal in the library but your purchases, combined with Finn and Caitlyn dragging you to the other stores to sight-see, kept you busy until lunchtime. You run into your friend outside the hotel, a pair of simple golem summons carrying a bunch of tomes with them.

“You’re not supposed to rob the library, Mal,” you say, eying the books nervously. You don’t want Merce or Alyce coming after you over this.

“These are transcribed copies,” Mal says, waving it off.

“I don’t think you’re supposed to do that, either,” you say.

“I got permission off the magister governing the library,” he says, smiling a bit. “With a bit of help from Sala.”

“You shouldn’t threaten them, Mal,” you say.

“Stop assuming I did things wrong, Talon,” Mal replies as you ascend the stairs to the room. “And Sala did the exact opposite.”

Whatever ‘the exact opposite’ is, you don’t get to find out. You hear an argument in your suite, and Vad is standing patiently outside the room, reading a book. Once second you can hear a pair of raised voices in heated argument with each, the next silence. The difference is that you opened the door. Standing in the doorway and looking inside, you see Taira and Tsucchi standing on opposite sides of the room, their tails flared out. There’s no damage to the room but Tsucchi does appear to be underdressed. Knowing her, she probably was sleeping in – in fact, you’d almost be willing to bet that Taira woke her up.

“So, is this a serious argument or a ‘you-woke-me-up-without-good-cause’ argument?” you ask, eying the two women.

Taira tilts her head in confusion as Tsucchi smirks and shakes her head. As she slinks back into her room, Taira chases her in, badgering her with questions. You shake your head – whatever it was, they don’t want to talk to you about it. You settle in after a long period of activity and quickly find yourself drifting off on one of the sofas.

As you come back into the realm of consciousness, you find yourself with a rather soft lap pillow. You are in the lap of…

Indeed. This quest is rather fun! And remember, there's always the "more magic" option, for when and/or if you want more magic. In your life.

I wondered how I could fit it in. It would have been a dream sequence.

>1.

You open your eyes to see Taira’s green eyes locked onto yours. There’s a smile floating on her face and you’re pretty sure she’s stroking your hair. She doesn’t seem to react to your awakening, instead just mouthing a ‘good afternoon’ and continuing her stroking.

That’s when you realise you’re covered in a blanket made up of golden fluffy tails. The room appears otherwise empty and you’d guess that it’s a few hours after noon. You’ve been napping for at least three hours. Assuming you’ve been like this for some time, the other girls would have seen you with Taira. You might need to check how they’d feel if she ‘forced’ her way into the harem – just in case. Bringing Sarah into it without warning seemed to have caused some slight friction.

Or you could just let them manage their own catty politics. Probably for the best.

Eying the fluffy tails, you remember the fact that Taira didn’t react at all to them coming into contact with you previously. This could be a golden chance, pun intended, to stroke some fluffy tails freely. Or at least cause her to panick.

>What do you do?

There probably won't be anything serious, save for a cliffhanger on the very last post, so people are free to leave without missing stuff if they're only here for the serious-ish business. Not sure how long this will go for.

You know that is actually pretty fucking awesome of a mental image. Two anons screaming about their waifus while on military grade helicopters jousting over a exploding volcano.

>stroke the fluffy tails

You reach up and begin to tentatively stroke the big golden tails lying atop you. Taira doesn’t appear to react, apart from a slight narrowing of her eyes as you slowly caress her fluffiness.

Her tails are soft to the touch and compact slightly under even the small amount of pressure you’re applying. Just from that, though, you receive the amazing sensation in your hands of stroking them. It’s pure heaven, just stroking the tails endlessly. Every other tail you’ve stroked has been retracted almost immediately – or the fox in question has immediately jumped past the foreplay. Taira doesn’t seem to be as affected so you are free to just enjoy yourself.

“This is a rather simple pleasure, you know?” Taira says suddenly, pushing you out of your stupor. “I don’t mind, as it’s nice, but most men usually skip past the tails after a little while.”

“Heathens,” you say glibly. “Though I guess it’s not such a big deal with foxes.”

“Hmm, actually, I was comparing you to most human men,” she says, her hand resting on your forehead for a moment as she thinks. “You actually behave more like many foxes do.”

“I see,” you lie and the two of you fall silent for some time.

As you lay in Taira’s lap, your hands stroking her many golden tails, you begin to hear rain patter on the windows nearby. It had been overcast earlier, but you hadn’t expected actual rain. That means your relaxation will be cut short by an assault by the other women shortly. In the meantime, you simply continue to relax with Taira – she appears to be enjoying herself. Part of you wonders how exciting this is compared to her regular life here – then realise she just compared your behaviour to that of the foxes she used to spend time with. Probably a slight hint that you’re on the right track.

“You didn’t bring it up earlier,” Taira says suddenly, looking out the window as the rain crashes against it, “but I do have to wonder exactly what you are. You’re not human, but nor are you like the archangels or the Three Lords – I would know, I’ve met them. You remind me of them, but... are different. Do you know what you are?”

“No,” you say simply. “I would have hoped you would know more.”

“Ah. A shame,” she says, looking back at you as the rain continues to fall harder and harder with each passing minute.

There’s several long moments as she gazes into your eyes, her hand shifting to your chest – and it reminds you of what she did when you first met. Except you haven’t drunk any drugged tea this time. Clearly it’s some form of diagnostic spell, as you can see the tips of her tails move almost imperceptibly despite your grip on them.

You get the feeling you should bring up a topic now, given that the two of you are alone. It’s probably the best time to discuss anything you might not want others to hear.

"What do you think of the familiars? Salamander, Gnome, and Undine?"

also not really a question for her but probably bring up the amusing story of that one time we almost married a fox to get her reaction.

Don't forget to play with the tails, wave 'em around and, here's the most important part, braid them when she's talking and distracted.

Doesn't fit that well. Talon would want there to be others to fight or to be with. Not turn everyone and everything into him.

Well Dagoth Ur wanted the ascension of the Dunmer through corpus hybridization.

But I mean normal conquest is fine, too!

Although, mentioning old Sotha, we may have Andasreth Propylon Indices to find...
>>
I was thinking about the scene with Tsucchi where we nerely blew a fuse at her subservience posture.
The whole "monster under my skin" thing...

Astral power is basically the power to warp reality in your image and will.

I think inner talon's negative reaction was actually because finding out that his close personal slice of reality has been wrong all along is a blow against his astral power. As well as the instinctive desire to correct it.

This would have interesting psychological implications when dealing with astral beings. But also suggests that inner talon is not actually a monster, rather this is a case of orange and blue morality.

I had some more thoughts about the issue but they keep slipping away from me.

So warm, anon.

“Vad said you left the Six-Star Alliance because Ren refused to marry you. Is that true?” you say, keeping your tone lighthearted.

In reply, a couple of Taira’s tails lift up and bap you in the face. It actually feels quite nice. She gives you a dark look as she replies verbally, “Ren did refuse to marry me after his 300th birthday as he was supposed to, but that wasn’t the reason I resigned as leader of the alliance. That was because he was now suitable to be leader as he’d held his eight tails for almost a century by then. Vad was doing well in Pharos and getting along with Ren and my clan needed a new leader.

“The foxes needed new blood to lead them. So I resigned, fully expecting Ren to be made the alliance head – instead they appointed that empty-headed fool, Torin, and everything fell apart over time,” she finishes, voice flat. “Still, they’re flourishing over here so I don’t feel the need to try to save them – and they’re technically flourishing in Pharos. If I have to go back and save them it defeats the point of leaving in the first place.”

You wonder if there’s some simply stubbornness in Taira’s actions, but leave your suspicions unsaid for the moment as you begin to weave a braid from two of her tails. It’s not that different to weaving hair, except there’s a lot more of it.

“What about the elementals? What do you think of them?” you ask, distracting her from your play with her tails.

“They’re more attractive than I’ve ever read about,” she says. “Which is the complete opposite of you – you have an allure but some of the books make you out as something altogether different.”

“Many of those authors don’t have any idea about anatomy either,” you say gruffly, eliciting a laugh from her.

“True. I’m going to guess it’s not this big, then?” she says, grinning as she holds her hands apart at a length almost as long as her torso.

>Response?
>>
>>32791047
Well... not necessarily in our best interest so much as to expect such a thing to pop our fuse in the future. knowing where and why its coming for can help us deal with it in a proper way (make it real by finding a solution rather then lashing out in anger making things worse)
>>
>>32791026
>orange and blue morality.

That's how I've always seen it. The archangels did help save the world and they are also inhuman in morality.

Though that is just a theory about the demi-god persona. I keep getting the feeling whatever it is didn't like it for an entirely different reason.

Kind of makes sense in a way. We know using source power that Talon can't do something he can't imagine.

So it would make sense if it did leave blind spots in the world view. Though one of my theories is the inner persona just doesn't like it.

I've always had the idea that it was justifying the internal reality that he has and/or boosting his minds strength though that.
>>
>>32791190
Oh, I was actually just about to get to that.
The whole thing came to me as I was laying to sleep 3 days ago. And I was piecing it back from memory for that post.
So, a couple of minutes ago it came to me how this could also tie into the FR... but then it all crashed down when you said "so warm" indicating I got something wrong.
now... damn I forgot again.

Right FR, I remember the inspiration was tying the tsucchi scene to the scene when we killed that shadow vampire and got FR... We made "reality" conform to our view of what it SHOULD be. We corrected the "real" world to match our perception of what SHOULD be. Our poor of mental fortitude (that same fortitude that was threatened by finding out a slice of our personal reality was wrong) swelled in ... pride? self confidence?... not quite, I can't find the word for it.
