"Nnnngh..."

As I regain consciousness, I notice that my head actually isn't hurting... but instead, my entire body's aching. How wonderful.

With my eyes shut tightly in order to fend off the light of the morning sun, I flop my arm around in search of my glasses. But I can't feel them anywhere.

"C'mon, did they fall on the floor again?" I groan as I open my eyes and squint in hopes of being able to at least kind of see where my glasses might have fallen... but then I realize that I'm not in my bed.

Well, my legs still are. I can feel one of them propped up on top of my mattress, I think the other one's wedged between it and the boxspring... and the rest of me is contorted in some really freaking bizarre way such that my head and most of my upper body ended up UNDER THE FREAKING BED.

Why in the world...

>[1/?]
>>
>>32809442
>[2/2]

After taking a few minutes to untangle myself while trying not to hit my head against the underside of my bed, I roll out into the open and stand up. Just in time for my phone's alarm to go off.

"WAKA LAKA'S MAGICAL AND TENDER NUSICAL AND WONDER FANTASY," my phone starts blasting at full volume. It's everything I can do to keep from smashing it right then and there.

That song was picked for my alarm specifically because of the rage that it fills me with whenever I hear it.

Fully awake thanks to that wonderful combination of forced gymnastics and annoying DDR music, I snatch my glasses off of my nightstand and put them on before heading downstairs to get something to eat.

Cereal acquired.

Milk doesn't smell like it's spoiled.

Now to get a bowl...

"Good mooooorning, sleepyhead!" Allison's cheery voice calls out just as I'm reaching in the cupboard for something to put my food in. "How kind of you to pour a bowl of cereal for your big sister!"

She's always so... ugh.

I can't stand morning people.

Just caught up with the quest today. Why haven't we asked Irene or Charlotte what they plan to do with the books or about their organizations goals at all? Because I can't think of a reason to not burn them other than making a private army.

Most likely to not sound too suspicious. We also haven't asked what they do to those who read the books, either, so saying our powers are natural gets them off our trail.
>>
>>32809653
Burning magical shit is rarely a good idea.
also >>32809731
>>
>>32809731
There is NOTHING suspicious about asking these people why they want the power granting books they want us to hand over. It's common sense.

I'll be disappointed if Charlotte isn't already planning to have an animal follow us around anyway. It's for our own good and we know she can communicate with them over a distance.
>>
>>32809806
We also don't know if Charlotte and Irene are in either two different branches of the same organization, or in two entirely different organizations. The smaller target we make ourselves, the better off we are.
>>
>writing
>>
>>32809870
We've already caught their notice. Our friends haven't, and they're the ones with the books, so we should take one for the team and request more information.

How else are we supposed to learn anything?

"If you want me to pour you some cereal then why don't you ask politely," I say, rolling my eyes at her.
"Oh, sorry!" Allison laughs. "My adorable baby sister Cecile, would you mind pouring your beautiful older sister a bowl of cereal?"
"Yeah, yeah..."

Grumbling all the way, I pour a bowl of cereal for myself and fill it with milk before starting on Allison's.

"Hey Cecile?" Allison calls out from her seat at the table.
"What?" I reply.
"When are you gonna introduce me to her?"
"Huh?" I turn to her. "Introduce who?"
"Your pretty new girlfriend, of course!"

damn it why is she still on this

"I only caught a little glimpse of her through the window so I'm still really curious..." Allizon laughs.
"Allison," I say.
"Hm?"
"Do you -want- me to spit in your food? Because I totally will if you don't shut up."

Every time I do something nice for this girl, I always wind up regretting it.

"Sorry, sorry!" Allison says, laughing. "I didn't mean to embarrass you or anything!"
"Yeah, you just don't want me to spit in your food," I reply as I finish pouring the milk into her bowl. "Why are you even up at this hour, you usually spend Saturday mornings totally hung over."

Even though she's still under the drinking age.

"Oh, that's because I have business to take care of today!" Allison says as I hand her a bowl of cereal.
"Business?" I ask.
"Yup, they're supposed to be done with Kevin's car today so I was going to go with him when he picks it up!"
"...so you're still with this guy?"

That's a surprise, I didn't take him for the kind of guy she'd consider a "keeper."

"And why -wouldn't- I be?" Allison says, pouting. "Kevin's pretty hot, and he treats me nice too..."
"Sure he does," I reply in between spoonfuls of cereal.
"Why are you so suspicious of him? He even said that he'd be willing to give you a ride in his car when we get back!"
"Not interested," I shake my head. "Besides, I have my own stuff to do today."
"Oh?"

Great, there's that smile again.

"Going to be spending the day with a special someone?" Allison asks.

Yeah, I've had enough of this.

Without saying another word to my stupid sister, I wolf down my food as quickly as I can and drink the leftover milk in my bowl, then drop it in the sink before making my way back upstairs.

"You can't run away forever, you know!" Allison calls out from downstairs.
"Shut up!" I shout back.

After deciding to ignore any more of her attempts to provoke me, I walk over to my windowsill and check on the flowers that I'm trying to grow. Luckily, it looks like they're doing pretty well... with a sigh of relief, I water my little plant buddies.

I've always found taking care of plants to be relaxing.

I was kind of worried that my little cactus wouldn't be getting enough light in here, but it seems to be doing just fine. And the seedlings I planted a few weeks ago are actually growing pretty well... though I might have to repot them soon.

But that's gonna have to wait for another day, now is the time for me to take a quick shower...

...actually, scratch that. I'm still feeling sore as hell.

After taking a nice halfhour-long soak in the tub (don't want to waste too much time, after all), I throw on some clothes, get my phone and other stuff together, and then it's out the door with me.

I guess I should hurry over to Mina's place before she thinks that something happened to me. She seemed pretty worried when I told her about Irene yesterday, and I know how she gets so I'd like to avoid worrying her any more than I have to... assuming that she's even conscious right now, that is.

Both me and Theresa were knocked right out when we read that book, so chances are that Mina's going through the same thing.

And there's that first Synapse fainting spell thing to keep in mind, too. But it's probably better that she gets that over with as soon as possible... better to have it happen at home than out in the public like it happened to me.

Push the doorbell...

...

.....

........

After maybe a minute, I hear the sound of footsteps approaching and see a familiar face peeking through the window of the front door.

And then the mail flap opens.

"Go away, I'm not interested," a voice echoes through the small opening.
"C'mon, quit playing around," I say, shaking my head.

"Well, just who -is- it that's visiting my place at this hour?" the voice asks.

"With Mina, yeah," I reply. "She's home, right?"
"Yeah, she's somewhere around," he shrugs.

Marcus then leads me into the house, stopping just in front of their family room. The TV's on, is someone in there?

"Andy's over and we're having a little tournament of sorts," he says, pointing to the TV that's showing a paused screen of some kind of shooty game. "Hey Andy, quit trying to cheat and say hi to CC!"

Turning around to wave hello, a guy with short dreads waves hello... it's been a while since I saw him around.

"Hey, Cecile!" Andy shouts from the other room. "Didja come over to get WRECKED in this game?"
"No, she's not into that stuff," Marcus shakes his head. "She's cool and all, but not -that- cool."

"Whatever," I say, rolling my eyes. "I'm here to talk about important stuff with Mina, not to play videogames with you two."
"You wound my heart, Cecile!" Andy says, falling over on the couch that he's sitting on like he just got shot or something.
"Uh... 'important stuff?'" Marcus starts to look a little bit worried. "Is this the kind of 'important stuff' that would necessitate me and Andy here to bust some heads? 'Cuz if anyone's giving either one of you problems..."

Great, he's playing the "overprotective big brother" card.

"No," I shake my head. "It's, um..."

"Girl stuff."

And then the room goes silent.

Marcus practically runs back into the room with Andy, unpausing his game and turning the TV up pretty loud... I guess he REALLY doesn't want accidentally overhear any of our alleged "girl talk."

Swallowing any feeling of guilt over lying to him, I make my way upstairs and stop in front of Mina's room.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

No answer.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

...still no answer. Maybe she's still knocked out?

Luckily, Mina's parents don't allow their kids to have locks on their door. Ad so, I carefully turn the knob and peek inside to check if it's safe before stepping inside.

A lifetime of living with Allison has taught me to be careful when entering other people's rooms unannounced.

Clearly your friends are different than mine. Some friends of mine were staying over at a mutual friend's place one night, and found his porn stash on his PC while he was asleep. Being good friends, they decided that the right course of action was to insert pictures of themselves into said stash.

"Oh, her?" Mina's eyes grow wide. "So you ran into her again... did you give you a reward for doing a good deed?"
"She did take me out for dinner, I guess?" I shrug. "It was a big fancy place at the hotel she's staying at, and everything there was so freaking expensive I could have cried."

Seriously, who the hell pays sixty dollars for a single steak?

"Sounds like a good time," Mina says, nodding.
"It was," I reply, "but, umm... it turns out that she's also involved with this thing with Branches and books and stuff..."
"WHAT!?" Mina jumps back. "S- she didn't try to do anything funny to you, did she? What's her power, did she tell you?"

"Aw man, now she knows where you live..." Mina mutters under her breath. "I bet that she has spec ops guys monitoring your house right now."
"She'd probably use birds to keep tabs on me if that was her intent," I say, rolling my eyes.

...wait, she -could- totally be doing that right now!

"Dammit, Cecile..." Mina grumbles. "There's a limit to how much you can trust people, you know?"
"I know, I probably should have been more careful," I reply. "I'm sorry, okay? But I didn't mention you or Theresa or that you have the books, so calm down some."

"Date?"

Now Mina's staring me down the way that Mom and Dad would do back when Allison would skip school to hang out with guys.

"N... never mind," Mina says, placing her hand on her forehead. "Information. Did you get any?"
"Umm, Charlotte said that she's here looking for that book you got, but she also said that she doesn't have any real backup so I'm assuming that she's part of a different organization from whoever IRene's with," I shrug. "She's working for a guy named 'Gauthier,' you heard of him?"

That's like, all the information I got from her.

So Charlotte's working for this Gauthier guy who likes to make a business presence in places where Branch stuff happens, and then there's whoever Irene is working for...

"Ugh, this entire situation is just..." I grumble.
"And now you understand why I'm so worried about all of this," Mina replies.

She's the big creepypaster paranormal buff here, not me. I could probably call Charlotte or Irene up and ask one of them for help, but I think I'll hold off on that for now. Best to stick with someone who I know doesn't have any ulterior motives.

This better not involve anything weird.

Speaking of edit I missed the "H" in Gauthier's family.
I'm starting to feel like archelon.

Well, archelon probably has a chart two orders of magnitude greater, with notes on each person 5 times as long.
So I guess I don't feel like archelon, and I'm glad about that. Archelon is suffering.

"You have UV vision, so maybe your Branch's effect is that it gives you have super eyes," Mina says.
"What, like laser eyes or something?" I ask.

That might be kind of cool.

"I was thinking more of like 'the power to see in any condition' or something," Mina says. "And so..."

Mina pulls out a long sock and stretches out out a few times before-

"You are NOT putting that thing on my face," I say, pushing it away.
"C'mon, it's clean!" Mina pleads. "I just did laundry the other day, and I haven't even worn this one yet!"
"You better not have."

I do not want her disgusting foot germs on my FACE.

"Alright, here we go," Mina says as she walks behind me and lowers the sock over my head, tying it tight behind my head so that any light reaching my eyes is blocked. "You good?"
"I guess?" I shrug. "This thing's completely covering my eyes."
"Great! Now open your eyes and tell me if you can see anything."

And so, the test to see if I have infrared vision begins.

"I'm standing in front of you now," Mina says. "Can you see anything?"
"No," I reply. "Just the fabric of this sock."
"Nothing?"

thump thump thump

"I'm jumping up and down right now, can you see me?" Mina asks.
"Nope," I shake my head.
"Crap..." she mumbles.
"Can I get this thing off my face now?" I ask. "It's pressing the lenses of my glasses up against my face, and..."
"Er, sorry about that."

At long last, the sock is removed from my face and I am free. After taking the time to clean off the lenses, I put my glasses back on and turn to Mina.

"I guess that means that you don't have IR vision," Mina says, sounding kind of dejected.
"I guess not," I shrug. "What next?"
"Ummmmmmm..." Mina scratches her head for a few seconds. "YOur glasses!"
"My glasses?"
"Yeah, maybe you don't need them anymore! Try taking them off and see if you can... see!"
"Um, okay?

And so, the test to see if I have normal vision begins.

"Can you see my face clearly?" Mina asks.
"No, my vision's as crap as ever," I reply, putting them right back on.

And so, the test to see if I have normal vision ends.

"Hmm, I guess your ability to see UV light didn't affect how much your cornea is curved..." Mina says, nodding her head.
"Yeah, sure," I shrug. "What now?"
"Umm..."

Mina takes me by the hand and pulls me over to her closet.

"I need you to go in there," Mina says.
"...what?" I stare at her. "Why?"
"I wanna see how good your night vision is," she replies. "first we'll start with limited light and work from there."
"As long as the doorknob doesn't fall off or anything," I reply.

At least Mina's closet is relatively spacious. I can stand in here without feeling -too- claustrophobic.

"I'm closing the door now, are you ready?" Mina asks.
"Yeah, let's just get this over already," I reply.

Slowly, the closet door closes in front of me... and the only thing I can think of is Allison taunting me about being in the closet.

"So can you see?" Mina asks.
"Yeah," I reply. "I can see just fine, there's plenty of light coming in from the cracks of the door."

Wow, I can actually see more or less perfectly right now.

The next five minutes are spent with Mina slowly covering the parts of the doorframe where light's leaking in little by little while asking me if I can see. And up until the last tiny bit of light is blocked, I can see pretty easily...

"Nope, that's it," I say as she covers up the final part. "It's pitch black in here."
"Alright, come on out..." Mina says as she opens the door

and a ton of socks fall all over me.

"Mina I am going to kill you..." I mutter through clenched teeth as I remove her filthy dirty laundry from my person.
"Ehehe... sorry," Mina laughs. "I guess I didn't think the end of that test through. But hey, at least we know that you can see clearly in pretty much everything but near-zero light conditions!"
"Yes, that's wonderful."

And then I pick up a pile of socks and chuck them right in her face.

I feel something lifting me up from underneath my shoulder and helping me to my feet... oh, it's Mina.

"What the HELL was that!?" I shout. "What were you thinking, sticking... whatever that thing was in my face out of the blue like that!"
"I bought that online, it's a fake centipede," she replies. "I got it to scare Marcus with when he gets on my nerves since he's scared of creepycrawlies like that, but I thought that maybe it would work on you too..."
"Well clearly it did!"

I had a freaking panic attack there!

"Yeah, it sure as hell did," Mina nods. "I figured that scaring you might trigger your ability out of reflex, and it worked."

"I guess it's worth a shot," I reply.

Light... how am I even supposed to do this? I guess the first time was on reflex, but it's not like I even have a clue as to how to do it again.

"I got nothing," I say, slumping over.
"Quit giving up on stuff before you even really try," Mina sighs. "Just... I dunno, think about how it felt to make that flashbang a little while ago and try and replicate that feeling. Toned down a LOT, of course."
"Alright, one more time then."

I close my mind and try and think back... I held out my hand at that nasty bug thing and it was like...

Focus on the space in my hand. Concentrate...

...gather it up...

Huh. My hand's feeling kind of warm. That's kind of weird, but maybe it's a sign that I'm doing it right! And so, I keep on concentrating on that small amount of space.

A little twinkling speck.

Little by little, it grows...

"Holy shit, Cecile!" Mina gasps. "You actually did it!"
"I... I guess I did," I mumble, looking in awe at the little dime-shaped glowing orb that's floating above the palm of my hand.
"Oh man, that's so awesome! And just think, maybe you'll be able to do even more when you get used to it..."

Me and Mina watch the tiny ball of light for a few minutes... but then I start to feel tired. Not tired like I want to go to sleep, tired like how I get after taking a really really hard math test or something.

And then... poof! It flickers away in an instant.

>[1/?]2

>>32818788

"Making that tiny thing took a lot out of me," I say.
"That was SO COOL!" Mina shouts as she hits me with a sudden tackle hug. "I can't believe it, my best friend has super powers!"
"Eheh... yeah," I reply with a big goofy smile on my face.

That first flash nearly knocked me out, but the little ball of light wasn't anywhere near as bad... maybe I'll be able to do more the more I get used to it?

"And now you know what your power really is, isn't that great!" Mina says, letting go of me.
"It's one less thing to worry about, at least," I reply. "Now I know I won't accidentally make someone's head explode or anything!"
"Yup!" she nods. "Ooh, I just got an idea!"

Still completely giddy, Mina runs over to her computer desk and comes back holding a tiny keychain flashlight.

By the way, I vote we give a way at least one of the books. That way, people are less suspicious of how our group gained their powers. We will also not be considered a threat by the organizations.

We could keep one book hidden in case we want to introduce more people to our flock.

We could also give both of the known organizations one book each. It would put us in their good graces without making one feel slighted.

I know he is likely to act against anyone holding books. That is the very reason I proposed giving them away.

The alternative is keeping a new group of branches hidden despite already having associated with several organisations. Other than short-term it seems a futile task.
>>
>writing
>>
>>32818972
I'm very wary about making ourselves seem important to organisations, when those organisations might not be trustworthy.
Giving books to these people involves a degree of trust that I am not willing to give (yet). Maybe in the future, but not now.
>>
I turn to the large spotlight that's on the wall, and then to the flashlight in Mina's hand. Focusing on the wall isn't going to be any help, and I don't think it's the source that'll affect what I'm trying to do either...

...no, it's the beam of light itself.

"Mina, stand still for a minute, okay?" I ask.
"Okay," Mina replies as I walk behind her and look over her shoulder. "...you're kind of close, Cecile..."
"Stay still."

Focus on the beam. On the light that forms the beam.

Reach out and hold...

With the mental image of myself actually holding the beam of light in my hand, I try and will it to shrink.

"Whoa, it's working?" I say as I notice the beam getting a little bit smaller.
"Looks like it!" Mina says, turning to me and smiling.

...yeah, we -are- a bit too close here.

Backing up a little bit so that it's not weird, I try and "squeeze" the beam a little bit more, and the circle that's cast on the wall does contract a little bit...

"Alright, experiment over!" Mina says, clicking the flashlight off.
"Huh?" I turn to her. "But I was still trying to see if I could make it smaller."
"We've learned enough for now," she shakes her head. "You can make light and control it too. I don't want you fainting from pushing yourself too hard too soon, you know?"
"Yeah, I guess," I shrug. "But shrinking the beam didn't really take much out of me. Maybe it's making light that's the really exhausting part?"

"That's pretty much all I had in mind as far as this stuff goes," she shrugs. "We know what your base power is now, so all that's left is the name for it."
