'Fuck me, sideways! Nearly bloomin' tore me in half, that did!'

The cries of your bard fall on deaf ears as you resume regaining consciousness. You meet eyes with your cleric as she lets out a relieved sigh. 'I had feared you had taken your last blow, you reckless brigand!'. Ah yes, you'd ran in the way of an unidentified spell, moments earlier. Tactical decision, of course.

You crane your head upwards, moving through the ache. Your ranger is already stripping the nefarious Necromancer of his rib cage, for her collection (you never asked and you never want to). Your wizard is... oh. Your wizard died a week ago; he bought you fools enough time to escape from wandering into a Harpy nest, outside this mountain. You suppress the 'It Should Have Been Me' spiel, racing through your head to finish your headcount.

The question of the rogue's whereabouts is made redundant as you hear an anguished cry from a figure by the huge chest, that the Necromancer was so eager to die for.

'Spells!?'
Oh lord.
'Fucking spells!?'
Please no.

The pitter patter of the boy's feet are a precursor to the swift kick landing on your chest plate. 'Spells! Tomes! Runes! Wonderful! IF WE HAD A FUCKING WIZARD!'

You hate when he swears- he's far too young.

'That's three runs now! Three runs that I've put my neck out, with gold promised at the end and I haven't seen even a lick of copper!'

You've heard this all before. You're on the right track and that's all you need to know, to keep exploring like this. The boy moves to sulk by the door and you sit yourself upright- the pain washing away, giving way to a warm, holding embrace.

This feeling comes from inside- look at them. Ranger stashing a rib cage into a bag of holding; cleric calming a scratched up bard and a pouty kid, eager to leave.

They're not much, but you sure as hell wouldn't trade them for anything else in this forsaken realm.

'Wake up! We're under raid!'

Fuck.

Your vision is filled with men, half dressed, grabbing weaponry, readying spells and scrambling about.

'You deaf, man?! UP! Orc raiders! Every man to post!' is screamed at you again, before a hurried man leaves your vision, grabbing bow and quiver and making a run for the door.

You've been dreaming a lot about the old days, before this whole mess. You were conscripted for the border war not long after downing that Necromancer and no matter how well hidden you thought you were, the King's conscriptors found you.

Anyway! Plenty of time for this later! Battle is afoot and agree with the war or not, you're not about to allow your life to be taken by some pillaging brute.

You jump from your bedroll and reach for... Hang on, what's my weapon again?

And with that the final blow is struck. Monks it is.

Of course! My mind and body are the only weapons I need- any more would just be unfair.

Readying your being, you make a run for the lower levels, down several cascades of stairs, hoping to reach the front lines before the raiders do. You fling yourself out the doors of your frontier post and out onto the familiar scorched earth and you see them.

This is not your day.

Mountain Orcs, plunged from their homes by your unit's advances are sending what they have left at your outpost. They are riding their catlike beasts, roaring a bloodcurdling cry as they close the distance. The fighters have mounted their lines, although you're not too sure how well it's going to hold against this cavalry. Your rangers and mages have begun cascading projectiles onto your enemy for... reasonable effect.

You must prepare for battle.

>Meditate; attempt to achieve some spiritual stability, in preparation for this assault.
>Join the ranks of the fighters- they may have spears to run these beasts through, but you have faith in the fist.

Works out to a meditate, I'd say.

The battlefield fades from your mind. You quieten the voices in your head, silence the cries of your compatriots and blank out the oncoming storm that is the Orcish charge.

Now you are but a petal, floating on a crystal sea. You are the wind that laps the waters and the gentle tide that guides you. You are one with the world around you. Eb and flow. Perfection.

Your eyes flick open with determination, barely containing the inner fire that lies within. The Orcs don't stand a chance. Your speed matches your strength, and your strength matches your wit. You know damn well to fell a feline here, would be impossible, opting to instead weave in and out of the way of cavalry, picking off any Orc who dare break from their mounts.

You feel the energy of any Orc around you, who is susceptible- you could do this with your eyes closed. Crushing windpipes with jabs, cracking sternums with kicks and breaking ribs with palms, you leave no dead, only incapacitated.

The skirmish is done with, it ended as quickly as it started and you take a second, now, to recover your senses. Your lungs are burning- you always push yourself to your limit, but you'd have it no other way.

As you turn to face your comrades, you see many of the soldiers beginning to execute those you subdued, laughing all the while.

Let's step in! (One of you was for executing, two were against, balanced accordingly)

You gather yourself and fill your lungs, that you might step in and intervene this war crime. You see that by the time you make it, they have culled about a third of the group. You are almost sickened by those you are forced to call brother.

'We must prove that we are the nobler. If order is to ever be instilled on this rock, it shall be instilled by our order, not theirs. Stand down, they have nowhere left to fall back to.'

A few glares ensue and a few soldiers look down, to their handiwork. The bloodshed always takes a moment to dawn.

The Orcs that can gather themselves flee with their tails between their legs. Those that can't, begin to pass.

Just another day at the frontier post.

You head off, back to the posting, you don't like being outside for too long, closed spaces feel safer: the outpost's hallways, the barrack's sleeping quarters... the catacombs of a dungeon.

Wait, where did that come from? You haven't stepped foot in a dungeon in years. Control yourself.

You need a distraction.

I'll take 'em

You swing by the canteen, on your back into the post, grab the cut of meat and carrot you've been rationed and head up to the roof.

There's a warm breeze blowing up here. An omen? Maybe. Homely? Definitely. You sit on the edge, overlooking the great expanse and marvel. The 'civilised' races scorched the ground here, all to discourage the Orcs, the Giants, the Trolls and yada yada from crossing over into their kingdoms. All it did was force them to get even closer to raid anything of importance, raising tensions until this war broke out.

You let out a sigh, politics never were your suit. You always preferred the manual grind; some hard labour was always what you were up for.

Your food is cold- typical.

Just as you're finishing up, and feeling slightly better for having come up here, you overhear a familiar voice beneath you, by the stairwell. It appears to be the voice of your officer here and someone else you can't quite pinpoint. Why are they so high up on the outpost? The commander normally stays in his quarters- basement level.

Something might be afoot.

>It's none of your business, either let them finish and leave, or just pass them, quickly.

You let out a few loud coughs, rhythmically and the voices cease. There's a general mumbling coming from the stair well and your commander pops his head over, onto the roof.

'Ah, it's you. Get over here, we have word from the capital.'

You don't share in his joy, but you do follow his orders and trudge downstairs. You recognise the soldier he's talking to as being one of the few who glared at you, after you stopped the slaughter outside. You never liked him.

'Thankyou for joining us- I have an important announcement.'

Hooray.

'Our regiment, as of tomorrow, will be officially indoctrinated and accepted into The Keepers! We have worked hard and the King has given us this great...'

You drowned out whatever he was saying afterwards. This was a joke, surely. You signed up for The Keepers if you had nothing left in life, if you loved your country, but were otherwise suicidal. You were conscripted for a three year stint, not a life time commitment.

'... and Lord Hemmin shall be here to personally oversee the branding! I'll be informing the others shortly, be on your best behaviour, and do try to look good for Slanel's sake. Dismissed.'

The other soldier hastens down the stairs, towards the commons. You are a tad shocked to say the least.

You take your commander's dismissal and retreat back to your rooftop. This is the first time you've ever really taken note of your surroundings, out here. You're in a valley. Mountains surround you on your East and West. North is where you're advancing, slowly. South leads back home but it's a fair distance. You haven't seen home in a long time.

Huh, no clouds today, go figure.

You take some time, fiddling around with asinine thoughts, until you finally work the gumption to address the main issue- could you live with being a Keeper?

It is their job to stand watch over the kingdom, route evil wherever it is found and all that nonsense, but it is a life in shackles. Never to be wed, to take a vow of celibacy, even an oath of silence in some sects. You'd never own a thing again in your life.

However, you'd be kept. You would be admired and respected. You could become a captain- they can own a fort. Still it seems like so much to give up.

If you're being honest with yourself, you'd always pictured yourself serving your stint here, then getting the family back together. The kid'd be growing up, without you and the cleric would be running out of people to yell at.

You need to make up your mind

Let's settle this shit. We are the muscle wizard. (Monk-Wizard hybrid, focused upon strikes).
Here's what your character knows he can do- empower his strikes with the elements, meditate before combat to enter a combat trance and he can cast fist. He was a simple adventurer beforehand and had people to be keeping safe, so didn't experiment too often, with risky maneuvers, however, now that we have nobody with us, perhaps experimentation is a way forward.

You prepare to enter the compound and sneak into the commons, to discern the nature of this when you quickly summarise the odds here. Of about 50 soldiers down there, causing some kind of crap, one of them is surely to spot you, even if you do quiet yourself. There's no chance you could- well...

Fuck it, no time better.

You do what you always do, before you try anything like this. You quiet your mind and work hard to focus your energy into one tangible point.

...

...

Got it.

Using your oft untapped magical potential you find yourself clinging to the shadows. Not invisible you admit and certainly not an aversion charm, but when you couple this shadow-mingle with your natural stealth, you are confident that nobody down there will notice you.

You slip down the stairs, silent, like the wind and focus on what's being said.

'YOU'RE CUNTS- THE LOT OF YOU'

Is distinctly heard before the smashing of glass. It's him again, the one who was laughing about the slaughter.

'AND FUCK YOUR KEEPERS TOO! I'M LEAVING AND WHOEVER ELSE HAS A BACKBONE IS WELCOME TO JOIN ME!'

More commotion is heard. It's hard to get a general consensus on who's on whose side.

South it is.

As quickly and quietly as you can, you gather what supplies you have, swipe provisions from the canteen and you're out of a window and away, across the wastes. A cursory glance backwards would indicate that the sentries are, too, caught up in the rabble downstairs. It's plain sailing from here.

Or so you thought.

Things never did have a habit of working out for you and it turns out that the provisions that were sent to that shithole were very, very close to expiry, to begin with. By your second day of travel, you have no edible provisions and it's uncertain if you'll make the remainder of the trip without them (7 days). We must act if we're to survive this road.

You once survived off little more than lichen from the underside of rocks, whilst your party took a fortnight to dig you out from under a landslide. You fight on, digging as deep as you can and just taking it one step at a time.

So long as you don't get greedy and drink more water than you should at any one point, you can make it. You know you can. You press on.
It's nightfall. You've made up a simple camp. You're not feeling very well and your stomach is screaming at you. You feel as though if you sleep now, you may not wake. But if you do not sleep, you will not have the strength to move onward, come the morning.

You really didn't realise how underfed you were, back at the outpost. Or how hot the runic scorching made this land. You're just a day away, you have to keep moving.

>Fuck sleep, if you can get to a frontier town, you can visit the medic, get some food
>You can't move on without sleep, it's unreal, any other man would've died of heat exhaustion by now, just rest

It's true that your body has endured hardships and it's true further that your mind has taken worse. But the night is as cruel as it is dangerous.

You aren't sure how you get there. You aren't sure where 'there' is. What you do know is, you've woken up, feeling marginally better, on a beach. You've never visited the coast in your life. You didn't even know there was a coast, this far up. Wherever you are, it's unmarked territory.

However, you've been lost before and you'll get lost again, so it's time to use our newfound strength and get moving. Bordering us are hills/grassy plains, woodland and a severe mountain. We have no reference level for compass directions, any more.

>Take to the woodlands, maybe there's a kindly druid nearby.
>If you could scale that mountain, you could see for miles.
>It only makes sense to build on the plains, civilisation, ho!

Plains seem like a good bet to find either people or food. Forest is probably second best option, but has a higher chance of running into elf territory or some other danger we are not in the best condition to fight.
>>
>>32859799
>>Take to the woodlands, maybe there's a kindly druid nearby.
And if not I'm sure we can hunt for animals.

Plains defiantly

The last thing we need right now is dwarves. Dwarves are mean, stubborn shits that will yell at us for being on their mountain and would gladly leave us to die outside of the walls of their stone cities than give us food or drink without paying for it in gold.

And I am pretty sure we have no gold.

We need food and water first, you idiot. We are seriously malnourished in case you have not been paying attention. We barely made it this far as it is.
Now is not the time for attempting a feat of endurance.

Plains seem reasonable to you. People are likely to build there, flora will be easy to scavenge, fauna shouldn't be too uncommon and there's no chance of getting lost, like the woods. Still, the prospect of just walking some more is losing its charm to you, but what are you going to do? You move on.

Finally, your luck turns.

It's definitely not your kingdom, you doubt it even belonged to a kingdom, but nevertheless, you found a river village. The first thing that strikes you is the size of the waterwheel; you thought the thing was a landform, about an hour ago when you first spotted it, now it just looks like an overeager mill-owner, or someone with an inferiority complex.

But, there's a saying about gift horses and their mouths and so, you decided upon your plan of action.

>Just walk in, it's a town, for crying out loud
>Survey it first, never know, could be a vampire town
>Make note of it and turn around, back to your central point, allowing us woodland or mountain access, again

Monks are always aware. Absorb the cosmic existence of everyone in the area and decipher what is what. Become one with the fibres of reality and manifest it.
>>
>>32859960
That isn't going to happen.
We're hard.
Very hard.

We need to train in the mystic art of bodily preservation.

Besides, it's three weeks without food, two days without water, and may mountains tend to have delicious water.

Approach the town, but cautiously. Try not to walk into a trap, but lets not skulk around the place like a dishonorable thief in the night.

When it comes right down to it, if these guys are hostile we probably wont make it to the next town anyway.

Better safe than sorry

You skirt the town for a while, get a feel for it. There's not too many buildings, again, the most notable being the water mill. You'd say there's about 50, maybe 60 people in the place. It seems nice enough, harmless definitely. Like the kind of places you'd stop off at before you slaughtered a dragon.

However, you need a way to handle this- there's no road out here, so they can't expect many visitors, so do you go and introduce yourself? Or do you just walk in, like any traveler would? The protocol's iffy here, at best and you don't want to offend the first friendly faces you meet.

What the hey, you're not hurting anybody by being here, just walk in.

It doesn't work out too badly for you, a few quizzical glances from some stall owners, but that could just be your uniform.

Fuck me.

You need to get rid of that uniform, you're a deserter, you can't be seen in it, surely.

Your uniform is tatty, to say the least. You can't say you took the most pride in your service, but what are you doing to do?

It was pretty difficult pawning off a tattered soldier's garb, but you eventually found someone who could use it to strip the leather, for binds. He gave you a cloak, to keep yourself warm and bid you a fair day.

Okay, comfier clothes, civilisation, not in incriminating garbs, any more. Perfect. Now we just need something to eat.

Hmm. I don't think they deliver severance pay to deserters.

You enter the inn.

It's louder in here, warmer too. You haven't felt this much kinship in a room for a while. Everyone seems to be having a good time and you sit yourself down at the bar. The bar wench raises her finger to you- she'll just be one moment as she pours some drinks.

You don't mind. There's a familiar song playing from somewhere. Some song you knew in your younger years, by some half-terrible bard. Still, it's got its charm.

'What'll it be?' chirps your server.

You clear your throat and swallow a little bit of pride and explain your case and that you'd be happy to make an effort of repayment, when you can.

She says she'll get the owner for you, to check, just sit tight.

So you wait.

And you take a second to adjust. It can't be. There's no way. But now he's seen you and you know it's true. 'I saw him die in the Harpy nest' you say to yourself, as he awkwardly walks your way.

'W-what can I get you stranger?'

You feign ignorance and put on the smile of a humble man, making your case for food.

The wizard stiffens himself out a bit, gives a sideward nod, looks back and forth between the wench and you for a moment, before shooing her away to do something.

You wait for about 10 minutes and she comes back out with a plate of ham, tomatoes, bread and sausage. The wizard quickly informs you that no charge is in order and retreats back upstairs.

Does he really think you don't know him or did your con fail?

You finish your food and regardless of this happiness/anger you feel, all you care about for a little while is that food. It was the first real meal you'd had in years. You'd missed the outside world.

However, your duties are never done. You wipe your mouth, tuck in your stool and set your path upstairs. There are a series of rooms, presumably for patrons, on your left and right, with an office at the end. You give the office a knock, coupled with a 'Hello' or two, with no answer. You fiddle with the handle, but it appears locked. There's no other way for him to have gone.

He's ignoring me.
