You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Currently, you're on the tarmac next to your freshly assembled Ghost Hawk, ready and waiting to go. Your aircrew is already onboard, and they've assured you that everything's right where it should be. A dozen meters away, you see a Chinook that would be carrying the Christina's technical team and their equipment. You're pretty much ready to go. All you need now are for the Japanese witches to arrive.

Your witches, meanwhile, are busy getting fitted into their strikers in preparation for the trip. It was going to be quite a distance, and you'd require several stops to refuel, but you'd rather ride in an open helo with the wind blowing on your face than cooped up in a cramped, pressurized cabin.

You then see a Humvee and a trailer carrying a pair of strikers headed towards your landing area. Both vehicles grind to a halt, and the techs swarm the trailer as they begin to unload the pair of F-15 strikers. You see Jetstream and one other witch step out of the Humvee.

"Jetstream." You nod to acknowledge her presence.

"Captain." Jetstream nods back.

"Is this all that's coming?" You raise an eyebrow.

"We have been attached to your unit to assist you, not provide a full complement of witches." Jetstream explains. "Many of our sisters are already deployed in Korea or assigned to air defense in the Home Islands."

"I see." You then turn to Jetstream's wingwitch. Like most Japanese, she seemed much smaller and shorter than the average American. However, she exuded that typical Japanese nobility and self-assurance that they were largely known for. "And you are...?"

"Lieutenant Yuko Nabeshima reporting for duty, sir!" The small Japanese witch crisply salutes you.

"At ease." You say, returning the salute.

"You could just call her Euclid." Jetstream adds in.

"Sheesh, Major..." Euclid pouts.

"She got perfect scores on her mathematics exams." Jetstream explains. "That's what we've been calling her ever since."

Behind them, you see the technicians unloading the pair's strikers, along with their weapons. You see a katana and pair of Uzis, no doubt Jetstream's weapons. However, you also see a bow and a set of arrows.

"All right, I'll leave you to your preparations, then. We're due to life off in ten minutes." You say, and then focus on Euclid. "Anyways, Euclid, the other witches you'll be working with are right over there. The tall one there is Janice, the one with the knives is Tarin, and Red is the one with the red hair and katana."

"I see." Euclid nods. "Why does the red one not wear strikers?"

"Personal preference." You state. "Plus it's easier for her to move around on the ground that way. That's a very important thing in our line of work."

"I see..." Euclid frowns, clearly not convinced.

"Something tells me you disagree." You say. "What's wrong? Don't like pants?"

"N-no! Nothing like that!" Euclid shakes her head rapidly. "It's just... I find it hard to believe a witch would voluntarily forgo strikers! It's the highest honor to pilot one! Has... has she shamed herself somehow to deserve this treatment?"

"Nope. It's totally her choice." You say, look at Red as she talks with Rex about something you can't quite hear. "And honestly, I'm glad I can count on her to watch my back when we're on the ground."

"But-"

"Now now, Euclid." Jetstream laughs and slaps her subordinate on the back. "If's her choice to make, and if that's what she wants, who are you to say otherwise?"

"Understood, Major." Euclid sighs.

"Don't mind her." Jetstream grins at you. "Euclid comes from a well respected clan, so she is very much a traditionalist. I specifically nominated her to be my wing so that she can broaden her horizons."

"It just... still doesn't make sense to me." Euclid grumbles.

"Well, you can try asking her yourself when we get to Tokyo." You grin, ruffling Euclid's hair on instinct. The girl blushes while Jetstream gives a loud chortle.

The techs then yell something in Japanese, no doubt letting Jetstream and Euclid know that their strikers are ready. The two Japanese witches head off to get loaded while you return to the Ghost Hawk.

"Heh, putting the moves on the Jap witches now?" Bullseye grins as you step into the cabin. "Wonder what Janice would think about that."

"Just being polite." You sigh. "Janice is a big girl. She'll understand."

Finally, the ground crew gives you the all clear signal.

"Rescue One, you are clear for takeoff." The control tower announces. "Remember to follow your assigned flight path and do not deviate. The Japanese take their air defense very seriously and if you wander too far they may very well shoot you down."

"Got it. Thanks, Control." Bullseye says as he powers up the engines. "So how do you want us to do this, sir? We take slow and enjoy the scenery, or do you want us to get to Tokyo asap?"

You think on it. While taking it slow would be relatively relaxing and put less stress on your helo and the witches, you knew that the Japanese also took punctuality very seriously, and there was a war going on, after all.

Well, you might as well try to get something out of your normally quiet and stoic airman. Honestly, he was basically like a male version of Tarin in many respects, though you highly suspected that he didn't have a hidden cute side to him.

It would be kinda weird if he did, though.

"Hey, Rex, so what have you done with your leave time?" You ask as he does a weapons check on one of the mounted M134s. "I know you've been hanging around in England. Were you by yourself or were you with company?"

"Well, we did meet my brother, even if it was only in passing." Rex shrugged.

"'We?'" You raise an eyebrow. "So you WERE with someone..."

"You and Ghost? I never would have thought it!" You gasp with mock horror and shock.

"Oooooh, were you two dating?" Red's eyes widen.

"We're just friends." Rex says simply, though it looks more like he's trying to convince himself than you. "I helped her out some time ago and she feels she owes me."

"Suuuuuuure, Rex." Red grins.

"Well it sounds like there's a story behind that." You say, giving a quick glance at Red to get her to stop teasing Rex.

"It might take a while." Rex says simply.

"It's gonna be a long ride. We've got nothing but time." You say. You feel your momentum shift as the Ghost Hawk slowly begins picking up speed. Apparently Bullseye felt comfortable enough to go ahead at full steam.

"Yeah, well, it happened pretty early in the war, back when you were still in Alaska." Rex continues inspecting the minigun. "Ghost was sent behind the lines to strike Russian strategic assets before they could be deployed on the front. Something went wrong and she got shot down, and our bird was the one that got the call to extract her."

"Oooooh, I remember that one." Hoskins nods. "That was a pretty hectic one."

"The area was pretty heavily forested, so we couldn't actually land. I roped down to track her, and found her in the nick of time. The Russians were hot on her heels and they nearly caught up to her. I got rid of them, of course."

"Wait..." Red frowns. "Exactly how many guys were after her?"

"There were a lot of Russians looking for her, but there was a fireteam of Spetsnaz that were hounding her."

"You took out an entire Spetsnaz fireteam by yourself?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Ghost helped a bit." Rex said simply. "Anyways, I got her out of there. She's stayed in contact with me ever since."

"That's pretty sweet." You chuckle.

"Goddamn." Red shakes her head. "Never would have figured she actually knew you."

"Small world, I guess." Rex shrugs.

"So, are you actually dating her?" You ask the million dollar question.

"Well, not right now. At least I don't consider myself doing that. Ghost might, though." Rex sighs. I want to try and clarify things to her but... well... I just don't seem to find a good time to do it."

"But you DO like her?"

"Well, yeah, I guess." Rex nods. "It's not like I despise her or anything. I just feel that it's... just not the right time. You know, with the war and all, I think there's a lot of other things we should be worrying about first."

Rex certainly had a point. War was uncertain, and death could be waiting around any corner. However, that would be a bit hypocritical of you, considering your relationship with Janice. Hell, Bullseye's relationship with Nungesser was pretty open as well. Then again, in many ways, Rex just had a different way of thinking from the rest of you.

"You don't want to risk dying with regrets." You warn him. "Let her know how you feel while you still have the chance."

"Yeah, maybe I should." Rex nods. "I'll think about it."

"Aaaaaah." Red sighs as she leans back in her seat. "Must be nice having a significant other. Feels like I'm the only person on this bird who's single."

"Don't be silly, Red." You chuckle. "It's not that bad. I mean, I'm pretty sure Snips is still single."

"HEY!" Your copilot turns and gives you the stink eye.

"As far as I know." You shrug. "And Tarin doesn't have a boyfriend, either."

"Yeah, well, you know what I mean." Red grunts. "It just makes me feel left out, is all."

"Oh Red, you'll find love someday." You chuckle as you ruffle her hair. "You just can't expect it to fall in your lap, or anything."

The rest of the trip is fairly uneventful. You'd stop at a few airbases and airports to refuel on the way to Tokyo, and as you flew, you caught sight of the vast greenery of the Japanese countryside, contrasted with the majestic wonder of their cities, all pearl white and promoting the cutting edge future they promised to usher in.

However, off to the west, you could see visual indicators of something that could bring all that progress crashing down.

"Looks like a dogfight." Red says, squinting.

"Sure does." You nod. You can see white, smoky trails from jet engines and missiles snaking through the sky, with the occasional flash of an explosion.

"Rescue One, This is Okinawa Control, do you read?" Your radio buzzes.

(cont)
>>
>>32952392

"Copy that. We read you." You respond. "What's up?"

"There's an aerial battle between Japanese and Chinese aircraft just off the coast west of your position. We're still trying to analyze the data, but it's confirmed that we've got pilots in the water. You're not required to go, but Japan has requested any assistance you can provide."

"Bullseye, what's our fuel status?" You ask your pilot.

"Still in the green." He gives you a thumbs up.

"Janice? Jetstream? How are you all doing on magic?" You ask your witches.

"We've been pacing ourselves. We should have enough for a short engagement." Janice says.

"Heh, he makes it sound like we have a choice or something!" You chuckle. "Bullseye, we're going in. Keep us as low as you can manage so they won't spot us." You say.

"Got it." Bullseye nods as the Ghost Hawk banks as it turns. The witches turn as well in an effort to follow you while the Chinook continues on ahead to Tokyo. There wasn't much it could do to contribute to a battle, anyways.

As you get closer to the aerial battle, you get a better idea of what is going on. Ahead, you can see about four F-15Js, supported by ten F-4Js. They were flying against a Chinese force that was easily twice their number. While the Chinese J-7s and J-8s were copies of much older Russian airframes. However, while the more modern Japanese force was more advanced, China had the clear numbers. Planes from both sides twisted and turned in the air, with missiles and tracer rounds zipping about.

Meanwhile, down in the water, you can see the unmistakeable signs of airplane wreckage, and the beeping of rescue beacons and the sign of life rafts suggested quite a few people in the water.

"What do you want us to do?" Janice asked.

Well, you could send the witches to assist the Japanese. They could certainly use the help. However, that would leave your Ghost Hawk more vulnerable to potential attack.

"All right, we'll send two witches up to help out the Japs." You announce.

"All right, who are you sending?" Janice asks.

You consider your options. Jetstream and Euclid were largely an unknown quantity, at least for you, so you had no idea how they would perform. However, this was a chance to see them in action, and they would no doubt be in a better position to work with the Japanese planes. On the other hand, you were perfectly well aware of how capable Janice and Tarin were, and knew they'd do a good job regardless of what assignment they were tasked with.

To be fair, all the Japanese witches would be doing, in this instance, would be flying top cover while Pierce and and the rest of the chopper crew pick up survivors and wounded.

They should already know how to fly top cover for steelwings and helicopters.

We can tell them every thing they could ever want to know about PJ operations when we're not in the middle of actually trying to save lives. Now's not the time to play teacher.
>>
>>32953179
>Now's not the time to play teacher.
Exactly, and with lives on the line, now is to be as efficient as ever, and you don't get that by switching things up just to show off in actual combat.
>>
>>32953037
"All right, Janice, Tarin, you two head up and assist the Japs." You instruct. "Jetstream, you and Euclid stick close to us. Take out any hostile that gets eyes on us, but otherwise do not engage, is that clear?"

"Roger that." Jetstream affirms.

"Copy." Janice says curtly as she and Tarin pump magic into their strikers and gain altitude.

Down below, you, Red, and Rex scan the water carefully to find any downed pilots. You managed to fish a couple out of the water, one Japanese and one Chinese pilot each. Up in the sky, the Japanese planes continue to tangle with the Chinese, but at this point, with Janice and Tarin's intervention, the battle is quickly turning in favor of the Japanese. The Chinese squadrons have already lost roughly a quarter of their numbers, but they don't show any signs of giving up. A pair of J-7s doggedly pursue an F-15J, and their combined storm of cannon fire forces it disengage from the battle, one of its engines belching ugly black smoke.

"Sir, permission to engage the enemy." Euclid speaks up, her bow already drawn and ready to fire.

"Are you sure?" You raise an eyebrow. "That's pretty far."

"All right, you're clear to engage." You say. "But stick close to Jetstream and if you miss, you miss. DO NOT commit to a dogfight."

"Understood." Euclid says. You see her shoot ahead of your Ghost Hawk and she stops in the air, hovering as she aims her bow. Looking up, you see her tracking a rather pesky J-8 as it's being chased by an F-4J. The F-4 fires off a sidewinder, but it fails to acquire lock and it streaks off uselessly past the J-8. The Chinese plane takes the chance and performs a hard turn, causing the F-4J to overshoot. Thinking that it's in the clear, the J-8 levels out .

This proves to be his first and last mistake.

You can see Euclid's bow glow with magical energy as she tracks the J-8, and she finally releases. The arrow shoots out like a lightning bolt, so fast that you almost don't even see it. In an instant, the J-8 literally shatters like glass.

"Holy shit!" Hoskins yells. "What kind heat is she packing!?"

"That is the Nabeshima clan's specialty!" Jetstream chortles. "You will find no better archers in all of Japan!"

Euclid, for her part, doesn't say anything as she calmly draws a fresh arrow and nocks is. Whatever she may be, she is at least focused and professional where it counts. Another arrow snaps a J-7 in half.

(cont)
>>
>>32953471
Suddenly, your radio buzzes in quick and frenzied Japanese.

"Goddamn!" You wince. "What the hell is that?"

"The Chinese are sending in another wave of fighters." Jetstream says. "Another two squadrons. At least. The IJN is routing some ships and planes to assist, but I'm not sure if they'll get here in time, or if it'll even be enough."

"Shouldn't your fighters retreat?" You ask.

"Of course not." Jetstream chuckles. "We are the IJA! If we will stand and fight as long as we have the will and capacity to fight! If we let them through now, there is a very real chance they will reach the Home Islands, and nobody wants to bear that shame!"

"That's crazy..." You scowl. That means they would easily be facing 4-1 odds here.

And in the distance, you can already make out the hazy silhouettes of dozens of hostile planes, ready for a fight. You could always pull back, but that would also mean pulling your witches, who have so far been proving to be the great equalizer in this fight...

"Janice, Tarin, how are you doing on magic?" You ask.

"We fight for a bit longer." Janice assures you. "At the very least until reinforcements arrive."

"I'm still active." Tarin says simply.

"All right." You nod. "Jetstream, Euclid, you're free to engage the enemy at your own discretion. The Ghost Hawk is going to be pulling back, so it's all going to be on you. If you feel you can't keep fighting, then disengage no matter what. That's a direct order to all of you, got it?"
