Your name is Tsubasa Campbell, and you have due to a freak accident obtained powers that set you far and apart from the rest of humanity and that have freed you from the prison that was your own under developed and stunted body. Now you are growing into the person you always wished you could be, but haunted with growing frequency by your past.

Perhaps the greater awareness you have obtained functions in your sleep, and gave you a dream in the form of one of your less pleasant memories. The events of that dream are too eerily relevant to recent events to be mere coincidence, nor is the near to crying woman gripping your shoulders while you stand naked, your towel knocked to the ground unintentionally by Hanako Yukimura’s explosive entrance into your small apartment.

Her sister and your friend, Hitomi, is apparently engaged to the son of a local Yakuza family. You have strong suspicions that these events are tied to actions taken in your reckless and delinquent youth.

>Try to calm her down, sit down with her, ask her to slow down and tell you what’s going on. What do you say?
>Have some shame, shriek because you are way over exposed and even if you are proud of your new body, this is very embarrassing. Oh god, is the door still open?
>Distract Hanako from being upset before talking to her with...with...uh, oh! Hey, she’s totally into you and you’re naked in front of her. Point that out to her.

“Hanako, calm down. You’re barely coherent,” you say softly as you lay hands on her own shoulders in return, kick your door shut as you turn her into the apartment, and lead her to the cushioned seating of your living space.

The apartment remains humid and is heavy with the scent of your sweat and earlier arousal, perhaps more so considering you’re standing stark naked. Sitting her down you remove your hands from her shoulders and look at the still calmly down woman. She remains out of breath; that and being on the verge of tears has her hyperventilating, her chest heaving with each quick breath. Turning to grab a robe, you toss it over your shoulders and begin your queries.

“When is the wedding? Have they had the meeting of the two parties? I need details,” you intone with worry, keeping your own guilt deep below the surface, as you grab a robe from your ope

Hanako sniffles and wrings the end of her blue skirt. Tighter than the things she casually wears. That and the blouse and handkerchief are probably part of her office’s uniform or dress code. She calms herself and stares down into her lap before speaking, catching her breath and herself.

“They went to meet with a matchmaker today. Grandfather was very solemn about the whole affair, like he was dreading today. Hitomi, Hitomi wouldn’t talk to me last night and wouldn’t look at me today. I found out when I got home from work...and...I ran here. They haven’t set the date yet, but the engagement is official. It’s Dojima, she’s marrying a Dojima. They’ve been bad news in this town for decades, I-”

She shakes and clenches her eyes shut.

“Its my fault,” she chokes, “It has to be,”

>How is this your fault?

>There’s plenty of blame to go around, don’t feel so bad.

Wrapping Hanako in the fluffy arms of your robe, you pull her close to you and lay her now crying forehead against your collarbone. You shush her and hold her there before drying. This was your fault, this was all your fault. You, Hitomi, that guy whose name you never learned and many others would have suffered if not for Kaito’s intervention that day. You had to prove yourself, so you stood up to the Yakuza without a plan.

Being stupid and young does that. Hitomi was angry, for her own reasons, you were just a punk. The anger and disappointment whelms beneath your skin and you feel the red and black boil beneath the surface. It gives you a comforting warmth, and Hanako falls deeper into your hug and squeezes you back.

“How is this your fault?” you ask, already suspecting her part in all of this.

She sniffles and pulls back from you, her nose a bit runny and her eyes puffy. There is guilt that mirrors what you are hiding, but plain to see upon her face.

“When I was younger,” she sniffles, “I did something stupid. I did a lot of things stupid,”

She wrenches away from you and lays her hands on her own shoulders, hugging herself. The Daily Metro logo on her tied handkerchief falls neatly over where her arms intersect.

“I used to get high, a lot,” her eyes lower to the ground, “Nothing hard, at least not intentionally. It was back in highschool. I had a bad trip, I bought something that was laced and wound up in the hospital. A few days later, I heard Grandpa and Hitomi arguing when they thought I was asleep. She’d rounded up some people to help her drive the dealer out of town...but he was one of the Dojima Clan’s dogs. I don’t know what happened, but they tried to hurt Hitomi for standing up to them. For standing up for me,”

She’s shaking.
>>
>>32959252
“That’s who she’s marrying now, the new head of the Dojima clan. That’s why Grandpa was angry back then. It’s all my fault. Hmph, world goes on, right? One day monsters fight on the beach, the next day the Yakuza are back to business as usual,”

She whips her head up and breathes in sharply. The sudden stiffness melts with her exhalation as she slumps back into your couch.

“Tsubasa-chan, thanks for listening. This is hard, but thank you for- wait, you weren’t wearing that robe when I got here,” she says in sudden wonder despite tear streaks staining her cheeks.

“No, I was wearing a towel, but you knocked that off of me when you barreled in,”

She blushes a moment and turns away, a lingering aura of sadness and upset that keeps her usual energy and quick wittedness in check.

“People make bad decisions when they’re young,” you huff back into the couch beside her, “Believe me. Don’t beat yourself up over this, she’s alive, therefore there’s hope,”

Hanako seems to have calmed down, the panic that drove her here seeps away. You’ve managed to calm her down, but what next. Hitomi can’t be happy about getting hitched to some thug? They way she was talking to you before...she damn well has known this whole time. Kaito too, probably.

Well, you won’t begrudge Kaito for keeping secrets for his friends. That would be a bit hypocritical.

Still, you stood up to the Dojima Family once before and almost died for your troubles. Not to mention the others who would have alongside you. They can make a person disappear if you try to stand against them. Sell women into prostitution abroad, shoot rival gang leaders in retaliation, they can act like they’re above the law. You’re just one woman, how could you help your friend?

“Can I stay here, for a little while?” she leans forward, seeming so much smaller than she normally does.

The stray glint of metal from beneath your shoe rack by the door catches your eye as you dumbly nod to her, lost in thought. It is the flattened slug that slid off of your face and rolled away when that man representing your ‘clergy’ tested your mettle.

Right, you aren’t the punk kid who got their ass beat. You aren’t the four foot tall shrimp who could never grow up, who pretended to be a boy, who was covered in scar tissue and always felt like an outsider.

“Thanks, Tsubasa,” she sighs before a slight gurgling tremor sounds from her middle and she blushes, “eh heh, I skipped lunch today. Is it alright if-”

“Yeah, fridge is open,” you smile to yourself.

You are bulletproof. You are mighty. You can break the sound barrier. You can break orbit, theoretically. Leaning forward and crossing your hands over one another in thought you tick through every way you could strong arm the Dojima Clan out of town and prevent Hitomi’s marriage. It’s probably wildly irresponsible to do, but fuck responsibility, you killed a giant monster with your bare hands.

Let them fire. Let them swagger. Let them threaten.

So I think we shall have a short intermission here while I attend these things what need my attention before I return. Normally this would mark where I would be done for today, but once I return I think there is more quest to be run.

In the meantime, feel free to discuss topics of how you'd like to advance Tsubasa in the future, what to do about ongoing plot threads, and how you could make use of the narrative control sometimes handed to you with a blinking sign.

no problem

in regards to the yaks, any plans on how to do this without killing anyone?
I'm partial to sending a message by trashing their headquarters, while making a bonfire of any cash/drugs on site and grabbing sensitive documents. But if they connect that to the wedding Hitomi risks reprisal.
Alternatively, if they don't remember our face, we could try going the social route and conning the groom into getting locked up.
>>
>>32962049
We could potentially use Mori Micro to financially attack the Dojima Gumi's legitimate and semi-legitimate operations, and pressure the Metropolitan Police Department to take control of the local police's organized crime division and put pressure on them from that front.
The MPD is bigger, badder, and more willing to accept collateral damage in their bid to close high-profile cases than local police departments; it may be useful to bring them in.
>>
>>32962049
Well if they DON'T connect it to the wedding, what possible message of use could they take from said trashing/bonfire?

“Yeah, I’m fine. I have to get dressed and step out for a bit. The sanctuary of the house of Campbell is upon you,” you smile as you get up and draw the privacy curtain to the entrance hallway and fish out a fresh pair of panties from your closet, “Have your fill, and if there’s anything left over after you’ve made dinner, then I’ll have at it,”

“HEY!” she shouts from beyond the curtain.

You poke your head between the two sheets of the curtain and see she’s only superficially angry. You grin wide and her expression softens as she wipes the streaks from her cheeks. She sits there a moment and you wait, expecting her to have some snappy follow up. There isn’t one.

“Thanks...for everything,” she sighs.

Nodding, you duck back into the hallway and get dressed. Simple, casual clothes. Black jeans, white tank top, black button down blouse left open. Finding your shoes, you bid Hanako feel better while you’re out and jog a short distance from your home.

There, you stop dead in the pedestrian road. Breathing deeply you let your senses stretch out in the twilight, searching and reaching for Hitomi. They snake through the streets and find no sign of your friend in the family home that Hanako ran from. No sign of her in any of your usual hangouts. After a moment you think you might be slipping, before your find her in a park.
>>
>>32965139
Taking off into a run, you absorb the sweat still on your skin and the oil in your hair. It occurs to you that the only reason you have to shower anymore is that it feels good. Pumping with each effortless step, you come to the small park on the hill, and coursing through the foot paths and trees, you find Hanako sitting on a bench and watching the in progress sunset.

The normally prim and poised girl is a ragdoll. She is wearing a very traditional kimono but her hair has become erratic despite the combs and pins that probably held it in a lovely pattern earlier. She’s leaning forward, angry and defeated.

What kind of life does she expect going forward. To be feared by people? To be at the mercy of her husband? To lose her freedom to a man she probably despises, to sit by as he continues to get away with the same evils that once hurt her own family.

You can feel it from here, at the base of the hill. You can feel Hitomi’s suffering.

There is a certain solemnity to the scene before you, and despite yourself you determine to keep it in some way solemn. Shoving your hands in the too small pockets of your jeans. Women’s jeans annoy you, the materials are usually too flimsy and almost no space for pockets. God help you if the world thinks it can force you to start carrying around a purse because you don’t have functional pockets anymore.

Calmly and openly you walk up the hill to the bench as sit in it, taking in the beauty of the sunset. Glancing to the side, you see that the much shorter woman has take notice of you. Your guilt wracks at you, the memory of that day. Trying to throw yourself and your own life away to protect a perfect stranger whose involvement you enabled.

She knows that you know the truth the moment she sees your face. The worry that she had been harboring gives way to confusion at your presence and then understanding as you look away from her, the two of you sit there as the sun dips beneath the inland and darkness takes the sky.

“How are you doing?” you ask innocently.

“I’m not sure.” she huffs and sits a bit straighter. Adopting the mannerisms you know her by, “How long?”

Is she compensating for something now? Does she not want anyone to see her like this?

“Since Hanako told me why you were getting married,”

Nodding, she begins putting her hair back into place.

“Why’d you come here?” her questions are soft and weakening.

“I feel guilty, and I’m worried about my friend,” you tilt your head to the side and run a hand through your long and vibrant red hair.

“I meant how did you find me here,” she huffs, “I know why you came to see me. I am not an idiot, Campbell-san,”

“Didn’t you hear, I’m part blood hound,” you shrug, “Your sister is hanging out at my place right now. She was too...I dunno...upset? Too upset to be at home,”
>>
>>32966573
“I don’t blame her,” she stares ahead, “for running or for what happened back then. I just blame myself,”

Her eyes slide over to you and you meet her gaze. She said that last part with conviction and certainty. She wants you to know that she doesn’t blame you, Hanako, or anyone else other than herself. She might blame the Yakuza, or she’s resigned to their existence seemingly above the law. You are not sure which.

And again the two of you sit in the night for a short while, only the streetlamps above providing light as the city comes to life in the distance. She rises and starts for the footpath.

“I’ll be heading home now. Thank you for coming to see me,” she moves with grace and grim determination, “We’ll have your makeup lessons tomorrow afternoon. Bring Hanako home with you when you come. I’m of the mind to ask you to be in my bridal party. Yuichi,” she spits his name, “seems set on a western style wedding. ”Is there anything I can do to help or try to get you out of this?” you lay your hands on your knees and look at her, pleadingly, “You want out of this, right?"

You can’t quite see her face in the dark, but her rigidity somehow...increases? Her voice is sharp, exacting, and furious.

“How many times do you have to try to play the hero? You aren’t invulnerable. One of these days if you carry on like this, it’ll stick,” she turns on her sandaled heel and marches off into the dark, “

You are left alone with that as she goes off into the night.

There is so much you could say, so much you could regret saying. You let Hitomi walk off into the dark before rising and heading home. You shouldn’t leave Hanako alone all night. You’ve got time to think things through, you’ve probably got time to go ahead and figure out a way to derail the wedding.

Maybe play ball with Mori Micro and get their help as an economic weapon against their little Yakuza gang. Or, and this thought fills you with a certain trilling of sexual thrill, you could lay waste to his gang and show him what happens to people who hurt your friends.

Yuichi Dojima. You remember his face from back then. The smooth skin on your thigh where his thrown knife landed so long ago thrums in memory. Doesn’t matter tonight. What matters is comforting the friend who’ll let you.

It isn’t a long walk back to your apartment. It will be good to be home and see what Hanako di-

No. Oh no. Not that.

Your kitchenette.

Your poor defenseless kitchen.

Hanako sits at your table in the living area with a half finished plate of a burnt omelette, with another one of equal poor skill with your name written on it in ketchup. Numerous snack wrappers sit empty around her, and she has the good decency to appear embarrassed.

Your kitchen is a mess. Your frying pan might be burnt, there are grease stains over the stove top and floor, and there are egg yolk residue everywhere...did she try to take steel wool to your frying pan?!

She’s sipping one of the beers you bought yesterday. There is another can empty beside her. A grain of rice on her cheek fall as she smiles at you through her blushing.

“Tsubasa-chan, welcome back!” she wipes her cheek with a napkin, “was everything okay? I missed you,”

Its been a rough night. You close the door and saunter over to the low table and sit down across from Hanako who is all smiles and still blushing. Grinning madly she laughs nervously as you split the wooden chopsticks and have at the meal. True to form, Hanako is probably buzzed less than two drinks in.

“I had a few snacks, but then I thought it might be nice to make dinner for myself,” she looks away from you and brings a hand up to her face in an attempted demure fashion, “and then you. Sorry about the mess,”

It really doesn’t suit her. Luckily the omelette isn’t terrible. Its dry, but it’s okay. A little bit touching that she put so much effort into this...even if your kitchen looks like she did it during some kind of seizure or earthquake.

“It’s fine. I’ll worry about it later. You know for someone so keen on femininity lessons you-”

“I was going to teach you how to act like a woman and use your womanly charms,” she says haughtily lifting her beer for a sip, “I am a young woman of privilege, cooking has never been one of my strengths,”

You gaze over the sizable supply of wrappers for your various snacks and sweets while enjoying your own meal. The outer edges of the omlette are definitely dry, but the interior is moister and much fluffier. The rice is a bit mushy, but its okay with a liberal application of soy sauce.

“There were plenty more snacks. You didn’t have to go through all the trouble to cook for both of us,”

“It wasn’t just about being hungry,” her eyes soften as she sets the can down, “I wanted to do something nice for you. I’ve been stressed and worried, about Hitomi and other things,”

“Problems at work?” you lean over, most of your meal gone to your quick appetite.

She stares at you, incredulously for a second before taking a long drag of her drink and narrowing her gaze at you. Setting it down and exhaling she crosses her arms.
>>
>>32969521
“You’ve come a long way since this all started. How much bigger are you now? Your bust is bigger than mine, and I’ve put on stress weight,” she levels an accusatory finger at you, “You’ve clearly caught up and overshot where you were stuck...so…”

Hanako screws her eyes shut and shakes her head, puffing her cheeks in frustration and balling her fists and sending them to her lap.

“So,” softer this time, “Do you know whether or not you can return my feelings, or do you still need more time?”

>”I do need more time. Okay?”
>”I think so, but I’m not rushing into anything,”
>”I think so, and I’d like to take that step forward with you,”

Swallowing the last bite from your plate, you look away and take a deep breath. Why does this have to feel so hard? You could always just...not tell her. No. She deserves better than that.

“Before we have this conversation, we need to talk about something,” she seems a bit confused and reaches for her drink to hide behind it like a shield or teddy bear. Her cheeks puffed in frustration deflate and you have her rapt attention, “Your story earlier sounded...familiar, I was gone to confirm it. That day, it wasn’t just Hitomi who did something stupid,”

She sits through it all. The masked girl’s story, handing her the baseball bat and goading her. The drug dealer. The blood, reprisal, violence, cost. Your offer, pled and screamed against them in a final push for violence before you were silenced with a knife. The resolve of the girl.

Kaito. God bless Kaito. You never knew what happened after you woke up. Just accepted that no one was dead and…this guilt. This guilt is your own. Hanako shouldn’t try to shoulder it all.

You are silent. Quiet in your home. You can’t look Hanako in the eye.

Closing your own, you exhale a breath you didn’t know you were holding. The sound of plates being slid catches your ear and the table your hands rest upon shudders.

When they open again, Hanako is close, her face just inches from your own. Her expression soft and mournful. Her eyes wide and pleading, searching for something. There is an acceptance of your words, a willingness to share her burdens, and perhaps in turn try to shoulder your own. She is right in front of you, having crawled across the table.

Those big eye of her’s seem to find something, and a hopeful but sad smile stretches across her features as she leans forward. Whatever she wants, whatever she’s taken from this seems to have found purchase. They have found hope.

I still would have preferred to push her away, because she's drunk, and even though she's already said she wants it when she was sober, I don't think right now is a good time.

You raise your hands from the table and grip Hanako’s shoulders gently, holding her in place. Leaning forward, you deepen the kiss. It makes you feel good, in gives you a certain sense of peace and light headedness while also arcing the same warmth throwing your strength around gives you. It grants you that thrill, that small burning want.

There is a strained moan that comes from neither of you, it is unimportant.

You find the sensation of your fingers against the fabric of her work blouse not entirely to your liking and slide your hands to her neck to untie the handkerchief beneath her collar. Her own hands leave the table, one cupping your cheek and the snaking beneath your open button down and sliding one of the shoulders of your tank top down your arm. She pulls you up as she leans back and rights herself, her knees resting just off the center of the table toward you.

The sound of wrenching echoes in what might as well be 100 miles away.

Your lips remain intertwined, her tongue slowly probing out from between her own and into your’s as you work your way down the buttons of her blouse slowly while her handkerchief drifts to the floor.

CRACK!

Your eyes snap open and both you and Hanako squeak in surprise. The table legs closest to you give out, sending the softer woman into you and causing you to topple onto your back in surprise with her on top of you. The two of you fell short of taking out the TV cart. She has all but fallen out of her now exposed bra, pressing against your own full chest. Though you are bigger and firmer, she is soft and warm.

“itte, that hurts” she murmurs.

Her eyes flutter open from the sudden shock and fear with a sudden guilt. She’s blushing but suddenly alert in the way that you know an unpleasant surprise can be sobering. A sly grin creases across her face as she adjusts her hands against the floor on either side of your head.
>>
>>32971596

“My my,” she laughs trying to salvage the situation, “I’ve pinned the champion. I guess that means in a ten count I win the belt,”

Nope.

You grab her wrists and carefully roll to the side, away from the plates on the floor beside you and plant your knees firmly on either side of Hanako’s hips while you hoist her wrists in the air. Were your legs not quite so long, this would have been a difficult feat.

“Uaah, no fair!” she pouts.

“I think that’s as far as we take things tonight,” you sigh and stand, helping her up as well, “but we’ve got a few things to clean up,”

“Okay, fine,” she sighs in dejection.

“And we need to figure out how to get Hitomi out of her engagement,” you groan, “even if she is too proud to accept any help,”

“Oh, that’s probably going to be the hardest part,” Hanako sighs as she proceeds to rebutton her blouse.

Later in the evening after a quickly exhausting round of cleaning, Hanako is fast asleep sitting on your couch. You are there too, lying back with your head resting on her lap. Her fingers sifted through your ruby locks. Its...comfortable. You had been drifting in and out of sleep, until something sounded.

It came from nowhere and everywhere, all at once. Music. A choir your voice and the millions of voices suddenly straining inside you south to join. Every screen in your apartment flickered to life for an instant and you could have sworn you saw searching eyes before they snapped back into the darkness.

Fingers glide above the keyboard, finding purchase with the ivory keys a song erupts and the microscopic devices suffusing his being sing in response. The song sounds, and the choir sings alongside him as he plays. Candlelight flickers in the green of his visor.

Their song is one. The machines in their bodies acting in concert, reaching the heights of the cavern.

The earth shakes. Machines of the old, from beyond the stars join the song.

Ancient eyes open.
