The only thing you’ve ever really wondered sometimes is if your dad is really dead or not. “Well. This isn’t really my future or fortune or whatever,” you say, “but can you see if my dad’s dead?”

“Not with question like that,” says Ms. Song. “Make question about your fortune!”

You think about how to solve this conundrum. Wait – you think you’ve got it. All you have to do is think like a fortune cookie. “Will I ever see my dad again?” you ask.

Ms. Song almost buries her face in the teacup, she’s looking so close at it. “Mm. You want truth hard or with padding?” Her tone is one of clinical detachment.

“Just. Whatever, I guess?” you ask.

Song writes a note in her little book. “You will never see your father again,” she says. “Next question when you think of one.”

Welp. You feel a kind of chapter of your life shut on itself. It’s not nice news, but it kind of helps put it to rest. Whatever happened to him, at least you know he’s not lost or like, trying to find you or something. He’s just gone, and you can accept that. You roll your shoulders and try to work away the heaviness that’s settled on them. Maybe your next question should be not so dramatic.
>>
>>32964328

“Oh man,” you say, laughing a little bit. “This is a dumb question, but I’m totally asking anyway. Am I like. Ever going to fall in love?” you ask. “Or uh. What if somebody falls in love with me? Is it going to be like, a mutual thing or is it always going to be love triangles or whatever?” Oh man. This is great. (-5 Stress: 73/100)

“Stop asking stupid question! Make question easy to read!” Song scolds you.

Right. “Yeah, I can do that,” you say. “Um. So. Like. Will the grand river… take me through… uh. To… meet the course of another that’s like, hot, but, also, you know, is okay with who I am?”

“The grand river flows in myserious ways,” says Ms. Song. “The path of two meets as one for time, and then current change. For better or worse nothing again is same.” She squints at some detail that she overlooked. “And he is very good looker, mmm yes he is, girl, you getting better question now. Ask if you should get tan first, maybe it is prerequisite.”

You pump a fist in triumph. Yes! You knew you had it in you. And also, you know future guy dude will be hot for sure now. This is turning from a horrible experience to a mediocre experience, and fast. (-3 Stress: 70/100)
>>
>>32964340

“Okay, I’ve got another thing,” you say. “Is… is Isaac right?” you ask. About what, you’re not sure, but maybe a mystical Chinese woman can help you out here.

“Is this Isaac’s fortune?” asks Ms. Song. “I don’t think so!”

“Fine,” you say. “Is Isaac… should I listen to Isaac?”

“Hmm,” says Song. “Strong mind and heart of might carry light through cloudless night,” she says.

“What’s that mean?” you ask.

“I read tell fortune, I don’t interpret fortune! That three thousand dollar extra!”

“Geeze, whatever,” you say, feeling kind of violated for some reason.

“Okay, last question,” she says. “Make it good one, okay?”

You think about a couple of things. You’d like to know where the landwell is that Meckor’s going to bring his demon army through, but you figure any answer you get will only prove ironically helpful after you’ve already found the landwell. After that, though, there’s only one thing that you really kind of want to know. “This is kind of a yes or no question, I guess, but, can you like, just give it your best shot?” you ask.

“Tell me question and I tell you answer,” says Song.

“Is my sister… is Nevada proud of me?”

Ms. Song looks at you, and sees the earnestness in your expression. She doesn’t answer immediately. Instead, she looks back down at the dregs of the tea leaves. “Twin paths, starting so similarly, are so different yet – split asunder under moon light, one given dark road of tale untold, other great rest one thousand fold unknown. Close to heart and name cherished for all steps till trial of separation she ends in death.” She pauses. “Mm now that is good fortune,” says Song.

“It was a dumb question,” you say, feeling crestfallen.

“Maybe, but maybe it is good question too,” Ms. Song says. She starts packing up her tea stuff. “Okay, you are good to go now. I need to talk with Marshal Hallow,” she says. “Go fetch Isaac, girl.”

Yeah. 'Close to heart and name cherished for all steps' pretty clearly means that she loved us every minute of every day while we were together with her. Which makes sense, because she's our fucking twin. But 'till trial of separation she ends in death' either mean she died when we were separated, or - and this is the worse operation - that we're separated right now, but if that trial of separation ends, she'll die, likely by our hand.

Either way, it's a fucking downer of a fortune.

>other great rest
the other, Nevada, dies ("big sleep")
>one thousand fold unknown
death is a mystery/what lies beyond the veil and so forth
>>
>>32965236
Alternatively, you can read the trial of separation line as her being dead, and we won't see her again til we join her.
Fucking fortunes.
>>
>>32965279
Yeah. The fortune basically says that she's either already dead or, if she's alive, one of us will die when we meet again. I'm leaning towards her being dead. It would just be even fucking sadder if one of us is doomed to die once we meet again.
>>
>>32965336
It was a 4th wall thing.

Nevada is the one who doesn't have her story told. The dark road thing also fits in with the name mum gave her.

Sierra is the one stuck with anons in her head. It said that "great rest one thousand fold unknown", meaning that Sierra gets no rest; she's the mc and constantly has to do shit.
>>
>>32965362
Or it could be saying that we're the one keeping Nevada close to our heart, and cherishing her, and one way or another when we die we'll be with her.
>>
>>32965409
I honestly have no idea how you came to that conclusion

>>
>>32965409
so basically, fortunes are cryptic bullshit that could mean anything depending on how you try to read them

sounds about right
>>
>>32965362
>>32965441
Or it could even be that when we meet her again it will be under dangerous circumstances and one of us will die to protect the other.

This shit was left open for a reason.
>>
>>32965463
>trying to interpret fortunes while being bad at abstract / magical thinking
git gud
>>
>>32965514
Interpreting 'Great rest one thousand fold unknown' as person will get no rest makes no sense whatsoever. The only thing abstract about it was how someone took a bunch of words that have nothing to do with what you said they mean and tried to justify it.
>>
>>32964961
>Marhsal Hallow. Marshal… Mallow. Marshmallow.
"Isaac Hallow is a Marshmallow!"
>>
>>32965409
Except if we're not breaking the 4th wall, it's more appropriate to say Sierra is the one walking a dark road, since she's been a nobody ever since her dad left. "Great rest one thousand fold unknown" is hard to parse, but it'll probably make sense later.
>>
>>32965597
so this is what happens when our sanity drops
>>
>>32965560
I honestly don't see what's so hard to get about that.

"Great" is just dramatic fortunespeak for "meaningful". "One thousand fold" is just a long-winded way of saying "very" and is modifying "unknown". The implied verb is "is" because Chinaspeak. Saying that something is unknown to a person is a common way of saying that they will not experience that thing.

Really, it's not even that abstract.

[Person] will experience no meaningful rest [as a result of the path they walk].
>>
>>32965677
SAN loss is fun.

At least when it's still above 80 anyway. Probably still mostly ok into the 70s.

Do not want to see what happens when it gets into the 50s. Below 50 is probably a mighty nasty dangerzone.
>>
>>32965560
Not the guy you responded to, but I can see how he got there, with rest being one thousand fold unknown. It could also be that the great rest is death and whichever one it applies to will survive many times when they otherwise probably shouldn't have. Or be taken more generally as a life with a lot of hardship and troubles.

Looking at our Mother's description of us and our sister may be helpful for parsing this.

>“When I look upon you, my Nydalis, you are a more beautiful, more exquisite shade of night than the farthest reaches of the void.”

>“And when I cast my gaze on you, my Sakheris, you are the brilliant blazing fury of the stars, unquenchable, unconquerable, and indomitable.”

This seems to fit pretty well with Nevada given dark road of tale untold, it fits with the darkness and distance evoked in it, and us great rest one thousand fold unknown matches with being unstoppable blazing fury.
>>
>>32965776
odd thing is when we started this we had sanity at max yet i know we lost some a few sessions ago how do we get it back?

“Fetch Marshal Hallow,” you say, just to experiment with the sound of it. “Fetch… Marshal Mallow,” you say. “Marshmallow,” you finish. What. You can’t even laugh. “My brain hurts,” you say.

“Your brain has no nerve feeling,” says Song. “You are just wacky teen girl. Now get out and do what I tell you already!”

You feel too fried mentally and emotionally to make much of a counterattack, so you just stand and go find Isaac, who’s flipping through a heavy, leather bound tome marked with the yin yang symbol thing. By the looks of things, it has lots and lots of pictures. You walk up behind him.

“Ms. Song will see you now,” you say, feeling tired.

Isaac jumps when you break the silence. “Oh. How’d it go?” he asks, turning and looking at you. He’s got his aviators off and in his pocket. “So you told her about you being hellborn,” he notes.

You look at yourself. Right, don’t look like this. You close your eyes for a minute and fix your appearance. “Yep,” you say. “I uh. Got the job too so. It’s official?”

Isaac smiles. He starts to kind of go in for a congratulatory half-hug thing, but you kind of step away and halt the process before it’s begun. You don’t want to deal with that right now. “Right, sorry,” he says, as if reading your mind. “But that’s great news! I’m glad you made it,” he says. “Can we do one of these?” he asks, holding up a fist.
>>
>>32966079

It’s hard to keep your words together. Maybe it’s because you’re not talking to Ms. Song anymore. “Man you’re… you’re so lame,” you say. But you bump his fist anyway.

He beams like its some kind of victory. “All right. I’ll be back in a while. Rowan’s still wandering around here somewhere. I’ll let you break the news to her,” he says. He heads off then, toward the back of the shop.

You wander through knickknacks and curios, some of which have exorbitant prices marked on their tags. But who knows. If that little tiny jar marked Dew From Mt. Jiuhua is the real deal, maybe it really is worth 899 dollars.

You come onto an isle with Rowan, who is distracted by the short, kind of weird sword with a curved tip she’s got in one hand. She’s s moving through some techniques while she spins the blade around. She’s being slow and careful, probably so she doesn’t break anything.

One of the floorboards creeks beneath you, and in a flash, Rowan replaces the sword in its velvet red display case and pretends like she’s reading the little inscription on the plaque before it, even though it’s in Chinese. She gives you a furtive glance, but when she sees it’s you, she lets out a sigh of relief and walks over. “Thought you were Ms. Song,” she says, smiling.
>>
>>32966100

“Heh. Nooope,” you say, smiling. But then you wince. It’s pretty damn bright in here.

Rowan sees something’s up. “Are you all right?” she asks, turning her head slightly and taking a step forward to examine you up close. “You look pale. Er. Than usual.”

>Not sure that would really help, we're pretty comfortable with the dark.
I think he meant it as more of a way to prevent us from strangling someone in our sleep. We can control all the shadows within our general vicinity, which probably covers most of the house.
>>
>>32966461
The lights are not for our comfort here. They are more to stop us having shadows to unconsciously lash out with.

>>32966461
We should probably meditate tonight. We can only do it for an hour, but that'll drop stress by seven. We should probably upgrade this skill.
>>
>>32966479
Especially considering we become substantially more potent in ragemode. In fairness, we're supposedly a fair bit older than when we shredded stuff in our sleep and people tend to grow out of that sort of thrashing, but there's a risk that tonight will be unusually disturbed as we process a big lump of new stuff at once, so we may still flail a bit though I don't really expect it to be completely catastrophic if it even happens; at most we'll probably need to buy a new mattress and patch up the walls in our room. It's just best to be sure, really.

Rowan pointing out that your current mental status is effecting your outward appearance kicks some sense in through your teeth. You shake your head and get rid of some of the fogginess that’s crept in there. (+2 Sanity: 89/100)

“Bad headache,” you say. “Ms. Song knew some stuff about my mom I guess and… well I kind of remembered some stuff I don’t think I was supposed to remember.” You give Rowan the lowdown on what happened, including details about the Black Kingdom. You refrain from going into unnecessary detail about the incident, though.

“But you’re better now, right?” Rowan asks, sounding worried.

“I don’t think so. I mean. I feel kind of scrambled, but I think I’ll be okay later,” you say. “It was a little hard to talk after it happened, so if I like, say something stupid or that doesn’t really make sense, just, like, give me a free pass.”

Rowan snorts. “I give you free passes all the time already when it comes to you saying silly stuff.”

You smirk at her. “Well rev ‘em up those ones, because you might need a whole bunch of them before the night’s done,” you say.

“Duly noted,” says Ro. “How’d the interview go? Did she fire you when she saw you weren’t wearing a tie?”

“Nope,” you say, your smirk growing to a wide smile. “Get this. I was all like, check out my horns bitch, and then she’s all like, you get job, girl, go team. So I’ve got your job now too. I mean. Great news or greatest news?” you ask.
>>
>>32967241

“Awesome news,” Rowan says, almost glowing with happiness. “This is so cool. Now we’re like, official back-to-back crime fighting demon slayers,” she says.

“Hell yeah!” you say. You offer your fist, and Rowan bumps it. You don’t usually do this kind of thing, but Isaac just did it, so it’s kind of on your mind right now. Anyway. Ultimate superhero team is a go. (-5 Stress: 65/100) You withdraw from the confirmation of sweetness, and look at the sword Rowan was just playing with. “What’s up with that guy? You thinking of switching?”

“Nah, my sword’s way cooler. And it’s maaaagic,” she says mystically, waving her hands around.

“Maybe that sword’s magic too,” you say. “I think a lot of this crap is magic, actually.” You look around at all the mysterious curios in sight. So many curios.

“Well mine’s angel magic,” she says.

“Well my demon magic sword – uh, I mean, Zelathis, Lightning Sword has lightning. What’s yours even do anyway?” you ask. Though you’ve been testing your might against Ro’s formidable swordsmanship for weeks now, you’ve never seen her do anything flashy with it.

Rowan smirks. “It makes it so you always have solid footing,” she says. “You know. Besides cutting through hellish magic and monster hide.”

“Solid footing,” you say, looking now at the Chinese sword like it’s something you’d pick out of a cereal box and throw away.

“Rollerblades and swords don’t go together usually,” says Ro. “You know. Unless they’re magic swords.”

“Or magic rollerblades,” you say, your mind now filled with infinite possibilities. “By the way. Not to worry you or anything, but tonight, remind me to keep the lights on. Like. Everywhere.”

“What?”

“You know. Just in case,” you say cryptically.

--

The night didn’t turn out as bad as you feared. You felt a little better after meditating, though you did wind up having boat dream nightmares like, five times through the night. And, kind of embarrassing, you popped claws during the night and maybe shredded the sheets. Reeber didn’t seem to be bothered by it.

No one questioned you when you said he was spending the night with you, and you’re glad about it. Even Cass was a sport when you showed mentioned your bedding. She just kind of got it without you having to explain yourself. You figure she stuck Bed Bath and Beyond on her to-do list once you left for school.

Maybe the dreams are your subconscious warning you not to get too pushy with whatever it’s decided to hide in the vault. Maybe you don’t really want to know what happened that night. And maybe you can’t.

Anyway. School proves to be a welcome distraction, but the weight of Meckor’s currently un-foiled plans mingle with your odd headaches and short bursts of nonsensicality to keep you pretty heated up through most the day.

Borislav’s supposed to be coming down after school, and you’re going to ride around with him looking for landwells. It’s got you pretty excited, actually, seeing as you haven’t seen him in a week or so. Between your unspeakably bad Russian and his fledgling English, you think you might actually be able to have a real kind of conversation with the druid for the first time ever, today.

Stress: 48/100
Sanity: 91/100

It is lunchtime, it is Tuesday, and you are currently looking forward to a sweet Halloween rave party schedule for Friday and landwell hunting today. You are, as is your wont, with Ro & Co (though you would never say this out loud because geeze just think about it for a second). Your friends have noticed your fidgetiness, but thankfully you’ve been able to explain it as a bad cold. Hopefully it won’t last longer than a bad cold.

“Let’s just agree ahead of time now,” says Rowan, as you all walk to your usual location. “If there are drugs there – well okay, we all know there are going to be drugs there, we’re going to not take the drugs there.”

Vikrama laughs. “I’m not going through all the effort of making my costume fabulous just so I can get drugged up and forget all about it,” she says frankly.

“I wouldn’t risk mine to my brain on LSD,” says Baron. “It’s more expensive than I’d originally planned. I mean, it’s worth it, but still. It's not just a costume. It’s an investment.”
>>
>>32967303

You roll your eyes. You on drugs is probably not a good idea either, and man, you’ve seen what kind of bad stuff ‘the good stuff’ does to people first hand from when you helped sell the crap on streets, but still, coming up front and outright agreeing to a no-drug pact before a Halloween rave is about as square as you get.

“Sierra?” Ro asks, looking at you expectantly.

>Can’t knock it till you’ve tried it, am I right or am I right?
>I don’t think the world is ready for Sierra on crack
>I’m the only non-square left. Somebody’s got to be ambiguous or there’s no suspense.
>Okay, I may or may not have sold drugs at one time, but that doesn’t mean I ever uh. Indulged.

We should maybe think about something to soften the edges on our claws if we do end up doing this for halloween. That or keep the claws away. Lets not talk about our past of selling drugs, it's kind of a downer.
>>
“I’m the only non-square left,” you say meaningfully, with a tinge of sadness. “What fun’s anything going to be without somebody being ambiguous? I mean, where’s the suspense then?”

“D.A.R.E., Sierra,” Baron tells you.

“What’s that even stand for?” you ask. “Like. Drugs is the first word, right?”

“I think it’s Drugs Are Really….” Baron kind of trails off.

“Exciting?” Vikrama prompts.

“Egregious,” Rowan chips in.

“Kids these days don’t know what egregious means,” says Vikrama.

“Educational. Look, I can play this game too,” you say.
>>
>>32967881

“That’s right, Sierra,” says Baron, nodding as if you have just dispensed wisdom. “Just remember, Drugs are Really Educational. They will educate you in all the worst things imaginable, so not even once!”

“Nice turn around,” says Rowan. “Ten points to Gryphindor. But Sierra. Seriously, don’t do drugs.”

You laugh it off. “World’s not ready for Sierra on crack,” you say, more or less reassuringly. “I’ve seen people punch through windows on that stuff and not even flinch.”

“As in, you have actually seen somebody do that?” Vikrama asks, shocked. “What secret life have you been living, darling?”

“Just life before you guys got me down,” you joke. Shootin’ the breeze. Mmm hmm. (-3 Stress: 45/100)

A familiar figure in dark colors catches your attention. You see Moriah in her usual location looking kind of gloomy, as usual. You’ll see her at art class later, but something’s not quite right. “So uh…” you trail off, your brain having already left to take action before you do. “Drugs are bad. Got it. I’ll see you later, gotta check up on something,” you say, excusing yourself. You walk over to Moriah and sit down next to her.

She doesn’t seem to notice you, so you venture a hand out and lay it on her shoulder. Like, you don’t like getting touchy with anybody, but so long as you’re the toucher and not the touch-ee, it’s more or less okay.

She turns slightly to look at you. Her eyeshadow is all running down her face. Man, this is like, sad for you to be seeing this crap. (+2 Stress: 47/100)

“H-hello, Sierra,” she says shakily, carefully wiping her face so as to not smear makeup everywhere.

You’re not really good with helping people with feelings. That’s one thing guys have over girls, at least, is that they don’t have feelings maybe. “Uh. What’s wrong?” you ask lamely.

“It’s really stupid,” says Moriah. “Forget it.”

“Yeah that’s like, never happening?” you say. “Talk to me.”

“Just some idiots,” she says dismissively. “I was minding my own business and they just… started bothering me. And I asked them to go away, and they didn’t listen.”

After a moment, Moriah manages to compose herself well enough to speak again. “And when I did, they just… they just ran off with it,” she says miserably. “I don’t even know who they were, Sierra.”

You scowl. This is… this is reprehensible. Like. That’s the word to describe this right now. Repre-fucking-hensible.

“It’s not so bad,” says Moriah, reasoning with herself. “Maybe they’ll leave it someplace and it’ll get in the lost and found. Let’s… would you come down with me? I’ll report it missing right now.”

>You. Yeah sure. Let’s take care of that right now together.

We should get teachers involved just to make sure there are as many lasting consequences as possible, but go after them ourselves to minimize the time they have to damage it if they're being top-tier cunts. We only need to use tricks like sap will and "gentle" pressure on people like this, so we won't be at risk of getting in trouble for fighting. Having witnesses of good repute to back us up might be a good idea to be safe though.

Our reaction speeds and general fight-skills are so good that we really shouldn't have to fight the kids at all, we should be able to more or less dance around anything they can throw at us. Maybe we might have to twist out of a hold at most, but whatever.

The worst we might have to do is use sap will to shut them the hell down if they're about to break anything, but that doesn't leave any evidence or lasting damage so who cares.

You stand up. “I won’t hurt anyone if I don’t have to,” you say flatly. “And if I get hurt by those idiots, I fucking swear I will eat my jacket.”

You walk off like it’s nobody’s business, because the only person whose business it is is you. You stalk the school at speed, checking every nook and corner. You are on the hunt and you will have blood. Or like. Figurative blood. Literal blood is not in the game plan.

You cover half the school with no results. And then on your way to check the gym, you walk by Ro and buds where they’re sitting.

“Hey Sierra,” says Rowan. “What’s up?”

“Such determination. She looks like she’s on a quest,” says Vikrama. “Are you on a quest, Sierra?”

“I am a fucking quest right now,” you say, your voice tense and low with anger.

“Okay, what?” Baron asks.

“Beatrice is what,” you say, coming to a halt before the usual table. “She’s what out of chances. I’m going to go kick her ass. You want in?” This last question is directed at Rowan.

Baron and Vikrama look from you to her.

“You’re… being really serious right now,” says Baron. “This can’t be a good idea.”

“What did she do this time?” Rowan asks, her expression stern.

“She’s screwing around with Moriah,” you say. “Like. Coercing somebody to coerce somebody to coerce somebody. She’s gone insane with this Inception BS, it’s getting too deep. I’m like, going to seriously break her legs or something.” You probably won’t break her legs or something.

Rowan shakes her head. “I’m going with Baron on this one. It’s a bad idea, whatever she did,” she says. “You’ll get in serious trouble if you go after her like this.”

“Well they’ll get in serious trouble too if they weasel out,” you counter. “They’re not going to say anything – Beatrice isn’t going to risk getting expelled if all she cares about is college. So are you coming or not? She was a bitch to you first, as far as I’m concerned you deserve to throw the first punch.”

“Even winning a fight with them isn’t going to change anything,” Ro replies. “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. With great po –“

“Don’t you quote fucking Spider Man at me right now,” you say, cutting that one off in the bud.

“Excuse me?” asks Vikrama, sounding incredulous. “Yes, Sierra is as tough as they get, but Beatrice is going to be with her friends,” she says, trying to inject some modicum of reason into the situation. “They might lose every game, but it’s not because they’re slackers. They’re tough. Even righteous fury can’t even out a four to one fight – and I don’t care how many times you quote Spider Man in a day, that doesn’t actually give you spider powers!”

Rowan and you exchange a kind of meaningful look.

>Like hell it doesn’t.

Getting in to an actual fight is a bad idea, as I'm sure Beatrice will do everything possible to get us landed in it while she gets off scot free somehow. On the other hand, sap will isn't something they can complain about. Someone setting their phone to rec a video in their pocket so it can catch any audio of them discussing the sketchbook would be nice as hard evidence that they lifted it, and would be a useful blackmail tool to boot once it's done
>>
Lets just sap will and get the book. this doesn't have to be a huge thing.

You put your foot down. Figuratively. “Well I’m not Spider Man and I never will be!” you say, your hands clenching into fists. “But that doesn’t mean I just let people screw with my friends, okay?” (+2 Stress: 54/100)

Rowan stands up. “I think you’re a little too close to this,” she says calmly.

“I’ve done more against worse,” you say. “This is nothing I can’t handle.” Nothing’s holding you back from such a petty threat. (+1 Stress: 55/100)

Vikrama look to one another in wordless puzzlement.

“Why don’t you think about what you’re doing for a couple minutes first?” Rowan asks, almost begging. “Don’t let your anger get the better of you, you’re better than this.”
>>

It'd probably be a pretty good idea to just sap will on trixie, grab the book, and leave before anyone has a chance to make this dramatic.

Anon's going to feel like a real asshole when this injection of negative emotion makes trixie have to be hospitalized for self-harm
>>
>>32970206

“You don’t get it, Ro,” you say, edging away. “This is something I have to do. Like. This is who I am, okay? Please, I mean, agree, disagree, whatever, just don’t try to stop me.” You turn around and continue forward on your own.

You head over to the gym, and that’s where your search ends. You see her with a few friends over by where they’ve got the pool all opened up and crap for the suckers stuck in PE. The place is pretty much deserted, like, usually people play basketball in here or whatever but with the floor all screwed up there’s really no reason to hang around in here. It suits your purposes just fine, though. (+1 Stress: 56/100)

You start walking toward the group, trying to keep quiet. All you need is the book. You don’t even need to deal with any of them if you can get the book. You notice Beatrice has it casually tucked under one arm like she owns the damn thing. Why does she make you so angry? (+3 Stress: 59/100)

You feel like they’re about to notice you. Nobody chills poolside and shoots the breeze that intensely that they don’t notice people walk up when there’s nobody around. Beatrice and three friends. Soccer players. They’re probably in shape and like Vikrama said, tough. They look tough. But you’re a lot tougher. You break into a run, and then make for the book.

But stealth was never really an option here. One of her friends turns and look at you in alarm. Everyone follows suit. They kind of get in your way before you can reach Beatrice, and you’re forced to just kind of slow to a stop before them.

Priority is getting the book back without touching them. She has her clique which will lie like hell. Can't be seen touching them.
>>
>>32970686
Beatrice has it.
>>
>>32970655
Three humans, we have neo vision.
Sap will is unnecessary, just grab it, we basketball American.
>>
>>32970517
Intimidation might be helpful now.

Try to match our body language to that of our more thuggish days and generally look scary and possibly a bit unhinged.

"Beatrice, I am giving you a chance, you can either give back the book, or I can break your face and take it back.

I'm not scared of your little posse, and if you were smart you'd drop this little spat of yours before you get hurt."

If a fight starts prioritize taking down Beatrice and getting back the sketchbook, if she goes down the rest of them will probably skedaddle.
>>
>>32970686
Depends on the sketch book. Anywhere from 3x2 ft to 6x4 in.
>>
>Don't let them destroy the sketchbook.
>But don't touch them either.
>And don't sap will because using demon powers on highschoolers is wrong.
This is going to go poorly.
>>
>>32970741
Neo vision is demon powers.
>>
Im in favour of the intimidate / drain will option
>>
>>32970741
I don't think anyone has an issue with using sap will.

Possibly sap will on Beatrice while saying that if there's so much as a smear on the sketchbook we will destroy her
>>
>>32970741
Sap will, if used at the right time, could work. We just have to time it right as we talk to her.
>>
>>32970703
We can, but beter to make her real uncomfortableand make her really doubt pulling this shit is a good idea. Make her afraid
>>
>>32970765
Intimidation doesn't really work when people are around and you're out numbered
>>
>>32970517
>I promised I wouldn’t hurt you if I didn’t have to. Please do something stupid. Make my day.
Try to say it as threateningly as possible and simultaneously do a sap will.

It will make her look like a total bitchnigga to her group and they will wonder what the fuck is wrong with her and possibly abandon her if things go perfect. Or at the very least it will throw them off.

Actually, asking her why this is happening in combo with 'just give me the book'may have a better effect.

Anger will cause her to lash out, but depression at how far she is going could work. Maybe add in how she could be risking her whole team over this.
>>
>>32970844
Dude, they aren't going to care that she managed to snatch the book with skill and isn't going to warn them not to back down. She'll try something more heinous next time, that's how bullies work

Once we get the book safe, we might want to make a point of asking why her goons are risking getting into trouble just to defend her own petty pride. Beatrice isn;t friends with them any more than she was with Rowan, the moment they aren't being good little tools for her they're less than dirt.

You ignore her whatever the hell it is. “Look, just give me the damn book,” you say. “You’re acting like a whiny brat. Why I mean, I literally don’t even know your last name – how did all this crap get so fucking important to you anyway?”

“You made it important when you started screwing everything up for the team,” says Beatrice, as if explaining herself to a child. How can one human body contain so much arrogance without exploding? smug? (+4 Stress: 64/100)

“What, me like, not being a complete ass to Rowan is your motivation for terrorizing people you’ve never even met before?” you ask.

Beatrice laughs. “You don’t understand anything, do you.”

Her friends laugh along with her, though you can tell they don’t have any clue what the hell she’s talking about now.

“Tell me what I should understand,” you say, fury rising. “Try me. I dare you. I fucking dare you.” (+3 Stress: 67/100)

“Ro was meant for the sport,” says Beatrice, a kind of weird gleam in her eye. “She’s wasting her talent if she gives it up – there were scouts – real scouts at the games, you should have seen it,” she says. “And they weren’t just looking at her, they were looking at all of us! You can’t just quit when you’re the best there is!”
>>
>>32971118

“This is. This is because of fucking soccer,” you say. You stare in horrified realization of the awful truth. “This is ridiculous. This is so ridiculous, I can’t even. This isn’t even a real thing, right now, is it.” You reach forward experimentally to poke one of the girls, only to have them swat at you. You pull back. “Sweet mercy,” you mutter. It is real. (+3 Stress: 70/100)

“I told you wouldn’t understand,” says Beatrice, grinning triumphantly.

“Just walk away, bitch,” says one of her drones.

You can’t believe it. “You’re fucking trying to manipulate somebody into playing fucking the worst sport ever. Like, can you name any famous women soccer players? I mean, can you?! You can’t even do it!”

“Some people were meant to do certain things,” says Beatrice, almost in her own world now. “If you ever saw Rowan play – she can’t throw her life away so she can spend more time reading comic books and surfing the internet. You shouldn’t hold her back, Sierra.”

“And you don’t even know Rowan at all if you think – you don’t even know her at all! You’re like, arrogant and retarded if you think soccer’s the best thing Ro has going on in her life,” you say. She literally fights demons from hell in her spare time. In her spare fucking time! “You’re fucking nuts! All of you!” (+5 Stress: 75/100)
>>
>>32971129

“I’m giving you a chance to just walk away from this,” says Beatrice, a note of warning in her voice.

“Whoah whoah. You’re giving me a chance now? I’m the bad guy?” you ask. “You guys are like… are you even people? Like. Have you lost the ability determine right from wrong? Are you literally snakes or something? Like, bags of gardener snakes stacked up to look like real people? I can’t – this is just too… this is worse than drugs. This is a reality I don’t want to be a part of.” They are actually snakes in human skins. You’re almost certain of it now. (-1 Sanity: 90/100) (+10 Stress: 85/100)

Beatrice holds the sketchbook over the edge of the pool, grinning at you with that weird light in her eye.

“Beatrice. I’m better friends with Rowan than you ever have been or ever will be,” you say in a completely flat tone. “If you drop that book, you will never play soccer with Ro, ever again.” You stare into Beatrice’s almost frenzied eyes as you say this. And, for the first time, you think you spot a flicker of doubt.

And that’s your cue to get dangerous.

You contract your abundant horror and disgust with National High’s soccer team into a compact sphere and blast it at Beatrice. Tears come to her eyes, and she begins trembling, but instead of falling to her knees or dropping the book or whatever, she just stands there as if paralyzed. The book slips from her grasp an inch. (+5 Stress: 90/200)

That’s not happening today. Time seems to slow down. You punch the girl in front of you in the face. You hit her with such sudden force that she doesn’t think to do anything but topple backward. Like a bag of snakes. Damn that was therapeutic as hell. (-3 Stress: 87/100)

The other girl goes low and tries to get under your guard, but you dodge around her and shove the already-punched girl aside so you can break toward Beatrice. The third girl tries to get in your way, but you’re just so damn fast it’s scary.

You roll up to Beatrice, lean precariously over the pool, and pluck the sketchbook out of her wavering grip. That’s right, you almost whisper to the black dragon on the cover. Nobody’s getting their claws your cute little dragon grin but you.
>>
>>32971912

Your spider senses tingle, so you whirl around and block a punch from the girl that you punched in the face. Her nose is spilling hot, fragrant blood everywhere, and she is not happy about it one damn bit.

“Why’d it have to be snakes?!” you yell, elbowing her in the neck and sending her reeling. The other two girls pause at your frenzied condition, and note the effectiveness with which you have beat up their colleague. The incapacitated state of their leader doesn’t do much to embolden them. That’s right, you think, you’re the scariest thing in here. (-2 Stress: 85/100)

Beatrice moves at your side. “I hate you!” she screams, tears streaming down her face. She slaps you in the side of the head, inflicting no damage, but definitely riling you up. (+3 Stress: 88/100)

Your retaliation is swift. You sock her in the gut, and she collapses in a sobbing heap. (-5 Stress: 83/100) You don’t even have a comeback or anything.

Her two remaining friends don’t take you hitting their leader lightly. They come at you. Well you know what? This isn’t even a fight for you. You block the punch one throws at you, grab her head, and slam her into your knee. And you’re even doing all of this with Moriah’s sketch book in your off hand. You can fight four people one handed. (-3 Stress: 80/100)

You spin in place to face the final threat, and that’s when something unfortunate happens.
>>
>>32971929

Like, you’re good, but you’re kind of fighting with your back to a swimming pool. You put your back foot back an inch too far, and you find your balance a little more precarious than you thought it would be.

Last girl’s still coming at you though, in a full-on body tackle kind of thing. You throw Moriah’s sketchbook away from danger, and make to slide out of the way yourself, allowing your opponent to stumble right past. She goes screaming right into the deep end of the pool with a loud splash.

And you’re left on the edge alone, victorious.

Except, you’re off balance from the foot thing. You teeter back and forth for a second, Beatrice and pals getting a moment watching you just flail around stupidly.

Finally, your balance is decided.

Unfortunately, the decision falls to the wrong side. You keel backward, ever so slightly. Your fall doesn’t go fast or slow. It’s just… a graceful, predictable arc, as you find yourself first looking at Beatrice’s red face, then at the bleachers, and then at the high ceiling.

Your sweet red jordans lose contact with the edge, and you’re in free fall.

You hit water. It collapses out of your way for a brief moment, as if welcoming you to its cold, liquid embrace, and then surges back in over above you. And then it’s quiet.

Oh no.

>>
>>32972064
We tossed the book somewhere safe before we fell, and if any of those girls decide to fuck with it while we're getting out of the pool then the beatings shall continue.
>>
>>32972064
We already tossed it.

Also that sap will causes stress seems to be wrong.
>>
This is nothing. You have this under control, you assure yourself. (+5 Stress: 85/100)

Up. You need to go up. You flounder and struggle against the unhelpful water around you, fighting against its cool, omnipresent pressure. You burst out from the waters surface, gasping desperately for air. Everything’s wet.

Beatrice’s friend person that fell in is climbing out like, three feet from you. You reach out to grab her or something, and manage to get her leg, sweet mercy you’re okay.

But the girl looks back at you and kicks you off, assuming you’re trying to drag her back in. But not using that arm to struggle has made you sink kind of again. Crap. Okay.

You can do this. This isn’t even a problem. You’re like, right at the edge. Just. Right. There.

>Just focus on staying above the water.
>Make somebody help you.
>You can grab the edge, it’s right fucking there are you handicapped or something?

>>32972090
It has caused stress every other time we've used it and it says that it causes stress in the pastebin. Languid has forgotten to tally stuff before and gotten counts wrong.
>>
>>32972049
After rolling a 9, we'd better dolphin-leap out of the water while shouting "NEVADAAAAAAA", flick our hands dry as we land next to the sketchbook, and march out of there to report in to the authorities first so we can get in with our version of events first. We shouldn't even have to lie to come out of this looking pretty good, considering we weren't the instigators and were seriously antagonized.

Use our own shadow to push us closer to the edge of the pool. It's not like they'll be able to see it through all the blood in their eyes and even if they do, then it will just be written off as funky water refraction illusions.

Where in hell is Ro, or the rest of the guys?
>>
>>32972308
People decided that Sierra should say others should stay out of her way. Thus, they've slowed down or are not coming (most likely slowed down, I doubt Barond, Vikrama, and Rowan would remain out of it).
>>
>Ro comes in
>See's Sierra looking like a drowned rat
>"What the hell happened?!?"
>"I kicked their asses like I said I would and then I got wet."
>>
You reach for the edge – almost, you’re closer, maybe, than you were? But you miss. Just literally a couple inches? You can’t say anything. You have to concentrate on the task at hand. You try to do the not sinking thing some more, but you’re kind of farther away. Crap. This is not what you wanted to do today. You feel your clothes weighing you down. It’s like they’re trying to kill you. Even your sweet jacket has no mercy. In fact, it’s almost the worst offender. You kind of get off of rhythm or whatever, and you go under again.

It seems that the more you fight against gravity, the faster you start going down. People make this look easy. Aren’t humans supposed to float? Why aren’t you floating? What are you doing wrong?

Why is this happening to you? You were only trying to help. (+4 Stress: 89/100)

Although you can pretty much run forever, throw fire, and control shadows, there’s like, no shadows in the pool thanks to those stupid overhead fluorescent lights. Your notice your claws are out. Maybe that’s you panicking? But you’re not panicking, you’re just… you’re fighting. You need claws to fight.

Your lungs begin to burn. How long have you been down here? How long are you going to be down here? You’ve got to go up.
>>
>>32972392

It’s not happening. You really should have figured swimming out sometime. One of your foster parents worked at a pool. They said they’d teach you how to swim. You thought they were being stupid. You said you hated swimming. Well, you still do. This is pretty much why, right now.

Man, you really need to breath. One breath of water couldn’t hurt more than it hurts not to breath at all, right?

You can’t resist the urge. You inhale, and find everything full of water. You’re choking on unbreathable chlorinated fluid now. This is… this is not good.

There could be one way out of this, maybe. It's probably your only option besides drinking your way out of this mess.

No. You’re not going to do that. You fight against the terror gripping you, blasting it with thoughts of faces. Your friends. People in your classes. They’re everywhere. If you did get out like that, you wouldn’t want to. You can’t do it. You have to keep cool. Keep your cool.

That’s a whole lot of water you’re breathing. Man. This sucks.

It’s getting harder to fight. Your vision’s getting dim. Are you closing your eyes or are your eyes not working? Your brain’s not working, maybe. You’re so tired. Except for the mind numbing terror, the water around you is almost peaceful.

Don’t panic. Just… got to… stay calm. It’s darker now.

Don’t lose it now.

Almost there….

Stay... calm….

Stay….

….

Really bad decisions were made at the start of this (stupid players, trolls, or something else). We ran in and tried to make it work. We failed.

I dislike how much knowledge of the quest everyone would have had to have to avoid this. The narrative still makes sense, even if it does suck. While I don't like it, and I think it might end any chance of Sierra having a regular life, it might be what happens and soon, if we can't tread water till help arrives.

Okay, good night, thanks for the quest languid. I had a great time and I look forward to the next one.
>>
Okay, I usually do not address detractors, but this is a relevant question.

This was not a set outcome. The 9 that was rolled was in my HARD DC range, which gave Sierra a shot at actually swimming for a bit.

Sierra would not have had the fight if the bid to grab the sketchbook worked, which the rolls didn't really work out for, and hence would not have fallen in the pool.

Sierra wouldn't have fallen in the pool if she'd done better on her fight sap will roll things.

I was just frantic to get this encounter finished before it died.

Fucking pathetic. If you're the example of a common quester I can see why the rest of /tg/ hates them so much.
>>

>>32972591
Honestly, this works really well in our favour. Just think about it. Swimming team is there. Someone is unconcious in the swimming pool. No one helped them. We'll probably wake up in the hospital, but Beatrice (along with a large group of sports students) will never get into college. Moriah's dad is rich and quite powerful. The rich have their way.

>>32972600
Make another thread if necessary man, cap out the encounter, then end the final bit early. Don't push things along. If you've gotta sleep, just say you have to in a new thread, we'll keep it active, or you'll just restart later.

If we'd just Sap Will'd them all from the start, it would have gone fine.

Fingers crossed Ro had the presence of mind to hang around to damage control this in case... more or less this happened.

most of trixies crew are probably too stunned to be piecing any unusual sights together, especially while we're in the pool.

>>32972647
The "Ro would never play with you again if you damage it" line seemed to start to work. Used earlier (we always knew this was about getting Ro back for whatever reason, since our first encounters with them), before she got manic, it probably would have worked fairly well.

>>
>>32972801
>Freak out, probably still drown, kill some bitches if you don't.
>Drown for a little bit, probably get saved.
>>
>>32972600
You should probably put swimming in Sierra's weaknesses, given that we can't manage an indoor pool I think it should be there.

Dice weren't all that kind to us, and we did rush into this one, but I can see people not being happy about this kind of loss.

We were managing alright against the girls, beat four people up without trouble, and then fell, flailed uselessly in the water, and drowned. We have faced off against a variety of demons in the past and the foe that managed to take us down was an indoor body of water. It makes sense given that we can't swim at all and are fucked in the head, but damn does it make us look like a complete fucking dumbass.
>>
>>32972801

>>

>>
>>32972844

Well, it doesn't go far enough from what I've seen of you guys. Maybe if we had a life jacket on and still managed to drown it would accurately reflect your stupidity.
>>
>>32972844
What do you want to do with fire magic, underwater?
I doubt we have enough PP to evaporate the entire pool.
>>
>>32972777
Why? That might've made her back down for a moment, but if she's willing to spread rumors that Rowan's gay to discredit her, push Sierra right in front of her, and threaten to destroy someone's property I really don't think she cares what Rowan thinks, especially if she can possibly blackmail her by hurting her friends.
>>
>>32972872
