You are Christopher Phillips, previously just another teenage nerd living in a small English town, and a lot of things have changed in your life since you died.

You’re currently standing in a large, mostly-cleared warehouse, the walls and floor coated with a thin lair of ice, looking down at an intricate ice sculpture of your home town. With the death or banishment or whatever it was of Iolithae Septimian, the Excrucian who was magically maintaining it, the sculpture is starting to slowly melt along with the rest of the ice. You have the urge to prod it somewhere and see what happens, but that might not be a good idea. You can’t be entirely certain that the magic is all gone.

Besides, there’s plenty more cleaning up to do. Coriander Hasp, the bizarre red-headed rifleman you took down earlier, is probably still lying out in the snow, bleeding from various bullet wounds that apparently don’t suffice to kill him, although they do suffice to ruin his coat. Ajani and Gloria may well be somewhere in the building, assuming they haven’t been stashed elsewhere. And there’s the matter of the Man in White, who is at least theoretically on your side, using Isabella as his puppet in the mortal world. And... huh. While you thought Iolithae had taken everything with her when she vanished, it looks like one of her weird-looking daggers is embedded in the far wall.

Where do you want to start?

[]Go back outside and deal with Coriander Hasp. He may be incapacitated for now, but he’s the biggest threat if he gets back up.
[]Find Ajani and Gloria. God knows what’s happened to them, being held prisoner by these things - you should check they’re all right.
[]Have words with the Man in White.
[]Check out that cool dagger. If it’s still here, it’s got to be important, right?
[]Wasn’t there something that you’re forgetting? Something else you meant to do... [Custom]

We'll get the dagger later, and find Ajani and Gloria right after.

You make your way carefully outside, the halls eerily quiet. Outside, most of the snow appears to have melted into small puddles, except for a small pile directly around Coriander Hasp's body. He lies in a small, incongruous snowbank, bullet holes riddling his chest, but with a curious lack of blood.

As you walk up to stand by Coriander's head, he opens his eyes and stares up at you. He doesn't make any move to get up, particularly with your gun pointed at his head, but his face crinkles into a perturbed frown.

"Alright, alright, you beat me," he says. "What do you want now? Can't a bloke be left in peace?"

"How about you leave me and mine in peace? And the people we depend on. And the rest of the town - actually, just go away. Go away and never come back. How about that?"

Coriander shrugs, then winces. "In case you haven't noticed, mate, you kinda filled me full of holes. I ain't going nowhere for a while. I need to get some new skin to cover these up. And a new shirt. Can't forget the shirt."

"For someone who's been shot full of holes, you're awfully conscious. And snarky."

He grins suddenly. "What can I say? It's a gift."

"Yeah, yeah." You prod him in the side with your foot, eliciting another wince. "You're faking it, aren't you?"

Coriander manages to look genuinely offended at this. "Oi! I'm full of bloody holes, ain't I?" He reaches up and pokes one of the holes with his finger. "Look at this! Right through my favourite shirt! And my skin, too!"

"That might be a bit more convincing if the hole actually was bloody." You prod him with your foot again. "Get up."

Coriander pulls himself slowly to his feet, grumbling and complaining. "Still got holes in my favourite shirt."

"You can buy a new shirt. You can probably just magic money out of nothing or whatever."

"This is my favourite shirt! I can't just have a new favourite shirt all of a sudden. Besides, they don't make these any more." He looks smug, brushing some remaining snow off the sleeve. "Got it in Italy about 200 years ago. Nicked it off some twit named Byron. I'd have to go back and nick another one. Bloke's going to run out of shirts eventually."

"They totally do make those any more. You can just buy one on the internet. Why are we even talking about this?"

Coriander sighs and snaps his fingers. His rifle is suddenly slung over one shoulder, and he adjusts his jacket to cover some of the bullet holes.

"*Buying* a new one. Nobles these days are so damn pedestrian. Whatever." He sighs again, and suddenly is no longer there.

You head back inside, checking the rooms you pass carefully, but each of them turns out to be empty. When you get back to the main room, the Woman in White is balancing the strange dagger on her fingertip, by its tip.

"Uh, isn't that dangerous? I know you're magic and everything, but that can still cut you."

"What? No, it can't." She suddenly tosses the weapon end-over-end in your direction, and it thuds into the wall a few inches from your head. "Go on, touch it."

"What the hell? Why would I -"

"Go on, it won't cut you."

"Look - hey, this is blunt. What the hell? Who fights with a blunt dagger?"

"That's not a dagger. It's a sai - a metal baton with prongs for trapping and breaking swords. They're always blunt."

You pause, prying the dagger - or the sai - from the wall. "Didn't she cut you once or twice with this? How did she do that if it's blunt?"

The Woman in White shrugs. "Magic."

"... fine. Oh, can I keep this? I used to have a nice dagger but I'm not sure where it's gone."

"Sure, knock yourself out. Not literally. But it's probably not an Abhorrent Weapon or anything. Just seems like a lump of metal."

You nod, tucking the sai into your waistband, and head further into the warehouse. This section looks like it contains a couple of blocks of offices. Finally, you locate Ajani and Gloria.

You push open the door of a small office to find that it's been cleared of furniture and a small pile of blankets tossed into the middle. Ajani and Gloria lie in the middle of the pile, naked and clutching each other closely. They look up and then suddenly break apart as they recognise you, throwing the blankets over themselves.

"Chris!" Ajani says nervously as you step inside, "Thank goodness you're here, we, er, were afraid we were going to freeze to death. Is it over? Can we go home now? Oh, and could you pass us our clothes? They're over there."

Once Ajani and Gloria have hurriedly dressed themselves, is there anything you want to do or say to them?

"Yeah. Yeah, it's over. Iolithae and Coriander are both gone. Good to see you're both okay. What happened here?"

Ajani turns bright red. "Nothing, nothing! We were just very cold, and - "

"With the bad guys. What happened with the bad guys? Did they tell you anything about their plans?"

Ajani blushes slightly less, and shakes his head. "No, they just grabbed us, threw us in here and left us. Occasionally one of them would come throw some food or drink inside - chocolate bars, cans of soft drinks, stuff they must have stolen from somewhere or other. We tried a few escape plans, pretending to be ill, rushing them when they opened the door, but they were just too fast and too strong for us to overpower. They didn't really seem to notice or care when we hit them, they just shoved us back inside."

Gloria nods. "They cared little for us in any situation."

You sigh. "Well, at least you're both safe. And no longer naked. Whose idea was that, anyway?"

Ajani and Gloria look at each other, and this time they both blush, but neither seems to be willing to speak up.

"Fine, whatever. We've... actually, I think we've run out of enemies. We've got some sort of armistice with the Winter King, those two arseholes are gone, hopefully for good, and everything else is in hand. I guess we need to have a victory party. You guys are up for a party, right?"

Ajani shrugs. "You know what, sure, what the hell." Gloria flashes him a quick glare. "What the heck. Sorry. Right now we need to go home, get fresh clothes, have a shower, but afterwards, tomorrow night or something, a party sounds great. It's been a while since we had a good reason to celebrate. Who else is coming?"

"I'm not sure yet, I only just had the idea. I'll call you or text you when I know when and where we're having it, okay?"

"Awesome." Ajani claps you on the shoulder in what he probably thinks is a macho fashion, and heads out of the room, Gloria following after.

You return to the centre of the warehouse, where the Woman in White is watching the ice sculpture of Barrellton slowly melt. You cough loudly to get her attention, and she turns and walks over to you, studying you curiously.

"Yes?" she asks. "What is it now?"

"Coriander is gone now. Iolithae too. I found Ajani and Gloria - I guess they must have gone out past you, if you noticed - and it looks like their big plan is melting away over there. So is there any more clean-up left to do?"

She shrugs. "The Excrucians are banished, reality is presumably safe, their plans are presumably disrupted. I do wish we could have figured out what the original plan actually was, what they had been hoping to accomplish with all this. You haven't had any thoughts?"

"Uh, it kinda looked like their plan was just to destroy the town. That isn't bad enough?"

"Destruction is a logical concept, a part of creation. They would have needed to induce some sort of paradox or impossibility, something severe enough that Creation would have ripped out the offending paradox and the town around it would have come along as collateral damage. You saw nothing along those lines?"

"Those weird flames, I guess. I don't know what was up with them, though."

"Hmm. We'll just have to hope it's dealt with, then. What else? Well, there's always the matter of spreading a tyrannical rule over the land, ruling with a velvet glove and an iron fist. You think this body would look good sitting on a throne?" She chuckles, striking a pose.

You frown. "That's not your body to go ruling with."

"It's as much mine as everything else here is. But relax, you'll get your girl back soon enough. I can't really maintain the link for long enough to mount a proper campaign of conquest. It'll probably start wavering pretty soon, actually."

First, Masami. She's a Deep One, and I want to know how the Man stacks up against a Great Old One. What can we do to keep feeding Masami's desire to stay human?

Second, Esther. What can we do to solidify our alliance with her, and her control over her house.

"Well, as long as you're sticking around for a little while, I could use one or two bits of advice. There have been a few minor issues."

The Woman in White locates a convenient crate and sits down, leaning back a little and looking sceptically at you.

"What sort of issues? You ought to be able to manage for yourself in most cases."

"Do you know anything about a being named Dagon?"

The Woman in White opens her mouth, pauses, closes it again, and taps one finger thoughtfully against her cheek. When she speaks again, it's with a careful and measured tone.

"Hmm. Yes. That might be somewhat... above your pay grade. The original Dagon, and not some copycat or imitator? He's, ah, one of the Bosses. If he gives you an instruction, even a weird sounding one... you're not required to obey, as such, he's not *your* boss, but it's probably a good idea. They see things in ways we can't. Have you spoken directly to some shard or aspect of Dagon?"

"No, it's my friend. She was raised in some mortal cult that worships him, and apparently she's going to turn into something else as she grows up, a servant being of Dagon. If there's some way to avoid that..."

She nods. "Dagon is a number of complicated and confusing things, most of which make no sense, but he's... fair, in his own way. If she requests freedom from him, of her own free will, he will grant it to her. She will be a normal human. As far as 'normal' means much these days."

"The other major worry I have is about Esther..."

You give a quick outline of Esther's situation and her takeover of her house, and the Woman in White frowns and shrugs.

"Well done for securing a new asset, more or less, but I'm not sure why you're bringing this to me for advice. It sounds as though you've already done all you needed to do."

"But what about strengthening my alliance with her, or strengthening her reign over her house?"

She sighs. "I can't hold your hand on everything. Just keep doing what you're doing."

“Now, if that’s all?”

“I guess so. Nothing else that I can’t handle myself, anyway.”

“Good. As you may have noticed, there’s a war on. A good NCO is one of the most valuable things one can have. A bad one must be removed as quickly as possible.” She gives you a piercing glare, then suddenly twitches to one side.

“Hmm. It’s starting already. Pity. Still, I’ve got what I needed here, I do believe. May as well go sooner rather than later.” She straightens out her dress carefully, then raises one hand and snaps her fingers.

There’s a burst of unimaginably pure white light. When it fades, the crate has been scorched black, the ice has been melted for several feet around, and Isabella is sitting there in her normal clothes, looking stunned.

“Chris? What happened? Where the fuck are we? Did we win?”

“Pretty much. Sit down - uh - stay sitting down. Let me fill you in...”

I'm somewhat gratified that the Man is being far more truthful about our relationship to him; no more of this vague "I am you and you are me" nonsense he used to keep us in line before.
A straightforward "I am your boss, you do what I tell you or you die" is less frustrating, especially when arguing about it with other anons.

Also, at least now we know to walk carefully around Masami and that we need to grind the fuck out of that social link.
