You stare across the ten feet between you and Erika, Kuromuromine's Champion and your challenger and she stares right back. Somewhere in the background a judge is outlining the rules of the match, but you barely hear her. All you see, all you hear is right in front of you: your opponent.

You are Commander Russells, of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and as you stare across the grassy space you can catch the barest glint of her smug look with in her practiced, noble facade. You're gonna wipe that smug look off her face, today.

With the judges command you both take a couple of steps forward and shake before the match.

It takes every fiber of will in your body to simply shake Erikas hand and wish her good luck. But the fury in your eyes is reflected in hers. You turn and walk back towards your crew, nodding to them. "Mount up." You say as you walk towards Black Jack. "Let's get this done."

The city was largely broken up into three zones- a central downtown district was mostly large office buildings and commercial buildings- towards the the docks you got into an industrial section that had largely been devoted to fishing- a lot of storage and factories. Further inland was a gradient of urban to suburban residential buildings.

"Alright, so where are we heading, Commander?" Richard askes as the big Ford engine roars to life.

"Industrial area... Bring us down along the seawall." You keep the cupola open and let the breeze through- it's still forty-five minutes before the game goes live at 1100. The tall buildings and leftover equipment will give you cover- in addition Black Jack's lower profile will make it easier to move among the various cover.

It doesn't take long before Black Jack merges onto the coastal road and then drops down onto inland side of the seawall- The city itself was still the picture of devestation- abandoned cars and boats and litter still covered the streets, slowing your progress as you move around or, in some cases, through them. "Alright... here. Turn left."

You look down at the map- this street was a main boulevard which cut straight across the city- an ambush position here would almost cut the city in half for Erika. On the other hand its an open position without any hard cover- the buildings along either side were simply sheet-metal industrial buildings.

The King Tiger's turret is located closer to the middle of the tank than the front. We'll see enough of her tank to hit before she'll even have line of sight to us, let alone traversing her hull and turret.
>>
>>33011819
That's assuming she comes from in front. from the side or behind, we can't traverse in time.
>>
>>33011819
We won't have a great shot at her armour from that angle though. It'll make a clean penetration improbable.

ok, accepted. how fast is the traverse? Example: If Erika drives up behind us, can we turn 180 degrees before she turns 90 degrees?
>>
>>33012434
I'd be surprised if we couldn't, I can't find hard numbers for it, though I expect our turret to be able to traverse significantly faster due to the fact that its smaller/lighter/etc.

>>
The ambush position is tempting, but it offers almost no protection. Further up the road though, the buildings become newer cement-and-steel construction, harder cover but the further you move from the seawall, the more area is behind you.

It's an acceptable trade for the moment. "Alright, see those buildings? You ask, holding the throat-mic against your neck as you crane your head around to check cross streets. "The blue ones with the little windows along the top?"

"Park there." Richard replies as he puts the tank in gear and starts travelling up the street towards the more reliable cover.

The only issue now is detection- urban environments cut line of sight, but if you turn off your own engine and run on the quieter back-up generator you can often hear the sound of an approaching tank echoing down the streets long before you see them. It's a trick that most one-on-one tankers know.

You're better Erika doesn't- in a group theres more tanks covering more angles and area in an urban conflict- communication makes the risk of shutting off your engine make a lot less sense.

"Alright, Richard- cut the engines. Keep us on the generator, though." You say- a few seconds later the engines sputter and die- aside from the quiet drone of the little back-up engine. What Erika doesn't realise is that she has a huge disadvantage in an unlikely place.

Rubber. The Pershing's tracks were steel with a rubber boot- in an operational sense it made the tracks last longer between needing to be replaced. But in a tactical sense, it meant that you could already hear the Tiger II's naked-steel tracks far in the distance.

>"So has anyone actually made a pass at you, then?"

"Y'know..." You say conspiratorily. "I bet someone's made a pass at him..." You bite your lip and let the idea take hold with the rest of the crew. It wouldn't take long for a bombshell like that to go off.

Richard is the first to jump in. "I wonder... Anzu doesn't seem like the type to go for a pass..." He says. "At least not in a way that Patrick would realise, anyway." You have the funny feeling that Anzu making a pass somehow involved waking up in the morning with a headache and no memory of anything past 9PM the previous night.

Roy jumps in. "Momo maybe? Yuzu? Is that how they got him in the pink suit? How very inappropriate- taking advantage of a good Catholic boy like that..." You can practically feel Patricks rising need to claw his way out of the tank.

>"...What if it was one of the Freshman girls?"
>Let it go... The Team's got it from here.
>"Rose- got any ideas?"
>Other.

The ball is officially rolling- now you can relax and get back to listening and scanning up and down the central boulevard. As you begin to tune out the blatent rumormongering and attempts at guessing the Irishman's potential paramour- assuming she even existed- you hear something.

Well, really, you don't hear something: The Tiger. "Hold up." You say. "Quiet!" Instantly the crew was down to business- this sort of discussion was par for the course and they knew how to buckle down. You put your binoculars up to your eyes and start checking up the road.

You see a glint. A piece of glass? A window? Binoculars! And then a puff of grey smoke. You inhale sharply- but Rose is ahead of you and cuts through the intercom. "Contact foreward!" You suck yourself back into the turret and slam the hatch closed behind you as a high-velocity 88mm shell cuts through the air above your tank and out over the ocean behind you.

"Contact confirmed! They've fired." Eight major intersections down- you consult your map. "Distance: Eighteen-hundred!" Nearly two-kilometers- the shell probably wouldn't have had the kinetic energy to hurt you even if it did hit but you don't want to find out.

>Long range combat
Ahaha they're fucked.
>>
>>33016435
Their armour is stronger, is better sloped frontally, Optics are arguably better, and their gun is essentially comparable to ours.

I'm not quite seeing how *they're* the ones who are fucked.
