Big Changes Quest Thread 17

With sudden jolt you awaken at the foot of your couch amid a crumpled heap of your own parts. A tangle of yourself, your arms and legs are all uneven in mass and length, and stretches of wild long and short hair stretching out and over your living room including your now broken coffee table.

Your body thrums with the sound of a distant song. It is making it difficult to focus, and your body seems to be in a constant state of mass shifting flux, a pool of a the red and black forming around you as it seeps from random portions of your skin. Your jeans hang loosely from your frame in tatters, your tank top is soaked through with sweat.

The last thing you remember is waking up in the middle of the night, your head in Hanako’s lap, and being beset by music and the vision of searching eyes on every screen you could see as they came to life and then the world went dark. Whatever it was, it was dreamless, and now you are out of sorts in a way you have never been before. Hanako is asleep, fallen on her side on the couch. There is a blissful look on her face, a relief on her features despite yesterday’s tension.

She stirs, is she waking up? She can’t see you like this!

You are Tsubasa Campbell, and because of science beyond the understanding of mankind you are something more than human. Last night you were kissed by a girl and you liked it, before she and her pudge broke your coffee table.

Waking up literally tangled up, interesting start to the day.
Even if we can pull it together, we need to chat more deeply with her about our.. situation.

It was Hitomi who noticed something strange.
>>
>>33033870
Really? I could have sworn Hanako mentioned the incredible growth spurt as well, complaining about how we were more stacked than her now, as well as keeping our pudge in check.

Come to think of it, would it be possible to give her a nanite colony whose only job is to keep her metabolism high so that she can lose weight more easily?
>>
>>33033915
Oh, she did, but it wasn't as accusatory as Hitomi's observation at the party.
>>
>>33033915

Diabetes and the health risks from being overweight are not petty; they can strike earlier than you might think.
>>
>>33033915
Hitomi recognized that something more was up. We did reveal to her that Micro Mori seemed suspicious and had bought the hospital. She didn't pry further.

We've been bad at opening up so far, getting close, and then backing off several times now.
>>
>>33034017
Well you have to admit, telling your friends that you gained superpowers, that there's a crazed cult who think you're a Goddess, giant deadly nanobot infested kaijuu running amok and a wealthy, powerful and mysterious corporation trying to get your support is... difficult to explain
>>
>>33034079
>giant deadly nanobot infested kaijuu running amok
That was actually on world news, what with the Vegas Incident, and this most recent kaiju attack.
>>
>>33034008

Calming yourself from the near panic that grasps at you, you feel the practically vibrating components of your being and pull them inward. Your hair retreats, shortening in length back into your scalp. The loose and small or oversized limbs right themselves and untwist in a searing pain that you set your jaw against and suffer through. Your musculature and skeletal structure return to their primary state, locking into the optimized molecular structure you cultivated early on amid your myriad changes.

By the time it’s nearly done, you shoot a hand over a waking Hanako’s eyes as a thin gasp of pain escapes your lips. She murmurs in confusion as sleep final escapes her embrace and bleary words slip past her lips.

If this is going to go anywhere, and you want to see wherever or whatever that is, you can’t hide this from her.

“Huh, what’s going on,” realization and memory find her, “Oh! Tsubasa-chan? Is that you?”

“Yeah, Hanako,” you breath deeply as the last of the red and black withdraws from your floor and flattens against your skin, fading from sight, “its me,”

Withdrawing your hand, Hanako looks down at you and smiles softly and happily. Its a weary smile, given the circumstances that propelled last night into happening it is not surprising.

“Did you roll off the couch? You sleep in a high loft, it would have probably sucked if you fell from there instead,” she giggles in a faux scolding manner, “Hey, what happened to your pants?”

“No...Hanako. Listen, this is going to be difficult to explain, so please just keep an open mind,” you struggle for a moment beneath her growing confusion, “We’re friends, and maybe we will be something more, but we need to talk about something first. I’ve been dancing around it for a few weeks, struggling with it even,”
>>
>>33035131
She is anxious and worried at your words. Her eyes glance over to the ruined table in slight worry before she composes herself and steadies her own suddenly staggered breath. You rest a calming hand on her own as she sets herself upright on the couch and rubs the sleep from her eyes with her free hand. She finds purchase and focuses on that for a moment.

“I’m here and listening,” she seems a bit worried, “is there someone else you have feelings for? I- no, sorry, I didn’t mean to keep talking. Go on,”

“You know I’ve been going through some big life changes since the accident,” you look away trying to find the words, “finally growing up, I guess its a fringe benefit of what happened. I...I should have died that day,”

Raising a hand you lay it between your breasts and inhale sharply. The phantom pain of the shrapnel that pinned you to the sliding door beats with the silent bass line of the song still coursing through you, your heart beginning to match it’s rhythm.

“All my old scars healed over in the time I was out of it, along with the new ones from the blast. Even if I had managed to not get covered in a new set of second degree burns, I was impaled. A piece of the truck went through me. Cut through me.”

The memory of dying catches up to you again, as it sometimes does when you are alone with your thoughts. You’d spent a great deal of time pushing it aside, but now...now that you say it out loud it feels all the more real.

“I don’t understa-” she tilts her head and grips the hand you’ve laid atop her own and stops herself, “You’re scaring me, Tsubasa-chan.

“No, You will. Do you remember the night of my come back party?” she nods, “Really remember it. Really remember it please,”

The two of you sit in the mid morning silence of your apartment. For this moment the distant music fades low enough for you to think and feel again but for the barest unintended undulations of the red and black within you.
>>
>>33034957
One of my favorite part was the introduction of a kind of Kaiju Hyeborean Age, a highly-radioactive time before most creatures known to man, ruled by ginormous atomic-fueled creatures beyond our imaginings. Reminded me of this quest a bit with that actually.
>>
>>33035157

Hanako looks at you confused at first, but a slow horror creeps behind her eyes. Your own plead to her and she composes herself, gripping your hand that much tighter in her lap.

“It slid…” she murmurs, “off of your face,”

You nod slowly.

“How come I couldn’t remember I saw it, but I didn’t see it. Did you do something?” she asks with an edge of worry to her voice, “Can you-”

“I didn’t know I was doing it. Once I realized it was happening I shut it down,”

Her grip tightens.

“That isn’t all. I can...do things. I can control my body in other ways...the way I look right now, its my, I guess you’d call it default. It’s been gradually changing,” you take a deep breath, “Brave new world...I was on the beach in Chiba. A monster to stop the monster, one freak to-”

“Tsubasa-chan is not a freak,” its barely above a whisper, but as you look up she’s staring you straight in the eye.

Tears well up as she repeats herself, a little bit louder this time. You still haven’t quite gotten over the first admission, familiar as it was when you first spoke with her after you woke up.

“Thank you,” you say softly and rise pulling her off the couch with you, “Thank you so much, Hanako, that means so much to me,”

This time you find yourself on the verge of crying as you envelope the smaller woman in a hug. She’s warm. After a moment gripped against her, she presses you away carefully. Once at arms length, she sticks her index finger into your chest.

“So you’ve been cheating!” she huffs with puffed cheeks, “I have to starve myself and over extend myself in aerobics while you just shove whatever you want into your super powered maw!”

Her accusations catches you on edge and your pride bleeds through.

“Excuse me?! You think those weights were for show? Couldn’t you smell this place when you got here? I work hard, and all that does is fuel all my impossibly fast but necessary metabolic changes! Do you know how much energy manipulating local gravity takes?”

She crosses her arms and sighs.

“Like a gym bag and - oh. Ohhhh,” a sinister smile graces her impish visage, “Oh no, definitely not for shows,”

She practically purrs the last bit and steps forward, into your personal space and looks up into your eyes from very close. The tips of her fingers splay out against your firm and contoured abdomen and your flinch, blushing the whole time. Damnit, she’s so smug, thinking she’d figured you out.

“No wonder Tsubasa-chan got so big and strong so quickly,” she giggles, “once she found something she *liked*,”
>>
>>33036026

You look away, embarrassed by her accurate summation, when the tension of the room cuts out. Her palm is flat against your stomach and her other hand snakes out one of yours. Casting your eyes down, you see she’s looking away.

“Are...are you going to use it to help Hitomi? All they have are guns, and they don’t hurt you anymore, right?”

When it gets around to it, we should discuss Kaito's interest and relationships too.

At this point, my thinking is seeing if he's still interested after we reveal the situation to him.
If he is, I say we discuss well.. whether they'd consider sharing Tsubasa.
We're flavors of magical realm, and if we're ending up in relationships, might as well go for an actual harem over waifu/husbando war/drama, if they are willing.

>"Absolute worst case scenario: I rip the roof off the church and vaporize every Yakuza in there, then drive them out of the city."
If it comes down to it, I would vote for the last plan, but the main reason for saying so is to give Hanako assurance that we WILL save her sister.

>>33036121

>I'll give them an ultimatum, remove the groom from the family, or watch as their criminal empire falls apart around them
>>
>>33036273
>>33036159
I might suggest more subtle action, overall.

Diplomatically, we need to come at this from an Honor standpoint. The Yakuza, Hitomi, and her father seemed to be well seeped in tradition. Yes, money helps, but the whole scheme of debts and blood run deeper.

We need to find a way, within that system, to break, cancel, or nullify the debt Hitomi took on for everyone's lives.

'How' is still a bit tricky though. If we could manage a trial by combat, that would be great, but we might need to find some other way to settle things. Maybe find out what debts they owe, or could owe if a secret or two came out, and try to wrangle those to our advantage. Maybe arrange enough pulled strings to get them to back down. Mori Micro might be a help there, depending on their connections (though if they have many to a drug-dealing organized crime family, I might be hesitant to trust them.. but perhaps a favor owed to a friend who owes a favor to a friend etc etc..)

However, that jerk isn't likely to give up his bride, at least unscathed. We will likely have to neutralize him, either in a fashion where he backs down so hard that he's sincerely in our debt.. or he is quietly made to disappear.
>>
>>33036544
That's why I said diplomacy first, all those actions qualify as diplomacy when dealing with Yakuza.
Still, Hitomi's fiance is the head of the local family (Gaum, was it?) of the Yakuza, if we kill him and everyone under him they'd probably back off.
I agree, though. Violence should be saved for last, well, overt violence anyway.
>>
>>33036642
Though.. to be honest, if he were to simply disappear mysteriously before any challenge to the marriage was made known, they'd have a hard time suspecting us or our friends.

However, I have some concerns about killing people.. though, to be fair, he did try to kill us first, just years prior.
>>
>>33036834
Yeah, but the debt would still be there, that's the main problem. Another Yakuza boss could decide he likes Hitomi and then we have the same problem.
Except the new one might be even worse and/or competent.
And if we start killing every Yakuza that gets engaged to Hitomi, they'd catch on eventually.

That's plan Z, if all forms of social discourse (basically everything >>33036544 said) fail, we start burning his shit.
If that fails we enlist Mori Micro to start using connections to get the police to arrest all his guys, possibly in conjunction with burning more shit.
If THAT fails, then it's Kill All Yakuza, or at least the local Gaum or whatever it was.
Also, we should threaten him with vague demands not directly related to Hitomi from the time we start getting direct. Stuff like 'Withdraw all Yakuza from the city or more shit shall burn' but more eloquent and under an assumed identity.

How about this for a cunning plan. We arrange a meeting with the groom, looking disheveled and in absolute terror, and stammer out a blubbering request to not marry Hitomi. When he refuses, say "please, I beg of you, reconsider this rash course of action."
"I don't know what she's going to do." then leave as quickly as is polite to do so.

Then, after a few days, come into his home while he's alone, in full red and black, and put him in a german suplex. Do not confront anybody else; just keep suplexing him every few days until he relents.

Gripping her hand tightly, your heart skips a beat and the dissonance reminds you of the still distant rhythm. You may be nigh invulnerable, but none of the people you care about are. Not your friends. Not what little family you have left. Not whatever Hanako wants to be for your. A pang of worry and guilt.

“I may be bulletproof, but are you? Is Hitomi?” you release her hand and lay gentle hands on her shoulders, “Don’t worry, I’m working on a cunning plan,”

She stares at you a moment before breaking your grip and stepping forward and hugging you tightly. In her embrace she lays her head against your chest, her cheek resting on your bust, she holds this a moment as it rises and falls with breathing which had grown heavy with worry. She doesn’t seem put off by the sweat soaked stench of your shirt.

“What have you thought of so far?” her eyes slide closed.

“Mostly threats and violence...but Mori Micro Industries has been trying their hardest to get me to cooperate with them. Well, they consistently ask nicely, anyway. Maybe I could figure out a way to use them to my advantage against the Dojima. I’ve thought about all the ways I could just walk in and...and kill Yuichi Dojima, but I’m not sure I could and I am beyond certain that just tearing the roof off of his house and going to town is a last resort.”

She sits back on your couch, and looks suddenly much tired and weaker. Her clothes are still in disarray from the night before and a bit messy from her...expenditures in your kitchenette. You are relatively sure that you smell extremely ripe and need a shower and change of clothes anyhow. It is still early, and breakfast sounds like a good idea, but you’d better get cleaned up.
>>
>>33041351

Turning from here, you begin to pull the edge up on your tank top as you make your way to the washroom. Even if you can be embarrassed, you decide to indulge your developing exhibitionist streak. Though she can only see your smooth shoulders and chiseled back, you imagine she’s enjoying the show and the tease of your own exposure. Before you can make it two steps, her voice catches up to you.

“Wait, in the beach footage...didn’t you have wings?” she asks innocently.

>”I can have many things,” continue into the shower.

You look back over your shoulder and smirk at her, holding just long enough to probably be frustrating before turning back and continuing off to your shower. Putting an extra sway in your step, you practically sing back to her.

”I can have many things”

You bet she’s squirming on the couch with that, her lessons in teasing and being coy getting turned right around on her.

The hot water feels good, and the cadence you used call back to Hanako keeps coming as you sing a few bars in the shower. No, something isn’t quite right with that. Its the song that woke you up. Its the song that made all of your parts thrum in equal disharmony. Something is wrong.

Stepping out of the shower and grabbing a towel, you stop...when had you started belting? Something is definitely wrong. Hanako is waiting for you beyond the door sans her skirt and long open blouse. She steps in past you with a tired smile and a quick appraising once over.

“That song was beautiful. I didn’t know you could sing like that, what was it?” she pulls a towel from the linen cabinet in the washroom, “It was so relaxing,”

>I don’t know, I think I heard it in a dream. I think I can still hear it now, far away.
>”It is relaxing, isn’t it,” let it relax you.

“I-” something happened last night. You woke up and...eyes? No! “It isn’t safe, something is going on!”

You shout and pull Hanako back from the bathroom mirror as the light flickers and she gives a weak gasp as instead of your own images reflected, there is a searching eye of grayscale and green tint upon the edges.

“I’ve got you!,” you say and ward her from the eye with your own body.

There is a pulse, and you are knocked back slightly into her as the eye centers its frantic and twitching scan. It centers its focus upon you. Hanako is unaffected by the force, and props you against it.

“Stay behind me, I’ll protect you,” your voice is suddenly ragged and hoarse.

Pinpricks touch your skin as the force moves with the highs and lows of the distant song. You envelope yourself in the red and black as your towel falls away into Hanako’s hand. This time is solidifies as literal armor plates, small wings sprouting nicely from the core of your back.

“Wha- wings!”

A spiderweb of cracks depresses across the window, the far off song picks up in tempo. Something claws at the back of your consciousness, trying to find a way in. You won’t let it. YOU WON’T LET IT! YOU ARE IN CONTROL! The red and black seeps from your eyes and wraps around your face and head, quickening tendrils grasping in a protective helmet.

Hanako is beside you, still holding on despite the slick material that rose from your skin and hardened. The cracks take hold as you stare the distant eye down in a suddenly frosty anger. These bastards aren’t above attacking you in your own home, why would that change?
>>
>>33042820

“Get out of my mind!” you shout at it and it shatters, the phantom image of an older man with a green visor across his eyes laughs at the two of you as glass shards rocket forward before stopping short against your body. It doesn’t hurt. None made it past you. Hanako is safe.

You lead her out of the bathroom as the helmet peels back and sinks into your skin, your red hair cascading again down your armored back. The pieces of glass sinking into your armor and being absorbed beneath your skin. Everything is back in working order, but you still hear the far off music.

“What wa-” Hanako begins as your front door is kicked inward and Hanako again squeaks in surprise.

Standing there holding a sleek and oversized radar gun, pointed momentarily at the two of you before she relaxes, is Tomoe Tomoko. She isn’t wearing her hooded blue jacket, what clothes she does have on look singed, and she is covered in soot and a number of light bruises and small cuts. The normally vivacious girl looks at your armored state, the sinking bits of glass in your armor, and the barely dressed woman behind you and exhales in relief before smiling a savage and frustrated smile. There is a rapidly spreading red stain beneath her left breast on her gray shirt.

“Is now a bad time,” she’s trying to be coy with you.

She stiffens as a steel wrenching screech sounds behind her.

"Hanako, you remember Tomoe-san," you smile with a certain savage glee as you feel the encroaching mass of erratically behaving nano colonies.

Striding forward, laying a hand on Tomoe's shoulder and pushing her further into the apartment, you stand in the doorway. The plated armor, more for a show of mental dominance over yourself than anything else, melts into a second skin carapace marking and accentuating ever facet of your diamond cut body. Breakfast is delivering itself to you, how convenient. You will have to fight for your survival, and the thought of dominating a foe sent to kill you and flexing your great power sends shivers through your nervous system. They are quite pleasant.

"I'm sure the two of you have loads to talk about. I'll just be a second. Someone was kind enough to send me a very special breakfast," your voice takes a sultry and playful edge. The predatory nature of the red and black, of yourself, exerting itself against the would be hunter coming for you, "I'll be sure to pick something up for the both of you when I'm done~"

Closing the broken door gingerly behind you, you leave the two in a stunned silence. As it hangs there in the frame, unsecured, you can bear Hanako plain as day as the last few seconds catch up to her.

"That was kinda very hot," she says quietly before turning to Tomoko, "So are you secretly Bat-nurse or something?"

They'll banter. It's fine. You move away from the apartment in the mid morning light. Normal people paying you no immediate mind but subconsciously giving you a wide berth. Your hair defies gravity and licks at the sky. Veins of red and black reach up through the exposed skin on your face and leave a wonderfully disguising pattern across your features.

The world has seen you, blearily, once before. So it doesn't matter quite so much, you cannot be recognized if you don't wish it. Soon, you will let them see their guardian, see the one who will protect them from monsters.

-HONK SCREEEEEEONCH- your prey calls as it rounds a pedestrian corner at great speed to the shock and surprise of the now scattering civilians.

It looks like a Vespa scooter rent asunder, with spinning wheels at it's feet and a shining chrome blue body clad in a tattered and spiked version of Tomoko's blue hooded long jacket suffused with significant nano tech from that night on the roof. The belt she was wearing extends from either sleeve as a whipping tendril. Arteries and vines if wire and thread coil around each other where these articles meet. The song, the hymnal resonates from it. Ever mishmashes and repurposed colony.

The headlight repurposed beneath the hood of the jacket as it's face zeros in on you and charges. The while like mutating utility belt arms stretch and become bladed. People notice you, notice both of you. Some flee, others stare. Grasping the 'wrists' of this thing at the last second you pull and side step, sending the vaguely humanoid shape screaming and honking into a water fountain.

"Aaah, aren't you a delicious mishmash of murder parts," you trill.

With a snarl you surge forward as the terrible amalgamation sits up in the water fountain. The blades on the end of the tendril arms fragment and line the elongated and now segmenting belt nylon. It whips around and severs the the central column of the fountain and flail at you. The blades begin moving, grinding. They find purchase and wrap around you as you fall upon it. Wrapping around your neck, torso, arms, and legs. Coiling tightly the blades grind into you, glancing off your tightening carapace.

Your second skin shines in the rising water of your impact as you bring your first fist down and send another wall of water up into the sky. Pouring yourself into the fight you snarl and slam your fists down again and again; it doesn’t take long for this thing’s frailty to come to the fore. The coils go slack.

It is inert. The music stops. The red and black is already reaching into the puppet, it’s internals wiped of their intended function as it was slaved to the distant melody, subsonic harmonics. You haven’t felt this good since your last throw down in college. Your high off of your own violence, high and aroused from throwing your strenth about.

“Wunderbar!” there is rapid and frantic clapping above you.

Snapping your head up as you haul the vaguely human shaped machine with you, you see a translucent image floating in the mists of the fountain. He wears a white tail coat and stands with his legs tapering together at the base. His hands spread wide and you recognize his face, the laughing one from your shattering mirror is there. Green visor across his eyes and wispy white hair above middle aged european features.

“Greetings, frauline, you may call me the Maestro. I couldn’t get you to dance to my song, so I worked with what I had locally available. I do hope you can forgive my paltry efforts. I promise you the next performance will grant you a far more substantial challenge,”

“Why are you doing this?!” you growl and bare your teeth, throwing the husk of the amalgamated foe over your shoulder and flexing your wings threateningly at the projection.

The people who stayed to watch point at you and the projection. Cell Phones snap. People talk. Maestro smiles.

“Because, dear goddess, you are the first to become truly more than human. You have achieved synthesis on accident where we have failed with intent. Your evolution must be spurred, and what better way to forward nature along than with conflict?”

“You’re sick,”

The plot thickens! Now things are getting interesting...

That isn't justice

Pretty sure he's joking, anon.
That being said, Maestro will probably give us more than enough reasons to kill him in the near future.
Aside from the endangering civilians and pretty high chance of having done dangerous experiments on unwilling subjects, that is.

Something like that.
>>
>>33048433
Pretty much.

Also, I think Maestro isn't quite getting the grasp of 'evolution'. What he's doing is trying to trigger a metamorphosis into some destined final result, while evolution is just slowly adapting to an environmental change to ensure better reproductive odds.

Unless the Maestro WANTS to breed with us for some reason. But by this point he can go fuck a cactus.

He will have done things, and the accuracy/inaccuracies of his statements will be revealed.

He is but one of the Clergy.

He bears the Song.
Another will bear the burden of Canon Law.
Another will be burdened by the prayer
And so so forth.

Also, yes. Atrocities will be revealed.

I think it's a more figurative evolution, presenting Tsubasa with a challenge in order to force an adaptation, and, through observation, discover how exactly we work. His ultimate goal is to make more 'gods', after all.
In addition, the nanites let us 'evolve' in a matter of minutes; think about how quickly we got an ability to counter the Hymnal after being exposed to it.

Well, okay yeah that I can see. If we're talking a matter of watching us adapt over and over enough to get a grasp of how we work, then it's plausible.

...I just realized we're going to really need to watch for enemies trying to slip diagnostic programs in our nanite meals in an attempt to scan us.
>>

I'd like to think that the nanites are too advanced for that to work.
I mean, the ones Mori Micro and the Clergy use are all either reverse-engineered or processed in some way, but ours are just pure alien tech that bonded to us.

It's also pretty likely we have insanely advanced programs inside of us to handle that sort of thing, if the nanites even have anything resembling a program. The Hymnal was more or less a software attack, or as close as you can get with the nanites, and the nanites acted based off our will to deal with it.

That being said, we should definitely make sure nobody packs any 'surprises' into our meals.

no we won't?

So, thinking of making some rules changes.

If you choose to forgo a described defensive action (using only your passive defenses) during a combat turn and double down on offensive, you deal double damage.

If you do the same with defense, you halve any damage taken.

I'm thinking of using the die limit as you pushing against the boundaries of what's possible and generating an overflow mechanic. For every die you possess over the 25 die limit for the dice roller, you gain a +1 to any rolls of 3 you have made in your pool turning them into 4's, thous successes.

How do these expansions sound?

No objections here, I was actually wondering about something related to the rules, though.
Could certain abilities grant larger amounts of die when used in conjunction with a clever plan or a condition favorable to that ability?

For example, using something, an ability or weapon, which is exceptional at piercing armor would get a bonus die or two if the opponent was relying on their armor/carapace as a defense action that round.
So, armor piercing rounds would give +1 success to our opponents offense roll if we chose to harden, but do nothing extra if we chose to evade, Hollow point might inflict bonus wounds or something to that effect if the attack succeeds.

Plans would have to match opponents too, since things like trying to evade the attacks of someone who's fast and relies on rapid, relatively weak strikes would be harder than just reinforcing our carapace and negating his ability to hurt us whatsoever.

Feel free to shut down my suggestions, Gyoji.

What happens if no 3's? Can we put 2 overflow points into a 2 for a success, or 3 points into a 1? Or do they uselessly vanish?
