Characters and Gunpla: http://pastebin.com/UrPsGUQL

You are JACK FOULKE, an amateur Gunpla Fighter with dreams to make your own mark on the Gunpla battle scene!

Your daily lunch meeting was a bit more tense than usual today. Not really surprising, considering that you and your team were going to be getting into a ranked fight later today. Sure, it was a pretty low ranking team, but you couldn't take the outcome for granted.

"All right, so we're facing the Mole Rats today." Karen says, eying the rest of her team. "As you know, they specialize in underground maneuvering and ambush attacks. It's a highly situational skill that depends on the the field status, the we should always assume that we'll get the worst possible conditions. Since this will be our last meeting before the battle, I want to see if any of you have any input."

Tentative vote on that last one.
We now know that they are weak to fliers, so there's a chance Jake could get replaced.

If he does stick around though, it might be good to replace some ordinance he has in favor of more mine laying capabilities, grenades, or depth charge-like explosives.

>Talk more tactics.
"Charlotte played a quick match with them yesterday so I could observe their tactics. It looks like they're reliant on acoustic sensors. Staying airborne should keep them from seeing us. Jake's TUSKER doesn't have that option, but I don't want to be without heavy artillery. Being able to force them to ground at our discretion is too potentially useful. So I say we take advantage of how visible he's going to be. They're going to be gunning for him first, so let's play to that and be ready to intercept. I also should in theory be able to confuse them to Karen and my position by using the Balls, since they likely won't be able to tell much more about a target than its mass and speed. Have them impact the ground and it'll make a fair false signature. "
>>
>>33052158
"Well," You speak up, grabbing everybody's attention, "Charlotte played a practice match against them yesterday, and we managed to find out a lot. They can move very quick through soft ground like sand, but they have a lot harder time moving through solid rock. They also completely rely on acoustic sensors to detect their enemies, so if we stay airborne that will minimize their ability to find us."

"Except Jake's Gunpla can't fly." Mac points out.

"True." You nod. "But we need his firepower to pin them down. Plus his heavy guns can screw with their sensors, and if we need to, we can use him as bait to lure them out."

"Are you okay with this?" Karen turns to Jake.

"Hey, it's a tank's job to absorb hits." Jake shrugs. "If that's what I have to do, then I've got no problems."

"And if my experience is right," Charlotte adds in, "that radar of yours can be configured to act as a ground penetrating sensor. It'll work really great in soft ground, but not so much on rock. It can't go too far down, but it's better than nothing."

"Okay," You nod, "so assuming we get a level that completely favors them, meaning an all sand or soft earth field, then we'll..."

>Other
All three. We stay on the ground with Jake to scan with radar. Karen and the Balls go airborne as spotters and to swoop in when they attack. We then move towards bedrock. That way we stay mobile so they can't circle us and do wolf pack tactics, while maximizing our ability to detect them ahead of time. Jake can fire on the move now that he's gotten turret upgrades, right?

"I can stay on the ground and keep track of the enemy with my radar, in that case." You say. "Using Jake as bait would probably be too obvious."

"Then I'll stay airborne as a quick reaction force." Karen nods.

"I can live with that." Jake says. "Looks like we got our plan."

As if on cue, the bell rings, signalling lunch break was over.

"All right, we'll all meet back together after school at the gym." Karen stands up and straightens out her skirt. "I expect you all to be ready and waiting to go. That goes to the rest of you, too. There's no telling if we might need a substitute."

Everybody nods and files out the room. You kind of cruise your way through the next couple of periods, your mind focused on the battle ahead rather than your schoolwork. You also hear lots and lots of gossip going around. Apparently, word of your team's challenge against the Mole Rats had gotten out and everybody was excited, as ranked matches were actually fairly rare. You were expecting there to be large crowd after school.

"Pssst! Hey!" You hear somebody next to you whisper. You turn and see that the student who normally sat next to you was gone, replaced by a grinning boy with small, round glasses and a pencil nestled in his ear. You didn't even know that was an actual thing.

"Um, yeah?" You blink.

"You're Jack Foulke from Sorcerer Team right?" He whispers. "The one with the GM?"

"GM-Juggler." You instinctively correct him. "And why would you want to know?"

"Julian Ellet. Newspaper Club." The boy grins again. "I was hoping you'd answer some questions. I'm just a freshman and I'm trying to get a story printed, you see. I heard your team is trying to claw its way up the ranks and I thought, 'OPPORTUNITY!'. Are you wiling to answer a few questions?"

I do now. That is a delightful image. And you just know Holly loves Haro. He's the only mascot character that's a spherical robot, he's perfect for her. Like, our dad (who was a Gunpla Battler himself) gave her a little stuffed Haro toy when she was little, and then when she got into the game she wanted to play as him. But there weren't any Psycho Haro model kits around, so she went with a Ball as the next best thing, and everything spawned from there.

"After the match, maybe." You whisper back. This seemed like something Karen should handle, anyways.

"Fair enough!" Julian nods. "I"ll keep you too it!"

"Mr. Ellet, what have I told you about switching seats in the middle of class?!" The teacher grunts.

"Sorry, sir!" Julian laughs awkwardly "It won't happen again!"

"I'm sure." The teacher shakes his head, clearly not convinced.

"I'm hoping you put out a great show!" Julian winks at you.

Man, reporters. Always an odd bunch.

Finally, the last bell of the day rings and pretty much everybody is packed and out the door, much quicker than usual. You have a good idea of where they're headed. You decide to take your time and walk over, not eager to get caught in the jam.

Upon reaching the gym, you see that the entire building is packed like a sardine. Every seat and bench was pretty much taken, up to the point that the teachers started allocating standing space on the gym floor. Karen and Jake join you, while the rest of your team stays on the sidelines. The three of you walk up to the central battle table, and your three opponents likewise approach.

"ALL RIGHT EVERYBODY! ARE YOU READY FOR A GUNPLA FIGHT?!" Your school's official judge bellows.

He's answered by an impossibly loud cheer.

"THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT!" He laughs. "Today we have the Mole Rats, immovable as a rock, yet as smooth as sand!"

He pauses to let the crowd cheer.

"And their opponents today are the the mysterious newcomers, the Sorcerers!" He then gestures to you, Karen, and Jake. There's a lot of cheering, but you notice it's slightly more forced and not quite as enthusiastic.

That will change soon, you hope.

"ALL RIGHT! EVERY GET READY! GET SET!"

BEGINNING PLAVSKY PARTICLE DISPERSAL
FIELD: CAVE

"GUNPLA FIGHT GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

The moment your GM lands, you immediately scan your surroundings. It looked like you were in an extremely large cave, and up ahead was what seemed to be an underground city. Then you finally recognized it.

Jaburo.

Right now, you and Karen and Jake were standing on the cave floor. Beneath you was sand, which was the easiest medium to use your radar on, but you didn't have a lot of cover. Plus, in this cave environment, there was the real possibility they'd try to attack from above.

Up ahead was the main base proper, which would serve as cover, but all that clutter and concrete would make your sensors useless. It would also give not only your team cover, the Mole Rats as well.

To you right is a rocky area. It'd be harder for them to attack you there, but you likewise would not be able to detect if they were coming or not.

You ping your radar, but you don't seem to get any contacts. In fact, there's a lot more bedrock underneath your position than you had realized, which is messing with your possible radar coverage. Unfortunately, you have no idea if they're actually beyond your sensing range or if they're eluding your attempts to detect them. Plus, if they're using acoustic sensors, there's a high chance that they would detect your radar pings, as well.

You get some fuzzy readings. Not really any exact positions or anything, but you pick up what you think are two possible contacts, though they are pretty far. There seems like a big one, probably the Hygogg or Acguy, somewhere in the direction of the base. The other possible contact seems to be trailing behind you. It's small, so it might be the Gomel.

There is no sign of the third Gunpla.

Finally, you and Jake reach the new position and both your Gunpla settle in the soft sand. Up above, Karen and your Balls circle lazily in the air, still looking for threats.

"Hey Jake, I got some rough positions I want you to shell." You say, forwarding him the estimated coordinates of the two enemies.

"Got it." Jake nods as his TUSKER's twin cannons swivel to target both areas and begin fire with a loud BOOM. High explosive shells begin to fall among the base and sand. Fortified structures are reduced to piles or rubble, while huge gouts of sand geyser up into the air with every shell landing.

Finally, you catch movement. The Hygogg reveals itself, from its hiding place within the base. On its back you see a large rocket pod and it begins belching a swarm of missiles at your Balls and Karen. Karen immediately boosts forward through the missile swarm, intent on getting close in with the Hygogg while your Balls focus on shooting down missiles.

At the same time, there's an explosion of rock and dust from above as the Acguy reveals itself, its twin drills spinning as it targets TUSKER. Jake keeps one gun trained on the Hygogg to counterbatter, while his second cannon swivels to meet the new threat.

Your proximity warning then triggers and you look behind you to see something moving under the sand, headed towards you at high speed like a shark in water, no doubt the Gomel.

Heh, the Gomel was probably banking on you not having an advanced radar suite, which you just so happened to have. You set your beam rifle on radar guided mode, and it homes in on the largest and nearest contact it can 'see'. A sensor box forms around the Gomel's estimated position, and you can see that it's trying to burrow back into the relative safety of the sand. You need to aim fast and shoot faster.

>>
>>33056609
IIRC the beam rifle shot would be deflected to a degree due to the field containing the beam saber's energy.
>>
>>33056620
It's 2 successes and a failure, tie or not. S'far as I've followed Merc's quests, the target number is always 15 for a success. At least s'much as I can surmise.
>>
>>33056609
It gets deflected. Beam shields are technically just wide beam sabers. Very skilled pilots(often with strong Newtype abilities) can block a beam shot with a saber, but it's really hard. Though there are probably macros in Gunpla Battle that make it easier.

As it digs under, you fire several bursts from your rifle, shearing off a leg as it struggles back into the sand. While not exactly critical damage, that definitely meant its mobility would be impaired.

You do a quick radar scan see the Gomel rapidly moving away from you, no doubt trying to come back from a different direction in an attempt to ambush you again.

You take the moment to check back on how Jake and Karen are doing. Karen is having trouble getting close the Hygogg, which keeps burring into the ground whenever she gets close, only to pop up later to fire a burst of machine gun fire or missiles at her before sliding back under the ground. Your Balls are busy trying to support her, but they're too busy trying to handle the missiles to actually have time to hit the Hygogg.

Jake, meanwhile, was in something of a strange battle with the Acguy. Apparently, the Acguy could fire its drills like projectiles, and it was trying to hit Jake from above with its drill shots. However, Jake is able to maneuver or shoot the drills out of the sky, but you see one drill already stuck in the left shoulder of the TUSKER. Jake's Gunpla showers the Acguy with heavy cannon fire, which has done minor damage, the Acguy keeps repositioning to a different hole in the roof, making it difficult to score a solid hit on it.

Ignoring the Gomel for the moment, you boost into the air and head for Jake.

"Hey Jake, you need some help?" You ask.

"Yeah, I kinda do." Jake grunts over the booming of his cannons. "Can you pin down or dislodge that damn Acguy from the roof? It would be a great help for me."

"No problem. I'll be right on that." You say.

Looking at the holes in the cave ceiling, you can see the Acguy poking its head out like one of those moles in a whack a mole game. It doesn't see you quite yet, as its attention is still focused on the TUSKER.

"All yours, Jake!" You yell as you boost away to get some distance from the Acguy."

"Appreciated." Jake says as both of his cannons raise to track the fall Acguy. There's the loud boom of twin cannons and you see a flash as they score a direct hit on the Acguy. The large, round Gunpla expands like a balloon for a brief second before it's engulfed in flames, spraying fire and plastic bits everywhere.

"Holy shit, Jake, nice shot!"

"It's what I do."

Meanwhile, you're taking a closer look at the battlefield from your perspective. You can see a gout of sand about a hundred meters behind the TUSKER, no doubt the Gomel moving in to avenge its fallen comrade. Meanwhile, Karen is still having trouble with the Hygogg. You can see some minor damage on her Gunpla, but you know that with how fragile the Overflag suit, and minor damage could be considered major.

With Jake's arrival, he manages to suppress the Hygogg by literally blanketing all of the Jaburo base with cannon and rocket fire, demolishing pretty much any decent cover it may have used. The Hygogg tries to stand and outshoot the TUSKER, but that proves to be a massively fatal mistake. It emerges from the ground behind the TUSKER, intent on hitting it in the back with its missiles, only for the TUSKER's cannons to swivel around and blast it in the face point blank. The Hygogg stumbles backwards, its optics ruined by the blast before it's finished off by Karen, who drops down from above and jams both of her swords straight through the top of its head. The Hygogg stiffens before toppling to the ground like a pile of bricks.

BATTLE ENDED

"AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE SORCERERS ARE THE WINNERS!" The Judge bellows as the field begins to dissolve. "As per school rules, the Mole Rats are shifted down to rank 10 while the Sorcerers take their place at rank 9!"

The crowd begins cheering. Genuinely cheering, this time. It actually feels... pretty good. However, you know that the Mole Rats, in the big scheme of things, are small fry compared to the Gunpla Club. Still, it was a nice feeling.

"You won." Lucina says somewhat plainly as she walks up to you grins. "That was some good fighting there."

"Heh, thanks Lucina."

"And that aerial kick!" Amy chuckles. "I never thought you'd do something like that!"

"I know!" Charlotte hooks her arm around your neck. "I think we can make a pro fighter out of you ,yet!"

One of the Mole Rats, you remember his name is Ken, then walks up.

"That was a pretty good fight there, man." Ken grins as he shakes your hand. "Pretty damn intense. I don't remember when I felt something like that."

"Hah, well, get used to it." You grin. "You guys fought well, though."

"Jack! Yo! Jack!" You see Julian trying to push is way through the crow towards you. "So how about those questions?"

"Yeah, sure thing." You nod. "Actually, wouldn't you prefer to talk to our team leader?"

"Oh, sure!" Julian grins.

"Hey! Karen!" You wave for her to come over.

"Yes?" Karen walks over and looks at Julian warily.

"This is Julian Ellet from the Newspaper Club. I think he wants to interview us about the Sorcerers."

"I see..." Karen nods and gives Julian the once over. "What would you like to know?"

"Well, first of all, what inspired you to form a new Gunpla team?"

Karen pauses, as if trying to find the right words to say. After, it was important. to make things sound right.

"Well, our origin was rather humble, really. We were all mostly just Gunpla fighters who weren't accepted into any of the existing teams, so we made our own. As you can see from today, it's worked out quite well for us."

"Mhm, mhm." Julian nods as he jots his notes down. People still write on paper? "Anyways, you just beat the 8th ranked team! How do you did it?"

"Through teamwork and coordination, of course." Karen says a bit proudly. "Unlike what other fighters may believe, we don't rely solely on high end Gunpla. However, at the end of the day, our main goal is to have fun and enjoy battling. Win or lose, as long as we felt it was a good battle fought, that's what counts."

"Alright..." Julian scribbles down more notes. "Thanks a bunch! I think that's all I need for now, unless you want to add anything else?"

We're in an ambiguous future where technology has advanced incredibly in some ways but not at all in others. Also, Reconguista in G still hasn't been made somehow. It's weird. Just roll with it.

We should totally build the G-Self for our upgraded Gunpla. Just to mess with Merc as he tries to figure out how it should be balanced compared to other suits.

"Nah, I think we're done here." You say.

"Ah, well, if you want to talk about well... anything I guess, you'll know where to find me!" Julian says happily.

"Or in the mostly likely case, you'll find us." Karen grins.

"That too!" Julian chortles. "Anyways, I'll be seeing you two!"

With that, Julian filters back in the crowd.

"You don't think he's some kind of plant sent by the Gunpla Club, do you?" You ask Karen after you're sure he's out of earshot.

"Well it's certainly healthy to be cautious, there's a thin line between that and outright paranoia." Karen sighs. "I'm not sure, but he seems honest enough. He genuinely believes in what he's doing, at least."

"Ah." You nod and then your eyes narrow. "Speaking of which..."

You point to what looks to be Kenneth and a couple of his Gunpla Club goons meandering through the crowd, as if they were looking for something... or someone. You probably had an idea of who.

"Ah..." Karen frowns, the amusement draining from her face. "Of course he would be here."

A bunch of reasons. It was the first transforming mobile suit the AEUG had. It had some ridiculously powerful guns. And it had the biosensor, which is essentially space magic. It's not that impressive compared to later mobile suits, but for its time it was utterly terrifying.

"Yeah, I can live with that." Karen smiles. "Let's grab the others and celebrate. I'll pay for dinner tonight."
