Hello everyone! It's time to wrap up the game/story and get all your questions answered. Feel free to pummel me with text. I will try to be prompt and concise.

I've got all the abilities crunched in excel. I typically fluff them up a bit after you purchase them, writing them in a neat descriptive format. I'll get to that in a bit.

So, explaining the end of Shadow Quest.

I think there are two major interpretations. I want to start by saying that the ending is meant to be extrapolated upon by you, the players. I seriously doubted that a firm ending would make everyone happy; but then, not having closure also doesn't make people happy! I was a bit stuck, so I left it somewhat vague - but I'll also tell you which of the two main theories I consider 'the word of God', to provide that firm closure.

Feel free to hold out for your own personal idea. One reason I started writing is because often, I wanted books to end differently; or I'd simply ask myself questions. Like, "what would have been if THIS happened THEN?" And I would rewrite the stories in my head, coming up with new endings that I thought were as fun as the original. You should too!

So, here's what I consider canon:

1) The Shadow at the end of the story is the "Real" Shadow. His consciousness and soul, or whatever you regard as the 'self', transferred into a new body constructed by Vigil.

Here's the second major interpretation:

2) Shadow essentially stepped into a Star-Trek teleporter, and his new self could be claimed to in fact not be the original, but a copy or clone. His consciousness was merely saved as a state, and then uploaded to the new body later.

>con't
>>
You may remember the hint I dropped concerning the ending, as delivered by Vigil (I paraphrase):

>Universal State created
>State refresh each five seconds

This implies that the second interpretation is true; that for a time after your last thoughts, Shadow continued on living, completing the remodeling process. The 'new' Shadow would then be the last saved state of the old Shadow. Another important piece of evidence pointing to theory (2) is that the Wisp 'outlived' Shadow, implying that he was still alive after the moment of his last saved state.

However, that's only if you consider the physical situation without any magic/Shadow Quest Physics (tm).

Vigil does indeed keep a five-second refreshed save state of Shadow/Erebus. However, this state is only for the occasion of total catastrophic failure of the Vigil system. For all other intents and purposes, Vigil and Shadow have a constant hard link. Vigil is able to directly remove Shadow's conciouness from his body (partly through physical means, and partly by way of the lower energy grid, to which you are permanently linked), store it, and then transfer it into a newly constructed body. In the unlikely event of total system failure, Shadow's 'saved state' could instead be used to continue the mission. Wisp continued to survive because Shadow, too, was still alive, just kept onboard Vigil. The only thing remaining in the Obelisk is the reconstructed remains of Shadow's old body, inert material with no life of its own. Vigil remained in Venia for a short time, following Shadow's last orders - observing the Obelisk to ensure it was stable before moving off to reconstruct Shadow.

So then, you might ask yourself the question: "Well, gee, SM, if you like interpretation number 1 so much, why did you drop hints for number 2? Why bother saying that it was something like 'save states' in the first place? That was awfully misleading!"

>con't
>>
That's a fair point! The answer is because I didn't think everyone would take it so literally and start such a debate. I should know to be more careful with my words. I've trained you all to examine everything I write under a microscope, so I suppose that one was my fault. However, it conveniently allows people to have the interpretation of their choice, so I say, feel free.

Also, I didn't want to go out and tell you that you'd be perfectly fine at the time. I thought a hint about the fact that Vigil might have backup systems, perhaps more capability than you knew, would be a good enough setting point for me to have some flexibility in writing the ending. It was a misleading hint; I didn't communicate it very well. But it's what flew off my fingers and onto the keyboard at the time I was writing.

>con't
>>
Now, the reason for "FILE CORRUPTED" stuff was similar - I didn't want to give away the ending - but in-character, that was Erebus screwing with you. The reasons for that are complex. I would say that part of him wanted to get in one last bite at you; another part might have wanted to test your resolve, to see if you were truly committed to what he'd subjected himself to - being something of an eternal watchdog. I leave further discussion as to the nuance of motivations to the players.

I think that more or less settles it, though I'd be happy to fill in additional plotholes as needed.

Oh, and one more thing. I said "go play Eclispe Phase" last night, in response to a question about this whole thing. It seemed to really turn some people off, and, like many things I've said, was immediately interpreted in both the best light and the harshest manner possible. Well, it was 3am, and I had to get up for work, and I thought most people on /tg/ were familiar with the game, so I used it as a shorthand for the ontology debate that I didn't want to bother with at the time. Basically, I was saying, "take a look at Eclipse Phase, in which this very issue is a central theme and is not settled even within the context of the setting, and is open to different interpretations".

Upcoming is the fully revealed ability tree and the ability descriptions.

And it's exactly what I said it was. Don't get why people just couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that Shadow/Erebus and Vigil were for all intents and purposes the same thing once linked together.

1. Where did the idea of Universal Energy Grid come from?

Let's see, there's a lot going on here. Go ahead and ask me about one if you're curious.

Meanwhile, I'm going to start with the Dark Purple, because they tend to be the most ridiculous.

>Geb - Lets you call Geb like you would Hecate. Never ended up using it.

>Leviathan - The same.

>Tetramverate - combine the energy of the lesser elementals for ULTIMATE POWER BLAST (or something)

Essentially, one huge plotline that was ditched would be the situation in which Hyperion was successfully summoned to Venia. He would promptly attempt to bring back his allies. The Tetramverate would be your answer to their power, assuming you made it to Vigil, which would catalyze this action.

You might then note that the dark purple abilities tend to be very plot-related. That's true. Out of any abilities in the tree, they're the ones that changed the most as time went on. Pretty much every ability there has been replaced or heavily modified from its original state to change with the plot, or to open up new plot opportunities.

>Mercy - Resolve a soul from Chaos.

>Judgement - Immediately and completely destroy any singular entity. Grapple ability only.

The Mercy/Judgement abilities were based on a spin-off plotline in the unlikely even that Donovan Flint died. Essentially, your decisions made upon his death would reflect the power you could gain.

If you chose to stay your hand, you would gain Mercy. It's basically a single-use revive spell. So, you'd be able bring him back.

Judgement is the opposite, a consume-range instant erasure. If you went full Erebus, you'd gain the power to permanently smite something that displeased you, once only. I assumed you'd use this on Hyperion, once you could lock him into close combat.

>Unbalance - Once per day, cast a spell with no mana cost.

Unbalance was the reward for completing the Shadow Magic tree.

>Annihilation - Split the bond between your shards. Your shards are cast along ley lines to designated shadow pools. Any chaos within a sphere 3.14 miles in diameter, centered on you, is immediately annihilated.

That was a copy of the spell Erebus used to destroy all the elementals. Had you taken the route of consuming the lower elementals, I'd give you this power instead, so that you had a sacrifice trump card if all else failed. This would like lead to the much-feared repeat ending - you wake back up near a Shadow mana pool, devoid of your memories.

I think that's all the Dark Purple stuff. You can ask me about the others if you want specifics.

>1) What are the other elementals doing now? Are they sticking with their non-involvement policy?

Hecate is spending time with Adavan, who is on vacation from his new role as a professor at Archon. He used to be a teacher in his past life, and he turned his cover into a real job. At the moment, they're feeling their way through their relationship.

Geb is with the dwarves and is helping to rebuild Va'ad. He often travels to the elvish isles. You think you asking him about the conflict between the dwarves and the elves might have shifted his position, a bit - he's trying hard to split his time evenly and keep everyone happy.

Leviathan vanished for a time, but then reappeared just as Atlantis was really hitting a water crisis. He, Geb, and Stuart are working on a means of imbuing his power into a device that can emulate the old Keystone of Atlantis that was actually half his sealed body.

So, they're not ruling...but they're guiding. Strongly.

>2) What's Shadow going to do now, besides tons of intercourse?

He's acting as a special envoy on behalf of Archon, strengthening the ties that were forged during the war. He's Abigail's Shadow, when he needs to be. Not everyone in Archon is happy to go along with the new peaceful world order, so there are times she needs a little protection.

Generally, though, he stays out of the public eye.

What happened to Dave?

>1. Where did the idea of Universal Energy Grid come from?

Ian M. Banks. In one of his Culture novels, 'Excession', at the very end, a ship that has spent several decades merely building incredibly massive engines travels across the galaxy by pushing against the upper universal energy grid, and then the lower, in quick, alternating succession. It does this because if it only used one of the grids its speed would be such that it would tear the fabric of reality.

The 'Excession' itself is an unknown object that seems to be connected simultaneously with the upper and lower energy grids, which is foreign even to the super-technologically advanced Culture.

It inspired me to remix it as my own plot device.

>2. What happened to David's magicless Grey people after the Quest? (Don't answer if it's important to Edgy Quest or whatever)

Dealing with them is an ongoing matter of debate. Shadow is wondering how to approach them without triggering a negative action; he basically has to tell them that their society is built on a lie. It's an unresolved ongoing issue, but Vigil can probably handle the worse case scenario anyway.

>3. Can we get an Animal House style epilogue?

>>33053570

>Warp - Bend the fabric of reality, teleporting to any previously visited location. Instant cast. Teleports all touching individuals. (5 EXP)

A super-teleport, in essence.

>>33053580

>Shadowwrought - Sacrifice a dynamo to a summon spell. The summoned being now requires no mana to maintain, and will never break from your control.

>Totem 2.0 - Create a magical totem that fires Rays of Darkness. Same rules and restrictions apply. (17 mana)

Powerful sniper towers on command.

>Enchant - With access to a Shadow mana pool, you may grant an object one of several enchantments, if you've learned any. Most objects can hold only one enchantment.

This was a part of the game that was never really explored further. Not artifact-level by any means, but you'd be able to buff your allies with protect spells, sharpened swords, glide boots, that sort of thing.

>>33053591

Not really. I was bothered by how much I was planning, and the fact that people thought I was railroading so much. I designed Artifact as an anti-railroading device. Basically, I wanted you to be able to slap your hand down and go "fuck this shit and fuck it right now!"

It was really when I realized I'd undermined my own intentions that I decided I had to go back and apologize.

You have the description for Vigil.

All Revealed Ability Descriptions:

http://pastebin.com/LMq32gnV

>>33053671

>Star Ring - Friendly targets within fifty yards gain powerful regeneration and magical protection. The spell is set into the ground, and allies must stay within its radius to keep the buff. The caster can move, but can cast no other spells while the buff is active. (18 mana)

>Haste - Bends time around the target, hastening them relative to the world. (allies become much more powerful. If you target yourself, all rolls gain an automatic +35 bonus for two turns. Any combat roll 95+ is a super critical. Crit failures nullified. Once per day.)

>con't
>>
>Higher Ranks of Summoning

Summoning III gives full control over all summons, and I'd allow you to submit your own templates to me for consideration. Basically, creature creation power.

Summoning IV cheapens summons, allows you to control two summons at once, and generally makes me more flexible on the sorts of templates I allow you to create.

The Summoning completion bonus would allow you a point system for summons, like Fang had, allowing you to control a large number at a time. You'd also get Bone Titan as a summon, and a mana bonus.

The Spirit tree completion would permanently add a die to your pool; four dice to be considered.

The Earth tree would permanently increase your health, physical defense, and give you another point of regeneration per turn, for a total of 5.

Unlocking all dark-grey and black abilities, including Vigil, would double your mana.

Unlocking all abilities in every magic tree would give you the ability to design your own spells (submitted to me, like templates).

Unlocking every single ability would give you a special power called Inquisition of Essence, which would render a target totally invincible for three turns. That ability could only be used twice.

You can see that I planned for a lot of eventualities that did not occur.

No, I never seriously considered a Light tree, though some of the wilder player theories made me think about different possibilities.

Most of the tree-completion abilities were roughly hashed out and then finalized upon posting.

The Archonium is a link to the world of dreams, though it intentionally splits the soul of the person that enters.

>>33053882

The world of dreams is an alternate dimension concurrent with Venia that is formed by dramatic interaction between Order and Chaos. Basically, if Venia is the laboratory concoction sitting in a beaker, then the world of dreams is the wafting smoke.

It's not within the Nether, but it reflects the Nether, in part. It also reflects Venia. When people dream, their natural connection to the core of chaos flares up - there's a sort of potential, there, in the will of that many sentiences, that many souls. This manifests itself in the dreamworld.

It's something I'd like to have explored further, and fleshed out more deeply, but the plot sort of drifted away from that, quite early on, really.

>>33053798

Yeah. I had this idea that you'd solve Donovan's problem relatively early - get embroiled in Arland politics, somewhat. Go on a quest to get a doohickey to remove the curse of the demon parasite, that sort of thing. And then you'd adventure around, being valiant knights errant and restoring Aeolus's Order; meanwhile hunting for clues as to your origins.

The plotline involving Abigail escalated into high-power realms far more quickly than I'd predicted, effectively cutting off that whole series of adventures. Atlantis would have been one of your destinations, I'm sure, and Joey's coming of age and romance with the princess would have gotten a lot more screen time.

>>33053808

>If I may ask another question, how hard was it to balance things in Shadow Quest? Mechanically speaking.

Well, one major goal was to make every ability useful, if not entirely relevant. I feel I was relatively successful.

Balancing was very difficult. The problem I had was that I wouldn't know how balanced things were until you were in the thick of things, throwing punches. I adjusted on the fly.

Picture related. It shows many of the hidden statistics of Shadow Quest. This is a saved version from when your Water resistance had reached its peak relative to the other elements, right after you got the Waterborne tree bonus.

>>33054723

I really liked him too. He was a good motivating mystery for a large duration of the quest - a strange piece of a past you didn't know you had, something to be feared, but something you wanted to understand. I like the way it turned out.

>>33054732

The original premise of Shadow Quest I had in mind was thus:

You arise from mana, a uniquely sentient Shadow Elemental of increasing and seemingly unbounded power. You discover that, while some of mankind is noble, most of it is greedy, ignorant, and selfish, and you find them wanting. Raising with you those few of whom you approve, you strike out against the interplaying nations of the world, cutting a swathe through their petty rivalries and endless wars to great a utopian protectorate and reforge the world in your vision.

It didn't really turn out that way.

>>33054817

Well, here was the question I had to overcome: Erebus stands as a mysterious figure, bent on the destruction of the other elementals and the world itself.

Why?

Answering that question kept me up a few nights. What could Erebus's motivations possibly be? Why would he want to destroy the world? What was the point of the plans that had more layers than a rotting onion?

I reached back for inspiration. Ian M. Banks is one; the other is the Saga of Recluse series by L.E. Modesitt. Modesitt in particular cultivates the order-chaos dynamic, and his series in encyclopedic in its breadth, covering major events and many characters over several thousand years of history in his fantasy world. It also has streaks of science fiction; the world of the book is a parallel world that space-faring races accidentally transport themselves to; they have no way back, so they're forced to settle down, while making use of their strange new magical abilities.

>>33054943

Well, I've got two ideas on my plate.

1) Modern day, with fantasy. (9 Lives Quest)

2) Near future (Virtual World Quest)

Which one I do depends on what Arcadian does. He's an excellent QM, and he runs a virtual-world type quest called Quest for Arcadia. He's currently on extended hiatus. As far as I'm concerned, he's doing as good a job as I could possibly do, so I've got no impulse whatsoever to tread on his turf. However, his hiatus has a chance of going permanent...so we'll see.

In any case, 9 Lives Quest would be relatively short compared to Shadow Quest (perhaps 30 threads, or less) so I might just run that anyway.
>>
Could we have made Xella permanentlike Abby's mom?
>>
Late to the thread and too busy to read it right now, so I'll have to look at it later, but thanks for the good times, SM.
Something that may or may not have been praised about you is your choice of music. Immortal at the end there was an especially nice choice, and a very great song to end our journey on. I feel like, should the SQ novel become a thing, people are missing out on part of the fun without the music.
Hell, if this book you got coming up here goes over well enough, maybe you could work out a deal with TSFH and distribute a CD with the book to be played at certain parts. Kek.
In all honesty though people HAVE done music CDs to be read with their books before and it'd be kickass if that would work out, though I really doubt it.

Thanks! I tried to think on the music selections quite a bit. Often, I designed scenes with the music already in mind, or changed descriptions or other details to match the songs. More often, though, the songs were picked to fit with Shadow Quest.

I had vague ideas and basically winged it. Or rather, I didn't have to - you, the players, were more concerned with making sure the prophecies were fulfilled than I was.

Same design.

If you waifued Ila, I imagine that the story itself would be somewhat similar, though the character development would definitely change.

If Donovan had not pulled you out of the river on the way out of Abigail's hometown, after the Kanian attack, you would have met Ila a lot earlier. That might have changed things in her favor quite a bit.

pls answer this

>>33055752
Vigil waited a month. It took three years for the actual recreation process to be finished.
>>
>>33055696

A few times, I almost did it.

There was only once I actually fudged the rolls to make Shadow live. That was in that first battle against the Kanians, way back in Jacob's Field. The explosion of fire should have killed you.

I waffled. I could have ended the quest there - your sacrifice was enough to delay the Kanians and allow Donovan and the villagers to escape. They were able to warn the Duke of Kelvere in time to turn the tides of the war.

But the quest was going places. I was having more ideas hand over fist. People were getting into it, really getting invested. We'd laid the foundations of a much larger plot, a much larger world. The audience was starting to grow as the tension ramped up.

So, I kept things rolling. A good decision, I think.

In Xile I almost killed you. And then, one other time, back in that tunnel in Tarun Gakth, when you were running from the Vog.

Donovan's son would promise to always make sure Abby's daughter was protected, just like his dad did!
>>
>>33055752
>Why did Erebus create an AI when AI were known to be predisposed to chaotic behavior?
He wasn't an AI initially
>If Shadow wasn't initially an AI, why was he able to help the elves? Why wasn't he preprogrammed to side with the dragon?
Despite not being a true AI at first, he did have the capacity to make some decisions in order to complete his objective. His pre-programming was fucked up by the annihilation event. David breaking the Sword shard caused there to be a massive chance for memory damage
>Why did Erebus program Vigil to recognize an AI/program as himself?
Because that's how computer stuff works in this universe. It was explained during Erebus' backstory. AI weren't really a thing, so they based AI-like things off of the user's own mind.
>Why would Vigil wait three years to recreate Shadow?
Just guessing here, but most of Vigil was sacrificed to the restructuring. I don't think it had the facilities required to recreate Shadow's body and Shadow told it to monitor the Obelisk before rebuilding him. After it observed for a long enough time to be sure that the chance of failure was down to acceptable levels, it went off to repair itself.
>>
>>33055815
Would Abby's daughter also look like El'lora?

>>33055797
>Are you sticking to Two Steps, or are you going to branch out to other groups for your next quests?

>>
>>33055839
I was under the impression that Erebus and Vigil were basically the same thing, fully compatible with each other but partitioned for efficiency
and shadow was only 'programmed' as much as Erebus was, being a robot turned into an order conduit, so when shadow was wiped of his predisposed commands, he was still recognizable as user Erebus because he was just part of erebus
Please correct me if I'm wrong, I think I may of made a lot of this shit up in my head, it's been a long journey

>Why did Erebus create an AI when AI were known to be predisposed to chaotic behavior?

Erebus didn't create an AI. Vigil is a supercomputer that does not operate unless linked to Erebus.

Basically, all of its processes must travel through Erebus's head, grounding it in reality. It is essentially a startship that is also a massive mechanical augmentation device for the pilot.

You could argue that this blurs the line between human and machine, but that's the point. Old humanity realized they needed to bridge the gap; they needed that kind of power to fight chaos, but they needed to ground it in human values to prevent it from going haywire.

>If Shadow wasn't initially an AI, why was he able to help the elves? Why wasn't he preprogrammed to side with the dragon?

His programming was loading up. Had you taken another path instead of following the elves, you would have found the destroyed gateway back to Vigil. It would have alerted you to your true purpose.

Or something. I didn't really have that much plot determined back then.

>Why did Erebus program Vigil to recognize an AI/program as himself?

Vigil can't tell the difference. It's like wondering why Vigil didn't recognize your left arm as part of yourself.

>Why would Vigil wait three years to recreate Shadow?

It was gathering raw matter and energy from the star. It was a three-year process.

>>33055995

Didn't bother formalizing them because they weren't needed for player consumption.

>>33056024

Argh, that requires a lot of thinking which I don't have. Donovan has basically taken Sandalphon's spot when considering he doesn't have nearly as much flexibility. He only beat Sandalphon via surprise.

Abigail is higher than that, now.
>>

>>
>>33056221
Nyx. Galatea. Laura.
>>
>>33056049

Sandalphon was a young man when his home was vaporized by the war. He was in the vanguard of his lord's army, and through his skill in battle and magic had risen to about the highest rank a commoner could obtain.

They were invading a small neighboring country to forcibly add it to their federation when they received news that their kingdom had been ransacked by a fight between Hecate and Raijin. In the next battle, Hecate's forces showed up in order to take down Sandalphon's king's army. It was a brutal battle, but Sandalphon led his men out of the fire.

They incurred heavy losses. The king was dead, along with many of the commanding nobles. Sandalphon took charge of the situation. Without a home to return to, they became a mercenary company, surviving from the pay for fighting battles for other lords and kings. Sandalphon's company became renowned for their direct and effective approach to battle.

Eventually, they came to develop a sort of home base, protecting a large swath of land from the ravages of the turning tides of war in exchange for support of the local people. In time, Sandalphon adopted to the role of protector and lord. Eventually, Hyperion approached him while uniting local kingdoms in an attempt to end the fighting between human nobles within the territory he'd decided to establish.

From there, the rest is history.

>>33056147

Probably Edge Lord.

>>33056178

Sure, I mentioned them earlier. Donovan dying was a major one. Hyperion somehow being summoned would definitely press that good ending to a backburner. Eating the other lesser elementals would definitely change the playing field. Going to war with the Ring City at any point would have drastically changed the plot.
>>
>>33056224
>Void Quest

I'm not familiar.

Mass Effect definitely has a little thread in Shadow Quest, though. I used the Vigil theme from ME1 for Humanity back in the Archonium.

Humanity's flame reminded me of the flickering Vigil hologram at the bottom of the ruins.

Yeah. I was thinking of names for Erebus's craft. All my ideas were shit.

Then I thought back to that music. Vigil was perfect.

>>33056361

Nah. Let you imagination fly where it will.

>>33056379

Honestly, dicey moments aside, writing the big story reveal when you finally reached Vigil was probably the most intense moment. For me, that was the culminating point of a year of work, the moment when I reveled in kicking over the sandcastle you'd built only to reveal one of twice the size and detail.
>>
>>33056485
What are the odds of Venia shitting out a few more sentient elementals at some point?
>>
>>33056384

He was of competitive strength, even though he hadn't maxed out his potential. Remember that Erebus was always by far stronger than the others, taken as individuals.

Well, that wraps it up for me. I've got work early tomorrow.

Feel free to PM me on twitter if you've got a specific question you want answered.

I will be posting a link to my book within the next few weeks, once I get my feedback from my beta-readers.

I'll keep you updated when I have time for Edgy Quest. I've really got to hit the books and grind through my summer classes, so it might be a good month or two.

I might post in the /qtg/ here and there, if there's a topic worth discussing.

Thanks everyone. I'll see you later!
>>
>>33056485
Despite the battle more or less being dictated by the RAILROAD mandate, I have to praise you for the battle against Metatron. I felt that it really captured the essence of urgency and frantic light-on-your-feet thinking that you'd need to topple the challenge. It was long enough to feel like an epic struggle, and I was happy for that.

I think that's partially why the battle against Sandalphon and Chaos felt kinda underwhelming. You'd have all these drawn out epic slugfests before, and towards the end things sorta wrapped themselves up fast.
>>
SM.

I love you.

No homo, unless you roll that way.

Really, though, you better keep that twitter updated. I know you will, but do it anyway.
I wanna get that cheap copy of your book so I can read it, then buy three more copies so you can have my money.
This quest has been part of my motivation to keep going during some shitty times over this past year, because, despite the assholes scattered about and the problems we encountered, there's nothing quite as fun as being part of a story, and this story has been one that I've enjoyed almost every aspect of.
I can't find a picture with a big enough smile and enough tears to describe how I feel right now, but I'm sure whatever comes next will be just as fun.

Edgy quest sounds like totally off-the-walls unfiltered silliness too.

Mushy shit aside, can we get a tentative start date on that, or do you just wanna chill out for a while?
>>
>>33056485
Did Erebus really just contrive this all so he could have one last fun fight and lost without using all his potentials so somebody else could carry on the struggle against chaos?
>>
>>33056485
Yeah, the whole encounter with Erebus was probably the climax for me. I mean, there may have been moments that felt bigger to me earlier on, but once the bomb was dropped about Erebus Anderson, original human, the rest really paled in comparison.
It really did feel like a mask that I just realized I was wearing fell off and revealed OH WAIT HUMANITY ASCENDED HE'S FROM EARTH FUCKING WHAAAT?

>>33056563
Also gotta agree that the Metatron fight was probably the best combat we had. Try to aim for that in any future boss fights for serious quests.
>>
>>33056575
All Erebus wanted was for real life to be just like his fantasy combat simulations.

So he made that a thing, had his fun, and passed the controller.

But he's an asshole and left cheeto dust all over the controller before he passed it
>>
It's been fun, anons.

Good on you for sticking with us.

We'll see you in Edgy Quest.
>>
>>33056542

>>33056563

Yeah, to be honest, I was running out of stamina. Shadow Quest needed to end. I consider myself a determined person that finishes the projects he starts, but I have physical limits.

I had three stages planned for Chaos...but, well, I just could taste the ending, and I decided to end it.

Metatron was one of my favorites, too.

>>33056571
>Mushy shit aside, can we get a tentative start date on that, or do you just wanna chill out for a while?

Thanks for the thoughts and the feelings, good sir.

I'm gonna take a break for classes for a bit. I'd expect Edgy Quest in a month or two.

Once pharmacy school starts, things are going to be ka-raayyyzeee. It's an accelerated program; I'm doing the usual six years in three years. Edgy Quest will probably be squeezed in the evenings and weekends, but because it won't be so serious I'm sure I can make it work.

>>33056575

Again, I leave the discussion of Erebus's character, and motives, to you.

>>33056625
>Also gotta agree that the Metatron fight was probably the best combat we had. Try to aim for that in any future boss fights for serious quests.

Definitely. It really caught that sense of urgency I wanted. The battlefield was a clock ticking down around you, and Metatron was a powerful foe in a small space that was to his advantage. You had two allies, too - not too many as to be confusing, but enough to help you out on those bad rolls.

Good night, SM. Sweet dreams!

SM's last sentence, in his last post, in his quest's last thread, is Turbo Adavan Extreme Siege Mode

I wouldn't have it any other way.

I had a whole speech ready to go, but now I just say:

Hell yeah, motherfuckers! Good night and enjoy your weekends, all you elegan/tg/entlemen!
>>
For all those chaps who had written grand speeches, tearful long good-byes, inane but heartfelt ramblings, or even those few with snippy rants that chose to not post them at the last second, I'd just like to say that no matter how bad or cringe-worthy you thought they were, this anon would have clapped and thanked you. Thanks for the thought fellas.

Just remember everyone.
Somewhere.
There is a Shadow.
And that Shadow has a rainbow.

What a ride.. also, I'd been meaning to post this in one of the threads, but these things always run so late, and I have work on weekdays (the threads start at 2AM my time, and I need to be up at 7AM)..

I kinda like this idea as a 'theme' or motif for Erebus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ufnoiz4ZCOw If you contemplate him as a tragic entity that can't break out of his past prejudices, a lot of the lyrics are rather fitting for him - especially in this 'kind of post-apocalyptic' world.

So hard to believe it's finally over. It's been one hell of a ride. I'm kind of sad to have it finally end. But I can't really blame SM. He worked so hard for so long on Shadow Quest, and he allowed it to finally reach its ending. And thus, it ends. What more can we ask for? So thank you SM, you beautiful bastard. Thank you for this beautiful story.

The thing that made me really like Erebus' character is he was a human that had to live with never dying. After living so long, believing the same thing, he most likely began to doubt his mission somewhat. The line where he apologized to Flint, claiming that if this were another place and time, they could have been friends showed that he DID have doubts. However, he was so committed to his mission, that he ignored his doubts. He had fought Chaos before, and thought this was just a trick to fool him. He had lived as a weapon for so long, that he only knew how to kill. He refused to see things any other way, because he was unable to see things any other way. He had lived so long seeing things this way, that if he were to change his beliefs, then what did he live for? What did he stay behind for? Did anything matter anymore for him? Erebus needed to destroy it all, otherwise he would have, in a sense, destroyed himself.
Him letting Shadow kill him was him acknowledging that perhaps he was wrong, that this perhaps was NOT an illusion. But he knew that he could not sit idly by and let chaos spread. He had lived so long trying to prevent that. So instead, he finally allowed himself to die, so that his mission would finally be over.

MAGICAL BUOY QUEST WHEN?!

All good things must come to an end, anon.
We had a good run.

Besides, the best part about Shadow Quest is that it ended, the last thing I'd want is for it to reach 300 threads.

>read shadow quest in my spare time on suptg, didn't know it hadn't ended
>stop for a fuckton of time.
>get on 4chan for the first time in a while
>find this
GOD DAMN it. if i had kept reading shadow quest, I could have actually contributed. SM- know that whilst i wasn't in any threads, I'm still an avid follower of this quest. thanks for making it

Posting my thanks, SM.

This quest was truly based and perhaps one of the greatest ever seen on /tg/.

How about Knight Abby vs Empress Abby? Or the Erebus battle in virtual reality? Or the first time we Pocketed an airship?

I've been following from the start and I can easily say this is one of the best quests I participated in.

I'll miss our little blob of nightmares. Never stop gobbling those knobs, mr. shadow.

>>IMPLYING YOU DON'T HAVE ONE MORE DICE ROLL LEFT FOR YOUR GOOD ENDING

Hey, just so you know, the last dice roll of the quest, very after the ending - was a 1.

The dice held out, delivered twenties and one hundreds, and IMMEDIATELY after the ending, i forgot to take my dice off and a one happened.

Enjoy your RNG-irony, sm.

And thanks for the ride. I've been here since really, really early.

And for the record - the experiment worked. I was able to have WAY more influence while anon, and called a number of things, such as dave being useful for the ending because of chaos-order mixes.

This has really come a long way. I still remember complaining that crits from ten rolls leads to too many crits. Of course /tg/ changed my idea of having normal crits in the first few rolls and mini-crits in the later rolls to having super-crits in the first few rolls and normal crits in the later rolls, but whatever.

I hope your future endeavors will be at least as successful.
