It's been a busy day.

You managed to "persuade" the Immaculate agents sent to Tianna to back off and return to the Realm. You're sure this isn't the last you'll be seeing of them, and that they might even return with a full Wyld Hunt maybe, but at least you bought some time.

...And, you met with Phoenix, the Abyssal that's been spying you, and managed to buy some more time there as well: He promises that you won't get backstabbed by them for one week.

One week to find the Black Island, solve the Lintha problem, sink or rout their demon ship, put your hands on their treasure, make the sea around Tianna safe for trade again, and re-invest all that booty into the city of Pearl.

And pay the prospectors which you have required to inspect the "new land" created where the Wyld has retreated, as well. Finding useful metals would be a boon on an island as poor in useful ores as Tianna is.

Of course, you'll have to meet again with Phoenix, and bring Mikahil. You know he has the power to sanctify and enforce oaths.

...And, Phoenix also mentioned an exchange of hostages.

Choosing someone to be sent to the Abyssal's place (wherever that is) is NOT a responsibility you want to have, but this entire deal is your idea... you can't exactly ask someone else to come up with a name.

With these heavy thoughts on your mind, you return to the roof of Tianna castle.

>Sleep here (alone, you don't want to talk about this with others for now.)
>Sleep here (in Amata's bed. But don't tell her anything.)
>Sleep here (in Amata's bed. Hear her opinion.)

It's been a while. Sorry, but I've been busy with lessons and with stuff.

Let's get back on track.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble recently Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She's in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata, an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and the Realm is probably planning to get rid of you.
But things are also looking up. You have gathered a lot of allies, have a powerful Manse under construction, and are unifying Tianna in a great nation under your overwhelming charisma.

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zenith

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

>Twitter?
@exaltedfag

As usual, if you have any questions, ask them in the thread.

WIth a few easy leaps, you reach the roof of the castle from the city. Learning how to use your Essence to propel you through the air in higher jumps is a neat trick, in fact. Useful, too.

It's late, and everyone is likely asleep. You walk around the dark corridors of the castle, remembering their layout by heart, silently as to not wake up anyone. Finally, you reach the royal bedroom.

...and notice a sliver of light from under the door. She's awake? At this time?

For a moment you suspect she might still be working, but... well, she'd do that in her study, not in the bedroom.

Maybe she's reading a book? you consider the idea for a moment, before noticing soft noises coming from inside. Her voice and the voice of someone else. A man, but you can't recognize it or understand what they're saying. Maybe if you got closer...

>A bit of eavesdropping never hurt anyone, and now you're curious.
>She's busy, you'll come back later.

These habits need to stop.

Honestly, some of the secrets I'm okay with her keeping.
As much as I'd like to know the deal with her husband is, I understand that it's probably a painful memory, given that he's no longer around.
But the things relevant to the Abyssals? That's shit we NEED to know. People are going to die if we can't stop them. If she know WHY they're so interested in Tianna, she needs to be sharing that information.

You fight your impulse to make your presence known, and quietly approach the door.

"...kind of sand makes an uniform layer everywhere on the island." That's Amata's voice.

"...I can't believe it." That's... Mikahil's voice? You weren't expecting that. "But Tianna has mountains, too. How is that possible? There's even a volcano!"

"I'm not sure of the details. I wasn't the one who did it, after all." She replies. "But it's a good camouflage."

"It's not just good, it's amazing." He sounds almost out of breath. "...The Lintha?"

"I'm fairly sure that they have no idea. But the Abyssals obviously know. That's why they want the island."

"...And what would they do with it?"

"Honestly? I have absolutely no idea. They're not acting like they're your stereotypical insane mass murderers. Their motives are the biggest puzzle in all this." She makes a short pause. "...Of course, our oath extends to this conversation as well. You are to not mention this to anyone, for any reason, ever, without my consent."

"...Does Maka know about it?" Mikahil asks back after a few seconds of what you imagine must have been stunned silence.

"...No. No, she's probably suspecting something, but I never told her anything."

"Why not?" He asks back.

"You know Maka. She's bad at sneaky, stealthy stuff. Isn't that right, Maka?"

What?

"You can come in now, Maka. I know you're there. Oh, close the door behind you."

You sneak inside the room and quietly lock the door behind you.

Amata is in her bed, in her pajamas, relaxed. Mikahil is sitting on a chair nearby, by the window. Frowning.

"...You were spying on us?" He asks you.

"It's okay, Mika. Don't hold it against her. I HAVE been keeping secrets from her for a while now." She turns to you. "For good reasons."

You roll your eyes, sitting down on the corner of the bed. "You don't trust me to keep a secret."

"That's part of the reason." She cheerfully admits. "But it's also a secret that I've sworn to protect. So, if I told you, I would have been the one who doesn't keep secrets."

You just stare straight at her, annoyed, but without saying anything.

"...I think it's time I show you at least something. We're probably at the point where not knowing would be more harmful than knowing." She nods to herself. "But, would you tell us what transpired from your meeting with the abyssal first?"

You tell her everything. Well, ALMOST everything. The redemption part is a solar thing, after all. It doesn't concern her. It's not important anyway.

You also learn from Mikahil that Valeriana has been finding bits and pieces of Orichalcum and trying to put them to good use, which is great news.

And... you also learn about Valeriana's doubts on the weirdness of Tianna.

After the chat is over, Amata looks at you, very seriously, and says:

"...By now, you've probably noticed that the island of Tianna is somewhat off, right?"

You nod vigorously. "A lot of things don't really add up."

"It's a secret that I'm keeping." She explains. "I have sworn oaths and made promises. I am the queen of Tianna, but my job is also to protect this secret that has been entrusted to me." She brushes her hair back, a bit nervously perhaps. "...But now we have reached the point where not sharing it with you, who are helping me to keep it safe from the Abyssals, might be more dangerous than keeping it."

You cross your arms and wait for the full story, but instead she just stands up from the bed and takes your hand.

"...What?" You ask.

"I can't tell you about it, but I can show it to you. On one condition: You must swear that you're going to keep this secret, and never share it with anyone else. Not even to someone you trust blindly. Not even to Tia, for example."

You think about it. Tia isn't exactly the best person you can imagine when it comes to keeping secrets.

...this must be how Amata feels about you.

You nod. "I promise. Do you want Mikahil to seal the oath?"

She squeezes gently your hand. "...I might not trust you to not let some words slip by, but I trust you to be honest with what you promise." She says, gently pulling you out of the room. Mikahil is left behind.

"...Where are we going?" You ask her, noticing that she's dragging you towards the dungeons. All she replies with is: "...Don't ask me anything. Just keep your eyes open. You'll have to figure it out on your own."

You are pulled into the underground levels of the fortress, a large first-age armory with racks upon racks of magitech parts and weapons, most of them damaged or partially assembled or disassembled.

This looks like Amata's workshop, where she takes apart multiple damaged artifacts to assemble functioning ones. It has a massive guard detail, with dozens of soldiers and essence weapon emplacements behind thick stone fortifications, chokepoints, killzones and overlapping lines of fire.

You're taken through all those defenses in a rush, so you don't have time to analyze them properly, but you get the feeling that even a full Realm legion would have some trouble if they tried to take the armory by storm.

Then... Amata pulls you to an empty wall at the end of a corridor. Racks full of strange magitek parts line the walls to either side, but the one you're in front of has nothing.

"...Don't tell me, secret passage?"

She smiles smugly. "...Look away and close your eyes until I tell you you can open them, Maka."

One of the only things I don't like about EF's modified system is that, the way we've played Maka, our Athletics score should be 3/4 by now, while our stealth/larceny should be a 2 at most. And if we raise Night to improve our Athletics, out Stealth/Larceny would go up alongside it, which to me at least would be some Maka wouldn't care about raising in Vanilla Exalted

It takes almost a full minute, that you spend entirely with your eyes closed, for Amata to finish... whatever she's doing.
You heard mechanical noises, magical-ish noises, felt surges and flows of essence, and flashes ans shifts of light, as well as a light sense of vertigo and acceleration.

You have NO IDEA what happened, but when Amata tells you "it's okay now", you open your eyes to find yourself somewhere else: At the end of what looks like a roughly-dug cave, tunneling into solid rock and snaking downwards at a rather steep angle.
The floor is cut into uneven steps, forming a dangerous-looking stairway flowing down along the path. The air is dry and hot. There is no light save a long copper scepter that Amata is carrying, with a hexagonal prism set on the tip shedding a bright white light. Some sort of magical torch.

She starts walking down, and you follow her.

"...I thought that Tianna was soil all the way down?" You ask.

She doesn't answer. Looks like she means to keep silent while down here.

You follow her, keeping your mind busy.

Mental + Zenith = 1 3 2 3 10 8 = 3 successes

You're not 100% sure, but... you don't feel like you've been spun or turned around (thought what Amata activated was probably either a moving platform, or a lift going down, or both), so, judging by the direction you're going to... this tunnel is heading towards the volcano, wile reaching deeper underground at the same time.

(narration will continue assuming you follow Amata's tour, but feel free to ask any question or request any action of Maka.)

You travel down for a long, long time, step after step. Everything feels same-y, almost to a mind-numbing degree. For a bit, you feel like you're going crazy. The further you go down, the hotter and dryer it feels, to the point where you get the impression that your skin might fly off you any second now.

The pressure, the impulse, the drive to just call it quits, bet back upstairs and take a cold bath is overwhelming. Fighting it might have been one of the strongest efforts of willpower you've ever done.

But finally, FINALLY, you reach SOMETHING.

At a certain point, the corridor splits.

One side stays more or less level, no longer moving further underground, and at the end of it you see a dull, red light. A flow of incredibly hot air comes from that direction.

The other path heads down even faster, to the point that it starts to look more like free-climbing than walking down a stairway. That direction is darker and cooler, and also somewhat spookier: you feel a distant metallic echo of any noise you make bouncing back to you from that direction.

Amata looks at you, as if inviting you to pick one.

You begin to climb down the passageway. Amata follows you.

It doesn't take long before you end up in a horizontal corridor at the bottom of the well. The floor is metal, as are the walls, lined with pipes and machinery. You're clearly inside a First Age structure.

The place feels ancient, with a thick layer of dust over everything. The outer layers, where the structure is in contact with the island's rock, are basically crushed, but now that you're deeper inside, it feels fairly intact.

And the structure seems to be made from that brass alloy that was found as sand in a strata of the island's soil.

...If it was found both around Tia's tribe AND near Pearl... just how large IS this structure? It should be as large as the island itself...

You wander around the corridors. This wasn't built underground. There's no rock or stone used in its construction, anywhere, not even for walls or pavements. It's all metal and machinery.

You're seeing... barracks, training rooms, workshops, but also larger corridors acting as roads with more civilian-style housing and even... is that a shoes store? This place had even shops.

Everything is a strange mix of a military installation and a civilian area, built to resemble what you imagine must have been a densely-packed first-age city. But it's all built on levels, in three dimensions, and as a single, giant unit. Everything is connected and built together.

"...You know, at first I imagined that this big secret would be some sort of first age factory. But this isn't a factory." You know she's not going to reply, but you still voice your thoughts out loud. "...what IS this?"

You start wandering around, inspecting here and there.

There's a few bones and signs of struggle here and there. They've clearly been picked clean by scavengers, probably by Amata herself (or people working for her). Some desperate struggle has been fought here, but it's impossible to understand exactly what happened.

Exploring the ancient structure, you finally reach what must be an external wall. It has a round window, still intact, looking towards a wall of sand and soil pressing against it. This thing is completely buried. But.

You use the window to check the walls' thickness. Even if your perception might be distorted by the refraction, it feels like it's about two meters trick, or even more.

Nearby, an open door to the "outside" has been flooded with soil rushing in and blocking the passage. It features a door that can probably slide open and back closed if activated by some machinery, but what's more interesting is the fact that the soil has clearly been recently dug to unearth something beneath it. And you see a swivel mount.

"...There was an artillery piece mounted here. I guess you took it, right?" You glance at Amata.

She stays silent.

Mental + Twilight = 6 8 9 1 = 2 successes

"...This wasn't a building or a base. It's all too sturdy and uniform. And that kind of artillery emplacement..." You turn to her. "...Was this a giant ship? A floating fortress or city?"

You climb back up and head down the other corridor.

You're feeling... frustrated for the lack of straight answers, but happy that you get to explore this place and finally understand what the fuss is all about.

So, there's a gigantic structure under the island. Even though it was picked clean by Amata, it's enormous and it was clearly designed for military purposes.

However, it's completely buried. Why do the Abyssals want it? They think they can surface it? Without completely wrecking the island above? No, how would they even do it, even in that case?

You're getting closer.

This corridor is... incredibly hot. You're fairly sure that a mortal would have fainted by now. The heat is almost unbearable, and the further you go in, the hotter it is. Past a certain point, you're sure that your clothes would have caught fire if they weren't made from gossamer.

Finally, you reach a vast, open round room, or rather cave. Or rather, caldera, because a massive scalding lake of lava occupies most of it, filling it with warm, noxious fumes.

You glance up and see a sliver of clear night sky.

"...DANCING SMOKE?!" You scream.

"Bluh? Wha?" Startled by your scream, the goddess in question springs up from the lava, half-asleep and frantic (and naked). "What the heck-" She turns around, confused, and sees you. She screams, covering herself up and reimmersing herself in lava up to the waist.

"What are you acting embarrassed for? After all the stuff we did?" You sigh.

"...Maka? What are you doing here? How did you get down here?!"

You point back. "I used the passage."

"...There's no passage." She replies, looking at you like you have three heads.

You turn around. It's there. Can't she see it?

So I was thinking, we would probably be best to go to the Abyssals for the hostage exchange, it would be pointless to send in someone strong or sneaky considering they would be kept a close eye on by 4 or 5 other Solaroids, but if it's us we could talk some info out of them or even sway some of them to our side

I think I got a theory about what is going on.

This complex is some kind of fast travel system keyed to either specific points around Tianna, or possibly throughout Creation
>>
Rolled 6

>>33061932
More likely it's a fast travel system around itself.

This flying thing sounds like a flying city that was buried and the island of Tianna was formed around it.

The city might have had some kind of internal subway analogue so the inhabitants could get to where they were needed.
>>

>>33061932
Maybe, it would be super useful for when we head to to Gem and it would clear up Phoenix being shifty about him not wanting a weapon exactly

If a god of a volcano can't see a passageway into the volcano that they are assigned to then first age dickary is obvously involved.

"Oh, hi, Smoke." You nod at her while casually removing your tabard. You can see Amata hanging back and laughing.

"Don't- What do you mean, hi?" The poor goddess is at her wits' end. "Don't be so casual about this- Wait, how did you get here- DON'T ACT LIKE THIS IS NORMAL! WHY ARE YOU TAKING A BATH IN MY LAVA POOL?!"

"Well, I thought I'd join in." You reply, swimming next to her. She's still defensive, though. "I didn't know your volcano went in... so deep."

"It- it's a very private thing! I don't remember inviting you here!"

"Oh, believe me, I just ended up here by accident. Say, don't you go any... deeper?"

"What's with the double entendres?" the pot calls you black. "And no, this is the bottom of the volcano! What do you want from me?"

"...Soooo you don't know of anything further down?"

"What the heck are you talking about." She's keeping some distance from you. How rare to see her embarrassed like this.

"Oh, I heard from Mika that Valeriana has been around here."

"Um, yes. She wanted my help to heat to the melting point some orichalcum she found while digging around. She just left... I might be able to call her."

Amata shakes her head in a negative gesture. For some reason it seems Smoke can't see her, probably because she's lurking in the passageway.

"...Nah, it's okay. I'll see her later when I get back to Tianna.

I'm re-reading Dancing Smokes introduction in another tab, and I have to say, it's really making me miss Tia.
>"Maka is terrific in bed." Blurts out Tia. Mikahil silently facepalms, as Dancing Smoke nods sagely in acknowledgement.

>"But, you use what you have, and the Unconquered Sun evidently saw fit to grant you this set of skills." Mikhail replies diplomatically. "And you're using them magnificently."
>"Maka being this good in bed is a divine blessing." Tia gives the short version and is promptly ignored.

>>
So, I just woke up, and I'm definitely in support of the 'let's give Maka's wardrobe a little more variety' anons. Maka's current style of lewd doesn't even feel lewd anymore. The lewdest moment of this quest, for me, was when she prayed to the sun in the buff, and accidentally flashed the guard as she tried to leave the tower. Everything since then has been more and more desensitization to the lewd, and less and less of interest.

Plus, the tabard, while nice, is getting seriously old, and just swapping it out for something that's lewd in pretty much the exact same way isn't really any more interesting.

That's my two cents.
>>
"Are you okay? You seem a bit... jumpy." You say, moving up to her and putting your arm around her shoulders.

She seems to be calming down. "...Y, yes. I was just... surprised. To, well, to see you here..."

"I need to ask you some... personal questions." You lean in.

"Your face is too close..." She mumbles, but that's when you gently push her down and... "Okay, okay! I'm talking!"

"Good girl". You smile. "Say, how old are you?"

"...That's an unfair question."

"I'm sorry. It's just that I remember you saying that you used to have a different volcano."

"...Yes. It was eaten by the Wyld at the end of the First Age. But fortunately the Bureau of Nature found me this one where to stay." She sighs. "I used to be such a powerful and important goddess..."

"Who was in charge of this volcano before you?"

"I... don't know? I think it didn't exist before."

"Didn't exist?" Now that's a puzzling statement.

"I don't know, I never heard about it before." She replies.

You're on to something. "...Is there anything weird about this volcano?"

"I don't know. It's been so long, I'm used to it by now. It feels like home." She answers. Figures. She's been here for how long? Probably nothing about it seems weird to her. You'd have to inspect it yourself. But still...

You decide to ask about something else. "...So how are things going with Samiel?"

You see Amata making a face.

Smoke sighs. "...I think his mother doesn't like me."

"That's a shame." You grin.

"I miss him so much. He was so passionate and assertive." She mumbles, lost in fantasies for a moment. "Ah... I want him to play with me more..."

You leave her to her own mental trips, enjoying Amata's expressions for a bit more.

If this place is a fast-travel network, I can see why the Abyssals want it.
Sneaking an army into a noble's house, destroying it, then appearing back in Tianna sounds quite useful.
It'd be more useful for us, though. Less travel-time.

I think she doesn't like gods in general. She seems to think you guys are lazy and wnt worship without working hard enough to deserve it. So prove her wrong about you.
>>
>>33062273

It isn't. Why would you even think that? It's a giant sunken boat-city. It's a city surrounded by massive walls of Admiral's Brass with portholes, airlocks, and external gun emplacements. It's a massive fucking island-sized city that got sunk and buried over at some point to hide it.

I don't think it is. From the description.... Have you ever heard of modern aircraft carriers being described as 'floating cities'? I think that's what we're looking at. a first-age mobile city-fortress that was hidden during the usurpation.

>>
>>33062278

>>
>>33062311

If there is some kind of fast travel network thing, it'll only exist in the city itself.

"Say, Smoke, can you lift me up to the top of the volcano?" You ask her.

"Uh, sure. Give me a moment to get dressed." She dives into the lava.

"I've seen you naked plenty of times. Besides, it's not like your normal clothes cover much." You reply.

She pops back to surface, fully clothed (well, "normally" clothed) And picks you up, spreading her wings and gaining altitude.

"...Say, what about YOUR clothes?" she wonders, halfway up. "Or are you going like this?"

"Oh, damn it. Well, for now let me see what's going on upstairs, then I'm going to go and grab them."

"...There's nothing special going on upstairs." She sighs.

"Maybe." You comment. "...You know, Amata dislikes all gods in general, not just you. She seems to have some bias against the category. Maybe bad experiences."

She sighs. "What can I do for her to accept me?"

"She thinks gods are lazy and demanding. I think she actually opened up to you when you agreed to not receive human sacrifice. All you need to do is just be as helpful as possible, I think."

"...Okay, I'll try that."

Meanwhile, you're on top of the mountain. As she promised, there's nothing special. Everything is the way it was when you first came here: you can see all of Tianna from up here, shrouded in night. The lights from Pearl and the sight of the massive construction site give you a good feeling.

Ok lets plunge ourselves deep into her caldera. With vigor.
>>
You eye down the volcanic well stretching down to the lava lake.

"...Maka, you aren't thinking about-"

You jump, and Smoke's screams of protest vanish behind you almost instantly as the jagged walls of volcanic rock scream past you on your way down.

Of course, lava is much more dense than water, and even leaping into water would hurt you from this height, so you activate your [Iron Kettle Body] charm on your way down and focus on making a perfect headfirst dive for 10 points.

Body + Night = 6 3 8 4 2 = 1 success

But, of course, diving wasn't a sport you ever trained in when you were in Gem, so you clumsily and painfully slam on the lava surface. Your blessings might protect you from the heat, but the impact is still really hard and you sink deep into the thick, cream-like molten rock.

The further down you sink, the more liquid and fluid and hotter it is, and then...

...You suddenly find yourself in a bubble of air filled with light, hitting your backside against a metallic surface upon landing.

You stand up, confused. What happened? Where are you? It takes a lot for your eyes to get adjusted to the light in this bubble.

You look up: the bubble you're in, several meters across, is semispherical: an irregular dome of molten lava hangs above you, kept floating by a terrifying pressure of essence.
The floor is a metallic surface, with a hole, or rather, what looks like an extremely hi-tech vent in the middle of it, releasing waste essence upwards. This essence forms a bubble of empty space before getting absorbed by the rock - and melting it.

>>
[Health: 2/5]

You feel your entire body shaking and burning up. Any other living thing in creation would have been disintegrated by this kind of energies.

Your environmental charms seem to grant you protection from this sort of improvised furnace created by essence discharge - probably by design, so that Solar technicians could repair and inspect this conduit without having to turn it off? But still, there's a limit: you know that, unless you leave immediately, all this essence flowing through your body will just burn you to a crisp.

...So, the heat of the volcano comes from this discharge vent. Something is still active and working. And incredibly powerful, if it can just power an entire volcano as a mere secondary effect of its waste heat and essence.

You can't manage to look straight down the vent: it just feels like an all-powerful force pushing your eyeballs into your skull with spikes made of light and fire.

Trying to stay in control of your body despite the overwhelming energies coursing through it, you manage to leap up, reverse-diving into the lava, and drift up to the surface.

Finally, after way too long, you return to your senses on the shore of the lake of lava, with worried-to-tears Dancing Smoke looming over you.

"Are you alright?! What happened?!"

Still in a daze, you wander away, thanking her, and head back into the passage, where Amata is still waiting for you. From the smirk on her face, you guess that she knows what's under the volcano as well.

It also seems Smoke suddenly thinks you've vanished, and starts calling for you for a moment or two before giving up.

I can think of some. What's the most important thing to Amata? Her people. If the person or entity she swore the oath to promised to keep the people of Tianna safe from something, Amata would gladly swear an inconvenient Oath. And it's not like she ever EXPECTED ~us~ of all people to Exalt as a Solar and start poking around.
>>
She's not LEADING you, per se. More like... going somewhere and not caring if you follow her or not. It might seem like a small difference, but it's how it feels.

She quickly reaches back to the level you briefly explored and into a side room. A light flickers on as she pushes buttons and twists knobs on a panel, and you get in the room just in time: the door closes on its own, and you suddenly feel an acceleration downwards.

"...An automated lift? Still working?" You mumble, even more surprised.

After a couple minutes, the lift stops and the door opens with a mechanical noise. And... you're in a vast war room, with chairs around a round table and the walls filled with machinery, screens, projectors, indicators and gauges, levers and buttons and all sorts of things that make your head spin.

Some lights are working. Some buttons, some screens. This stuff is still active.

"...I'm still wondering why you know all this. What your role was in all this. Why no one else knows anything, not even Dancing Smoke. How did the Abyssals find out, or just how much they know." You tell Amata, who is, meanwhile, sitting on one of the chairs.

Finally, she speaks. "...Please don't ask me those questions. I can't answer them now. A time will come, I'm sure, when I will, or maybe you will notice on your own. But for now... don't ask me. I shouldn't even let you in here. I might get in an enormous amount of trouble for this." She pushes a button, and a trapdoor springs open, leading further down.

"What IS this place?"

Silence.

Feeling frustrated, you leap into the trapdoor. Further down, there are what feels like dozens of meters of ladders, passageways, conduits, machinery, small doors and rooms and corridors. Some sort of engineering or maintenance quarters. The real guts of this thing.

Amata doesn't follow you. She stays in that room. But you start to explore.

(cont.)
>>
>>33063500
>an enormous amount of trouble for this
Does that mean the person she swore the oath to is still around and observing?

Well, no wonder why the Abyssals don't want to slaughter everyone on Tianna. If they end up creating a shadowland then all this first age tech would stop working.
>>
>>33063574
Because Sidereels MASTER PLAN!
Also, pretty sure this is a directional fortress, though its bigger than I thought it would be. Also doesn't explain the lack of conventional artifact weapons.
>>
This place is immense. Even realizing that you just explored a small piece of it, its size boggles your mind. It MIGHT be as large as the entire island, or close to. It also requires an enormous amount of arcane machinery to move, or perhaps for some other function as well.

You can't translate the signs, but you follow them, and your instinct, going with the flow and hoping to end up somewhere important.

You end up in the most important place ever, probably.

An enormous room, circular, the roof probably... a kilometer tall? something like that. The blinking lights lose themselves into darkness. It's hot and dry here, and a giant structure occupies the centre of the room, growing from the ground up, accessible from all side like a delicate machine that needs the maintenance of a lot of people to function properly. You can feel it channeling essence, pumping it through the conduits of the ship like blood through veins. This is a heart.

You can't see it, but something tells you that, if you could crawl up those pipes, you'd end up into Smoke's caldera, popping up from the essence vent you just saw. Dead, likely, but still. The lines, the design, the look of the technology is identical. That was the vent, and this is the reactor. On stand-by, probably, or functioning at minimal output, but working.

You look at the commands, the buttons and levers and knobs all over the room. If you knew what to push...

>Push something.
>Resist the urge, return to Amata
>Keep exploring.
>>

Oaths automatically trigger when you break them. The person you swore them to can be long-dead.

Well, she knows three languages. My guess would be Flametongue, Seatongue, and High Realm. There's almost no fucking in-character reason for anyone other than priests, archaeologists, and other ancient scholars to know Old Realm. There just isn't enough interaction with gods/demons/ruins normally.
>>
>>33063704

In the First Age there were four Weapon-Platforms that were both the most massive weapons in the Exalted Arsenal and equipped to recreate Creation in the Event of a lost war against the Wyld. More than City sized Superweapons made to kill Primordials or destroy entire Wyld-Invasions.
One of them is by Canon in the East and confused for a floating Mountain.

The more you explore this structure, the crazier it seems. It's definitely not a manse, and it's definitely a magical fortress.

The final nail in the coffin, however, is when you finally get to the lowest level, and manage to sneak in a room, an enormous, insane room, circular, and about a mile wide. The floor is a giant lens made from pure crystal. Past it, just soil and rock.
Above you, you see an assembly of other lenses and conduits instead of a roof. This room is part of some kind of giant assembly that channels and focuses Essence downwards.

It's a giant Essence cannon. Pointed downwards.

Which means that this massive city used to fly.

But the craziest thing is that this city is called "The Flame that Marched against the Sea".

How do you know that?

And how did you manage to not get lost, exploring this maze of corridors and passageways miles deep and thick through the belly of a forgotten flying fortress?

It's the Realm Defense Grid, a superweapon on the Blessed Isle powered by a network of manses and controlled by the Scarlet Empress herself - that's how she ascended to the throne, she was the first one to get through the security systems and turn it on in centuries. It was used to end the Balorian Crusade, and quell dissent, but using it causes earthquakes throughout the entire world, so it's only ever used incredibly sparingly. It's the type of weapon that can burn an entire army or smite and entire nation with a single button-press, though.
>>
>>33064264
In the First Age, the Solar Deliberative built five massive flying fortresses known as the Directional Titans. Each was five miles across at its widest point and were effectively flying cities. On board were workshops, factory-cathedrals, warstrider bays, skyship hangers, thousand-forged dragon launch tubes and hundreds of essence cannons mounted on point-defence turrets. Their most powerful weapon, however, was the Eye of Judgment. By opening outward into a siege configuration (adding another four miles to its width), the mile-wide crystallized orichalcum lens of the Eye of Judgment would be opened to the sunlight, which it would aggresively absorb from the area and convert into a coruscating pulse aimed directly below the citadel that could ignite an entire First Age metropolis with a jade-melting holocaust of solar fire.

Their hulls were practically impervious to damage and able to self-repair while anything that had a chance of causing hull damage could be negated by a powerful essence shield that the commander could deploy around the Titan. They required a crew of 5000 to operate and all five have been lost since the Usurpation. Should one be discovered and restored to full operational capacity, there is very little that could stop them.

There are no contingencies against a Directional Titan, except another one. Those things were meant to kill uncrippled Primordials. We could take this thing into the Wyld and make our own Creation.

You can have a Zenith who's all about fighting and tanking and entirely cruel have shared the shared the same exaltation as a Zenith who's all about diplomacy, education, and mercy. They're not the same person at all.

Oh yea, We can't let our Valeriana know about this. Otherwise she would go nuts and start working on getting the thing running.

See here:

I'm thinking a Zenith who treated Twilight the same way we treat Dawn.
>>
>>33064396
doesn't really matter, point is this thing would wreck the island, and our motivation pretty much boils down to protect the people
>>33064400
which we might want to do regardless
in case we need to evacuate tiannas population into the thing, as in turn tables and beat the abyssals with the thing they want

We are gonna have to thank Amata PROPERLY for her trust in this. This was a huge thing that she did for us.

I'm going to have to ask you to, respectfully, reconsider that idea. Attempting to seduce a deathlord is deeply and profoundly unwise.

Isn't there a Sail charm that let's you pilot a ship by yourself as if you had a full crew?
Get Valeriana to fix it up, Mikahil to pilot it, and Maka get's a sweet as Captain's hat

I would love to have a functional D. Titan at our disposal but if there was ever a thing that would make the realm collectively band together and throw literally everything they had at us, A functioning titan under the control of a solar is exactly that thing.

The Bronze faction Sidereals would also throw the fuck down and support the Realm from behind the scenes with whatever they could do.

We are gonna have to sit on this thing and just see what happens.
>>
>>33064509
>behind the scenes
They would mobilize EVERYTHING OPENLY.
>>
>>33064518
>>33064509
i'm torn between "FIRE EVERYTHING" and "Get... everyone."
>>
>>33064509
Chejop Kejak would come personally to kick our ass over this.
>>
>>33064299
... Actually, I'm getting a different vibe from the Abyssals. They'll still inflict the collateral damage, the death of everyone on the island as it rises from the depths to fly once more most likely (though they did ask Maka to evacuate the whole island, which is what's striking me as odd), but this.... if modified, the Flame could be used to push a Neverborn all the way into Oblivion, erasing it permanently. Or create a New Creation from scratch in the Wyld where the laws of Death don't apply and they'd be safe from Resonance and Neverborn. This is setting-redefining stuff here.

We at least need it up, even if we don't use it it's way too useful to not have up
And we do need it, we're Queen of Gem, you know how many ways that place is fucked?
>>
>>33064556
recreate it
>>
Rolled 9

>>33064556
The problem is that it's usefulness makes it a huge target. The Realm might not know we have a D Titan that we're repairing... but the Sidereals would. The instant that became a possibility the bronze faction goes into FUCK THIS mode and throws the Realm, themselves, and every single weapon, favor, mercenary, city state, etc. that they have influence in at us.

This is not including any and all Deathlords who hear about a directional titan from the first age being fixed on some podunk island in the west. Or the Fae hearing that one of those fuckoff mega weapons from the first age getting fixed.

The usefulness of having a partially functional Titan is currently MASSIVELY outweighed by the massive target that this thing really is.
>>
>>33064509
>The Bronze faction Sidereals would also throw the fuck down and support the Realm from behind the scenes with whatever they could do.
'Behind' the scenes nothing. If we got it operational under the command of a circle of Solars and Lunars? The Sids would throw everything they had at us. Starmetal Warstriders, Soulbreaker Orbs, Sunfist Shakrams, murdering pattern spiders and directly grabbing threads on the loom to erase us from existence despite the fate errors it would cause.....

Fuck. Lytek is the god of Secrets. He's friends with Carjack. We agreed to keep this a secret, which means Lytek now knows that we know about it, which means Carjack knows, which means the Bronze Faction knows. Crap in a hat.
>>
>>33064598
*sigh* okay, but we need to get val down here at some point, and someone who know how to treat aneurisms
>>
>>33064635
... Val would have an aneurgasm.
>>
>>33064620
>which means Lytek now knows that we know about it, which means Carjack knows, which means the Bronze Faction knows. Crap in a hat.
Nope. He's the god of secrets only one person knows.
>>
>>33064620
Lytek is the god of Exaltation and hates the Sidereals. Nara-O is the god of Secrets Known to Only One Person, and is Kejak's friend.
>>
>>33064620
Lytek isn't the God of Secrets.
And this isn't a secret only known by one, so its not even in Nana-Os department.
>>
So, sounds like we're getting Heaven Thunder Hammer?
>>
eitherway, we're fucked because we know, aren't we?
>>
>>33064669
yep.
>>
>>33064670
nope
>>
>>33064670
No, even if she knew she can't go telling secrets like that
>>
>>33064670
As long as at least one other person knows, Nara-O doesn't.
>>
>>33064694
does Nara-O qualify as a person?
>>
>>33064713
Obviously not.
>>
>>33064713
I don't think so, otherwise his title would be "God of Secrets Known Only to One Person and Nara-O"
>>
>>33064670
... Maybe, maybe not. Who are we going to tell? Most exalts don't know this thing ever existed, so we'd have to convince them that something like this is POSSIBLE, then that it's REAL, then that we FOUND IT, without sounding stark-raving-mad. So it's not like we're going to be blabbing this a lot.

>>33064713
He's a god, so no.
>>
>>33064736
Oh, and Jupiter, since she's the Goddess of all Secrets.
>>
>>33064678
Cool. Does hitting someone straight up so they fall, or into a solid object, just do +1 damage? I mean, obviously knocking people off of/away from things has its own utility. I'm just wondering what all we can do with this.

Oh, and how far, exactly, do we knock things?
>>
>>33064678
Can we choose to not send someone flying if we want?
>>
Rolled 1

>>33064670

We aren't automatically fucked. We're just in serious danger.

>>33064738
Has the right idea, The big kicker is that we cannot let the bronze faction learn that we know what we know. If they do then we're fucked.
>>
Rolled 7

>>33064647
Nara-O is a rather ambiguous being - he may or may not share what he knows with Kejak. And even then, he has to "look it up" in his archives. And finally, it doesn't belong there - it's a secret known to more than one person.

Obviously, we still have to keep a lid on this thing and forget about restoring it for a century or so, unless and until we are powerful enough to have a chance at using it.
It would be worth it to murder Abyssals if only to make sure THEY don't leak the secret.
>>
>>33064738
Amata knows about it, though she may not know what it is. Same with the person she made her oath to.
>>
>>33064779
We can 'knock them back' directly into the ground. I'm actually a big fan of pounding people into the dirt like tent stakes.
>>
>>33064779
we can also knock them into the air and watch them die by falling damage
>>
you know, battling the lintha and their demon ship that can make the ocean "friendly" actually has become funny
>>

>>33064850
Be honest anon, you're laughing mad at the revelation of the island sized minefield we're standing in and it makes the lintha almost adorable in comparison.
>>
>>33064850
We finally have the tools we need to do it. We can jump straight from ship to ship and, with a single blow, send sailors flying right into the water. Between those two charms, we're now a goddamn human cannonball.

It doesn't increase damage unless you knock them into something really harmful like spikes or vats of acid. How far you knock people depends on scored successes, their defense, damage, and circumstances. But imagine early DBZ knockbacks.

Suffering. I thought you had already left.

To think that you will be another two months busy and unable to run teh quest pains me.
